Not a Roadside Barbeque [Maia]

Ah... now this was a much better scene than running away from a dragon in the middle of a dense forest. It was a nice, clear, warm evening in these grassy hills, not a single dangerous monster as far as the eye could see. In the distance, the wail of a passing Trailmon screeched by, the smoke from its engine marking the only cloud in the sky. Peaceful places like this were all too rare in the Digital World...
... And Ami was willing to take full advantage of it. Only a few yards off the beaten path (quite literally a tempered dirt trail), the girl and her partner, a yellow bunny, had set up a tent and a fire-pit, a few rocks dragged along to make proper seats. And from the fire, the delicious scent of a roast filled the air, Ami carefully stirring a pot, the rabbit sniffing at the contents.
"Oh, look at you. Setting up all this in a little over an hour? You've been getting good at this!"
"Oh, hush." Pushing the Digimon playfully away, Ami gave a small grin. But the bunny wasn't done, oh no: "Oh, I mean it! You're far from the helpless girl you were when I first met you. So... you pass, I guess!"
"Oh, really... quite a lot of snark coming from a little bunny rabbit, yourself, Valeria." Chuckling, the girl just shook it off, as Valeria gave a huff and crossed her arms.
"You try to be polite... well, is it about ready, at least?"
"Five minutes. Has to settle, just a bit..."

So far, the day had gone relatively uneventful. This was an accomplishment, as far as Maia was concerned. After weeks of being chased, attacked, lost, and caught in an avalanche, it was the best day exploring this stupid world that the tamer could ask for! At least this exploration hadn't involved being potentially injured by anything. Then again, thinking that way always seemed to backfire.
"Where you wanna go now, Maia?" the Kudamon sprawled across her shoulder questioned, cheerfully. Yellow eyes darted around the area, trying to find another trail for the duo to take. Alas, it seemed that this was the main one!
The sound of a Trailmon served as a reminder of their eventual destination. "Home," the blonde shrugged, throwing a glance to the white and purple fox. "I don't need Mom interrogating me if we get home too late." What was she supposed to say? 'Oh, I was just exploring an unknown world full of dangerous monsters by myself. Don't worry, they didn't try to eat me today'? That wouldn't fly! Chances were, her dad would find some sort of excuse for her if the teen arrived home too late. Though, dad-excuses weren't much better.
While, at first, the rookie let out a groan, it was cut short. Black tipped ears twitched, as his nose lifted to the air. "Mmm," the Digimon hummed, seeming to zone in on a specific smell.
"Kuu," the tamer warned, "what are you-"
And he was off!
The Digimon spun off of Maia's shoulder, dashing down the path. Ah! Couldn't he have waited? But, no, the little pipefox was just too fast! How did something with only two legs move that quickly? This spelled all sorts of problems. Why did Maia have to jinx the day by thinking about how well it had gone? She should have waited until they'd gotten home! Still, if the smoke from a fire was any indicator, at least she could tell where the rookie was heading.
Bounding far ahead of his tamer, he would reach the little camp long before Maia would ever hope to arrive. Oh! People were here! Or, really, person-about-Maia's-age and bunny-mon! "Hello, strangers!" Well, at least he said hello before becoming potentially dangerously close. Hopefully they were friendly! Who was Kuu kidding? Everyone was friendly! Unless they weren't. "What smells good? Can I sniff it?" At least he wasn't asking to eat it! Yet!

