The Great Knockout (Closed)

"Scientists and health officials are at a loss to explain what is causing this mass outbreak of citizens passing out-"
"The cases are growing more and more by the minute; people are just collapsing on the street out there-"
"This car crash is just massive, thankfully nobody was hurt but the driver is not responding, and has been confirmed to be one of the many victims of-"
"Why is this happening to us!?" The Great Knockout.
That's what this event will eventually come to be known as. No one knows what is happening or how it started, but it became very clear that something was happening to the people of Tokyo. One by one, without reason or warning, people were beginning to suddenly and unexpectedly drop to the ground in an unconscious state. Their breathing would remain functional, but the rest of them was as if their soul had just vanished, their eyes being eerily void of any sign of life.
This wasn't an isolated incident; this was happening randomly to people all throughout the city. It wasn't happening to everyone, but the pattern was beyond inconsistent. It would happen to people driving in the street, causing their cars to crash. It would happen to those on the subway, leaving them open to collapsing right onto the tracks. Hospitals were filling up in droves, and the people were scared of when it was going to happen to them next.
Not even our friendly neighborhood Tamers were safe from this fate. In AEGIS HQ alone, six beds were occupied by unfortunate Digital World involved humans who had been affected by this unexpected phenomenon. Johan Walker, Kaya Matsui, Yuji Moriyama, Hisato Aizawa, and Zack Zello were all laying in the infirmary of AEGIS HQ, all with lifeless looks in their eyes. These were just the Tamers that AEGIS had located and were able to bring in, surely there were more out there.
"Kaya... please no, why did it have to be you..." Hawkeye the Hawkmon muttered, crying next to his partner as he held her hand.
"Yuyu, this isn't funny anymore, please wake up," Kazuo the Tentomon pleaded to his own lifeless partner Yuji, unable to stop the tears from running down his eyes as well.
"..." Dokamon stood by his own partner Johan, not saying a thing but still clearly distraught by these events. He clenched his hands tight... surely there had to be a logical explanation for all of this!

"sniff...So...are we just going to sit here at their bedsides and watch them waste away?" Marigold said, speaking up from the bedside of her beloved father. He had been in the middle of a patrol, helping someone with directions on their bicycle when he suddenly thumped to the floor, an utterly mundane moment in his heroic lifestyle that had turned directly into a nightmare. Marigold had already been through the panic, the anger, the bargaining with god or whoever else was listening and the only thing that was left was the core of her father's teachings still left dead center in her soul.
He was still dressed in costume, his helmet propped up on the end table beside him. She wouldn't have let them take it off of him for anything, he still needed it because soon enough he was going to be back out on those streets doing exactly what it was that came so naturally to him. marigold wouldn't let that die, it was a part of her too. Cut everything else away and the only thing left was...
"There's a mystery afoot and people are getting hurt. The only reason nobody's straight up dead from this so far is because we've all gotten lucky. So I say we've all only got one option." She said, trying her best to put on some of her father's bravado, the sureness of foot and of feeling that made it so he never stumbled when he needed the right words. "The heroes are all laid out for the count, well, it looks like the sidekicks are gonna have to pick up the slack." She said, speaking with a certain reverence for the idea. She didn't have any negative connotation in the word "sidekick" if anything she seemed to speak the term with more than a small amount of pride. From her perspective that's what they were, the junior partners and young wards of the humans that had carried them this far, it seemed only obvious to her that they form up and come together when there came a problem that the humans couldn't solve. "We come from all over, our partners have each given us a certain set of skills. Whether they're our parents, our siblings, or our best friends we've learned from them and I for one know that I've learned enough to find the solution to this. I'll do this on my own if I have to, but who else is going to be walking out that door with me?" She said, pointing to the door of the observation room. She turned and started buzzing out, anyone that followed her would be in this until the fat lady sang.

