The Cat is Under the Table [Syre] [Career]

True, the DemiDevimon could have proven to be dangerous - but that was the same for pretty much anyone here! However, as this was largely a public place, Syre hoped that her impromptu opponent would have the common sense not to try anything like that - or, if she did, that someone around her would be able to help out.
Either way, it seemed that this winged demon was willing to take her up on a game, but not with the Poker deck that was already on the table. No, she wanted to play... UNO?! Were this back at the club, Syre might have been flabbergasted - she was being treated like a kid, and she knew it! Apparently, she hadn't done enough to try and separate herself from Amelie - and because she had such ties to a human, she was being underestimated.
However, Syre didn't wear any of this on her face. On the job she was on, she returned a chuckle: "Well, I know how to play, anyway!" Simple enough: the BlackGatomon would sit across her. Right now, though, the cat knew that the DemiDevimon had little reason to talk to Syre: if she wasn't going to talk to a human, what would she do with a human's pet other than humor her?
No, the cat needed to up the game a bit: "But how about we make it interesting? Nothing you even really need to bet: just, if we win, you'll tell us about that 'ruckus'... and if you win?" She shrugged: "I'll cover your tab."
Confident kitty... but surely the Picomon couldn't complain about that deal. Even if she lost, all she lost was words! Picking up her seven cards, Syre gave them a brief glance over. For just a moment, her giddy tone fell away to one of complete focus. Though, really, blink and you might miss it.

PicoDevimon began to deftly shuffle her deck of maybe hundred-something cards. She listened to the BlackTailmon's offering, her eyes gleaming with what could only be described as gambler's eagerness.
"Interesting, huh?" She hummed as she dealt the cards. "I like interesting, even though you should be aware that I haven't lost a UNO game in a long, long time. I'll be impressed if you manage to pull it off."
Of course, being a game that was largely based on one's luck, that claim was... an interesting proposition, but it wasn't like it was worth to delve too deep into it. Their hands being dealt. The digimon gave another look at her opponent. "Why so curious about the recent events in these lands? I can say that... they're pretty much commonplace and pretty much nobody cares unless they're directly affected by it. That's intriguing."
And thus, the game began. Cards began flying into the board on a game that seemed pretty tied, plus cards occasionally creating a small rift that quickly mended itself. It was a close game, if Amelie had seen them.
But... it wasn't like she had any control over it. The most the brunette could do was just wait and hope that Syre had caught most of her lessons at UNO.

"Wow... then I guess I'm in for a challenge!"
It was hard to tell just how long a 'long, long time' was, but the DemiDevimon's confidence was quickly noted by the cat. Still, UNO was such a simple game in itself, that it wouldn't have surprised her to know that one who knew the tricks to the game could outfox someone who didn't. Her ear gave a twitch at the question of the events at hand, to which the cat just gave a shrug: "Commonplace over here, maybe - out in the city, we don't have any of that stuff floating around. As for why, well, maybe I'll tell ya later!"
For now, UNO! The game, of course, was even by definition: went first, and the rest went as expected for the first few hands. Cards were played down when they could, and drawn when they couldn't. Skips, Reverses, and Draw 2s occasionally made a difference, but early hands were down to low scores and complete randomness... which is how it would be.
Until they went through the whole deck the first time. Throughout, Syre was simply being her jovial self, less reserved around a fun game - and in that hand, the demon would quickly be brought to an UNO, Syre still holding four cards. Syre looked flustered... but no matter how long that hand took, it would seem the PicoDevimon would always be forced to draw a card. Somehow, Syre never put down a card that matched what she was holding, even drawing a card herself - even though she could play that obvious 'Blue 3' on that 'Red 3'.
Having gone through the entire deck, Syre knew that the devil was holding a Blue 9. Low on cards, she would have always been forced to play from the top of the deck, whereas Syre seemed to be cycling around the cards in her hand around a size of five. Behind? Not at all:
"Let's see... Green Draw 2, Red Draw 2, Blue Draw 2. Blue Skip - UNO! - and Blue 3."
Well that was... a hand. PicoDevimon was forced to draw 6 cards on top of that Blue 9 she was holding - among them were two reverses, one trade hands, and even a Wild Draw 4! "Let's see... 99 points on that hand, right? Puts me right at 123!"
Amelie would know very well, even before today, that Syre knew how to count cards. Still, the cat tried to play it off, chuckling at that set of cards in front of her. "Well, we did play half the deck I guess... fun game!"

