((Bits Please))
Another day, another hunt. Phelesmon stalked his latest victim- A young human, with a pair of Digimon partners. For one so young... Oh, the anguish in his soul could be tasted from here! So he stalked, and he waited... And was rewarded. The boy slept alone... Well, two rookie pipsqueeks didn't count. Their souls had so little trauma, he could barely see them. He'd take them anyways, of course, but it would be barely worth the effort put in. Ah well, the important thing was keeping them from interrupting his ministrations on their Tamer.
"Nightmare Mist." The devilish Digimon made an action as if blowing a smoke ring, which in essence, he was. A glittering smoke ring which would settle over the sleeping trio. Within, their sweet dreams would turn to their greatest nightmares- Destroying them with their own personal trauma, until they would take anything- Even a deal with the Devil, to be free. So long as nothing interrupted, of course- But who possibly could?
It was dark. A scream of pain. A familiar one. Her own. And in the distance... A broken figure, held in the jaws of a much larger beast. She knew this scene- Her greatest failure. Leaving Kai a broken body, and her a broken heart. But where was Shiro? And Tomomi?! They had saved the day- Where were they!? She couldn't move! Kai...! But she was powerless to do anything as the boy's body slipped down the wolf's gullet. But it was no wolf. The one eating Kai... Was her. And then she knew no more.
Kai didn't know where he was. There was no light, but it wasn't dark. At least, he didn't feel like it was dark. Just... Empty. That if there were anything there to see, he could see it plain as day- There was... Just nothing to see except himself. It was weird. Like a dream... Only... real? He tried pinching himself. It hurt. You can't feel pain in a dream, right? So what had happened? And where were Kuro and Shiro?
Suddenly, in the not-darkness, a form took shape. At first it was only vaguely humanoid... But soon, it was clear. It was Kai. Or... Something very approximate to him. As he stared into the not-quite a mirror... He couldn't quite place what was wrong with it. Perhaps it was the lack of a face. Or maybe the way it flickered, as if it had bad reception. But soon it spoke- A mouth opening where none had been before.
"Hello, Kai."
Kai stared in shock for a moment, then did what anyone sensible would do. He shouted, "Wha... What are you!?" It was very rude, and the not-Kai shook his head and waggled his finger. "Tut tut, Kai. Didn't our mother teach you better than this? But no matter. For, you see... I am you. And you cannot escape me." And Kai knew it spoke the truth.
The creature flickered for a moment, then suddenly was no more than a few inches from Kai. It whispered in his ear. Whispered, "I know everything, Kai. Everything you've ever regretted. Wondered. Feared. Hated. Loved. Lost. Everything." And suddenly, it was back where it started. The real Kai, though he was certain the shadow would contest that fact, was certain of only one thing. He had no idea what was going on. And that scared him more than anything the creature said.
The creature twisted, morphed... Took a new shape, just as familiar. Scout Evans, speaking in Kai's voice. "You know no one would actually be your friend, right?" Morph to Maia Quinn. "Being neighbors doesn't mean anything, you know." Haruki Yuuto. "You know we're only with you to make fun of you later." The three faces merged into one, a hideous amalgamation. And it laughed. Laughed so hard that Kai was certain his ears would burst.
And it was gone. Standing in its place- Renji Haimura. Kai's older brother. "Let's play a game, shall we?" Renji asked. He spoke in his own voice, not in Kai's. "Of course, I'll win. I always win, you know. No matter how hard you try. Do you know why that is, Kai?" He stepped forward, and grinned broadly at the boy. "It's because you're a loser, Kai. Always were, always will be. And no matter how hard you try, that won't change."
"C'mon, sis! Wake up and play!"
