And so, after the arcade, Koharu and Mana goes back to a small cafe with very homey vibe. Koharu strangely ordered something light this time. The black haired girl pulled a chair on the farthermost corner of the cafe, where seem they can gain some privacy. Koharu sighed as she turned back Commandramon into Missimon. The in-training proceeds to have her well deserved nap after evolving.
"...Alright, well, where to start? I don't have any photo of the girl with me currently, but... her name is Minato Natsuki... Karin is right on several stuffs, and she's Ryouta's first love... only that like I said, he noticed too late... The girl is anything but girly, I suppose... other than her long hair, she's really nothing girly. Heck, you even got more girly side than her! But... we're being off topic here... Minato Natsuki, or Nattchan for short... is my kouhai in karate club like I told you. She's a strong girl, even stronger than me, her sempai back then, but I guess, that's because I'm never so serious in match and ended up getting myself beaten... hehe... Still, it was a bit after incident with that guy... Ryouta forced to move from Nerima. At the same time, I myself have to move thanks to some family stuffs, nothing that bad, really."
She sighed again and sip her milkshake.
"...Mmm, and then, Ryouta having huge trouble to adjust with his new life. He sometimes skips meal because of the increasing economical problem and often got sick... it was too sudden, that's why. I shared my bento with him on many occasion, but more than many times, I don't have any for myself and back then, I doesn't really get any sort of allowance to spend on food for two, so as you know, he's so kind... and that is fatal because he would avoid me so I don't force him to eat my food..."
Koharu smiled sadly at those memories.
"...This is where Natsuki get into the picture. One day, Ryouta fell because of hunger... and Nattchan is the first one to found him. I guess. She brought him back to her house, and there's where their friendship bloomed. Nattchan is a karate lover, and back then, guess what? Ryouta's still so scrawny, and now if you look at him... he's really ripped, huh? I guess you can say that it's thanks to her... It's funny... instead of him that protects other, it's Nattchan that covered him when he got into fight because he cannot stand bullies... Well, let me just tell you now... it's not a happy tale, but are you fine with that?"

Mana had devolved Ayaka all the way up to Plumulmon, placing her gently in her hoodie's pocket as she followed Koharu with a downcast expression. Their new destiny was a café after their little adventure in the arcade. After Koharu, she ordered a tangerine smoothie, the drink she always had when she felt sad or depressed, and that someway always cheered her up.
She followed her up to her table, and she took some sips of her drink while Koharu talked about Natsuki, and how both she and Koharu tried to help out Ryouta during his rough times. She really felt badly for the boy, as she was somewhat pampered during all her childhood due to being her parent's favorite sibling, but she knew how almost collapsing from hunger felt, and as she imagined Ryouta having to feel that same sensation every day, she couldn't but feel extremely sad for the boy.
"Poor Ryouta-san" she muttered. She'd have liked so much to be there for him and to help him in any way she could "He was lucky to have you two besides him" she paused for a second, considering Koharu's question. A probably result would be that she would be so moved by that history that she would strive to fill that girl's gap, but could she bear with that burden? Despite of that, she wanted to know the whole history, not caring about the consequences for now.
"Yes, please, Koharu-san" she nodded "I want to hear the whole story about Nat-chan".

