The sun beamed down on the Network Plains, the air fresh with an effect that calmed body and soul. Toki had decided to camp out in this region the night before as it was oddly peaceful to him despite its dilapidated state. It was the place he had vowed to see restored to its former glory to see it for himself one day. However, today felt off. The atmosphere was different. It was lighter, simpler, and the area around him felt alive in a way he had never felt before. Toki opened his eyes at this change and pushed himself up into a sit. His eyes widened at the scenery before him. The patches of corrupted data and damaged land were gone and in their place, was the most lush, verdant field he had ever laid his eyes on. Slowly, Toki stood up and took in this wondrous scenery. Surely this must have been a dream.
Suddenly, a chorus of cheers erupted in the distance and he turned to notice the walls of Terminus City, only they were more primitive, built of simple stone bricks layered much like European castle ramparts. The city in general just seemed smaller too. His scanner beeped and he heard a voice in his mind “Toki, spirit evolve. There’s something strange going on and I do not want you to risk being seen as a human right now…”
Toki nodded as his spirit spoke and formed the data energy in his hand and swiped it cross the scanner, opting not to shout his usual battle cry for spirit evolving to keep things quiet. Once he had become Turuiemon and got his bearings once more, he decided to walk down the dirt path towards the gates to the city “Turuiemon, what do you think is going on?”
“I am not sure…my memory might be fragmented but…this place seems familiar…” it replied with a hint of sadness in its voice. Toki noted the sadness and kept on his way. The gates were guarded by a pair of Knightmon “Oh-ho! A young traveler making his rounds! Come on in, lad and if you would like to meet the legendary knights of Terminus, they have returned from their most recent adventures! They surely have wondrous tales of the endeavors,” one of them said as they stepped aside to let Toki inside. Inside was a humble market square with stalls set up all around that hosted various wares. They seemed especially stocked to celebrate the return of the Terminus Knights. Digimon wandered the streets peacefully, going about their day and played simplistic games as if it were a fair. Toki navigated his way through the maze of stalls and larger Digimon until eventually he made his way out of the crowded markets and to the castle approach, where another crowd was massing.
The Digimon in front of him would kindly step aside for his smaller form to pass through until finally he saw a group of Digimon that were just in a league completely their own. Their very auras of power alone felt like they could crush him if he slighted them in any way. The Terminus Knights, and they were sitting around a table brought out for the festivities. He felt his pulse quicken as he tried his best to seem calm and take a seat on a patch of grass nearby to listen to them. He didn’t know how, but he realized he must have been in some past version of the Digital World. It was just Digimon here. No humans. Maybe the was why Turuiemon was so adamant about him spirit evolving. This place was just mesmerizing in a way. It was simple, but cozy and the people were jolly with the return of such great heroes. He was actually excited to learn more about their exploits.
One of the knights, Craniamon, spoke in a booming voice “And then Gallantmon, the magnificent fool, dove from Examon’s back straight into the Valley of Dragons by himself and took out several foes on the way down!” the tale was met with roaring applause and laughter from both the crowd and the Knights themselves.
“Please, if it were not for Examon’s brilliant timing I wouldn’t be here. Do not undersell his achievements simply because he is now residing in the Valley to aid in its restoration!” Gallantmon replied in a humble voice.
The crowds of people were clamoring for a chance to ask questions to the great heroes. One little Digimon, a rabbit-like one called Lunamon, approached “E-Excuse me! Excuse me, Sir Knights! I heard that you were going to invite Tsusagimon to join the Terminus Knights! Is he really?” they seemed so excited at the prospect, though the Knights went silent as they looked at each other. Toki felt Tururiemon’s unease in his mind, but kept listening.
Crusadermon stood up “He declined the offer. I, for one, was opposed of the idea. Tsusagimon is too soft. His idea of peace is naïve. To expect mere words to sway the hearts of criminals and vicious warlords is nothing short of childish. One must make the difficult choice of taking action if one is to bring about true peace.”
Leopardmon looked at Crusadermon “Come now, have you forgotten? He is more than powerful enough, he just refuses to use it. I respect him, but he should utilize his great strength to bring evil to its knees.”
