It was funny, but what had happened yesterday was a complete mystery, even to Amelie. She could recall blurry patches of the events that had transpired last night, yet nothing conclusive.
In truth, however? Maybe the brunette was being a little too dramatic. It had been just a small sleepover with one of her best friends; none other than Katherine! For some reason, she couldn’t recall if Jazz had been there or not. Maybe too much alcohol? No way to truly know.
Somehow, however, Amy felt quite fine this morning. No hangover whatsoever! That’s why she decided to be productive. What did that entail? For one, preparing breakfast. On the table, a collection of cups with different beverages were resting on the table; in the middle, a table basket was filled with a variety of pastries rested. All in all, it seemed like a pretty nice layout for a solid, if somewhat traditional European breakfast.
“Curls~! Breakfast is ready!” So. What was Katherine doing at the moment? Chances were that either she was placidly sleeping on Amy’s own bed, or that she was in the process of waking up and getting dressed; in any case, she didn’t expect for the Spaniard to take too long to join her at the table. Would someone else join them? Considering that Loire was spending some… quality time with Asher, and that Ooi had left considerably earlier to attend her early Saturday (yuck) classes at university, that left only one suspect remaining. So, at least for the time being, it was only Katherine, Amelie, and a possible Jazz. Maybe.
Honestly, it felt somewhat nice that she could do things like this. After all, when comparing this situation to the time when she had just arrived to Japan, she could deem this as a huge improvement. And, overall? She was pretty happy for most of her current situation. There were some aspects that could be better, and while those possessed varying degrees of concern, there was ultimately nothing she could do about them. At least for the time being.
By now, Curls was probably bound to interrupt her reverie. And drag Amy out of her headspace! Sometimes, she just kinda needed a break from her own thoughts, and a good friend was one of the best ways to accomplish that.

The events that had transpired last night were clearer on Katherine’s head.
… Not a lot clearer though. Alcohol can do that to some people after all huh?
Katherine knew this place all too well. She had lived here for a short amount of time, even! And even if things weren’t a lot calmer now regarding her last ventures, Amelie and she had decided it had been a while without them hanging.
As usual, the Spaniard was up quite early. However, entering the kitchen would reveal her friend had gotten a lot done already!
“Morning.” She showed an honest smile while greeting Amelie.
“This brings back some memories.” The green-eyed giggled right after issuing this sentence, tilting her head while she looked at a diligently working Frenchwoman! The scenery when she woke up that morning to find Amelie doing breakfast at Liquid’s hut had not been too different, had it? “It’s a good thing I have already tasted the chef’s meals, so I probably won't be filing any complaints this morning.” Probably being a keyword? She hoped it was more than obvious she was joking. Amelie's food was great!
The Spaniard walked up to the table, looking at all of the pastries and extending her hand to lift one of the cups of coffee that rested on said surface. It wouldn’t hurt to start having hers right away, right? It was a good thing Amelie was not a fan of coffee, so she knew which of these cups were for her and Jazz.
“Do you need any help?” Katherine approached Amelie and rested her back against one of the counters, looking at the kitchen’s layout while she sipped some of the hot beverage.
It wouldn’t take long before a sleepy Lopmon walked inside the kitchen, rubbing her eyes with the back of her fist. “It’s too early for me.” She confessed while letting out a yawn. It was true Katherine’s digimon had a habit of sleeping a couple of hours more than her tamer. Knowing Amelie though, the Spaniard had made a case for her to wake up early, so they could have breakfast together like the group of friends they were!
“This looks very cute, Shisei.” Jazz noted while hopping on one of the chairs. She glanced at the cups over the table, trying to figure out how to get herself up there to grab one without making a mess. Then, she looked at Katherine. This would be a lot easier if she activated her holosuit right?
It was no secret for anyone that Jazz liked being in her digimon form better, though.
Katherine approached the table again, took Jazz’s cup, and handed it to her.
What could the day have in store for this trio?

The brunette’s prediction had —understandably— been on point. Katherine made her presence known in the living room soon enough, and, just like Amy herself, seemed to be completely unhindered by the effects of yesterday’s small drinking session. Quite convenient, all things considered!
“Good morning, Kath. Did you sleep well?” She greeted back, a pretty placid smile adorning her face. Indeed, this small gathering did bring her memories of… simpler times, maybe? She couldn’t quite dare to call them neither easier nor happier. However, the young adult remember those fondly.
“Right? Even though I think we’d need Liquid, Garmore, and Ooi to rebuild the old portrait, don’t we? I wonder what those two are doing at the moment.” She obviously referred to the duo of shipwrights. What had happened to them since the All-Out race was over? Sadly, Amelie couldn’t say she had kept in touch with them. But maybe Katherine had?
