Maia listened to Elliot's advice, suppressing a smirk, "you think I get any quiet time?" As far as that went, there was absolutely no silence in the house! If it wasn't Kuu babbling, it was her mother. And when neither of them were talking, it was because her dad was in the room, doing something distracting. If that involved food or breaking something, well, it really varied. On top of that, he wanted to know about her adventures. That was really the least the girl could provide, considering he was allowing his teenage daughter to run around with talking monsters that could potentially shoot lasers from their eyes. He didn't know!
The Kudamon decided to pipe in with a, "noise is great!" Yup, he did think that. It was amazing that she could convince him to keep quiet during classes!
Chances were slim that any of them would adjust to balancing so much of their lives. But, that was okay, right? As long as Maia could pass her classes, and not die elsewhere, all should be fine! Same would go for the brothers, as far as she figured.
The blonde took the offered hand, flashing a smile. "The school's not that hard to figure out," she replied, trying to soften the comment. "Oh. And, you'll really only have to find your homeroom. Teachers move from room to room. Not the students. With a few exceptions, like gym," she added. That had potential to be confusing, depending on the school system in California! But, at least from Maia's perspective, having a different teacher coming into her class to teach a different subject was a little weird. It sure did make finding her classes easy, though.
With a gentle pull on Isaac's arm, she moved to guide them toward the entrance. Even if she was a bad tour guide, at least she knew where the doors were!

"I mean, offer's always open for me to take Kuu to the arcade or something for some fun times," Elliot said, letting Maia do the adding of 2 and 2 on her own. After all, if the source of the un-quiet time was distracted and taken away, Maia could probably just hide from her parents and have a good time. It beat just leaving the poor thing locked in a closet or something like that! Besides, he liked Kuu. The Digimon made Elliot laugh. While Maia might have needed a distinct lack of noise, to Elliot noise was indeed great. Now, as for distracting dads? Isaac would likely be better at that, although it may leave Maia fearing for the boy's safety and well-being.
"Oh, really?" There was a huge departure! Isaac was so used to constantly dashing through the halls to make sure he was getting to all of his classes on time, fumbling with lockers, and peeking in on hallway gossip. It felt like an integral part of school, and it felt weird to have that admittedly frantic social aspect missing. Elliot, on the other hand, looked incredibly relieved. Considering the boy's leg, it was no wonder. Now his biggest school insecurity, the reason why he was dreading junior high, was a complete nonentity. Sweet!
Isaac let himself be led along by Maia. There was something nice about it that he couldn't put his finger on, like he was moving with her instead of just walking alongside her. Besides, it was a sign of faith in her tour guide skills. As he drifted along behind her, he couldn't help but start considering this strange new homeroom system she mentioned. "So, who are your seat partners?" he asked. "What are they like?" It may have sounded like a petty question, but it was an important enough dilemma when you could pick different ones in every class. Here, the people who Isaac sat next to would basically be his first social contacts for life. It was a pretty integral choice!

Throwing a glance to Kuu, the tamer ended up shaking her head. "It's going to sound weird," she admitted, "but, I don't like him being too far away." After all the time she had spent constantly with the rookie, Maia found herself hesitant to go to school, some days, without him. After all, what if something happened and she needed him? Or, what if he broke something while under the supervision of someone else? At least, with the Kudamon in her hands, she was the one holding full responsibility over what he was doing. Even if he did a lot of stupid stuff regardless.
The blonde couldn't really tell if Isaac and Elliot were happy about the homeroom thing or not. It seemed like Elliot was pretty happy about the news. Then again, he seemed pretty happy about school in general. What a strange kid! Then again, everyone liked different things. It just happened that his was class, apparently.
"Seat partners?" Maia threw a glance to Isaac, trying to wrap her head around the term. Did he mean the people that sat by her? "Kyoko, I guess? She's, uh, one of my friends," the girl hesitated. Considering they never changed classes, Maia found it easiest to just socialize with the person next to her. Though, socialize was a questionable term, since she wasn't the one that usually initiated conversation! "I sit near one of the walkways. I don't know the name of the guy on the other side of it," she added, trying to think. Who was he, even? As far as she could think, the person didn't even have a face to place with the desk! Oops. She really needed to pay more attention to the people in her class! But, there were too many distractions!
Deciding that his nose wasn't really something that he wanted to continue licking, the fox on Elliot's shoulder finally piped up with, "Kyoko smells like apples. I like her." Not that he had ever actually met her! But, Kuu's nose was sensitive! Of course he'd know how she smelled. Though, had the Kudamon ever even smelled an apple? Maia hadn't fed him one before! She didn't think they'd had any in the house, either. Weird.
"Anyway," the blonde cleared her throat, trying to distract from how creepy her Digimon was from smelling strangers, "what are your favorite classes?"