In the world we lived in, the unordinary happened regularly, and without cause for explanation. Some were used to this idea, some were used to the idea of things not requiring a 'why.' A bandaged up Hisato lay still in the infirmary, his eyes open, breathing...yet...
One of the two who had brought him in, a crimson Veemon who...pretty much deactivated his holosuit the moment he got into the HQ and here, glanced on over to Marigold. There was a brief hum. "No, wasn't really planning on it. Doubt my brother was, either." He looked on over towards Scarab, who had...well, not deactivated his holosuit. He was silent. "I guess the only problem is where do you even start with a phenomena that...came out of nowhere?"
To note, the Veemon was definitely following Marigold. Scarab followed along too, the Holosuit deactivating to leave an azure Wormmon. He glanced over to Kazuo, Hawkeye and Dokamon. "...Come. I'm sure they would rather you fight for them than mourn before the puzzle's over."
So, there had to be one thing addressed. "...So, where did this start? First victim? What do we know here?" The Wormmon inquired once he had caught up.

"No, we are not," Dokamon responded to Marigold's question, not looking away from the unresponsive Johan in front of him. "We are merely waiting for a more thorough analysis of what is truly happening here. We still do not have enough data to calculate even a hypothesis."
Marigold continued to speak, suggesting that they could find a solution to this weird occurrence together if they combined all of their skills. She even started to buzz out the door, with everyone else beginning to follow her before Dokamon stood up once more. "Those were not our orders. We are required to stay here and observe our partners' medical state in case they get worse."
"But we can't just sit here in the meantime feeling sorry for ourselves," Hawkeye said to Dokamon. "You really think the best course of action is to sit here and wait for everything to magically be resolved?"
"You are twisting my words. I suggest waiting until the other agents have figured out the cause of this madness instead of going out there and potentially being afflicted by it yourself. We still do not know of the reason these events are occurring... especially since we lack the data on if Digimon are affected."
Before the group left, the door opened up to reveal an AppHackmon... Johan's merc, Zero. He looked at each and every Digimon in the room before speaking up. "You're, uh... you're all wanted on the Operations floor."
Zero would then lead the group of six to the Operations Floor, where two more Digimon were waiting: Speed and Psych. The floor itself consisted of big machines, including a giant screen that was listing some valuable information at the moment, including security camera footage involving humans passing out thanks to this event.
"Thank you all for coming," Psych said to the group. "The other agents are currently busy de-escalating the situation in the city. I'm sure that I don't need to explain what is happening to you, but for review's sake, I shall. At approximately 0800 hours today, an even started occurring to the humans of Shibuya where their brains cease to function entirely at random."
"And by 'at random,'" Speed added, "I'm pretty sure they mean 'pretty much only affects humans that are driving'!"
"Thanks to Speed's quick work around the city, many fatalities and serious injuries were prevented, but the number of humans falling to this affliction are growing more and more by the second."
"Including Johan, Kaya and Yuyu..." Kazuo said sadly.
"As well as Zack."
"And Hisato."
"Isn't there anything we can do to help them?"
"Look, kid, we've been trying to work on this for hours," Zero stated, "but whatever is happening... it really shouldn't be happening to begin with! The humans in the Med Bay aren't responding like humans should, it's as if they all were cursed by some magic spell or something!"
"Because they were," a sudden voice echoed as a portal opened up in the middle of the group. And none other than Weston Sparkwood was the one that stepped through. "A magic curse that was, regrettably, partially my fault..."

"I'm a superhero, I don't TAKE orders." Marigold said, spinning in midair to face right at the dissenting Dokamon. She was not going to just sit there and wait for someone else to fix the problem. It wasn't the way she had been raised and it wasn't what she needed to do to keep from cracking under the pressure of seeing her father in that hospital bed. he was all she had and she was going to do something about it. "If you wanna hang around here, sitting on your thumb then you can be my gust. Something out there did this and I plan to stop it by any means required." Marigold said, turning back out the door only to be stopped by Zero. She didn't respond to the summons directly but moved along despite the rankling she did at following AEGIS' lead, even partially.
"Glad to know I brought my father here against my better judgement and you guys have been able to find less than nothing since then." Marigold said in response to Psych and Speed saying they hadn't found much of an explanation. She was being unfair and deep down she knew it but she was covering up the bottomless pit of fear in the center of her chest with any emotional baggage she could use to fill it and avoid thinking about being totally on her own for the first time ever.
And then...Weston came in. And the look in Marigold's eyes changed on a dime. She went from flippant and tunnel-visioned to violently, animalistically angry.
"What..." Her body glowed and grew, shoulders bunched with tension as the buzzing FanBeemon transformed into a silver clawed Stingmon. "Did you..." Her voice continued to grind like steel on stone as she grew even further into the red gem encrusted exoskeleton of her JewelBeemon from. "DO?!" She stood there, towering over most everyone else present clutching the glaive weapon of this form so tightly in one hand that her exoskeletal knuckles turned what from the straining pressure she was putting them under. She didn't do anything rash, not yet, the claws on her feet clenching against the ground hard enough to leave deeply carved scratches in the stone like a kaiju leaving footprints in tarmac. "Because you had better have a way to fix it 'magic man' after my father stuck his neck out for you and nearly got himself KILLED!" She said. Again, she was being unfair, caught up in an emotional tide of fear and grief that she couldn't control even if she had the mechanisms to fully understand it. She should know that her father would never have approved of her mudslinging or feeling entitled because they'd helped someone in the past. That's not why he did what he did, it's not how he acted and it's simply not the way that the man's brain worked.
Anyone who had met the pair before would begin to see just how much of a "handle" Zack had to keep on Marigold sometimes. She was protective, defensive, overly willing to lash out at anything she could even partially define as a threat.

