Neither of the twin digimon could believe it.
As Bellamy the Impmon and Luke the Elecmon woke from their beds in Colin's room, they were thoroughly unprepared for the event that awaited them. Indeed when Colin and his family suddenly said "Surprise!" as the two digimon entered, both took two steps back in shock, Bellamy accidentally conjuring a fireball and Luke readying his tail feathers for combat. Fortunately neither of them launched their attacks, although in turn they had surprised their surprisers.
"Erm... sorry guys, we won't do that again" Colin said, approaching them. He gave them both a friendly cuddle instead.
"Er, what the hell's goin' on, Col?" Bellamy asked.
"You two don't know?" Colin asked, bewildered. "It's your first birthday!"
Luke and Bellamy blinked at each other with confusion. Yeah that sounded right, they had been partners with Colin for about a year. And boy did they do a lot of things in that time. All those adventures in the digital world, all the trials they overcame, all that havoc they managed to put a stop to on Earth. But... wow, it was a whole year?
"So... we're officially 1 year old now?" Luke asked, grinning. "Heh... I dunno, it feels weird. I mean, Bellamy and I can digivolve to Perfect now, we're stronger than most humans"
"Yeah, tell us about it" said Colin's father. "But... you've done us a lot of favours this year, so, it's only fair you get a day to yourselves to celebrate"
Bellamy grinned as he realized what this meant. Prestige, gratitude, a whole day dedicated to the awesomeness of himself and his brother. Now this was indeed a very pleasant surprise.
Of course, it had been a pretty big year for the both of them, as expected when they agreed to be the partner of a human. He had attempted to keep them secret from his family, but had failed after about 2 weeks. Fortunately Colin's parents were cool enough to let Bellamy and Luke live in their place in secret, as long as they did their share of housework. Which was reasonable. Of course the Impster wasn't going to tell anyone about how he washed dishes or did laundry.
"Congrats, guys" said another digimon in the room. Bellamy and Luke grinned at their friends - Randy the Veemon and Lan the Spadamon. Partners of Colin's elder sister Sophie.
"Heh, thanks" said Luke, rubbing his paws. "So, if this is our birthday party... do we have presents?"
"Of course you do" said Colin brightly, giving them a pair of soft wrapped things. The twins rapidly tore away the paper, and saw two neatly woven sweaters for them to wear.
"That's from us" said Colin's mother. "You might as well put something on. It can be incredibly distracting for the two of you to walk around the house with nothing on"
"Aw, that's a bit harsh, Mrs. J. We've got our scarfs on" said Luke, plucking at his blue scarf.
"Yeah, and besides, the world needs to see these legs" said Bellamy, making a power pose. But the two of them put on their new sweaters anyway. Luke's was green and Bellamy's was blue. "So what else is there?"
The next present turned out to be from Sophie, Lan and Randy. The twins opened them, and Luke gave a gasp as he saw a DVD box-set of his favourite series - Trek Wars.
"Oh my god thanks guys!" he said, beaming at them.
"Bah, sure, ya nerd" Bellamy muttered. But he was pleased to see that he had got a DVD box set as well - "Game of People Being Stupid in a Stupid Medieval Setting with Stupid Things Happening and Written by people who are Stupid to cater for a Stupid Audience".
"HELLO POT, MEET KETTLE" Luke said, loudly pointing at it. Bellamy snickered and patted his back.
"And here's my presents" said Colin, and gave the two of them a pair of pendant charms. Luke's was in the shape of a lightning bolt while Bellamy's was the shape of a flame.
"Aww, that's so nice, Colin, thanks, pal" Bellamy said. He and Luke reached up and pulled him down for a cuddle, until Bellamy whispered in his ear. "Yeah nice try, Col, where's our real presents?"
"I'll give you your new phones later" Colin muttered back. "I can't let mom and dad know I have so much money from doing missions in the digital world, alright?"
"Heh heh, okay" said Luke, satisfied.
"Thanks, pal, we both love ya" Bellamy assured him. With that settled, it seemed that the family would be quite busy today, so they'd simply had a birthday breakfast, rather than waiting until dinner. That suited the twins anyway, they had plans of their own.
A big breakfast was served, consisting of toast, eggs, bacon, sausages, beans and fruit. Luke and Bellamy happily ate what was put in front of them.
The two of them were enjoying the time with their new family. Yeah it wasn't as exciting as it was in the digital world, but, the twins felt like they were a part of this big family. Colin, his elder brother and sister were neat to be around; then there was his sister's digimon, they were good friends. And then Colin's parents were cool too, they always had food ready for them on the table. And lastly, Colin's Aunt... Ms. Irma James. Well... Bellamy found her funny at the very least. Although the rest of the family didn't agree as much.
