Getting Away (Leith Hunt)

By the time Leith had finished making his Tamernet post, he had looked up to find he'd already had two bags packed. One of these was one he had made himself, a go-bag in the form of a school packpack he had begun to keep in the few days since one Niko Sasanishi had instilled the paranoia that at any time he could be tracked, found, and ambushed. The other one, however, was his old suitcase he hadn't even taken out of the closet since moving. "Hmm? What's this?" While Leith sat on his bed with residual tear trails still on his face, he glanced at Veemon who was still managing to smile despite the ultimatum he had just been issued: they leave, or he does.
Veemon confidently explained, "I know you, Leith. You run away from your problems. Normally I'd say you shouldn't, but... they looked pretty mad."
The fact that Veemon wasn't wrong just made Leith frown more. "Am I that predictable?"
That was what happened just before Leith found himself in the Sandy Pineapple. Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea to go to a hotel when in fact he never even left his room since arriving. It seemed he couldn't muster the energy or the desire to do much of anything but lay in bed and maybe play his acoustic for fifteen minutes at a time. Veemon had attempted to keep Leith company for as long as he could, but on one particular night Shoutmon - the digimon that had started the whole mess Leith was now in - ended up physically pulling out Veemon from the room with the claim that Veemon might as well have some fun, even if 'the sourpuss' wasn't. So, while Shoutmon was partying it up and the local clubs and trying to get Veemon to loosen up a little, Leith went back to laying around in the room alone.
OOC: Colin, Luke & Bellamy , Take your pick whether Colin would spontaneously show up or contact Leith on Tamernet first. You know what he'd do.

Since seeing the message on the Tamernet, Colin and his partners felt enough sympathy for Leith to see if there was anything they could do for the new tamer and his partners. While Leith wasn't the easiest person to get along with, the three of them thought his partner Veemon was a nice digimon and wouldn't want him to be in a bad situation. That plus Leith had recently received a digiegg, which Luke in particular was concerned about.
And so from their home on Kongou Island off the coast of Whitewater, the three of them rode their Heliodramon partner Daedalus across the sea to the mainland.
"Man I love Whitewater" Bellamy said, the furred Impmon grinning as they came in for a landing in the city's transport hub. There was an area of open concrete where large flying digimon could land and pick up or drop off cargo and passengers. Bellamy was certainly dressed for the occasion, donning a red tropical shirt. He had even managed to get his twin brother Luke to wear something similar, only his was blue. Colin meanwhile was dressed in his usual clothes of a navy blue t-shirt and brown cargo pants, a garment eschewed by his twin partners as usual.
They disembarked from Daedalus's cabin and thanked the big mechanical dragon. Daedalus gave them a warm acknowledgement and remained in a resting state. Soon after, Colin and his partners left the hub and made their way onto the streets of Whitewater.
"So, what's this pineapple place, eh?" Bellamy asked. "Heh, I wonder if it's run by a Guilmon?" he mused to himself for some reason.
"The Sandy Pineapple" Luke clarified. "It's in the hotel district, so, guess we'll be heading in that direction".
Not long after they started walking, it wasn't long before they saw someone familiar. "Oh hey is that Veemon?" Colin asked his partners, noting a blue and white dragon. They made their way in his direction to see if he was the one they knew.
"Hey there" Bellamy said as they neared, hoping they weren't mistaking him for someone else. "You're Leith's partner, right?" he wanted to clarify.

It made sense that Veemon wasn't instantly, decisively recognizable. For one, the fact that he wasn't wearing any kind of garment or identifying mark made him look like pretty much any other Veemon, at least to the untrained eye. What made him even harder to identify was the fact that his company wasn't a 19-year-old Tamer but a Shoutmon who was trying to get him inside a club that blasted music so loud that those speaking even just outside had to raise their voices a little to be heard.
Veemon breathed a sigh of relief upon sight of Colin and company, and not just because he'd had about enough of the night life right then. "Bellamy! Guys! Hi. I'm really glad you came."
Only at this point did Shoutmon stop pulling and look the trio before them up and down. "Eh? You know these guys?" Shoutmon seemed somewhat detached from the trio, not seeming to care much about their presence beyond his own curiosity, at least judging by how he had asked that of Veemon instead of Bellamy. But then the lightbulb went off in his head, and he actually addressed the Impmon. "Wait, did he say 'Bellamy?'" Of course Shoutmon had heard the story of his own introduction to Leith; he was filled in after the fact.

