"I'm surprised. It's actually nicer than I thought."
"'Nicer than you thought?' It's beautiful!"
"Kinda looks like a dump if you ask me." Leith and Veemon both looked to the newest member of their team, Shoutmon. While Leith wore a face that was confused and surprised to hear the digimon speak such, Veemon was nonverbally chastising Shoutmon with his expression. "What?"
"Music rule number one: Never insult the venue or the other acts... where they can hear you." "No one heard me!" Shoutmon continued to loudly. "Not yet," Leith continued to chastise him. "Just... be nice. You know? If this goes well, they'll want us back, and we'll get to play again and again and... you know. But not if you're... you."
"What's that supposed to mean?" "Let's be honest: you know what it's supposed to mean." Shoutmon shrugged and huffed indignantly but otherwise gave up on the argument. "So, we want Rosewood Inn. Doesn't sound like a very rockin' venue, but, hey, let's see. Someone let me know when you see it."
The trio began to wander the streets for a little while, then, trying to follow what few signs were around to the right place. Veemon was the one who eventually called out, "Hey, that's it!" and pointed out a building across the street from them.

While they had been a little more disconnected from the digital world than most, eventually the dragon brothers had come to hear of the village. It was a new civilization built in the heart of the Eastern Timberlands, not far from the cradle of life in the digital world itself; apparently founded as a home for newly evolved rookie digimon. That news itself was enough to send the Veemon and Guilmon there right away.
And once there, it was more than they had imagined. Not dozens, but hundreds of digimon seemed to live here. Dozens of buildings were standing, still smelling of freshly cut wood, but all of them glowing on the inside with their own heat and power. And already, there was a feeling of "home" about the village that both Roy and Rex kind of liked.
Roy and Rex were dressed as they usually were; Roy wearing a black-red tunic and Rex wearing a brown-green. Simple garb, considering neither of them wore anything below the waist, but with Roy's blue and white and Rex's red and white lizard-like scales, neither felt the need for more. Their tunics made some in the village notice their origins.
"Oh, hey! You two are from El Doradimon, right?" a Monodramon called. The twins turned their attention to him right away.
"Yep, we sure are" Rex said, a little too quickly for Roy's liking, but, he supposed nothing could be done about that.
"Okay, cool. Just... you know, word to the wise. There's a few humans around here in Rosewood, they've helped build the place, so, just letting you know-"
"Hey, that's okay" Roy interrupted. "Just because we're from El Doradimon doesn't mean we don't like humans. I know we've got a bad rep in that regard, but, from us, there won't be a problem" he assured the other dragon.
"Oh, well, that's great then!" Monodramon beamed. "Hey, you seem like nice guys. I hear the Inn's kinda struggling to hold itself together with all these new arrivals. Sorry to have to ask you this, but, do you think you might be able to help out there?"
This made Roy and Rex instantly interested. "Sure, that won't be a problem!" Rex said eagerly.
"Okay great! I work there too, but, not in any noble role, I just wash the dishes, but, we were kinda short staffed yesterday so I was also helping with serving... it was kind of a mess" he finished with an awkward chuckle. "I'll show you where it is".
Roy and Rex followed Monodramon to the center of the village, where the Inn stood in all its glory. It seemed the builders had expected rather a lot of it, it was a large building with two storeys. The bottom floor was the bar and common area, the upper floors were the sleeping rooms. There was enough space for at least 50 rookie level digimon. And, it seemed, even at this hour, there was plenty of activity.
"Whoa" Roy remarked, turning to Rex. "Well, they clearly need our help, so, let's do this" the Veemon gave an eager grin.
"Hehe, yeah!" Rex agreed. As they made their way toward the building, they noticed others nearby. There was a human heading toward the inn as well. And there were his partners, one of them was a Shoutmon, and the other was a Veemon.
"Huh, that's interesting" Roy mused. Yes, in his travels around the digital world he had met other Veemon, but, never one with a twin like he had with Rex. The two of them entered after them, but didn't introduce themselves right away. First they waited for Monodramon, who would hopefully tell them what they were going to do here in their helping out.