Elliot nodded in acknowledgment. Aww, even when she sounded so exasperated by Kuu, she really did care! It was great to see that things weren't too rocky between the two. Elliot just hoped that Maia would be able to focus with him around! "No, that makes sense. It'd be like me without Isaac. It just doesn't work," Elliot explained. Truth be told, there were many days when he wished he had a little bit more independent wiggle room, but the two being a package deal was just part of their time here in Japan by now. He'd carve his own path later, but for now he didn't want to rock the boat too much. Kuu probably didn't have that problem. Kuu most likely made his own time for himself, whether Maia wanted it or not. Sometimes, Elliot wished he could be so bold.
Kyoko was shaped like a friend. Good to know. Maia didn't seem too big on describing people, so Isaac wasn't surprised by her rather laconic answer. At the very least, he hoped he'd be able to find seat partners he could find friends as well. There was a reason why he usually plopped down right in the middle, where he'd be able to chat up a good amount of people without being too far from the blackboard. Elliot, on the other hand, was more of a front seat kid for sure. He usually ended up with the super nerds and the late kids, the only two other types of people that would actually consider such close seats.
"I dunno if I really have any," Isaac admitted, shrugging a little. "When I find something I like it tends to stick with me, but most of the time school's just school. Creative writing's been a big one lately. How about you, Mai?"
"Ooh, I like science!" Elliot chirped as soon as Isaac finished. "And history! And math can be a lot more fun than you give it credit for. And reading. And art. Ooh, there's just so much to enjoy."
If only we all had such enthusiasm.

Little did Elliot know that Kuu made absolutely zero time by himself. In fact, the closest to time alone was when Maia was taking a shower or something! Of course, those seconds were used in devious plots of devouring socks and various other things, but it didn't really matter. The fox had no need to be alone, nor a desire for such! After all, who wanted alone time? "More people all the time is better," the rookie nodded. He actually couldn't imagine Elliot and Isaac not being together almost all the time!
Maia wasn't going to bother describing Kyoko any further. After all, it was inevitable that the brothers would eventually meet her. The blonde had been lucky today, considering there had been other plans. Introducing people could be such a pain. Really, Maia had just taken up one of the few empty seats in the room. It wasn't so much a thing of wanting to pick the seat next to Kyoko out of a desire for friendship! Things just kind of turned out that way.
It didn't surprise the girl to hear that Isaac wasn't so sure about a favorite subject. "Creative writing is always good," she agreed, before hearing Elliot's favorites. Of course he liked everything. "I wish I liked that many classes," the teen smiled, with a shrug. "Art is my favorite, though," she added. Go figure, right? "As long as it's not gym." That was probably pretty obvious, too, though. "I am getting better at running, though," Maia mumbled, under her breath. Who would have thought that Digimon made for a perfect excuse to work out? It was actually making her look a little less awful on the track!

