This is a double entry for the Bounty Hunt and Test MPC.
(Time: Some time before Bellamy and Luke met Colin, back when they were independent digimon known as Impy and Leky).
Impy had his arms folded and his face arranged in a pout as he waited here on the misty plains around Terminus City. He didn't get why they were even here doing this dumb thing. All he wanted to do was become a mercenary mon-at-arms, just to get out of that stupid Courier job they had earlier, but of course, his partner Leky had insisted that they go through it properly and receive the proper training.
"Well we do want to do this properly, right?" the Elecmon had argued when he signed them up for training. "Face it, Impy, we're just Rookie levels, we could easily die out there. We don't want to be outclassed, right?"
"And I keep tellin' ya, we're strong enough to go without it" Impy argued back. But, it seemed, Leky had a good point - they could learn lots of good tricks from doing this, and get paid even more by taking on the riskier missions. Of course, had Impy known it would involve taking part in this lousy boot-camp then he would have insisted 'no'.
But, it seemed, their 'training' was soon to be over. All that would await them was one more test. And despite Impy's annoyance with the whole thing, the Impmon was determined to not let these past couple of weeks go to waste.
Impy and Leky were waiting here at the agreed point on the plains, the two of them dressed in khaki fatigues. Their clothing was worn - featuring simple khaki colored tunics without pants. And by now their bare legs were rather dirty from their days so far. Although these were the days before Impy had fur, so it was only Leky that had to deal with the inconvenience of barbed grass seeds on his person, sometimes in very painful areas if he sat down in the wrong place. Impy at least had sympathy for him.
Here they were waiting for their instructor. Both of them looked up in the misty sky in expectance. Until finally, he appeared. Fine large wings beating, his fiery red and yellow robe billowing, and his swords clattering as he homed in for a land, here he was. The cause of their pain for their past fortnight. Instructor Buraimon.
"Good, you're on time" he said to them, curtly. Neither of them cared that he didn't greet them formally. If they had been late, that would have been an automatic fail, even if they had been a second from standing where they were standing before he landed.
But, as Leky had insisted on pressing home for the past two weeks, that was how it was. A recommendation from Instructor Buraimon went a long way in the mercenary business. They could easily gain double the bits for their contracts this way. Well, as long as it was worth it in the end, Impy thought.
"Good morning, Buraimon-sensei" Leky said, bowing his head. Impy had to bite his pride and do the same. Buraimon would refuse to acknowledge them if they didn't give him the right amount of respect.
"Yes, good morning, students Elecmon and Impmon" he answered. "Now then. You are both to take my final test for mercenaries, yes?"
They both affirmed this using the appropriate titles. Buraimon seemed satisfied. This was one of his annoying lessons - 'Your contractor is to be treated as your master. They are your customers. Fail to make them satisfied, and you fail me'.
"Very well" Buraimon continued. "First, let us go over what you've learned so far..." he began to pace in front of them while they stood rigid. "As an Elecmon and Impmon, you both excel in ranged attacks, but have weakness in melee combat. However, you have proven adequate enough to learn how to compensate for that".
Oh boy, those lessons weren't fun at all. Yeah it was one thing to hurl fireballs and zap lightning at a foe standing at a distance. It was another thing having them rush straight at your face with swords and claws. However, the plucky young mercenaries in training managed to learn how to deal with this.
While they weren't physically strong, they were at least nimble. And they had managed to build up a combat synergy in which they would both stay away from each other, presenting only the one target. And whoever the enemy went for, the other would attack with all their strength while their partner would take the defensive. It was the best they could do against single opponents. Against more than one? Forget it. They would need the assistance of a digimon skilled at melee combat for that. Something like a Guilmon or Veemon.
Buraimon had taught them that a digimon needs to be skilled in two of the three fields of combat to be effective. Strength, Mental power and Speed. And since Impy and Leky were about as strong as five year old human children, well, Buraimon's only option to give them something to work on other than their powerful special attacks was to make them faster. Hence why for the past couple of weeks, the Network Plains could see an Impmon and Elecmon running and panting as though they were within an inch of their lives. Buraimon was flying over them, snapping down words of encouragement.
But, Impy could tell. The past couple of weeks had strengthened then considerably. Impy was now as agile and lithe as a wild cat, and Leky could run as fast as a field hare, jumping high and quickly switching his quadruped and bipedal stances at speeds he couldn't have dreamed of.
