Name: Kazuo Tachibana (橘 数郎).
Alias: Kazu.
Age: 16.
Gender: Male.
Height: 5'6".
Weight: 132 lbs.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral.
Birth Date: October 18.
Birth Place: Fukuoka, Japan.
Western Horoscope: Taurus.
Eastern Zodiac: Boar.
Skills/Talents:
※ Hand-to-Hand Combat: Kazuo is not trained in any martial arts, but through his tendency to get himself into fights over the years, he's earned some basic street knowledge of how to fight people. That said, he avoids fighting others unless they throw the first punch, his combat skills are also useless against Digimon, he would likely lose to someone with formal discipline, and his own skill isn't at all extraordinary when put up against others with some fighting experience.
※ Quick Writer: Due to not having access to sophisticated JSL for most of his life, Kazuo has adapted his writing style to match his needs. He's good at shorthand as well as simply fast writing.
※ Parkour: Well, you gotta do something when you're cutting class. He hasn't trained this in order to evade the police or his brother or anything strange like that—he just wants to feel free, and climbing and skipping over any wall or boundary that might say "no way son" is invigorating.
Personality:
In a large number of ways both strikingly similar and extremely different from his brother, Kazuo is a delinquent with little patience for people outside of his close friend circle. "Us versus them" is the rule that guides his social interactions, and for most of his life the "us" has included no one but himself. His social development has been stunted, his since-birth deafness aside. It's not so much that Kazuo doesn't know how to interact with others as much as it is that he has no patience to, as he sees little reward to putting up with others that might be flaky, boring, or just plain out a drain on his time. Not that Kazuo does a whole lot with his time, anyway. He has few hobbies, but when he has free time, he primarily whittles it away by practicing parkour around the city and playing video games. His favorite genre is sidescrollers followed by first-person shooters—FPSes in particular are fun challenges to him, and he enjoys playing sniper classes which are much less reliant on hearing the explosions and guns firing around them. (Plus, there's always the thrill of catching idiots that run in a straight line.) Despite FPSes being cooperative games, Kazuo has little patience for others as with real life. He'd rather play for himself and for his KDA. He does have a competitive streak to him: if his team begins winning, especially by his own hand, he often switches teams to try to help the losers. It's not that he's altruistic in that sense, it's the aspect of challenge.
Kazuo's deafness is one of the most important factors that influenced him growing up. For the vast majority of his life, he's had difficult, slow communication with everyone, including even his parents and older brother (who also bullied him over it during his childhood). Though Kazuo is a very confident young man, he rarely uses it for the purposes of leadership and instead harnesses it as a weapon to distance himself from others. He can be quite intimidating to those that get scared easily, and quite annoying to those that don't take well to being insulted. His eagerness to piss others off has gotten him into plenty of fights in the past and he hasn't changed terribly since then. Fighting is incredibly fun, win or lose, and his pride aside, he doesn't mind having to nurse a wound or two if he it helps him learn how to defend himself better in the future. Kazuo despises the thought of being protected by someone else (which he views as coddling), and despite getting on well with his older brother nowadays, he feels a secret resentment toward his attempts to push Kazuo to become a better student.
As for his redeeming qualities, Kazuo is extremely susceptible to his own whims and while he often weaponizes it against others, he can also find himself suddenly helping those he views as in need of protection. He is hugely a hypocrite in this aspect, but he hasn't been called out on it yet and he never wastes his time on evaluating himself, so he's unaware. He admires courage in others; anyone who stands up to him earns at least a shred of respect from him, as he views himself as a difficult presence. However, he hates dogged persistence without some moving logical or emotional reason behind it. He associates it with pedantry, his greatest trigger for anger. Kazuo may be quickly susceptible to anger, but he usually handles it by just walking off rather than by trying to initiate a confrontation with the other person. This is probably the greatest change in his person since his birth; in addition to his temper, he also used to be extremely confrontational. He stayed that way up until the end of middle school, but now he knows better than to go picking fights (though at his worst, he likes to egg others on to throw the first punch).
Although Kazuo has a base urge to shove others away from him, one relationship in particular has defined his social growth through his entire life, and that is his friendship with his brother. Though he was bullied a lot by Ren when they were young, often hit and yelled at for "not paying attention" to what Ren was saying, the efforts that Ren has made to learn the little scraps and pieces of JSL between the two as well as his insistence on always carrying around pencils and notebooks for communication with his little brother has helped to soothe the injuries inflicted. He no longer carries a grudge toward Ren's early mistreatment of him, and in fact takes a liking to the (comparatively) hardworking academic. The two of them have made something of a secret world with one another, owing its cause to simultaneously Ren's social awkwardness as well as Kazuo's automatic distrust and disregard of the outside world. Kazuo can be pretty pushy with his older brother, especially physically (since he knows Ren is far too scrawny and squishy to try to fight back), but he does respect him and his boundaries and will hold back if he's told to stop. But he still is Ren's brother, by the way. Boundaries won't stop him from switching teams on their FPS games just so he can snipe him every time he moves out of spawn. Haha, stupid older brother. Stop walking in straight lines and let's see where that gets you.
Appearance:(Click for a larger image!)