There was a lot to address here, and there also wasn't much time to go through things bit by bit as one normally could. Hopefully? Words. Semantics. Ech. Whereas there was snide commentary from the wannabe hero (who Scarab was...fairly certain was just a kid, he couldn't really blame her for how she was acting or feeling,) the brothers from Hachiko remained silent for the most part.
What they were dealing with was quite the anomaly either way. Of course there wasn't going to be much info readily available. "Can't help that--people have jobs and the automobile caught on hard, buddy." Gyo added--hopefully to drive some sort of wedge through the tension. Of course, the notion of a magic spell...
...That made both of the brothers raise a brow. Magic never had to make sense. Magic wasn't rooted in science or anything. "That..." Gyo began, before he was cut off by Weston's timely entrance. He had...heard of someone like this before--a wizard in Rosewood. So, he was going to try to hear the guy out.
The immediate issue that had presented itself was Marigold finding a target to vent her frustrations upon. Verbally, at least. As swiftly as the FanBeemon had digivolved to JewelBeemon, Scarab found himself moving to do similarly, stepping between Marigold and Weston as best as he could as he warp digivolved to...
The same Digimon. JewelBeemon--yet, azure. "Hey. Kid. You said you were a superhero, right? Think about that for a moment. I don't know you--but, think about what a hero would do, yeah? Don't know your dad, either, but he'd probably say that...Heroes are better than this. Magic Man's not entirely responsible for this--and even still, he's...pretty torn up about it. So, just take a step back. Deep breaths. Think. We're all in the same sort of situation. You aren't alone--but we need to be on the same wavelength if we want to have even a shred of hope in saving your dad, or my boss."
It was quite unfair to lambast someone before they even explained what happened. Gyo...took a deep and sharp inhale. The Veemon looked over to everyone else. He wasn't sure if they would be stepping in if that...didn't work.

Dokamon just blinked when Marigold called herself a superhero. "Speed and Psych mentioned that quirk about you and your... father," Dokamon said, looking back at the unconscious Zack. "Regardless, you are not a 'superhero.' And while you are under AEGIS's roof, you will follow AEGIS's commands. You'll have a better chance helping to stop this in here than you are blindly flying around out there."
On the Operations floor, Marigold's unfair comment did not go unnoticed by the others. "Comments like that do not help in the slightest, kid," Zero said, not looking up from his work. "It's not our fault that something like this just don't have a clear answer."
"They're trying to help, Marigold," Hawkeye said. "Cut them some slack."
And that's when Weston arrived, stating that the reason for this event was at least partially his fault. Dokamon, Hawkeye and Kazuo all immediately felt the sting of assumed betrayal as they just stared incredulously at the Wisemon. But Marigold took it a step further. She warp-digivolved to her JewelBeemon form, furious at Weston and demanding that he have a way to fix this. "M-Marigold, I-"
"STOP THIS INSTANT!" Kazuo growled, flying up in front of Marigold's face, his personality shifted to that of his royal Focused state. "I've known Weston far longer than you have, and I can say with the utmost certainty that he would never intend something like this to happen! I'm just as upset about it as you are, but Weston has not even explained what has happened yet. This is unfair to him. You're better than this, Marigold."
"Kazuo...?"
"She has every right to be angry with me," Weston admitted. "Even I'm angry at myself for what has happened..." The Wisemon conjured a spell to present a hologram-like image to the group, showcasing a light blue mystical-looking orb. "This is the object that has caused this damage... the Eye of the Soul. It is an artifact that holds its own mystical pocket dimension, and it gives the owner the ability to transfer the souls of living creatures from their bodies into it. It is useful for certain cases, but if in the wrong hands, it could lead to devastating results."
"And I assume that is exactly what happened," Dokamon commented.
Weston nodded. "A thief broke into my house early this morning. I only caught a glimpse of them, but immediately I knew they had taken the Eye. I began my search for them, hoping I could stop them before they did something horrible with it... but I never imagined that that something would be so huge. This thief... I believe they are collecting human souls. Many human souls. For what purpose, I do not know. But if they are not stopped soon... every human in Tokyo will suffer the fate of your friends."

