Getting Away (Leith Hunt)
|
Post by Colin, Luke & Bellamy on Aug 30, 2018 12:06:27 GMT
Colin realized from Leith's reaction that his launch into a monologue was probably not the right thing to do in this situation. At the very least, he would try not to do that again. So, he said little else as Leith reacted. While he was hoping to conjure inspiration here, well, it was also his means of learning how his own experiences could help others. After Leith sorted things out with his own partners he seemed to counter Colin by saying that he knew what friendship was, just the thing was that he didn't feel he had earned it. Colin was about to say something generic and overtly friendly, but, somehow he knew that Leith spoke the truth. The reality was that Colin was using the shroud of friendship as an excuse to help out new tamers. Yet... how was that significant? Colin decided to help those that needed help, and it seemed Leith and his partners were open to receiving it. So, who cares that this didn't follow some stupid manual of how to make friends? Colin just wanted to get along with others in the end. As the discussion came to a close, Colin chose to say nothing more and would instead lead Leith, Veemon and Shoutmon back to the Whitewater transport hub, where Daedalus was still waiting. There in front of them was the grand mechanical dragon digimon, 90ft long and 40ft high, his armored hull painted a resplendent red with white underneath. His blue eyes watched them as they neared. "Ah, are we expecting guests, Colin?" he asked in a curt yet gentle voice. "Yeah, we are, Daedalus" Colin answered. Daedalus nodded his head in response. "Very well. I shall prepare a spare bedroom for him and his partners. Since your cabin is set, only a second cabin should be necessary". Daedalus's living quarters had six cabins in total, which could suit either two humans, or one human and two partners, assuming they were at the rookie level. "Well, welcome aboard" Colin said to Leith as they entered, first of all beholding the luxurious modern setting of Daedalus's main cabin, a highly modern living space with amenities of both functionality and comfort as well made as any modern luxury yacht, only with the distinct difference that it was for flight over floating. "Welcome" Daedalus spoke to the trio through his internal intercom. "If you have any questions about your accommodation please feel free to ask".

"Ho-ly..." was Leith's understated reaction to meeting Daedalus. "That's a digimon?"
"Leith, be nice!" Veemon gently whispered to Leith. "Thank you, Daedalus," he then added for the airship digimon.
With Veemon's comment, an embarrassed look took the young man's face, but by the time he thought he should probably apologize he was already being led onboard, at which point he supposed the moment had effectively passed. When he found the main cabin, though, Leith suddenly seemed a lot less ashamed of what he'd just said. "OK, again, this is a digimon?" This time Veemon didn't even seem to mind; he himself was floored by the level of luxury presented before him as he silently explored with his eyes, mouth slightly agape. "Merc work pays better than I thought..."
"Hey, I got a question! Where's the bathroom?" Shoutmon demanded that fairly rudely, but maybe he had a good reason for once: one hand was on his stomach, and his lips were tightly pursed like he was trying to keep something from coming out through there. Could the evening of partying and binge drinking finally be coming back to haunt him?
"My question is whether we all get our own butler or have to share yours that you definitely have in here." Getting a little more relaxed, Leith unslung his guitar case off his back and instead held it just slightly over the ground in one hand to spare his shoulders any further burden. "Colin, if the other cabins are anything like this one, you're dealing with more square footage than my two-story house."

"Yep, Daedalus is a digimon alright" Colin said, proud of his mechanical friend. "He's the Mega level form of Blimpmon, well, if you're familiar with that digimon. But he's helped us out for nearly two years now".
As they stepped on board, Leith seemed totally shocked at the sight of the main cabin.
"Heh, yep, it's all real" Colin answered. "Although most of the facilities here are meant to help us out with our jobs as officers of PROFIT. But Daedalus insisted on everyone being comfortable too, so, hence all the additional features".
Leith mentioned that merc work seemed better than he first thought. "Pretty much true" Colin agreed. "But, in my experience, best not to think of them as mercenaries, but a part of your team".
"Col, please, we've had enough friendship speech no jutsu for the time being" Bellamy said, chuckling.
Shoutmon then asked where the bathroom was. Fortunately this was a simple question to answer.
"See those blue doors either side there? Those are the bathrooms" Colin told him. And that was hopefully all that needed to be said of that.
Following this, Leith asked if they had to share the same butler. Colin smiled and shook his head. "As nice as Daedalus sounds, he just controls the systems in the cabin. There isn't any butlers in here, but, since you're our guests, we can help out if you need it".
Leith's next remark confused him a little, but Colin answered with what he could make of it. "Well, the sleeping cabins just have a couple of beds and a closet, so, of course they're not as big as this one..." he said. "But, well, there hasn't been a moment yet where I've been uncomfortable aboard Daedalus, so, hope you guys feel the same way. Ah, by the way, we're taking off soon, so, once Shoutmon's finished, we should sit down in the middle ring of the cabin, that's the best place to be on take-off".