So, this was the Veemon in question. That sure was a relief, to all of them it seemed. The noise coming from the building they were about to enter made Colin's eardrums throb. Luke and Bellamy, who had bigger ears, were equally hesitant to enter.
"Hey, Veemon, nice to see you" Luke said, glad they had found him so quickly. He had been rather worried about what might be the issue mentioned on the Tamernet.
Their attention then turned to the Shoutmon that seemed to be nearby. He looked somehow different to Adrian's Shoutmon so they guessed it wasn't him.
"Yep, Bellamy's the name, ya can call me the Impster though if you like" the Impmon winked back. "So, seems you know Veemon, eh? You a friend of his?".
Colin was meanwhile glancing around the street for any signs of Leith. So far there wasn't, he could only see other digimon. "Also, how's Leith going? Is he with you, Veemon?" the boy asked with concern. "Actually... can we go somewhere a bit more quiet? I can't really hear all that well".
"I know a place if ya wanna head that way" Bellamy offered. Nothing beat a nice beachside cafe that he was familiar with.

"But it sounds epic in there!" Shoutmon initially whined. Still, with an annoyed huff, Veemon ended up overpowering his counterpart and pulling him into the cafe along with Colin, Luke, and Bellamy. Only once everyone was seated did Veemon start to explain, "Leith had a fight with his parents his last night in the humanl world.""'Ey, it wasn't just Leith!" Shoutmon instantly interjected. "Yeah, um, we had a fight with Leith's parents, too." Veemon looked a little guilty as that was explained, but Shoutmon just huffed arrogantly and crossed his arms. "Shoutmon is the digimon that hatched from that red digiegg. He's Leith's other partner." Veemon's next look to Shoutmon made it clear the blue digimon wasn't too happy with his counterpart right about then. "Shoutmon hatched and digivolved when me and Leith were sleeping. Then instead of waking one of us up he went to get a snack - loudly. He woke Skye, she screamed, and the scream woke up his parents."
"Hey, I didn't get the memo!" was Shoutmon's defense. "Besides, they weren't fighting 'bout just us. There was school and his room and stuff that's been going on way longer than we've known him."
Veemon shook his head glumly. "That's true, but we were the ones who set off the chain reaction." Veemon buried his face in his hands for a moment before adding, "Now his dad wants to kick him out, his Mom wants to call the police, and his sister just ran to her room crying halfway through. I've seen Leith argue with his parents, but this was, like..." Veemon's voice shook as he decided to spit out, "It felt like they were angrier at each other than Niko was."
"So now the buzzkill is moping around in his room and doesn't even wanna have any fun when he's on vacation. I mean, yeah, he's my partner and I want him to be happy, but come on! I ain't got effort to waste on cheerin' someone up who doesn't wanna be happy."

The cafe was one of Bellamy's favorites. Not too close to the sea so it would trigger his hydrophobia, but not too far so that a fresh, cool scent of salt wouldn't blow in through the moderately lit building. He'd often dine here with Coronamon when they were both in Whitewater and his fiance had a night off cooking. And the food and atmosphere here was great. It was a little pricier than other establishments in the city, but with them being senior officers of PROFIT, price wasn't really a problem now.
Once they were seated, Bellamy ordered a jug of tropical juice to start with, since alcohol probably wouldn't be a very tactful thing to mix in with the problems that may be going on lately. And his instincts were right, because when Veemon revealed what Leith's problems were, the three of them stared with astonishment.
"Oh... no" was all Colin could say at the start. Family problems. He knew this wouldn't be an easy thing to solve.
Then Veemon revealed that Shoutmon was in fact Leith's other partner. This diverted their attention once more. "Huh, that's unusual" Luke remarked, glancing at Shoutmon, then back at Veemon. "And you're not... brothers?" he just wanted to clarify.
But this was secondary in interest to what the main problem was. Colin's red eyes widened as Veemon told the substance of the matter. Leith getting rejected by his own parents, police being threatened to be called, and apparently his sister Skye not assisting matters either. "Oh... damn, I'm really sorry to hear that" Colin said, sighing, wishing he could be more help.
Bellamy meanwhile had an expression of disgust on his face. "The fuck kinda parents are they?" he spat. "I don't care if they're humans. I'd never treat my kids like that, and anyone that does is a piece of shit in my view".
"Bells, calm down, please" Luke begged his twin, grasping his shoulder. Bellamy took deep breaths, then tried to remain calm, but still scowled as he sipped his juice angrily. Luke then tried to salvage this. "What my brother was meaning to say was... that seems like kind of an extreme reaction to just having digimon partners" the Elecmon stated. "So... I take it there was other factors too, right?" he then hesitated then added "N-not that it's our business if you don't want to tell us that".
Colin remained mostly silent about this. After all, what input could he make when his partners seemed more confident about discussing this?

