As Duffer and Kotemon walked the streets, Kotemon in the vampire costume Duffer had worn and Duffer in a black cloak, white mask, and holding a fake chef's knife, both of them carrying burlap sacks, it soon became clear that despite having been walking Terminus for several hours they were not likely to be getting candy. Yes, it was the time of the American holiday Halloween, or All Hallow's Eve, where children and adults alike would dress up and go around asking complete strangers for candy. So far the two had managed to obtain a sandwich and some chicken nuggets from the family of Burgermon. As they had the door to a house slammed in their faces by an Angemon and his wife, unhappy they were torn away from their together time by two stupid children, a thought entered Kotemon's mind.
"Duffer." The Digimon said, adjusting the black wig placed atop its helmet. "Yes, Kotemon?" Duffer asked, reaching into the bag and taking out some nuggets to enjoy. "I've been thinking, hefting this heavy costume around the large city in the middle of the night." "You have? Well, you were always good at doing that." "Someone has to, but regardless. I've been wondering: Why?" "Why what?" "Why are we dressed in heavy costumes late at night?" "Because it's Halloween, Kotemon!" "I understand that it is October 31st, Duffer, but I don't understand why we are dressed in the heavy costumes, in the dark, asking strangers for food in the middle of the night. I do not understand why you took away my sword and left us both defenseless, I do not understand why you are suddenly tenacious enough to try this when you are normally terrified of being alone in the Digital World, terrified of Nightfall, and just plumb terrified."
Duffer smiled and pulled up his mask to actually show his face. "Because Kotemon, Halloween isn't just a holiday. It's a whole new event, every single year. It's a way to show the world what you are deep inside, it's a way to become the costume and be whomever you wished to be. It's a night of wonders and fears and amazement, where anything can happen. Just you wait, Kotemon." Duffer said, putting the mask back on as the two walked past the entrance from the human world. "Something will happen and when it does, WE'LL be the only ones to reap the shower of candied decadence... literally!"

It was a dark and spooky night in the city, and our two intrepid adventurers had found themselves in the darkest and spookiest part, a random run-down alleyway. Hideki stared at Troopmon in a stupor as the rookie-level digimon dug through garbage cans in search of.. something. He had been at it all day, gathering various odds and ends from all over Terminus City. None of them resembled food in a traditional sense, but the tamer had once seen the digimon eat an entire pizza box so he wasn't one to make judgement easily.
"You know if you wanted something to eat, there are better ways dude," the boy explained to his dull-witted comrade, but when the mutant rookie had it small mind set on something, that was that. "Um.. I'm sure that if you wanted to eat something, that hat and scarf would be more than enough.. wait, do the clothes taste different here too?"
The Tanaka boy’s mind drifted back to when they first arrived in the digital world.. Chikurimon, or Troopmon as it had recently become, had given him what appeared to be an apple which upon biting, tasted like a sirloin steak. That was the best apple he'd ever eaten. Suddenly he was snapped back to reality with a sudden thump as a bundle of clothes smacked him across his azure noggin. It appeared to be a huge white hat, a red bandana, and a very large duster coat.
“Ţ̨Ą̢͜҉ ̶̀D̵͝҉͠A͜͞H̷́͘͝!̧̢͟͞ ̴͘͠ ̨͏̨Ý̢͜͟͝ó̡͟ù̡͞'͘͢͡r̢̛͢͞e̡̨̛͜ ̨͏͏̕a͏͝ ̵̨͢͝C̵̶̨̀͏Ơ̢͜͢W̸̡B̴̶̢Ơ̡͡Y̧̨͘!̴̸͡” The creature’s barely intelligible speech managed to form a sentence through its thick muffling and odd static-like interference. There was no fixing it, he was afraid. Hideki had tried adjusting its ear-horns, making it hold its tail aloft while it spoke.. nothing.
"I'm a cowboy? Why on Earth would I be a- OH CRAP IT'S HALLOWEEN. Wait, if I'm a cowboy then what are you going to be?"