In any case! Despite how obvious was the fact that Katherine should be detained and thrown into a jail for the mere fact of daring to question Amy’s own meals, she felt benevolent today. That, and throwing people into jail was kinda rude, wasn’t it? In a more realistic note, her smile turned a bit fiercer at the moment of that obvious teasing comment. “You’ll find out when you taste ‘em! Hope they’re to your liking.”
She shook her head at the offer for help. As far as she knew, everything was set and the only thing left was for them to sit down and enjoy their meal. And with the surprising appearance of Jazz, to boot! With that, everyone who was currently at the apartment was accounted for.
“Morning, Sunshine. I’m glad you like this arrangement! Hope it tastes as good as it looks.”
Some idle moments would pass while the trio consumed their respective breakfast. Overall, the atmosphere was pretty upbeat since nobody had any pressing matters to attend or anywhere to be at the moment. In all honesty, it was pretty relaxing. However, there was this persistent feeling of deja vu floating in the air. And in all honesty, it was a tad annoying. For somebody with an inquisitive mind such as the brunette, leaving pending matters was something that constantly kept on nagging at her. How come so much time had passed since those events? It was one of the biggest questions Amelie could ask herself.
“Did you ever go back to that cave? I’ve always wanted to know the full story behind what happened there.”
Both Katherine and Jazz were —for the lack of a better word— way more curious than her. It’d be pretty surprising if they hadn’t looked into it.

“I did!” With a quite playful tilt of her head, Katherine went to answer Amelie’s question. “How did you sleep? You sure got up early.”
While listening to her friend talk, the Spaniard couldn’t help but remember that morning again. That had been quite an adventure! Probably the biggest she and Jazz had had back then. Although they had gotten involved in many others (and more complex ones, at that) endeavors along with Amelie, there was just something special about that time. The time they met.
“We talk to Liquid sometimes. He hasn’t changed at all.” Which was either good or terrible news for Amelie. “But he's working hard, I can tell you.” Not much more could be said about the candle, anyways! Not like the duo had had a lot of time to chat with him.
Once breakfast started, things went a bit quieter. If Katherine had learned anything was that this meant it was a great meal! Both the Lopmon and the Spaniard seemed to be enjoying it a lot.
“This is very good! I can tell why Asher picked you, Shisei.” Jazz noted while munching on those pastries.
Katherine, on her side, went to sip more of that coffee while her eyes trailed towards Amelie while the Frenchwoman spoke. Although some could say the mentioning of this cave, in particular, could throw the girl off, the truth was that, when they talked about the race, this was a topic that recurrently showed up inside her head. It was a mystery that had gone without solving and… that was something neither the girl or the bunny could let go easily.
Jazz herself also looked at Amelie, her brown eyes going to Katherine for a moment while she waited for her tamer to answer. The events that had transpired inside that cave not only had been completely inexplicable, they had also triggered the Lopmon’s first evolution into adult form.
No point in even doubting what Amelie was talking about. If she said cave, Katherine was pretty sure of what it was. “How?” She asked honestly while putting the mug on the table. “Jazz destroyed the whole thing after turning into Cho-Hakkaimon.” Considering Amelie hadn’t been there, the fact that she was still interested in the mysterious events Katherine had described went to show this was something she at least considered important solving. Considering the details it involved, maybe the blue-eyed knew there was someone or something related to that cave that just knew too much about her.
“We did open up a portal and went back to the site but…” Well, logically… “... There was nothing there. Or at least we couldn’t find anything. Just debris and rocks.”
To that, Jazz decided to add something important. “We’re not even sure the place we went back to was what remained of the cave. It was very foggy on that island the day of the race, so we can't quite tell where the cave was located. We couldn't see anything."
And she was right. The way things had happened? It didn’t matter how curious Katherine and Jazz were, it was extremely hard to even retrace their steps to get to the spot the cave occupied before being destroyed.
“She’s right. Maybe we were in the wrong spot? In any case, we haven’t had much time to investigate, with all we’ve gone through. Moreover, considering the scarce amount of clues we have, we wouldn’t even know where to start looking.”

“Not so bad myself; I’ve been getting into the habit of waking up earlier as of late. Feels like it makes the day more productive. And, as you can see, I think it’s working.”
The effectiveness of such methods could be debated, even though Amy was confident in her skill. Katherine knowing about Liquid’s whereabouts was a pleasant surprise, all things considered. A slight smile briefly took the brunette’s features over.
“It’s a good thing to know that he’s doing his best. Bet he’s already preparing for the next edition of the All Out Race. Feels like the whole deal happened yesterday, didn’t it?”
Fond memories like that were pretty hard to come by, in all honesty. Not like she could complain about having breakfast with two of her best friends, though! It’d be ungrateful of her part to reminisce past times when the present was just as good. Amelie herself couldn’t avoid blushing at the rather shameless compliment…? that Jazz threw her way.