"Did you say mega?" That absolutely stunned Leith; mega was a level of digimon he hadn't even encountered yet, but he did know enough to understand that kind of power was exponentially higher than that of an ultimate digimon... a thought that made Leith shudder internally. He understood a mercenary digimon of such a level would only consent to work for one who could match it... or more. "Jesus..."
Even Veemon seemed to show a little awe for Colin and company's clear superiority over them, but he was better at moving past it than Leith. "A couple of beds and a closet is all we need. Thank y-" The sounds of Shoutmon driving the porcelain bus from a bathroom whose door was cracked open interrupted Veemon, but the blue digimon simple wandered over there and shut it behind Shoutmon so that he could continue, "Thank you again." He then took a seat on the circular couch as directed, Leith sitting beside him but with a healthy distance between them. When Shoutmon returned he seemed to want still more personal space and so sat completely across from them.
"Feeling better, Shoutmon?"
"Yep!" The red lizard affirmed before holding out his hand urgently and grumbling, "Wait!" he then held that pose like a person unsure if they're going to sneeze or not... for a good long minute, too. But eventually he concluded, "Yeah, I'm good."

Colin blinked a little with surprise by how stunned Leith seemed to be about the fact that Daedalus was a mega level. But he held down the urge to explain it further. If Leith was new to all this, it was probably best he wasn't rushed through the full implications of the ultimate powers of the digital world.
As Veemon was about to thank them, the atmosphere was a little interrupted by the sound of Shoutmon's stomach coming back for a second round in one of the bathrooms. While technically this was taking place within Daedalus, fortunately his internal waste plumbing systems quickly transferred the nasty stuff outside in waste bags to be disposed with upon either landing or jettisoning over the sea or equivalent. Indeed, Daedalus was a tolerant host machine digimon, he'd been fine with worse than Shoutmon barf.
As they sat down on the circular couch in the common room, Shoutmon returned after recovering, and little more attention was dealt to that. When all were seated, Colin spoke up.
"Okay, Daedalus, we're all set" he said.
"Very well, commencing take-off" the Heliodramon replied, and promptly rose up from the ground. Fortunately his drive as a Mega level was very smooth and stable, and as long as his passengers were sitting down, they would feel very little discomfort as they commenced their flight sequence.
Once that was out of the way, Colin would turn to Leith. "So, basically our job today is to run a flying scan of the Southern coastline of the mainland" he explained. "In our experience, should be a simple task, but with the digital world as it is these days, we might have to fly in close for a better look if we see anything that's amiss".
Bellamy then grinned and pointed at the TV screen in front of them. "Thankfully Daedalus can run the sensors without us, so, in the meantime we can just kick back and watch some TV if we wanna" he said, although what was currently available for view was essentially the same as human world daytime TV, only with digimon. None of which was very entertaining.
"So, uh, Leith, you been around much in the digital world?" Colin asked, a little hesitantly.

