Riding over the ocean in a vintage convertible was Mandrake and his small family. A jet engine was keeping the vehicle aloft meaning they wouldn't have to use a boat to travel to the Binary Archipelago. Soon a small village came into view and, after spotting it, Mandrake flew lower landing on the beach not far from the village and drove into town. After awhile Mandrake found a place to park and he, Lothar, and Kshin got out of the car the instant the car was turned off.
Walking through the streets Kshin saw a flyer on a nearby tree and ran over to it his curiosity peaked. Reading the flyer he said "Mandrake. Lothar. There is some kind of magic competition for rookies and younger. That sounds like fun. Too bad I can't compete since I don't know any magic."
"Does it say anything about it being for villagers only?" Mandrake asked his eyes sparkling.
Confused Kshin reread the sign before looking at Mandrake and Lothar. "No it doesn't. Why?" Kshin asked his face scrunched in his confusion as the young Gumdramon tried to figure out what Mandrake was getting at.
Sounding amused Mandrake then asked "Then who says you can't compete?"
Blinking in dawning realization Kshin then said "You mean you will help me, Mandrake?"
"Of course I will Kshin. One doesn't need magic powers to perform slight of hand and I can help teach you some simple but entertaining tricks to start with. First we'll get some things to help you and then sign up before practicing for the competition. When does it start, Kshin?"
"It starts a few hours from now so is that enough time?" Kshin asked with a cock of his head.
"It should be if we get a move on. Let's get going." Mandrake replied and the three of them began walking a bit faster. After exploring the shops Mandrake purchased a magic kit and some playing cards for Kshin and the young Gumdramon was carrying the bag the purchases were in. Upon reaching the place to register for the competition Mandrake and Lothar registered Kshin before the family headed for the beach to practice without too many observers since they knew Kshin wouldn't want his act copied by someone else in the competition.

Upon reaching the beach and seeing no one around as well as Mandrake not telepathically sensing anyone, the trio came to a stop. Lothar sat down in the sand not far away from Mandrake and Kshin and, since he had no knack for slight of hand, decided to watch while Mandrake helped Kshin out.
"Now, Kshin, I'm sure you're already aware that stage magic is about misdirection." Mandrake said and Kshin nodded before the Wizardmon continued "These kind of tricks can involve more than just mere slight of hand and even those not blessed with any magical powers can master performing various illusions with practice but I think for this competition we should stick to having you learn some relatively easy tricks."
"How can I stand a chance with tricks those other kids might already know?" Kshin asked looking genuinely confused complete with his face scrunching as if trying to make sense of Mandrake's words.
"Simple, Kshin. All we need to do is put a different spin on old tricks in your magic kit as well as maybe opening with a clever card trick." Mandrake answered causing the confusion to vanish from Kshin's face.
Then Kshin looked at the bag containing the magic kit and playing cards and dug the items out of the bag his hammer tail softly swishing happily. "Think we can figure something out, Mandrake? I gotta admit I'm starting to get nervous. What if they start making fun of me?" Kshin asked his voice starting to sound soft and nervous. He had never performed in front of a crowd before. This was nothing like fighting but his heart was hammering like it was the day he first digivolved to his current form of Gumdramon.
Mandrake walked closer to Kshin and placed a hand on the youngster's shoulder causing Kshin to look up at him amber eyes meeting Mandrake's sapphire ones. "Don't worry, Kshin. Not every performer has a successful show everytime no matter how skilled they are. I've had some bad shows myself." Mandrake said.
Kshin was confused again but asked "Do you ever get nervous before one of your shows, Mandrake?"
Mandrake nodded before he said "Yes but what has helped me is focusing more on my performance than the crowd watching me. I'm sure you've been watching my shows." As Kshin nodded Mandrake continued "While you perform your tricks you have to act like you aren't nervous even if it isn't necessarily an easy task."
Hearing how Mandrake got nervous too helped Kshin in regaining his confidence and as Mandrake lifted his hand off his shoulder, Kshin said "I'm ready."

