Jack and Snowcone broke the surface of the water first, the grinning doofus gulping down another huge gasp of air after his previous huge breath exploded out from him after they had somehow switched gravitational orientation while falling, leaving them now bobbing softly near the shore of an emerald watered lagoon, decorated with shimmering plant life with rolling golden dunes rising up like frozen waves of earth in the distance.
Jack paddled them to shore, pulling Hiroyo along, Snowcone spitting up tiny droplets of water, shaking his head to dry his tiny body. Grumbling to Jack and giving him a grumpily adorable little nom on the back of his neck as he dragged himself up onto the banks, shaking his own head to send droplets flying form his golden blonde hair.
"It's like Grammie Ruthie always said: "When life presents you with a cliff to climb, jump instead."" He laughed to himself. "Metaphorically of course, don't go jumping off cliffs." He snickered to himself, wringing some of the warm oasis water out of his shirt by twisting it tightly. "You come through alright, Hiroyo?" He said giving her a very proudly mischievous smirk from ear to ear.

Everything was wet and dark because she'd closed her eyes when pulled into the gross river of trash and she kept them like that until Jack began pulling her. At first she thought he was pulling her deeper because he was drowning so imagine her surprise when her eyes opened and she saw him silhouetted against the sun. The water had turned several shades clearer than it had been going in. After a second of blinking she shook her head and began kicking her feet because swimming in clothes and duffel bag and the size difference between them meant Jack was as likely to pull her out on his own as a river being a portal to a different world.
...maybe that was a bad comparison.
Regardless she would put her all her effort into hauling her thoroughly soaked self to shore. It was awful for all the above mentioned reasons and she wasn't exactly the best swimmer but if a nine year old could do it while towing her then she absolutely would as well. It made her so very, very happy that the shore wasn't far away. so she could drag her self up the shallow slope.
Hiroyo stared at Jack for a moment in utter disbelief as he spoke. Either this incredibly, frustrating cute child had misheard his grandma or she gave some really awful advice. Then again if he pulled shit like that throughout his childhood...
Well, she could understand where grandma was coming from.
"I would prefer climb." She hissed at him because she was not above being petty with a small child apparently. She groaned and pulled the duffel bag off her shoulder to drop it on the sand then ran both hands through her hair because her hat was gone. She was in a digital desert, her hat was missing, and she was absolutely soaked. She had wanted adventure. A wry smile spread on Hiroyo's face as she twisted to look at Jack. "Well, we made it."

Jack laughed as she looked over at him, sharing the wry grin between themselves for a moment before they both began gently laughing and Jack stood, patting his jeans down to desoak them if only a tiny bit before offering her a hand.
"It's just a saying that means you shouldn't hesitate just because something is unknown or unexplored. People would never get anywhere if we were always too afraid to...take the plunge, as it were." he chuckled at the unintentional pun, chuckling into a closed fist before bringing Snowcone back to the front, cupping him in both hands, the digital creature's eyes darting over the sand, leaping from Jacks hand, not to the ground but back into the water, a sparkling shaft of multicolored and faceted light springing out from it.
"Pitchmon Digivolve to..." The small white ball of digital squish was now the seal like and orange mohawked Bukamon "Bukamon!"
Jack stood there, gaping as Snowcone circled in the water, happily splashing.

What were these words coming out of Jack's mouth? Nonsense to her for the most part! No wait, it was the same as that saying about entering a tiger's cave to catch a cub. It was pretty true, but did that mean Jack hadn't met his partner in the Digital world originally?
She really didn't know how the tamer experience was suppose to go, maybe she wasn't the best one to help him out. Especially with her probably unique situation among unique situations. Ah well, she was already in the boat.
"Is a good one but..." she trailed off as she unzipped her duffel bag and pulled out her completely not-soaked gym clothes. She stared at them for a moment, her face betraying her disbelief at this nonsense. The bag was soaked, she was soaked, but the clothes inside were dry? She would investigate further but there was a rather pretty light show in the water
"Beautiful.." Hiroyo said quietly as the lights sparkled. She pulled a face when the lights faded and Bukamon was revealed because the outcome sure didn't match the procedure. She was quick to hide the look on her face though, she was trying to not be rude! She snuck a glance at Jack to see if he had seen her expression but judging by his look she was safe! She grinned widely to see the mouthy kid silence and reached out to pat him comfortingly on the shoulder. "This happens lots. You wanted grow."