Ultimately, the PicoDevimon found herself enjoying a game that managed to go back and forth, yet... ultimately ended up in Syre's favor. She had played well, and knew that the victory of the BlackTailmon had been well-earned.
The barkeep's expression seemed to be pretty surprised at the development, while Amelie smiled while finishing her drink. It's true that it had some alcohol, but not nearly enough to impair her senses in a meaningful way.
On her stead, the digimon just began to pick the cards again. "Well, indeed! That was a very good game and... a promise is a promise, I guess. Perk your ears up, because I won't repeat this twice."
After a small pause, the PicoDevimon began to speak again. "There's this weird pink jello that crawled to another settlement near here; we're expecting on it being done for good, and then, kinda surprisingly... the thing backed off after reaching that cave in the distance. Other digimon have ventured there to see if that place had anything special, but most of them have returned empty-handed. Maybe the place has something to do with this place is unaffected by the pink jello? I'm unsure, but I really hope that's the case."
She made a small pause, taking a drink from the mug on the table. "If you have any specific question, ask them now. I have places to be and games to play, so make it quick."
Of course, it wasn't like the digimon had infinite patience, either!

It was definitely a fun game... well, as fun as UNO could offer, Syre figured. DemiDevimon definitely knew the basics of this game... much more than she would have figured someone on the side of the Digital World to know. And it wasn't as if this rookie was a Terminus or Whitewater resident, where it would have made a little more sense.
Just who was she? What was her relation to humans, and why did she dislike them?
Eh, Syre didn't stick on that line of thought for long. "Mm, I'm listening!" Helping to pick up the cards, soon slipping them back into the box. Her ear flicked at the DemiDevimon's reasoning, and, well, it was pretty sparse. There was at least one point of interest: the D-Reaper (or 'pink jello') seemed to be residing in a cave, rather than spreading out further - and it sounded like all the Digimon that were sent out to investigate simply safely returned, with little ill effect. Something didn't sit right with her though:
"The Vilemon mentioned you in particular - have you been out to the cave yourself?" The cat gave a small, curious tilt of her head. "And even if they didn't 'bring back much', were they at least able to see something?"
If that was all she had, they woulda done a touch better just to go to the cave in the first place! Well, maybe...

Of course, the questions wouldn't just end there, the PicoDevimon had predicted that, and understandably knew that she would have to explain a couple things more to the fledgling Tailmon.
"Well, that guy over there may have said a lot of things, but if there's one that he ain't, that's precise. I was there, yes; but I didn't face that pink jello directly. Do you think I'm suicidal or something?" She made a small pause, bringing back her previous deck as she began to deal yet another solitaire hand. "I was wandering the area when a group of hairless monmons from the so-called 'adventurers guild' with their digimon pets get in there in hopes of finding something not long ago. They just said that they didn't find anything and that it was a pity on their way out."
Sure, things weren't as easy; and the Tailmon had been a worthy opponent, so... "Yet... they talked about a ledge that they couldn't cross or something. It's probably a red herring, but who knows. Maybe you and your friend will be able to find something that the others couldn't."
Her expression was enough to tell that the conversation was meant to end right there. It wasn't like the digimon had a lot more to say, anyway.

PicoDevimon didn't know as much as the Vilemon said she did?
Honestly, that was fair enough: the bar was a rumor mill, and it was easy for information to get twisted back-and-forth like that. Despite not knowing the name, it seemed clear that she knew the danger of the D-Reaper - or at the very least, that it was dangerous. Putting the last of the UNO cards away, Syre closed the box, pushing them back towards her informant.
"A ledge they couldn't cross, hm?" The cat seemed a bit curious about that, but it was clear that she didn't know too much about it. Rather, Syre simply took that idea in mind, and gave her a small nod. "Alright, thanks for your help. Maybe I'll be back around for another game." Deciding to leave it on a more positive note, Syre gave a smile, waving as she pulled away from that chair - before climbing back up on the one next to Amelie.
"It seems we weren't the only ones who've poked around in that cave. Guess they didn't even know how to start looking."
She paused for a moment - then gave a chuckle, "Then again, neither do we."

With a silent nod, PicoDevimon acknowledged Syre's words as she abandoned the table. Finally, she could have her solitaire game in peace.
Of course, Amelie herself wasn't aware of the exchange between both digimon, and couldn't but quirk a brow at Syre's words after she returned. Her drink had been finished some time ago, probably in celebration of her niece's victory at a children's card game. Even if words couldn't be heard, gestures only took a casual glance to interpret, especially on obvious things like victory or defeat.
"Sounds like that was a pretty... interesting expedition. I take they didn't find anything concise on this situation? That's... interesting." After all, how hard could it be for anyone to find at least a bit of info about a being that was famous for being as subtle as a car crash? It was a bit baffling, in all honesty. "I guess that... we don't have any leads, either? Or you got something interesting from that PicoDevimon?"
In any case, they had two options, more or less. Keep asking around, even if the bartender had pointed the small digimon as their best at information or... venture to the cave themselves. A small trip was in order, apparently!