Elliot wasn't too sure about Kuu's idea. People were always great, but sometimes Elliot really wished he could just get away from it all. In a way, it was kind of distressing. He had two whole worlds to explore, and yet nowhere to go when he needed some time away from it all. Exploring a foreign country without his big bro was as stupid as exploring a foreign dimension where everything could kill him in a heartbeat without his big bro. No matter what, going it alone was a lose-lose. Maybe it would be fine if he was just able to stay home, but that wasn't the life Elliot wanted to live. He'd go stir-crazy really quick. Rather than display these worries, he settled for just shooting Kuu a grin. "Yeah. I think you're right on that one," he said, not entirely genuinely.
"Pretty great, isn't it?" Elliot asked in response to Maia's wishful statement. "If I enjoy everything, it makes it less annoying to keep waking up so early. Besides, I'm always learning something new and cool? Isn't that always fun?" It seemed there was a method to Elliot's madness after all. Compared to Isaac, who had to be grumpily rolled out of bed every morning, he was practically as fresh as a vase of daisies. The Digital World had trained both brothers to start getting up at the crack of dawn, though, so maybe they'd be able to adapt much more efficiently to their new schedules.
"Heh, that makes two of us. Being a spirit user makes me feel the burn way less, though, so I'm not sure exactly how much I'm getting out of it," Isaac contemplated. If surface injuries faded away more often than not, so did surface muscle tension. With each fight in the Digital World, Isaac was devoting a ton of energy towards working out a body that wasn't even his. At least he was getting better at conditioning and pacing himself, getting a better handle on the more learned elements of fitness. "I'm just really glad we've all been keeping safe over there. I'd feel awful if anything happened to you two."

Elliot's idea of why to enjoy things didn't entirely make sense to the teen, but she'd take it. If it worked for him, why not? "It's annoying for me to wake up, no matter what. Kuu's taken to licking my face every morning," she grumbled, throwing a glance to the Digimon.
If one could ever say that the fox was grinning, it would be now. "Maia tastes good," was his first defense. This was soon followed with, "And it wakes her up well." That, it did. There was no way his tamer would just stay there and let him drool on her face! "I'm an alarm clock without a snooze button!"
Finally inside the building, Maia began to look around the school. At the entrance was mostly empty lockers, a long hallway leading to several rooms both left and right, along with a wide set of stairs leading upward. "Don't worry about us too much," the girl replied, softly. "You'll end up getting hurt otherwise."
Kuu looked between the two, before adding, "I keep Maia safe just fine! Like, when we were in the ruins and-" there was a pause, as the Digimon decided this story was just too much effort. "Unless Isaac's there, 'cause you're her hero and stuff. I can't get in the way of that kinda stuff!" No, instead the Digimon would just get in the way of everything else in life! Ever!
The blonde looked at Kuu for a moment, with a slightly concerned expression, before just shaking her head. There was never a point in questioning his actions or words. Instead, she would just focus on what was in front of her. "So," she started, "what direction do you guys want to explore first?"

"I'm just kind of a light sleeper," Elliot admitted. "If I end up waking up in the night, that's it. No going back for me. But hey, then I get to help Isaac wake up. I swear, I don't even think Kuu could do it. He's like a rock sometimes." So many incidents in the past. Airhorns going off right next to Isaac's ear. A gentle whack with his walking stick. At one point, physically rolling him out of the bed. He didn't land too great after that one, though, so Elliot stopped trying it. Still, the main point stood; Isaac could be really stubborn and hard to shake when he wanted to be! Sometimes it was almost like he slept twice as hard to make up for lost time.
If only Elliot knew how often Isaac sneaked off to handle personal business.
At Maia's statement, Isaac smiled somewhat wearily. "Elliot's my little bro. Who else is going to look after him?" he asked. Elliot opened his mouth as if to protest, but by then Isaac had already continued speaking. "Besides, you mean a lot to me. I trust you a ton to handle yourself, and I know I can't be around 24/7, but whenever I'm there I gotta at least try to help keep you safe. It's the least I could do for you, and I know you'd always do the same for me." A light blush dusted Isaac's cheek at the admission. When he was an active fighter and Maia wasn't, he felt a degree of responsibility for the girl's health and well-being. At the same time, he knew she had just as much experience as him when it came to Digital World adventures. "I don't think I need to protect you, or anything. I just like knowing I'm fighting by your side."
Directions? Oh no, that was hard! Elliot looked left and right, squinting at signs to try and read them, before eventually pointing to the one with the biggest letters on it. As easy of a way of picking as any, right? "Uh, that way!"

