Back to the Beginning [Luke/Vee]

Truth be told, Vee was expecting the three baby Digimon to give him raised eyebrows in response to his experience with humans. From what they were told and taught, he felt that it would take a bit more time to convince them that humans were not at all what they perceive them to be. These kinds of things were hard to break once you’ve viewed them as fact, but thankfully, they took his words into much consideration and even seemed intrigued, much to his surprise to be honest. Vee listened curiously as Luke explained about Rosewood. He shared the same positive reaction with the baby Digimon. He didn’t think that there was a town out there in the Digital World that offered many opportunities. He’ll have to stop there and check it out whenever Vergil has free time. When Kapurimon warned Luke that he’ll have a rematch with him if he found he was lying, something within Vee made him stand up and put a hand in front of the Elecmon. Was it his protective impulses kicking in, or perhaps simply being too allured at the opportunity of a fight. He was quick to let his thoughts be known. “If you want to fight Luke-senpai, you’ll have to get through me first,” Vee boldly stated, shooting a quick glare at Kapurimon. Despite never visiting Rosewood, he trusted his friend’s words wholeheartedly, so his retort had no meaning. But now it looks like all three former enemies were on good terms, something that made Vee smile. But as quickly as his smile appeared, it slowly began to fade and send him into a deep thought. All Digimon’s data, upon death, are recomposited back into a Digi-Egg in the Village of Beginnings where they are reborn, retaining all of their memories of their previous lives. So if all three of them were here, he wondered if they were here. “Hey, so umm...have you guys happened to see two other baby Digimon around here recently? Like two Viximons--a yellow one and a grey one?” he asked the three of them. If one was paying attention, they would notice that Vee’s happy go-lucky demeanor was completely gone, like it had been zapped away...

Luke was a little surprised at Vee’s action against Kapurimon’s challenge. As was Kapurimon, who promptly withdrew his aggression.
“S-sorry… just… I’ve had others lie to me before, and I don’t like it when I fall for them.” Kapurimon muttered through gritted teeth.
“Well, I promise you I’m not lying now.” Luke said. “When you reach Rosewood, look for a Gaomon named Owen, he’s a teacher there. He’s my friend, and he’ll do his best to put you on the right path so you’ll do great in your new life.”
Kapurimon paused to regard this promise, then decided to accept it. “Alright, I will.” he answered.
Still though, Luke was pleasantly surprised to see Vee jump to his defense so quickly, even referring to him as Senpai. Luke would take care to live up to such praise.
Then Vee asked if there were two others present in the Village of Beginnings. Luke knew at once who he was referring to. The Taomon and Doumon he and his companions fought at the Golden Rocks in the Western Flatlands. Luke didn’t know the specifics of that battle, he hadn’t been present at the de-briefing and he chose not to pester Vergil or his partners about it. But he knew for sure that it was something traumatic. And he understood. He had been pretty shaken by the experience in which he had first evolved to Perfect.
“No, we haven’t seen any Viximons.” Yokomon answered. “You might want to ask a caretaker about something like that.”
Supposing that was reasonable, Luke turned to Vee. “Well, let’s check it out with my mom’s.” he said. Then turned back to the babies. "Okay, you three have a good life now, we look forward to see what you make of yourselves."
After they bade their goodbyes, they then turned back to where his parents were. Only it was just one of them.
“Ah, done already, Lukey?” Lexis asked, the slender Elecmon asked, cheerfully. “Mandy’s gone off to tend to a clutch of eggs that just started hatching now. Did you have a good talk with the babies?”
“Yeah, we did, ma.” Luke answered. “Just… we were wondering, do you know if any babies that evolve to Renamon arrived recently?”
Lexis’s expression cooled a little as she folded her arms. Even if she was smaller than her son, her expression made him wither a little.
“Lukey, you know the Village policy, just because you’re my son, it doesn’t mean I can set you up with meeting every baby that comes through. You had a personal link to those other three babies, what’s your link with these Renamon babies?”
It seemed his mother had fallen into a verbal trap. “You said it as a plural, so there’s twins?” he asked. “Vee here has a link to them. They… uh… had a really bad fight recently, from what I heard, so, he’d like to talk to them, if possible.”
Lexis realized her blunder here and silently cursed, then sighed and supposed she could skate around policy here too. But only if she heard it from Vee as well.
“Is this true, Vee?” she asked, wanting to hear a confirmation.

