Isaac nodded. "You're right. I mean, I don't regret taking that chance. I just regret totally bungling it up," he admitted. His voice seemed half-joking, but half genuinely irritated with himself. While it seemed like Isaac was making some headway in getting this matter off of his chest, there was clearly some lingering trouble. He tried to bury it beneath a smile, though. What sense was there in worrying Maia? "Can't help but feel like things'd be different if I didn't just freeze up like that. But who knows? Maybe one of these days I'll give it another shot. The Digital World's been doing wonders for my confidence." Of course, it's also given the lingering fear that one day he'd freeze up and get Elliot majorly hurt. But if people like Maia were backing him up, maybe he'd be able to work up the effort after all.
Upon hearing that Maia had never experienced his problems before, Isaac sighed in relief. "Thank goodness. You're really creative and thoughtful. You sure as heck deserve better than getting stomped down by a bunch of jackasses like that," he said. Maia's artwork, for example! He hadn't had too much chance to see it yet, but he sure knew Maia. Between her careful eye and the eager way she kept looking for new material to work with, he was positive that Maia was capable of making some amazing art. The idea of someone who meant the world to him getting torn to shreds by a bunch of thoughtless pricks left him burning up inside. Trying to shake the thought, he resumed his focus on the sushi. It was really good! The two had picked a great choice of restaurant to check out, and if this was going to be one of Isaac's last meals in Japan it was certainly one that would stick with him for a while.
"Do you have any of your art on you? I'd love to see it, if you're okay with that," Isaac said, figuring now would be a great time to get the topic off of him and onto Maia. He hated talking about himself!

The Digital World was pretty good for adjusting one's attitude. Aside from the small meltdown back in the Dark Area, Maia had found herself a little less panic-stricken after the trips to the strange other world had increased. She had to wonder if Isaac knew about that yet. A part of her had hoped that Elliot left out the part where she had crumpled onto the floor in the locked down elevator-room. But, it was unlikely. One would expect such close brothers to tell one another just about everything. Especially if Elliot was involved.
A small smile was on her lips, hearing Isaac's concern about her. The girl wasn't going to say anything about her art, as far as her past experiences had gone, but they certainly hadn't been laughed at. And, she hadn't done too much outside of art that others would have been able to experience in any sort of event. Art wasn't like theater! It wasn't Maia on a stage, it was a drawing. And the 'lines' were of a totally different sort!
Wait, he wanted to see her art now? But, she hadn't had a chance to draw anything spectacular before he could see them! Especially in the sketchbook that she carried around. It had the picture of Shiro in it, but that was probably the best one of the lot, but mostly because she had put so much time into the shading! "Uhm, yeah," she nodded, shifting to pull her bag onto her lap, the girl felt the need to add, "I have a better artbook at home." This one was just portable! The other was a little too awkward to fit into the bag! And, a certain fox wouldn't be able to sit in her purse otherwise.
Still, she pulled out a small sketchbook, setting it on the edge of the table. "It's," Maia hesitated, "mostly Digimon." What was to be expected from the sketches that were made while she wasn't home? Though, a lot of the sketches in the other had become similarly themed.
If Isaac flipped through the notebook, he'd easily be able to see a lot of Maia's encounters, as one of the first pages was a white cat monster scarfing donuts in her living room, then there was just a page covered in doodles of Pafumon, a Patamon, and an Impmon wearing a pendant. Through varied sketches of Kuu in his varying forms, there also happened to be a scene of a nightmare-inducing Porcupamon in the lab. Certainly not bad art, despite her hesitance to show him!