Before Hideki's words were fully out of his mouth, the Troopmon reached into a trash can, retrieving the long red scarf, green vest, a pair of white gloves and a matching pair of boots. "No fair! I want to be Kamen Rider! Here, let's trade." Before long, the two were satisfied, a Cowmen Rider and a Kamboy emerged from the alleyway bearing twin empty paint pails in search of candy.

Kotemon was about to say something along the lines of "what makes you think they'd give us candy for a made up holiday" or "where did you learn the words decadence and literally" before Duffer pointed something out. "Look! Trick or Treaters! I told you Halloween was a real thing, Kotemon." The mon, however, remained skeptical as it watched the two emerge from an alley. "Why aren't they dressed as something "Scary" then, Duffer?" "Well, you don't NEED to be scary... It's just better if you are... Hey, they got candy pails! That means someone HAS to be giving out candy." "I dunno, I'm marginally impressed we were able to salvage a sandwich out of this fiasco, how do you know they'll be as successful as we are?" "We'll go WITH them! People always give more candy to bigger groups, Kotemon. It's called "the handful principle."
"You made that up." The mon accused as the two of them began walking towards them. "No, no, listen. Whenever there's a bowl of candy and a group of trick-or-treaters, they're more likely to let the bowl down and let the kids gather a handful of candy to save time and efforts." "Kids? Duffer, you're fourteen. You're a teenager for gods' sake. Two more years and you'll be able to drive." "Yes but YOU look like a child. I can go trick or treating year after year because you look like a kid and nobody will be any the wiser... But anyway, let's greet those guys before we start looking like complete wierdos who talk to themselves."
Kotemon sighed as they finally approached and noticed something. "Duffer?" "Yes Kotemon?" "This human is far shorter than you." "So?" "So why are we approaching small children in the middle of the night dressed in face-obscuring gear?" "You're worrying yourself, Kotemon. Let's just introduce ourselves and tell them we want to Trick or Treat with them." Sighing, the mon approached closer.
"Excuse me! Me and my tamer wish to speak with you." Kotemon tried to sound non-threatening.

“Eh? OH hey Troopmon, more Trick-or-Treaters, and they’re the only ones with costumes as bad as ours! No offense, but these guys around here can really get into Halloween or what?” Hideki smiled from under his oversized hat before his eyebrows wrinkled in confusion. “Wait.. aren’t you a little tall for a kid?”
“T̸̀R̕͜͝Í̵̧C͜͢͝Ḱ̨̢̢͏ ͏̨҉͟͢O̕Ŕ̡̨͠ ̨̨̀͢͡Ţ̸̴͡R̸̛͞É̢͟A͏̕T̕͟ ̸̴͘S̶̀M̴̨͘E̢̧̨̧̡Ĺ͠L҉̶̨ ̶͜I̢͢҉̴T̴S̢̕͢ ̶̴͡F̨̡͞O̕͢͝O̸͏T̴̨̢́͞ ̛́͢G̵̀͜I̶̢V̶͡Ę͏ ̧̕I̴͢͞Ţ̷̶̧̕ ̡S͜͝͝͏̢O҉͢͡Ḿ̧̨͟͠Ę̵̴T̨͠H̸̸̡̧̢I̸̧҉N̶̨̨͜G̷̢̛ ͞G̶͝Ó̸͞O̵̸͟D̷̀͜͢ ̴̛́͠T͏O̸͢ ̴͘͟͠F̨̀O̷̶̧O͡͡D͠͠!͏̵̴̨ ̨̀͜͝͡” The Troopmon loudly muffled oxymoronically as it held out its paint-encrusted bucket to the new arrivals. Its long, cat-like tail was waving in happiness as it looked from them to the bucket.. back to them.. then back to the pail. À̛͞͠͡w̸̶h̸́.͏̢.̴͜ ̶́Ņ͟͞͏O͞͝ ̷̕͘͏C̸̢̧A͟҉̕̕N̸̵͢D̷̢͞Y̷͝͝͡?̧́͘͠?̵͠҉̡?͞͠҉͡
The creature looked mortified from under its bandana-clad mask and bright green vest. Hideki had recieved the duster, white gloves, and the scarf. Neither looked like anything in particular, unless you count fashionista banditos as an acceptable Halloween costume.