"You have also proven yourselves able to follow instructions adequately" Buraimon continued. Yes, that had been kind of tricky as well. Especially when 'following instructions' meant obeying every one of Buraimon's commands within seconds, no matter how stupid some of them were. Such as one for Leky to stand on Impy's shoulders randomly, or for them to collect 30 purple thistles from the plains within the hour - something easier said than done.
"And now that brings us to your last task - capturing or destroying an enemy mark" Buraimon finished. He then reached into his robe pocket and lazily tossed a piece of paper toward them. Impy caught it, and he and Leky read its contents.
'WANTED - DEAD OR ALIVE: ZUBAMON'
Impy and Leky read Zubamon's crimes with increasingly terrified expressions. He had attacked and even absorbed innocent digimon weaker than him. Slowly, Impy and Leky looked up at Buraimon in a vain hope that this was a joke.
"I have selected for you a bounty that is achievable for any adequate student of mine" Buraimon simply stated before they opened their mouths. "Zubamon is known to be located somewhere on these plains. Return here tomorrow with either Zubamon captured or absorbed within the data of one of you, and you will pass my final test".
And so that seemed to be the mission of Impy and Leky. Find Zubamon, subdue him, then either bring him back to Buraimon alive or dead. But... with such little to go on, it seemed like a lot to ask for the two rookie levels. The Network Plains was a very large area, and then there was Terminus City in the middle. What if Zubamon decided to try and hide there if he found out he was being hunted?
"God damn it this is impossible!" Impy cried with despair as the morning turned to afternoon and they found no trace of the guy. He was genuinely upset. He saw no way how they could finish this.
"Impy... it's not impossible" Leky said gently, patting his back. Somehow that felt really nice for Impy. "We just need to think smart, y'know? I mean... we're not the only digimon on these plains. We just ask around to see if anyone's seen anything like him".
"Hmph, yeah, right, and they'd be like 'Oh, do you wanna join him, Impmon, ya filthy virus maggot'?" Impy retorted. Leky looked up at him with genuine sympathy.
"Not everyone thinks that, Impy" he said, gently. "I think you're a great digimon, you know? Yeah, you don't have really good self-esteem, and you could probably cut down on impulsive thoughts, but, I meant it when I said you were pretty cool".
Impy glanced at him, wanting to continue in his self-misery, but, after him saying something like that, well, there wasn't much he could say. Impy didn't want to hurt Leky's feelings, so, he folded his arms and looked away, making a noise in the back of his throat that would have said 'thanks' had he been more open about his feelings.
"So then. Let's track down this Zubamon" Leky concluded. Thankfully they seemed to hold some sort of gravitas as they ventured around the plains asking for clues. Even though Impy was a virus digimon, him wearing khaki fatigues seemed to make digimon be less frightened and more respectful of him. Although Leky did most of the talking.
Hey, maybe that was it? They saw Impy as Leky's bodyguard or something? Well, that was fine with him. Impy never really liked talking to digimon he didn't know. Maybe that would be a trait he'd lose in his next life? Whenever that was.
Before the evening, they seemed to have gathered enough clues from the digimon around the plains. This Zubamon was a wanderer, but he was very proud and quite dramatic. And so Leky had come up with a plan.
"We'll make as many challenges as we can" he said. "We'll put the papers everywhere on the plains. We'll hire flying digimon to spread them further. But, Impy, we gotta be ready...".
"Ready for what?" Impy asked, raising an eyebrow to hide his nervousness.
"We're going to challenge Zubamon to a duel at dawn" Leky said. "We'll draw him out, then fight him".
"But..." Impy seemed nervous about this. "Leky, a duel means one on one. He wouldn't agree to duelin' the both of us will he?"
"No, he wouldn't..." Leky said, his mouth curling in a smile. "So... just this once, in order for us to pass this test, can you be a lowlife virus maggot?"
Impy blinked for a moment, then he shared his partner's smile. "Heh heh. Ahh, I get it. Alright, bunny-boy. You're on".
And so the two digimon slept easily that night. Hopefully Leky's plan would come to fruition. Yes, they rested under the stars, dealing with the cold wind and the damp ground, but, resting next to Leky on a blanket was surprisingly warm and comfortable.
"Mmm, you make a great little spoon" Leky teased.