"I know you'd say that," Koharu remarked, smiling sadly. "Whatever you do, though, remember that you're not Natsuki... no matter what, you cannot replace her... but, you can surpass her. The key here is to not put yourself in her image when in front of Ryouta... because, she's a special person for Ryouta... but if you become his girlfriend, then remember, you're much more special than that, so you don't have to strive to be like her... Ryouta wouldn't appreciate that, not the slightest."
Koharu sipped her drink again before searching for something. She took out a pencil and a start sketching something really fast before handing it to Mana. It's a picture of a girl aged 11, although anime-ish in style, with big round eyes that looks like she's a shining sun... Her expression is very cheerful, too. She let her hair flows naturally. The girl wears orange headband. Her clothes is a simple sleeveless yellow tank top with orange pants. She's definitely a summer child. Still, that girl looks more to boyish because of several bandaids on her face.
"Cute? Well, I cannot draw realistic stuffs, so... this have to do. This is that kouhai of mine... sorry, let me put it here..."
She put the paper on the other side of the table, where there's an empty chair near it.
"So... let's start, shall we? Natsuki is just as you see... she's very cheerful, always grinning and overall really bright. She's a bit to the airhead type at times, that type that is typical tomboy with really low aptitude in lessons... but when she crammed it all, she can just easily passed the tests. Because her frankness and her generally unreserved attitude, she's very popular with boys as best friends and girls as a great big brother... Basically? No one see her as a girl... beside Ryouta that be."
She chuckled and take several gulps of her drink.
"Basically... I'm saying, that bonehead for some unknown reason, treated that girl as a little sister despite she's obviously much stronger. If you ask Ryouta to have an armwrestling match with her, she'll definitely win no contest. But like I said, for some unknown reason, Ryouta treated her like a little sister, not a best guy friend. Of course, he did this without telling she's weak or she's simply a girl... but let's say, Ryouta cared her quite a great deal when he saw her fighting... He often told her to stay out of his fights, but she still butt in regardless... I guess for a while, Ryouta stopped fighting because he doesn't want to see Natsuki getting hurt because of him... Still, even without him doing that, Natsuki is the type that gets in lot of problem... she's even more justice bound than Ryouta due to various tokusatsu show. She trained herself to be the cast... she won't mind to be the suit actor if needed, but honestly, it's like her greatest dream."
Koharu turned to the window, watching many peoples walking around.
"...So... Here's the thing... um... Ryouta told Natsuki... Unless she wanted to be treated as a boy, then she's a girl. And because of she's a girl, she should take care of herself better... although he said, ultimately it's up to her. This apparently captured Natsuki's heart... crush start to bloom, but... well, Ryouta's super dense, right? When she asked him what type of girl he likes, he frankly answers 'The feminine, generally meek type with long hair and is weaker than me so I can protect her better.'"
Koharu chuckled at that. "Back then, Ryouta's... not like now. This Ryouta looks more to his old self from childhood... 10-11 years old Ryouta... he's very quiet and serious... Yet at the same time, he's still the kind Ryouta you know... he just show that kindness in different way. Either way... try to imagine how you would feel when your crush said that to you, someone exactly opposite with very serious face, no nonsense kind. Still.. Natsuki tried to be like that. A bit fast for 9 years old, I said, but... I guess, it's a beautiful childhood crush. Despite Ryouta doesn't like her change because it sounds so forced, he's impressed. Natsuki told him that she's doing it for her crush, and Ryouta doesn't get it, but... well, Natsuki take all his praise to the heart. The crush deepened... At valentine day... she confessed... and Ryouta... well... he rejected her gently... but... You know, rejection is rejection, right? But didn't I said that she's Ryouta's first crush? I did... now, the rest of the story is not pleasant... are you ready?"

Mana gave a small smile as she continued sipping her smothie when Koharu told her about what she shouldn't think herself as Natsuki's replacement, but as someone who could become better than her, and that Ryouta wouldn't like it if she tried to replace her in the slightest, because he appreciated her in a special way. She was about to say 'Why do you say that? Ryouta-san doesn't feel anything for me!' But Koharu showed her that drawing before she could do it. She had to admit, it was a bit anime-ish, but it looked cute nonetheless. She continued with her tale, describing Natsuki, and even if she had said it, she couldn't but compare herself to her. Both were cheerful, both were kinda boyish, but it all differed when she told her that everybody saw her as a big brother figure, and than most people considered her a boy, even if she was obviously a girl, at least in Mana's eyes, and in Ryouta's, apparently.
He treated her like a little sister, just like her, but the difference back there was that Ryouta as strong as he was now, and most likely Natsuki could have made him eat his words with her fists if she really wanted to. She heard of her dreams of being a toku or suit actress, and smiled a little at them. When she was little, she also wanted to be a toku actress. But what really surprised her was when Ryouta told Natsuki that unless she said that she wanted to be treated as a boy, she was a girl even though she was a boyish as they came. She sighed, looking at the girl as she looked at the window.
"Ryouta-san..." she muttered softly "He's a really sensible guy when he's not being the densest person in this planet, isn't he?".
She smiled for a bit, before she started to see how things would just go crumbling. Ryouta had said to her face that she liked just the opposite of what she was, but she seemed to be alright with it. And she had to be even more surprised when the girl told her about the seriousness her previous self had. So he had said to Natsuki in a no-nonsense tone that she liked the exact opposite of what she was? That could only spell a disaster. Yet, she began to build hope when Koharu told that she started changing, to become something alike what Ryouta wanted her to be, and how she complimented her, she geniunely hoped that they'd get together, but... he rejected her. To be frank, she didn't know how a Valentine's confession after having to work so hard to change could feel, even if it were with all the gentleness of the world, Mana would feel devastated, completely and utterly. She couldn't just bear with that, but... Koharu's words had hope. There was still a chance for them to get together, right?
"Yes, I'm ready" she said with her voice soaked with the feeling. She really felt bad for Natsuki, and even... she felt as if the girl was more deserving of Ryouta than she. But what had happened? "What happened afterwards?".