“No buddy, you don’t ask other trick-or-treaters for candy.. you ask the grown-ups. THEY have the candy.. So vampire dude, have you gotten any good houses yet? We just started so we're not exactly sure where to hit first." His grin had returned twofold, big ol' teeth in a big ol' mouth. Hideki was smiling with the blissful unawareness that only the young or truly ignorant could muster. "Wait, did you say tamer? Oh! You're like us then. Awesome! I'm Hideki, this is Troopmon. What's your name?"

Duffer smiled. "See Kotemon, they're just like us. They even speak the same language! ...I think." Duffer said, looking at Troopmon confused. "Right, I'm Duffer." The boy took off his mask and smiled, offering a gloved hand to shake. "This is Kotemon, he... she... it's my best friend. We're out Trick or Treating, as you might've guessed... but no, we haven't found any good houses. Apparently the Digital World doesn't celebrate Halloween as I've found... but there's going to be candy! I just know it! There has to be candy if there's other Trick or Treaters, right Kotemon?" The boy frowned at the tall remark. "I just had a lot of growth spurts is all..." Duffer looked away and started mumbling a few things about himself, but thankfully Kotemon began talking before Duffer could say anything to scare them off.
"I'm Kotemon. This is Fredrick Duffy, but for some reason he insists upon being called Duffer. Your costumes and existances has at least convinced me that some of what Duffer's remarks about this holiday are correct. Duffer and I want to join you so we can "share the load" so to speak. Whether this mythical trove of candy exists or not, I would feel much safer doing this exercise in a group." The Digimon also offered a hand. "Sadly, no, we have found nothing. One house gave us a sandwich and a family of Burgermon gave us some chicken nuggets, but that's about it... Is something the matter with your...?" Kotemon reached into Duffer's pocket and stole the digivice, pointing it at Troopermon. "Troopermon. I want to ask you a few questions about your human while they do... whatever it is humans do."

“Yeah, totally. Wait.. I AM speaking English, right? I get mixed up sometimes." Hideki rubbed his head in embarrassment as he continued. "I’m originally from the States, but we moved over here a while back. I can speak Japanese though if you’d prefer. But anyway, nice to meetcha' Duffer and.. Coatimon, is it? I think it's alright for digimon to be hard to.. how should I put it? Genderized? Yeah, that sounds about right.. I understand the hardness in genderizing. I’m pretty sure Troopmon over here is a vaguely people-shaped (and kind of cat shaped) garbage disposal…” He was right, though. The anthropomorphic pseudo-feline was less of a solid object and more of a.. Capri-Sun pouch with legs? A sentient data receptacle. A snack to big spooky 'mons looking for a meal with a bit of a fight in it. In other words, a Myotismon's best friend.
“I don’t know about candy.. we kind of just started. If these people have costumes like this though, we’ve really gotta up our game if we want any of the good stuff,” the boy said, motioning to a short, bulb-headed robot walking hand-in-hand with some kind of ogre. “Man.. I wish my older brother had a costume that cool! That’s a really lucky kid. Wait..where did you say we were? The Digital World? We’re in the digital world? How in the heck did the Shibuya river connect to another world.. TROOPMON!" the boy looked for his taller, superhero/bandito compadre. "Why didn’t you tell me where we were? That explains my crappy cell service.. and even worse that they don’t celebrate Halloween!” Japan was an odd place, but it had nothing on this other world. Meat-flavored apples, secondhand cowboy gear, and no Halloween? No wonder these guys want to come to our world so badly.