Veemon - the one partnered to Leith, that is - was a little more outgoing, though. This was the little blue digimon's first time seeing one of his own, so soon as he caught sight of his fellow, he ran straight up to the other Veemon and declared himself, "Hiya! I'm Veemon, but, heh, you know that. Your village is really beautiful!" It seemed Veemon had mistaken Rex and Roy for natives.
While Veemon was making new friends, Shoutmon took a look around and had an eyebrow raised curiously. "I take it back. This place is packed!"
Even Leith had to smile at this development. "Nice! Now where's the owner of this..." Looking around, the only digimon who really stuck out seemed to be Monodramon; he just looked like the sort of digimon who probably worked in the place. Stressed but still trying to look friendly? That's definitely our guy. After Leith pointed out the Monodramon, he only then noticed Veemon close-by talking to... another one. Lucky he was able to tell the difference by voice sound, at least. Something tells me I shouldn't bring up how hard it is to tell them apart in front of him, Leith decided before holding out a polite hand to Monodramon. "Making friends, Vee?" he asked before turning to Monodramon. "Hi. Do you work here? We're-"
"Name's Shoutmon!" Unlike Leith who merely held out a hand, Shoutmon assertively took the purple dragon's hand and shook it with a proud smirk. "That's my boy Leith. He plays guitar for me in Haunted Threnody! Heard you needed a little entertainment around here!"
I play guitar for him now, do I? Leith bit his lip, perturbed by how Shoutmon was being, so he tried to salvage the conversation with a softer touch. "We saw a notice for the Rosewood Pub and figured, hey, why not? We've got quite a few followers on Tamernet, so we can definitely bring a crowd in. We'd love to play here some time" Leith neglected to mention that 'quite a few' followers was actually just two replies on a single thread, one of which was from someone he knew. He also figured it wasn't important to add he'd sound nothing like his previous works considering he only had the acoustic guitar on his back to work with. With the money he earned here, though, Leith hoped to invest in some recording and musical equipment he could make function in the digital world, and then Haunted Threnody would be right back on track..

Roy was a little confused by the other Veemon saying that their village was beautiful. He only managed to say "Um." before Rex managed to step in for his shy brother.
"Heh, we just got here ourselves" he said, amused. "And hi there, Veemon. I'm Rex and this is Roy". It was nice to encounter other friendly digimon.
It was lucky that the two Veemon could be identified as different from each other by the fact that Roy was wearing a red and black tunic, which was probably how the Monodramon was able to discern that they were from El Doradimon, as it was a common fashion from that civilization. Other than that, yes, they did look rather similar. That and the white on Roy's front extended to the tip of his tail, just like his brother's.
Monodramon then noticed Leith, who looked up at the human. He was about to answer, but then Shoutmon grabbed his paw and shook it enthusiastically. The purple dragon gave a nervous chuckle.
"Yeah, I work here" he said. "And is that so? You're entertainers?" he looked at Leith's guitar with interest. "That'd be great if you could play here for a night or so. We haven't had live music here yet, so, that'd be awesome if you could do that".
Roy and Rex were interested too. "Oh hey, that sounds neat. We love music" Rex said, beaming.
It seemed that all of them were willing to work here in the inn for the night. Monodramon was pleased. "Alright then. I'll let you guys get settled down and we can start your shifts whenever you're ready. I can get you something to drink in the meantime, it's on the house for employees".
Supposing he'd better make a good first impression, Roy turned to the human and his partners, giving a warm smile. "So, hiya, guess we'll be working together for the night" he spoke, making conversation.