"Alright. Well, I guess I'll-"
Valeria was about to say 'kick back for a bit', but apparently, it wouldn't be that simple: right then, there was quick rustle in the grass underneath, much stronger than just a gust of wind. The bunny's ear twitched, tilting her head, looking over as a whitish-blur came to a halt in front of them. Before them was... some sort of fox with front legs, but no back legs, and some purple magic markings on it? It got a curious look from Ami, as Valeria stood up, a generous smile on her face. "You're a friendly one, aren't you?"
"Friendly indeed." Taking out her Digivice, Ami gave the little guy a quick scan. Apparently it was a 'Kudamon', a Holy Digimon? It was the first one that she saw in a while, that didn't seem to fit the mold. Well, at least it wasn't trying to attack them. But just what was he-
Ah! It was drawn by the smell!
"Well, that will depend on-"
"Alright, just make sure you don't burn yourself, its hot. And its stew." For the moment figuring it to be a wild Digimon, Ami stood up with a smile, crouching in front of the smaller Digimon. "I'm Ami, nice to meet you. And over there is Valeria."
"Hmph... you don't let me sniff." Valeria huffed.
"You have a bad record with pots." Chuckling back, Ami walked to the pot, taking a small bit out with a ladle. She knelt down, offering the bit for Kuu to sniff, even taste if he wanted! Heck, why not have another around the campfire? The bunny looked on with a smile...
... That was, until she saw another shadow cast over the camp. "Heads up, Ami, I think we got one more!"

Hearing things about being friendly, the Kudamon chirped an, "I like friends!" Friendly meant they could be friends, right? Who was he kidding? Everyone was his friend! Even that angry spider from, like, two weeks ago! They could totally be friends! Oh, except she died. He'd have to figure out what her smaller forms were, to go see if they could be buddies. Not that his tamer would ever allow that! These new friends would do, instead!
Seeing the Digivice, Kuu tilted his head. It wasn't like he'd never seen one before! Why act so surprised? But, then there was an okay to sniff the stew! "What's stew? Is it food?" Well, it had better be! Considering that the pipefox seriously wanted to taste test it! "But, burning stuff's fun," he pointed out in an oddly innocent voice. Well, he didn't know any better! All he'd ever seen were contained fires! How could he burn himself with soup? Was it like the hot marshmallows? If it was, it was still worth it!
"I'm Kuu!" the pipefox introduced, starting to add, "and th-" before he looked behind him. Oh. Maia wasn't here yet. "Oh well! Stew!" His tamer wouldn't appreciate the sniffs, anyway! With a ladle of stew in front of him, though, he had a hard time not just scarfing it. But, he remembered being told that he was rude too much. What was polite? "Can I try?" Asking seemed to always be the right ticket! After all, if he wanted more stew afterward, he'd better be nice!
But, ears flattened with the announcement of more company. Aw, she was already here? If only the fox had four legs! Then, he'd have really outrun her! Oh well! Within seconds, ears were twitching, awaiting being scolded for running off again.
Sure, enough, it was Maia walking to the camp. She'd given up properly chasing the rookie after a couple of minutes, hoping that he wouldn't run past whatever was causing the smoke. As luck would have it, he had stopped, and was... eating? What? While eyes initially bore into the back of Kuu's head, lips parting to speak, she seemed to second-guess the course of action. At least nobody looked angry, right? Well, aside from a mild irritation from the tamer that had lost her partner temporarily.
Letting out a sigh, the blonde tried not to let the frustration seep out into her words. "I'm sorry," she started, making a motion to Kuu. "He's not causing you problems, is he?" Maia needed a leash for him!

"Well, its not fun when you're the one burning." Rolling with Kuu's logic for the moment, Ami kept a polite smile on her face. Quite honestly, this little guy was cute! She had nothing against having him along on the ride for a while, or at the very least, another dinner guest. She was about to answer the question he had on the stew, but it was right then when Valeria cut in.
And to their surprise? It was another tamer! It was clear enough to see what had happened, after a moment: Kuu's ears were down, and it looked like it took this girl all the control in the free world to not up-and-scold her partner right then and there. Fortunately, this didn't turn into a fight, and as Maia apologized, it was all Ami could do to stifle a laugh. "Oh, no problems at all. But he is quite a handful, isn't he?" Letting out a chuckle, she looked up, giving a welcoming smile to the other girl.
"I was the cute one..." Mumbling under her breath, Valeria turned to face Maia with a smile. "Well, nice to meet you! I'm Valeria, and she's my partner, Ami." Keeping her tamer's politeness from a moment ago, the bunny turned to Ami.
"Yes, nice to meet you. Well, we were just setting up to eat. If you want, you and your partner could join us. Always nice to get to know, well, 'another one', if you catch my drift." It wasn't every day that they bumped into a tamer, and at this rate? Smiles and good intentions were always a good bet! "How about it?"
"And now its a crowd." Valeria said that playfully, giving a smirk. "So, what's your name?"

