Oh, the ranking. He should explain that. "Right. So, when that egg hatches, a baby Digimon will be born. That first stage of life is known as Fresh, as in fresh out of the egg. From there, it will evolve into an In-Training level Digimon, and then a Rookie level. After that comes Champion, and Ultimate. I don't know about after that, if there are any." If there were, he hadn't been told about them. Well, surely five stages were more than enough? He had barely reached the third, it felt.
Hmph. Not 'dorable." Shiro pouted. However, being a great fluffy pushover, as soon as Maia began petting him he settled down and began purring. He really was just a cat. Meanwhile... "I can groom myself without your help, thank you very much. Sheesh. Static-y fur. How insulting.
"You'd be surprised. The park's usually pretty empty at the back corners. Actually, the only people I've really run into in most of those places are there with Digimon." Apparently, he wasn't the only one prone to taking his partners out to the park once in a while. All things considered, it was amazing he'd never heard rumors of monsters in the park. There sure were a lot of Digimon there for none to be noticed.
"Uhh... I didn't touch it." Kai hadn't seen the egg moving. He looked to his partners. Kuro was nowhere near it, and Shiro was perfectly content where he was. Unless one of them had developed psychic powers... Maybe it was beginning to hatch? That was really fast. Speaking of which, had Takahiro's egg even hatched yet? He didn't think it would happen this fast! Digimon were so inconsistent!

That seemed like a lot for the girl to remember. She didn't even know what made the Digimon go from one level to another. "They sound like those virtual-game pets," she pointed out, still petting the purring Digi. Maia kind of hoped that whatever she got would make purring sounds too. It was pretty cute. "I didn't mean anything by it," the girl tried to mend her offer of grooming products to Kuro, "sometimes it's just nice not to have to worry about keeping your fur pretty by yourself!" She had debated going further into some sort of appeal with the less friendly seeming 'mon, but decided that maybe she just needed to warm up to her a bit. Somehow.
"So, there are a lot of these creatures running around?" Maia let out a small sigh, thinking about it. Japan was so weird. She had never seen or heard anything about these things there. It seemed like, if they were outside of Japan, she would have at least encountered one of them knowingly. Then again, leaving the house wasn't something she had often been given much option to do. What if they were all over the world, and she had just been blind to them?
It became quite unsettling that nobody stepped up to admit to touching the weird egg. She didn't really think any of them would have wanted to touch it, anyway. Heck, it was on the couch because Maia, herself, was kind of scared to hold onto it! But, now, it shifted again, falling to its side, before rolling. Before the girl could even open her mouth to say something, it fell off the couch and hit the ground with a solid crack! Amber eyes went wide, looking to Kai for some sort of answer to what had happened. One was received soon enough, though, as a "mrphhh," groaned out from the very-damaged bottom of the egg.

Virtual pet games? Kai wasn't entirely familiar with them, though Yui said her Digivice had been one of them prior to changing. If that was an analogy that worked for Maia, he'd let her have it. "Hmph." was all Kuro would say. This girl was casting aspersions on her ability to groom herself! Who did she expect to use the brush, Kai!? The human had no knowledge of such things!
Err, yeah. Quite a few. At least one other lives in our neighborhood." He didn't bother mentioning that Scout turned into a Digimon, as well as having one as a pet. He didn't want to be too confusing just yet. As he was wracking his brain trying to come up with an exact number, something surprising happened! Maia's digiegg rolled forward on its own, cracking on the hard flooring. Kai was stunned. Was it damaged? Was the Digimon inside okay?
A soft groan from the egg told him that it was alive at least. "Hatching! It's hatching!" Shiro squeeked excitedly, before hopping down to be near the egg. Even Kuro looked at the egg curiously, to see what would emerge.