A few hours of practice later and Kshin was walking back to where the competition would take place. The performances were going to take place on an outside stage and various chairs set up for digimon of various sizes were in front of the stage with the chairs infront intended for smaller digimon and the ones in back for larger ones. This setup was an ingenious way for everyone interested in watching to be able to see the show.
Various young digimon were near the stage getting ready and Lothar left to let the ones running the competition know Kshin was there before swiftly returning. Kshin approached the stage getting in line behind the majority of the competitors since he was still feeling a bit nervous he wouldn't be any good despite Mandrake's reasurrances.
A voice from behind Kshin caught the young Gumdramon's attention as it said "This is my competition? A bunch of wanna be magicians with no magic in them whatsoever? What a joke?" The voice was snobby and rude as if it belonged to someone with an enormous ego.
Kshin turned around seeing the voice belonged to a Dracmon that had a irritatingly cocky smirk to go with the voice. "What are you looking at? I don't sense any magic in you and you think you'll be able to beat me in this competition?" Dracmon said with a sneer.
Now this guy was beginning to get on Kshin's nerves but he calmly answered "If you have a problem with me looking at you, I can turn around. As for beating you, I don't know if I will. I guess it depends on what the judges think of the performances. I was taught some tricks by a talented magician..."
"Let me guess it was a talented fake magician." Dracmon interrupted taking on a bullying tone before laughing at Kshin.
Kshin's amber eyes began welling up with tears while a growl began coming from him. Mandrake and Lothar were nearby and were surprised to hear the noise coming from Kshin as they had never heard him growl before. Kshin's rage boiled to the surface in full force as he then roared "Mandrake is not a fake and he's a far greater magician than you!" His posture was now aggressive his tail stiff and ready to swing.
"What's wrong? Are you mad at me for speaking the truth? Where is this so called 'Mandrake' then?" Dracmon said flexing his claws not seemingly frightened by Kshin's aggressive posture.
Seeing where things were bound to go Mandrake decided that enough was enough and made his way to the two youngsters coming up behind Dracmon. Dracmon felt a magical presence behind him and when Mandrake, in a stern paternal tone, said "Alright, I think that's enough young man."
Dracmon whirled around looking up into the angry sapphire eyes of a Wizardmon and when Kshin said "Hi, Mandrake." Seeing Dracmon's cocky smirk vanish seemed to calm Kshin and when Dracmon scurried away but still near the stage Kshin looked up at the Wizardmon and said "Thanks, Mandrake."

Mandrake knelt down to eye level placing a hand on Kshin's shoulder before he said "Are you alright, Kshin? Lothar and I heard you roar and when I saw you take an aggressive posture I was worried things would get out of hand."
Kshin wiped his eyes as he realized he was still crying before he said "Yeah I think so but he had me so mad. First he was bragging before he was making fun of the other kids just because they didn't have any natural magic like you do. Then I mentioned I was trained by you and he called you a fake. Then I don't know. I was so angry that I just lost it. If you didn't show up I think I would of lost it and hit him."
Though Kshin was no longer crying, he was still shaking with rage causing Mandrake to set down his staff and pull Kshin into a hug. Upon being hugged the anger vanished from Kshin and the young Gumdramon began crying again. Mandrake began rubbing Kshin's back between his tiny wings and soon Kshin's crying ceased. As Mandrake released Kshin from the hug, he asked "Do you feel any better now, Kshin?"
"Yeah. I just don't understand why some have to result to bullying others. I guess it's something no one understands." Kshin said. Sounds from the stage indicated the competition was starting as Dracmon pushed his way to the front to perform his act first. "Looks like the competition is about to start. I guess we'll see if Dracmon has any real talent, huh?"
Mandrake picked up his staff and joined Lothar who had found a seat and sat down next to his boyfriend while Kshin got back in line. Unlike Dracmon, Kshin stood politely in the back waiting his turn. As for Dracmon he began waving his hands his blood red claws glowing with magic power. The cocky smirk had returned to his face full force now that he was on stage. Blood red smoke came from his glowing claws and it billowed around the stage slowly taking form becoming more serpentine in shape before what looked like a massive skeletal snake had wound it's way around the stage that was many times larger than Dracmon himself.
At Lothar's look of shock, as if reading his mind, Mandrake said "It seems the obnoxious child has a knack for necromancy. He likely had bones on his possession to reanimate this monstrous serpent. Seems a bit reckless for the purpose of trying to outdo some stage magicians in training. Be ready for potential trouble, Lothar." Lothar nodded and waited for the moment to spring into action if things got out of hand.
Fortunately all that happened was the little brat showing how proficient he was controlling the massive serpent before causing it to vanish an bowing. Then he hopped down off the stage and went past the others looking at Kshin before he snidely said "Good luck beating that, kid."

