Getting Away (Leith Hunt)

Colin couldn't help but smile at that statement. "Eh, you never know. I thought Bellamy wouldn't be the hug type when we first started as partners, turned out that he likes hugging a lot. Oh, don't tell him I said that though, he's got an image to hold up after all, eheh" he finished with a weak chuckle.
None of the three spoke for the moment as Veemon and Shoutmon returned to the center of the main cabin. There Shoutmon spoke his piece. Colin shifted his eyes downward as Shoutmon said he knew they were playing them. Then, he spoke the rest of his mind to Leith and Veemon.
Bellamy gave a look of approval, hoping to encourage this open, honest talk as Shoutmon spoke of his problems with them. He spoke it succinctly and politely, in a way that was not rude or would give cause for an escalation for violence. Simply a mature voice of disapproval for his current relationship with them.
Then came the moment for reply, and Veemon simply apologized, making Luke breathe with relief. So far things seemed to be going alright.
There was silence for a moment after Shoutmon and Veemon had spoken, which made Colin think now was the time for Leith to say something. "Leith, do you have anything to say to your partners?" he asked, carefully. He hoped that Leith would be able to take the chance and let his partners know that he was there for them both.

Leith didn't really think hard about what he was going to say on Colin's prompt. The reason? He wasn't really expecting to be called on at all. That's why the first thing out of his mouth was just a stunned, "...What?" almost like he didn't understand the cause for the question.
"Leith, it's my fault. Luke and I talked it out, and I realized I've been awful for no reason. I'm sorry."
"Whoa, whoa, buttercup," Shoutmon interjected as he held a hand out to stop Veemon talking. "That's nice - sticking up for your friend. Cool. But I wanna hear it from you." 'You' was Leith if Shoutmon's gaze was any indication. "Come on, man. You're my Tamer." Still, Leith stood stunned, but now his reason was slightly different. This was a side of Shoutmon he'd not yet seen. He'd known this digimon to be the type who never let himself look weak, always escalating conflict as much as he had to in order to feel like he came out on top. Yet here he was, then, opening up and making himself vulnerable with a sort of quiet desperation in his tone.
Leith frowned, slumped his shoulders, and exhaled softly. "I haven't exactly embraced the change, have I?" He then glanced at Colin, remembering his earlier suggestion. The thought made the young man bite his lip uncomfortably, but to his credit he nevertheless stepped forward around the couch to stand before Shoutmon. After one last glance at Colin, then, Leith opened his arms and looked to Shoutmon, hoping he'd make the next move.
That move wasn't immediate. Shoutmon, looked Leith up and down with a skeptical expression before concluding, "Uh... no. Let's say it's the thought that counts and move on." But Veemon wasn't going to have any of that. He thought he was doing a good thing when he tried to push Shoutmon, gently but still firmly, toward Leith. That, however, only resulted in Shoutmon bumping into Leith and causing both to stumble back. "Knock it off!" the red dragon then scolded Shoutmon. "Know what? You're trying to be nice, so I'm gonna let that one go. But I ain't a hugger."
Almost ironically, Leith lowered his arms and chuckled at this result. "Deal," he agreed with a small smile.

There was little else that Colin and his partners had to say in this matter. The three of them remained silent as they watched the other trio work out their problems. That was what they were glad to see. Hopefully there wasn't anything else they would need to do in this situation, that it had hopefully been resolved. "Well then..." Bellamy said after it seemed they had finished, raising the remote control to the television screen in front of them. "Now that that's hopefully settled, how 'bout we all relax and watch somethin' nice eh?"Supposing Digitopia probably wasn't going to cut it, he simply went back to the main menu of the streaming service and would offer the others their choice of movie to watch. Supposing that a heavy rave party on board Daedalus wasn't really in question, they could at least have a decent video night that would be good for the lot of them. While they had no alcohol, they had plenty of snacks to share. And, in Colin's personal experience, a movie night 5,000 feet above the ground in a luxurious airship cabin was kind of his idea of paradise. Even if they had had a rocky start, perhaps Leith and his partners had overcome a rocky hurdle tonight? And they could let that settle by relaxing and watching some entertainment in comfort? He hoped that was the right thing to do here.
However, the moment was interrupted by Daedalus's intercom, which had been silent for most of this time. "Pardon me for interrupting, but, I am receiving some... extraordinary signal from down below" the airship digimon reported.
"What's up, Daedalus?" Colin asked their mercenary friend. "Is it anything bad?"
"No, at least, it doesn't seem to be" Daedalus answered, currently flying over the Binary Archipelago. "Just... it seems to be a signal. Should I fly closer?"
A signal that didn't activate warning alarms was usually a good sign, so Colin followed his gut feelings. "Okay, Daedalus, let's fly in close".
The Heliodramon did so, descending in height to fly closer to whatever was happening below. As he descended, the signal seemed to be getting stronger. Just... what was this? Was it perhaps something to do with his passengers? It was truly curious.