During takeoff, each of the group had different reactions. Veemon was clearly the most relaxed of the bunch, looking around in wonder because of his first time flying when not under his own power. Unsurprisingly, Leith didn't take it perfectly, having to try his best to clench the couch cushion in fists to feel stable. Shoutmon was the one who took it worst, though; he lay down flat, clenched his stomach, and groaned uncomfortably.
When given the details, or what few there were of the task ahead, Leith paused to wait for further specifics only to find there weren't any. "That's it? Sounds like a piece of cake." Then his eyes became glued to the TV, though more out of curiosity than true entertainment. When asked about his previous digital experience, though, he leaned back, released his death grip on the couch, and responded, "Kind of. Not a lot. A couple months ago it was Veemon's idea to pop in occasionally and just hang out, explore, the normal stuff. Gotta admit, it's kinda growing on me." Veemon smirked as he heard this; he knew this was one of his more significant achievements when it came to being a good companion for Leith. "In fact, you probably figured out our little lie when we met by now: we'd seen the digital world a couple times more than we originally said, which is obvious since, you know, Vee had two digimentals."
"Leith thought that not revealing our power would help keep us out of trouble, and I agreed. It made sense at the time: if we weren't worth the trouble, trouble wouldn't come looking for us."
"And as you can see, that worked perfectly," the young man finished sarcastically. "We've seen Elysium - at least, the top part - Terminus, the Plains, those ruins in the desert, and a couple places here in the tropics. I guess that's not bad for a few weeks' work?"

Luke gave a nod then a cautious smile at Leith's words. "A piece of cake if everything is in fact as it should be" he said. "Although these days, more often than not, it isn't. We usually have about one or two anomalies on each patrol that we need to land and investigate".
As Bellamy turned on the TV, he was flicking briefly through the channels. From a Vegiemon on a shopping channel advertising knives to a Strabimon and Gomamon duo running a fishing show to a soccer match where the ball constantly had to be replaced due to the claws on the digimons' feet to a soap opera.
"Ohh Janice..." a Flamedramon said dramatically on the screen. "I don't have the capacity for love... for I was cursed by a tribe of gypsy ninjas when I was an in-training..."
"Oh Lance..." the Lekismon replied. "I know. I was -in- that tribe of gypsy ninjas!"
"Ugh, ya'd think after watchin' the humans' culture we could at least iron out the bumps like crappy daytime TV" Bellamy muttered with disgust.
Still though, the conversation was interesting. And it was good that Leith was being honest with them now. Yes, him not revealing his involvement in the digital world was understandable, not something to hold a grudge about. And so far he seemed to be fairly well travelled.
"Huh, two digimentals, nice" Colin remarked, impressed. "And honestly, that was kinda our strategy in the first place. We kinda grew in the background and only made ourselves known when we had no other choice. Although even then, hopefully we've mostly hidden who we were on that day".
The 'day' he was referring to was the day he biomerged with his partners to form BlackJupitermon over the skies of Whitewater, where he had helped prevent it from destruction from Dynasmon of the Dark Area. He would wait to see if Leith knew about it or not though.
"Yep, that's a pretty good travel log so far" Luke agreed, when next his attention was drawn to the screen that displayed Daedalus's sensor results. A flashing icon took his attention. "Ah, here we go, anomaly number one. Looks like we've gotta land and take a look" he said. As expected, the anomaly was around the Backup Bayou area, which was the source of most unusual things happening in this sector.
"Hopefully it's not a major one" Colin remarked to Leith. But, well, even if it was, it was simply a part of their day jobs to investigate.

"Wait, isn't that line from Rat-"
"Hey, screw you, dude!" Shoutmon interrupted Leith, aiming his jab at Bellamy, "I like this stuff."
Leith shrugged, supposing he neither had to say what was on his mind nor could think of a response to his rather rude new partner. Then again, who am I to judge someone else's manners?
"Shoutmon, you've hardly been alive long enough to see good TV," Veemon then pointed out.
"Well... still."
"Moving on, please?" The subject Leith moved onto turned out not to be the battle of Whitewater but the task at hand, which probably meant the young man knew nothing of this event. "What are we actually supposed to investigate? An 'anomaly?' Does that mean a river flowing wrong way, a giant monster trying to destroy all existence, or just a rock not where you expected it to be?"
"Whatever it is," Veemon figured, "Let's be ready for it!" Shoutmon actually grinned as he said that; seemed the prospect of a little adventure lifted his mood.
The same could not be said for Leith. He remained fairly even as he teased, "That means you, Red. Think you're not-drunk enough?"
Shoutmon groaned, "Shit, give me a little credit! Why's everyone ragging on me so hard tonight?" but then sat up straight and steady. "Fuck, at this rate I hope it's the giant monster. I gotta work out some aggression!"