Barely under the average height for a Japanese male, standing at 5'6", Kazuo is a little bit of a small guy, especially when put up against foreigners. Despite his heritage being half-Canadian and his mom being 5'9", he has inherited his father's vertical challengedness (who is only 5'5" himself). At least he's not as scrawny as his brother—Kazuo is a fit 132 lbs to match his height, and he has a very healthy amount of muscle on his bones (unlike Mr. Flab over there). Physically, he's definitely not as imposing as he is in personality; his method of dress doesn't do a lot to enhance his image as a trigger-temper, class-cutting punk, and his stature is already sad enough as it is. He's naturally cold, so he dresses warm. He also can't stand tight-fitting or strange-fitting clothes, so his clothes are baggy and he often wears layers, even in the heat of summer. Of note is his hat, a leopard-spotted gray hat with black, ear-like extensions on either side, which he wears as often as cleanliness and dress code permit. Though once a present from Ren with the intent to mock him—"hey nerd, thought this fit your style"—he has proudly worn it ever since, and with confidence. Also, unlike Ren and his sloppy hairstyle, Kazuo preens himself at least a little. He doesn't want to look as much of a dorky mess as his brother, so his chin-length, dirty blonde hair is kept neatly combed with a long side-bang parting to the left. He doesn't usually do anything out of the ordinary with his body language, but he has a tic of fiddling with his bangs with two fingers when he's bored or irate.
Personal History:
Kazuo Tachibana was the second son to be born to the Tachibana family, consisting of parents Molly Tachibana (Canadian) and Hideyoshi Tachibana (Japanese), as well as their first son, Ren Tachibana, older than him by just short of a full year. There was one catch that the parents were not ready for, however, and that was that their beautiful baby had total congenital hearing loss. Though they were joyous for the baby's safe delivery, they were unsure how to handle the responsibility of raising a deaf child. Neither parent doted terribly on Kazuo, instead focusing on Ren for the first year of Kazuo's life as they were ill-equipped to handle raising Kazuo. How is one to teach their baby to recognize mama and papa if they can't hear their mom and dad babbling those words to them, can't comprehend what their mouth movements mean? It was only around his second birthday that both parents came about with the new determination to do whatever it took to make this child's life as good as possible, and to take every resource they could find to accomplish this. Kazuo was a very quiet baby, not understanding babbling enough to articulate many noises, but at the age of 2 finally said his first word, "baba" (which his parents misconstrued to be insulting the poor mother, but actually was the child's attempt at mimicking "papa").
Kazuo's development was very slow but straightforward for the early years of his life, only really hitting a roadblock at age 3. At this age, Ren had grown enough to seek social interaction with his little brother, but due to Kazuo's weak communicative skills, Ren understood his baby brother to be intentionally ignoring him like a little snot. Whenever their parents were out, Ren took it upon himself to personally teach Kazuo a lesson by pushing him around and yelling at him whenever he failed to adequately respond. This behavior went on unhinged for two years. When Kazuo reached age 5, he had learned just enough of verbal communication to be able to have very, very basic conversations, and it was also at this age that his wit began to grow. In fact, he learned through experimentation that tattling on Ren had extremely pleasing results: the parents would yell at him, he would stop hitting Kazuo, and he would look really mad too! There was just one bad side effect: whenever the parents went out, Ren always smack him with a vengeance. This scared Kazuo, but he knew what he had to do... turn the tables! In fact, he became a good liar during this time, crying to his parents about Ren's bullying even when he hadn't done anything, and because Ren had a history of bullying in the past, Kazuo always made it out clean.
After a few years of this, Kazu finally had his own fill of counter-bullying his brother, and stopped randomly tattling on him as often as before. This just provoked Ren to try the same strategy in exchange. Not that it worked. No credibility means no success. Therefore, the both of them began to brawl physically with each other whenever they had a disagreement (always), but they usually restricted it to the hallways at school. They both gained a little bit of a reputation in the school. In fact, quite ironically, the both of them began to be bullied by others, for different reasons each unknown to the other. Ren was a jerk for bullying a deaf kid! And... hey, on the other hand, Kazuo's stupid and deaf! While Ren was mostly unable to defend himself against his aggressors, Kazuo stepped up the heat and learned to fight quickly enough that he was soon able to consistently defend himself and scare them away whenever they tried anything.
It was a pure accident that finally brought the two together. Having hardly any friends that knew how to communicate with him through his deafness, Kazuo was prone to moodiness and lashing out. On one day in particular, he was feeling just about to explode when he found Ren being bullied outside at recess. He didn't really care to get involved in the incident, but one of the bullies noticed the familial connection between them and challenged him while he was trying to pass. It took hardly this for Kazuo to flip his lid and utterly whomp all of them. Though he tried to leave without making any more of a scene, Ren grabbed his sleeve and offered him a thumbs-up (nearly getting whomped, too, in the process). Kazuo didn't think much of it in the moment, but later realized that it might be possible to make things up with Ren.
So they did. It was awkward and slow at first, especially with Ren's lack of experience with communicating with Kazuo as well as his practically nonexistent body language, but they finally managed to kindle the beginnings of a friendship which has lasted up to this day. Ren's role in Kazuo's life has been important, and lately, it's been the social development he's been very starved of for all his life. (Won't stop him from cutting class now that they're both in high school, though.) Also extremely recently, the entire family has packed up and moved from Fukuoka to Shibuya with the intent of finding Kazuo better opportunities in the more centralized city.