“Th-thanks.” She couldn’t help to stutter a bit on the face of it. “I guess it’s not a bad reason to be picked up, even though… Asher kinda likes to pick on me a lot and I don’t necessarily think that’s a good thing. Even though that’s just him I guess.”
But… she was digressing, wasn’t she? That furtive comment had nothing to do when in regards to the matter at hand; Katherine herself was pretty quick to return to the heart of the matter. Just like the brunette had expected, the duo hadn’t let the topic stay dormant for long, even though their efforts to investigate had been pretty fruitless thus far. What a shame.
Once the two were done with their piece, and after a short, pensive hum, Amy spoke again.
“It’s hard to tell. On one side, you probably searched for everything there was to search there, but on the other… maybe there’s still something there. Something that maybe couldn’t be found at first? I’m unsure.” The brunette paused for a second, trying to collect her thoughts. “I don’t know why, but I have this lingering feeling about something really important being there. Maybe I’m delirious, but I also think it might be worth a shot to check one last time. What do you say?”
In all honesty, the young woman wouldn’t lament very much if their day ended up lazing around at her home, but denying a prospective adventure, plus tying a loose end and sating the weird urge she had didn’t sound like a bad plan at all. Ultimately, it probably depended on her company more than on herself.
“I never went to the place personally, but I think I’m familiar with the island’s location. Three pairs of eyes can see better than two. Maybe the first thing we should do is head there and make sure we’ve searched for every possible clue there before moving on?”
Did that make enough sense? Hopefully! “In any case, we should probably finish breakfast first.”

Being productive was good! And a window to be productive today was about to be opened by Amelie. Of course, if she was putting this on the table, it was likely she felt Katherine and Jazz were not going to reject the opportunity. And that was good because they probably weren’t!
Before that, there was an important topic to address!
… Not really. However, it would be unfair for Katherine to not point the next thing!
“I mean, you’re quite a tease, you know?” The green-eyed noted while their breakfast continued.“I think you being picked on by someone else, in this case, Callum, is only fair, after you pick on people like me so much!” Playfully, the Spaniard puffed her cheeks, right before taking another bite.
Jazz? She giggled. “She’s not wrong.” The bunny added, right before going on with her breakfast.
In any case! Beyond that little comment, there wasn’t a lot to discuss around that particular subject. Instead, the whole cave matter was perfectly worth being looked on! Just as mentioned, a loose end that could be tied!
“I completely agree with that.” The fact that she had conducted an investigation as well as she could (not that she could do it too well considering the way the situation developed), didn’t mean she believed the case was closed! There was still a lot to discover. “Especially if you feel we might find something there. I would love it if you’re right.” She really would!
“I think there are definitely plenty of things happening there we couldn’t see or find when… that face-off happened.” Jazz noted while sipping on her coffee. “I’m totally up for checking it out. Kath and I are always up for finding answers and… who knows, maybe knowing the truth about that would help us face future or current challenges.”
To her digimon partner’s words, and just as Jazz expected, Katherine nodded. They were quite similar when it came to this stuff!
“It’s been a while since we went on an adventure with Shisei.” The Lopmon added. “… Even if our last one was quite messy.”
Hopefully, things wouldn’t be that dangerous this time.
Letting her chin rest over her hand, Katherine shifted her eyes towards Amelie. “If I remember correctly, the island was named Joy Island. It was part of the Binary Archipelago and… I remember it being very foggy. I think the people doing the race were the ones who added the fog, since it wasn’t there when we went back.” That was probably good! It was easier to see things if it wasn’t foggy. “I definitely agree going back there should be step number one.”
Well, that was settled!
But… for now, more coffee and breakfast.

The matter at hand had definitely taken an unexpected turn when Katherine decided to tell all the teasing Amy got from her boyfriend was well-deserved, mostly due to her own teasing nature.
“Hey!” The younger girl had hit a nerve, that was for sure! “Don’t compare me with Asher. He’s the type that can tease you for hours to end without feeling any remorse at all. I’m way nicer than him!”
Without a shadow of doubt, that was the absolute truth. Despite the fact that a certain redhead was probably sneezing at the moment, wherever he was. “Why do you keep calling him Callum, though? I like a lot of things about my boyfriend, but his last name is certainly not one of those. Sides, you kinda sound like you’re his maid or something; it’s kinda weird, honestly.”
Yup, Amy wasn’t a person naturally prone to teasing. Not at all
Less important matters aside, the answer the brunette got from the duo was more or less what she expected. A smile took over her features right afterward. “I’m glad you think the same as me. I think that if there’s anything there, we’ll find it. And if not… well, at least we can close the whole episode with relative peace of mind.”
In the end, their plans for the day had been conjured pretty nicely. Another adventure was on the horizon!