In their neighborhood? How was she so blind to these things that she didn't even know that two people had these weird pets? This was concerning her, greatly. She debated on asking who it was, but it wouldn't matter anyway. There was no chance she knew anyone else in the area if she didn't even know the guy across the street. "I think I need to go outside more," she mumbled. Though, then it posed the question on if she was the last one to get invited to this crazy-mutant-pet party.
It was still more pressing, though, that the egg was now on the floor, damaged, and groaning. Shiro seemed the most excited about this, and Maia was still having a hard time comprehending what was going on. "It's hatching? Well, at least the girl didn't have to find out how to take care of it until it hatched, anymore. But, it didn't really continue hatching, instead wiggling, and making frustrated huffs every few seconds, before a ridiculous "help!" cried from the cracks, and toppled the egg to a less damaged side. This was seriously going to be the start of her 'Tamer' career? A creature that couldn't even figure out how to escape a thoroughly cracked egg?
Maia shuffled over to the egg, giving her neighbor an embarrassed glance, before reaching down to lift the egg, which simply bottomed out to the small amount of weight that wiggled inside. A little, white puff-ball floated to the ground, before happily bouncing between the Digimon that was greeting him, and his new human. How exciting! For it. For Maia, this was still terrifying. "You are... not a cat," the girl pointed out, rather quickly. This would make it harder to convince her parents that it was a pet-friendly animal.
"Nope! I'm a Pafumon!" the dust-bunny-thing shouted, back, still bouncing with excitement.

Was this what it was like for Digimon to hatch? Kai's partners had hatched before he met them, so he didn't know. He did know that Shiro would never admit it, if it was. For such a small Digimon, he had an excess of pride! He tilted his head at the cries for help, but before Shiro could 'help,' Maia freed her partner from its shell. "Heya Pafumon! I'm Shiro, the KoShiromon! Grumpypants over there is Kuro, the KoKuromon!" "I am not grumpy!" Kuro insisted, but Shiro paid her no heed.
"Congratulations, you're a Tamer." Kai told Maia. "You should have your Digivice by now..." Shouldn't she? He was the only weird case that he knew, where he hadn't received a Digivice until it was nearly too late. Heck, several people he knew had obtained a Digivice before an egg!

Pafumon was ecstatic, bouncing at the introductions. Though, he really didn't stop bouncing anyway. This was too exciting to stop moving for! Finally, he turned to Maia, and lunged at her, causing her to let out a small squeak, and stumble to catch the dustball. "This is my human! Have you all met my human?" Pafumon tried to travel onto his tamer's shoulder, but she made a point to stop him from scrambling everywhere. "Of course you all have - I haven't! This is a problem!" The digimon was more-or-less rambling at this point, simply out of excitement, but instead of turning to Maia, now eyes went to Kai. "Who are you?!" he shouted, fluffing up a little, before squirming from Maia's arms and leap-floating at Kai, in an attempt to be caught again.
Maia, on the other hand, was still relatively motionless, mouth dropped. This thing was a little canon! There was no way that she was going to be able to babysit this thing! "Does a digivice help control this thing at all?" the girl panicked, making rapid motions at the impossible to handle digimon. Next thing she knew, he'd probably be trying to eat her stuff. "Cause I'm not sure I want it if it means I have to take responsibility for whatever he breaks," she pointed out. At least with the digimon out of her hands, she had time to check her pockets. Her phone was still in tact, though she tried not to touch the thing too long for it to not be. "So, if I don't have a digivice, what does that mean? Do I pack him back in the box, and hope someone picks him up?"
"I'm a non-refundable package, I'll have you know!" the digimon squealed, still attempting to catch the attention of the male tamer. "Did your digimon come in a box, too?

Pafumon was so energetic, it was almost like he hadn't just hatched! Kai almost had trouble following, as the little thing climbed all over both the house and Maia! Unexpectedly, it leaped at him, though he reflexively put out his hand to catch it. So light! "I'm Kai. Nice to meet you, Pafumon." He chuckled, but the Digimon was already on its way!
"If it does, I haven't noticed!" Kai said, with a pointed glance at Shiro. "That's right! I can't be controlled so easily!" the white Digimon declared triumphantly. Yup, that about summed it up. "I believe they... Mature, as they grow. Slightly. Maybe by the time he reaches Rookie, he'll calm down." He was assuming, of course, that Pafumon was a he. And his statement was... Slightly contradicted, as Shiro didn't seem any calmer than he had before evolving.
"Well, it was a week before I received mine. It can take time... For now, maybe check the box that Pafumon came in? I know at least one person whose Digivice was in the bush where they found their egg." Seriously, what was with that box!? Did it have a return address? Who had sent it? How had it gotten there? And how did Pafumon know so much when it had just hatched!?
"Hah! As if a box could hold my splendor! I'll have you know this KoShiromon personally tore a hole between the human and Digital worlds to come through!" Shiro boasted. Was that what had happ- "No. You didn't." Kuro pointed out, but she didn't add more. How those two had gotten into Kai's room would remain a mystery.