Yggdrasill, what the hell was he doing? What in his mind drove him to ask that question, about them? The whole point of this day was to guide these former bad Digimon towards the right path. They were here to heal old wounds, not to re-open ones that still haven’t gone away. Yokomon answered that they haven’t seen any Viximons and should ask one of the caretakers. Luke seemed to follow suit, making Vee silently twiddle his fingers. Vee waved goodbye to the three baby Digimon as they made their way back to Lexie, still trying to hide his nervousness, albeit poorly. Hearing that it was within the Village rules that visitors are allowed to meet baby Digimon that were only associated with them, Vee’s uneasiness began to fade a bit. Seeing as they had just visited the terrorists from Terminus, he thought that was it; that the two of them had used their free pass for the day...only to quickly realize through Lexie’s words that Luke had a personal link to the three babies, not him. And on top of that, Lexie had mistakenly confirmed that the Priest Twins were indeed here. ‘Oh no…’ Vee thought, now visibly sweating. He looked at Lexie, who was waiting for his response. One side of the Veemon wanted to say nothing and run away, wanting to avoid answering the question. But on the other side, he remembered the Priest Twins and what they were like: cruel, sadistic, and overall just despicable monsters. Thinking of those two filled Vee with indignation. He turned up to Lexie, with newfound determination. “It is.” Vee stepped forward, coming to Luke’s side. His voice was firm and confident, almost as if AreoVeedramon was speaking for him. “Please, take me to them.”

Lexis then nodded as Vee confirmed Luke’s words. She saw the determination in his face, and decided it was the right thing to do to allow him this meeting. “Alright. I’ll lead you to them, but as you’ll see, they’re not really in a position for conversation at the moment.”
This made Luke a little worried. “What do you mean by that, ma?” he asked. “Is… something wrong?”
“Oh, no, nothing’s wrong, Lukey.” Lexis assured him as she led them to another part of the secluded village. “Just if you came here for a chat, you’ve come a bit early.”
Luke soon figured out what she meant when she led them to the digimon. Two tiny little ball digimon with a brushy tail attached – one yellow and one grey. They looked at the three rookie levels curiously, although they were too young to convey words.
“Ah, right… they’re Relemon, Baby I level.” he realized out loud. “So they can’t speak yet?”
“No, they cannot.” Lexis nodded. “However, if you have a negative history with them, Vee, maybe some gesture of kindness might be something that they’ll remember?”
By now, both digimon had turned to Vee, and seemed to regard him with a sense of nervousness. Even though they couldn’t yet speak or otherwise communicate, their digicores recognized that Vee had fought and defeated them. But with Luke and Lexis here, at least nothing bad would happen.

