“No need to… be active, huh? That’s an interesting notion, if I have heard it. Maybe the D-Reaper isn’t a senseless force of destruction like everyone thinks. Still, finding out the reason why it isn’t active in here would be a boon to the collective effort against it. Maybe it is after something in specific, and this place has none of it? I guess there can be plenty of possible explanations and is our task to find out.”
Regarding the ledge? It seemed to be easy enough to get past it as long as the group had the necessary means to advance through without touching anything D-Reaperish. This, in essence, wasn’t that hard for Amelie!
She gazed at Syre, looking at the ledge while pondering; it would be really unlikely for her to touch those bits, or was there some risk? At least for the brunette, it seemed safe enough! “I guess we gotta fly. Let’s do this.”
Her D-Tector was brought out, a data arc already circling through her right hand. A quick motion afterward, Driftermon was standing where the human had previously stood. Its tendrils made a quick gesture, as if signaling for the niece to just… ride her. And if she did, she’d just cross the ledge very carefully, making sure neither Syre nor it came in contact with the strange substance.
Soon enough, they'd find themselves on the other side. The question was... what now?

"Looking for something that's not here would be kind of tricky - well, I guess we gotta play it by ear either way, right?" Returning a small chuckle to her auntie's point, Syre returned her focus to the ledge. No matter how she pieced it together, there was just no way that she alone could manage. Scaling the wall was easy, sure, but in a way that would avoid contact with the red material? Maybe they could try and burn it away, but then again, what if this 'lichen' was all that was left keeping the wall in place?
Fortunately, Syre didn't need to have an answer - Amelie had one! Seeing that D-Tector drawn, Syre gave a step back, as her auntie took the shape of, well, a relatively person-shaped amalgamate of purple tendrils and stark white bones. As nice as her auntie was, her spirits always made Syre a touch nervous, but with a nod, she'd climb aboard - easily whisked away upward and past the ledge, through a narrower pass than it seemed from below. Still, there was enough of an opening that the two would be able to make their way through, a good five feet, before the cave would open up again.
Inside? Syre gave a blink, shielding her eyes from a red light that soaked through the area, budding from the 'center' of this rocky clearing. Directing Driftermon down to the left, to a 'clean' patch of rock, they would be able to better take a stock of this room, where the D-Reaper's lichen stretched across the floor, the walls, and the ceiling in a fibrous, spider-like pattern. It all culminated near the center of the room, the source of that red light.
"What in blazes..."
Syre didn't know what to make of it: at the center of this room was a spirit totem - not one that called out to Amelie's own, but of a powerful-looking avian spirit. Around it was a stark, cracking green sphere of energy, as if pushing back against the encroaching D-Reaper. Like a plant, the Reaper's roots had spread across the center, half-enveloping that barrier like an egg. This definitely seemed like the source, Syre gritting her teeth at the sight.
"It feels like its struggling." Her tone was short, but quiet, as if fearing the D-Reaper would overhear!

It was funny; Amelie could sense Syre's unease. And understood it, in all honesty,
Hadn't these spirits been a permanent fixture on her daily life, she would probably feel pretty uneasy about them too. That was beside the point; given that her senses were a little addled on her evolutions, and that was to say the least, she appreciated Syre's directions, even though she probably was a bit unused to finding her words falling on deaf ears.
Overall, it didn't matter; as long as they kept physical contact, their thoughts were more or less shared, and since you usually had to ponder about something before speaking, the Driftermon could more or less interpret the intent behind her niece's thoughts.
Eventually, they were able to land on a clean patch of rock. It didn't take eyes to discern what was happening there, and why the cave was flooded by the D-Reaper's influence and... the spirit totem currently residing in the cave? Huh, that was curious.
"Do you see it too...?" The voice of the brunette's spirits was weird to say the least, yet it resonated somewhat clearly inside the BlackGatomon's mind. "The totem is trapped."
There was a vague sense of certainty in those words, but also... "What do you think that would happen if we try to free it? If the D-Reaper is so focused on restraining it, chances are that's something pretty important."