"i̢T̨̕'̢̀͠S̷͢ ̛͢S̷̡Ò̵̷R͝R̵Y̢͞ ̨́H͟i̴̛D̸̴ÉK̶͘͝i.̷͝͠ į̶T̸̛͟ ͢W̢A͢͠S̀͝ ̵̀̀È̶̵X͟͞Ci̸TE͜D ͘͟F͘O͡R̡ ̢Ṕ̢R͜E̶-W͝i͢N͘T͜Ȩ̕R̴̶҉ ̵̛H̛U̧̕͜MA̛N͢ ̴̛́C͜͠A̸͡͠N͝DY̕-̶͏E̷͢AT̷͢IN҉͜G̴̷̕-̕D̷͞AY.͞ ҉ ҉͘i͝T̷͝ ͟҉i̴S ͠T̡̛H̶́͟IS ͘O҉Ņ̷̶E̴'̵͘S̨ F̶҉̢a̛͘͞VO̡Ri̶T͢͞͡È ̷́H̴̨̕Ó̶Ĺ̛i̛͜DA̢Y̷̡.͜" The digimon's head hung low as it looked oddly defl ated by the comment. That's not a figure of speech, it actually looked like it was sagging from lack of internal pressure like some kind of under-filled water balloon. "i͘͞T iŞ VER̷̵̕Y̶͜ ̶̢̀P̢͢L͢E̵͢A̶̸S͜E̴D̀̕͟ T̴̢͝O͏͡ M̡͢E̡͠E҉T ̕ÝO̵̡Ú̵̢ T͠HE҉͢͏ ͜òf ̡K̕O̶͞T̶̨̢EM̛O̴̶N͟ ̷H̛O̧̕W̢ ̢́͜C̕͡A͝͞N̴̸ į̴T̷ ̶̢̕B̢͜E̷̛ WIT̶̷́H̕ ̡͠T̴͜͡H̢͘E͘͢ ̧͘͢H̨͢EL̛P̧̡i̴̷N̷͝G̶͝?͘͢"
"Wait, can you understand Troopmon? Even I can't do that.. I just kind of nod and go along with whatever it says. You said chicken nuggets, right? Mind showing me where that place was while these guys talk about diodes or something, Duffer? I'm freaking starving and where I come from, free chicken nuggets are a pretty good deal!"

"The states? So am I!" Duffer said, astounded. "I'm from Minnesota, you?" The mention of not celebrating Halloween Duffer frowned. "Bad news, they don't celebrate it in Japan either... and that was a Datamon and Ogremon... are you new to this whole... thing?" Duffer asked before the mention of the Shibuya river showed up. "Ech, you went in there? Isn't there toxic waste and crap in there? Me and Kotemon just take the trains. That way I don't have to worry about becoming a horrible mutated freak." Duffer stared at Troopmon, confused. "I can't, sorry. Kotemon's the expert here. Unless we're jumped by a horrible monster I'm not much use." The boy put his mask on again. "Right, I think it was over here..." Duffer began leading the way.
Kotemon, meanwhile, sighed as it joined up with Troopmon. "It's KOTEmon. While we're together I will keep the lot of you from harming yourselves, each-other, and out of danger." Kotemon pat Troopmon's back, trying to cheer it up. "Relax, these two got your hopes up a little. You've probably not been with humans for that long to realize how much they think of themselves. As their superiors, we have to make them better." Kotemon began. "Of course I can understand Troopmon. It just has a bit of a grammar problem, you two need to stop over-reacting." The mon turned its attention back to Troopmon as Duffer lead them to the Burgermon's restaurant stand. "Now, this may be a lot to unload upon you, but these humans are our responsibility. We have to keep them safe and make them better. Does your human have any problems? Is he lazy and do nothing but watch television all day like mine?"

"I'm from Florida. Dad got a new job at a big company and we all moved with him. But that's life, amirite? What about you? What brings you to the Japan? Er.. I guess I mean the Digital World."
"Yeah, I noticed.. I've been around Japan for a while now, but to be honest I really forgot about it until Troopmon reminded me-" Wait what... "Those were digimon too? Wow... Datamon and Ogremon. Got it! I didn't know digimon got as big as that green guy.. it's kind of scary." The boy looked around noticing the other creatures, which went from people in costumes to monsters walking all around him.. COOL! "Who knew they came in so many shapes? That makes a robot, an opera singer, a leafy dinosaur, a scary literally lady, Kotemon and.. well, Troopmon. We're a little new at this, considering we just teamed up a little under a week ago, and I didn't even know what a digimon was until about three or four days ago."