"I know you'd said that... but I just hope you won't beat yourself too much on it... Despite that rejection, Natsuki still cling to those feelings... she wanted to make Ryouta look at her... with all kind of efforts, all kind of things she did to be less masculine... I can sense Ryouta slowly changes, too. He's starting to accept her more and likes her... Although one day, he told her 'you're fine the way you are, because it made me home. Don't change'... Now that's the start of Natsuki getting her hope up again... but... Ryouta is really dense... He didn't thought that feeling inside his heart is a crush for the girl..."
However, Koharu's expression darkened significantly. She looks sad, really sad.
"...Fate is a cruel thing... One day, just like that, Natsuki collapsed in her training. She admitted she felt rather... odd, like really tired and exhausted... In front of Ryouta, she tried to do her best to remain strong. She refused to get diagnosed, I don't know why. I told her that it's stupid, but she still insist that she's fine. Of course, it got worse over time. When Ryouta asked why Natsuki is that headstrong, she told him her dream... dream of becoming a tokusatsu actress... I guess, that's the moment when Ryouta starting to change. His family economy got better, and he can eat better food... well, at that time, he start to do small training... Why? He told me and her, he'll fulfill that dream for her instead if she cannot. I guess that's when Ryouta becomes... a man?" she laughed at that, but her laugh sounds so devoid of mirth.
"...It was leukemia, apparently. I forgot the exact disease, but... it's a type of cancer. By this, you understand where this goes to, right?"

Mana kept listening to the tale, on how Natsuki did her best to be liked by Ryouta, and how she finally began to be noticed by her. She felt so happy for the two of them for that moment. Yet, it all went downhill when she heard what happened afterwards. The mysterious disease, and how she refused to do anything just to keep up with her dream... and how Ryouta, in a strange show of empathy, figured out what was wrong and promised her that he would make her dream live on, in spite of whatever happened to her. And thus, he became a 'man'.
But still... after her disease's name was uttered, Mana's eyes became teary on the spot. Her eyes transmitted to Koharu that she knew where this was heading, but that didn't make it any easier for for the brunette. She set apart her almost-finished drink for the time being as she closed her fists with frustration. Small and cristalline tears started to descend from her face into the table. Yeah, Koharu was right; fate is indeed a cruel mistress.
"You know, I'd really liked to know Nat-chan. I'm pretty sure that we could have been pretty good friends" she simply said between tears. Why life had to be so unfair? She didn't know her, but such a good girl suffering that fate when things were just starting to look brighter for her was just brutal.
And so, she just stood there, silently mourning a girl she hadn't met in her life, but she would have liked to.