"I'm not going to lie..." Taking a sip from her half-full soda, Syre gave a sigh. "The PicoDevimon seemed to know about as much as anyone else. She was part of an expedition group that went out to the cave - but, well, nothing happened. No-one was hurt, but they couldn't determine anything other than that the 'pink jello' was there."
"Though, there was one thing: they mentioned that there was a 'ledge' that they couldn't get across." What did that mean? "I don't know if its because the opening was too small on the bottom or that it was entirely caked in the D-Reaper so they couldn't risk climbing the wall - but it seems that there's at least part of the cave that hasn't been explored yet. So, that would be about the one lead we have!"
And that was better than nothing! Past that, she gave another sip of her drink, taking a brief glance around the bar. It didn't seem likely that there was another lead here, so Syre offered a simple suggestion:
"So how about we check it out ourselves?"

Rather understandably, Syre's intel gathering hadn't yielded great results, even though a rather juicy detail was exposed.
"Well, at least having a lead is better than nothing at all. You did well." Nodding at the development, the course of action was more or less obvious by this point, wasn't it? "If nobody was injured, then that means it should be safe for us to investigate."
Yup. The BlackTailmon had more or less read her mind regarding the cave. Amy stood up, and after waiting for her niece to do the same, she proceeded to make her way out of the Village.
"So, how was your first investigative endeavor? You did a pretty great job, but I wanna hear the details myself." After all, the ultimate objective of this small outing was for Syre to gain a relative measure of independence. Mikemon was a good father, but he could be a bit overbearing at times. In all honesty, that was a... pretty interesting contrast, all things considered.
It would be a relatively small trip, but soon enough; the group found themselves staring at the cave's maw. Outwardly, it didn't look like it was out of place, but considering that they knew for sure that something wasn't quite right inside, they probably had to be a bit cautious about it.
"Ready when you are."

Syre nodded back at that small bit of praise - and it was true, if it was safe to at least poke a head into the cave, no reason that these two also couldn't check it directly out! Finishing her soda, the cat stretched her arms, and gave a small hop down off the chair. Of course, Auntie wanted the details: just how did it go?
"Mm... well, you saw the start of it." Making her way out of the bar - so that the DemiDevimon wouldn't overhear too much - she explained a bit of it. "The Vilemon said she wasn't good with humans, and, well, she already saw you and me together, so I put the information on a bet instead. That way, she'd be more likely to talk to me. Even if she thought of me as 'some human's Digimon', she would probably still talk out of respect of the game than anything else? I mean, it was UNO: I just waited for the deck to turn once over and... um... counted cards."
She gave a small chuckle at that, biting her lip. "I think it went well enough, though maybe I could have been a bit firmer asking questions? I dunno, but there's a lot of eyes on you in there... a bit scary." It was nice to get her own chance to work through these sorts of things...
... And as they made their way to the cave, the BlackGatomon would take a small look inside. Indeed, there wasn't much from the outside, but after a glance, Syre already started off: "Just a sec... let's see..."
She took a look at the front of the cave, picking up a piece of discarded plastic - a spent glowstick. "Looks like they used something like this to mark the front of the cave? Hm..." She didn't think that far ahead, but she did pull out a flashlight - quietly clicking it on, aiming it towards the cave floor. "I'll lead - stay close behind, kay?"
After all, if Auntie wasn't evolved into a spirit, Syre was the more 'battle-ready' of the two of them!

It was an interesting tale, that much the brunette could say.
Now that they were out of the bar, and that there was no need to hold back for any details. Her plan had been simple, yet smart, and the results had been undeniable since she had gotten the information. "I still wonder why that DemiDevimon wasn't a big fan of humans, but I guess it's not our place to ask."
As intriguing as that could be, that wasn't the reason why they were here. Giving a small dismissive wave with her hand, Amelie dismissed Syre's following notion. "If I've learned something about the Dark Area, is that its inhabitants don't like pushy people. You got enough information and you can count on me being proud of my little girl."
She was smiling by now, even though those words would probably make the BlackGatomon feel embarrassment rather than encouragement, but that's what your older relatives usually did, so that was fine.
By that time, they were now right outside the cave, and while Amelie was already making the motions to enter, she was stopped on her tracks. Apparently, Syre was searching for something. "Oh, that's interesting. Do you think there's another group? exploring this place on top of the one that the DemiDevimon saw leave? It'd be interesting stumbling upon them, depending on who they are."
But, for now... she accepted her niece's role as leader, prompting her to lead the way. It was true that she could always evolve in a whim, but this was probably the safest way to go around it. Or at least that's what the brunette thought.