You know, Kai, you shouldn't even be here." Renji indicated everything around him. Not that there was much to indicate, in this empty world. "The Digital World isn't the place for you, Kai. You know that. Why did it take so long for Kuro and Shiro to find you after hatching? So long they were nearly Rookie already, without a tamer? Everyone else you know was simply given their partner- Wasn't that neighbor of yours specially mailed hers? " Renji spoke true. Kai's greatest fear centered around this
"That egg hatched in my room, Kai. And if you'd gone in there before you nearly got yourself killed... You would have found this." And Renji raised Kai's digivice in his hand. Kai immediately reached for it... But knew he would not find it. A second dark shape formed behind Renji. Very dark. So dark that Kai immediately recognized it as Kuro's Champion form, Kuromon. "This is my partner, Kai. Not yours. You just held onto her, for a while. Here, let me prove it." And Renji raised his Digivice.
There was no odd display, like when Kai digivolved Kuro to ultimate. Nor was Shiro there, digivolving with her. And when she was Yinmon, it was a pure form- None of the white markings that marred her when Kai was behind the Digivolution. It was true. It was all true- Every fear Kai had ever had about this was right. He was not Kuro and Shiro's partner- Just a human who happened to be with them. As always... It was Renji. Renji was the better one. Always and forever.
He didn't even resist as Kuro took him in her jaws. And then he knew no more.
"C'mon! Wake up!"
What was that irritating voice? Couldn't it tell she was trying to sleep...? "Wake up!" The voice insisted, again. "What!?" She snapped, at the irritating voice. "Let's play!" Something was so, so almost familar. She just couldn't... Quite... Place it. "C'mon, sis! Let's go! We've got plenty of time!"
Sis...? Why was this voice calling her 'sis'? But to heck with it. Kuro opened her eyes, to the sight of a white Digimon. A so, so familiar one- One she still couldn't place. Uggh. Her head hurt. Where was she. And where was... Huh? Wasn't... there someone? Someone she was supposed to be with? There was an ache in her heart. Why was that? And who was the white Digimon? Why did he call her sis?
"I know! Let's go wake up Kai! He can play too!"
Who... Was Kai? The ache in her heart panged, as if... There was something she was forgetting. Something important. Something... About Kai? The white Digimon was already bounding off. If she wanted answers... Kuro would have to follow. And so she did. But no matter how long she followed, it felt... As though she never got anywhere. It was quite strange. Why was that?
Shiro didn't quite get it. Kai and Kuro wouldn't wake up! He wanted to play! Maybe he could find a friend elsewhere! Shiro ran off, completely disregarding the strange fog overhead. But for some reason, there wasn't anyone. Dejected, he turned around to head back. Maybe now Kuro and Kai would wake up! But that never became a question, because on his way back.... He spotted someone!
"Wanna play, mister?" Shiro asked Phelesmon, who jumped backwards in shock.
"Wha... How are you awake! You should be trapped in your worst nightmares!" Phelesmon exclaimed, too startled to even lie. Shiro just looked at him curiously. "Nightmare? What's that? Can you eat it?" Phelesmon took another step back, Shiro stepped forward. The mist creeped around the pair.
"Y'know, mister. I don't get a lot of things." Shiro said. If Kai were awake, he would have marvelled that Shiro recognized that. "Kid... A Nightmare, it's your worst fear, come to life, capiche?" At this point, Phelesmon didn't even care. He just wanted the kid to go back to sleep, so he could have that delicious soul. In fact, the other soul had become even juicier! He knew the nightmares would do the trick! But it would all be for naught if this kid screwed everything up. He took another step back.
"Oh! I get it now! No wonder I'm not trapped- Shiro's not afraid of anything! What are you afraid of, mister?" Phelesmon was left flabbergasted. Even the most courageous man was not without fear. Was this... Shiro, simply on another level of idiocy from anything he had ever encountered before? Inconcievable! He took another step back. After all- This was his worst fear. A Digimon that his control over fear could do nothing to. And this time, when Shiro stepped forward... He grew.
Yangmon towered over Phelesmon, much as he towered over Kai. He looked down at the other Digimon, and thought for a moment. Then he spoke. "Y'know, mister- I'm hungry."
And Phelesmon knew no more.