"Yeah.. well, it wasn't up to me. It really stank.. wait, there's a train? I know how I'm getting back now. That place sucked. I didn't grow any tentacles or meet any subterranean mole-people unless.. do you think digimon count as mole people? Is there a Molepersonmon I need to meet?" Hideki's easily excited side surfaced once more like the theoretical mole-man. With is mish-matched costume over his strange digital-world clothes, a tinfoil hat wouldn't be too far off from the ensemble.
"iS̵ ̷̧͡WH̶̷a̢T ̵͞i͡ ̀S̶̀A̧̛i̢̛͘D͏,͜ ̵̛K͏̕oT̵̴E̢̢Mó̴N͡.͠ ̛͞Ba̛͘Ḑ H̡įD̵E̸̶͞K͝ì ̧́͜Y̵͢ ҉̡U̸͝ ҉̷N̡ơ҉̴ ̛̀Ş̵͝à͞Y҉ ̴̵N̡a̸M͠͡E̢ ̧R̸iGH̡̀TS̶̛!" The Troopmon would look grumpy if its plain white mask and expressionless goggles could properly emote. There was an edge to its.. noises.. as it spoke. Then again, that noise may have been excitement. "A grammar problem? Well.. I can't bring him to school with me.. is there a remedial school for digimon somewhere around here?"
"Yà͜Y͘ ̧̕S̡̕͜a̷̸FT̷E͞Y̛ ̵̨ F͢R̵i̷̡ę̷ND͡!̛ ̡͝ ̨̨̡W͏̶͘e̸ ͜͡S̸͜a̸FE̡ ͜N̡̕ó͏W̧̨͏ ͘Hi̸͝DeK̸̶i,̡̀ ́̀͡LǪ̶ ͡҉FoR̸̀T̸ ̕͡w̶̧E̢͝ ͘H̶at̛͟h҉̧ ́K͘̕oŢE͠͏M͠O͡͝N!́"̀ The digimon hopped around excitedly around its new friend, bounding like a happy child with a new toy. In its enjoyment, it completely failed to realize that the children had left. Upon being asked about his tamer's "problems", Troopmon shook it's head-shape violently. Duffer smiled as he let Hideki trick or treat the stand, the obvious result being a sandwich for Troopmon and the chicken nuggets for Hideki. "Well, I'm a foreign exchange student. I got so good at baseball that my teachers suggested I try doing it here where they love it apparently. When I got here I found an egg sitting in front of the computer and freaked out. After a long night it hatched, I met Kotemon, we learned to respect each-other and now we're best friends. They usually prefer it when you call them by what they are. Don't you have a digivice? If you point it at 'em it'll tell you what they are." Duffer nodded. "Yep, there's a secret platform at the Shibuya station that you can enter using your digivice... how come the construction workers never noticed it was there?" Duffer asked himself. "No, I don't think so... if there is I haven't met 'em."
Kotemon shook its head. "Remedial, no. There's a schoolhouse somewhere but it doesn't have regular classes like your human schools do..." Kotemon stepped back as Troopmon bounced around happily, sighing. "We'll have a lot to work on... Savior of the universe, is he? And he's afraid of women? Not even DUFFER'S afraid of women, and he watches horror films all the time."

Hideki ate his chicken nuggets while the boys spoke. "That's awesome! I wish I was good at something like that.. Baseball, I never would have thought about that. Then again, I've never really been one for sports anyway. Bad stamina, bruises easily, easily distracte-" Oooh, these nuggets are pretty good. Now if only we had some candy. "Yeah, my meeting with Troopmon was.. similarish. I found it in the kitchen and assumed it was a killer alien here to eat my food. We ended up working things out, but I was kind-of right on everything except the killer part."
"Hm. So I should just call it Troopmon? That makes sense." Pronouns were difficult for the boy anyway, and it seemed rude to just keep referring to his friend as 'it', so he took the other boy's advice to heart. A partnership is supposed to be built on trust and mutual respect, after all. Well, that and the occasional rivalry with a similar-yet-evil rival.. and explosions, and super powers. I really need to watch less TV. "A secret platform? So.. the Digital World is kind of like Hogwarts? That's cool.. I don't know if I can pay the fare though." When he had left his house, the boy had been wearing a completely different outfit, his favorite pair of pajamas. The thing he actually had with him when he arrived was his digivice, so paying for really anything was going to be an issue.