Kuu bet it could be fun if he was burning! Lynxmon did it all the time! And, he looked like he was having fun during all of it! Who was going to be able to convince the fox that this wasn't how he would work, too? Ha! Good luck! After all, the little Digimon had plenty of dreams! Maybe, being on fire was one of them? At least he hadn't vocalized this desire quite yet, so it was still in the air.
"A handful is one way to put it," the girl admitted, still assessing the situation. Did her partner seriously run off just because he smelled food? He hadn't even had most soup or stew-like edibles yet! How did he know that he could actually eat them? Then again, socks were on the rookie's menu too frequently to really consider what he thought food was.
Hearing the introduction, Maia was about to speak, before hearing the offer from Ami. Kuu turned wide eyes to his tamer, bounding over to her feet, "we gotta stay! Food's great! People are," he paused, thinking, "also great! It's gotta be an amazing idea if there are two greats in it!" Ah, the Kudamon's logic was flawless as ever!
While the blonde wasn't quite as interested in agreeing, simply from irritation with the fox, she also seemed to be a pushover in this regard. Plus, she was getting kind of hungry. "Well, we don't want to intrude," she started, rubbing one of her arms nervously. "But, if you don't mind," Maia smiled, trying to avoid the potential of growing uncomfortable. "I have a feeling it would be hard to drag Kuu away without trying your food, anyway." This was incredibly true! Kuu would have fought his tamer to at least taste the delicious stew!
Hearing the crowd comment, Kuu tilted his head, "crowd is just a lame word for party!"
To actually answer the question, the girl quickly replied with, "I'm Maia. I'm guessing you already know Kuu's name." Turning to look at his tamer again, the digimon nodded rapidly. Everyone knew his name. Always. He made sure of it! "It's nice to meet both of you."

These two were just opposites, weren't they? The outgoing, eccentric Kudamon seemed like a creature in complete contrast to Maia... or perhaps Digimon were all just a little crazy in the head in their own right? Based on Ami's track record with meeting Digimon partners for the past couple of weeks, perhaps this wasn't too far from the truth!
Well, that was a thought for another time. Right now, it was time to be a host, and though there was a bit of convincing involved (mostly from Maia to herself, it looked like!), it looked like the two were going to be staying, for at least a little bit. "Yeah, he's been quite eager to try it. It should be ready any moment now." On that note, Ami returned to her pot, stirring the contents once more to keep it from settling, which would make the top part just an unappetizing-looking skim.
"Ah, nice to meet you too, Maia! You and Kuu." Even if he was being a bit of a nutball and was doing a little too well at getting her tamer's attention. Oddly, Kuu made her just a little more polite than usual, earning a raised brow from her partner standing just a little bit away. What was this, some jealousy brewing? It would have been cute, if it wasn't, well, her own Digimon.
"Alright then!" All too willing to cut into that slight tone, Ami gave a nod. "This should be good to go! Ah, Maia, don't be shy. Help yourself, get what you like." It wasn't anything fancy: aside from the ladle and a few of Ami's own cooking tools, everything else was fairly compact: thick, paper bowls that served as more fuel for the fire afterwards and similar (albeit plastic) forks and spoons were available, Ami handing one over to Maia. And of course, they didn't overcook: though there would be enough for the four of them, perhaps a bowl-and-some-change each, there was no point in leaving too much waste. But for campfire stew, it came out rather well: a mix of curry powder, beef, and a mix of spices from the Digital World gave it an almost earthy tone.
It wasn't perfect, of course, but it was clear that Ami had been at this game for a while! Once everyone was settled around, they would be able to start digging in, Valeria already starting on a piece of green pepper.
"So," Ami turned to face Maia, "How long you been around here? Don't think I've seen you around before."
"Yeah... where'd all these new ones come from?" Valeria chuckled, but she had a point: first Kai, now Maia. This world was bigger than they had thought!