Though annoyed at Dracmon, Kshin decided to ignore him. Hopefully by not giving that brat response he would stop but Kshin would be ready just in case. The competition continued as one by one each youngster got up on stage to perform. Then a rattle was heard as a Tokomon, which was one of the few in training digimon in line, made it's way on stage. On the Tokomon's back was rings so it was obvious that the little one was planning on doing the linking ring trick but how it would be done seeing as Tokomon had no arms would be interesting to see.
Kshin watched as Tokomon set the rings on the stage before facing the audience with closed eyes. Tokomon then snapped its eyes open dramatically and picked up a ring in its mouth before tossing it in the air followed by the other two it brought. Then Tokomon leapt into the air using his mouth to link the rings before tossing them into the air again when it landed. Tokomon then followed up with blowing bubbles up at the linked rings until it formed into one big bubble that landed next to the tiny digimon on the stage. Then Tokomon turned to the bubble that was twice its size before backing up and charging into it causing three bubbles to separate from the main bubble which popped. Within the bubbles was the three rings which Tokomon retrieved by popping the bubbles with its teeth. After retrieving the rings Tokomon bowed before leaving the stage.
"That was an interesting variation of the linking rings trick." Lothar said with a smile.
"Indeed it was, old friend, and the little one had great technique. If Tokomon continued to practice it could be an impressive magician." Mandrake said. He had been enjoying the performances of the young ones so far it seemed since Tokomon was one of the last competitors it was likely the judges would rank Tokomon fairly high.
Next up was a Palmon that Kshin was standing politely behind. She made her way up on stage with the grace of a dancer. Waving her arms she began as she twirled gracefully flower petals twirling around on the stage before they came together before changing into a large flower that slowly bloomed open revealing the flower to be empty. Then Palmon made her way onto the flower before lifting her arm the flower closing up on her. The flower began to glow before dissolving into petals that blew away in the wind and Palmon was gone. She wasn't gone for long though as she came swinging down from a tree that was not far from the stage and landed with an elegant twirl before bowing.
As she approached Kshin he said "Wow. That disappearing trick was awesome. So was your dancing. I think you have a good chance at winning."
"Don't count yourself out. I think you have a chance too since you're up next. Just give it your best shot. 'Kay?" Palmon said causing Kshin to smile.
"Thanks. I'll try my best." Kshin said now no longer nervous as he made his way to the stage. Meanwhile Dracmon was watching with his arms crossed with a frown. The last two fake magicians were better than he thought but he was still confident he had the competition won.

Kshin got up on stage and set up what looked like the shell game trick. Dracmon snorted in amusement catching Kshin's attention as it seemed Dracmon had come close enough to the stage to easily hear him and snidely asked "The shell game? Seriously? Why would you show off such a lame trick?"
A smirk appeared on Kshin's face at the nasty brat's snide question before Kshin cocked his head as a mischievous glint in his amber eyes reminiscent of Mandrake appeared. "You sure my trick is lame? Then why don't you help me out then, snake boy?"
Dracmon hopped up on the stage before he said "I'm beginning to think you are jealous of me, kid." Dracmon's obnoxious cocky smirk then came forth but Kshin ignored it.
"We'll see, Dracmon. We'll see. Oh and by the way, my name is Kshin." Kshin said as he finished setting up.
"What ever. Let's see what you have since you've been bragging about being trained by a great magician. I guess he can't even do basic stage magic. What kind of magician is he then?" Dracmon said crossing his arms and looked at him as if taunting him.
Kshin managed to keep his face neutral but inside his rage was threatening to boil over but it fortunately passed fast. It was time to show Dracmon how wrong he was. Bringing out a bit he set it on the table near the middle cup before placing it in plain view of everyone watching under the cup. Then like the classic trick he moved the cups around for a while before stopping. "So where is the bit then, wise guy?"
Dracmon didn't say a word but reached for the cup on the right where it should of been and there was nothing? Confused he lifted the other two cups at once revealing the bit wasn't under any of them or even secured to the top of the cup. "Where is it? It should of been under the right cup. You have to be cheating and having that Wizardmon, Mandrake, helping you." Dracmon yelled pointing an accusatory finger at Kshin.
"The only help he offered me was teaching me the trick, Dracmon, but I'm sure the audience wants to know where the bit is. They will find out shortly as this is only half of my trick." Kshin said grinning with glee as he brought out a deck of cards before he said "Pick a card, Dracmon." Kshin fanned out the cards and Dracmon snorted but humored Kshin drawing a card from the deck and showing it to the crowd before putting it back in the deck. "I think we should make this more challenging so why don't you shuffle the cards?"
What was this Kshin kid up to? How could that Gumdramon find the card if he shuffled it? Shrugging he shuffled the deck and handed back to Kshin. "Good luck finding the card without help from Mandrake." Dracmon said the oh so punchable smirk still plastered to his face.