Shoutmon was not so conservative as Bellamy. He'd ordered himself a beer soon as the table had gotten a server's attention, and he finished it almost before the server who gave it to him had walked away. Meanwhile Veemon, who didn't order a thing, replied to Luke, "They... Leith and his family have never gotten along. And I hate to say it, but it's not all their fault. They've actually been really good to him in a lot of ways, and he knows it. Lots of humans would have had to move out at his age just because they're his age. They-" Veemon stopped himself before he could say what he had just thought. "-No, I can't tell you secrets that aren't mine. You'd have to ask him."
"Nah, I'm with Bokkun here!" Veemon cringed as soon as he heard Shoutmon say that; he remembered Bellamy didn't appreciate it, and the imp digimon already seemed riled up. "Leith's got the whole digital world! It ain't like he's got nowhere to go. He needs people who can handle him being a Tamer - not that anyone can 'tame' me!"
"But they were just surprised!" Veemon defended, "Like all humans would be!" To calm himself, Veemon took a breath. "Can we please not talk about whose fault it is right now? I brought him here because I wanted him to have a good time and cool down before we try talking to them again. I... don't want Leith to destroy his relationship with his family over us. Right now, though, I just wanted to show him a good time. Now I don't know what to do."
"Also, no. We're not brothers." The sudden disregard for the subject made Veemon sigh again, but he didn't seem to have the energy to tell off his counterpart while other things were on his mind. Shoutmon caught it nonetheless. "What? He asked! Seems like that guy's parents aren't the only ones who can't handle me." Shoutmon leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms after that retort.

Colin and Luke listened with sympathy as Veemon explained the situation. Deciding that he needed something a little heavier, Bellamy ordered a small glass of Crème de menthe. Perhaps it was for the best that the server pouring the drink made him partially miss the first part of what Shoutmon said. At least it was apparent, either that or he didn't care for the moment. "Hmm, that's true, although I hope he doesn't get the idea to go somewhere dangerous" Colin remarked as Bellamy emptied half the glass in a long sip. "Well, I'd say everyone getting the chance to calm down about it first would be a good thing. I mean, from what I hear, it was just panic, shock, all that stuff, and you probably wouldn't get that reaction again, at least I hope".The now slightly tipsy Bellamy felt the need to add to the conversation. "Yeah, I mean, Colin's parents didn't freak out over us, well, it kinda helped that they already knew us because we first met in holosuits" he said. "They were a bit shocked at first, but, once they realized we could talk and understand and were actually Colin's best friends and knew how to use the bathroom, they eventually accepted us as part of the family" he pointed at Veemon and Shoutmon. "Kinda strange the humans would be scared of a couple of cute guys like you"."I always forget how quickly you get smashed, Bells" Luke gave a sidelong glance of disapproval at his brother, but looked back at the others, who were apparently not brothers. As curious as that was, he'd put that to one side for now. "Hmm. Well, if Leith needs something to get his mind off things, maybe he could come with us on Daedalus while we do some work maybe?" he looked at Colin with a hopeful glance. "Oh yeah, that's right. We're meant to be doing some transport work tomorrow" Colin said, thinking the idea wasn't too bad actually. There was enough room on Daedalus for 12 humans and digimon easily, so it wouldn't be a problem. "Daedalus is our mercenary, a Heliodramon. He's basically a big mecha dragon that has a cabin to transport people and things inside via air".Bellamy meanwhile finished the rest of his glass of drink, put it down, then shifted his green eyes to Shoutmon. "Did... did you just call me Bokkun?" he asked.
Colin grimaced, well, now that that was out of the bag he supposed he'd best run a distraction. Bellamy being angry at him would probably be less of a pain than him being mad at Shoutmon. "Nope, he didn't, calm down there, shorty" he said with a grin.
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU CALLIN' SOMETHIN' THE SIZE OF A PARAMECIUM THAT CAN ONLY BE SEEN THROUGH A MICROSCOPE?!" Bellamy yelled, standing up on his chair so he was temporarily taller than Colin, until he fell off.
"So, anyway, should we make arrangements now or wait until Leith might be in a better condition?" Luke asked, ignoring his brother.