Isaac didn't know the details of Maia's panic, but he was a rather perceptive person. When they discussed the day, Elliot left the issue floating in the air. He only mentioned that he wished Isaac was there to keep a bit of an eye on Maia, and to make sure he got into contact with her soon to make sure she was okay. It was enough for Isaac to know that something was up, but neither boy wanted to disrespect Maia by pushing too deeply into her innermost thoughts. Besides, after Elliot blabbed about Maia to Alicia, the boy started watching his tongue more when Maia was the subject matter. That didn't stop Isaac from realizing that Maia may've needed some attention, though. Perhaps she would've noticed an extra-strength hug the next time they met up in person.
Rather than inconvenience Maia by forcing her to stretch across the table when she handed off the sketchbook, Isaac decided to switch seats to be right next to her. Not only would it be easier to read, but it would also be easier to hear the artist's commentary in case he stumbled upon a particularly good picture. It was interesting to Isaac how the very first thing Maia did was mention she had a better book as she gave him the current one. Was she already worried he would say something bad about it, or was she just being humble? Regardless, her apparent doubts only made Isaac's resolve to read stronger. He smiled reassuringly at Maia as he took the book and opened it up. "With how huge a part of our lives they are now? Not surprised. Heck, I bet if I ever get on stage again it'd be for Digimon: The Musical," he joked. Then he immediately flushed red as he realized what types of questions he had opened up the door for. No, no, no, he did not sing, he thought to himself as the sirens in his brain went into maximum overdrive.
Quick, it was time to distract with art critique! The highly-detailed picture of Shiro was the first thing Isaac noticed. He turned to Maia, mockingly rolling his eyes. "Come on, Mai, really?" he asked, tone as dry as a week-old biscuit. "I thought this was a sketchbook, not a photo album." The details of the picture were so great, and the shading so lifelike. Maia had certainly started her sketchbook off with her best foot forward, and it left Isaac excited to see the rest. They weren't as perfectly picturesque, but it was clear that they had a lot of heart and detail put into them. The proportions were lifelike, or at least as lifelike as Digimon proportions could be, and the fact that she was even able to sketch a Digimon as hyperactive and perpetually mobile as Kuu was pretty amazing to Isaac. "Surprised you could get him to sit still long enough to model," he commented.
Porcupamon made him jump a little. The dark details, the jagged lines, and the lumbering pose were all so different from the softer works of the earlier pages. However, that wasn't the most important part of the picture. It was when Isaac realized that one of two things was true. Either Maia was suicidal enough to put her art over her own chances of escaping a terrifying monster, or she hadn't even needed Kuu to model at all. Slowly the realization dawned in Isaac's eyes, the boy turning to Maia curiously. "Wait, did you draw these from-?" The question wasn't finished, but the last word hung in the air; memory. Slowly, Isaac broke out into what could almost be described as a proud grin. "Well, aren't I the luckiest guy in the world? I'm having dinner with a genius!"

With the musical comment, Maia smirked, giving a shrug. She couldn't imagine Isaac as much of a singer. The concept was incredibly silly! But, if he actually could sing, that'd be something! "Maybe I'd audition for that one," the tamer joked, before pausing, "or... er, buy a ticket to see it, really." She was not an actress!
There was a short glance to the sketchbook, when Isaac opened it, before looking over the sushi. Not even looking up when she heard her name, the girl let out a small, "tch," as she stifled a snicker. "I had a lot of time to work on that one." And, it still wasn't perfect, as far as she was concerned! Then again, an artist was never fully satisfied with their work, were they? There was absolutely nothing else that could be done with the picture, though. Maybe it was actually pretty perfect.
After her comment, she reached out, picking another piece of sushi. While she wanted to make point out that Kuu hadn't actually sat still for any of his drawings, the blonde was busy eating, so instead she just let out a small, "mmh." It seemed as soon as Maia had finished the piece, Isaac had gotten to the Porcupamon. Eyes shifted to the page, curiously. Was something wrong with it?
Well, the modeling thing made sense, now. Did the boy think that Maia had been drawing all of this as they happened? "Not even kind of a genius," the girl shook her head, rapidly. If she was, she'd be acing all of her classes! "But, you're right. Those are from memory," she confirmed. "I'm not crazy enough to draw that while it's in front of me!" No kidding! She'd be dead! "I wish I had my other sketchbook," she added, reaching over to lightly tap the drawing, "I have another in it that I bet Elliot would appreciate." Ah well. Maybe, she'd be able to show them over a video chat sometime or something.