"You're temps, too?" Leith asked curiously, trying to keep his best social smile on. After ordering a little water for himself and his partners, the young man added, "Good to have ya, then."
"Actually," Leith's Veemon piped up then, "Let me help, too, if you still need more, Monodramon. I'm not an entertainer, but I can serve food or clean tables or something, and if I'm out front I can still see you guys play."
"What's this crap?" Shoutmon suddenly piped up when his water arrived. He regarded it with disgust and displeasure.
"It's water, Shoutmon," Leith teased, "It's kinda like beer except it won't screw up your voice, make you forget the words, and it won't give you the idea in your head of trying to pick someone up and bringing them to my place. Why don't we start setting up?"
Setting up was a fairly quick process, at least. Shoutmon just had to summon a mic stand, Leith moved a couple of barstools onstage and Veemon was helpful enough to sit back while Shoutmon adjusted his own levels on his mic until he was loud enough to be heard through the whole place and yet soft enough not to overpower Leith's acoustic guitar. The young man as somewhat afraid he'd have to strum hard as he could just to be almost heard, but it seemed Shoutmon was able to flip a simple switch and turn his directional mic omnidirectional to pick up Leith's guitar a little, too (though the young man had to sit pretty close to get picked up). "Alright... hey, I think that's it. I think we're good to go."
That was the point when Veemon, no longer needed by Leith, returned to Monodramon and asked enthusiastically, "Where d'ya want me, boss?"

Before he left, Monodramon was glad to get help from the other blue dragon. "Actually that'd be really good" he said, smiling. "After all, you Veemons have hands like humans, it'd be terrific if we had two of you doing work. No offense to your friends of course" he nodded at Rex and Shoutmon, given they had less fingers or claws to work with.
Monodramon then chuckled at the reaction to the arrival of drinks. "To be fair it's really good water. Even though it's from the river, well, the rocks make it really pure from upstream..."
Plus there was the fact that employees would not be served alcoholic drinks until the end of their shift. Monodramon had learned this as a sound policy early in the history of Rosewood.
While Leith and Shoutmon were preparing their positions for the performance, Rex and Roy were learning what they had to do in their shift in the inn. It seemed they would be tasked with writing down orders from the customers, reporting them to the kitchen, and then serve the ordered food out, as well as taking the dishes back to the kitchen. This would also seem to be Veemon's job. Rex at first hoped that the guests would be able to distinguish between the two, but that seemed less of a worry when Roy would insist on wearing his tunic even as a waiter, thereby able to distinguish himself from his fellow blue dragon without them having to say something like "That Veemon with the white butt".
Monodramon seemed glad of their preparations so far. And as the clock on the wall approached 6:00pm, he let the new temporary employees know that the serious business of the inn was about to start for the night.
"Just be nice and reliable and we shouldn't have any problems" he told Roy, Rex and Veemon. "And you guys, while I don't want to limit you as artists, could you please play easy-listening songs to start with?"

"Don't worry," Leith assured his boss for the day, "We know our audience. Our set's gonna be a pretty tame one."
"Because heavy metal with nothing but an acoustic sucks."
"You really have no filter, don't you?" Shoutmon's smirk seemed to indicate he both acknowledged this fact and took it as a compliment. "Ha, I like that you pegged me for a heavy guy, though. I take that as a compliment."
Leith and Shoutmon ended up living up to their words; soon as the pair sat down on the bar stools they'd filched, Shoutmon quite civilly greeted the place and in a very unsubtle manner reminded the patrons to tip their servers, something Leith knew was because Veemon was one of those servers. The set itself was quite soft and melodic, counter to the pair's general attitude and appearance. It was mostly covers like "Sweet Child of Mine," "Roadside," and "Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)," but Shoutmon's exceptional natural musicianship let him pick up a couple of Leith's own originals to pad their runtime.
"What is this thing that you call fear? There's no reason for that here, You won't know pain in my oasis, Perfect stasis,
In my land there's a startling lack of drought, And not quite enough famine to go around, But at least we have what we need, Even if we're a bit short on greed..."
Veemon had to admit he felt a tinge of jealousy as he watched Shoutmon perform along side his best friend, the pair of them looking like they were truly having the time of their lives. Still, at least in his opinion, it was good enough to stop and watch for a while whenever he thought he could sneak it in. This led him to be a little slow on his duties, but he hoped neither his patrons nor his coworkers would notice. Actually, the little blue digimon found the work quite satisfying along with getting to socialize with so many new people at once, so the smile part of his 'service with a smile' was completely genuine, even all the way through the shift's end. Monodramon gave a nervous chuckle. "Thanks for that. Personally I love heavy metal music, but, well, we gotta play it the safe way I suppose". Indeed, it would be an unusual move for the only inn in a growing village to suddenly put on a show like that with no warning. Maybe that could wait for later when there were more establishments that could provide for such a variety?
After the break was over and the shift started, the musicians took their places. Meanwhile, Roy and Rex looked uncertainly to Monodramon what their tasks were in all this.
"Roy, you've got the hands, so you can be the server" Monodramon said. "And Rex, sorry to impose this on you, but, you're kind of the biggest rookie level in the room, so, could you please be the doormon?"
"...Doormon?" Rex repeated, tilting his head.
"Oh, uh, well, the digimon to greet guests, and... make sure that troublemakers don't come in and... cause trouble?"
"Ohh, I see" Rex said, blinking. "Well, I can greet guests, but... what do I do with troublemakers?"
"You politely ask them to leave, Rex, come on, it's not rocket surgery" Roy said, playfully pressing his knuckles on his brother's side. Rex blinked for a moment, then gave a grin of acknowledgement. Yeah, he was big for a Rookie level. Yeah, he had trouble hurting a fly (whatever that was), but that wasn't something that had to be known to every guest. And a big Guilmon asking a rapscallion to leave would probably be more effective than a Chuumon asking the same. So Rex would probably do well as a gentle reminder that this inn wasn't open to trouble.
Then, the inn would open for the night and the employees would take their place. To the tune of Leith and Shoutmon's music, Rex would greet customers and indicate them to their tables while Roy and the other waiters would take their orders to the kitchen.