"Hey, not like I got any choice, eh?" Impy shot back, grinning as Leky cuddled him from behind, Leky's warm soft fur keeping him warm. "If we changed positions your tail would zap me or somethin'"
"Only if you weren't holding me right" Leky retorted. Somehow in the future this kind of talk would be something they never talked about again, but, in this time, before they were reconfigured as brothers, they were very affectionate toward each other.
Soon after, they fell asleep. And as the sky glowed with predawn light, they awoke.
"Alrighty, wake up, Impy" Leky said, shaking his partner awake. Soon they would be facing the fight of their lives, so they might as well make sure they were as well prepared as possible. They quickly devoured a healthy breakfast, then made some warm-up exercises for the challenge ahead. Both of them remembered their training well, neither of them wanted to be caught unawares.
Then, the sun rose up on the horizon. Impy then hid himself strategically. And there, sitting as dramatic as ever, clad in gold metal armor, was the digimon that was their mark. He was sitting on a high hill overlooking their little valley, leering down at them.
"So... an Elecmon..." he said, his voice rich with contempt. "You dare challenge me?"
"Yep, I am" Leky said, grinning up at him.
"And what possible action can you perform against me?" Zubamon asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Outsmartin' you for one" Impy said, pressing a remote control. At once, an explosion burst out from behind Zubamon, launching the screeching dragon off his dramatic precipice so he landed flat on his face down near them.
"You..." he growled.
"Well, it's your own fault for pickin' the most dramatic spot in this area to make your entrance" Leky said, shrugging casually. "We had literally no other landmines rigged than that one. So guess that's one point for us in outsmarting you eh?"
His speech had made Zubamon so furious that he would do nothing more than attack. And he did so, curling his body up into a bladed ball and spun rapidly toward Leky. The Elecmon nimbly jumped out of the way. But the humiliation was not yet over for Zubamon.
Launching himself in such a predictable way was a bad move against digimon trained by Buraimon in the arts of ranged attacks. And so as Zubamon spiralled past, Impy took careful aim, blossoming a fireball in his paw, then he threw it. It burst against Zubamon, creating a small explosion which knocked him down.
"T-THIS IS UNFAIR!" Zubamon shouted, fuming as he stood back up, glaring at them. "This was meant to be one-on-one! How dare you-"
"That's how justice works, buddy" Leky said, waggling his claw. "If you're a good guy, you can get away with little oversights like this. But, if you're a bad guy, like you... you only have to mess up once and it's over. It's your own fault for thinking you're so infallible that you can win a duel against us".
Impy was thoroughly enjoying how deliciously nasty Leky was being toward this guy. So much so that he remained silent for Leky to deliver the kicker. "So then. You can save us all some time and effort by surrendering now. Don't make us absorb you".
'Wow, Leky's really thinkin' like a Virus attribute here' Impy thought. Not that he had any objections or the like.
"You just try!" Zubamon snarled, and once again launched himself in a spinning assault against Impy. Both digimon scoffed. Oh they were used to this kind of battle by now.
"Bad answer" Leky said, clicking his paws, and at once, a bolt of blue lightning shot from his tail feathers and struck Zubamon hard, making him shriek as his armor conducted the electricity. The remainder of the battle was... not so impressive. Zubamon attacked one, the other struck with a ranged attack. On and on it went until Zubamon was finally defeated.
"Any last words?" Impy asked, holding a flame to his face as the dragon weapon lay on the ground. Zubamon responded by spitting at him. Impy sighed, and launched the fireball. And soon all that was left of Zubamon was an immobile egg.
"Alrighty then" Leky said, picking the egg up. "Guess this counts as a capture".
Soon after, somewhat exhausted from their fight, but not overtly so, Impy and Leky carried Zubamon's egg back to the meeting place. And there, exactly 24 hours after their last meeting, Buraimon reappeared.
"Well then..." he said, seeing all he needed to see. He took Zubamon's egg, recognizing it as the delinquent digimon's data. "Well done you two. This digimon will return to the Village of Beginnings, where he will atone for his crimes. And for now..." he flung two pieces of paper at their feet. "Here are my recommendations. Congratulations, you are both mercenaries worth respect".
And like that, he flew high into the misty morning. Impy and Leky grinned at each other, then embraced, glad that their endeavors had been rewarded so well.