“It’s been a while since the last time we’ve ventured out together, haven’t we?” When was the last time, even? Was it Terminus? Or someplace else? It wasn’t like it mattered too much at the moment, anyway. And definitely not something Amy was very interested in remembering at the moment.
For reasons best undisclosed at the moment, the young woman had to double take at the mention of the name ‘Joy Island’. She didn’t know why, but she got quite the bad feeling about the name.
“Sounds like we’ve got a plan, then. Just hope we get a clear day in the Archipelago and then begin searching, right? Seems simple enough.”
With that out of the way, the only thing left was for the group to finish their meal and prepare whatever they needed for such a journey. At least on Amy’s stead, the need to hurry wasn’t existent, and she fully intended to enjoy her meal to its fullest extent.
“Think we’ll find anything in specific there? I’ve never been there, so I don’t know what to expect.”
With any luck, they’d find some answers and not a lot of problems.

Considering they had already traced their plan and established their main goal for the day, it couldn’t hurt to discuss a couple of menial stuff before getting started. Going back to the unclosed Asher topic was not a bad idea, especially if Amy had left a question in the air.
“I think he’s pretty nice! Neither of you is a bad person, and, although I’m way closer to you, neither Jazz nor I have had any bad experiences with him.” That being said… “… Not that I think that you would get yourself a rude boyfriend. You’re usually not super patient with actually annoying people.” If anything, Katherine knew her best friend was not the kind to stick around someone who she didn’t consider enjoyable. Amelie usually didn’t hesitate in letting people go if they weren’t bringing anything positive into her life. And that was probably a good thing to do for everyone.
About the question? “Well… As you know, we had the chance to meet again after the beach. He helped me with some very important stuff.” The green-eyed noted. “And he has never told me I should call him by his first name.”
By this point, Amelie probably knew what was coming! “You know Kath won’t call anyone by their first name unless they ask her to. Like Shisei or Akemi did.” Jazz explained before going for another bite.
“Y-Yes.” The Spaniard nodded. Her respect code for people in Japan was something she had taken a while to get used to and was not letting go unless she was forced to. “I think it’s a good last name. I don’t think it’s weird. But there’s not much I can do about it. ” And, in all honesty? She appreciated Asher being one of the few that was not forcing her to get out of that zone! She had taken a while to learn people in Japan had to be called by their last names and now suddenly everyone wanted to be called by their first names. Why was it so hard for everyone to merge with the culture they were a part of!?
That was probably a more complicated subject, anyways.
It was definitely more fun to talk about adventures! “It has. I’m actually surprised we have let this mystery unsolved for so long, so I really hope we can give it the proper closure.”
While their breakfast time approached its end, the group would discuss their overall expectations for the venture. “Right. Jazz and I went through the island while you and Liquid went around it.” Katherine timidly placed a digit on her chin while remembering that day. “The plan was for us to get a flag and meet you on the other side.” For a moment, her head went back to that exciting race.
“We ended up stealing the flag from some Agumons.” Jazz noted. “I wonder if the cave was some kind of test established by the race and we could have done something in specific to get the flag from there.” Having finished her breakfast, the Lopmon debated about the goal behind that strange event.
“I’ve thought about that, but… How did they know so much about us? The things those two said made me feel whoever was playing with us knew a lot about Amelie and me.” It was then when Katherine dropped a rather interesting piece of info that, although Jazz already knew, hadn’t been broadly discussed. “As a matter of fact, I remember the fake Amelie calling her evolved form Heraldmon… a name that the real Amy didn’t even know at that time. That is actually how I learned the name of that form. ”
“W-What?” Jazz blinked twice.
So the fake Amelie knew more stuff than the real Amelie? How was that possible? As expected, just getting the tip of your feet into the complex lake of mysteries this event represented could make your head hurt!