Vee nodded to Lexie, silently thanking her for granting him this opportunity. Even though initially, he didn’t want to know if the priest twins were here, his determination compelled him to. There are things he wants to say. No...things that he has to say. Upon hearing that the twins were in no position to talk, Vee titled his head confusingly. Just what did she mean by that? Well, that answer would come soon enough, as she guided him and Luke into a secluded part of the village. Upon arriving, there were two small baby Digimon, even smaller than the ones they had met a little bit ago. Now he understood why--they were too young to even talk. And yet, that didn’t detour him whatsoever. “That’s fine,” Vee said, albeit a bit coldy. “Whether they can talk or not, I don’t care; I just want them to listen.”Lexie suggested that he should show a gesture of kindness in order to jog their memories of him, but from the look of their faces, they’d already recognized him. “I don’t think that's gonna be needed. Monsters like them don’t even deserve it…” Vee began his slow approach to them. The wind and the crunching of leaves beneath his feet being the only noises filling the dead air around them. His fury began to slowly rise with each step. “You know who I am, don’t you?” Vee muttered, his rage not being visibly apparent. He stopped right in front of them. “‘Cuz I remember you two all too well. I remember your attacks against those innocent Digimon at the excavation site, Digimon that were just doing their jobs without bothering anybody. I remember your cackling laughs as you brutalized us. I remember hearing my Tamer, my brother, and his boyfriend screaming with tears in their eyes as you invaded our minds, digging out the worst of our memories. I remember…”Tears began to flow down his eyes as he gritted his teeth, a hot crimson rage filling his heart. For the first time in his life, his red eyes were filled with hatred and lament. “I remember being unable to do anything as my Tamer fell to the ground, coughing up blood and wheezing as he struggled to breath! How useless I felt when someone as strong as me couldn't do a damn thing to stop his pain! I’ll never forget those horrible sounds… and since that day, I’ve hated myself for not protecting him enough. And now, seeing you two here with a second chance in life, after everything you’ve done to not only us, but to the countless Digimon that had suffered…”The Veemon’s voice began to waver, his emotions fully overtaking him. “WHY THE HELL SHOULD YOU TWO MONSTERS EVEN DESERVE A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE?! HOW MANY DIGIMON BEGGED YOU FOR A SECOND CHANCE BEFORE YOU SLAUGHTERED AND LOADED THEM?! HOW MANY?!”

As they met the baby digimon, Luke grew a little worried from the tone of Vee’s voice. As far as the Elecmon knew, they had a very traumatic battle indeed, but at the very least he trusted him enough so that he wouldn’t make an act of violence against baby digimon.
Thankfully he did not, but, Luke and his mother could only look on in horror as Vee shouted at them. The baby digimon backed off instinctively with fear. And they cried.
“Vee, please, stop!” Luke begged his friend. “You’re yelling at babies! This isn’t right!” he turned to Lexis. “Ma, what can we do?”
“We’ll only act if he strikes them, Lukey.” the elder Elecmon answered. Lexis of course did not approve of anger being directed at baby digimon, but, she at least recognized that these baby digimon had done much evil in their previous lives, and it was Vee’s right to call them out on it. However, if it grew violent, then she would intervene immediately.
They then stood by as Vee revealed the full extent of his trauma at the hands of these digimon in their previous lives. They had almost killed Vee’s human partner Vergil. Luke gasped at this, he didn’t know what he’d do when confronted with a digimon that had tried to kill Colin as these digimon had done.
For the moment, Lexis allowed Vee to scream his words, but at the last thing he said, she felt the duty to step forward and correct him. “That’s enough, Vee.” she said, firmly. “You’ve said your part, but what you think is incorrect. The digimon that these two loaded in their previous lives was released when they were destroyed. Every digimon they loaded has been reborn anew. We know for a fact when they show up, when a large amount of digieggs show up at the same time. Mandy’s looking after the rest of them at this moment.”
Luke followed what his mother said, then aimed to gently pat Vee on the arm. “Yeah, that’s right. You’ve already defeated them once, shouldn’t that be enough?” he asked, hopefully. Then he added, “Vee, I… had no idea you had all this trauma backed up in you. I’d be happy to sit down with you and talk about it. I’ve been through a similar thing… that’s only if you want.”
For now, the two Relemon could do little but tremble from their experience.