Once during Leith's and Shoutmon's set, they switched things up by switching instruments, having the Tamer sit closer to the mic after handing the acoustic guitar to the red digimon. Though his size made playing the instrument look a little harder, but in terms of sound it seemed there was no handicap at all. It was at this point, though, that Leith noted, It'd stretch the budget, but maybe we'd have to invest in a smaller instrument for him. Nonetheless, like professionals, they continued on.
"Whoa, we're halfway there, Whoa, livin' on a prayer, Take my hand, and we'll make it, I swear, Whoa, livin' on a prayer,"
It quickly became apparent that without hard music programming (or vocal lessons) that Leith was not as good a singer as Shoutmon. He was, however, passable and even somewhat above average. Even more noteworthy, at least to those who knew Leith well, was that he was actually having a really good time. He'd laugh into the mic between lyircs, grin wide at the crowd, and overall was a very theatrical sort of performer with his gestures and movement. He even used the barstool he sat on as drums, slapping it with his hands. "Rosewood Inn, I freakin' love this place. This village is gonna thrive for a long time if the sort of life I see in you tonight is means anything. We've only got one song left, but like true professionals, the best has been saved for last. This is... 'The Bleeding.'"
"I remember when, All these games began, Remember every little lie, And every last goodbye,
Promises you broke, Words you choked on,
And I never walked away, It's still a mystery to me..."
Shoutmon even joined in with a harmony to make the chorus a duet.
"The lying, the bleeding, the screaming, Was tearing me apart, The hatred, deceiving, disaster, It's over now..."
For most of the set the pair had been fairly considerate and kept it tame, but it seemed they weren't quite capable of going a whole set without getting a little dangerous. Whether the risk paid off, though, the pair of performers took the reaction like true professionals with polite thanks to the venue, the audience, and goodnights before stepping off. Soon as they were clear, Shoutmon and Leith exchanged grins and a fistbump.
Meanwhile, Veemon was surprisingly efficient for it being his first time as a server or, really, any job at all. Actually, he did mix up a couple orders and have a little trouble keeping pace with such a crowd at the beginning, but eventually he seemed to hit a sort of second wind that propelled him and made his shift fly by between the, "What can I get for you?" and, "Order for table six!" and, the most satisfying phrase, "I'm so glad you liked it! Come back soon!" The friendly little imp just seemed to have a knack for socializing and a love of making others smile, even if it was just for a job.