While Elliot was young, Maia still had faith that he was capable of handling himself. After all, he handled himself just fine in the Dark Area. But, she wasn't going to defend the boy if he didn't want it, and Isaac meant nothing bad by it. So what if the older brother was protective? That was a good quality for an older sibling to have!
"Maia can handle herself?" Kuu questioned, clearly not convinced by this. "She needs to be protected, though," the Digimon nodded, reflecting being told multiple times that he had to keep the girl safe. If she didn't need to be protected, there were a lot of different situations that didn't make sense to the fox anymore. "Humans don't come back if they 'splode."
With that final bit, Maia turned to look at Kuu. So, he did understand that people didn't come back from the dead. This was good, considering she hadn't gotten around to properly explaining that entire thing to him. How did someone explain to a creature, that reincarnates, the concept of death being an absolute end?
It posed another question, though, that the Kudamon was going to voice to the spirit users, "wonder what happens if you guys do. Do you think if you die as a Digimon, you'll come back again?" Okay, the phrasing was kind of cringe-worthy. Maybe he shouldn't have asked that. Neither partner nor tamer could imagine the boys knowing an answer to the question, anyway.
"That's a morbid topic," the girl finally voiced, before turning in the direction that was chosen. In fact, it was a topic that Maia would rather not touch on. They were at a school, not a funeral!
Looking around, the tamer wasn't entirely sure what was in this direction, considering there weren't many rooms that she had particularly explored. "Well, the faculty room is this way," Maia murmured trying to think of anything else. "If you need to find your teachers outside of class, there's a good chance they'll be there." What else was this way?

"Well, duh," Isaac said in response to Kuu, as if he asked the most obvious question in the world. "She's resourceful. Brave. Has a great head on her shoulders. If I wasn't able to turn into a Digimon, do you think I'd even half as good a job of surviving the Digital World as she does? Hell no!" Sometimes, Isaac and Elliot were glad they were spirit users and not tamers. The fact that their combined lack of survival skills would buy them maybe three days before being Digimon chow was a major one of those reasons. Maia surviving all of this and still making time, albeit heavily rushed and strained time, for school was part of what Isaac found so amazing about her.
Then Kuu brought up his question. It was something Isaac had actually found himself thinking about, morbidly enough. As far as he could tell, these spirits weren't really part of the usual Digimon rebirth cycle. After all, they were dead Digimon that weren't coming back anytime soon, instead taking on the form of floating rocks that empowered others. When he became a Digimon, and turned into data, was he just melding with the data already located within the spirit? Surely that meant when he died, his data simply degenerated back into the physical spirit totem. Maybe that would be as good as death. Maybe instead he'd simply be trapped inside of the totem, joining the ranks of voices that gave it power and form. Maybe he'd still have consciousness, or maybe he'd just eventually fade away into white noise. If he had enough willpower in his dying moments, could he force the data to reincarnate instead of crystallize back into a totem? It seemed highly unlikely. Permanent death would likely be his lot in life.
Elliot didn't want to think about this. He looked at the faculty room like it was the most interesting room in the universe, trying his hardest to blot out what everyone else was considering. "Oh. Then we probably shouldn't go in here, should we?" Elliot asked, pointing out the obvious so that he could hear his own voice and blot out Kuu's question. "Do you have any favorite teachers?"