Shoutmon just couldn't hold in his laughter anymore. Leith doing something dangerous? Bellamy getting wasted after one drink? Leith on a flying vehicle? But Bellamy's outburst about his size was what really broke Shoutmon. At that he pounded the table with his fist and began to laugh like he'd just seen the funniest joke in the world. In fact, he forgot he'd been leaning his chair back and rather humiliatingly fell backwards to the ground. The chair ended up being fine, as was Shoutmon's body, though his pride wasn't so intact. He was no longer laughing by the time he was back seated upright, though he did have to clear his throat before he spoke again. "Ha... something tells me Leith won't do so good flying."
"Actually, he's been on airplanes a lot of times. He's used to them, and Daedalus sounds much more comfortable than Leith makes planes sound.." Veemon seemed to regard that correction as some kind of moral victory over Shoutmon if his expression meant anything. "Would you really do that for him, though? That would be amazing!"
"'Specially 'cause he's only got the money for one more night at the inn."
It almost looked like Veemon was going to passive-aggressively dig at Shoutmon, but he had to admit, "Partly because of that, yeah." It seemed Shoutmon had gone through his own drink almost as fast as Bellamy, but considering how much he'd already had before Colin even showed up it hardly seemed to affect him. "But you'd have to convince him, too."

Bellamy somewhat regretted that outburst, given that he was now on the ground with some degree of pain. But with what remained of his dignity he got back on his feet, righted his fallen chair and sat back down. "Have some juice, Bells" Luke offered, pouring a glass of non-alcoholic beverage for him. Bellamy accepted. He'd pretend the last minute never happened. And the fact that Shoutmon had suffered a similar misfortune removed any malice the Impmon might have felt for him. Veemon seemed to be receptive to the offer. Colin confirmed it with a nod. "Yeah, Daedalus is more of an airship than a plane. He's got individual bedrooms, the main cabin room is pretty roomy and comfortable and has an entertainment system if the need arises, plus we can stock enough food in the galley for meals, although I cook and I admit I'm kind of plain at it...""Eh, you're better than us, Col" Bellamy assured his partner. The Impmon tended to cook food too much so that he often burned or overcooked, while Luke tended to be too cautious and made his food either raw or over-seasoned. Since Colin had been tasked with helping to cook for his family since he turned 10, his simple but reliable recipes got the three of them through enough. They then pointed out that they would actually have to convince Leith to do that, which was true, and kind of presented itself as a challenge, given what they knew of him so far. Colin was honestly a little bit nervous about the thought of talking to him in such an emotional state; facing rejection by his own family and the prospect of a life without their assistance. It was something he had only fathomed in his nightmares.
But, well, he was beginning to think of this as more of a duty than a favour. Colin enjoyed helping others, and it seemed that Leith was in need of help, so, there was nothing else for it than to try his best. Especially since in addition to all this, Leith was apparently caught up in the complexity that was Niko. "Well, I can't promise anything, but, we can try our best to help Leith out" he answered Veemon.

