Satsuki never was someone who really liked little kids, even when passing herself off as "little miss perfect". There was just so much about them that irked the older teen. Maybe it was just the fact that many were loud or obnoxious, having such single-minded trails of thought that she could not help but pity most would-be parents who thought to themselves that having a kid would be fun.
Needless to say, it was rather grating to be so close to that damnable Village of Beginnings. Human babies were bad, but Digimon babies were an all new level of irritating. The damn things were practically all over the place. You had to pretty much make sure to keep an eye out where you are stepping at all times unless you risk stepping on one.
Yeah... she learned her lesson the last time she was here. Took her at least an hour to clean the Zurumon gunk from the bottoms of her shoes. Thankfully the caretakers didn't seem to notice the incident, so she got off scott-free. Wasn’t like the slime ball could testify about it… it barely was even able to speak!
Well, luckily she was not going to have to stay here in this place too much longer. It wasn't far from their actual destination, the Spartan Training Grounds. It was frankly the perfect place to get Circe some practice with fighting, cause heavens certainly knew that sheep-like Digimon needed to be stronger. The two got into a bad run-in with some nosy Starmon poking his head(?) into places he shouldn't be poking into.
Some of her more... questionable practices had to be safeguarded after all.
As Satsuki walked across the trail, she eyed the black-wooled Agarmon that skipped and hopped by her side; they humming a small tune.
Circe was a bit of a work in progress. While with HER guidance, they were able to delete the mutant Digimon; they had a few close calls that Satsuki would have preferred to have not happened in the first place. Her partner Digimon had the potential to become a REAL combat machine, but they needed fine-tuning.
Satsuki wasn't going to just settle for her partner being some third-rate Digimon. They still have only touched the tip of the iceberg that this Digital World has to offer.
"Oy, Satsuki! Look at that!!" The Arpamon would squeak aloud in a vaguely Bronx-esque voice, they rushing ahead of the girl.
Satsuki only really had a moment to grit her teeth before her partner dashed off. God damn it. The girl would think to herself, quickly jumping into a sprint to try and catch up with the energetic sheep. She REALLY wished that Circe wasn’t so… spontaneous at times. It made keeping up with the damn ewe quite a chore at times…
By the time that she caught up with Circe, her partner was by a rather large tree; crouching to pick up something. The sheep Digimon was busy messing around with some kind of rock. No… scratch that. The sheep Digimon was busy messing around with some kind of EGG.
Her partner had found a Digiegg in the middle of the wilderness.
“Just look at this! Those silly village wardens sure are bad at their jobs if they just leave these things laying around all willy nilly!” Circe would comment, holding the egg within their arms.
“Circe, put that thing back down! You don’t where it’s been for christ’s sake!” The girl would immediately scold the lamb-like Digimon, eyeing the oval-shaped object. White with red stripes. Yeah, was definitely a Digiegg. She could have sworn she saw the thing “breathe” for a moment.
“Aww, come on Suki! It’s just an egg! It’s harmless!” The Arpamon would cheerfully quip, experimentally tossing the egg slightly in the air and catching it.
Before her partner could go and do something stupid, Satsuki quickly intervened; grabbing the egg right out of Circe’s cloven hands. She scowled as she held the egg, she tucking it in her arm. “Idiot! Don’t go trying to treat this like a toy! You want to be the one to explain ourselves if we break it and get caught?!” She’d angrily scold the sheep Digimon, they very quickly switching to a rather rejected mood.
“Get it now? Good… Cause while I don’t really give a crap about this thing, I’d rather we NOT get ourselves into more trouble than we get into regularly.” Satsuki rambled as she held the egg out, handing it back to her partner. “Just put it back where you got it and leave it. It’s not our problem if the thing gets broken or it hatches and the baby gets eaten or something.”
Despite a somewhat disappointed look on Circe’s face, the Rookie level wasn’t willing to disobey her tamer’s orders.
However, before she could place the egg back at the base of the tree’s trunk; a rather audible crack could be heard. It didn’t take being a genius to guess where exactly the noise was coming from.
It didn’t take long before the top of the egg’s shell pops, Circe’s eyes meeting that of a tiny Jyarimon’s. The tiny red ball with a pair of tiny bat wings seemed to chirp happily as it gazed at the Arpamon.
“... Satsuki? Does this mean I’m a mom now?” Circe would look back to her tamer and ask quizzically. This earned her a groan of exasperation from the human, one that very clearly defined that they did not approve of this.
“... You’ve got to be kidding me here.” Satsuki would mumble to herself, placing a palm on her forehead. She REALLY was not looking forward to the massive headache she was going to be having later today at the rate this was all going.