Isaac couldn't help but grin a little at Maia's vigorous denial of her brilliance. She was way too humble. It was kind of relieving, but in part he wished Maia'd see just how critical and unique of a trait she'd possessed. "I'd say you're pretty genius, at least," he responded, shrugging slightly. "You could ask me to draw some of the stuff I've seen from memory, and you'd likely get a bunch of vaguely Digimon-shaped scribbles on a page. Heck, I don't even know if I could describe them in words even half as well as you've nailed them on paper." Like that one Andromon prototype he fought in the bowels of the facility, for example. The most Isaac could remember about that was weird, limbless robot man. Maia would've had it depicted in full portrait before he could stammer out what color he thought its cybernetic implants were.
He perked up at mention of the second sketchbook. Right, she said this was her less good one. Realizing that this was the one she was less proud of, suddenly Isaac found himself filled with desire to see the one she did enjoy more. "So do I. If the other one's better than these masterpieces, I bet it'd knock me dead just looking at it!" the boy said. His tone was as light as air, and it was clear that any lingering discomfort he had from bringing up the stage was long gone. Maia had a way of really bringing the smiles out in him, and Isaac didn't even want to think about how much it'd sting having to leave her behind. Could the world just do him a favor and not let today end? Isaac felt like he could sit next to Maia forever, poring over her books and eating sushi while lost in rapt interest.
"So, got one Elliot would appreciate, huh?" Isaac asked, interested to hear what Maia could've meant by that. "That'd really brighten his day, I bet. Just don't end up showing him the Porcupamon one by mistake, though. Poor kid's still seeing it lumber through his dreams." Isaac may have still been haunted by the facility as well, but he sure as heck wasn't going to admit it. Especially not today!

The girl smiled at the compliments. "I don't know. I'm good with details, but I can't remember names for the life of me," she admitted. There was a short pause before adding a teasing, "what was your name again?" To emphasize that she was jesting, the teen stuck out her tongue briefly. "I do better with the ones that I see more than once, though. It's why Shiro, ah, the first one, turned out so well." Isaac didn't know that was Shiro, right? Sure, Kuu had mentioned him before, but she wasn't sure if it was obvious that was the Digimon!
"Well, I'd hate for you to die. Maybe I shouldn't show you the other sketchbook," Maia teased again, glancing at the book that Isaac had been looking through. "I want to draw your new spirit sometime, too," she murmured, almost hesitantly. Was it weird to request that? Or, maybe it was more weird when she didn't ask. After all, that Porcupamon had no idea that she had drawn him! What if he was offended?
Hearing the part about Elliot's nightmares, Maia let out a small sigh. "Is he doing alright from it? I mean, he was pretty great fighting it," she tried to make the situation sound a little lighter. But, it was understandable! Kuu wouldn't let his tamer have nightmares, so she didn't really get to experience the same level of trauma as everyone else. Instead, the blonde had to fear suffocation by Digimon sleeping on her face! Though, she certainly wasn't going to forget the horror monster any time in the near future.

Isaac snickered a little at Maia's teasing. The girl was usually pretty quiet and straight laced, so it was always a nice treat seeing her cut loose and tease him. She could be downright hilarious when she wanted to be. "I dunno. The guy of your dreams, maybe?" he joked back, before bursting into laughter at his own expense. "God, I'm sorry. That one was way too cheesy. Not even that Gouda of a joke." The door to the cheese puns had opened. May the joke gods have mercy on these two's souls. "Still, it's a really impressive trait. What I'd do with that kind of memory." Maybe he'd be able to remember his lines, for once! Nope, not bitter still. Not bitter at all. In more productive and less self-grumbly thoughts, he figured some better focus and eye for detail would do wonders for his grades.
Maia continued the teasing momentum. "You sure you wouldn't want to go into comedy or something? Because you're a natural," Isaac remarked. Something about how natural and warm the girl's jokes were caught Isaac's eye, and made him more receptive to her teasing than he would be in normal situations. It took some major talent to get such a wound-up boy to let his guard down! Of course, she was also a natural at art, and judging by her murmured request he was going to be her next subject. What an honor! "Sometime? How about sooner rather than later? After dinner, I'd love to give you the chance to sketch me," he said, a reassuring smile on his face. He could tell from the murmur that she felt a little bit awkward about it. What better way to get past that awkwardness than to be completely on board with the idea? Besides, he was a little curious and excited to see how Maia depicted his form. He didn't really have much time to check himself in the mirror, so how Yasyamon looked in motion was a big mystery to him.
"Yeah. Yeah, I think Elliot's gonna be okay," he added, upon hearing Maia's question about his brother. He couldn't restrain the small bit of pride from flashing in his eyes at the mention of how Elliot fought the Porcupamon. "He's really been coming far, hasn't he? Kind of amazed he's been taking to the Digital World so well," he commented. "He always seems so skittish there, but he's been rising to the occasion whenever we've been having trouble. I'd probably be toast most days if I didn't have him backing me up. I just worry about him staying safe sometimes, you know? I'd feel awful if we did something dumb and he got himself hurt."