Dynasmon slammed his fist against the table “He’s a damned danger is what he is. When I spoke with him, he dared question my loyalty to the royal family. Some nonsense about him pledging loyalty for as long as those he is loyal to remain true to their own convictions. If they ever strayed from the path he agreed with, he would no longer serve. I’d half a mind to crush him then and there for his insolence.”
Jesmon spoke up “That’s enough! We did not come here to squabble, we came here to celebrate our victories today. Please…” he looked at the Lunamon, who was on the verge of tears “Young one please…Tsusagimon may have refused but that does not make him any less than what you view him as…” he said. With a sigh, he raised his hand “I hereby bring this to a close. Please, enjoy the rest of your day, everyone.”
Toki was a little shaken at the argument. Who was Tsusagimon? Why were the opinions so divisive about him? He couldn’t worry about that now. He needed to find a way home, but where would he start? As he turned around, he felt a presence behind him and a hand on his shoulder “Are you lost, child?” it was Jesmon. Toki froze, petrified at this Digimon’s immense power. He let out a light-hearted chuckle “I apologize if I have frightened you. You are…not from here, are you?” he asked, though the tone of his voice suggested he knew precisely what was happening. “Come with me.” He would lead Toki out of the city, and Toki followed with no objections.
Outside the city, Jesmon looked out into the distance “You are displaced. You belong in a time far from now…I’ve seen this happen before, but fear not, there is a way for you to return home. There is a spring near the Village of Beginnings. It shines in the presence of those who…have been lost. Dive into it, and you will be placed back to your own time.” He turned to walk back to the city.
“Wait!” Toki shouted, and Jesmon paused to look back at him “What can you tell me about Tsusagimon?” he asked.
Jesmon seemed pleased to hear about him and sat down beside Toki “Tsusagimon is…one of peace. He would prefer no conflict and fight only when absolutely necessary. Make trade agreements, talk down a villain, and earn things fairly instead of amassing wealth, land, and power simply for the sake of it. To do good by the world. Crusadermon was too harsh with her judgement with him. He is not soft…he is…kind, a type of kindness that can be difficult to comprehend at first. He is more than powerful enough to be one of us if he desired, but he simply wants to wander the world and lend his hand to those who would accept his aid. I have seen him fight when it came to it, so trust me when I say do not underestimate him. It is simply that…he clashes with a few of our own. His kindness conflicts with Crusadermon and Leopardmon’s ideals of taking action and enacting justice and his perspective on loyalty greatly angers Dynasmon. Craniamon, Gallantmon and I wish they could have all come to an agreement, but alas, even he could not come to a compromise with them. As for what he does…well, he has on more than one occasion talked down those who had taken innocents prisoner and freed them without a single blow being struck. He struck down a powerful VenomMyotismon after they had gone on a spree of destruction across the Western Flatlands. So decisive was his victory and his speech to the VenomMyotismon’s minions that they all retreated to the dark in fear of his strength. Some even defected to make amends.” He said. Toki listened in awe, while Turuiemon felt strangely at peace with Jesmon’s words.
Toki looked down at the grass “He sounds incredible. A beacon of hope who just wants the world to be a better place. That’s what I want to do…will I even be able to live up to someone like that?” he said quietly.
Jesmon kneeled in front of him “You have a fire in your eyes, even if you do not see it. It is not a raging fire…nor a dying one…no, the fire burning within you is one of conviction. Never lose hold of that.” With that, Jesmon stood up “Farewell young one. May your time be brought the peace he so dearly sought for.”
After hearing the story from Jesmon, Toki had made his way across the plains towards the Western Flatlands so he could return to the Village of Beginnings. It was smaller and simpler, but still had that warm atmosphere. Jesmon’s words lingered in his mind. His presence among the Knights stood out to him. Perhaps it was his willingness to listen. They didn’t seem to separate people by power or status. Jesmon simply saw people as they were. It was something Toki respected.
He passed through the village and eventually made his way to a spring that began to shine in his presence. He looked back one last time at this world. He wanted to meet Tsusagimon…but he had to return to his home. To his friends. As he jumped into the spring, he felt himself being pulled away from this time. Through the ripples in the surface of the water, he saw a tall, thin silhouette wielding a large hammer. As Toki’s vision faded, the figure bowed to him in a parting gesture and he could have sworn he heard a faint voice saying….
“I hope you find the balance you seek…”
