"Easy now... just relax"
Sky-blue eyes opened to a scene of surreality. Light filled his vision, gradually dimming until shapes and shadows could be seen. Luke's eyes slowly focused until he saw the digimon in front of him. It was a white lion-like digimon wearing blue armor, his gentle yellow-eyed face looking relieved.
"W-whuh..." Luke murmured, his mouth not quite working yet. The Elecmon shook his head to try and shake himself out of this drowsiness, only to find it really, really hurt.
"Yeah... best not do that again" the digimon said. "You're lucky to be alive, Elecmon, seeing as it looks like something hit you hard in the head"
"What... happened?" Luke asked, his ability to form words gradually improving.
"We'll worry about that later, okay?" the Spadamon said. "What's your name? Do you remember that?"
"It's Luke" the Elecmon could remember little more than that. Why though? He definitely knew that his life had not started here, but, other than his name, he remembered none of it.
"Well then, Luke, you've been out for about three days now. And believe me, a rookie level taking that sort of damage would've been fatal even before the world turned to ash... you must have some damn good fighting spirit"
Luke clutched his head, giving a nod. That much he knew as well. Many years had passed since the destruction of the world - when Yggdrasil's divine fire destroyed nearly all life on the digital world; corrupted so strongly by an unknown force that not even the X-Antibody digimon were safe. Only now were digimon gradually coming back to life, those lucky few with digicores strong enough to have survived the end. Yet not many survived this harsh wasteland. Luke would have been one of the unlucky ones, but it seemed, he was probably extremely lucky.
"So, Luke, I'm Doc Lantis" said the Spadamon. "The hard part's over for now, hopefully we can get you up and walking by the end of the day"
With some careful healing techniques that drained Doc Lantis almost dry of energy, Luke gradually improved his condition. The Elecmon could walk first on all fours, then slowly on two feet, until at last, he was almost back to full health. That was except for most of his memories - lost in whatever it had been that had injured his head so badly.
"Thanks for helping me out, Doc" Luke said to the Spadamon. He smiled and said it was nothing, although it had clearly taken a lot of energy out of him.
"Well then, I suppose you'll be wanting to head back out there and find out what happened, eh?" Lantis asked. "Well, here's the stuff that was on you". He handed the Elecmon a messenger bag. Luke looked within it, and saw some familiar belongings. His blue scarf, his water bottle, a first aid kit, and a letter. He opened it and read.
"Please deliver this Platinum McGuffin to Mr. Bungalow so that he may use it for unsavoury and/or evil deeds"
"Strange, huh?" Doc Lantis said. "Well, hope that's enough for you to go on. Good luck out there, kid"
And so Luke's adventure through the dusty wasteland of what used to be the Western Flatlands began.
It was a lonely journey through the barren, scorched landscape around him. Luke was absolutely sweltering in the heat, his red and white fur not handling it very well. However, in the distance, he could see a strange statue. It seemed to be... a Bearmon throwing down some sort of rap, and a boy playing a viola. Luke smiled a little, that seemed cute, but was otherwise completely confused as to what it meant.
"You there! Hey!"
A male voice called out to him. Luke turned to see who it was, and saw a Black Gaomon approaching. He was dressed in a khaki combat tunic and was wearing a hard helmet. Luke saw that behind the statues was some sort of base. He understood, this must be some sort of soldier.
"Hey. What's this place?" Luke asked him as he approached.
"This is the New Terminal Republic outpost for the Western Flatlands" said the BlackGaomon. "I'm Lieutenant Jay Sparrow"
"Heh... I bet you can't wait 'till you get promoted to the next rank eh?" Luke asked, grinning.
"Honestly, I'm dreading it" said Jay. "Anyway, you're a Courier, right? Are you headed east?" Luke nodded. "Okay, good. I was wondering if you could do a quick favour. We've lost contact with a nearby town. Do you think you could go check it out and report back?"
"Er... don't you military guys have some sort of scouting corps to do that?" Luke asked, tilting his head.
"Yeah, well, we're kinda stretched really thin here" said Jay, scratching the back of his head. "You see for this whole premise to work we have to be super incompetent at everything we do, and also corrupt. By the way if you have some bottle caps I can get you something nice?"
