MPC#40: Videogame Nightmare

Sometimes, your opinion about something is simply utterly riven...
Virtual reality within the digital reality, a concept as bizarre as it was exciting. The level of scientific progress within the digital world steadily approached the one of the human world, and it some cases it even trumped it thanks to the inherent aspects of their reality. Digimons did not require complex technology to create simulations, they simply needed to learn how to alter a small pocket of digital reality to their desires. It's how they could conjure their powers, and it was the way a group of very smart digimons developed the first fully-fledged virtual reality helmet.
Within Terminus City, they hosted the first open tests, and it was of course clear that Cion the Sagitamon was most intrigued and volunteered to be a guinea pig. The vulpine digimon had not remained long within the confines of a large hall before she found herself within a wormhole. Blue and white rings of light passed her by with tremendous speed, bedazzling her slightly. Strangely enough though, she did not feel like falling, move like floating in the middle of nothing. There was neither cold nor heat, just nothingness. Whatever this realm was, it was clear to hear it was far removed from the world she knew.
The tunnel ceased with a blinding light, and when her vision returned to her, she found herself in the middle of a plateau made out of stone. Becoming aware of herself again, she realized she was carrying a rather bizarre attire, consisting of a purple dress and a large topper. And in both of her hands was the biggest and most noble-looking rifle she had ever seen. It likely was some sort of sniper rifle, though she did not recognize the model. Just like her outfit, it was probably a mere creation of fantasy.
Cion's gaze shifted to the environment that surrounded her, and it sufficed to say it was a frozen wasteland. The Sagitamon was on top of some sort of massive bridge, connecting one mountain with the other. Everything was tinted blue while perpetual ice and darkness covered everything. In front of her, she beheld a massive structure easily the size of a small house, in which a big purple crystal rested, guarded by towers made of solid stone. "Wait a second..." She suddenly uttered, recognizing this environment as something all too familiar.
Turning to her right, Cion immediately smiled when she identify a very goofy scientist as the owner of an item store. "It's the digimon-adaptation of this super famous videogame. LOLD, yes. Gosh I love to hate this game..." She spoke to herself, unable to help herself but laugh a little. The Sagitamon was actually quite impressed, knowing that the engineers of the virtual reality helmet had managed to code this infamous online-game to become a first-person experience. "What a great conception." She exclaimed. Unfortunately, there were no other players, hence she believed this was merely a tech-demo. Still, it was without a doubt promising, and it filled her cheery heart with excitement.
Intending to remove her helmet, even if it was not displayed on the model of her character, she soon realized with trepidation that there was nothing for her to take off. "Uuhm... really funny. But I'm done now, so... let me out... pretty please?" Cion spoke, hoping that the digimons from the other side would answer her request. Regrettably, no matter how much she waited for an answer, none would come. "G-guys...?" She stammered yet again, a sudden sensation of frost overcoming her as heavy winds past her slender frame.
Nervously walking in circles, she cursed under her breath, hoping this technical error was not a permanent one. Cion would have continued to do so, but she was startled by something she simply could not believe. 4 more pillars of light appeared around her on the stony plateau, 4 all too familiar characters emerged from them as the lights faded, revealing selectable characters from the original game. However, unlike her, they appeared completely normal. They did not react to her, and started to move in highly unrealistic ways, like they were mere puppets guided by a master, like... "Like they are not other players with access to a virtual reality helmet."
How was this even possible? Did the engineers seriously link her up with the web so she could experience this surreal event? They did not even allow her to leave the game, until most likely she would either win or lose this round. It was only natural that the idea of being a prisoner within this game incensed her, but then again it would be an experience unlike any other. She would make sure to scold the testers, but for now she would simply enjoys herself. "I got a team to carry!" The Sagitamon exclaimed with an impish grin.
Rushing past the Nexus close to their plateau and the towers within the middle of the titanic bridge, she joined the ranks of her 4 allies, eagerly awaiting their opponents. By her side stood the small mage with a face enshrouded in darkness, the warrior of the sun, the titan carved out of a mountain and the bloodthirsty juggernaut with an axe that could cleave through any adversary. She liked this composition, as it was a potent mix of offense, defense and utility. And she was going to their sniper, finishing the job from a distance. Considering her actual powers as a digimon, it seemed most appropriate.
Their opponents emerged out of the fog of war, and the very sight of it brought a lot of chagrin to her spirit. The being of pure magic, she who swore to eliminate everyone following the flag of the skull, the colossus of marble, the frost archer and... "Where is the fifth one?" Cion wondered, becoming paranoid as she feared some sort of ambush of trick. Perhaps the fifth adversary hid within the shrubbery at the edges of the bridge. Thankfully, she remembered her avatar was prepared for such a situation, which was shy she tossed a couple of bear traps all around the battlefield, creating a makeshift protective barrier.
Minutes of cold stares and motionlessness past them by, until finally her team's juggernaut had enough and charged into the enemy's ranks. Everyone else followed suit, the exception being Cion of course who kept her distance to utilize her sniper rifle as effective as possible. The battle that was unleashed in front of her was pure carnage, yet it was also highly entertaining. Steel weaponry and magic projectiles darted around the battlefield like they were pieces of candy during carnival, and so were the individual characters displaced through abilities or death. It was complete madness, and exactly what had made this game so popular in the first place.
Though it was not quite like wielding a conjured bow, her aim was on point, scoring crucial hits against their enemies which sometimes made them retreat to recover. However, it did not take long for the first allies to become victim of the opponent's might, though they too suffered great losses due to being outnumbered. Strength in numbers was one of the most significant concepts of LOLD, even if it was simply unfair this round due to them lacking one player. Cion would soon find out this had been far from the truth.
As the Sagitamon took in a deep breath to recover and relax, a massive green glow dashed out of the shrubbery. A figure with a runic blade the size of itself danced around her traps like a ballerina, approaching the digimon's avatar with swift lust to kill. Panic-fueled, Cion fired over and over again at the female figure, but whatever force was protecting her proved too strong for her bullets to penetrate. Freaked out, she took to her heels and attempted to run away in vain. Just as she turned her head around to face her fears one final time, she could feel the blade penetrating her frame.
With a bloodcurdling scream echoing throughout the chasm, everything around Cion turned white before she gasped for air. "Easy there, Miss Cion. It's over, everything is okay." A familiar voice assured her, gently holding her hand. Still fueled with panic, she soon realized she was no longer within the virtual reality, but back in the chair where all of this had started. Lillymon, one of the testers, was the one holding her paw, remaining by her side so she could calm down. It took the Sagitamon a minute or two, but eventually she managed to take in a deep breath and remove the helmet from her head.
Somewhat hastily standing up, she stretched herself, making sure her being was still intact after this artificial near-death experience. All of this had been far beyond her imagination, leaving her speechless. Cion had not expected everything to feel this real, and it was without a doubt something the engineers still had to fix before granting public access. Wiping her face with a towel, the silver digimon eventually felt Lillymon's soft hand on her shoulder. Turning around to face the fairy-digimon, she was greeted with a warm smile, and quickly responded to it with a gentle smile of her own. If anything, she at least was save now again.
"How... was it?" Lillymon asked with understandable caution. Cion had every right to be angry and lash out at her, but in all honesty, despite her traumatic experience, she did not feel like it. After a couple of moments, she simply started laughing before nodding at her comrade, giving her a thumps up. "Still needs some tweaks. I give it a 5 out of 7."