"Family, Weston." Marigold said, her voice still burning with bitter fire as she shrunk down to her Stingmon form. She was in business mode and she wasn't going to be out of it until this problem was solved. "The same fate as my FAMILY. My ONLY family." She said, letting it drop for the moment as she instantly spun to face Dokamon, her shoulders squared for confrontation with the little beast.
"Screw you, buddy. Don't you dare question my father, his convictions or what he does. I'm not following anybody's orders on shit, everybody who knows anything about how we do things knows that we show up to help, not to get barked at for not falling in line. I'm not one of your Men in Black and refuse to play along as if I am. I'm. A. Superhero. And I will be cold and dead in the ground before I let some stuffed shirt, jackbooted pencil pusher tell me to shut up and take my marching orders." Marigold said, steaming at Dokamon but in a much less...threatening way than she had been with Weston an instant before, Psych and Speed would recognize in an instant that this was her father's influence coming out of her mouth one hundred and ten percent. AEGIS could work WITH the vigilantes but they would never be able to get the pair to agree to work FOR them.
Marigold took a deep breath in and a deep breath out, clenching her blade fingered fists and then turning back toward Weston with a much more centered stance. She needed to hear the plan, her father always had a plan, something big and daring that would catch the bad guy dead in his tracks and put him right up against the wall. She could do bold, that's basically all she could do right now because if she stopped long enough to think about it she would come apart at the edges and break down shivering and sobbing. She had to hold onto her father's mission, find the person hurting people and put a stop to it before it could get any worse. it was strong, it was rock solid, it was immutable. She just had to hang onto it until it was all over and then she could collapse later. She felt surrounded, suffocated by a place like AEGIS, her father always warned her about falling in lock step behind an organization like it, her little tirade against Dokamon using a lot of the terminology that her father used behind their back directly to their faces, whether it was fair or not the organization and the masked heroes had a difference in priorities and an even bigger difference in perspective. She was thinking about each and every person being hurt as an individual, that was why she was here, and it's why she was listening now.

Well.
The siblings could see that this was already going to be a very stressful day--well, that was a lie. It already was, when one takes everything that had already happened into consideration. At the very least Marigold had taken Scarab's advice to take a few breaths.
"You know, maybe we should just stay free agents." Gyo mumbled. "You should probably invest--or devise a security system of sorts. Barring that, actually upgrading it so this doesn't happen again. Then again, that's what I'd do and I'm not you. Sorry about all the flak going your way regardless, Mister Sparkwood." Seriously, getting shit about things you can't really fix was the worst. It's why Gyo didn't like mediating discussions.
Scarab could be heard taking a deep breath...and exhaling. "They say mistakes can always be corrected. If there is any time in the world to be testing such words, it would be now. How are we going to be tracking the Eye?" The JewelBeemon asked, as he promptly degenerated back into the form of an azure Wormmon. "...Moreover, what in the Dark Area could they have use for so many human souls for...?"

