It was just one of those days where it didn't feel necessary to really do anything. The sun was shining through the bedroom window, but it didn't make Maia feel like getting up any more than if it were pouring out. Instead, she sat at her desk, mumbling to a friend through a game's chat system. "No, no. You have to go left," she tried motioning to the screen, but the voice from the other side of the monitor just made a confused sigh. Pausing the game, she looked at the time. After a minute of consideration, she realized how late it was probably getting in her friend's timezone, before returning to respond with, "you know, let's just pick this up next time," before saying her goodbye and signing off.
Maia stretched over the back of the chair, before shuffling to peek outside, squinting, before just standing in her room, hands on her hips, trying to figure out what to do. It was kind of a drag when her friends were several timezones away! She supposed she could take a walk, but last time, she had almost gotten lost. The house was even quiet, as both of her parents had gone off to work for the day. After a short mental debate, she at least decided to check the mail.
The teenager made her way to the front of the house, after pausing in the kitchen to debate if she wanted anything. Deciding against it for the time being, she finally got around to opening the door, and taking a step out of the house. Only one, though, because she failed to look at the ground and almost fell when a random package ended up being in the same spot that her foot wanted to be. "What's this?" she mumbled to herself, reaching down to pick it up. It was just a regular looking cardboard box, with her name and address printed on it, but no return sender. The girl looked around, still standing outside, before shifting the box in both hands a bit. It felt almost like something was rolling a little with each movement. She didn't see the mail-person, so she couldn't even inquire about it.
"I didn't order anything, though..."

"Let's go! Let's go!" The white Digimon named Shiro paced in front of Kai's door. He was, in fact, acting very much like the cat he appeared to be. His sister Kuro, a black Digimon much more similar to a ferret or a weasel, chided him. "Patience." Meanwhile, their human Tamer, Kai Haimura, was getting ready to go. "You know how this works, Shiro. Get in the bag." He told the excited young Digimon. Fortunately, the twins were small enough that both could fit snugly in his school bag, if not comfortably.
"Aww, do I have to?" Shiro begged. His sister may be ambivalent about it, but Shiro hated being confined. Kai just shook his head. There were simple too many people around here! It was a residential area! He put on his best 'stern' face, and held it until Shiro gave up, and jumped in the bag.
He stepped out of his house, and looked around. If no one was around, he supposed he would let Shiro out. It wasn't good to spoil the Digimon, but it also wasn't good to coop him up. That was the entire point of taking him outside! The coast looked clear, but as he was about to give Shiro the OK, the door across the street opened. Unexpectedly, it was the daughter. In the six months that family had lived there, he had almost never seen her. "Hello!" He called, politely. She was just getting the mail, but it was still polite to greet her.

The blonde was so absorbed in the mysterious package that she almost didn't notice that one of her neighbors was outside. It only made sense, really, considering how nice it was out. "Oh! Hi," she shuffled the box awkwardly to one hand, to wave at him. Thinking about it, she actually hadn't met most of her neighbors since moving in. Though, she rarely had much reason to go anywhere aside from school. Actually, Maia didn't even think she knew the last name of the family living across the street. Not focusing enough on the box now, the contents shifted, causing her to shift suddenly to grab it again with both hands.
She doubted that the guy actually had anything to say, but figured she'd make some sort of conversation. It was worth a shot, since they were neighbors. Unfortunately, she didn't really know what to say to the stranger! "How are you today?" Basic enough, she guessed. In the meantime, she was working at picking the end of the tape covering the box, incredibly curious about what it could even be. She kept looking at the guy, though. He seemed about her age, so maybe they'd have some common ground.
Finally, the edge of the tape let up enough to grip onto, and she pulled it off with a slight struggle, so it wouldn't almost fall again. She couldn't imagine the contents were fragile, if they were rolling freely in the box, but who knew? Taking just a second to glance away from the boy, she peered under one of the flaps. "Uh," was all that managed out, and she could feel her face turning pink. There was a random egg inside! Who mailed eggs to people?! Was this some sort of joke? It wasn't even a small egg! This was like a weird ostrich egg-thing!
Amber eyes turned up to the other teen, hesitating a second, while trying to pull her thoughts together. She was trying to look a little irritated, finding it almost too convenient that mystery-neighbor was standing outside at the same time she found this strange parcel. Though, if it wasn't, she was just going to come off as a jerk or a moron. "Are you... pranking me or something?"