"She's not," the little Digimon disagreed, shaking his head rapidly, while using a childish tone. What the fox didn't add was what exactly he was disagreeing to. That was too much effort! Sure, he liked hearing himself talk, but he wasn't going to pinpoint why his tamer wasn't the best ever! She fed him and cared for him, he wasn't going to bash on her squishy human-ness! "She's only got the cards. She doesn't got armor!" If only she did! "Needs heroes!"
Maia threw a glance at the faculty door, before shrugging. "We could, but it's just a bunch of desks and teachers," she pointed out. That wasn't interesting to her! Wouldn't they want to see something more interesting? Then again, what was really interesting in this school? Or any school? School wasn't fun! As far as favorite teachers?
The tamer looked a little sheepish, throwing glances around the hall. "I'm not good with names," she mumbled, trying to think of any of the teacher's names. Oops. She couldn't even think of the homeroom teacher's name! What the heck? How did this girl pass any of her classes? "They all have their perks." That had to be true somehow, right? She hadn't really had any confrontations with any of them! Then again, she didn't talk much, either.
But, trying to think of classes brought up another subject. "Oh! There are after school clubs, too," she informed, trying to think of some of them for examples. Obviously, the blonde didn't know much about the activities! "I don't know if either of you are interested in them, though. I know there's a drama club." That one had to be mentioned!

Isaac had a feeling he and Kuu were just talking past each other at this point. He kept bringing up the lack of armor and protection, and her fragility, while he was looking at far different qualities. He tried to think of a response, but in the end simply settled on a shrug. "I mean, she's a hero in my books," he said. It was a sudden statement, but the more he thought about it the more true he realized it was. She was one of the only people he'd trust Elliot to be alone with in the Digital World, for example. She helped bail him out of trouble when he needed almost as often as he bailed her out of trouble. Both in the digital and real worlds, they excelled at helping one another. Yeah, there was no denying Maia was at the very least his equal, and a hero for sure.
Elliot figured the girl had a good point. As much as he liked school, and giggled about the forbidden nature of the faculty lounge, desks really weren't all that thrilling. It was probably better to go in a more interesting direction, even if it prompted the question as to why Maia even brought them this way in the first place. It seemed like for today, the blind were leading the blind. Equally shocking was the fact that she didn't even know any of the teachers' names, simply waving off the comment and giving a vague, noncommittal response. "Nobody comes to mind?" he asked, heavily curious. It was almost incredulous to the boy. How could she know so little about a school she had attended for so long? Was something going on? Was Maia okay? He could understand her not being an expert, but being completely lost like that just seemed mind-boggling.
At least there seemed to be something the girl was able to help explain. Extracirriculars were a fairly common thing where they were from too, although troubles at home forced the boys to pull back from theirs before they could really put down any roots. Here at their new school, maybe they would have more of a chance of establishing themselves. Alternatively, maybe they'd just be too busy with Digital World business to commit. Either way, Isaac found himself blushing slightly and looking down at the floor as Maia brought up the drama club. Somehow, he knew that one was going to be the first to come to mind. The insecurities he faced still hung over his head, even despite Maia's implicit assurances. He couldn't, could he? Elliot, on the other hand, felt the need to probe a little bit more. "Are you in any of them? Do you have any reccommendations?" he asked.