"So you two are meant to be twin brothers, right?" Mrs. James asked, curiously. "Funny... I just don't seem to see the resemblance"
"It's easy" said Luke after finishing off a particularly tasty slice of bacon. "Bellamy's face looks like my butt".
Bellamy reacted immediately as snickering broke out through the room. "What was that, bunny boy?!" he asked, grabbing Luke in a headlock and rubbing his head playfully with his knuckles.
"Oh no wait, that can't be right" Luke said, grinning as he endured his brother's torment. "My butt's all soft, white and fluffy, while only bad noises come out of Bellamy's face"
"How 'bout I set your butt on fire, eh?" Bellamy asked, conjuring a little flame in his hand.
"But Bellamy, you do that anyway with your cooking" said Luke. By now the whole room was laughing, even Bellamy grinned and let him go.
"Heh, you're alright, Luke" he said, momentarily proud to have such a talented banterer as his brother.
Perhaps all was set for a nice day when they heard a knock at the door. Mr. James grimaced as he stood up to answer it, and lo and behold, it was everyone's favourite drunk aunt.
"Irma, how the hell did you climb up these stairs?" he asked.
"Hell if I know" Ms. James said, staggering into the room. "I got about halfway last night and got the rest of the way up just now. Hiya kids!" she said to them, noticing everyone sitting at the table. "Whose birthday is it? Oh crap, sorry, is it yours Colin? Here, have this" she was about to give him half a bottle of vodka, but Mr. James snatched it away.
"Dear sister, why not sit down in the lounge room?!" he said loudly.
"Why doesn't she go sit in the incinerator?" Colin's brother Riku muttered. Colin snorted with mirth.
"Because with the amount of alcohol in her system she'd burn down a whole city block, Rick" said Sophie.
"Damn it guys I can't eat like this" Colin giggled.
"...Wait a moment!" Ms. James suddenly yelled, staggering back into the dining room. "You two aren't kids..." she pointed at Luke and Bellamy. "And neither are you!" she added to Randy and Lan.
"Irma please, you've just had too much to drink" said Mr. James.
"I know what you are..." Irma said dramatically. "You're Pokemon!"
"Yes, Aunt Irma, that's right" Colin said, exasperated.
"I knew it! Seriously, the moment we all moved to Japan I knew this house would be overrun by those weird virtual reality animals that they have in this weird island! It's Pokemon this, Yu-Gi-Oh that, Yo-Kai Watch this! Ridiculous! It's distracting enough in my classroom that-" Mr. James was leading her to the lounge room as she was talking.
"...So anyway!" said Bellamy. "I'd like to make a toast, if I can" he stood up on his chair. Mr. James returned once his sister was safely unconscious on the couch. Bellamy pulled Luke up to stand with him. "Unaccustomed as I am to public speaking..."
"Ah that's Bullmonsludge, Bellamy, you've got a whole speech ready for when you run for Prime Minister" Luke said. Bellamy ignored him while the others snickered.
"First of all, to this awesome family for taking us in and giving us a great place to live..."
Everyone at the table smiled at this.
"I'd also make a toast to my beloved big brother Luke here. One year ago we came out of the same egg, he got out first, but left all the good looks for me - but he's been my right-hand guy, best friend and a great brother all in one"
"Heh, you have too, Bellamy" Luke said, honestly flattered.
"And lastly, a toast to our partner Colin. He's simply the best thing that ever happened to us. We can never thank you properly for what you've done for us, buddy, but as long as we're still alive, we'll always be there for ya"
Colin was speechless and smiled. There was an outbreak of applause. Following that, delicious cake was served. And after that, everyone was rather full.
"So guys..." Colin said, eventually, when the house was empty again. His parents went to work, Sophie and Riku had gone off to visit friends, and Lan and Randy had followed their partner. "How about we spend the day in Terminus City?"
"That sounds like a great idea pal" said Bellamy, delighted. "But first, our presents?"
"Heh heh, of course" said Colin, and gave them the new phones they had been waiting so long for. Bellamy instantly turned his on and began customising it, while Luke put it in his sweater pocket, claiming he'll start it up on the Trailmon.
And with that, the twin's first birthday was probably one of their best days ever. Their partner treated them to every luxury he could afford, much to their delight. And, in the end, their only regret was that their next birthday was still another full year away.