By now it was clear to the dragon twins that Leith and his partners were the real deal. Their music was excellent, and the atmosphere they made through the inn was a positive one, as confirmed by Monodramon. The digimon seemed to appreciate the atmosphere - loud enough to make an impact on things, but not too loud that would be too interrupting for those that wanted to talk.
Indeed the first song kinda made Roy feel uplifted as he wandered about, taking orders and serving meals. The quality of the food seemed to be on board too, there hadn't been any complaints yet as the main course meals began to be sent out.
Indeed, all of these ingredients put together. The positive atmosphere, the good music, the great food, it attracted many to the establishment as the sun set and the evening rounds began in full.
But of course, the bad arrived with the good. About an hour after the sun set, two more digimon approached the entrance, a Kokatrimon and a Digmon. They sneered down at Rex, who nervously fumbled at the reservations.
"H-hello, can I help you?" he asked, trying to be professional. Although the Guilmon's outfit of a shirt and dinner jacket didn't really impose much authority here. Maybe the human practice of wearing pants would have been something he could have learned?
"Yeah, you can help us by putting those stupid papers away and just let us in already, BA-HA-HA-HAA!!" the Kokatrimon cheered.
"Ah, sorry, if you don't have a reservation, we can't let you in" Rex said, shaking his head.
"Oh that's fine, if there's no room we can just get rid of one of the walls and sit down there" the Digmon said, casually. It was at this point that Rex really didn't know what to do here. He was clearly unhappy at being threatened. He hoped help would come from somewhere.

"Excuse me! My rice!"
"Huh?" Veemon had a real egg on his face when he realized he'd been holding a Gazimon's order for a while but had completely spaced out before putting it down. "S-sorry!" he hastily apologized as he set the bowl of rice down and made a hasty exit. His reason for momentarily ignoring his customer was that he could overhear just what poor Rex was going through over by the door, so as soon as his hands were empty he wandered toward the door, hoping the other Veemon serving food could handle it while Leith's attempted to lend a hand. Poor guy. I guess he's got a softer heart than it looks like.
As for Leith and Shoutmon, they had front row seats to the encounter, seeing as they were hanging outside and patting themselves on the back (maybe a little too much) over how great their set was, noting particular audience reactions, and bemoaning a few errors, hoping the patrons didn't notice them or didn't mind if they did. It seemed the arrogant pair of digimon weren't interested in Leith and Shoutmon, at least yet, but they noticed Digmon and Kokatorimon and weren't thrilled by what they saw. "Shoutmon?"
"Yeah?"
"I don't think I can just watch this happen."
"Took you long enough!" Veemon had just arrived by Rex's side to come to the rescue when Shoutmon stepped behind the pair. Veemon was about to ask the disruptive digimon to leave as diplomatically as he could, but before he could utter his first syllable, Shoutmon piped up, "Yo! Assholes!"
Real subtle, Leith remarked to himself.
"We got a policy around here: you break it, you buy it." Shoutmon then cracked his fists before adding, "So fuck off before I have to 'buy' you."
Veemon sighed, seeing as his diplomatic efforts had been quashed before they could even begin, but now that the hands were dealt he had to play what he had. So he stepped forward in front of Rex and resolutely declared, "If you want a reservation, ask nicely. This pub is run by hardworking digimon who try their best to accommodate everybody, and they deserve the same respect as everyone else! Please step away so we can all, including you, go back to having a good time."
As for Leith, he continued leaning against a wall and watched from a small distance. He didn't want to get personally involved if the matter was already being solved - or, if the matter was not about to be solved, he wanted the element of surprise on his side when the fire and lightning started flying. If the expressions of Veemon and Shoutmon were anything to go by, they seemed fully prepared for that possibility.