"Food's great!" Kuu nodded, looking at his tamer, then at the pot of stew. It smelled great, too! The little fox was bouncing in circles, hopping to and around his tamer, then to the bunny-mon. "D'you like to play?" That would be a random question, if it wasn't coming from the Kudamon. His life goal was to play! Or, was it to become a ninja? It was hard to tell sometimes. At least his tamer knew that there was no way he'd ever achieve the latter dream. He was just too loud!
Hearing that the food was ready, the tamer took the offered bowl, "oh, thank you," she smiled. At least the other duo seemed to be really friendly! Or the food was poisoned. But, that didn't seem likely! Despite there seeming to be plenty of stew, the girl still didn't take too much. After all, that would just be rude! Kuu bounded over to Maia, pawing at her leg while she got her food, and followed, weaving between feet, when she stepped away to find a good spot to eat. The Kudamon sure acted like a cat sometimes! This was his begging-for-food tactic! Once she had sat down, the pipefox was on her lap in seconds, staring at the bowl.
Trying a bit of it first, Maia looked almost surprised. "This is pretty good," she complimented. Well, she hadn't really had stew over a fire before! What was she supposed to expect?
While one might find it weird to share their food with their pets, the tamer didn't even seem to notice as Kuu stuck his face into the bowl, taking a mouthful, before sitting upright. The rookie simply sat there for a moment, wide-eyed, before swallowing the substance. The silence caused his tamer to look down, trying to figure out if he was disgusted or in love. "This," he paused, licking his mouth to try to get some of the remnants off, "is amazing! Stew's great! We gotta eat this all the time!" Well! Apparently it was the latter! "Think stew and cookies would taste good together?" No. No, they probably wouldn't.
"Around the Digital World?" Maia had to pause to think about it. Sure, she had Kuu for quite a while before coming to the alternate world, so it was hard to keep track! "I think a couple months ago. But, it's been four since we became partners." Noticing that Kuu was staring at her, with ears flat, she had to assume she had said something that had offended. "What?"
"You're bad at remembering stuff," he pointed out, with a puff. Oops. Maybe her math had been wrong! Had it been longer than four months? Or less? Knowing the Digimon, he may have been talking about something completely unrelated, even! "I'm going to eat all the stew now. 'Kay? Thanks," he mumbled, before shoving his nose back into the bowl. At least he had used manners!
Well, time was weird anyway. Who needed to keep track of those kind of things? Attention turned back to Ami. "How about you?"
Kuu seemed to be more interested in the comment from Valeria, instead, lifting his head up as he inhaled more food that wasn't even chewed properly. "New ones? Who's new? Do I know them? I like knowing people!"

Yes, perhaps Kuu was a little too friendly. Even Valeria, usually a jokester, was put on her back foot at Kuu's forwardness. Did she like to 'play'? Play what? "I guess? Playing can be fun?" Valeria didn't know how to answer, and the entire display just brought a smile and a chuckle to Ami's face. It was so rare to see the ol' Val like that, so the girl just couldn't help it!
But soon, they mellowed out just a bit, passing out the stew. And as everyone took their first tastes, it became apparent:
The food was a hit! Well... at least with the enthusiastic nutball of a fox!
Honestly, Ami wasn't expecting too much out of this. She wasn't a slouch at cooking - far from it, coming from a family of bakers - but she had to work on the cheap end. It was what the girl had come up with, that both Ami and her partner had liked, so Maia's genuine reaction brought a small smile to Ami's face. "I'm glad. I can show you how we toss it together, if you want." Kuu's reaction brought another chuckle from her: "And it looks like you might have to, if he's that keen on it."
But if there was any sufficient distraction for Kuu, it was food. With him preoccupied with the food (mostly, at least), Ami kept her attention on Maia, taking a bite of her own stew as the girl pondered the question. "Ah, that short?" She didn't seem surprised, not after meeting the last one. Kuu's disagreement was met with a kind shrug. The details themselves weren't that important, after all. With the question returned to her, Ami turned to face Valeria.
"I want to say... two years?"
"Something like that? The clocks in your world are weird, Ami, but its definitely been an age." That comment earned a flick of the ear, Ami giving a shrug. "Yeah, we've seen the thick of some things. Took a break for some studying, and just got back to this. And wow, did I miss this place..."
"Hm? Ah, if its just two months, you might know them, actually. I think it was... Kai, Shiro?"
"And Kuro, yeah. Helped me out of a jam with some rampaging dragon. Kind of a weird one, if you ask me."
"Oh, more than that. Did you see how he- mmph!" Valeria's tactless comment was shut out, with Ami's heavy hand on the top of her head, muffling it out. "Pay her no mind, please. Sometimes she forgets herself when she talks."
"Gah!" Pushing the hand away, Valeria crossed her arms and turned her head. "Hmph, fine! You're boring anyways."
"Eheh... mine's a handful, too."