As 'bizarre' as Amelie's spirits were, this wasn't Syre's first time seeing them - and as such, her auntie's method of communication was something the cat had grown used to. Perhaps it had been frightening at first, but now, Syre even kept a careful hand around one of the Driftermon's tendrils, to make sure that Amelie could keep in line with the cat's thoughts.
It made them an interesting duo, and the scene before them was perhaps their first real test. Amelie's words confirmed what the cat already knew, Syre gritting her teeth slightly at the sight of it. That poor spirit was trapped, struggling against the encroaching grip of the D-Reaper. Who knew just how long that barrier would stay up? Her ear gave a twitch at Amelie's other points.
Just what would happen if they tried to free it? Syre's mind focused on that question, but with her limited knowledge on the subject, her thoughts were a bit scattered. It burned on touch, but if they acted so openly, would the D-Reaper try to grab and ensnare them? Would an agent bud and try and fight them inside the cave? Even if they got through it, if one of them touched the totem, would the spirit within possess them? Heck, what would dad think if she tried something so reckless?
The Driftermon would feel each passing thought, each bit of unease, as Syre tried to piece it together in her head. There was obviously so much that could go wrong, that could go against them... gah, no, that wasn't important! The BlackGatomon lowered and shook her head, clearing her head as best as she could. Instead of focusing on the negatives, the cat started to think forward. Maybe they could cut forward with a Saberk, or maybe they could burn at the edges of those tendrils. Seeing that sparking barrier in the distance, Syre gave a slow, calm breath out.
The words she spoke matched her thoughts, point for point:
"Don't know. But don't we have to try?"

Of course, sharing thoughts at real time was a... pretty interesting experience and Syre having enough trust in Amelie to open a direct channel into her mind was an amount of trust that she both treasured and appreciated. And that wasn't betraying for anything in the world. With such powers, using them responsibly was a priority.
Yet, that was a secondary concern at the moment; they were in the face of something that could be truly terrifying, yet... that was holding something hostage; a spirit that, while not hers for sure, was struggling against a corrupting force. Of course, she remained alert in case their inactive foe happened to not be as dormant as it appeared to be; truth was that this could go awry at any moment and that the Driftermon wanted to get out as quickly as possible in case it did.
She could feel the doubt within the BlackGatomon's mind as a storm, her judgment torn on doing something potentially dangerous or just letting it be... yet her own thoughts finally echoed with what Amy herself thought. This was their chance; they could make a difference in here, and... in all honesty, that was the right thing to do.
"We really have no choice, I'm afraid." If Driftermon had a mouth, she would definitely smile; in a sense, she liked how, ultimately, their minds aligned towards the same goal. Even if it was dangerous, they just had to try.
"I can try and burn some of that goo; maybe then it'd be softened enough for you to do cut them out? I'm open to other ideas if you have anything better than that; chances are that we'll get only one shot at trying to free that totem before having to get the hell out of this place."

It was really that simple, wasn't it? Feeling Driftermon's emotion shift through her, Syre 'returned' Amelie's unspoken smile, a nod given to those mental words. Fire to burn away the D-Reaper, and a blade to cut through the tendrils. "Let's see..."
Extending her right arm out to the side, Syre gave a 'test', creating a Saberk blade in her right hand. The BlackGatomon's eyes were focused on the nearest tendrils of the D-Reaper, both tense and curious as to if the mass would react. As it would turn out, however, the D-Reaper remained passive. "Alright - so long as we don't attack it directly, it doesn't seem like the stuff is interested in us."
This gave Syre more time - the Saberk could imitate any blade, after all, and comprised of energy, it would hardly have any weight. Knowing this, the cat made a long, curved sword, a scimitar with a blade nearly the size of her body. Holding it off to the side, she carefully drew her focus forward. "More than the method though, we need to be fast. Go in, grab the totem, get out." With a sigh, she carefully stood. She trusted Amelie to know what to do: with as little ground as there was to work with, Syre was going to have to 'fly' with her auntie, just like they had done when they got into the cave. So, waiting for her aunt to start the charge, she gave a nod:
"Let's do it."

The plan had already been formed. Burn the offending jelly, then cut out what remained, then snatch the totem and get the hell out. As solid as it could be, even though their chances of pulling it out weren't necessarily great. Making sure that Syre was safe on top of her, Driftermon took to the skies.
"Okay, on my mark, I'll burn the D-Reaper, then you'll slice it, and if the totem comes off, I'll try to snatch it... then we're flying away as fast as we can. Hang on tight!"
She approached carefully, knowing that one misstep could throw a spanner in the works while preparing herself for the eventual climax of their little adventure. Mentally, she inhaled deeply as her mind went through the motions.
"One. Two. Now!" Immediately, a stream of flames engulfed the area, enveloping everything around them, and hopefully weakening the encroaching tendrils. There wasn't time to lose, so as soon as the slash that hopefully severed what remained of the D-Reaper touching the spirit totem was performed, a tendril would immediately spring and try to yank it from it was currently located.
Simultaneously, and thanks to the ever-handy D-MR, the digimon would gain a pretty hefty speed boost, and proceed to float at full throttle out of the cave. Even if she could perceive what was happening, most of her senses were focused on getting out as smoothly as possible.