Luke’s pleas fell on death ears to Vee as he continued to shout at the two baby Digimon. In his eyes, all he saw were the two malicious, monstrous, psychopathic fiends that not only tried to kill him, his brother, and his friends, but would have done far worse to the injured Digimon back at the excavation site. So why shouldn’t he yell at them? Now they knew what it was like to feel vulnerable, to feel helpless against someone that was stronger than them. If it were his tamer Colin, he would have reacted the same way. Before he could yell at the twins further, Lexis stepped in and intervened, her firm tone freezing the Veemon in his tracks. Hearing that all of the Digimon the twins loaded in their previous lives were released when they were killed took a moment to wrap around Vee’s head. He thought that once a Digimon’s data was fully absorbed by another, they won’t back—a Digimon’s true death. He had never considered there were more layers beneath the surface, until now. And he never knew. “I…” Blind panic rumbled through Vee’s mind and veins; he ran his hands through his head, pacing away from the two Digimon, Lexis and Luke and contemplating on what to do. But when he did, he realized that a few Digimon in the area were staring at him—some were Rookies, some were In-Training— and their expressions were filled with concern. The explosive outrage he had previously shown all but fizzled away, and what was left was a Veemon filled with sorrow and utter embarrassment. Vee cried and gently pushed Luke away. “I’m so sorry!” He ran, tears welting down his face. He needed to go somewhere, anywhere, that was not here. He bumped into a Palmon, apologized as righted her, stopping her from hitting the ground and continued on, leaving Luke and Lexis at the scene. The other Digimon looked on confused. He didn't know whether if he was in the right or wrong, but one thing is certain, he made a mistake asking about the two Relemon.

Luke wanted to tell Vee that it was alright, he understood his distress, but Lexis halted him by patting his shoulder. “Let him remove himself, Lukey, he’s regretful and ashamed.” she told her son.
“But Ma… I don’t want him to think I hate him over this…” Luke countered.
“Of course. I understand that.” Lexis said patiently. “So you should walk, not run after him. Let him regain his composure… he seems to have had completely the wrong idea just now. Give him a few minutes, okay?”
Luke understood what his mother meant by that. He had certainly had a few moments like that in his life, as well as Bellamy and Colin. Giving them time to recover from shock was generally a good thing.
“Are the babies gonna be okay, ma?” he asked.
“Yeah, I doubt they’ll remember this.” Lexis said. “I’ll give ‘em some milk and before long they would’ve forgotten all this happened. If they were in-trainings then it’d be another matter. So go on, you talk to Vee now. And listen to him too, okay?”
Luke nodded. “Okay, ma.” and then he followed Vee at a calm pace, giving him the opportunity to compose himself.
As Luke walked, the Elecmon wondered what the Veemon might be feeling right now. Death in the digital world was always a very complicated subject. Digimon died all the time, most of the time they came back, and sometimes they did not. The times they did not come back… Luke felt that keenly. In his time in the human world, he learned that humans never came back from death, and it was a very solemn and serious subject for them. Yet this was the digital world, where the lines were blurred somewhat. And of course it was reasonable for Vee to believe that digimon absorbed by others would not come back to life. Yet still, there was a chance for them after all, as his mother had said.
Also, Luke noted that Vee had never told anyone about his feelings of the events that happened at the Golden Rocks. The Elecmon had noted that he seemed quite subdued at the subject, but he had never guessed that he was holding back so much emotion about it, to the point where he screamed and cried as he released it. Luke didn’t think that was healthy.
So he took some breaths to calm himself, then approached the blue dragon digimon gently. “Are you okay, Vee?” he asked when he was in speaking distance. “Do you maybe wanna talk? I’m all ears… as my brother tells me.” he hoped that might crack the ice, given he had rather long ears.