"Not a hero," cut into the conversation between the two. While sharp, it faded to a softer, less snippy tone by the end of the short statement. Maia wasn't a hero. She didn't want to be a hero. Heroics got people killed. She wasn't willing to be in those shoes. But, she also didn't want to lower the value of what Isaac was saying. It was still sweet to be viewed that way by someone. "I-uh, mean," the tamer started, trying to find a way to put her thoughts into words.
Kuu had this, though! He even put on a robot-like tone for this one! "Maia appreciates your input and will store it for validation at a later point in time!" This earned a very odd look from the girl, as he blinked a few times. "What?" To this, the teen opened her mouth, only to end up sighing and shaking her head. "I don't even know what any of that means!" Probably not. After all, the Digimon kind of just spouted whatever he heard on television.
Still, Maia couldn't think of any of her teacher's names. "Well, there's," there was a pause. Wait. Something was clicking into her head. Was her history teacher actually a woman? Oh, God. She didn't even know the gender of one of them! Were there others like this? Face paled, while trying to think of some sort of response. "I don't think I know my teachers well enough to really like them." That seemed like a good enough answer, right?
At least she seemed a little more aware of the clubs. Maia hadn't meant to embarrass Isaac with the suggestion, however. Without saying anything to the teen, she simply shifted to squeeze his hand. She didn't want to draw attention to the issue, if not needed, but the girl wanted him to know that she was still there, too. Elliot seemed pretty interested, though! "I'm not in any clubs," the tamer admitted. There was no time for clubs! And, she wasn't particularly social! "Uh, the art club asked me to help with some sort of thing they're doing, but I don't think I'm actually going to join after." That sounded like a less lame answer, right?
What other clubs were there? "Photography looked kind of interesting," except Maia had nothing that she would be able to really contribute to that club. What would Elliot be interested in, even? "Cooking club? I know there are a lot of choices." Unfortunately, most of them slipped her mind!

The sharpness in Maia's voice caught Isaac quite off guard. It was also the sign that he should probably shut up and stop talking about this now. He continued to look down at his feet, unsure what exactly to say at the moment. Judging by the confusion in Maia's voice as she tried to reword her statement, she wasn't either. And then there was Kuu, continuing to be Kuu. The "I'm actually really smart! Wait, no I'm not" thing was starting to wear a little thin. At some point, the Digimon had to admit that he was keeping something hidden. There was no other way he could be so consistently, well, Kuu.
Elliot still found Maia's confusion somewhat odd, but at least she admitted it instead of trying to put up a false front. "I can get that. It must be tough, especially when you've been so busy," Elliot said in response. After all, this school taught the entire Shibuya area, a huge, crowded district with students of all ages. It was a lot to fit into a single building, much less keep track of. Who was to blame Maia for not being completely on the ball about it all?
One's worries eased and the other's somewhat intensified, the two brothers dropped their respective conversations to listen to Maia talk about clubs. "Had a feeling they'd notice you," Isaac mentioned, smiling a bit proudly at Maia mentioning her scouting at the hands of the art club. "What kind of project is it? Can we see?" he asked. Oh no, here comes the pressure to succeed!
Elliot, on the other hand, was sold at the words "cooking club." "Wait, really? You gotta tell me more!" he said, eyes shining eagerly.

Maia actually had found it a little weird that the art club had requested her help. She generally kept to herself in her classes, so it had been quite the surprise. Still, the teen found herself blushing slightly at the comment that Isaac had made on it. "It's, uh, secret," she smiled, rubbing the back of her neck a little nervously. "It's for a competition they're going to, so they don't want to risk anyone seeing it until it's there." Was it cheating to enlist someone outside of the club? She was kind of an honorary member at the moment. Did that count for anything? Thinking about it, Maia really needed to ask if she was supposed to attend that thing. Hopefully not.
"S'fancy, though!" Kuu needed to inform Isaac. "It's gonna be really colorful!" While his tamer didn't deny this, she didn't confirm the statement, either. "They want her to help with other stuff, too! Like backdrops!" There was a pause, before he inquired, "what is a backdrop?" It seemed that the Kudamon was far more willing to share all of this unnecessary information than Maia was. Of course, what was the point in talking about possibilities, rather than certainties? It seemed like a waste of breath to the tamer. Which was exactly why Kuu would use up his time to discuss it instead!
Was Elliot that into cooking? He looked so excited! "They have a really nice kitchen?" What was she supposed to say about that club? "I think they meet Mondays and Wednesdays. Uh," there had to be more to talk about regarding it, right? "And they enter competitions, too, I think. You'd make really good food." Of course, what cooking club wouldn't make good food?