Like Veemon said, though, there was still the issue of getting Leith onboard in both the figurative and literal sense. So the blue digimon asked for the check soon as Colin committed to the offer. Once it was paid, Veemon complimented Colin, "You really are a good kid, you know."
At least the inn was within reasonable walking distance. Normally Raidramon was Leith's preferred form of transport for its healthy combination of cheapness, speed, safety, and comfort (though that last one took some practice), but that wasn't an option while the Tamer was holed up elsewhere. While Veemon led, Shoutmon hung back by Bellamy because, "I like this guy! He-" After stumbling a little, Shoutmon finished, "-cracks me up, even if he can't take his liquor for shit!" Not wanting to be responsible for Shoutmon just then was also another part of the reason why Veemon tried to stay ahead of him, at least until reaching Leith's, Veemon's, and Shoutmon's room at the inn.
Veemon himself had expected Leith to have been asleep at this time of night, but he could hear the young man absentmindedly strumming away from outside. The song was actually an ironically happy sounding one, but given that this wasn't quite Leith's style Veemon knew this was a concerning sign, even if it wasn't a new one. Veemon tried to be polite by knocking, but as soon as he finished Shoutmon stepped forward and barged right in. "Shoutmon!"
"Shoutmon?" Leith's idle playing stopped instantly, at which point he sat up and brushed some hair out of his eyes. "You know there're probably people sleeping in the next-" But the young man interrupted himself and even stood up when he saw there were other, unexpected visitors. "Guys? What are you doing here?" The young man actually looked fairly well put-together for someone who'd supposedly been depressed and effectively homeless the past couple days. His hair was neat, even unusually so, and his clothes seemed clean. He was even in pajamas - a Hard Rock Cafe shirt from Tokyo and some fuzzy Walking Dead themed pants without shoes - so he at least planned to go to bed eventually, it appeared. It was probably going to be soon, too, if his groggy expression and tone of voice meant anything.

Colin was honestly a little surprised when Veemon offered to cover the check. He opened his mouth to try and insist that the costs would come from his pocket, but stopped when he felt Luke's paw on the back of his hand.
"Maybe let them take the lead in this case for now, Col?" the Elecmon whispered. Colin supposed he had a point there, but still, he didn't want to come across as someone who was only in this for the money.
"Thanks, Veemon. I'll make it up to you" he said, thinking that was all he could say on that for the moment.
As they made their way to the Sandy Pineapple, it seemed Shoutmon took a liking to Bellamy, although just because he couldn't well take his drink.
"Well, that's kinda on him" Luke said loftily. "I mean cripes, Bells, you're barely a quarter the mass of a human and you go and chug down a drink as strong as that, what the heck's up with that?"
"Nyeh, bitch-bitch-bitch" Bellamy snapped back, waving his paw around like a sock puppet to mock his brother. Luke took a deep breath and decided it wasn't worth pursuing this onward for the moment. Well, alright then.
For now they followed Veemon and Shoutmon up to Leith's room. Obviously he seemed surprised to see them when he woke up. So Colin cleared his throat and tried to think of a way to make clear their intentions.
"Hi, Leith, we saw your thing on the Tamernet, and... Veemon filled us in on the details" the teenager stated, a little awkwardly. "So, I just thought we'd come and let you know, if you need something to do and want a place to stay, we can help you there. Namely... well, offering you a ride on our airship mercenary, Daedalus".
For now Colin would wait to see how Leith would react to that. If he refused, well, that would be a shame, but understandable at the same time.

Leith frowned when Colin admitted that Veemon had spilled the beans. Still, that didn't answer, "Wait, but how did you know where to find us? I didn't-" It was only then Leith reached across to the night table, plucked the digivice, and checked to find Veemon had discreetly posted after Leith had. On finding this, the young man cast indirect eye contact at Veemon, who himself met Leith's gaze without backing down from the nonverbal scolding. It seemed like the two of them were having some kind of telepathic argument before, so it appeared, Leith resigned it and instead turned to Colin. "Look, no, I can't do that. Thanks for caring enough to come - like, seriously, no joke - but if I let you do one more nice thing for me, I'll be so deep in moral debt to you I might as well become your freakin' slave."
But Shoutmon, after belching fairly loudly and rudely, had a counterpoint: "Yeah? Well if you don't check out of this room by tomorrow, you're gonna be in money debt." By the conflicted look on Leith's face, this was a reality he probably acknowledged.
"Leith, you have to go home eventually," Veemon jumped in then, "But if you really need more time, please go with them."
"I can't-" Leith paced a moment to buy time and think of what he'd say with a hand covering his face until he spoke again. "...I'm sick of being someone else's problem, guys. That's all I've been since I met Veemon! I'm just your problem, someone you have to put up with and take care of. Colin, I've already been your problem when some crazy chick came after me, and I was that guy Adrian's problem when I blew his approach against that damn Elecmon." Leith paused his tirade to add for Luke's sake, "No offense. Now Mom and Dad see me as just someone who might just put them in danger, and I just- I wanna be freakin' worth something already! I wanna be the one who takes care of others, not the other way around! I wanna do something important and good for other people. You guys know the whole reason I picked up a guitar in the first place? It was because that was how I thought I could become something signif-"
"-You're gettin' off topic, dude."
Leith tried to disguise his tear wiping as wiping his eyes from sleepiness instead. He wasn't full-on sobbing, but he was certainly getting emotional despite his admittedly very good attempts to hide it behind a neutral countenance. "Look, I... I don't know."