Vee had escaped to a secluded part of the village more for his own sanity than anything else. Wanting to get away from the baby Digimon, and to get rid of the tension he created. He found a shaded place in the grass to sit and contemplate things. Like how he was going to apologize for his violent outburst. What was he thinking, screaming at two baby Digimon that couldn’t even remember him? He thought, he presumed, that he could handle things the way Luke handled the bad Digimon from Terminus Subway. He thought wrong. At the back of his mind constantly loomed the memory of his near death, and though it had resulted in a positive outcome, the fact remained: he had almost died, Gummy had almost died, and most importantly, Vergil had almost died. Compared to Digimon, who are able to get new leases of life after they die, humans didn’t get that sort of luxury. They only had one life, and once they died, they were gone for good. It was one of the lessons Vergil taught him and Gummy about humans and the human world in general. At first, the Veemon was sad at that revelation—at how vulnerable humans were. But he quickly got over it, cheerfully exclaiming that whatever danger that came their way, he’ll be sure to protect Vergil, even if it cost him his life. What a stupid mindset. He lowered his head down to his knees. That way of thinking kept him going for this long and now, he had nothing left except to face the cold fact of reality. Luke’s voice was a gentle lilt coming in front of Vee, as the dragon Digimon lifted his head up over his knees at the approaching Elecmon. He shook his head, darting his eyes away. Vee took a few moments to recollect himself, trying to find his voice and what to say. He didn’t mind if Luke sat next to him as he waited for his response. “Have you ever felt like a failure before, Luke?” Vee asked. He wasn’t looking at the Elecmon, but straight ahead, apparently watching the In-Training Digimon play with one another.

When Luke caught up to Vee, the blue drake shook his head when he asked if he was okay. But at the very least, he didn’t tell him to leave, and the Elecmon was grateful for that.
Recognizing from his composure that he was still feeling ashamed and miserable from his outburst, Luke sat down a couple of feet next to him, not too close to infringe on his privacy, but close enough to be heard when talking normally. The view was nice, seeing all those baby digimon bouncing around, playing, all lives innocent in Luke’s eyes.
Vee eventually asked if he had ever felt like a failure. Luke took a short while to reply. He could give a basic answer of yes, how he had failed in some mission or some exam or whatever, or he could tell of what he thought was his most gravest failure, one that haunted him to this day, that so far he could only talk to Colin and Bellamy about it comfortably. Eventually, he regarded this as the right time to tell Vee.
“Yeah, I do.” Luke answered, his voice subdued and hesitant. “That time… I failed to save my best friend.”
Where to begin though? Luke supposed he had to provide the full context. “You know, I grew up in this place twice.” he began. “First time as a new digimon born from the love of my parents. The second time as a digimon reconfigured after being destroyed. The first time, I went by the nickname ‘Leky’. I was a solo digimon back then, without a human partner or a brother. My parents wanted me to take up their line of work, stay in the village and look after babies, but I didn’t. I wanted to travel, so I took up a job as a courier. Eventually, I encountered an Impmon near Terminus City. He threatened me at first, but I eventually figured out he was just lonely. I talked him out of attacking me and offered to help him out. He accepted, but one of his enemies showed up and attacked him. I helped fight him off, then we became best friends after that. Impy and Leky we were known, and we had a great time as a couple of solo digimon.”
Luke didn’t want to talk for too long about this, so he skipped the adventures they went through, except for the last one.
“We had a lot of adventures, most of them successful, but the last one was a failure. We were tracked down by another of Impy’s enemies, this time he was a Champion while we were still Rookies. A Dinohumon. We thought if we used teamwork we could at least hold him off and escape, but… we were both tired from our travels, and we had no chance in the end. He defeated us both, and left us to die. And we did, being reconfigured here and ending up hatching from the same egg. While we were given new lives as Luke and Bellamy, our lives as Leky and Impy were over. We lost so much, and so I never want that to happen again. Not to my partner, brother, or myself. Or my friends.”
Luke had felt quite light-headed after revealing all that. In fact he was wondering whether it was the right thing to even say to Vee after what happened. Curiously, the Elecmon looked at him, wondering what he made of all that. But still, he had to make sure he was feeling alright. “Sorry if I got too heavy just now, just you asked a question and I felt like I had to answer honestly. Do you feel okay after that?”
Luke only then realized that tears had fallen from his eyes as he had been talking. He tried to wipe them away as though he hadn't.