Oh. Kai hadn't expected to do anything other than exchange pleasantries. He could feel Shiro getting impatient in his bag. Fortunately the foreigner girl was far more interested in her package than in him, or she might have seen his bag shifting on its own. Shiro was catlike, so he could explain it away as hiding a stray from his parents... But he didn't trust the Digimon to stay quiet. Speaking cats were infinitely harder to explain away. "Oh, I'm... I'm good."
He wondered if he could get away not repeating the question to her. Sure, he didn't speak with her often, though he was pretty sure they went to the same school, but he really didn't want Shiro to burst out in front of her. And the Digimon would, he knew, if he loitered about for too long. Still, he shouldn't be rude. He'd make small talk until he could justify getting away. Her being a pretty girl about his age may have swayed his decision.
As he opened his mouth to speak, she finally finished opening her package. The words died in his throat. He couldn't be seeing what he was seeing. There was a Digiegg in the package? It couldn't be! He had to be mistaken! Digieggs didn't come in the mail! Did they? He was pretty sure that wasn't how it worked. Maybe it wasn't a Digiegg? But no, he'd seen a few Digieggs. There was no mistaking it. "Is this some kind of sick joke?" He spoke at the same time as the girl. Apparently she was just as surprised as he was.
Digimon were everywhere Kai looked, it seemed. No matter where he went, there were Digimon or their tamers, and that was even if he didn't count his own two! Now even the girl across the street had a Digiegg! Kai felt like his world was crashing slightly down. Well, the situation could be worse. "Hey, I smell a Digiegg!" Shiro poked his head out of Kai's bag, bristling with curiosity. Yep. It had gotten worse.

The neighbor seemed equally concerned about this present. "You didn't do this?" was the first thing out of her mouth. Who else would mail her this obnoxious thing? It only made sense, since it hadn't broken, that someone dropped it off by hand. Maia couldn't tell if she should take it as a joke, or some sort of threat, honestly! Is this what people in Japan did to terrify people? Mail them weird eggs? What if it was supposed to explode or something? For some reason, she felt the need to pull it from the box, to get a better look at it. To increase her alarm, it felt almost warm.
"Hey, uh, is this thing... is this alive?" not like the guy across the street would know, but she needed to express this concern to someone. "I mean, I've never see--" the words cut out when something else spoke, and a strange creature's head emerged from the stranger's bag. If her eyes weren't already wide, they sure felt like they were going to fall out of her head at this rate. It felt like her heart stopped for a second, as the egg almost slipped out of her hands. But, she managed to scramble it into a better grip, while speaking, in very alarmed English, "what is that?!" This was only going to make her day worse!
Normally, if she had seen the creature, she probably would have thought it was kind of cute. But, normally it would be a stuffed animal or something. No. This was not a stuffed animal. And someone mailed her an egg. And the guy from across the street had somehow brought aliens into her life. How was she supposed to tell her parents this kind of stuff? At this point, Maia couldn't even muster the courage to keep her mouth completely closed! At least gaining enough composure to keep to the area's native language, she took a deep breath. She wanted to look at the teen, but her eyes were too glued to the little monster in his bag. "Is this why movies about Japan are so crazy?" Oh, yeah. She had to be a moron. If that was all she could seriously say in this situation, she couldn't be alright.

She thought he did it!? Why would she think that!? Did she know? He couldn't imagine how she might know that he had something to do with the Digiegg, or that it even was a Digiegg. To her, it would just be a really big, brightly colored egg. Did she associate him with that kind of thing? He barely knew her! How had he given such an impression!?
The sudden English surprised Kai more than it should, considering she was a foreigner. Fortunately, he spoke her language, though even if he didn't, her tone was enough to get the gist of what she was saying. He didn't blame her. Talking cats. What was wrong with his world, that this was normal? Well, she'd better get used to it. It would be normal for her too, after today.
"Please, calm down, I'll explain!" He opened his bag the rest of the way, so Shiro could hop out. If he hadn't opened his mouth, he could have been thought of as a cat. Kuro, understanding what was happening, climbed up to Kai's shoulder. "You might want to sit down for this" She told the girl.
Kai ignored her question. He supposed that that was how she was coping with her world turning upside down. "These two are named Kuro and Shiro. They are Digimon, that is to say, Digital Monsters. Creatures from another world. That egg... Is a Digimon egg. I admit, I've never seen one come in the mail, before." Okay, pause. Give her a chance to comprehend what he was saying. Don't flood her with so much information that her brain short circuits. He could do this. He'd explained Digimon before.
Why did it feel like he was always running into new tamers? He was the least qualified to explain things to other people! But if he didn't who would? This girl, even if he didn't know her name, needed help. She had no idea what was happening, he did. Even if he was the worst Tamer in the world, he was the one who was there. He had to calm down, and help.