The tamer recollected her composure and glared at her partner, tapping a foot at the ground impatiently. “No, it does NOT.” She’d say disapprovingly at her partner, causing Circe to sigh slightly. “Ugh… Just, just leave it on the ground Circe. It’ll be fine, probably.”
That comment immediately startled the Mammal Digimon, a shocked look on their face. The Arpamon immediately held the egg that still had the Jyarimon nestled in it tighter, almost defensively even. “Wh-what?! You can’t expect me to leave this little guy, do you?! It’s just a little baby!”
“A little baby that’s NOT our problem. I HATE babies! Drop it Circe.” Satsuki would belligerently demand, she squinting angrily at Circe.
Despite every muscle in her body wanting to immediately obey her tamer’s order, Circe willed herself to stand strong. She wasn’t normally one to go and disobey Satsuki like this, but this was ONE time that she just couldn’t let herself. “Satsuki, it’s just a little baby! It’s not even a few minutes old, and you want me to dump it? Your mother wouldn’t have done that to you, would she?!”
That little sentence that the Arpamon uttered wasn’t one that had much meaning beyond trying to convince her tamer to let her hold on to the newly-born Fresh level. The Rookie knew nothing about Satsuki’s family, so it was not meant to be a jab towards her tamer.
But for Satsuki though, that comment was like a knife that slice cleanly through her heart.
Satsuki’s skin seemed to lose it’s hue as the blood seemed to drain out of her face, the expression on her face twisting into a horrified look of shock. All the aggression that the girl was feeling just a bit ago immediately was replaced with… fear? Trauma? Realizations? For her, it was a mixture of all three; her breathing getting funny for a moment.
Circe was quick to notice the sudden change in mood in her tamer. She had half-expected her tamer to lash out verbally at her… not just kinda wallow in despair. While it would have been funny to watch if it were anyone else, Circe couldn’t find humor in seeing her own tamer suddenly at the end of it.
The Rookie level immediately realized that whatever happened, it was something that SHE said. Without even a moment’s hesitation, the Arpamon quickly dropped the egg with the Jyarimon; rushing to comfort her tamer. “Oh my gosh, oh my gosh… I-I’m sorry Suki! W-was it something I said?! I-I’ll leave the Jyarimon alone if that will ma-”
“We’re taking it with us.” Satsuki would weakly mumble, she eyeing the Fresh level. The Jyarimon was completely oblivious it seemed to the sudden shift in tension that had happened a moment ago, it just babbling baby nonsense to it.
That comment caught Circe off-guard. “Wh-what? But… I thought you said not to bother with it Satsuki? Why are you changing your mind?” The sheep Digimon would ask, a worried look in her eyes. Something was wrong with her Satsuki, and she wasn’t just going to let it go that quick.
“I… I had a change of heart.”
“... You said you hate babies though.” Circe would ask dejectedly, confused and worried of her tamer’s mood right now.
Despite it not being completely okay, Satsuki refused to just emotionally collapse like this. “... I guess I can’t hate them enough.” She’d say half-heartedly, still eyeing the Fresh level.
No, it’s not like she cared about that tiny ball of ones and zeros. She just… she just didn’t want to stoop to her mother’s level. Not her aunt who was more of an actual mother than her real mom, but her biological mother. As much as she hated babies… she hated her mother more. For abandoning her dad… for abandoning HER.
Despite the brief freakout, Satsuki quickly regained her composure. She gave a warm smile back to her partner, this one a genuine one. “... I’m fine Circe. Just… change of plans. We’re taking the brat back to the village and dumping them off there. Then it’s back to those Training Grounds.”
While she had been worried about her tamer’s emotional state a moment ago, Circe very quickly calmed after being told that her tamer was fine. Satsuki would never lie to HER after all. They were best friends, and nothing can change that. Eagerly, she hugged the girl before running up to the Jyarimon; picking it up in her cloven hands.
“Suki ... Does this mean I get to be it’s mom for a little bit?”
Satsuki for a moment wanted to say something snide or sarcastic to the sheep, but… she just didn’t have the heart to do it this time. “Sure. Go nuts Circe.”
That one little answer of approval was all that was needed to trigger a squeal of joy from Circe, she triumphantly holding the Jyarimon up above her; immediately dashing back the direction they came while holding the Fresh level like it was her own little trophy.. “Aww yeah! I’m gonna be the best mom!”
As jaded as Satsuki was at times… She couldn’t help but crack a smile at seeing her partner having fun. For once at least.