Their plan was set - re-verified in each-other's minds - and the BlackGatomon gave a nod. Once more perched on the glorified 'back' of the Driftermon, Syre brought her focus forward. "On your mark, Amy."
One... two... three! Right in line with her auntie's motions, Syre tensed her hand around the ethereal base of that blade as the two lurched forward! The fire itself seemed to do the trick, as the D-Reaper naturally receded away from the heat. Perhaps as expected, the mass was a little more problematic around the barrier and the totem itself, but that was what the Saberk was for!
There! One quick slice of that blade was more than enough to cut through the encroaching D-Reaper, and Driftermon's tendril was easily able to slip past and grip around the totem. Even better, whatever spirit was inhabiting it didn't try to possess the 'non-user' who tried to touch it! All seemed well, as they would turn to try and bank out of the cave -
"Gah!" Scratch that! Just as they would turn to try and slip past, that encroaching tendril of that red mass bubbled back, snaked out, and managed to get a grip on Syre's ankle! She hadn't noticed with her focus on the plan at first, but as Amelie pulled away, the sudden catch of the slack forced her to jolt back! Eyes wide, she gripped tight around the Driftermon's tendrils, angrily shooting a gaze back down at that... that stuff!
Damn it!

The slice was strong and clean, Driftermon's grip is strong enough to yank out the totem, even if it hadn't been without consequences. Truth was that Amelie's reaction had been too slow, and even if that had been for a second or a fraction of one, and for that reason, Syre's ankle had been gripped by the strange substance.
Obviously, Driftermon's first reflex was to immediately stop, then lash at the offending matter, trying to sever it from it from her niece's ankle. Amelie didn't care if she got injured in the process, or on how much the D-Reaper could burn; she wasn't leaving Syre behind no matter what.
As stupid as it sounded, it was both or neither. And neither were going down without a fight, that much was obvious. Right now, the only thing Amelie wanted was for the freaking thing to just come off so they could get out.

Syre wasn't about to just let herself be pulled in by the D-Reaper's grip, either. After her initial shout of pain, righting herself as best as she could in the Driftermon's grip, the BlackGatomon turned her focus back down at that offending tendril. If it was anything like the one that she had just cut through, all they had to do was destroy it and slip out, right?
Along with Amelie, Syre swung her blade down, attempting to pierce through the tendril in one go - but, somehow, it wasn't that simple. The grip tightened as the swipe of the blade and Amelie's lashing bounced off what felt like a tight cable - one that had quite a firm hold on the cat's foot. Tch... if that's not enough...
At this point, Syre didn't know exactly what was going through her head. All she knew was that she needed more strength than that last swing: tensing her hand once more, she simply 'willed' all the power she had into that Saberk - and, as if she had done it a thousand times before, a harsh cold aura surrounded the energy blade. At the same time, a small flash of light blinked from the cat's tail, as she gave that attack:
One more swing. This one easily sliced through the cable, the sudden release of tension surging the cat back solidly into Amelie's grip! Shaking her head, she simply pointed right back towards the cave opening. Right, they didn't need to be there for much longer! In it all, the black ring adorning Syre's tail simply fell into the background:
Just make a cloak of fire and rush all the way out of the cave!

They needed more power, didn't they? The notion of evolving didn't left Amelie's mind for one second, but the truth was that any of her higher forms weren't as practical for the narrow cave and, ultimately, would do more harm than good. If she had any teeth, she'd be gritting them right now. The digimon's only hope was that her strength would be enough for the task at hand, and then do their best at exiting this place as quickly as they could.
Luckily, Syre had an ace in the hole, apparently. Mustering power that Amy didn't know she had, and in a joined effort with the Driftermon, both manage, they managed to break from that unexpected restraint.
Relief washed over for a split second before their situation came back at them; knowing more than well that something like could happen again, fire began vaguely to envelop the two digimon as Driftermon raced towards the exit.
With any luck, there wouldn't be many more inconveniences.

An ace in the hole?
Hardly, this was a sheer fluke - and even now, the BlackGatomon wasn't entirely sure what had happened! All that really mattered was that her leg was free, and the two were once more and the two were free to try and make their escape from the cave. The D-Reaper somehow seemed more active than before - starting to grow and 'crawl' along the walls at a hurried rate - but it still seemed to maintain the properties of lichen. With the veil of fire - and the occasional swing from Syre's blade - it didn't take long for the two to shoot back out over the ledge.
Of course, they would go further than that. With Syre riding Driftermon all the way, the two would find their way out a lot quicker than they made their way in, even if both the cat and Amelie suffered a few scratches on the way out. When they finally cleared that cavern's entrance - and got a good distance away from it - Syre gave a good, long look back towards the cave.
... Nothing. It didn't seem like the D-Reaper would chase them out here.
"Oh thank Sovereign."
Taking a breath out, Syre would step off from Driftermon's back, stand on her own two feet - and immediately regret it. She quickly sat down, wrapping both of her hands around that leg, a faint cold energy radiating out as she tried to cool off her shin. For a moment, she seemed tense... but a few seconds later?
She gave a chuckle, followed by a small laugh! "Freaking... we actually did that! Heh!"