"...um." Luke said, sweatdropping."What sort of something nice?"
"Weapons, armor, supplies, that sort of thing" Jay explained. "You see, since the end of the world, ordinary currency is worthless, so we have taken to using bottle caps for the purpose of money".
"Oh, phew, I thought you meant the other kind of nice" Luke said, laughing.
"Well... there's that too" Jay said, blushing a little.
"Perhaps later." said Luke. For now he had to go check out a nearby town. And so he did. The town was full of fire and smoke. An eerie silence fell across him. Luke trembled a little as he stepped closer to the town hall, hoping to return with an answer to Lt. Jay, when all of a sudden, a voice cried out.
"Stop right there!"
He looked up, and saw the most extraordinary thing he had ever seen. A group of digimon gracefully leapt onto the ground in front of him. Their leader appeared to be a Veemon. And they were all wearing... sailor senshi outfits.
"Um... who are you?" Luke asked, a little worried.
"I am Randy Inculta and we are Caesar's Senshi!" said the Veemon, the other digimon making various poses. Luke realized with a bit of incredulity that all of them were male... and wearing miniskirts. "The champions of justice!"
"...er, okay" said Luke, taking a step back.
"Therefore!" Randy continued. "I charge you to spread word that it is our goal to right wrongs and triumph over evil..." he pointed at Luke. "Yes, that means you!"
"Meep" said Luke. "Well... can I ask a question?" he asked. Randy nodded. "Why are you wearing those outfits?"
"Because we believe these to be the uniforms of great soldiers who conquered the world two thousand years ago" said Randy. "And we are destined to be the ones to bring civilization back to these wastes following the corrupted fire of Yggdrasil that burned the world".
"And... you're all males are you?" Luke asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Of course. These outfits are far too masculine for females to wear" said Randy, brushing some dust off his miniskirt. "Now then. You are tasked with your mission, profligate, so you must do our bidding".
"Um... so, I'm free to go?" Luke asked.
"Yes!" said Randy. And with a variety of stock footage anime shots with rolling backgrounds, all of Caesar's Senshi disappeared.
"Um... wow" Luke remarked to himself, and prepared to relay this intelligence back to the NTR base.
Well, it had been a long journey. But... Luke had made it. He had found out why he had lost his memories - he had been ambushed and attacked near the town where Doc Lantis had saved him. And the item he was meant to deliver, the Platinum McGuffin, had been stolen.
However, Luke was in no real hurry to get to the heart of the matter, given that the individual in question who had done that to him was currently within a fortified city defended by an army of robots. Being no fool, instead, Luke simply went about his job as a Courier. He delivered things, got paid, made friends, rose up in trust with both the NTR and Caesar's Senshi, and just did his job.
His journeying brought him to another place, however. The place where Yggdrasil's Fire had hit the hardest. And there he met an individual who wore a longcoat with a flag drawn on the back who droned incessantly about Bearmons and Bullmons and how it was apparently Luke's fault that this landscape of nuclear fire, ash and cracks in the earth were the way they were.
"Um. Dude. Do I look like Yggdrasil to you?" Luke asked him as he stood dramatically on a pedestal in front of a missile. The Impmon turned around and saw him for the first time.
"...Oh." he said. "Sorry, just in this light, I must have mistaken you"
"Right... idiot... yes" said Luke, shaking his head. "Do you know why Yggdrasil did all this though?"
"Because digimonkind had become too powerful" Impmon said, folding his arms. "But your journey here has proven something to me. That Couriers are the way forward in this broken world. Them, and the messages they carry"
"Before you go on another monologue..." Luke said, holding a finger in the air to silence him. "Do you want to just... uh... come with me? Please? Before you launch these missiles that are full of Jesmon-knows-what..."
"Nuclear fires that will wash away the land around them, and-"
"Okay, right" said Luke, irritably. "Come on, let's go"
"I am a very deep and well written character" said Impmon.
"Of course you are" said Luke.
With that, the two digimon continued on their journey. Luke thought it was about time that they paid a visit to an old friend... the aforementioned mon in the tower.