With the offer, Maia nodded. "Yes, please. If I don't learn how to make it, he'll probably try to find you all the time to make him more." And, then, the tamer would be forced to chase her stupid Digimon all over the place, while he tried to sniff out the other duo! That would be awful! The girl didn't really want to consider this as a possibility, despite the rapid nodding motion that the Kudamon was making. Oh, no. Was he agreeing that he'd actually find Ami for more? Hopefully, Maia could pull off making this stuff!
Was it really that short of a time? The tamer felt like she had been with Kuu for far too long! Then again, maybe it was just because of how tiring the fox could be. And all of the terrifying things that could happen in just a short time. Considering the perspective of... wait, what? Two years? Maia had to pause to think about that. "Wait, really? The longest I've ever heard of was nine months." So far, Shi had held the record of 'longest time tolerating Digimon', but it seemed that there was a new winner! "Maybe after two years, I'll actually like this place," the girl mumbled under her breath. Chances were, she'd still lack the fondness of this world that her Digimon strongly wanted her to have.
Familiar names had been dropped, causing the blonde to pause again, while Kuu choked on his food. Getting a helpful pat on the back from Maia, the fox began to flail his paws, finally succeeding in swallowing his bite. "You know Shiro? He's the best! I wanna be just like him! We're gonna adventure! And stuff!" Forget about Kuro and Kai! Shiro was where all the fun was at!
Pushing the bowl of stew in front of Kuu's face, the little Digimon looked at his tamer, the food, then at Valeria. Finally, it seemed the food had won, as he shoved his face back into the bowl. This gave Maia another moment of silence, along with a chance to talk. "Kai's our neighbor. And, the first person with Digimon that I met." Thinking about the dragon comment, it made Maia wonder. "Dragon? That's," she paused again, trying not to be too rude about asking. "That's not what put him in the hospital a while back, was it?" After all, it wasn't like she ever got the story about what had happened there! It had looked like something tried to eat him! That had better not have been a dragon! What the heck was wrong with that boy? On top of that, if it wasn't an injury from the dragon problem, that meant that he was doing a lot more stupid things than anyone should be.

"Alright, I'll be sure to at least write it down." Well, with how they met at the spur of the moment, that was perhaps all Ami could guarantee about being able to share about the recipe. And Ami knew that this would definitely take Maia a bit of practice: heck, it took Ami a few tries, and she was the one who actually knew how to cook!
And as for the rest of their conversation, Ami gave a smirk. "I know a few who've been doing it a bit longer than me; there's actually a few more tamers than you'd expect. Well, than I'd expect, actually."
"Eh, still no more than would fill maybe a block at Terminus. At least, I don't see you humans enough to get used to having you all around." Fair enough, through it still earned a rough scratch on her head, to rough up the bunny's fur: "Ugh, stop, you're messing it up!"
"Oh, you make anything work." Passing it off, taking another bite, she listened as Maia went on. So she did know Kai - a slight surprise - and knew him enough to be worried about him! Valeria cut in: "No, I don't see how that would have done it, unless he just freaked out under stress-"
"-Actually he said something about having his arm broken, earlier? Like, before we ever met." Silencing her tactless partner, Ami assured Maia of that fact. And after a moment, Valeria just got an 'aha' look on her face. "Oh, yeah..."
"Anyway, I actually got more roughed up from that than he did. Had a medic look over my shoulder, nothing too serious. Kai might have been a hero that day, but not a martyr." That was what Maia wanted to hear, as far as Ami could tell. "Heh. Would be nice to have someone like that to worry so much about, though." Oh, that tone: Ami was definitely implying something with that, Valeria giving her own mean smirk. "My, my. All those knights in shining armor taken already?"
"Please." Letting the joke pretty much stop there, Ami changed the subject: "So where are you two off to? The Trailmon station, Terminus, or somewhere else?"
"Probably wherever her partner runs off to, Ami."
Ami chuckled. There was probably some truth to that!