He looked over at her, opening his hands so the new puppy sized seal-like Bukamon could leap into his arms, beaming form ear to ear like a proud pageant mom, Bukamon now babbling to him like a toddler and Jack leans in, tickling him under the chin.
"Who's daddy's great big baby boy~ You are, you are~" He said, peppering the leathery, slippery skin of the digimon with kisses, snuggling his nose under Snowcone's chin before turning around and beginning to walk away from the oasis, not caring enough at the moment to look in his own backpack, lightly tossing Snowcone up into the air with each step. "Uppppp-sydaisy!" Bukamon giggled in response. "Uppppp-sydaisy!" Jack smiled, turning over to his guide in between tosses and switching his tone.
"(If you're more comfortable we can talk in japanese you know)" He said, now speaking to her in Japanese, though oddly enough his Japanese was filtered through a thick Hokkaido accent. "I'm going to school here, I kind of had to learn to speak the language." He said, now simply rocking Snowcone in his arms, Bukamon softly and gummily nomming on Jack's upper arm

"Beautiful." The last bits of Hiroyo's annoyance with him faded when he looked at her and then back to the seal pup. There a faint ache in her heart as she tried to imagine doing something similar with either of the bug twins. She closed her eyes, her smile turning sad. Would they ever be happy to see her? Had they greeted Isao so enthusiastically when they were young? It was hard to picture but...maybe. She opened her eyes and pushed it all away.
That water had already run stream.
"Oh! Good, easier to talk to each other then." Hiroyo said. Something he said pinged something in her brain and she tilted her head a little, to study him. "You know, in a foreign country its polite to let people know you speak the language!" She scolded with a stern face, but her eyes were glinting mischievously. Let the kiddo sweat a bit for making her talk so foolishly for so long! "Still, it's pretty impressive knowing two languages at your age. That accent is odd though, did was your tutor from Hokkaido?"

He chuckled softly, rubbing the back of his head with one hand, scratching in his hair nervously
"Yeah, sorry about that, didn't come to mind." He smiled still rocking Snowcone in one hand. "I actually speak three. Maine, the US state I'm from is very close to a French speaking province of Canada so I learned to speak French pretty early too." He nodded, acknowledging the accent. "Yea, I had to use an online course since I wasn't really planning on coming over here to study until a couple of months before I had to hop a flight so I wasn't going to be picky. Besides, you speak a hillbilly accent in one language you speak one in them all I suppose." He laughed.
They continued to walk through the desert, the sun beating down feeling real enough but something about it also feeling brand new, even exciting on Jack's skin, leaving him with a soft, childishly curious smile

"Three huh? That's very impressive. I suppose it makes sense you would pick up the accent of your tutor. I don't think it is..hill billy at all!" Despite her annoyances with him, Hiroyo honestly respected him for that. She spoke two, and one of those was with very, uh, creative word choices at times. She liked to think she got points for improvising from time to time! Still! Three languages at nine years old? The way he talked wasn't the least bit childish either. Time to fish for information!
"So how are you finding your studies here?" She said as she glanced over at him. It was hot under the sun but they had only just started walking, best to talk now before all their energy was sapped by the sun! When she saw him smiling again she couldn't help but feel a bit silly. He looked so young, her misgivings couldn't be true.
"Let me know if you need a break, alright? I can walk forever, even in this heat!" That wasn't much of an exaggeration on Hiroyo's part. She really did feel like she could walk forever of course she wasn't use to doing so in the desert under a sun but it shouldn't be a problem for her. At least, she didn't think it would be. This was a dangerous situation even if she thought she could handle it. What did she remember from watching those old Westerns? "Ah, let me know if you see anything weird, if I don't see it as well then it's probably a mirage."

He smiles at her, pulling Snowcone in close as the Digimon began to peter out its energy, snuggling up to his shoulder and closing his tiny beady eyes as he started to begin dozing off.
"It's certainly interesting. You guys...the Japanese I mean certainly have a reputation for keeping yourself on your toes with your studies and being a university student is certainly no joke what with the pressure you put on yourselves and each other. No wonder you were able to make your nation into the post war miracle that it is. Certainly being a nineteen year old American here is an expirience unlike most others." he laughs, letting his real age slip without realizing, unaware she hadn't picked up his late teenage-ness by herself
"Oh I'm fine, I'm usually more adjusted to the cold than the heat but something about this sun feels...oddly less harsh than a real desert sun might." He sighed, just examining the landscape.

Hiroyo did her best to pay attention as she carefully set her feet on the sand beneath them. She was soon going to regret bringing her duffel bag, the wet strap wasn't setting easily on shoulder. At least she didn't have her arms full of tiny seal as well.
She listened intently as he spoke about his experiences with the school system because, once again, he spoke way too well to be nine year old. She stumbled on the sand when he dropped his actual age because that was an entire decade older than she had been expecting and whooops! Hopefully her treating him as a kid had gone unnoticed among her embarrassing attempts at English.
"Ah, yeah. They are impressive." Honestly Hiroyo hadn't gone beyond the American equivalent of high school so she couldn't really speak for the higher levels he was working on. She could say with certainty that it was hard though, she just had to peek at her roommate's homework to know that. "You know, now that you mention it I think you're right. I mean, I've never been in a desert. I'm more of a mountain-person."