At the joke and the laughter, Maia's face went blank for a split second, before she began to snicker. The pun only made it worse! Or, was it better? "I think they're pretty grate." At least that cheese pun was a little less obvious than the rest! Though, until now, the blonde hadn't really thought her eye for detail wasn't anything particularly special. Sure, some people had awful memories, but she hadn't considered hers to be above par.
"I'd be awful with comedy," she shook her head, rapidly. And if it was in front of people? Forget that! Sure, she'd encourage Isaac if he wanted to work his way onto one, but there was no way the blonde could ever take up a stage! Just standing on one to be acknowledged made the teen uncomfortable. Maia wasn't meant for the spotlight. On the suggestion of what to do after they finished eating, the girl found herself a little surprised. She hadn't expected him to be quite as on board for this! Hopefully, she could do the spirit some justice. "S-sure," the girl agreed. That would be nice."
Isaac seemed pretty proud to hear about her opinion on his brother's ability. At least he looked like he thought Elliot would make a full recovery from any mental scarring that the weird puppet monster may have provided. On the bright side, Maia and Kuu had been the only two to see Porcupamon devour another Digimon, from what the tamer had gathered. That was pretty disturbing. Even Kuu was upset about it! "I wouldn't worry about him too much," the girl tried to reassure. She didn't want to tell him not to worry about his brother at all. It wasn't in Isaac's nature! And, if Elliot did get hurt, she didn't want to feel bad for telling the brother not to worry. "He's smart. I doubt he'd get hurt too easily."

Isaac blinked at Maia's compliment of his pun. "I dunno. I really didn't think that was my best wo-" Then her counter-pun hit him, Isaac seeming to freeze in mid-response as his brain struggled to calibrate to the magnitude of puns Maia was flinging around. He almost wanted to hate himself for snickering at that one. It was so bad! "God, I didn't even see that one coming. You're cheddar than I expected at this." A stretch? Eh, maybe, but slap it over a raging fire and cheese could stretch like a champion. Besides, he was far too stunned by such an out of nowhere quip to even devise a suitable response. Sometimes, you just have to know when to quit, and Isaac seemed practically incapable of it.
Upon hearing the girls slight stutter in her acceptance of his offer (or was it his acceptance of her offer?), Isaac put a gentle hand on her shoulder. It sounded like someone was in need of reassurance, and who better to give it than the subject of her latest piece? "Hey, come on. No need to worry. You've got the talent and the dedication, so I know you'll end up making something great," he said, a warm smile on his face. If he was going to trust anyone to capture himself in art, it'd be Maia. Was he kind of shy about the offer? Okay, maybe a little. But it was a worry worth pushing past to help encourage someone who had been there for him so often on this vacation.
Maia had a good point with her reassurances. Elliot had been holding his own remarkably since the duo came to the Digital World. Even if Isaac still spent so much time worrying about his safety, in the short time that they had been around Elliot had risen to the occasion time and time again. Often he was instrumental for bailing Isaac out of trouble, even. That didn't stop the protective instincts of a big brother from burning within him, but hearing from people that weren't him that his little bro would be okay was very helpful. Besides, it would only be a few more days before they could go home and Elliot would be out of harm's way for good. Maybe this would be a learning experience for them, not a harmful one. "Yeah, sometimes I feel like I should give him more credit. I guess it's hard to me to adapt to him being Strikedramon when I'm so used to him being Elliot," he eventually admitted, fumbling for the distinction. "I mean, you've seen him in human form, he's so small. And fragile."