"I'm sure she want that, too... She wanted love rival, she wanted to have best friend who is her love rival, she wanted to enjoy bantering playfully with that rival... all in all, she wanted that kind of spice in life... not exactly the total opposition... Rivals, but at the same time, best friends, no hard feelings whoever got Ryouta... And she definitely would pull you back if you dared to back off from the competition like you did to Karin..." she chuckled, but once again, she sounded more to sad than happy.
"...Natsuki died seventh day after her birthday... It was three days ago or so, I believe. So the story is... Natsuki doesn't want to die without a meaning. She gave up on karate as whole and start to try dressing herself true to her gender. She's starting to become feminine... Cooking, ironing, washing... it doesn't take her long before she mastered those... But she become easily tired that sometimes Ryouta have to gave her a piggyback... In such short time, their role reversed... and so, in her sickness, Natsuki gained a lot of admirers... boys mostly... Ironic, right? No one looks at her when she's healthy, and when she's miserable..."
Koharu bit her lips as tears, too, fell from her eyes to the table.
"...Natsuki... she wanted to have a romance life before she died... so she... she tried her best to make Ryouta loves her... She tried her hardest, yet Ryouta doesn't seem to share the same sentiment. No... it's more like Ryouta is oblivious to his own feeling. He grows distressed, not knowing what exactly that feeling toward Nattchan... And so, Nattchan despaired, and in her despair, she turned to other boy, someone which understand her, but rather than a lover, it sounds like a big brother."
Koharu tried to smile once again, but it's no use... because the story is about to reach the climax.
"Nattchan... despaired even more. She doesn't want a love like that, and in her desperation, she begged Ryouta one thing..."
"I'm going to undergo a surgery somewhere far... Please, Ryou... just for this once, please, date me. I want to brave myself. I think, if you dated me at least this one last time, I can brace it easier. Before you know it, I'm sure I'll be back, stronger than ever."

Mana smiled sadly at Koharu's answer. She would have loved to meet Natsuki indeed. This tale was just too much for her, yet, out of respect for the girl, she heard the rest of her history. She actually admired the girl; even if she knew that she was about to die, she did her best to make Ryouta notice her and couldn't help but to compare herself to her; she had changed during her life, but not because the love, or rather, not because the romantic kind of love. She had changed because she wanted to make her parents proud, to make Yuu not to hate her and to help him go through his crash accident.
They weren't changes as violent as Natsuki's, yet they were little small changes that started to pile up; she had to act etiquette classes to behave in front of adults and in tea ceremonies and a lot of feminine activities. Even if she was rather bad at it, if she did it with enough determination, she could sew with well enough, even if her fingers ended up like those funny cheeses because the amount of times she had punctured her fingers. But her parents were so proud of her when she showed them her first embroidery. Their approval and happiness was definitely worth all the things she had gone through and much, much more. Maybe Natsuki felt the same about Ryouta?
As the table began to be sprinkled by the tears of the two girls, she knew that the conclusion was coming close. A last-ditch, desperation attempt for one last date with Ryouta before she went away. Her tears started to flow even more freely from her eyes. She would have liked to slap the sense unto young Ryouta's brain so much. Why couldn't he just see?!
"Tell me that he accepted. Please, Koharu-san. I don't think I can hear the rest of the tale if he didn't".

"He accepted... out of pity, I believe. Nattchan is a bit on the weak side that day, but... well, Ryouta did his part. It's not halfassed at all... I think, it's even very sincere. Despite if it's really out of pity, he want her to have the best memory. He even tries to brave his most hated haunted house, just for her because Natsuki loves the thrill. They had fun in amusement park, to aquarium... but stopped before they could go to the beach.... Natsuki collapsed. That's her birthday that day... So, the two spent the rest of the day together in hospital room. For Natsuki, it was the happiest day ever, but at the same time, the saddest day... I guess that applies to Ryouta, too. Natsuki... confessed once more, and this time, she managed to make Ryouta doubt his feeling to her... she's no longer a little sister... she's a girl... a girl that he loved with all his heart."
Koharu tried to wipe her tears to no avail.
"...Ryouta... Ryouta told me... how he loved her... how he really wished he can return... he stayed oblivious to her disease... but Nattchan told me to not tell him ANYTHING... And so, the next day, before Ryouta could confess back... Nattchan faked her transfer and emptied her room. Despite so, Ryouta tries to be positive... he believed she'll return one day... And... needless to say, I'm the only one who saw her sorry state afterward... It's... terrifying, Mana... really terrifying... but even to the end, Nattchan smiled... on the third day... in autumn... she passed away. Her wishes to Ryouta... well, I still hold it over here... I don't know why, but it's starting to be like a charm to me."
She handed the letter to her.
To beloved Ryou... I know this is sudden... maybe you won't like to read this letter, but... let's say, I'll be far away... I don't know if I can return right in time, so... let me just say this... I heard from Koharu-sempai that you used to be very cheerful... that's why, I'd love you to be as cheerful as you do back in the past... Ryou, keep smiling, keep smiling like the shining sun you are... I know it'll be hard, but... you know? When you grinned so easygoing-ly, it's like all my worries fades away... second... if I never returned, then I want you to find another girl you'll love with all your heart. Don't date her out of pity... in fact, never do that anymore... let it become our history instead of anyone else's. Third... if you can... maybe... once per year, please, remember me, alright?
I love you... there's so many things I want to tell you, but... my time ran low... I love you, I love you, Ryou... I really do... That's why, instead of me, give that love you gave to me to other person who deserved it... and I'll be really happy if you do. Live without regret...