Kshin then looked as if he was about to burst out laughing but managed to maintain his composure somehow despite his mischievous grin. He made a show of looking through the deck before Dracmon was growing impatient and tapping his foot before he growled "Hurry up and admit it. You don't know which card it is so quit stalling."
Kshin's grin grew wider and he said "But I do know where it is, Dracmon."
"Then show me then. Which card is it?" Dracmon said with a glare. He was getting more angry since a digimon he dubbed a fake magician was trying to mess with him.
Kshin then set the deck down on the table and, to Dracmon's confusion, approached the vampire digimon reaching over his shoulder behind him grabbing something apparently on Dracmon's back. It was a playing card and, after looking at it, Kshin said "What do you know, Dracmon, it appears you do have a heart after all." Kshin then showed the card to the crowd which was a jack of hearts. "That is if this was your card." Kshin said showing it to Dracmon causing the dark digimon's jaw to drop in sheer shock.
"What? How did you find my card?" Dracmon began to sputter in indignant rage while flexing his claws.
Seeing Dracmon's aggressive behavior, Kshin stepped back and said "I thought you were a 'real magician.' Surely you know that a magician never reveals the tricks of his trade." Kshin then made a show of looking at the back of the card he was still holding before revealing the bit from the trick prior and said "Looks like I didn't misplace my money from the last trick after all."
That seemed to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back as Dracmon hissed in sheer rage and sprung for Kshin but missed as the young Gumdramon pivoted in the nick of time to get out of the way. Fortunately Dracmon didn't get the chance to attack again as Lothar, who had sprung out of his seat when Dracmon first leapt for Kshin, now had the little vampire by the scruff of his neck and was effortlessly carrying the nasty wiggling brat off stage. Somehow Dracmon's act of violence didn't get him disqualified from the competition and as the judges quietly talked among themselves Lothar dropped Dracmon into an empty chair next to him and said "I think you are overdue for a time out young man."
"I don't have to listen to you. You're not the boss of me..." Dracmon began in a rant only to be cut of by an angry glare from the Leomon known as Lothar. Dracmon then grew quiet as a mouse and sank submissively into the seat crossing his arms while pouting like a toddler. It was no way cute or flattering but Lothar chose to ignore it since the brat was quiet and sat back down next to Mandrake. Dracmon's behavior made both Mandrake and Lothar glad their children were mostly well behaved.

Sometime later the judges called all the competitors up on stage and Mandrake and Lothar made sure Kshin and Dracmon were standing as far away from each other as possible while on the stage. Dracmon was smirking again as the judges stood up to announce the winners. One of the three judges, a Starmon, took hold of the microphone making it obvious he was going to handle the announcement of the first, second, and third place winners. The only two judges, a Kazemon and Flamedramon, stood just behind him. "Thanks for your patients everyone. I would like to say that choosing the winners from so many gifted performers was hard but with Kazemon's and Flamedramon's help we managed to make our decisions. In third place with a unique twist on the linking rings trick is Tokomon." Starmon announced causing the audience to applaud and, after politely waiting for the crowd to finish, Starmon then said "In second place, despite his dreadful behavior regarding attacking another competitor, is Dracmon." Though not happy the crowd applauded out of being considerate and nothing more. Dracmon was not happy with only getting second place but smirked as it seemed the Gumdramon that called himself Kshin was out of luck cause their was no way his lame act despite the twist it had would win. "Lastly in first place for her disappearing act combined with her graceful dancing is Palmon." The crowd was clapping as if in agreement with the judges.
Kshin hopped off the stage kind of bummed he didn't win and after talking to the judges learned he got fifth place. As soon as he headed back to Mandrake and Lothar he was bumped rudely by Dracmon and the brat yelled "Better luck next time loser!"
Kshin rolled his eyes and shook his head as he made it to Mandrake and Lothar. Mandrake saw how disappointed Kshin looked and asked "Are you alright, Kshin?"
Kshin looked up at Mandrake and smiled before he said "Yeah. I'm okay. I got fifth. I was hoping I would do a bit better though. That and I was at least hoping I would of beaten that brat, Dracmon."
"Fifth place in your first show was still a good job and it seemed that the judges still liked your performance." Lothar said causing Kshin to look at him.
"I'm sure if you practice more tricks you will win a competition in the future, Kshin." Mandrake said in a comforting way.
Kshin chuckled before he said "At least I not only made a fool out of an obnoxious bully like Dracmon but he didn't win either so he's probably stewing that he was beaten by some so called fake magician by now."
Mandrake chuckled as well before he said "That Palmon was a talented girl and I was surprised by her technique for one so young." Mandrake looked away from the stage where the audience and performers alike were leaving and a clean up crew was coming in to take care of the stage and chairs. Mandrake, Lothar, and Kshin headed towards an inn not far from where the car was parked and decided to stay the night where they would head out again the next morning.