The conversation followed normally. In truth? Amelie was being a tad dramatic regarding her boyfriend’s antics. In practice, she had no reason to complain about her relationship at the moment, considering that, while not perfect, it probably couldn’t be better for the young woman. It wasn’t hard to guess that she was pretty happy with how things were at the moment in that regard. “I doubt you will get any bad experiences with him, unless it’s by something neither of you can control. He’s a genuinely good person; not very common these days, you know?” In a sense, it almost felt like she was showing off, but this was also… the truth? It was hard to know if she was striking a nerve or not. “You’re right there, though. I wouldn’t have been able to maintain a relationship with somebody legitimately annoying for long. Once the crush wore off, I’d have probably just sent them off or something.” While she considered herself a tolerant person, she had a hard time being patient with people who are liable to make a situation more unpleasant just for the hell of it. Can’t hold that against her, right? A pensive finger was brought to the brunette’s chin. Yes, she knew that Katherine didn’t refer to most people by their first names unless they asked them to, just like both the girl and her partner exposed next, but… “He has though?” Maybe not directly, but the brunette was pretty sure she was there when it happened. “Back in the beach, I remember it clearly because it was literally part of the first exchange you two had. Maybe you forgot?” Considering how eventually that day had been, that was perfectly reasonable! People tended to forget things all the time, after all. “Regarding his last name though! It’s mostly an unconscious thing on my part, but don’t you feel like ‘Callum’ and ‘callus’ sound really similar? And when I think about callus, I think about this meme Ooi sent me the other day." After browsing her phone a bit, Amy brought it near Curls and Jazz, just so they could see the screen. The result? It was kinda ewww-worthy, honestly. That aside… the girl could feel a hint of excitement in the face of a new/ old adventure. “Giving it closure would be pretty good, wouldn’t it? At least I’m all for having one less question and one more answer when it comes to the Digital World. Answers are losing that game horribly.” At least in regards to the young woman, talking time was over. She listened intently as the two girls shared what they remembered about that day. The cave was, by all accounts, something on the cryptic side of the spectrum; had it been a test or… something else? Maybe it had been both? It was hard to know, considering the nature of the girls’ adventure. “I’m puzzled about that as well.” That was a topic that confused her to no end, honestly. “Unless that person was making those names on the spot, how can somebody else know my spirit forms’ names before me? It means she’s either a very skilled liar or that she knows things I don’t. Think she might be related to my spirits in some way?” In hindsight, it was the most obvious thing ever. Amelie knowing about her own spirits, right? Could one say that she was really Amelie, though? The whole matter was one big headache in that regard. “Based on your experiences with her, what do you think we should do if we find her again?” Funny how she was asking somebody else the question ‘how to deal with Amelie’, huh? It certainly felt like a weird way to tackle this adventure, even though it was probably the correct one.

Now that their meal was over, both menial and important things kept being discussed. As the topic about Asher’s last name escalated, Katherine choked for a second with her own coffee. “I-I don’t remember that being the case. He actually told me his last name after you rudely introduced him by his first name.” She explained nervously. Although she wasn’t lying, the fact she seemed a tiny bit fretted about this didn’t help her case. “So… Callum told me his last name in order to make me feel more comfortable with the way I called him.” Quick nods accompanied that. “Maybe you forgot.” Yes! That is totally how it happened. And she would go back to having her coffee now.
Jazz? She giggled again. “I mean, she’s not lying but…”
The conversation wouldn’t be able to progress a lot further, since Amelie had a meme to show. The image was met with silence, while Jazz looked at it for a tad longer. “… I….” The Spaniard was legitimately in a bit of a loss for words at first. “… I didn’t even know the English word for that.” She honestly noted. “When I think about Callus I just think about a place in Spain my dad used to visit a lot because of work. So… I might try to erase this thing you just showed to me from my brain, for the sake of keeping the thought of that word and Asher’s last name without feeling sick.” Yes. She would most certainly do that.
“I don’t…”
“No questions about this. I will explain later.”
That was for the better probably.
It seemed that the Spaniard had brought an interesting topic to the table, regarding the reach of fake Amelie’s knowledge. “I have also considered she made up that name at the moment just to trick us. For some reason, I feel she didn’t. But a hunch like that is not something we can rely on in a serious investigation.” And she knew that clearly. “If she wasn’t lying, then there’s definitely some type of connection, I would say.”
Her arms folded, Jazz tried to remember more about that encounter while the two humans talked.
“Based on our previous encounter… I would say taking things slowly is the right way. I am almost certain they wanted something from us, and we didn’t do the right thing by fighting them or… destroying the cave.” Katherine’s green eyes trailed towards Jazz, without her actually moving her head to look at her partner.
Jazz eyes widened, feeling the judge over her. She scoffed before looking somewhere else.
“It was probably an inconvenience Jazz evolved into one of the most chaotic creatures I’ve ever seen in that exact moment.” Katherine admitted. “Then again, she was nervous and desperate to help me.” In conclusion! “So yes, I think taking things slow and gaining time by talking to them while we study the situation and discover what do they want from us might be the right thing to do.”
“They did act very… weirdly, didn’t they?” Jazz noted, having remembered this after thinking long and hard.
Yes. There was something else about the way fake Amelie acted that Katherine hadn’t mentioned until that moment but… was it worth it? Well… it couldn’t hurt to bring that up, right?
Katherine issued a long sigh before tackling this topic. “Yes. There was something else about fake Amelie and fake Katherine.” She added. “They not only seemed older than our current versions…they…” How to put it? “… they acted like they had some type of relationship.” And she remembered that quite well! “A romantic one, I mean.”
In case it wasn't clear... "... I have no idea why."

“He totally did.” That remark was accompanied by a mild smirk coming from the brunette. “It’s just that he’s kind of a big softie when he’s not too busy teasing me to care. I doubt he minds too much, anyway.”