Digimon? What in the world was that? Maia tried to run through her head, thinking what she could be mis-translating. She had never stumbled onto this term before. Was it... an animal? But, he said digital. Animals weren't digital! Some of them could really be little monsters, though! Still, her mouth was open, and now she was trying to handle that there were two of these weird creatures, and both could talk. And they were from a different world. Yup. This was crazy-Japanese-movie in a nutshell. Not that she really understood anything he was saying, but he knew a lot more about this not-a-bird-egg than she did, obviously.
Through her internal, and somewhat external, breakdown, she tried to listen to what the neighbor was saying, she just ended up exhaling a puff of air. Scrambling for some sort of thoughts, she motioned toward the open door to her house, taking a step back. "I... need some tea. Or coffee. Something. I need something. Do you want something to drink? You really should; this country is crazy," she babbled, slightly, still grasping for a way to handle whatever this guy was telling her. Normally, she wouldn't invite people that she didn't even know into her house, but it was a special case. Plus, one of the little monsters was correct. She did need to sit down, or busy herself with something.
Stepping into the house, and to the side, still motioning with her free hand for him to enter the living area of the house, she glanced between both of the creatures on his body. "Are these things even legal to own?" She didn't want to be breaking any laws by having this egg. What if it was an endangered species or something?

Was she inviting him inside her house? Kai didn't really want to intrude like that, but he needed to explain what was going on. He couldn't force her to muddle through on her own. Where would Kai be if he hadn't had people to help him? Still, he didn't really need a drink. "Ah, no, I'll pass." He stepped into the house, Shiro happily hopping ahead of him.
"Wellll... I wouldn't say they're illegal, per se. Mostly because I'm not sure the government knows about them. There's an organization called D.A.T.S. that registers them, but they may or may not be Government affiliated. They usually only get involved when wild Digimon rampage in the Human world. As I mentioned, they come from another world." Thinking about it, he wondered if what he said was true. Digimon were kind of big, surely the government knew? "Still, best to keep them out of sight. Normal people... Don't react well when they meet Digimon."
"People like us, who have a Digimon partners, are called Tamers." He took out his Digivice. "This is a Digivice. You should have something like it, or will get one soon. I should warn you, Digivices are weird. Sometime they appear out of thin air, other times, you'll find that a device you're holding will turn into one." It was probably too late to warn her to put down her phone if she didn't want a new one. Besides, he wasn't sure that would be enough to save it, even if she, unlike him, was in the latter category.
"Now, the thing with Digimon. The reason they come here and find human partners. Humans help them grow much faster than they would naturally. The Digivice has something to do with this, but I'm not really clear on how. Err.... Are you following, so far?"

Maia made a couple faces at the stranger's explanation, before closing the door to the home once everyone had piled inside. She made a motion to a couch, which was placed behind a coffee table, before making her way to the kitchen, mumbling an "uh huh," to notify him that she could still hear him. She put water on to heat up, before returning to the area that she had left him. She supposed he could easily be a thief, but there wasn't too much that was easy to steal, so she wasn't too concerned. "At least I'm a 'normal people' then," she pointed out, still carrying the egg around.
Can I at least pick what device turns into that?" the blonde questioned, kneeling to set the egg against one of the arms of the couch. She didn't need it breaking all over the floor. What a mess! She also didn't need to have to buy all new electronics from it turning into a hunk of what seemed to be plastic. Finally, the teen turned to the digimon in her house. She couldn't believe she was about to talk to whatever-these-where, but she supposed they had started it. "Do you two want anything? Milk? I think we have donuts or something, if you're hungry? Do... do you even eat?" she hesitated. At this point, she was just trying to keep her mind too busy to just stop processing. She also needed to know this before the egg hatched. Did it need maintenance? Was it essentially an egg-cat-thing? She didn't understand the variables. Kuro and Shiro didn't necessarily look identical, so she wasn't entirely sure what to expect of her own. The girl also was on the fence on asking if she could pet either of the little monsters. She couldn't tell if they were kind of terrifying or pretty cute.
Sure, the girl had heard her company's question to her, but instead, a more pressing though arose, to counter his question on if she had heard him. "What's your name, anyway?" she knew his partners' names, but not his! But after a pause, she also made sure to answer, Humans, partners, digivices, growing," there was another pause, as something clicked into place. "Wait. Growing. They grow? How big do these things get?" Concern was swelling again, as she looked at the digimon, and then the egg. How was she supposed to hide it if the thing got huge?