For a second, she felt happy for Natsuki. Even if it was out of pity, Ryouta had accepted, and at least was noble enough to not accept in a half-assed way. She felt even happier when Ryouta confessed that he actually had feelings for the girl after their first date together, but at the same time, she felt as if their hopes were crumbling like a castle of playing cards. Even if he was capable of viewing a person that he previously saw as her little sister, it was truly an exceptional person. But what about her? She was just a little girl that loved to cry about everything, and that would rather break before bending. What chance she had after such an exceptional girl? She couldn't but wonder about that question for some seconds before Koharu handed her the card.
Her eyes skimmed through the letter, and she had to try very hard to not to stain it with her tears. So this was Natsuki's handwriting. It looked cute.
"Ryouta has read that letter, I guess?" she said as she handed it back. Her honey eyes were crying to no avail; she just feel so sad about Natsuki, but guessed that at least she wasn't suffering that horrible disease now, and that wherever she was, she'd be most likely smiling down to Ryouta and to whoever would share his path. It was sad, but at the same time, it served as a kind of solace to her.
Yet, after all the things that Natsuki had done, Mana felt so... unworthy of Ryouta's feelings. She didn't know if she could turn into a more feminine girl as readily as her, and if she was frank, she was so unsure of herself on that moment. She totally admired Natsuki for her tenacity even against those almost impossible odds, as she would probably crumbled and given up, just as she did after yesterday. She had been found wanting, and that just added to the fact that light-Ryouta still saw her just as a sister. She thought that... she just couldn't bear with two rejections. Even if Natsuki was deathly ill, her will was so overwhelmingly strong compared to hers...
"Thank you for sharing Nat-chan's history with me, Koharu-san. Thank you very much. That has cleared my mind; now I know what I'll do about Ryouta-san".

"And I'm so sorry to ruin today with such story... but I think, I'll be telling anyone who wanted to be Ryouta's girlfriend this tale... Nattchan... she deserved the best replacement for her... I'm kind of like the filter... and honestly, Mana, I think you qualified, otherwise, I won't tell you this story at all... the story about orange scented girl... the reason why Ryouta avidly avoids oranges. Tangerines and other citruses... his house never put it on new year. Understandable, I say..."
She sighed and wiped her tears. "...Would you come with me to her grave one day? That is, if you already become his girlfriend..."
For some reason, she said it like she's so sure of that. However, if Mana were to correct her, she simply will raise her hand and muttered 'somehow, even if you said you will gave up your feeling for him now, then one day... definitely, you'll eventually return to his side. A girl's hunch, think it that way.' However, ultimately, she'll simply say...
"Live your life without regret, Mana... and believe that nothing can't get fixed if you're determined enough. Now, if you want something else to ask, you can ask now..."

That was it, then. "Koha-chan..." she muttered as she wiped her tears too, hoping that her new friend wouldn't mind the nickname "Thank you for telling me Nat-chan's history. It didn't ruin my day, if anything, it made me understand Ryouta-san better. Yet...".
She kept it quiet until she assumed that she would be the boy's next girlfriend. Yet... "Koha-chan, I don't think I'm worthy of Nat-chan's legacy. Honestly, she was such an amazing person and I'd be... terrified if I had to do so many changes, even if those were for increasing my chances with Ryouta-san. And maybe I'm being selfish, but even if I don't like citrics as much as Nat-chan, I still like them a lot. How do you think he'll react to that? What if he lashes out, thinking that I'm trying to replace her? I'm so... scared".
She hadn't adressed the grave thing, because she honestly thought that she wouldn't be her girlfriend. Yet, Koharu insisted that if even if she was giving up, she'd be at his side someday. Maybe she was right, but if she was, Mana didn't wanted to believe that just yet. She had given up a long time ago, and frankly, she didn't know why both she and Karin insisted so much on this, yet, she knew she had a question for Koharu in this moment. Even if she wasn't sure in about what to do, if she was going to try again with Ryoua, she should at least know something about the girl she was currently talking to.
"Are you sure that you don't want to be with Ryouta-san? If I'm going to live without regrets, you too should. Are you sure that what you feel for him is totally and absolutely not romantic?" she paused for a second, as her eyes got watery yet again "I would feel so bad if the story repeated itself and you didn't realize until it was too late, you know".