"Not liking humans was one thing - I just want to know how she got her hands on a human game." Curious, but not important enough for Syre to have asked.
Judging by Amelie's follow-up, Syre's method was more-or-less right, though she did give a small embarrassed look in her face on being called 'Amy's little girl'. She would have liked to say she'd grown out of those words, but with no-one else around, she simply let her ears flatten out for a moment, and let it slide off of her back.
After all, they had a cave to explore! Flicking that discarded glow-stick off to the side, the cat gave a shrug: "If they were still in there, wouldn't the glowstick still have some light left in it? If that's the case, I hope there's not another group inside..." She speculated, but that pessimistic tone wasn't kept for long. After all, there were no cries of panic coming from inside the cave, so it was more likely that the DemiDevimon's group simply left a bit of litter behind.
Leading along, Syre would keep a careful pace. She took care to keep the light low, creeping it up just a bit over time to look for anything that might trip them up. Stepping further into the darkness, over a few cracks and under some narrow spots, they'd eventually come to that red, luminescent mass: the D-Reaper. A sickly red light pulsed out from the mass, coating the walls and a bit of the floor inside - but there were no agents, no 'defenses' set up.
A bit wary, the BlackGatomon took a careful look closer. "Hm... dad said the D-Reaper appears to eat corrupted areas of data. So why would it be so far out of the way of where there would be any fights?"
She took a look around the cave walls, passing the flashlight over them. "Unless this isn't a natural cave... maybe something burrowed down here at some point?"
That thought, once said, made her give a nervous chuckle. "Eheh... s-stay close, Amy."

To Amelie, digimons getting human games wasn't that uncommon, admittedly. The Digital World was big, and if one looked enough, being able to afford even the most exotic Human World articles wasn't something out of the ordinary.
"I mean, you can probably get a deck of UNO cards on Terminus if you know where. That DemiDevimon seemed to be smart enough, so... maybe? How she found out about the game seems to be the most puzzling question, even though that can be attributed to chance too."
She picked up the cue; apparently, that calling her little girl was embarrassing for her? It was a sign that she was growing, at the very least! And, besides, what was an aunt's function, if not to embarrass your niece with corny nicknames every now and then? It was more or less her obligation, mostly!
The brunette had to admit Syre had a point, however. "You're probably right about that." The lightstick was probably something that the people who had visited some time ago had left, not tracks of a recent expedition. Considering how the area was deserted and it didn't show any signs of previous fights, it was probably safe to advance... but one never really knew.
Following along, the group eventually stumbled upon the D-Reaper. Its presence didn't seem to be notorious, just pouring from the cracks on the floor. Yet... it was no less alarming. "I'm wondering why it isn't active. In every rumor and report I've gotten, the D-Reaper is associated with wanton destruction and assimilation of nearby areas. Yet, in here... it almost looks like a fungus, slowly growing in the darkness. Why do you think that's the case?"
Her own questions overlapped a bit with her niece's, yet she couldn't deny that her hypothesis had some credit. "Do you mean that... somebody or... something in here is keeping the D-Reaper in a quasi-dormant state? Or that it's actually searching for that."
Losing herself a bit on her thoughts, she proceeded to nod at Syre's warning. "Don't worry. We can get out of this place in the blink of an eye if we need to and... since taking samples isn't possible at all... should we try to avoid this and try to get to the root cause, or do you think that's too dangerous?"
In any case, Amelie would proceed to take some pictures of the strange phenomenon.

Chance, maybe! It was a curiosity, but then again, every 'mon had their own story to tell - it wasn't worth sticking one's nose in everyone's business.
Leaving it at that, it didn't take long for the two to get in the cave, and Amelie's first curious question made the cat's ear flicker. Indeed, compared to the day that the statue shattered, the D-Reaper here seemed more-or-less tame. It probably still burned to the touch - Mikemon expressly gave her warning to avoid contact whenever possible - but it didn't seem to be actively trying to attack either of them. No, this was more a slow lichen coating the floors and the walls - there was a decent amount of it, but not so much that the pair couldn't make their way deeper into the cave.
"Maybe it has no need to be active?" Syre proposed another theory: "The data of the cave itself might be corrupt, but there's no need for it to try and 'make' anything to defend itself if nothing's trying to fight it. This might be closer to its natural state..." And true, with the portal, it would be easy enough to get out. Relaxing somewhat at Amelie's protection, the pair would continue on - until they'd reach that gap the DemiDevimon talked about.
The end of the cave, and the ledge. As expected, it seemed that the cave itself came to an abrupt end, but a quick flick of the flashlight upward revealed a... well, actually, a decently large opening, right atop a rocky ledge. Alone, it might have been easy to climb up and slip in, but the very wall itself was coated with the D-Reaper, thick lines of it streaming out from the ledge, like a thick ivy taking up the wall. It was easy to see why they didn't try and proceed past this point. At this rate, would they be forced to turn around as well?
"... I wonder if there is a way..." She took a brief look around the cave itself. There had to be something deeper in, explaining it - but how could they get there?