As the altercation at the front of the inn played out, much of the regulars sighed and shook their heads. Even though Rosewood had been built with noble ideals and good intentions, there were still those within the Timberlands that hated its existence and just seemed to want to cause trouble wherever possible. And it seemed at this moment, the fact that some Champion level digimon decided that bullying the rookie level doormon just made them exasperated at the state of things.
Rex meanwhile tried to keep things peaceful for as long as he could, but as he caught on to the fact that these digimon did in fact want a fight, he didn't know what to do. But thankfully he was quickly backed up by Shoutmon from the inn band.
At first the Guilmon just stared with his mouth open, he hadn't yet heard of trash talk that potent. For a moment he glanced at Roy to silently ask if he should say anything against the statement of the f-word, but, given that Shoutmon's fearsome language against these unwelcome intruders made them pause was a tick in the right side of the ledger for Rex, that tough talk could prevent bad things.
Then Veemon stepped forward and spoke a more erudite and polite sentence, and to Rex's surprise, made the two rude digimon seem to rethink their methods.
"So, uh, we're sorry about all that" the Digmon said, his stomach growling to show his motives here. "Could we please make a reservation?"
With that said, Rex glanced at Veemon and Shoutmon with awe. Their tough talk had stood down a duo of Champions. Maybe he and his brother could learn from this kind of assertiveness?

"That actually worked?" Leith was stunned enough to mumble that out loud but at least subtle enough to keep those around him from hearing him.
"That actually worked?" Shoutmon was not so tactful. "I mean, yeah, you're damn right! 'Cause if you try and start-" Suddenly, Shoutmon found his muzzle getting clamped shut by his Tamer, who had come from behind to keep his partner from becoming the instigator.
"Ignore him, guys. He doesn't seem to get you shouldn't start a fight with someone bigger than you." Leith's other hand took Shoutmon by the shoulder and tried to physically pull him back to where they had been chilling out against the wall, something that fortunately succeeded despite the rookie's quite admirable squirming and resistance.
Veemon sighed, showing visible relief from the fact that tension was defused. But then he flashed a friendly smile and suggested, "I'll tell you what: I'll try to bring you something small while you wait. I really have to get back to work, though!" He then lay a hand on Rex's upper arm (since he was too short to comfortably reach the shoulder) and encouraged him, "I'm sure you can handle it from here," then disappeared back inside and resumed his regular duties.

It seemed that this would be how it was with these digimon. Used to getting their own way through threats and bluster, coming up with so much resistance kinda shook them into realization that they couldn't get their own way so easily here.
This left the dragon twins with a valuable lesson. While yes, they should always try to be nice, sometimes, the situation warranted threatening not to be so nice. And maybe that way they could be more effective in their jobs? Rex certainly thought this much. Of course he still would avoid attacking another digimon if he could help it, well, maybe pretending to be threatening could be as effective as Shoutmon had demonstrated just now?
Other than that event, the rest of the night seemed to go along a lot more peacefully. Rex politely kept those digimon without reservations waiting until a new seat could be found for them, Roy continued to serve meals from the kitchen, and the music seemed to play on. Yes, it was a long night, but, as the minutes ticked past, Roy and Rex felt a little more in touch with this village - what it was built for, what it was going to be. It was fulfilling in some kind of way.
Before long, the time approached closing time for the inn. After then, the bar would be closed, the meals would cease being served, and the patrons encouraged to either go to bed or keep quiet in the common room. And following that would be the end of their shift. Roy and Rex wondered how they'd fared tonight.

Veemon was a digimon of his word; he struggled to find spare time given the crowd, but he did successfully manage to slip Digmon and Kokatrimon a couple of rolls. "Don't tell anyone, though. K?" Veemon punctuated that little request with a cheeky smile and a little wink, one in the direction of the rowdy digimon and then a second to Rex. Then he supposed he had better return to work promptly to avoid overburdening Roy.
The poor blue digimon was pretty tuckered out by the end of the shift, at which point he plopped himself down on a barstool just beside Leith and Shoutmon. "Whoa, man," Leith remarked with a raised eyebrow as he observed Veemon's condition, "You look like you just ran a marathon."
"I feel like that, too." Despite Veemon's tired state, though, had a big old grin on his face as he spun around, leaned back against the bar, and relaxed. "It was kinda fun, though."
"Hm. Don't think I've ever met someone who found menial labor fun, but more power to ya." Leith then scanned the area around himself and wondered aloud, "Where's the boss man, then? Or, 'boss 'mon,' I guess. Still gotta settle up."