So the girl has turned into more timid as she said that? Koharu sighed a bit, but understood immediately. Natsuki is an exceptional girl, that's for sure... but that's just how she is... How for a girl like Mana who's more to the soft moon to outshine that sun, even after her death is really hard. That exceptional girl that looks positively in life instead of giving up midway...
"...Then you just have to be yourself, not someone who emulates Nattchan, even after you heard those from me," Koharu answered. "Mana-chan, don't think about this too much... if you really think that you wouldn't mind to not obtain Ryouta, then you can just ignore me and Karin's insistence that you two fits together... and as for me... I'll confess, alright, but I think, it's not like what you think, Mana-chan."
Koharu stared at the window, before uttering something.
"...I'm alone in this world, and despite I got a lot of friends, rarely they do goes length for me... Ryouta did that, and... as much as that sounds like something that would spark into romance... I don't think I love him that way... even if I do, I'm not like him. I'll just tell him my feeling, even if he got girlfriend... then, I'll just return back to like how we was, no hard feeling, nothing... I want to say my feeling, but I won't avoid him even if he rejected me... because that brother figure, that big muscular lug of a fifteen years old big bro... he's a rare guy to come... If I can't be his lover if I do love him that way, then I'm fine to be his little sister, because that's just how our relationship is. Sworn brother and sister until the end."

"I think that you're right, Koha-chan. He already knows how I feel, but that doesn't mean I'll avoid him. I mean, he's my big brother of sorts too, and if he decides that he'll begin to like me someday, well, I'll wait for him with my arms and my heart open. You know, tomorrow's gonna be his 'trial'; I've already said that I would help him that day, but I may as well try to make him notice me one last time before trying to search for happiness in another place. If that fails... well; as I said, he'll be my brother forever".
It was a last-ditch effort; she really didn't want to bugger Ryouta with her feelings, should them be unrequited. He was passing for a difficult time, and he didn't really need more emotional distress in his life (not that Mana could handle emotional distress at all). It was a simple thing, really; either he liked her or he didn't, and tomorrow she'd discover the answer of that question. No special tricks or pretending, she would be the same Mana that she always was, and if it seemed like he liked her, great. If not, great too!
As she looked at the window. Koharu said her sad quandary, and it touched Mana deeply. She stood up from her place in her chair and hugged her tightly. "Well, thank you for telling me all those things, Koha-chan. Even if you have meet me just today, I feel as if you were already one of those childhood friends who you can tell everything about you and they'll listen and accept you no matter what. Thank you for your friendship, Koha-chan. I promise that I'll try my best to reciprocate you".

"...Well, I guess I'm the same... just minus those 'I'm going to wait him with open arms', because... well, because it's not like that at all! Honestly, physical appeal wise, he's totally my type, but... well, personality wise? Naaaw. That's more like a cool big bro for me, nothing more. Ryouta's charming, but I prefer a guy who can make me free from all my worries and look straight of me, you know... I mean, the kind that understand my feeling and dedicates all his love to me... I guess I need the quiet type to balance my overly excited personality...." she explained.
As she suddenly got hugged by the younger girl out of blue, Koharu's eyes widened, but regardless, she smiled and stroke the younger girl's head.
"Geez, honestly, you don't have to go to that extent... but yeah... if we could meet sooner in life, I'm sure you'll be in our circle... With me, Karin, Yuuki, Ryouta and the others... And maybe, if fate is kind enough, even with Nattchan... That way, we can all have fun together... Hang out together... The fiery leader Yuuki, the equally fiery sub-leader... the unfriendly black cat Karin... and overly excited me... it'll be fun, really fun... ah, if only..." she sighed. "...And maybe, in that kind of dream world, too... I can love you better... Aria..."
She whispered that last sentence almost silently, but it doesn't seem that she's talking to Mana.