As unwilling as Marigold was to back down, Dokamon was equally as unwilling. In his mind, it didn't matter if you were in AEGIS or not; you had to follow their rules, their procedures. Going off to do your own thing is more than likely enough to get you killed. "Surely I do not have to remind you of the last time we went against AEGIS protocol, Marigold," Dokamon said. He, of course, was referring to the mission with Grandmaster... the one where Psych had originally first disappeared. "If you want a better outcome for your father, you must-"
"Just drop it, Dokamon," Speed said to the blue cyborg Digimon. "You and Marigold are just gonna go on for hours and hours about this. Trust me, my brother and I have experience with those two. They're about as stubborn as... well, you, actually."
Scarab would be the one to ask the most important question next: just how were they supposed to track the Eye? "Thankfully, I have a solution for that... but it is going to be an unpleasant experience, and I will need your full consent before I proceed with what I am about to do."
"I don't like the sound of this..." Hawkeye muttered, crossing his wings.
"The way the Eye works is that you must recite the ancient words with the beings you want to send to the Eye in mind. I can cast a tracking spell and a protection spell on you all before sending you into the Eye myself, and that way I can locate where your souls go in the real world. With the protection spell, you may even be able to save the trapped souls from within. Unfortunately, your physical bodies will be more or less exactly like the ones of your friends and family. It is a heavy ask, and you are welcome to decline if you so please."
"So you wanna send us to where our friends are going?" Kazuo asked. "Well that's a no brainer! Of course I wanna go!"
"I promised I would do anything to save Kaya... and this counts as anything. I accept this mission, Weston."
"I also accept. It sounds like a logical plan, a battle strategy on two fronts. What of the rest of you?"

Marigold was silently cursing her father's good nature. She wanted nothing more than to grip this Dokamon around the throat and start thumping him over the head until he shut his bootlicking mouth but there was always that echoing sound in her mind of her father reminding her that getting to the bottom of the attack was more important than anything else right now. Zack may be a victim in this moment but the first thing he would have told her is that the most important factor is all of the OTHER people who didn't have Digimon children swinging for them, who were just dropping unconscious in the street. The longer this went on, the more likely it was that somebody died and the bodies started to stack
"Breath in...and breath out. If getting over yourself is what's needed to help people in trouble, then getting over yourself is what you've gotta do, baby girl." Marigold said, repeating it to herself, a little mantra coming directly from her father's mouth in her mind's eye as she shook it off. "Weston, that's not even a question. People are in trouble and the longer this goes on the more likely it is something irreversible happens. Send me in." She said, without pause or hesitation. Her father was still the most important thing to her in this scenario but she was simply using that as fuel, funneling into the drive to help the people who were being affected by whatever this was.
She reached up, rolling her leg along the crimson fabric of her scarf. It was the symbol her father had tethered to her, the constant reminder of the heroic ideal, cast in the image of one of the greatest heroic dynasties of all time. She was wearing a part of it now.
She didn't look over at Dokamon, she knew the smug little thing might take that as another opportunity to push her buttons and she was basically running on pure parental mimicry right at that moment. If she let her own feeling break through too hard she might not get herself back under control. She had to take every little step slow and steady, what would her father do, and then follow that thought as hard as she could.

The mention of the consequences of going against one's protocol did prompt both of the brothers to raise a brow. It was likely something that was not relevant to right now, but...Past mistakes do inspire one to do better, don't they? Either way, at Scarab's question being answered?
"Doesn't matter how unpleasant it is. We have a duty to the people around us to fix this. We have a duty to Shibuya to fix this."
"In short? We're in." Gyo finished that for his sibling. This may well have been the only thing that the group seemed able to unanimously agree on, and whether that was something good or bad was...anyone's guess. Of course, a thought entered Scarab's head.
"On another note...Would it be wise to jogress before that? Just to save resources?"