"So.. I guess I'm gonna have to find some kind of way to understand you, bud." The boy turned to his digimon friend with a sigh. "Considering you can't go to grammar school here, maybe we can work on that together! You know. Bonding stuff."
"Y̢̡ą̀Y̡̛ ̢Ẃo̡̕R̷K̨̛͟!̶̢ ̷̴͞T̶H̢iS ͟o͜͡N͟E͝ ̀͘L̸̨̛i̷K̵̶èS̷̀ W͘ó҉RK! ̡̀͠ ̵W̶̨҉Ai̢̕T.̵.̵ ̵҉Ņo.̡̧ ͟W̕ơ̶͠Ŕ͠͠K͢͝ ̷̀įŞ͡ T̀H̴ę̷́ ̡̀P̨͠áR̨T W͠͡H̸͞eŖe͟͡ ͏̶S̶͘i҉͠T̕ ͞͝a̢R̵͟o͞U̡Ņ̧͞D̸ aND̢͟ ̶D̴o̢ ͢N̡͟ǫ̵T̸̢H҉͡͝i̴̡N̸͟G̢̕?̕" Troopmon failed to grasp the concept of working.. it abided by Kenichi's version of the word, where it roughly translated into 'stare at books for a while, get smart, sleep a lot' in the creature's language.
"Wait, he called me a what? Also, WHAT? Why would you say that to them, Troopmon? You've betrayed my confidence! I'm at a sensitive age, okay? Girls are scary." Rubbing his head sheepishly, the boy attempted to explain. "I mean. Mom's are scary and moms are girls. So that means that girls are scary! Right?"

"Eh, I dunno if they count as aliens... I mean they're from some weird alternate reality... that now we're in. Does that mean we're aliens when we're here or does that mean We're just weird to these digimon? Ugh... I hate existentialism..." Duffer looked curious. "What did you call it beforehand?" Duffer looked confused at the mention of Hogwarts, scratching his head. "...What do pigs have to do with anything? ...And they usually like to be paid with food." The boy reassured. Duffer laughed. "Girls dude? You're afraid of girls? I mean, yeah, some of them can be intimidating but to actually be afraid of them?" Duffer was about to laugh before the explanation came up. "Oh, you're just afraid of your mom. Yeah, moms can be pretty freaky..." Duffer said, remembering a certain man named Norman Bates.
Kotemon rolled its eyes. "I don't get baseball. You hit a ball and run, big whoop. He should be in fencing or judo, not something silly as baseball." Kotemon frowned. "My first encounter with Duffer involved him tossing me across the room and trying to kill me. Thankfully his foreign exchange caretakers were able to distract him until I could sneak into his bag... then he panicked when we got to his school. He was not the ideal caretaker." Kotemon glared at Duffer. "...And you can call them what you wish, some tamers prefer to give them names." Kotemon ignored the Hogwarts comment, not getting the reference either. Shaking its head Kotemon began explaining the concept of "work". "Working is when you put effort into something... so it's the opposite of sitting around and doing nothing." Kotemon ignored the girls comment. "Is there anything you do not like about your partner?"

Hideki sat there for a moment just listening to Duffer contemplate their place in the universe. "Dude.. you just blew my mind a little. I just called it what my digivice said to.. I didn't figure it was my place to name it, considering it's a.. I was going to say person like you or me, but that's not really accurate. But you know what I mean, right?"
"I'm not afraid.." the boy's face was a deep crimson, matching his large red scarf. "It's not like I cry or pee my pants or anything. I just kind of choke around them, you know? I don't know why, but I get really nervous and act really dumb around them. When I act dumb, they don't like me and that scares me, so I just kind of don't like talking to them because I'm just going to mess everything up." Hideki dug a hole in the dirt with his right cowboy boot, staring at the ground as he spoke more to himself than anything. "I'm not even really afraid of Mom as like.. a person or anything. She's just way more strict than Dad and is mean to me when I mess up."