Maybe the whole situation was just happier if she had just ‘forgotten’, as Curls had so eloquently put it. “But I can get behind the last-names thing and wanting to sound all proper and ladylike. Some guys are really into the whole Yamato Nadeshiko types, you know? I know for sure I could never become one; I’m just kind of a mess.”
A giggle after her own remark seemed like the only natural response in a situation like that. “How’ve you been in that regard, by the way? I checked out on Akemi the other day and she wasn’t doing too hot. Or at least that’s the impression she gave me.” Probably not something Katherine wanted to talk about given their current relaxed atmosphere, and the question’s likely uncomfortable nature but something that nonetheless Amelie found opportune to ask. It’d be unfair to only check on only one of her friends; both were very precious to her, after all.
The meme didn’t seem to sit all that well with Curls, but that was pretty much the expected outcome of the whole thing. It was a good thing that Jazz didn’t understand what was happening, though! “Oh, but those are pronounced very differently! You can’t think that Callus and Callús are even remotely similar! It’d be like mistaking Andrea with Andrea! The only thing you’ll get from that is confusing a girl with a boy, and nobody wants to pass through such an awkward moment you know?"
All in all, it was a good thing that Katherine decided to not dwell on that topic for long. Soon enough, the trio was discussing the juicy details regarding Katherine’s cave visit and the ‘knowledge’ that her other (fake?) self had. “We can’t discard that everything was a clever trap set by who were our opponents at that time, honestly. Considering we had to fight a JumboGamemon and how ill equipped we were for things like that, it wouldn’t be surprised if that was just another technique our rivals in that race used to throw us off. Still… it sounds a bit oddly specific, doesn’t it? Most of them shouldn’t even have known I did the spirit thing since we were newbies to the competition.”
An index was brought to her chin in a pensive gesture. The trio had gotten themselves in a pretty complex situation, hadn’t they? “But yeah, I think that taking things slow and being careful around what happened is the right thing to do there. I still wonder how we should tackle the whole issue, though…”
It was especially frustrating towards her given how her perception of reality changed drastically when spirit evolving. Quite vexing, wasn’t it? In any case, the brunette would approach the Lopmon and gently pat her in the head. “You protected Curls. And that’s what matters, you know? I don’t know what I’d have done if I found out something happened to either of you. I think you did the right thing.”
The next thing her peer said, however… puzzled her by quite a bit. “Huh.” For some moments, that’s everything Amy could say. Her brain was having a hard time trying to process how it was possible for Katherine and her to realistically be in a relationship. “That sure must’ve been something, at least if it threw you off as much as it’s throwing me off.”
The brunette made a small pause, even though she finally asked. “How did you feel about that?”
Was that an opportune question? Or even a relevant one? Maybe neither, but if they were going to face the same thing again, it was probably for the best to have clear thoughts regarding it.

Considering the conversation seemed to be far from reaching its end, Katherine had decided to stand up and refill her cup of coffee.
Even if Amelie had only superficially tackled the topic about her and Akemi, that seemed to have been enough to drain all of the energy away from the Spaniard. Having sat down again, she glanced at her cup of coffee and let out a long sigh, her chin resting on her right palm and her index finger tapping her own cheek. “We’re okay, I guess. We’re friends, as we’ve always been.” Then, her eyes trailed off towards her backpack resting on the couch in the living room. Another sigh.
Boy, talk about trying to focus again after this.
About thinking Callus and Callús are similar? “I mean, I can, and I will. That’s what I think of when I hear that word, and I can tell you is definitely better than reminiscing the thing you just showed me in any way.” I mean, that was a bit harsh, but also true. You can’t tell others how to think! I mean, you can, but… that’s probably not going to end well most of the time.
“Even finding out which of our enemies were capable of doing that would be interesting.” Jazz noted, timidly placing her hand over the lower part of her mouth. Then, the bunny’s eyes went up to look at Amelie while she received head pats from the blue-eyed. “Thank you, Shisei.” She duly noted. “But I can’t say I agree. I’m not proud of the messes I caused as a Cho-Hakkaimon. We have come to accept each other, take responsibility for what we have done, and embrace the fact we’re the same digimon but…” Shaking her head slowly, the bunny closed her eyes. “… that doesn’t mean I can’t point I could have done things better, even if thinking about that won’t help now. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t beat myself about it, but reducing everything to the fact I protected Jasso is just too complacent for me.”
A nostalgic smirk was drawn on Katherine’s face. She looked at Amelie for a moment and just issued a slight shrug before sipping on her coffee again. It had been a while since the Frenchwoman and Jazz had a one on one talk, and the Lopmon’s way of thinking had definitely mutated as a result of everything she had been through since then.
Even Katherine’s emotions at that time felt distant for the Spaniard. Her green eyes went to the roof and just stared at it for a second or two. “Very embarrassed, I’d say.” She giggled. “While it was very awkward, I don’t think it was particularly traumatizing. Now that I think about it, if all of it had been a façade set by one of our adversaries, they would have probably made our fakes interact in a different way, something that threw us off a lot more.”
