“A story?” Monodramon inquired to the little digimon. It had hatched not a couple weeks ago yet, but it had already reached the in-training stage and already it was beginning for a bedtime story. Monodramon smirked. To think he had been the one the digimon chose to have tell him a bedtime story. “Guess it can’t be helped. I’ll tell you an awesome bedtime story!”
“Wow, really? Thank you, thank you!” The tiny furball bounced up and down happily. “What is the story going to be about?”
Now that was the problem with this whole scenario: Monodramon didn’t know any bedtime stories to tell. He could recall that master Dorbickmon used to tell him some, but so much had happened since then that he couldn’t recall a single one. Monodramon took a hand to his chin, trying to think of anything in his past adventures that could serve as a bedtime story for the little digimon. Getting kicked out of the dojo and finding the merchant Wisemon… Getting lost in the human world… Getting kidnapped away from-
“Oh! I know, how about a story about a digimon who becomes a tamer?” I didn’t actually know any such story, but this little buddy was less than two weeks old, surely they wouldn’t complain even if I ad-libed it.
“Ooooh!” They gasped, and vehemently nodded, adjusting their position in the leaves on the ground. I cleared my throat. I had this in the bag, I had imagined it so many times already. Still, I would just need to fill out the tiny details.
“Hmhm… Well, then…”
Once upon a time, there was a simple Monodramon. This wasn’t a particularly sad Monodramon…nor a particularly happy Monodramon. He was simply a Monodramon like any you’d find anywhere. But one time he had gone and visited the human world. There he met many humans, and some of them were even tamers! The tamers had something the Monodramon wanted, a digivice. So the Monodramon pleaded Yggdrasil in his dreams to one day have a digivice of his very own.
Yggdrasil was probably listening because one day, as the Monodramon was travelling through a desert in a trailmon, the trailmon had a bad cough. Baggage and smoke flew out of the transport digimon, as did the Monodramon, accidentally cast out. Along with him went his two friends, a Renamon and a Shoutmon. The monodramon fell face first into the sand, getting partially buried by it, but oh what is this? Buried in the sand next to where Monodramon had landed there was something hard but clickey. It was… a digivice! The Monodramon grabbed the digivice and found his body changing. It changed into a big, big handsome human and totally not some blonde little human girl at all. That would have just been silly.
Now that he was human, the Monodramon had a digivice of his very own! There was just one more thing he needed to become a tamer: He needed digimon partners to be by his side. As such, he turned at once to his friends, and they were so impressed by his human form that they bowed down and begged to be his partners because he was so just amazing. Being kind and generous and as mentioned awesome, the Monodramon agreed to their plea, allowing them to become his partners.
Still, one problem remained. Now that they were thrown out of the trailmon, they had no way of crossing the desert. The only food and drink they had was that which dropped from the luggage on the train. While he waited, his two partners quickly searched for the food, and brought what there was to him. There were many sweets and many delicious things like meatapples and even a big bowl of freshly-cooked curry. Just to be sure it was all fine to eat, Monodramon asked to taste the food and his two partners agreed. The noble Monodramon proceeded to eat up the food, tasting it all, but being generous enough to leave the yucky green things to his partners. They were needless worried now that they ate all the food they wouldn’t be able to cross the desert. Fortunately for them, Monodramon was really smart and just needed to eat a little to come up with a brilliant idea. Monodramon grabbed the digivice and evolved the two friends into birdramons.
“Good! Now we can return safely and quickly!” One of his companions exclaimed. Monodramon nodded and off they were, after a little bit of bickering over which one would get to carry Monodramon. Silly them. They even neary caught up to the trailmon in a few hours, and the trailmon apologized for dropping them. Before Monodramon could say how fine it was though, a big meanie Volcanicdramon appeared and attacked the trailmon. While he really wanted to go the place he was going to faster, the Monodramon heroically decided to instead fight the Volcanicdramon with his two companions. They managed to pull away the meanie digimon and chase him down to a volcano, where they fought with all their had, attacks going from side to side, the volcano itself shaking with the raging, amazing battle until at last the Volcanicdramon was of course, defeated.
It was getting late that day, so the tamer and his digimon stopped a bit outside of the volcano to enjoy themselves around some relaxing, well-deserved fireworks. They talked all night about how amazing the others were, especially Monodramon. He was really happy he became human and had now found companions who would never abandon him ever.
“Woooow! This story is pretty great! But a little easy…” The little in-training stated. Monodramon petted their head…body… head-body.
“Isn’t that fine though? It’s a story, it should have a happy ending. But I am glad you are liking it.”
“What kind of things are you teaching that child?” someone popped out of the bushes, and Monodramon’s face went beet red.
“Rain! How long…”
“I’ve been here the whole time. Listened to the whole story so far, but I think it’s lacking. It’s not a good bedtime story if it does not have a good morale.”