It didn't really surprise Maia that there were quite a few tamers. "I've been running into quite a few tamers and spirit users lately, it seems," she murmured, thinking about all of the people she had met. It seemed like the majority had some sort of affiliation with Digimon. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing, but sometimes it made her wonder just how out of the loop she had been to this entire world before. How could anyone not notice it when some people carried their Digimon in plain sight? Had she passed by many spirit users? For all she knew, half of her class at school could have some relation to this world!
From every snippet that Valeria threw in about Kai, the girl had to wonder if there was more to the story. What was the bunny monster talking about? The fact that her tamer didn't seem to want to let her discuss it only made Maia more curious, but she kept it under wraps. After all, if Kai wanted her to know about something, he'd tell her, surely. Even though he seemed kind of dodgy about her questions. Hearing the hero part, Kuu felt the need to chirp, "I'm gonna be a hero."
"No, you're not," his tamer quickly shut down. No heroics here! Maia was not getting into that kind of stupidity! Who risked their lives for strangers?
The girl seemed to pause, thinking about the tone that was being used to discuss the subject. "I'm sure he can handle himself, but," the sentence cut short, hearing the partner's addition. Yup, that was what she had thought. "W-we're, uh, no-"
"Isaac is Maia's knight! He promised." Kuu informed, licking his face. "So, you can have Kai as long as I still get to play with Shiro," he added, looking up to the other tamer. "He never has girls over. Gotta be single." Was Kuu seriously trying to convince someone to be interested in their neighbor? What a weird fox!
Still, Maia didn't necessarily appreciate him butting in about Isaac. Flicking his ear, she let out a huff, "do you ever hear what you say?"
To this, the fox tilted his head, debating. "Sure I do! When I'm saying it!" Ah, well, that made sense.
"A-ah. Yeah, we were headed to the station to go home," Maia finally snapped back to the conversation at hand. Valeria wasn't wrong. Most days it was a hunt to keep Kuu in her line of vision! "I figured we hadn't been attacked yet today. Best not to jinx it, so we should go home before something comes along to eat us." That was only half-joking! The tamer seriously didn't want to become digi-food!

"Kuu wants to be a little bit of everything, doesn't he?"
Honestly, as much as Maia quickly shot down the idea, Valeria thought it to be worth a chuckle, and Ami thought it was kind of cute! She almost wanted to say something to encourage him. But then again, with how much of a sprinter Kuu was already, Ami knew that Maia wouldn't appreciate giving him anything else to be hyper about.
Thankfully (or perhaps not), the tone shifted to the talk of the girls' respective shining knights... at least, from the perspective of their Digimon! As soon as Kuu went off on a tangent, as if all it took was his blessing to make these complicated matters come to fruition, Valeria simply couldn't hold it: after a quick hiss of air through her teeth, she broke out into a pure laugh, as Ami gave a sigh. "Not my type, I'm afraid. Good guy, but he has... let's say, 'too much on his own plate', if you get what I mean. He'd barely give me the time of day if I asked, how spaced-out he can be." Unfortunate, really: Ami was sure that there was a good person somewhere in there, but it was caked under layer upon layer of self-loathing and second guessing.
This world seemed to be very hard on some people here. Ami had adapted quite well, considering. "Ah... well, this station runs pretty regularly, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting back. And attacks this close to the trains are very rare: the sounds of train-whistles actually seems to scare a good bit of feral Digimon off."
"Well, yeah! They're giant, living steel bullets that go like, 'vroom' You don't want to be a Digimon on the wrong side of one of them... and Locomon? Yeesh!"
"Which is why we picked this place to camp out." Ami gave a smirk. "You'd be surprised, but a fair bit of this world is just as developed as our own. Wild creatures here learn by habit and generally stay off the main path... well, at least in well-traveled areas like this. On the mountains, you're just pretty out of luck without one of these." Ami gave a pat to Valeria's head.
"Heeeey." Valeria tilted her head, crossing her arms.
"Oh, hush, its a compliment." Ami looked back to Maia, and then towards Kuu: "So... 'attacked yet'? I take it you've had the rough end of things for a while?"