The other group's first encounter didn't seem awfully dissimilar to Hideki and Troopmon's, though the two weren't likely to admit it. As Kotemon continued talking about its tamer's failures, Hideki couldn't help but feel a kindred spirit. After all, he hadn't been a great role model either.. nor had he really taken good care of this creature that was now his responsibility. "No wonder mom wouldn't let me have a dog.." he spoke quietly to himself. "So, Troopmon? Do you want a name? I mean.. do you have any ideas? It's completely up to you."
"i̴'͘͜͜M̢̕͢ ̴C̴͟aP̧͘TA̵i͢Ń ̷̶̴B͏̢O̕S̛C̀͡Ḩ ͢Vo͏N҉͞ ͜R̷͜o̷N̢Ş̀͝EN͏Be͜͝Ŕ̵Ģ̀ ̵o͞F̷ ͜D҉a̷L̴̴͠M̸̴a͘SC̀͏̧a̵̸͜!̢͠" the digimon posed with both hands on its rubbery hips and stuck out its chest dramatically, as if some kind of mythical hero. Or someone from a video game.
"I have got to get you some better games to play.. let's just save this one for later, okay?"
"Wo̧͏̛R͜͞K ́͘S̷o͢U̕͠N̴̢͠DS̶ ͢H̢͟a̧R̸̨̨D̛͝. "Ḩ̸ìD̴̕͠e҉͠Kì́ ̨͢͢W̴̨͝i͘L̵͜L̶ ͏W̴͞o̵̡̕R̡̀K̴̛.͜ ͟M̴̵e̢͡ ̢W͡iL̵͞͡L̸ ̷W̶̢aTC͘H̶͝ ̧̀͢a̢͟N҉̡̀D ̧̧Le̷͢A҉R̶N̛ ͞͝F̨̧R͡o҉̸͠M̵̴͏ ̵Ko̵T̀E̶̛̛Ḿ͞oN̨̨!̷̕
"Is it my turn to voice complaints yet, Kotemon?" The tamer looked exasperated at his lazy companion. "If I'm working, you're working too! Don't be like Kenichi. Heroes work hard and fight harder. Isn't that right guys?"

Duffer nodded. "Yeah... I dunno what Kotemon is so I can't give it a proper name either... it doesn't help that it refuses to tell me..." Duffer laughed and pat Hideki on the back. "I know that feeling, apparently I just act dumb in general... Not doing any favors for my self-esteem though. Anyway, moms are people too. Have you tried just talking to her about how she treats you when she's angry... you know, when she isn't angry? Or to your dad? I mean, sure they probably won't do anything about it considering how we've got walking talking monsters but at least you'll try." Duffer smiled as he had managed to pull something resembling decent advice from his mind. "It's not like we're trying to tell them about the alternate world in the river, right?"
Kotemon frowned at the name suggested. "I'm sorry, you're not coming in clearly." It bluffed. Shaking its head, the mon sighed. "Troopmon, there will come a day where I will not be present to watch Hideki for you. And during that time he will probably be in danger. You will need to work to be able to defend your partner, just as he will be ready to defend you. Me and Duffer may not look like it, but we care about each-other, and you two need to learn to do this as well. Now... you two were discussing something about candy? Do either of you wish to continue that pursuit or just go home?"

"I don't know.. I'm kind of hiding the fact that, you know.. digimon. But it's probably going to be a lot harder now that he doesn't fit in my lunch bag.." The days of smuggling Chikurimon into school appeared to be over now that the thing had grown. Maybe he can get his own burritos now.. I mean, people are crazy about cosplay in Japan! A nice box behind a Taco Hut or something and he'll be set for life. "Yeah, if I mentioned that, I'd probably be institutionalized. I mean, this isn't New York."
The digimon placed one of its suction-cupped phalanges on its chin-part of its face as it thought of another suitable name. Suddenly, a gasplike noise was emitted from the creature's face-vents.