Colin raised his eyebrow at Leith's statement, then folded his arms. "You know, Leith... before I met these two I might have agreed with you" he began. "Growing up, I never really made much friends. I kinda thought that friendship was transactional. Just an ongoing exchange of favors. But... some day, you come across someone as caring as Luke or someone as awesome as Bellamy and you just do so much transactions with them that you just forget, then go "Ah, fuck it, who cares about the balance owed?" and... you just let it go and just stick up for the ones you care for. It's a really nice feeling, and I hope one day you can experience it for yourself".
Luke and Bellamy blinked up at Colin with stunned expressions. The boy hadn't been this expressive before, but, he had been their partner for nearly two years now, and they supposed that was enough for him to figure out their relationship in words. They exchanged surprised, but kind of proud looks, and said nothing to add to that.
It seemed that Leith's financial situation was true, given he didn't deny what Shoutmon said. And then Leith came clean with the whole story. His feelings, that he didn't want to be a burden to anyone. And his family situation, that his parents seemed to be scared, that he wanted to be able to help others rather than be helped. Colin blinked a little with the realization that Leith seemed to be in the same state of mind that he was when he was trying to make a place for himself in the digital world. Even though Leith was at least 4 years older than him, Colin kind of recognized that zeal of a new tamer.
Still though, he seemed to be teetering on either side of a decision. Colin considered his words, glancing at both of his partners first, then looked back up and spoke.
"Hey, listen, I don't mean 'stay with us and we'll look after you'" he explained. "I mean it more like... 'We've got jobs, we've also got a place to stay. Why not join up with us for a bit and you can help us out with our work'"?
He hoped this explanation would help out a bit. If not, Luke cleared his throat and tried to summarize it a bit better.
"Basically, we've got PROFIT business and we'll have Daedalus as our HQ. If you like, there's accommodation if you help us with our job". Maybe putting it like that might make Leith realize he wasn't being mollycoddled here and was being offered a fair deal?

The more Colin and Luke talk, the harder the young man visibly tried to deflect and tune out their insistences, starting with avoiding eye contact and ending with holding his hands out and gesturing to try and get them to stop talking altogether. When they finally did, Leith spoke fast since he was afraid he wouldn't get a word in edgewise. "Alright, OK, stop. I'll buy, so stop selling." Veemon let out a very unsubtle sigh or relief upon Leith's acceptance. "I heard that." The young man glanced at a corner, then, which had a couple suitcases in it, only one of which was open and even still was full of clothes. "Good news is it won't take long to pack." As the young man zipped up the open case, he remarked to his two partners, "I'm assuming you guys are already on board with this if you brought Colin to make that offer."
Veemon finally smiled and admitted, "Of course we are!" while Shoutmon casually shrugged and lay back on the bed, getting oddly comfortable for someone about to leave.
"And as for you guys," Leith preambled as he stood his bags up and turned to look at Colin, Luke, and Bellamy. His expression then looked a little unsure but not quite so stressed. "I know what real friendship is and how it works and what it feels like. I just... I didn't know I'd earned that with you guys." He stepped forward, bags in tow, and looked them all in the eye sequentially before addressing them all. "Fine. I don't owe you any finite amount. I'll just do my best because that's what friends are supposed to do."
"Ugh, quit being so serious already! You're giving me a headache!"
"I'm pretty sure Leith isn't why you have a headache," Veemon jabbed back, "I'm sorry for him. He isn't like this when he's sober."
"Mmm... yeah, he is," Leith tentatively disagreed.
That made Veemon exhale out his nose audibly from amusement before himself also admitting, "...yes, he is."
"I can hear you, assholes!"
Veemon waved Shoutmon off dismissively. "Why don't we get going? I'd like to hear the details of the job on the way."