Bellamy gave a derisive kind of snort in response to Shoutmon. "Heh, well you have my sympathies, pal" he said. But he wasn't going to pass any more judgement than that.
Moving on, Leith then asked what it was they were actually meant to be doing. Colin gently patted Luke's back as a prompt to get the Elecmon to explain things, as Colin couldn't really do that himself.
"Alright. So, from the beginning, you've probably figured this out by now, but, the digital world seems to operate with different laws of physics to the ones on Earth" he began. "The basic ones work similarly - gravity, energy cannot be created or destroyed, Newton's laws of motions, stuff like that. But there's a key difference between the digital world and Earth. There, everything can be categorized as 'matter', here, 'matter' is replaced by 'data'"
With his brother going into teacher mode, Bellamy suddenly found the dramatic lives of Lance and Janice much more interesting. Colin meanwhile cleared his throat to try and get Luke to the point. The Elecmon understood this though.
"Ah, right. So, basically, the digital world is constantly expanding. It's reacting to the increasing amount of data on Earth that runs parallel to it. And so from this data, sometimes it simply comes in too fast to properly assimilate itself with its surroundings, and then it becomes an anomaly. It's basically areas with too much data. So, our job is to patrol the region and find these anomalies before they grow too much out of control. If an anomaly is left alone for too long, it can cause localized disasters, so, the earlier they're dealt with, the better. And since we have Daedalus here, we're pretty well equipped to deal with these sort of things".
Colin thought that was pretty much what was going on here. So it seemed they were going to prepare to intervene with an anomaly, whatever it was. However, it seemed the early sensors had overestimated the strength of this one. As they neared, the anomaly was visible as a strange bubble on the surface of the bayou, its existence somewhat eerie, but, most importantly, it didn't seem to have any corporeal form yet. A most accurate way of describing it was an incomplete 3D model in a graphics program, and it was only about the size of a small house at this stage.
"Colin, I believe there won't be a need for us to land" Daedalus spoke through the internal PA system that he used to communicate with guests in the cabin. "I should be able to eliminate the anomaly myself".
"Alright, if you're sure, Daedalus" Colin answered. "We should probably all sit down for this, his gun has a bit of recoil" he advised those in attendance. Daedalus aimed his main gun directly at the anomaly, charged energy, then with a cry of "Ion Beam!" shot a pillar of light straight downward. The excess data anomaly instantly exploded as it hit, instantly dissipating the amorphous bubble. It seemed the attack had done its work.
"Alright! That's done it!" Luke cheered. "So with that done, the excess data's spread thin enough so that it can now be properly assimilated into its surroundings. And that's all there is to it, although any anomalies bigger than that may need more careful treatment. And they're kinda rare, it's just we haven't been on patrol for a while".

The whole group was very grateful for the comprehensive briefing from Luke, but Leith was especially impressed by the use of real world physics analogies to tell it. Then again, he did say he's an engineer, Leith reasoned as he glanced at his own two partners. Yeah, no, that's cool. We don't need any impressive skills or useful knowledge. We're good flailing our arms and hoping everything works out. The sarcasm in Leith's mental voice was almost bitter.
"Why are you looking at me?"
"Huh? Nothing! Just spaced out," the young man slickly covered. Veemon seemed to buy it.
When warned about the recoil of the cannon, Leith, Veemon, and even Shoutmon wisely kept in their seats. "Leith, it's probably gonna be pretty loud!" Veemon warned his Tamer. As intuitive as that might have sounded to most, this was indeed a prudent warning: the young man with autism had more to worry about from such a sudden cacophony than just hearing damage, so he covered his ears, shut his eyes and waited until either he could feel the gun fire or he'd be told it already did. It turned out to be the former; he felt the rumbling and still heard it through his ears, though his efforts made it less likely to be a trigger. Unfortunately, there was a second loud noise when he uncovered his ears.
"Oho, shit! That's nice! Do it again!" Shoutmon cheered like a child who'd just watched a tiger jump through a hoop.
"I guess that's one down. Thanks yet again, Veemon." Veemon nodded and smiled modestly. "I can't imagine what kind of 'anomaly' couldn't be solved with a aerial bombardment from a mega... I don't know any problem that couldn't solve, come to think of it."