It had been a simple task. What with the countless hordes of Devidramon and Commandramon that Luke had laid waste to in Yggdrasil's Divide, it was merely a matter of approaching his final destination. With Bellamy by his side, constantly waxing on about post-apocalyptic philosophy, wearing their matching longcoats. Luke made it to the gates of the shining city of New Rustport. Well... 'new' as in 'freshly salvaged from the remains of the old world'.
"Please submit to a credit check" said the Guardromon that was guarding the gate.
"Meh" said Luke, holding up a bag full of tens of thousands of these 'bottle caps' that apparently passed for money.
"...wow" said Guardromon. "Come right in here, sir. Just... go right in there to see Mr. Bungalow"
And so they entered the magnificently lit up casino, finding it covered in dust. Luke alone went up to the Penthouse, and there he saw a giant monitor with the still monitor of an extremely smug looking person.
"So we finally meet" he said from the speaker. "The courier who was meant to deliver me the Platinum McGuffin... approximately three months ago"
"Oh, uh, really?" Luke asked, sweatdropping. "I'm sorry, pal, just I had a bit of a setback when I was SHOT in the FREAKIN' HEAD!"
"Your incompetence aside, I shall offer you a deal" said Mr. Bungalow. "I will give you quadruple the payment if you deliver me the chip this very day. Are we agreed?"
"Eh, I can dig it" Luke said, shrugging. "So, Great and Powerful Oz, what's the plan?"
"Your task is to retrieve the McGuffin from the one called Kylie in The Tops Casino" said Mr. Bungalow. "Extracting it from her may be a difficult task I assure you, but, with your help my plans of which I have sat upon for the past 140 years will finally come to fruition"
"Okeydokey" said Luke, and left without another word. "Coming, Sophocles?" he called to Bellamy in the elevator. And finally, the two entered the Tops casino.
"Heyy buddies, gotta hand over all your fancy guns, ya dig? Then we can be all nice and smooth" said a security guard by the door.
"Sure" said the two digimon, and made him collapse under all the weaponry they had accumulated over the past few months. Then, at last, they made their way up to the one responsible for Luke's injury. Kylie the Gazimon.
"Uh... hi?" she said, looking shocked to see him.
"Hey" said Luke. "We got some business. Mind if we have a chat in private?"
"Uhh... sure I'll meet you up there" said Kylie.
"Nope, let's go together" Luke said, flexing his muscles. Kylie looked at her four bodyguards, but didn't really weigh up their chances very well. She reluctantly accompanied them up to the Presidential Suite. And there, they finally faced each other to talk.
"So, uh, I take it you're not here for a couple of drinks?" Kylie asked.
"Nope" said Luke. "That Platinum McGuffin please"
"Not happening baby" said Kylie, waving a paw dismissively.
"Okay then" said Luke, and clicked his fingers. Bellamy instantly took the cue and began to talk.
"My history lies in the west... where Bear and Bull tear at each other's throats, where nothing but smoke, ash and cracks in the Earth remain. And..."
Kylie only lasted two minutes before she was writhing on the floor with agony from Bellamy's excruciating musings.
"OH MY GOD MAKE IT STOP!!" she screamed. "HOW CAN YOU EVEN TAKE THIS?!"
"I've been putting up with it for weeks, babe" said Luke. "Now. The McGuffin please?"
She had no choice but to comply. Ultimately successful with his mission, Luke took the item, and almost strutted back outside. And almost immediately, he was met by two individuals.
"Heya" said Lt. Jay of the NTR. "We need your help to win this war against Caesar's Senshi. Please go see the Ambassador"
"That will not be happening!" said Randy Inculta of Caesar's Senshi. "You will instead help Caesar seize this stronghold of profligates and make the digital world great again".
"I have a better idea" said Luke. "I'm, like, just a courier, okay? I'm going to deliver this McGuffin to Mr. Bungalow, and then I'm going to do another job. If you want my services, call my secretary here. I'm sure he'll be happy to answer any inquiry you might have"
Before Bellamy could go on another monologue about the futility of digimonkind, both of them backed off.
"Now then" Luke said, as they headed toward Mr. Bungalow's Casino. "I think we could do with a stiff drink after this"
With that, The Courier Luke's tale had ended.