"What's the point in the digivice, then?" Maia sighed, trying to watch Pafumon, while still paying attention to everything else going on around them. "It's so you'll love me," was Pafumon's very casual response, floating over to Maia's tea, and downing the entire thing in one drink, "this is hot!" he shrieked, flailing, then making his way to Shiro. He was also very excited that other digimon were around, so maybe his tamer was already used to the creatures. Not that it looked like that were the case, but one should stay positive!
All that the girl could feel was her mind overloading again, and began to rub her forehead. "You don't sound very confident about it maturing," she pointed out, with a small gesture toward Shiro, who was now the sole focus of her own tiny Digi. "If anything else was in the box, it should have been a manual," the blonde added, before quickly making her way to the box, which sat by the door. "I don't... Oh!" Sure enough, she pulled out a small item, with purple grips. She was going to try to ignore the fact that Kai had potentially mentioned yet another Tamer. Or it was the one from the neighborhood. She really wasn't sure how many people Kai knew. Maybe it was something that happened when people got a Digimon, they'd just join some sort of dumb club. "I don't know what to do with it, though," she pointed out, looking over the entire device, before gesturing with it to Kai.
"Wow!" Pafumon gaped, until Kuro pointed out that Shiro had lied. Still, it had to be pretty cool if they didn't get shipped to Japan! He debated on prying, but instead, found himself hurrying to the box in which he had come in, leaping inside after the Digivice was extracted, and exclaiming, "this is my box!"

Oh, had he not explained? "No, Pafumon, not quite." He turned back to Maia. "The Digivice transfers energy from you to your partner, which is how they can Digivolve further. As I said, Digimon partner with humans because we help them grow faster." He had said that, right? It was usually one of the first things he explained, the 'why' of why Digimon needed human partners.
He didn't sound very confident about it maturing because he wasn't confident. He chose to ignore her comment, though, rather than contradict himself. He waited while she checked the box. Yup, as expected, a Digivice. Kai remained the only weirdo with the late Digivice. His assumption that he hadn't been meant to be Kuro and Shiro's tamer grew even stronger. He pushed his jealousy down. He had a job to do here.
"Yeah. Heck, I don't even know how it works. I've tried pressing the buttons, but I haven't figured anything out. You'll just have to try it for yourself." Not that he'd tried very hard, of course. It was the only proof that he was Kuro and Shiro's partner, and he didn't want to break it.

"So, I'm going to be tired all the time?" the girl asked, as she began pushing the buttons on the device. It didn't really seem to do anything. There wasn't even a beeping sound when she hit the buttons. Maybe she needed to charge it or something before using it. She decided to figure that out by herself, later on. "And you keep saying that it makes them grow," she pointed out, "why, exactly, do they need to grow? What triggers growing?" They didn't just eat a lot and get fat? He had explained rankings to her, but she still wasn't exactly sure what ranks did for the digimon.
Pafumon decided to take this as an opportunity to add in his own comments, bouncing around, onto the back of the couch, and then leaping onto Maia's shoulder to add, "it's all so you'll love me!" before whirling off, and floating down to the ground. Sweeping across the floor, he went to interact with the other digimon again, "have you gone on lots of adventures?" The little puff began squirming around, looking between the twins. He hoped they had stories. He wanted to hear about how awesome being with a tamer was!
Taking a deep breath, Maia began to realize how uncomfortable everything probably was for Kai. He had just wanted to go to the park for the day, and ended up in a stranger's house, trying to explain digital beings that wanted to be house pets. It had to be frustrating, and all she was doing was asking him question after question. "I'm sorry," she finally threw in, "I probably shouldn't have forced you to explain all of this stuff." Turning a little, she got a better look at Pafumon, who now had his tongue on the floor, as if tasting it, still awaiting stories from the other Digimon in the house. That couldn't be healthy.