It seemed that after their first encounter with an anomaly, they did not encounter much afterward. As exciting as the mission sounded, well, there was rarely more than one or two unreported anomalies, even if it had been a few months since they had been on their last patrol.
Essentially, this meant that following that rather exciting moment over the Bayou, virtually most of the Southern coast was reporting back the standard readings. And even though they were doing good for the digital world by confirming it, well, they weren't really achieving much through effort. After all, Daedalus's sensors were doing most of the work, and Colin thought those were all they needed. Yes they would be backed up by groundwork in due time, but, other than that swell earlier, it seemed there was little further for the time being.
Leith stated that he couldn't think of many problems that couldn't be solved with a good blast. And Colin would have agreed, but with a key difference. "Of course we wouldn't dream of doing that within range of a civilian village" he said.
But, well, he remembered the reason why he had invited Leith and his partners aboard - to both give them a place to stay and a means of keeping his and his partners' minds from their current problems, which currently seemed kinda terrible. Yet... Colin was only 15 and had grown up in a family with little problems, what possible help could he be?
In the end, it seemed Bellamy seemed to home in on his thoughts, if ever that was possible. Because the Impmon turned to Colin and spoke in a cheery matter-of-fact tone.
"Hey, Colin, doesn't seem like we're gonna get much more action than that today, how 'bout we just hold a patrol pattern and relax for the night?"
From saying that it was clear that Bellamy thought that it'd be neat for their guests to simply get a bit of relaxation for the rest of the day. Of course, in an emergency, that would change, but, there was currently no emergency. And also, he hoped that removing excessive stress from their guests would allow them some semblance of positivity.

"I like the sound of that myself," Leith agreed with Bellamy's suggestion as he watched Shoutmon kick up his feet and lay his heels on the central table. "That was quick and easy."
"I guess that means I don't get to hit anything," Shoutmon grumbled with crossed arms and a sour look.
"Well you don't have to look so down about it. I don't think I wanna fight something that Daedalus can't handle himself." Despite that thought, even the young Tamer was taking a more relaxed position, even standing up and leaning back against a counter. "Hey, Vee, don't you like a good fight, too? You know, when it's not some trap."
Veemon scoffed. "I'm adventerous; he's reckless."
"You wanna see reckless, cupcake?"
"Is that a challenge?"
"Both of you, shut the fuck up!"
"Make me, princess!"
Leith did. With the push of a button, each digimon was sucked inside of the digivice Leith ordinarily wore on his wrist, and once they were gone from plain view he scolded the machine, "You can come outta there when you quit being insufferable." With that he detached the digivice and shut it away in a cabinet he hoped was too small for them to emerge into. "Yeah... that's the other thing, guys. Those two don't really get along, and, frankly, I don't get it. Veemon's, like, the nicest guy I know of either kind, but he can't stop antagonizing Shoutmon. Shoutmon never backs down, though, so it feels like a balloon constantly filling with air and almost ready to pop." Leith sat back down in the center then. "So the past few days I've been fighting both with my family and my partners. Then there you guys are, like you know exactly your place in both worlds and get along perfectly. Gotta admit I'm a little jealous and more than a little lost on just how you actually do it."

It seemed like there was something of a disagreement in the aftermath of the dealing with the anomaly. Namely that Veemon and Shoutmon seemed somewhat antagonistic toward each other, so much so that Leith withdrew the both of them into his digivice.
"...yeesh, Colin, did I ever tell you thanks for not picking up that program?" Bellamy asked his partner. He was much relieved at the fact that Colin chose to keep them close by through the means of holosuits. The Impmon didn't think he could stand it if Colin had instead chose to store him in his digivice like a pokemon.
"I got the feeling you'd like it better this way" Colin answered with a small smile. He, Bellamy and Luke then paid attention to Leith as he explained the situation. It was truly something they hadn't encountered before, two digimon partnered to the same human, yet were not brothers. And they seemed to not get along either. Just what was up with that? Neither of them knew. Even if they disagreed sometimes, Luke and Bellamy still loved each other at a family level and would never go beyond the boundary of trying to hurt the other. Yet there seemed to be no such bond between Veemon and Shoutmon.
Still though, there was Leith's question to answer first. "Well, we do it by thinking of ourselves as family" Luke began. "You can choose your friends, but you can't choose who you're related to, et cetera. Yeah there's things about Bellamy that bothers me and things about me that bothers him, but, since we're brothers, we do our best to get past that. Same with our differences with Colin, we want our lives to work with him, so we do our best to get that".
Bellamy and Colin didn't have much to add to that, so they simply remained silent while it all sunk in and calmed down. Bellamy then raised the TV remote and changed the channel to see what else was on. It seemed daytime TV had changed to evening, and there changed to yet another show where the digimon were re-enacting a show from the human world, only this time it seemed to be a bunch of them on a cooking show, to be abused by an angry Matadormon with a british accent.
"So, feel like watchin' this? Or should we flip on Fletnix?" Bellamy asked out of curiosity.

