“Are you sure we couldn’t find anyone better than her?” Said the head writer “Or at least have asked someone to change how the commercial would be so we could hire someone better?”
Yume yawned for no particular reason, gazing with tired eyes at the sun.
“Are we gonna start soon? I’d really love a nap right about now. If we’re not starting yet, can I go ahead and take one? I’ll make it short!” She stated with a weak smile and a wave of the arms.
There was a collective groan in half the room. The half the room that knew Yume well enough to understand she couldn’t keep that promise, but not well enough to have grown numb to her behavior just yet. The kind of person who’d try to be amicable and considerate when dealing with a teenager that just got hired to after her employer’s suggestion of her name to the director, who jumped on the first opportunity to make their vision be realized, even if it was just a small time add for a 4 A.M. commercial. Still, given what the topic was, it was pretty normal that it aired at that hour. Only the people the commercial were aimed for would probably be awake at that hour, well, them and a few gamers, and possibly anyone who couldn’t sleep, like the way Toy had had a hard time sleeping yesterday after hearing about the shooting.
“What? A commercial? You’re gonna be famous Yume! And when they see us, and me, and they will see I’m not that bad, right? I can’t wait to star in a commercial, now we can both get to our dreams!” The cardboard box digimon stated waving his arms and practically jumping up and down to accompany the sound of his rising voice. It was almost a gut punch to Yume to have to tell him the truth about what this was gonna be like.
“I’m afraid you can’t be in the advertisement Toy. The T.V. is run by humans, shown to a lot of humans, and we don’t know almost any of them, even if they somehow allowed you in. But don’t worry, we’re not losing much anyway. You can’t make it big by appearing in one commercial. Plus, this isn’t even really a good commercial, it’s just some dumb diaper advertisement.”
This did not seem to be overly convincing from Toy’s side of the matter. He gazed down, knowing Yume was right but perhaps not wanting to confront that fading sliver of hope. Yume sighed, sat on her knees in front of him and looked him in the eye.
“Alright, do me a favor and both behave yourselves while I am out and I promise when I can afford to, I’ll film an advertisement with you. What do you think?” While she wasn’t sure exactly why, this seemed to lift Toy’s spirit a bit, as the digimon vehemently nodded and raised his gaze to her, before turning around and clearing his throat. He was probably aware that he was getting scarier the more Yume looked him in the eye, due to his ability.
“Well, I suppose that will be good enough.” He said, obviously trying to disguise his true gratefulness. Yume chuckle a little, then got back up herself. That day Toy had tried to cook, clean, he hid among the boxes when someone ringed at the bell, he even opened the bed for Yume and brought her Cloudy (whom she always seemed to sleep with nowadays). Fortunately Yume was a heavy sleeper, so even Toy’s uneasy, anxious trouble sleeping himself did not disturb her rest much. Unfortunately, Yume was a heavy sleeper, so she ended up getting late to her job anyway.
It was hardly the first time too. Many would have already dismissed any services she might provide. That said, it was exactly this easiness in falling asleep that led them to hire her to begin with. No one else would take the job, and probably those that could were not as good at what the director had planned specifically. Though, honestly? Yume couldn’t care less whether they liked her performance.
Then entered the real star of the show. It seemed they hired some small time niche celebrity to come and perform for the commercial as well. She entered, carrying her daughter in her arms, seeming to sniff her, causing the baby to giggle playfully. Yume approached her.
“Awww, does she a change?” Yume cooed, half at the baby, half at the mother.
“Not particularly, but she does need a bit more make-up, she looks dusty, I just gave her a bath an hour ago!” The actress scoffed.
Yume raised her shoulders and hands.
“Some babies are dusty. Like Dustin. Or was it Carl? No I think it was Just-…” Yume yawned again. “Huh, what was I saying? Oh, right, now it’s time for the shootings, right?”
Some rolled their eyes at the comment, others seemed a bit more annoyed (perhaps they were fans of the woman Yume just talked back to?) , and Yume was still made to wait EVEN more (and not allowed a nap in the meantime). After the baby was properly pink and shiny, the actual commercial began being filmed. It was a pretty simple, but odd commercial, the kind truly made to get your attention nomatter what.
The commercial told the short story of a teenage girl who can’t handle the stress of studying, and her mother with whom she fights. The fight would result in the baby just starting to cry uncontrollably. While the mother was busy trying to figure out a way to help the baby calm down, the young girl would go into the baby’s room sneakily, as if to play a prank. Then the mother would somehow recall the solution, put some brand diapers on the baby, and that would make her calm down. Then she would to go put the baby to sleep, saying how much she wanted to help her older daughter like that, and end up finding the daughter happily sleeping on the baby’s crib with a diaper on her as well, rounding up the message of “so comfortable to make them sleep like a baby” motto of the commercial. There was only one slight technical difficulty…
“Really? She doesn’t wake up. Her hair looks like a mess now, we’re gonna need to edit this now, big time.”
The actress standing over the crib took a look at her baby. Shiny, pink, full of make-up, twitching uncomfortable with everything that was stuffed on her face. The older girl, Yume, was on the other hand sleeping peacefully, despite the crib definitely not being for her size nor of course age.
“Actually…” the actress said, making an internal vow to herself. “Maybe we can keep it as is. Natural, real, maybe those are better ways to go about this.”