With a question like that, Vee didn’t expect Luke to answer right away. It was, in fact, a tough question after all. You’d have to comb through a specific incident to find the right example you’re looking for. In this case, he didn’t expect the Elecmon at all to answer him since nothing could compare to what he had experienced. But to his surprise, Luke answered that he had. It was his inability to save a friend. He shifted his position slightly, turning towards his friend. Luke revealed that he grew up in the Village of Beginnings twice. In his first life, he was known as ‘Leky’, and was a courier that delivered mail throughout the Digital World. He eventually came into contact with an Impmon named Impy, and soon enough, they became best friends and went on lots of adventures together. On their last adventure, however, they came face-to-face with Impy’s enemies, a Dinohumon. Hearing that caused Vee’s eyes to slightly widen. One of the enemy Digimon that Luke eliminated at the Terminus Subway was a Dinohumon. Despite the two of them giving it their all, they were no match for the champion-level Digimon and were killed in the end. Vee picked up his head and silently gasped at this. He didn’t know how to honestly react to this—that he and Bellamy went through the exact same experience as he and Gummy did in their previous life, only with them, they weren’t so lucky. Vee darted his eyes away, trying to take this all in. Seeing the Elecmon tearing made him tear up as well. “I’m so…sorry to hear that,” he sniffled, wiping away a tear that was streaming down his face. “I feel…a little bit better.” He realized that despite their different experiences, he and Luke were not so different, like two peas in a pot. He sat silently in thought for a moment, his eyes turning back to the baby Digimon that we’re playing in the distance. “Is that why you killed that Dinohumon back at the subway the way you did?” Vee carefully queried. “Even though he wasn’t the same Dinohumon that you and Bellamy lost to, did you…see your killer in him before you did what you did, for revenge?”He didn’t mind if Luke didn’t decide to give his response, seeing as it was a personal question.

Luke was glad to hear those words from Vee. He had been worried that it may have been too presumptuous to put his own experience in the place of Vee’s, but he hadn’t meant it in that way at all. He had only wanted to tell Vee that he completely understood how he felt about what had happened at the Golden Rocks, and had hoped that he could demonstrate that things could still work out fine even if the worst case had instead happened.
Then Vee asked if that was the reason he killed Dinohumon at the Terminus City station. Luke shook his head in denial at once.
“No, absolutely not. I knew this was a different Dinohumon.” Was it though? Luke thought back to the moment when he had delivered the fatal shot. Did he really want to do it? He raised a paw to his head as he tried to figure out what was going on at the time. All he wanted was to subdue the terrorists and make the station safe. His line of thinking was that letting that digimon live, with all his defiance and threats would not achieve that. Had a part of him that wanted revenge against the Dinohumon that had killed Impy and Leky played a part?
Luke mulled over what he wanted to say next. He knew that it had been a traumatic experience for Vee, so he had to be careful in his words. “It was a very difficult situation in that room, Vee. At the time, I was the only one at a level able to subdue that Dinohumon. He made it clear through his words that he had no intention of cooperating. I wish it had gone another way, but, we were there to save lives that day. And he was there to kill. I did what I did, and didn’t load him, now he’s back here, and hopefully repenting for what he did.”
Luke didn’t really know what to say next, so remained silent for a while, simply watching the baby digimon play about. There was a good life ahead for them all, he hoped. One day they would evolve to Rookie and head out to make their new lives somewhere, like he had all those years ago, searching out his human partner Colin with his twin brother Bellamy.
“I think you’re a good digimon, Vee.” Luke eventually said. “You obviously care about justice a lot. From what I hear, what Doumon and Taomon did was monstrously wrong, and I think your heart was in the right place for calling them out on their actions.”