There was little to no hesitation to accept Weston's offer to send them into the Eye of the Soul. If it would help save their partners and by extension the rest of Shibuya, then of course it would be a no-brainer to accept. On the subject of jogressing, Weston shook his head no. "When it comes to the Eye, the form you take will not matter; I will still be transporting six souls into the pocket dimension, and power levels will mean nothing in there."
"What are you referring to?" Dokamon asked, crossing his arms.
"When a Digimon is in the Eye of the Soul, they will not only be stuck in Rookie form, but they also will not be able to use their abilities properly. But that does not mean you won't be able to fight."
"So you wish for us to go into the Orb and battle whatever may be in there without our powers... I sense many red flags with this scenario."
"What else aren't you telling us?" Kazuo asked.
"Well... with the protection spell, if it happens to take too much damage inside, then your souls will be transported to the same place that holds all the others. In other words... you'll become just as trapped as your friends."
"This sounds like a suicide mission," Hawkeye said.
"It may as well be, but my decision remains unchanged. Send us into the Eye, Weston."
Hawkeye and Kazuo looked at each other, unsure about this whole thing, but eventually they both stood beside Dokamon, waiting for the spell to be cast on them. After Weston cast the protection spell on the six Digimon, he'd begin chanting an ancient spell in a language that sounded unlike any other that they heard so far. Dokamon, Hawkeye, Kazuo and the others would feel themselves slowly getting woozier and woozier until eventually, they just blacked out...
Dokamon would be the first of the six to magically appear, and the first thing he did was take a look at his surroundings. The area he was in looked unlike any area he had ever been to before: an endless horizon of cloud-like ground with a sky in constant sunset. There was also a certain dream-like feel to this area that he couldn't quite describe. "This must be the inside of the Eye of the Soul."
Hawkeye and Kazuo would appear next, both of them also taking a look at their surroundings. "Nothing but clouds and sky... needless to say, this is not what I was expecting at all."
"At least it's not scary in here like I thought it would be!" Kazuo cheered as he picked up a bit of the magical cloud, before it evaporated in his claws. "Aw..." Regardless of Kazuo's faults, the Tentomon still managed to bring a bit of positivity and wholesomeness to this undoubtedly creepy situation.

"The one thing I've always been taught is that it doesn't take powers to do what needs to be done. The job needs doing, and I'm here to stand up and get it done." Marigold said, actually taking some real pride in what was usually the silliest and most maligned part of her father's actions. The idea that he would just charge head first into a fight knowing that he might be outnumbered and outgunned, whether it be four thugs with knives or a digimon the size of a city bus, he never let it stop him. "Besides, what's the fun in a mission that DOESN'T have a risk of horrible dea-" Marigold was cut off by the climax of the spell, feeling like her mind shut off like a light for a moment, like being conscious enough to remember the moment you fell asleep.
"-th...oh wow." Marigold said, looking down and instantly starting to buzz her wings off the ground as to not touch the cloud cover that was beneath their feet. She looked around and saw the endless twilight zone stretching off in every direction and tried not to shiver. "Yea, cool, I wanted to be in a Dr. Strange comic today, that's totally what I had in mind getting up this morning." She joked. Jokes and snide comments and sarcastic observations all to keep her from actually internalizing the sinking feeling that was settling down into her chest.
"Alright folks, Weston said that he was sending us right where everyone else's souls went. Shouldn't be too hard to spot a couple dozen or hundred people most of whom are probably pretty openly panicking by now. Stick close, stay ready and for once in our lives hope that this goes smoothly." Marigold said as she floated up a little higher on her wings. She wasn't exactly going to spot very many landmarks in a landscape that was mostly fluffy white nothing in every direction but eventually it might help them locate people if what she was saying was true and they had gotten to the point of pacing around shouting in a panic. "Just, yknow, try not to let it sink in that there's some psycho out there who is literally collecting human souls. I'm sure they're going to let us waltz in and free these people without so much as a raised voice, she said, deluding herself." Marigold groaned at the truth in her own sarcastic comment. At this point it was a race to see if they could find the people BEFORE whoever had trapped them realized the rescue party was there.

"Oh, an equalized power level sort of situation! Those are always interesting--the last time I got to do one of those, I wound up polluting an island's gene pool by helping a girl with depression."
It was probably the actual worst way anyone could ever put that, especially Gyo, but that was basically what happened before that mission died. Of course, Scarab realized something practically immediately about Weston's words.
"...Moreover, if those rules apply to Digimon, then if the culprit may be in there, they're -also- stuck in Rookie. And unable to fight properly. Unless there's some crazy exception for whosoever holds the eye. Either way. Again. We're in. Just send us in and we'll do what has to be done."
Whatever that may entail. Finally, within the Eye, Gyo and Scarab were the last to appear--in their rookie forms. So, a cerulean Wormmon and a crimson Veemon were rolling their limbs. Weirdly, this was not their first rodeo with dream-like settings over in the skies.
...And it felt just as strange.
"We're lucky it's not more macabre." Scarab spoke. There was really no path to go but forward, yet...There was a slight problem. Where were they supposed to be looking? The one thing they could really do was follow the group and hope they didn't get jumped.