As Isaac processed the pun, the blonde's smile seemed to grow. Ha, he actually caught it! At first, she thought it was going to fly right over his head. On top of that, he threw another pun out there. "You win this time," she teased. After all, if Maia went into full cheese-pun mode, there may be no turning back! Though, there were still a few ideas for comebacks. The last thing she needed was Kuu arriving at their table to tell them to kindly shut up. The fox hated puns, so he would hopefully be unable to hear any of the conversation!
While there was some form of reassurance behind Isaac's words, the teen only found herself nodding with a, "we'll see how it turns out." She just hoped that she could do the boy justice! Even if most of her art turned out pretty well, it didn't mean that every piece would. What if his was one that didn't? That would be pretty embarrassing, after all.
"He's Elliot no matter what," Maia pointed out, thinking about the differences. Sure, one version could defend himself far better than the other, but it was still ultimately the same boy. "But, I understand what you mean," she agreed. "I'm sure he's best with you beside him in scary situations, anyway." Honestly, Maia didn't see the younger brother as particularly fragile. Sure, he had a problem with his leg, but that didn't hinder him as badly as one may think. Isaac was probably just seeing with big-brother goggles, or something.

'He's Elliot no matter what.' That quote resonated with Isaac just as much as it surely did with Maia, even if for opposite regions. "Yeah. He is. I don't care if he Digivolves into some kind of demigod. I'm still his big brother, and that means I'm going to do anything and everything I can to be there for him," Isaac said, voice firm. It was clear that Elliot's well-being was a non-negotiable matter for Isaac, and the mere idea of Elliot being hurt without his watchful eye was cause for concern. It seemed once a big brother, always a big brother.
Besides, His voice echoed in the back of Isaac's head. 'That boy' had gotten 'his son' crippled for ever. Someone who should consider himself lucky to even be raised under his roof had committed such a grave offense. He was lucky to not be thrown out for that. Watching Elliot and making sure he wasn't just his own idea, but an obligation that had been verbally beaten into him. The implication was always that, if he didn't, he'd have hell to pay. That was the bit that didn't need to go said, though. Isaac didn't need to give Terrence the time of day anymore, especially not when he was having a really special meal with a really special person. He tried to force away the brief discomfort that flashed in his eyes, even as the memory sunk its talons in.
He decided to focus on Maia's comment instead. "Yeah, we always try to fight side by side when we can," Isaac explained. "There's really nobody I could trust more in a fight. Its one thing to have someone fighting with you. It's another to have someone fighting with you when you've been on the same wavelength for almost 10 years." Since Elliot as walking and talking, the two were the best of friends. Even if jealousy and parental favoritism brought tension sometimes. Lots of times.
"Do you have anyone you've been that close with?" Isaac asked, curious. Not everyone had siblings, but everybody had someone they were petrified by the mere thought of losing.

It was admirable how much Isaac cared about his little brother. Maia was almost a little jealous to be an only child in situations like that. But, not all families were this close, anyway. Then again, maybe it was just because of the type of person that Elliot was. Even Kuu seemed to want to constantly be there for the boy! His tamer was a little worried that the fox may even prioritize the spirit user over her own well being. It was hard to tell some days! Then again, did Kuu even have priorities?
With the question posed, the girl's lips pressed tightly together. Amber eyes glanced about the room, though looking at nothing in particular. After a short silence, there was a hum and the questioning answer of, "Kuu?" Well, they certainly weren't always on the same wavelength! But, in a way, it seemed that the two were close enough that they could often tell what the other was thinking. Even the rookie's questionable antics were somewhat expected on most days. But, if anything fell apart, she found that the first one that her mind went to for some form of assistance would be her Digimon. Was that a fair answer, though? To top it off, she still wasn't even sure of Kuu's loyalty toward her. Sure, he seemed like he would pick her in most situations, but would he ensure her safety over others?
"I, uh, might have a friend from America like that?" That didn't sound so certain! "I guess I don't really know." Well, at least nobody could say that the girl wasn't honest. She could have even made up a person to make herself look better, but there was no real point. And, why lie to Isaac, anyway?