He watches her tumble and without a hitch in his movement threw Snowcone over his shoulder like his was bouncing the toddler digi on his chest, reaching out with two hands to grab hold Of Hiroyo and haul her back, pulling off her duffel bag and tossing it over his own shoulder without a word, helping her up before setting Snowcone to rest on it.
"Woah there. Stay up, I've got money on you..." he chuckled. "Sorry, old turn of phrase. Be careful though, hun. Here. Let me carry the bag for a bit so that you can rest your back." He smiled, an utterly pure and heartfelt smile as his small frame tilted slightly to one side by the duffel bag, setting Snowcone ontop of it so the seal could snuggle into his side and settle on the bag.
"No kidding, Japan is far more mountainous than I once thought. That don't show you that shit in Kamen Rider or Sentai shows I'll tell you what." he says, holding onto her wrist to help her walk with him, the exertion from the heavy bag mostly hidden but not fully from his face.

While it was good luck Jack misunderstood the source of her stumble, Hiroyo still felt weird when he took his bag from her. Especially since he was a good head shorter than her and didn't look like he had any visible muscle. Was this that chivalry thing some Western nations were so concerned with?
"I'm not that tired, just...distracted. The sun off the sand is surprisingly bright." She replied, but let him take the bag anyways. For a moment Hiroyo wanted to ask to carry Snowcone then decided against it. That was his partner, his friend. There was probably some bonding time that needed to happen between the two of them. With the way the two had looked when Snowcone digivolved she didn't think they would have any problems. "I can carry myself up wall with my fingertips, I can handle the bag so let me know the moment you get tired. I was actually coming back from my morning routine at the gym when I ran into you."
"So! Speaking of your new friend, have you heard the term Digimon before? It's what he is!" She said with an overly-bright grin. "This is the Digital World, it-" She paused with a finger on her chin as she studied him intently. While her expression was mostly serious, the corners of her mouth were twitching as she noticed him struggling with the added weight. "-actually how much do you know about all this anyways? You knew to bring Snowcone here to get stronger, did he tell you that or someone else?"

Jack nods, panting and huffing softly as he hefted the bag up again to try and carry it more comfortably but that was a losing battle in and of itself.
"Yeah, someone told me about what Digimon were and how to get to the Digital World, just took me a while to find the time to get to the river and I don't know the city very well so I had a bit of a time finding it. I brought him here so he could digivolve, and I guess I'll have to get into a fight to do that..." he sighed. "I don't relish that thought but I suppose it wont do any lasting harm, from what I was told Digimon just get reborn so long as you don't absorb too much of their data, which is a load off my mind."
He laughed, still leaning noticably to the side where he held the bag, Snowcone clapping with his big, shiny, grey fins, seemingly getting used to his new body.

The redhead was careful to keep her face forward as she walked alongside Jake. She kept track of him in her peripheral vision, and it made her face twitch from the effort of holding her laughter in. He really wasn't suited for playing beast of burden! Especially if they had to walk for a while. Hiroyo decided she should put an end to it. "Hey, I'm all rested up! Thanks for the break but I'll take the bag back now!" She immediately reached for the strap without giving him a chance to respond. By taking the initiative she expected to be able bully him into going along with her request without too much complaint.
"I suppose it is nice to know that opponents in a fight don't have to disappear completely. I really haven't been in too many fights myself." Hiroyo said as she tucked some hair behind her ear. Really she had been in a fight with...maybe Hookmon? She had a feeling that didn't really count since neither of the twins had landed the killing blow themselves. Beyond the two reaching rookie level, was it even possible for them to evolve further when they weren't really bonded with her? "I met the twins of this device when they were already Rookie level. That'll be Snowcone's next step, it'll be neat to see what he becomes! I guess in reality I don't know much about the process myself."
Speaking of, the seal was just too cute! The desert really wasn't his element but he didn't seem to mind in the least. "I hope you're prepared to protect us if anything happens little guy! Against anything stronger than a Rookie us humans are pretty fragile!"

Snowcone looked up towards Hiroyo as he was spoken to, barking softly, almost sounding like the beginnings of babbling speech as Jack surrendered the bag for the sake of his spine, swooping Snowcone back up into his arms and snuggling the little monster tightly, using one hand to try and cover him from the harsh sunlight.
The sand beneath their feet was shifty and uneven, making their feet sink a little bit with each step and Jack looked down with a concern on his face.
"Something's been disturbing this sand. Like a mole of something. Sand that's in huge dunes like this shouldn't be this loose..." He wondered to himself, the idea of hostile digimon being nearby too new of a concept for it to really cross his mind as he wondered, still softly bouncing Snowcone in his arms