“Right…” was all Vee said before turning away from Luke and staring out into blank space. He kind of knew he was going to give that response, on how the two Dinohumon were entirely different in that scenario. But the way Luke had executed them, one would expect that it was to fulfill some personal vendetta. But as the Elecmon said, that Dinohumon had no interest in surrendering and was not going to stop until he had reached a sufficient body count, so he breathed a sigh of solace from that, fully accepting that he had made the right move. Luke then commented on how he was a good Digimon, how he cared about justice a lot, and how he was in the right for calling out Doumon and Taomon for what they have done. Vee sat back, silently thoughtful. “Was I? I don’t know anymore,” he muttered. Vee thought back into how he handled that situation. Had they waited a bit longer to come here— a bit more until the two twins would evolve to where they can talk, things might have played a bit more differently. While his line of thinking was in the right, he’d let his emotions get the better of him, and in turn, everyone who saw his outburst now probably see him as an unhinged Digimon. After a few moments of silence, Vee stood up and took a few steps forward, gazing into the partly cloudy skies. “I’ll be honest with you, a part of me hates myself for what happened,” Vee explained. “I just can’t stop thinking about what happened at Golden Rock, that we barely made it out alive through the skins of our teeth, that the only way for us to evolve to the Perfect level was to relive the worst days of our lives. I couldn’t protect my brother, his boyfriend, and my Tamer…” He paused, breathing slowly through his nose. “And no matter how many times I play it over and over in my head, no matter how many times I rationalize it—justify it, it always comes back to the fact that I wasn’t good enough.”Vee stood in an uncomfortable silence for a few seconds, hanging his head low. A partnered Digimon like him has the responsibility to protect their human at all cost, emotionally and physically. But if he can’t accomplish either of those things for Vergil, what good was he? “It’s why I’ve been distant lately from everyone.” Vee eventually said. “It’s why I haven't been going on any missions with Vergil and Gummy lately and just lounging around, not caring if I get in trouble with Ms. Sophie. They got over it, so why can’t I?”

Luke could tell that Vee was in quite a bad headspace at the moment. So he let him alone for a few moments, hoping he wouldn’t take the worst from his answers. The Elecmon regretted how he had acted in that moment, yes, he could have probably took that Dinohumon in alive in that moment, but that moment was chaos. Luke had no way of knowing whether or not the Dinohumon had a failsafe to carry out his attack on the station. And as he thought back on that moment, he had decided to settle the matter in the Village of Beginnings rather than there, when he didn’t even know if his own brother Bellamy was okay, let alone Vergil and Gummy.
Luke didn’t respond to Vee’s first question, just he remained seated next to him, willing to hear his next words without prejudice. Eventually, Vee spoke. Luke listened about his experiences at the Golden Rocks. Luke closed his eyes and shuddered as he remembered his own reaction to such a situation. Yes, Colin had been able to evolve him and his brother to Perfect level, but even still, Luke had paid attention to the wrong targets, so that the worst of the battle had happened with his back turned. Their mentors, Ryota and Valt had almost died because of that, and at the time all he and Bellamy had focused on was revelling at the fact that they had evolved so quickly to Perfect level, in the end failing to prevent the critical damage that had happened to them.
Eventually, Luke found the words. “It’s okay, Vee, I made mistakes just like that when I first evolved to Perfect. And, I have yet to encounter a digimon partner that carried out their ideal evolution scenario to perfection. Me and my brother… no other words can describe it better, we fucked it up. We almost got our mentors killed. But we got everyone through it in the end, and we learned from it.”
Luke remained quiet for a little while to let Vee absorb what he said. Then Vee admitted that it was why he was being distant from everyone. Luke looked at him and sighed with sympathy, understanding just how much it sucked to fail his human partner.
“Oh, Vee…” the Elecmon said, patting his arm. “That’s not a healthy way of approaching this at all. Yes, Vergil and Gummy might have their own ways of coping with what happened, but that’s not an excuse for you to shut off to everything and cut yourself off. Gummy’s still your brother and he needs you. Same with Vergil, he’s your human partner. You can’t cut yourself off from them and expect everything to heal itself. You need to heal alongside them. And I’m happy to help you any time with that. I’ve had moments like this with Colin and Bellamy.”
Luke hoped he hadn’t ventured too far in his assumptions here. The Elecmon realized that he might have said things a little too uncomfortable for someone as vulnerable as Vee was in this situation. But, he hoped for the best. He knew Vee was something of a strong, stoic and robust digimon that could do well with more emotional talk than he had so far got. He wondered how Vee would react to this, hoping for the best.