It was refreshing to hear that, despite all of the times they seemed to wear on each others' nerves, Kuu and Maia were able to make a pair on that kind of level. Especially since they were Digimon and partner, which meant them not being on the same wavelength could lead to death or worse. More interesting to Isaac was what Maia had to say next, though. Even if not on the exact same level as a decade-long bond of brotherhood, having such a friend sounded wonderful! It made Isaac a little envious, even if he wondered why. With a brother like Elliot, did it matter nearly as much that he didn't have so many friends?
Still, it must've been hard having her so far away in America, especially if they were so close before. "That's awesome! What are they like?" he asked. Any friend of Maia's was a friend of his, after all. Now was as good of a time as any to get to know more about them. Besides, today was a day for him to learn more about Maia. Even with all the arcades, and chaos, and delicious sushi, finally getting the chance to sit down and talk to somebody so special was really the highlight of his afternoon.
Wait, delicious sushi. It was all almost gone! The two must have been talking for a really long while. It was amazing how time flew when spending it with somebody so great. He took a cursory look at the menu, part to hide his sudden reaction and part because, despite his eager eating of the sample platter, he was still really hungry. "Any kind of dessert you want?" he asked. Something gave Isaac the feeling that Maia was a bit of a sweet tooth.
Speaking of sweet tooths, what was just giant dessert platter being carried past them? Somewhere, Elliot's wallet was weeping.

Taking a moment to do the math, which was really simple when she thought about it, Maia glanced at the table, then back to Isaac. "Actually, I've been friends with her for ten years," the girl gave a small smile. She didn't want to discredit a decade long relationship with the boy's brother, either. After all, that was a way stronger blood than just friends! They literally grew up together! To add to that, Maia was a little older, so it was easier to have that time with another person.
Amber eyes shifted around the room, trying to think of some sort of descriptor for her friend. Oh, she was awful at this! "She's, uh, smart," the tamer began, still wracking her brain. "And an awful influence." Well, at least there was no sugar coating involved here! But, when talking about that close of a friend, did anyone really need to sugar-coat? "But she means well." That was probably the best that anyone was going to get out of Maia as far as explaining another person went! "I'm bad at this," the blonde admitted, with a small laugh, "I can't explain people very well." At least she had tried. But, it really didn't feel like a very good description for a person!
...Oh! Dessert? That made for a great distraction from the girl's distress. At least Maia hadn't eaten too much of the sushi to have room for such an option! Though, at the same time, she didn't want to kill Isaac's wallet. "I don't know," the blonde started, pensively reading the menu. "Does anything look good to you?" Hah! Perfect way to not have to make a decision on something like that! Now, the girl wouldn't feel awful regardless of the decision that was made!

Ten years too, huh? That was a huge milestone. Isaac was glad that Maia was able to be close to someone for such a long period of time. Even if you didn't have a sibling, it was the kind of long bond that everyone deserved to have. Frankly, he'd lucked out with Elliot. If he didn't have his little brother, would he have known anyone long enough to be so close to them? He smiled as he listened to Maia describe her friend. Or, at least, as she attempted to do so.
"That's okay. I'm crap at it too," Isaac admitted. Elliot was so much better than him when it came to words, to the point where it was almost a little embarrassing. He didn't think Maia did half bad at it, although she was pretty vague overall. "Awful influence, though? Can't say I saw that one coming." Maia didn't seem like the kind of person that participated in any of the usual awful influence activities. If this friend wasn't a great influence, she sure didn't seem to be accomplishing much influencing. Unless halfway through this date, Maia would end up dragging him off to some crazy underground rave.
Maia proved to also be pretty bad at influencing things, as she answered Isaac's question with yet another noncommittal response. He was starting to wonder if he should just be making the decisions from here on out, when most of her responses boiled down to "I dunno, you decide." He perused the dessert menu, eventually noticing something nice and familiar. Ice cream! Who didn't like ice cream? "I'm good for some ice cream, if you are," he said, hoping that she'd at least weigh in with her preferred flavor. Picking ice cream flavors for someone was a minefield he very much wanted to avoid navigating.