Kai waited while the girl put water on for tea. "Sorry, but not as far as I know. You can't even control if something turns into it or not. Or when. I've known people who received theirs before their egg hatched, people who received one as their egg hatched, and I myself had these two with me for a whole week before I received it." While he was being crushed to death by a Digimon. But he didn't add that. She was confused enough without scaring her.
Shiro perked up at the mention of food. "Donut? What's that? I'd love one! Or ten!" Shiro never turned down food. Kuro, on the other hand, was more reserved. "No, but thank you for offering." Shiro would probably eat enough for all three of them, if the girl let him. Kuro and Kai didn't want to impose any more than that.
"Sorry, sorry. I'm Kai. Kai Haimura. Err... You?" He felt bad about not making introductions until now. He'd been so distracted by the Digiegg that he simply hadn't gotten around to it. Well, pretty big. The largest I've seen was probably... Two stories tall, maybe? But don't worry. Partner Digimon stay small unless you specifically want them to grow."" he added the last part quickly. "Digimon grow in stages, and in general they remain at the stage Kuro and Shiro are in, called Rookie. Now, they're smaller than most Rookies, but they rarely grow larger than a child It varies from species to species, though. so you'll just have to wait and see.

"So, don't hold expensive gadgets until I get one," she commented, regarding the digivice, before returning to the kitchen. She shuffled through a couple cupboards, pulling out a plate, and a tin of tea, and returned a minute or so later with a cup, and a with a few different kinds of donuts - some plain, some with powdered sugar, and a single chocolate. She wasn't so sure about giving digimon chocolate, so she didn't want to give him too many in the case he couldn't have them."How about five, instead? I don't need you to get sick inside," she suggested, placing the tray in reach of the more energetic of the two creatures.
She took a small sip of the tea, despite realizing she wasn't really interested in the drink. The girl had only needed something for her hands to do. "Maia Quinn," she responded, setting the cup on the table. Maia had found that, since moving to Japan, telling people her name seemed out of place, as it really didn't fit. It just screamed foreigner all over the place. But, there wasn't really anything she could do about it.
The terror returned to her face when Kai said that these things could become two stories. There was no way she could hide something that size. Still, she didn't ease up when he added that hers likely would not. In fact, it became more distressing when told that it could be child-sized. "I don't even really like children though," the teen fretted. "I thought I could handle it if they were cat sized. How am I supposed to hide a child-monster?" Maybe bad terming, but it was all that she could think to use for it, at the moment.

Shiro happily chowed down on the donuts. Kuro sighed. Five was really too many. They shouldn't spoil Shiro like that. After all, he'd expect that much food in the future! Why didn't Kai say anything? Seriously. She may love her master dearly, but he always forgot to pay attention to her and Shiro when a pretty girl was involved! When would he learn!? She conveniently ignored the fact that it was the same way when he was talking with boys. It didn't fit into her narrative.
"I said they rarely grow larger than that! The few I've met that were that size could also revert to their prior form, known as In-Training, when necessary. But the vast majority have been... Roughly the size of a small dog." Of course, a lot of the ones he had met had been either Terriermon, Lopmon, or Agumon, so he didn't have a really good judgement on Digimon size. As for how to hide them... Well, I can't really help you until we know what kind yours is. I know a lot of people pretend that they're stuffed animals. Also, some of them have holographic suits that give them the appearance of a human... Though I'm not sure where to get them."