They had to escape, and escape they would. Quickly enough, the environment progressively changed; first the ledge and then, the cave's entrance. Driftermon had left a pretty decent gap between them and the D-Reaper before bothering to check if the thing was actually following them or not, and even then, it still took Amelie several seconds before finally undoing her evolution.
The stress, adrenaline and a multitude of emotions that had been repressed due to the interesting nature of her evolution flooded her mind in a split second as she resisted the urge to just collapse on the spot. Instead, she scooped Syre up and gave her a very tight hug, even if she made sure to try and not touch her obviously-injured leg.
"We did it." She stated, disbelief evident in her voice; that had been pretty extreme! Knowing that her niece probably appreciated the ability to breathe, she let go after a small while. "How's your leg? Do you think you can walk, or do you prefer for me to carry you?"
Given that the BlackTailmon was as light as a feather, that wasn't going to be extremely hard. Still, Amy managed to take a peek at the injured limb, a simple realization making its way towards her mind. That injury would be pretty hard to hide.
Not forgetting to scoop the totem up, some beads of sweat began to form on the brunette's brow, even if she eventually smiled. "Yup! We did it. Even though... your dad is probably going to kill me. And ground you for a good while." Could that statement sound more certain? Unlikely. Sometimes, Mikemon could be scarier than the D-Reaper! "Not looking forward to that, but at least we were successful."
A small sigh escaped her throat before the obvious question was posed. "So, ready to head back?"

They did it, somehow! Still laughing, a tired smile wide across Syre's face, the BlackGatomon soon find herself plucked right off the ground, tightly hugged by her auntie. The cat was taken a bit by surprise, both by the action and the very tight grip that Amelie was giving!
"Nyah!" That 'meow' was more given out of the surprise of the hug than anything else, but fortunately, she was soon let go, allowing the BlackGatomon to try and test her foot. "Let's see... I don't think its that bad - ack!" No, scratch that: one attempt to put weight on it brought the pain right back to her ankle. It was less the burn that gave her problems, but the sudden pull from the 'cable' had managed to torque her foot somewhat. She wanted to try and tough it out, but after a few moments, relented: "Yeah, if you don't mind, go ahead and carry me."
Presumably plucked up into Amelie's grip - the totem either picked up next to her or stored in Amelie's bag - the cat's ear twitched at her aunt's next point. Right... right, dad! "He did tell us not to mess with that stuff, didn't he? Well... well, maybe he'll understand that we were trying to help someone?" That made it alright, right? Surely the punishment wouldn't be too bad? Amelie's tone made it hard for the cat to sound sure.
As for that obvious question? "Um... well, do you have enough for your article, auntie?" That was the whole reason they were down here, right? "If you're ready to go back, I am..."

In the even, Amelie still saw Syre as her little girl, no matter the form or shape; and by this point, that notion was pretty much impossible to eradicate. But it wasn't like that was a bad thing, was it? After all, that's what made their bond so special.
Undoubtedly, it was also what had built so much trust among them, and probably what made Syre comfortable with the idea of her aunt carrying her around. Most other Tailmons would have said no to the idea pretty much instantly! Lest to say, she soon found her way back into the brunette's arms once again.
"You know, this reminds me when you were a SnowBotamon, right out of your egg. You were super cute back then, you know?" After a small pause, she added. "You're still pretty cute, but not white anymore. No big difference, though!"
If Syre could ever recover from Amy's antics bringing an endless amount of embarrassment, she'd realize that the teenager had trod a bit, until they were at a comfortable distance from both the cave and the village. "I hope he understands we did this for a just cause, especially considering he has done the same thing countless time's in the past, and I'd say that the blood runs deep in the family..." Better if she didn't even begin with K. "But I also think he wants to set a good example for you, so he may be harsher than usual with the two of us. After all, can't say that parenting is an easy task and he's probably worried sick; he really cares about you, after all."
Once their small journey was over, Amelie would go through the motions to bring her car out again, making sure to set Syre on the passenger's seat before getting in herself. "I probably have enough info for three articles. This had been quite the trip." Right afterward, she smiled. "Thank you very much."
Now, the only thing left was the long road to The Library. And to prepare for a worried cat's lecture.