"Va̶͘̕Ĺ̀e̢͠Ņ̴̕T̵̡i̷̸N̶͞Ȩ̵͢Z A̵̢͘Ļ̨̛K̸͘a̴̧Ĺ̵͢i̛͟Ne͜L̸͘͢L͡a͏ X̵͏í̢̛F̵̷̡aX̡͏ ͘͜S̀iCiD̶̶͝a͏B̀o҉̨H̡eŔ͢͠T͘͏Z͝ ͡G̷͜͡o̷͝M҉̀͢B̡͠iG̡̧o͡B̶͢͝i̡͝L̵͞͏L̀́a̵̧ ̶͝B̡͞L̕u͜E̢͟ Ş͢TR̴̴a̕D̀iV̕a̢̢Ri̡̕-́-̷̸͘-̨́" the digimon began to reiterate before it was interrupted by Hideki. Loudly. "WAIT A SECOND THERE."
The heroic halfwits shared an incredulous aside glance before zeroing in on Kotemon. "You're not actually implying that we DON'T get candy, are you?" There was a hint of murder in their eyes. "Troopmon gets grumpy if it doesn't get its peanut butter cups." The steely demeanor in the boy's face faltered for a moment as he spoke, then he started snickering. "I was promised candy, and if I have to walk every inch of this World to find it, I will not break my promise!"

Daniel had become increasingly aware of the passage of time, that was to say he was becoming increasingly aware of how old he had become. It seemed like just yesterday he was the thirteen year old kid who had just stumbled across his partner for the first time, and was instantly attached to it. If only because he viewed the small red monster as a way to fill the vow left in his chest, but now? Now things were different. He was older now, three years older to be exact. While he had indeed changed greatly in the last three years, becoming more mature, more level headed, and far more sure of himself than he had once been. A lot of stuff hadn't changed. He still felt as though he needed to be a hero, that he needed to save the worlds whenever danger crept its head up from the darkness. He still felt the empty space within his heart, that the death of his mother left...but its present was far less than it had been in days of old.
He sighed heavily as he moved through the streets of Terminus City, his partner the red lizard named Guilmon trailing along behind him. While Daniel wandered around the halloween themed streets lost in his thoughts, Guilmon examined the area. The duo had never been in Terminus City during the time Halloween was present. They had always been so busy in the human world that going into the Digital World never popped up, but with Daniel being older he could no longer prowl the streets dressed up to ask for candy. Something that Guilmon always found confusing, why would humans just give away something as tasty as candy? In all the time he had spent with Daniel he had never figured that out. He supposed it didn't matter though, free candy was free candy. He was sad he'd be missing out on it.
Neither Daniel nor Guilmon were dressed up for their night time stroll through the city, mostly because Daniel didn't see much of a point to it. Sure deep down he was still the little kid from his youth, but he did need to have some grown up tendency. So why not start with not dressing up for Halloween? Man being an adult was going to be so boring, and he was only two years away from it! He let another sigh escape from his lips as he looked up towards the darkened digital sky, at least he got to enjoy things like this more often.
Daniel was pulled from his thoughts as he walked by a couple of kids who had to be at least two or three years younger than him. The younger of the shouting about how he swore he'd get some candy even if he had adventure all throughout the Digital World, and Daniel chuckled. "Such passion! I like it!" he spoke as he approached the two of them, his hands traveling to the inside of his jacket pockets. There was a smile on his face as he looked at the two of them, "Though I wouldn't go EVERYWHERE, some of the places here can be pretty dangerous." it was the truth, Daniel knew from experience.
"I know a good place to start though. I heard a couple of Impmon talking about a haunted house nearby that was giving out some candy for anyone brave enough to make it all the way through, why don't you give that place a try?" he removed a hand from his pocket and pointed it towards the direction the haunted house was located at, "Just keep heading east along the road and you'll find it."
Guilmon tugged at Daniel's jacket, "We should go with them. I don't think you've ever taken me to one of these haunted houses before." spoke the large red lizard.
Daniel blinked, had he really never taken Guilmon to a haunted house before? That was just strange, then again...he didn't remember there being many of them in Japan. "If you really want to Guilmon? It's really up to them I guess, assuming they even end up going." the duo began to get lost in their own conversation. Perhaps someone should pull them out of it huh?
