It had been awhile since Hana had last visited her mother. She visited a week before Christmas bring her some gifts from the places she's visited. Her mother just returned the gesture with some money. It hurt a little bit but she understood it. What did one get a homeless wandering girl who played an instrument for money?
What hurt more though was the fact she was looking at the door to their old run down apartment and it said for rent. Her mother never mentioned leaving this place behind a few months prior. Hana hoped she wasn't dead or anything but something told her that wasn't the case. Her mother probably fled the debt collectors for her medical bills.
Ryoko watched her from his place in her arms. Pretending to be a creepy doll wasn't exactly the best plan. However, it hardly mattered now since it appeared her mother was no longer there. He could see the disappointment on her face as she turned and headed back down the rickety stairs.
There was nothing he could say to elevate her mood. He didn't know her mother like she did and simply saying it was alright wasn't nearly enough. His own parents were probably still brawling and drinking in the dark area. How he managed to turn out alright was a miracle.
Hana turned the corner heading behind the apartments. She looked both ways making sure no one could see her before opening the portal and stepping through. Sight, sound, and smell of the digital world greeted her. She looked around at the cave they had been using as a sort of base. They had a few scattered along the paths they had taken so far.
Finally free of being limp Ryoko slid out of her arms onto the ground. He looked back at her and watched her sit down to mope. He scratched his head not quite certain of what to do. He's never experienced trying to cheer a girl up or anyone really.
"My family isn't that great either," Ryoko said sitting beside her. "My mother and father met in a tavern had a grand ol' time and poof I was born. They never stopped to pay me much attention. They just went on partying and having fun without me. Leaving me on my own to learn the world. You at least had one parent to raise you."
"Probably cause it was illegal to just abandon me," Hana grabbed her notebook and wrote.
"Probably," Ryoko said scratching his non-existent nose. He wasn't good at this at all.
"I know she's alright,"Hana began to write Ryoko watching her as the words flowed out. "She's just running, kind of like I do. Although she's running from debt collectors... me well I'm running from who I was."
"And who were you," Ryoko asked watching her pained face.
"Weak... constantly sick, unable to make true friends,"she paused. "I never asked to be sickly or weak. I never asked to not be able to leave my room till I was older. I don't ever want to be weak again or be confined again. I want to be free and strong but caring and gentle like the wind."
"You already are," Ryoko said earning a glance from her. "You don't have to run from being weak. Because it is alright to be weak. Everyone is weak to something. Take that comic you gave me to read. Even superman has a weakness though his is a bit out there." He rubbed his head a bit not sure how good a comparison that was.
"Point is everyone is both strong and weak. You have made yourself very strong, you didn't give up on life while confined to your room. You persevered and grew into a beautiful young woman. Don't look at your past as though you were weak. Look at it as what had made you strong."
Hana gave a gentle smile as she pondered his words. She shouldn't run from here weaknesses but see them as something that makes her stronger. She had to admit he gave good advice though his delivery could use some work. She reached over hugging him tightly telling him she understood.
Ryoko sighed a bit as he was hugged. He had said something right and for that he was grateful. Now if only he could do something about her missing mother. Although something told him she didn't want to see her again which is why she left without a word.
Ryoko himself never felt the love of his parents either. So he understood her to an extent though he himself hasn't felt the pain of losing them like this. Mainly because he was the one who had left.
"We got each other,"Ryoko said realizing this was probably the closest he's ever been with anyone. He felt her nod and she let go with a smile. A mutual understanding between them as they grew closer together. Their weaknesses didn't matter so long as they had one another to complete each other.
"I really wanted you to see my home though," Hana wrote.
"That's alright I was actually really nervous to do so," Ryoko said rubbing his head.
"Can I see yours," she asked.
"Maybe in the future...when I can protect you from what wanders the dark area," Ryoko said not keen on the idea and yet not willing to deny her request. It was his home and he wanted her to understand him as much as he understood her.
She nodded in understanding. From what she had heard it was rather dangerous so she understood the need to get stronger. The idea of him protecting her was a nice one. While she wasn't afraid of anything there was a sense of relief in knowing someone would always be beside her to protect her. She often wondered if she was a bit too much trouble but he never complained. Maybe he also felt the relief of just having someone beside him.