“What are you talking about? I think miss M.M.’s story is great! It needs no borable to be good! Right miss M.M.?”
“Right. But it’s mister, not miss.”
The in-training’s eyes went wide with surprise for a moment.
“Really?”
Monodramon simply nodded.
“I am the only female here.” Rain stated. The in-training turned to Rain and bounced towards her.
“So, how would you tell the story miss Rain?”
“Well, if you insist, I shall complete the story to a satisfying conclusion.” She cleared her throat and Monodramon crossed his arms, pouting.
The monodramon thought he couldn’t be happier now that he was human and had a digivice, but something tugged at him inside as he celebrated with his friends. It was an odd feeling, one he didn’t understand completely yet. He understood only that it had something to do with his friends calling him amazing when in fact, he had not done a single thing of use.
It was not him who evolved, it was not him who carried things or searched for things, it was not him who fought. After all, how could he be? He was but human now and humans couldn’t fight on par with digimon. They could only watch from the sidelines. But this realization didn’t fully hit him, he didn’t fully take it in until the next morning, when after waking up, they found themselves captured by a group of mere goblimons. Of course, they were weak, but the group (tamer and digimons) was separated. The former Monodramon struggled with those simple ropes he could have once cut with his teeth or claws while the goblinmon he could’ve once blown away with a single attack were now laughing at his face, pointing fingers and mocking him as he struggled on the ground. They threatened to sell him away to a datamon for experiments or to others who had more…nefarious purpose for humans. They threatened to beat him and to take away the digivice he liked so much. All of this because he couldn’t stop them, so they could do to him anything they wanted.
Just because he was human now.
The monodramon felt truly, utterly, helpless. Maybe the monodramon was amazing, but even amazing humans are still powerless before digimon. At the moment he came to this realization, his two friends jumped out of the bushes, having already defeated the goblinmons that attacked THEM, and quickly rescued their helpless tamer. That night, having escaped doom at the hands of mere goblimons, Monodramon went to check up on his two friends to ask them for advice. He witnessed then as, beneath the moonlight the two were beautifully practicing their digimon-only martial arts. It was at that moment that Monodramon missed being a digimon the most. He realized he couldn’t bear to go on like this. He realized he needed to go back.
The next day, the group decided to travel to master Dorbickmon’s dojo to look for answers. There they found none other but the great and wise master himself, Dorbickmon, who quickly taught Monodramon the secret to liberating himself from this human form. He had to return to the volcano where they defeated the Volcanicdramon and throw the digivice inside. It was a lot harder than it seemed though, because an evil digimon was now guarding the volcano and had amassed goblimons and many of their kind to take revenge on the new tamer. Still, with the help of his two friends, Renamon and Shoutmon, especially the Renamon, Monodramon managed to reach in what would be no less than a three movie-long epic quest. There were many betrayals and doubts and narrow escapes, but those are a story for another time. At last though, he stood before the volcano where he ought to toss the digivice. The monodramon gazed down at it, recalling the joy he received from the little digital gadget, from becoming human, yet he recalled the pain and the feeling of uselessness too. He hesitated. He knew what he had to do, but his hand wouldn’t let go of the thing. Suddenly, he heard shouting outside. Riding a huge Machinedramon was a blue haired human with an evil smirk on his face. The machinedramon, despite being a mega level digimon, was visibly injured from the valiant fight that had been taking place outside between it and the two friends of the Monodramon, but now the mechanical dragon digimon held those two great warriors with it’s heavy claws.
“Hahaha! It is my win. Because I am a human, but I am an evil human. And you are good, but still human. Because you are human you cannot reach me on top of this machine dramon which I control with this evil digivice!” The evil human mocked the Monodramon.
“No, not today!” The Monodramon closed his eyes and threw out the digivice.
“Noooooooooooo!” Screamed the evil human, sensing his incoming defeat. As the digivice splashed into the volcano’s water, the monodramon’s human form began to glow, returning him to his original form. But because he’d learned his lesson, it did even more than that! Not only did he return to being a digimon, but it returned his memories of the FCF Techniques, and evolved him into a powerful Omnimon! The omnimon rushed towards the Machinedramon, using the FCF Strike to pierce right through the terrible digimon and allow his friends to escape. The evil human was in shock and barely realized that as the machinedramon tumbled to the side, both he and the evil human fell right into the volcano. The former Monodramon and his two friends cheered and returned to the dojo, where the friends would become disciples of the new Omnimon and learn from him everything about the FCF Strike. The end.
"And so, you should always be proud of who you are. A digimon." Rain concluded.
“Eh? What kind of ending is that?” Complained Monodramon. “That’s just what you want!”
“But my story was a lot more nuanced and epic. Wasn’t it?” Rain turned to the little digimon who was watching her with glee and excitement.
“Yes miss Rain! I loved it!”