"Yup, pretty much." Pafumon was definitely going to be a handful. "As a neighbor, don't be afraid to ask me for help if he's too much trouble." Somehow, he was pretty sure she could manage without him. He was pretty excessively useless at anything that had to do with Digimon, after all. She'd probably manage better once he'd left.
Right, well, I told you about the stages of growth in Digimon? Normally, they grow pretty slowly between those stages, not that I can give you an exact timescale. There's a few exceptions. But for the most part, they grow pretty slowly. Partnered Digimon, however, can use their tamer's energy, transferred through the Digivice, to temporarily take on a higher form. I'm not entirely sure how to trigger it, as I said, I've fussed with my Digivice, to no avail." He was beginning to think he was a worthless tamer! It had been nearly a month, with no signs of growth! Though, perhaps that was normal? Certainly, he couldn't expect it to be only a week between growth stages, as it had been between meeting his partners and their first Digivolution. He just had to be patient.
Oh, I've been on adventures you wouldn't believe!" And Shiro began regaling the new Digimon with tales of adventure. If he embellished his role in more than a few, well, Kai wouldn't begrudge him that. "Oh, no, it's fine. I'm happy to help. I'm just sorry... That I don't really know that much about everything."

Her neighbor's answers were not necessarily uplifting. If only it had just been a plain old cat in the box. That would have been perfect. But, no, it was a mysterious alien-thing. Though, in all fairness, a cat being mailed to her would not be animal-friendly. Not that mailing an egg was. She still couldn't figure out how it managed to make it to her doorstep unscathed. And, to imagine what the shipping would have cost to get such an item to her door!
Pafumon was enthralled with the tales that Shiro was telling, wiggling with joy. "You're exciting!" he announced, gleefully. He wanted to go on adventures, too! Maybe, he could convince his tamer to take him to do awesome things! He needed to get bigger, first, though. "I can't wait 'til I digivolve, so I can be awesome too. Can we all go on adventures together then?"
"Ah," Maia's attention turned to the digimon for a second, "I did not agree to adventures. I didn't agree to any of this stuff!" With a wag of her finger at Pafumon, he deflated a little, before perking up with a "I'll change her mind!
But, Maia had already turned back to her conversation with Kai. "So, you don't know how to get him to... whatever stage it was that you told me to wait for, before talking to my parents about him?" There was a pause, debating, then turning to Pafumon for a second, "hey, are you a 'him'? What do I call you?" This just triggered the little digimon to puff up his chest, along with most of his body, and attempt to bellow, "I am Pafumon! I will adventure!" without really providing an answer to her question. Male pronouns it was, then.
Still, the blonde felt bad for dragging the other tamer into her dilemma. "Well, thank you," she started, "you know a lot more about this than I do." She'd have to make him cookies or something, sometime, to thank him. If he even liked things like that, considering he had rejected her offer of just about anything when he had entered the house.

"Hah! Of course you can!" Shiro told the other Digimon, at the exact time that Kai told it, "You'll have to talk to your Tamer about that." He was fond of the little thing. It reminded him of Shiro, who, for all his faults, Kai was quite fond of. Maia, though, seemed much less enthused by the idea of adventure. Kai didn't blame her. The Digital World was not a place for humans! Heck, it wasn't even a place for Rookie Digimon!
"Sorry, no. You'll just have to wait." Waiting had worked to get them to Rookie, at least. Well, that, and... "They also seem to be more likely to Digivolve when their tamer is in danger, but I wouldn't recommend that." Not only did it seem likely, he hadn't digivolved without! Maybe it was required? But he wasn't about to tell her 'Throw yourself off a cliff and see if it works.' He was probably wrong, anyways, or at least partially so. Digimon were weird!
"Thanks, but... I really know nothing at all. Only basic stuff. I wish I could help more..." Yeah, there was a lot left to tell her. Like about the Digital World and Spirit users. But that could wait until she grew accustomed to her partner- And by the looks of it, quite some adjustment would be necessary. "Well, sorry to leave you like this, but I should probably head off. There's nothing really more that I can teach you, and if I stay any longer, Shiro will demand more donuts!" He laughed awkwardly at his joke. No? Okay. He scooped up Shiro as he finished the last of the donuts, and carefully stuffed him in the bag along with Kuro before leaving.