That actually made sense for Jazz! “So you say that, while it was weird, you and Shisei being a couple was not even near to the most shocking or unsetting stuff they could have shown you, which leads you to think maybe it wasn’t a tactic deployed by another participant. That’s definitely a logical conclusion.”

Of course it wouldn’t be a pleasant topic. That was the obvious result of trying to unearth a topic that had ended in a relative failure, and where the emotions of two people had been involved. In a sense, however, the brunette had learned everything she wanted to from that answer. Considering pretty much every future inquiry would be probably fruitless, it was for the better to let the topic lie there.
Similarly, she wasn’t going to die on the hill of Callus, Callús or Callum sounding even remotely similar, so she just proceeded to shrug with disinterest. “Suit yourself, I guess. I’m proud you’re so firm in your convictions. A pretty admirable trait, y’know?”
Some morning sass was definitely something that wouldn’t injure anyone, especially if Katherine was willing to be like that! It was all in good fun, after all.
Why did everyone decide to be extremely hard on themselves today, though? It seemed like everyone wanted to be in a bad mood today for… whatever reason, really. Even the usually peppy Jazz was managing to try to bring herself down. “Hindsight is twenty slash twenty, isn’t it? I too wish I could change course after witnessing the consequences of my actions.” A small, almost entertained giggle escaped the brunette’s mouth. “It might be simplistic or even naive, but at the end of the day, and with all the mistakes that you might or might have not committed, you were successful at protecting Katherine from whatever was inside that cave. The end result is what matters the most, ain’t it? Some details don’t have to be optimal if the result is acceptable. I can value striving to become better and learning from your mistakes, though! That’s the correct mindset to have, as long as you don’t beat yourself too much about it.”
Which, mind you, was exactly what Jazz had said, but from words to actual facts there was a long road, wasn’t it? It was kinda obvious that the Lopmon still had a pretty interesting opinion regarding the whole event.
Her previously amused expression changed into full-blown laughter. “Come on~.” She said between wheezes. “I know I said I was a mess, but I know for sure I’d be offended if you said you were traumatized by seeing a mirror image of you dating a mirror image of me. That’d have been plain rude y’know!” Point there, right? “But yeah, it sounds like something awkward to see, that’s for sure. I know for sure I wouldn’t have known to react to it.”
All in all, Katherine was right, however. “Yeah, that makes sense. It doesn’t like a tactic specifically aimed at us, but what if it was a tactic aimed at whoever visited that place? I’ve seen some digimons that let you relive your darkest fears and that stuff, even though this one… I’m not sure what this one was supposed to be.”
Unless… “Do you think it was something that, somehow, was aimed specifically at us with that intent in particular? Why would anyone do that…?” Sure, it sounded like an empty counterargument, but was there really any reason for anybody to do something like that? “With what purpose, even? It’s almost as if a frustrated writer wanted to bring to life one of their torrid fantasies or something similarly bizarre. I guess that’s the reason why we’re gonna go there, but still… don’t you think it’s just too weird? I can’t understand it no matter how much I try.”
Of course, there was also the possibility that they were missing a vital part of the puzzle to resolve this vexing enigma, but as far as the picture was at the moment… it was hard to tell. Could the trio unearth anything else? And most importantly; would they be able to? At least for the time being, nobody could answers those questions.

Just like the Akemi and the Callús topics, the subject about Jazz’s assessment of her past performances didn’t seem to have a lot more to squeeze out of it. The Lopmon nodded slowly as the Frenchwoman spoke. “That is also right.” She noted with a smirk. For the bunny, it was nice to see Shisei worrying about her, making sure she wasn’t being too hard on herself, even if that was a common trait on both Katherine and the Lopmon, one of the many they shared.
At first, Katherine was a bit confused regarding what had triggered Amy’s laughter. It was when the blue-eyed pointed it out herself that the Spaniard laughed too. “That does sound super rude…” Katherine noted, delicately putting a hand over her mouth while she giggled. “I don’t mean it like that.” She then explained. “It’s just that… at the time, I had a bit of a rough time accepting the fact girls could like girls.” What was coming was an interesting piece of info, something that could help Amelie understand a lot more about her friend, assuming she didn’t know!
“I was raised in a super conservative family. My parents haven’t been very permissive and I haven’t had many friends, so… while I had been all over the world, I hadn’t explored it. I only really got out of home when all of this digimon thing started, so I had these… ideas of how girls liking girls or guys liking guys was not something normal, or something like that…” She explained. “… All of that is gone now, but… I think I just had trouble accepting that at the moment.”