Still, Maia seemed unconvinced by Kai's attempt to lighten her alarm. "Am I allowed to tell my parents about them, or...?" she hesitated, glancing at the egg. It just sat, crooked, against the arm of the couch, still. She had to wonder how long it would take for it to hatch, even! "I mean, we were talking about getting a new cat, but maybe I can tell them it's deformed or something if it looks funny?" How were these things so different in size that they could look like Kuro and Shiro or a child? Weren't they all called the same thing? None of this really made sense.
"I mean, what do I even do with it once it hatches, anyway?" Then, there was a pause, as something clicked, "where were you going, with these two, today?" Hopefully not to do something illegal. She did not want to live in a neighborhood where there were dogfights and drugs, minus the actual dogs. But, all this weird stuff sure did make it all pretty sketchy. Then again, she didn't really want one of these maybe-illegal creatures, herself. But, it sounded like she didn't have much choice. "Oh. Those digivice things. Have you ever tried searching them online? Like, maybe other people can explain why they morph from stuff you own and how to fix that?" Maybe that was a little out there, but Maia really liked her cell phone, and all of her electronics. But, now she was concerned to even check her texts.
Then, there was another unrelated question, directed more toward the little devil devouring donuts. Or to the more collected creature. It didn't matter. "And, can I pet one of you two? You're... kind of cute?" But terrifying. They were also quite terrifying.

Telling parents? Kai had somehow avoided it, and he hadn't asked anyone else... BlackAgumon had opened the door at Scout's house... But his parents seemed to be away, so he didn't know if they knew. "I can't really say... If you trust them I guess it would be okay for them to know, especially if they don't mind. Digimon can be troublesome though, so it might be best if they don't." Yeah, he knew his parents wouldn't like him traipsing around the Digital World... Especially not if they knew he'd almost died. "Yeah, if they're willing to let you keep a pet, and you can pass it off as such, go ahead. Just... Wait until it evolves to rookie, so you don't have to explain the sudden change."
Oh, I was going to take Shiro out to the park, to stretch his legs. He's stuck in my room most of the time, and hates every minute of it." The white Digimon quickly nodded his agreement. His name had been mentioned after all! Clearly it must be something to agree with! But he quickly went back to chewing on donuts.
Kai had to admit, he'd never looked it up online. He didn't have a private computer... And it didn't seem right to look this stuff up publicly. "Sorry, I can't help you there." He hated being this unhelpful, but he simply didn't know! And not knowing irked him deeply.
"Hey Kuro, did you hear? She called you cute!" Shiro laughed. Kuro, secretly flattered, still couldn't resist shooting back "She called you cute too, brother." "What! I'm not cute! I'm fierce! See!?" Shiro puffed up to prove his point... It was very cute. Kai chuckled. "Kuro doesn't like being pet since it ruffles her fur. Shiro... Well, go ahead." "Hey! What's that supposed to mean!?" came Shiro's rather predictable response.

"Hm," the girl hummed, in response to everything. Her neighbor really didn't seem to know much about the subject, himself. Obviously, he was not intended to be part of a welcome wagon to Digimon and all that encompassed them. That was okay, she supposed. At least his explanation seemed more natural, instead of rules that someone may have given her otherwise. "So, what is the ranking like for Digimon? You mentioned rookie and in-training. Is that it?" The blonde reached for her tea, took a sip, then watched as the two digi-critters reacted to being called cute.
Maia couldn't help but smile at their little antics, and even more at the "tough" puff of cute. "You can be adorably fierce; how's that sound?" she offered, listening to Kai's advice on safe-petting. "If she has static-y fur, I might have some stuff for that. Or a brush. If she's into that. Or either of them, really," the teen suggested, lightly, as she reached out to touch Shiro. She was being very careful to the entire ordeal, as she wasn't entirely sure what to expect from these tiny demon-things, but they seemed to be okay. "Don't people look at them weird at the park, though?"
Shifting, she moved to better pet the more energetic of the two. He was kind of bristly, so she took to more of a careful scritching, than a petting motion. Still, it was different than she had expected. She had just assumed that, being digital, they would feel... digital? Square, maybe? Though, it was really questionable what digital particles would feel like.
The thought of digimon-fur was lost fairly quickly, though, when a movement caught her attention. As if noticing the soon-to-be-tamer paying attention to someone else, her Digi-Egg had shifted! Now, instead of leaning against the couch arm, it sat perfectly upright, almost as if leering at Shiro and Maia. Or, at least, that's how the now-paranoid girl felt, causing her to freeze up, and stare at it. "Did you guys move the egg? It's kind of giving me the creeps."
