Of Luck and Kindness
Toki sat down and took a drink of water “Hm? Well, I don’t know. It’s just so ingrained in my routine that if I didn’t continue it would just feel wrong. Besides, it helps us out, right? When it comes down to it I have the means of defending myself and other people with or without spirit evolving.” he said. His phone buzzed with a message and he checked it. He blinked in surprise at what he got.
“Hello Toki! I hope Shibuya has been nice to you this past year. I sent some extra money to your account, so go ahead and treat yourself. Don’t overdo it. Happy Birthday!”
The message was from his dad, Yosuke Akiyama. Toki brushed his hair slightly with his hand “Birthday? Wait…” he checked the date “Wow…I didn’t even realize it. Granted my perspective of time has been a bit weird ever since going to the Digital World…” he sighed a bit. He checked his account “..looks like business is good back at the dojo. That’s quite a lot…” he said, though for some reason still looked saddened about something.
His spirit looked at him with a curious tilt of his head “I do not understand. Aren’t these happy occasions for you? And your father has done something kind for you, yes? Are you feeling okay?” he asked. Toki has been a little quiet as of late. “Does it have to do with what you’ve been telling people?”
Toki stood up and put away his phone “Let’s go get some fresh air.” He said, avoiding the question. His spirit sighed and nodded his head, fading from view. Toki slipped on his shoes and walked out the door as he thought about where to go today. Perhaps some of the stores have some good deals today, so he figured it would be fun to see what’s going on in the city proper. One thing that Toki noted was that it was a particularly gorgeous day out. A few clouds in the sky, the sun was shining, and the weather was starting to warm up. It brought a faint smile to his face. Nearby he saw something interesting. There was a clover, and upon closer inspection, it had four leaves. “What’s this?” his spirit asked, curious about Toki’s interest in it. “Oh, this? It’s a four-leaf clover…they’re said to bring a lot of good luck because of how rare they are.” He explained. His spirit was intrigued “Fascinating…perhaps you should take it with? It was nearby when your father sent the message…maybe there’s some truth to the belief.” He suggested. Toki smiled and went back inside to grab a small plastic bag to keep it safe in before resuming his day.
The streets of the entertainment side of town were lined with capsule machines. Toki knew that these were very popular with fans of certain franchises. Figuring that he had money to spare, he decided to put some yen into one of the machines for a series he had been reading. After he rotated the dial, a capsule came out and it was marked as a very rare one. He heard the admiration of a couple of local kids “Hey! That guy got a super rare one. Lucky!” one of them said. The other looked a little more dejected “Aw man, that’s the last one I need for my collection.” He said. Toki looked at the capsule and gave them a smile. He knelt down next to the one who needed it “Why don’t you have it then? I can always try again if I want some.” He offered. “W-wait, really? You mean it, mister?” he said as Toki handed him the capsule “Sure I do! I hope you enjoy it. Don’t go losing it now, okay?” the kids left after thanking him. There was something about that act of kindness that was starting to brighten Toki’s day up a little bit.
“That was really kind of you. You don’t know if you’ll ever get that again but you gave it up to make someone happy anyway.” His spirit said, happy that Toki made someone’s day. It was something he respected about Toki. He always seemed willing to do something to make someone feel better or brighten their day if he could help it.
“It just felt like the right thing to do…” he blushed a bit. As they walked further through the streets, Toki heard a voice that made him flinch “Hey!” it was the one who started this whole thing. Toki should honestly thank him for what happened considering what the Digital World has done for him. He turned to face the thug…though he looked more cleaned up and less threatening than before “Uh…hey.” Toki meekly said to him.
The man scratched the back of his head and sighed, as if trying to think about what to say “Look…seriously, I’m glad you’re okay, man. I’m sorry about what happened at the river. To be honest, the second we couldn’t find you we started to panic. We thought we might of killed you! I called my cousin and…can we just forget about it? He grew up, and…I think I have to do the same. It kinda scared me out of that dumb lifestyle.” He said.
Toki was honestly shocked. An apology from him? “H-hey, it’s fine. I’m doing okay. In fact, things have been going great since that day. I guess it sort of woke me up a bit. As long as we’re fine now, alright? Tell your cousin I’m sorry about what happened in high school.” He said. This was all surreal. What was going on today?
He waved a hand “He’s fine with it, man. He actually wanted to apologize to you for starting it.” He said before he patted him on the shoulder and walked off.
Toki stepped into a local manga shop he frequented to see if the volumes of his favorite manga were stocked again. A specific volume was always missing and that infuriated him. It was the only volume missing every time he came by. To his surprise, they had restocked today and there it was, the fabled missing volume. Immediately he snatched a copy off the shelf, along with a few of the future ones, beaming happily. His spirit was giddy too, having read this with him and wanted to continue the story. He walked up to the cashier and paid for his growing collection before he carried the bag out with a happy stride.
Nearby, some kind of event was going on, so Toki decided to take a look. It was a giveaway for a game console and some games for it for the grand prize winner. Toki hesitated for a moment, but then touched at the clover he placed in his jacket pocket. He waited in line for quite some time before buying a couple of tickets. After going through the process of signing his name and address, he bid farewell to the person running the event.
This day turned out to be more eventful and fun than he thought it would be. He didn’t expect to actually win the prize, but it wouldn’t hurt to try. He returned home and hung up his jacket, though not before taking the clover out and inspecting it. He smiled and placed it on the nightstand next to his bed. He sent a message back to his father “Thanks dad. I hope things are going well at the dojo. If you have time, come visit someday.” It had been some time since they saw each other. It would be nice to finally reconnect despite how Toki felt in the past.
His spirit reappeared “So shall we continue reading?” he said and gestured to Toki’s bag. Toki smiled “Of course! I’ve been waiting so long to see what happens next.” He sat down on his bed and began reading with his spirit. Toki wasn’t sure why this day turned out the way it did, but he was glad for it. People he worried about turned out to be not so bad after all and he brightened someone’s day. He even worked up the courage to try and reconnect with his father despite Toki’s thoughts on him lately. This made him pause his reading for a moment as he reflected on his past relationship with his father and how strenuous it was before he left for Shibuya. Toki admitted his fault on the matter and felt awful to spread lies, but now he had a chance to reconcile. With that in mind, he resumed reading, thankful for the chances this day had brought.
Several days later, Toki won the grand prize in the contest and received his new console.