After that piece of insight, the green-eyed continued. “Even then, I don’t think it was especially weird. I believe a part of me already accepted what I liked and what I didn’t like, even if my past beliefs said otherwise.” Anyways! They were probably dwelling too much into that sort of things!
About it being a trap ready to get whoever entered the cave, though? “That could be the case, but…” Jazz interjected. “… it doesn’t explain how did they know things about your forms, Shisei.” A pause. “… Ugh. I wish I could remember more of the things they said.”
“Considering how it tackles something I had trouble accepting at the time…” That being the fact a girl-and-girl relationship could exist. “… And the info they handled, it could be something specifically aimed at us or, at me, to throw me off. But… yes, that doesn’t explain how did they know what they knew.”
A final outlook was brought to the table by Jazz. One that would shake things up quite heavily!
“They were older versions of you two so... I’m thinking… could this have been deployed by a digimon capable of seeing the future? Maybe even taking knowledge from it?”
“… That is almost like assuming what we saw were actually future versions of ourselves!”
“Or the future versions of you two at the time…”
“Like… a prediction?”
“Maybe? Of course, things changed along the way thanks to the influence of other people like Asher or Akemi but… what if, had no one interfered, you two would have ended up like that? What if that’s what the cave predicted based on how things were at the time?”
“W-What!?”
Katherine scooted her chair backward, her eyes wide open. She was having trouble gulping down her coffee, even! What was Jazz insinuating!?
“W-W-Well… that would explain the info they had but…”
“I’m just saying.” The bunny shrugged. “Some believe in the concept ‘true love’ and how there’s someone destined to be with you that’s just waiting for you to find them. But… what if any decisions you take can actually change the person you’ll end up having a relationship with?”
The Spaniard blinked twice before looking at Amelie. “But… Amy doesn’t like girls.”
“What if she could have, had things occurred differently?”
An interesting theory, the one posited by the Lopmon!
“In any case, I don’t know if we will get anywhere by theorizing. We’re done here so… maybe we should head there once we’re done here.”
“… Right.” Katherine nodded before picking up the plates and cups. Hard to get back to reality after such a heavy theory! She would try, though. “I’ll wash the dishes.” She noted. “Thank you for the breakfast, Amy. It was very good.” The curly-haired girl showed an honest smile to her best friend.

Things as they were, some threads of conversation were closing as others continued or opened. Some teasing was exchanged as well, it having more or less the expected effect; nothing out of the ordinary there.
Nonetheless, Amelie’s smirk persisted, perhaps for more than what it should. “I know you didn’t, and… really?.” Katherine was a complex girl, but that bit was definitely news for the brunette. “I… actually didn’t know that. Considering, well, everything, you know?”
It wasn’t like that was a bad thing, either, it’s just that small fact came as a surprise for Amy. An explanation was ready by the next moments, and soon enough her expression shifted into a pensive one. “But, it makes sense now that I think of it. Life really has its turns, doesn’t it? I guess it’s a good thing, being exposed to the vastness of the world sooner rather than later.” Accepting change could be difficult; nevertheless, having an open mind regarding it was definitely the correct way to approach it. “That’s good at the very least.”
Self-discovery —or not quite, really— aside, the cave was still proving to be an extremely big question mark. What could be behind it? It was hard to tell, even though at least a semblance of a theory about it was being formed. That much was good.
“I wonder how they knew those kinds of things.” As things were, they could only theorize, couldn’t they? Jazz was definitely presenting an interesting alternative to what that could or couldn’t be. “If it was really us, then the point of divergence probably wasn’t a ‘single’ point, so to say. It’d probably have taken much more than that, don’t you think? For all we know, they could be us from another time, another reality or… they mightn’t even be us in the first place. It’s truly hard to know the answer from what we’ve gotten.”
Jazz’s shrug was followed suit by Amy. “The core of a person seldom changes, but what it exactly comprises is hard to tell. What would take for you to stop being yourself and being somebody else…?” That question lingered in the air, even though it was probably way too heavy. “I doubt that the type of people who catches my fancy being different would change who I am for instance. But I agree; all of these are kind of details for the time being. We’re not gonna get anything concrete until we go there ourselves.”
That was probably all that they needed to discuss for the time being, at least in the apartment! With newfound energy, the young woman looked forward. “It was no problem; I’m glad you enjoyed the meal! I’m gonna prepare all the things we need for our small trip so we can get going as soon as you’re done with the dishes. I’ll be done in a sec!” Once the duo was done with all the necessary preparations, they found themselves flying over Binary Archipelago. “Do you think you can point to the island if you happen to see it? I don’t think I can pinpoint it myself.”
In all fairness, it had been a fair bit since the All-Out Race had taken place, not to say that Amelie herself hadn’t gone to the island in person. With any luck, they’d be able to track it promptly enough. And if not? At least they’d have a nice drive across the ocean. Nobody could complain about that, could they?