The young man had to scoff as he watched the events unfold on TV, especially when Matadormon scolded a cook for having turnips so undercooked that they looked ready to digivolve into Palmon. "Somehow, I feel like I've seen this show before," he chuckled, grateful for the small distraction, "Food shows don't really do it for me. I kinda have, uh, personal food issues. Let's see what's on Netfl- Fletflix? What did you say?" But Leith waved a hand then, gesturing that he didn't care enough about the pronunciation to continue the pursuit. It seemed he had switched back to the argument earlier and looked at Bellamy while explaining, "Believe me, I don't wanna do that to them, at least in this world. Hell, I've almost gotten used to having no more privacy, and I know I'm gonna get an earful when I let them out. But I'm just completely at my wit's end!" More specifically to Luke, he continued, "As you can see, the whole 'family' thing isn't going so well for me right now, but, goddamn..." Then to the whole trio he spoke, "I want to make it work, too. For real. And I wanna believe they do, too, but the evidence does not support that."
Leith recognized he was getting himself riled up, so almost instinctively he took a long, deep breath and let it out before speaking again. The breath was loud enough that it was audibly a little shaky. Still, at least on the outside, he seemed to regain composure after. "Alright. I'm being a downer, and I know it, and I'm sorry for it. Let's talk about something else. Like, uh..." Come to think of it, Leith realized he didn't really know a whole lot about these guys as people. "Hmm. Here's something that's kinda funny, I guess: people see my hair and dark clothes and guitar and think I'm some drinking, moshing animal, but actually I've never had a sip of alcohol in my life, never tried weed, never tried cigarettes, and frankly I don't like places that are packed with a lot of people making a lot of noise."

This was indeed something that seemed like a problem. Colin was really at a loggerheads as to what he could do to help these guys out. Yeah, the fact that they weren't related was probably an issue, this could be a rivalry thing. Bellamy and Luke were a little like that in the beginning, Bellamy jealous of Luke's quickness to learn and gain wisdom while Luke was envious of Bellamy's ability to talk to anyone without being shy. Yet the brothers had calmed down a lot since those days and pretty much just tried to bring out the best in each other, most of the time. Bellamy meanwhile switched on the Bletchlix or whatever it was and flipped through the available channels. "Hmm. Somethin' light hearted and entertaining maybe?" he suggested. "Digitopia's pretty good, it's kinda like your Zootopia, only more realistic since it's got digimon, hehe".Luke meanwhile had something of an idea. He first walked over to Bellamy and sat down next to him on the sofa. "Hey, Bells... why don't we talk to Shoutmon and Veemon separately? Like... gently talk to them and find out what the matter is, then, maybe encourage them to settle their differences?""Hmm... seems like it could work" Bellamy replied, rubbing his chin. "If the others agree, I'll talk to Shoutmon, you talk to Veemon, sound good?""Okay" the Elecmon nodded with a grin, then turned to Leith. "Hey, I've got an idea. Why don't Veemon and Shoutmon spend some time with us? We can have mon-to-mon talks if you think that could work"."At other sides of Daedalus of course" Bellamy added with a sweatdrop.
Colin meanwhile chuckled a bit at Leith's comment about his clothing. "You know I kinda had that impression when I first saw you in the park" he said. That kinda dissipated soon after though. "Good thing we didn't head into that nightclub then".