"Everything is great!" Kuu chirped, tilting his head. "I want to have wings, and be a ninja, and a hero, and," the fox trailed off, thinking. There were other things. What were they? The little digimon scrunched up his nose, nodding and shaking his head while mumbling incoherently. What was he trying to establish now? "Socks," was clearly stated, with a nod, before going back to his thoughts.
Hearing Ami's explanation about Kai, Maia found herself nodding. "Yeah, I get that from him, too," she acknowledged. Despite being neighbors, Maia didn't really know too much about Kai, though! He didn't want to discuss himself too much, and when he did, he seemed to panic. The teen couldn't even begin to imagine what problems were swamping the boy's mind. It seemed kind of like a lot of everything.
The insight on why there weren't very many dangers so close to the Trailmon made sense. It actually explained quite a bit! Why hadn't Maia considered that was why she hadn't found many problems in this area? With a smile, the girl looked to Valeria, who either didn't understand the compliment, or it was secretly a jab at something. Thinking about it, she really knew nothing about the bunny monster. But, since it didn't seem to be an enemy toward them, she supposed the curiosity wasn't overly important. Not enough so to rudely point a digivice at someone else's pet.
"We were already in the mountains! It was fun! Maia made the ground get hot!" Kudamon announced, proudly, before looking to his tamer.
"Avalanches aren't fun, Kuu," the teen grumbled, making eye contact with the fox, before looking to Ami to address the question. Though, that may have really been answer enough. "I swear, it was easy sailing for the first month. Now, it's running around like an idiot, trying not to die. Who in the world thinks that throwing kids into dangerous situations, completely defenseless, is a good idea?" Ami had better not try to say that Kuu was the defense! He was not a reliable source of that! "I mean, Digimon can't always protect everyone. What's stopping anyone else from just stepping on the human?"

Well... this took a dark turn pretty quick. On Ami's inquiry of Maia's time in the Digital World, the younger girl gave an emotional answer, going on a rant for how her latest months in the Digital World had been far less than ideal. Giant monsters? Avalanches? Being defenseless in fights?
"Oh, dear..."
"Heh. Hey, we've dealt with all of these things as well! It's not all that bad- mmph!" Valeria's brash words were once again smothered by her tamer's hand, as Ami gave a small smile. "Well. I don't think anyone woke up and had the idea to bring us here. Actually, if I think about it, it might be the world itself that gave us these Digivices. And the more I look at the partners I've seen? There's no way you two were just paired randomly." Ami said that with such calm tone. Was there truth to it? The tamer had no way to prove her words, but there didn't seem to be a hint of lying or uncertainty in her voice. As for her Maia's second question?
"Oh, trust me, I was a mess when I first showed up here as well. Valeria was just dragging me around everywhere. But over time, I learned how to rough it, and learned just what this world had to offer. And the one thing I've learned about working with your partner?" Ami gave a pause, to get the pair's attention. "Its not their job to protect you. We aren't just some battery for them, but we rely on them just as much as they rely on us. You shouldn't be hiding behind him at all, but rather working with him. And if nothing else? All this time walking around will make you really good at running, so just keep yourself in cover!"
The last part was said with a laugh, and with all that, Valeria sighed. "You're a sappy one, you know that?"
"Maybe. Anyway, if your problem is getting in danger, check around the cities a bit more. You might just find something you like to do!"
Hopefully that would help! "And don't be too hard on your partner. The more you directly stand in his way, the more he'll act out."