"Dude, really?" Shoutmon groaned in response to Daedalus' interruption, "If it's not bad, is it really that important? We're kinda havin' a thing here!"
"Sit down again, guys. Just in case," Leith advised before very quickly taking his seat. Perhaps he was worried that, "Daedalus' cannon has a hell of a kick, remember?" Veemon agreed, so he sat back down, but Shoutmon declined. "Shoutmon?"
"Something feels..." Shoutmon never did specify what feels like what, but he did start to wander off toward one side of the airship.
"What are you feeling?"
"Just... shut up for a second. I just started liking you guys. Don't ruin it." Well, that shut up Shoutmon's partners quite effectively. It seemed they had no choice but to watch and wait. After a couple of moments, the red dragon then mumbled, "Oh.... I get it now... nice." This would normally have been where Leith piped up again, but the last thing he wanted was to upset a still tenuous sort of peace that had been established. So he kept waiting, though he grew more impatient by the second. At least they had a convenient countdown to the event: "Three... two... one..."
Something somewhat resembling a very small star materialized a couple of feet above Shoutmon's head, something he seemed prepared for because he had his arms out like he was prepared to catch something. Turned out he needed to be, because the 'star' sparkled brightly once, then dropped like a sack of bricks straight into Shoutmon's hands... and then straight to the ground. "Ah, shit! Fuck, that hurts!"
The object stopped shining when it hit the ground, at which point the reason for Shoutmon's pain became apparent: the little blue metal object was shaped like a sea urchin, circular but littered with very long, needle-like spikes. "What the hell?" Leith stood up, then, but before he could really do anything, the object became engulfed in light again. Then it flew at Leith - specifically his digivice - and disappeared inside it just like using the V-Pet appeared. When Leith checked his screen, he read out loud, "Digimental of Peace?"
"Peace, my ass!" Shoutmon whined, "That thing's a weapon!"

Colin by now was fairly confident of Daedalus and his sensors. In addition to that, the airship digimon had come to be very patient and tolerant of his passengers and their needs. After all, he had tolerated Bellamy and Coronamon often enough when the two of them were on board. And by now, Colin had come to know him as a genuinely selfless, generous and good digimon that he was proud to be friends with.
The teenager watched as Shoutmon seemed to be affected by the signal too. This made him curious, what did this mean exactly? Was it something affecting him? Colin and Luke glanced at Bellamy, who had been talking to Shoutmon all this time.
"Don't ask me, I dunno what's happenin'" the Impmon shrugged in response to their glances.
Then a star seemed to form above Shoutmon's head. Colin and his partners made an almost synchronized "whoa!" noise as they saw it. While it was unusual, it didn't seem to be in any way threatening.
The star then faded into a solid object, then dropped. It seemed to hurt Shoutmon as he tried to catch it. Then it zipped straight into Leith's digivice.
"Ohh, a digimental" Colin said, understanding now. It seemed that Daedalus had descended within its range on the ground below, and with Shoutmon and Leith's bond forming, it seemed it had been summoned to seal the deal.
"Come to think of it that does look a bit too spikey to be somethin' that represents peace" Bellamy remarked. "But, still though, I know those things are genuine, so, congrats, pal" he said, offering Shoutmon a pat on the back if he didn't object.
"Daedalus, any other signals?" Colin asked their airship friend.
"None to report now that the digimental has been collected" Daedalus answered. "So then, shall I assume a holding pattern for the night?"
Colin glanced at Leith. "Would that be okay?" he asked.

Shoutmon let the pat on the back happen, probably because that was a less intimate and personal gesture than an outright embrace. Even better, he actually looked over his shoulder at the Impmon and gave the closest thing to a smile he could with smarting hands. "...thanks, 'Impster.'"
"That actually sounds ideal," was Leith's answer to Colin's inquiry. "Thanks for... eh, you get it by now, right? Because I feel like a broken record." At that point Leith gave out a very powerful yawn. "Alright, I'm gonna call it. It's..." Leith checked his watch only to discover, "...right. Still not used to that. But it's Way Too Late O'Clock, and I wanna get to bed while things actually seem almost good. Guys?"
Leith didn't need to elaborate any further than that for his friends to understand his question. "I'm gonna go, too. Shoutmon?"
"What Leith said," Shoutmon agreed before hissing, "Fuck, whatever that spikeball turns me into better better be some crazy strong spike monster after this."
"Frankly, I'll be shocked if you need an egg for that," Leith half quipped, half complimented.

Bellamy grinned at Shoutmon's response. He recognized that he wasn't good with physical contact so didn't make any further means of doing so. "That's okay, pal" he answered.
Following that, Leith seemed to agree with the idea to retire for the night. Once that was known, Colin smiled and indicated any of the unoccupied cabins in Daedalus's sleeping area. "Well, feel free to pick the one you like the most then" Colin offered with a smile. They were all similarly equipped so it wouldn't truly matter. Just that once Leith and partners retired for the night they wouldn't be disturbed again until morning, unless there was an emergency. But that was a very small possibility in this area.
Either way, Colin and his partners bade their goodnights to Leith and his partners as they would proceed to pick a cabin to sleep in. Supposing they'd best do the same, the trio made their bedtime preparations and cleaning, getting ready to go to bed themselves.
Bellamy stubbornly stayed up for a little while, but when Colin exited the shower, dressed in his pyjamas and found the Impmon fast asleep, he carried him to their own cabin for sleeping.
For now, it seemed all was quiet aboard Daedalus. The mechanical airship digimon would keep an eye out for the night, and would keep his passengers in utmost safety for the night. Then, tomorrow, hopefully they would figure out what to do next.
Still though, silence would reign on the decks as Colin settled down with his partners in his cabin, quickly falling asleep after the efforts of the day.

"Sounds good," was Leith's response to being told he could sleep where he pleased, but of course he remembered an earlier comment that each cabin was just like any other. For this reason, the young man picked a room at random, stepped inside, and called over his shoulder, "'Night, guys!" before almost closing the door behind himself. However, he noticed when he called that Shoutmon or Veemon were oddly close, like they were intending to walk inside with him. "Huh?"
In response to Leith's confusion, Veemon himself became confused, at first looking around for what might have caused it but then giving up and issuing his own, "What?"
"I mean... there's a bunch of rooms. We don't have to share tonight."
Veemon looked surprise by this fact despite how intuitive it was. He explained, "Oh... I never even thought about that. I've been sharing a room with you every night for so long."
That was a fact Leith hadn't thought of. "Oh... that's actually true." Leith then glanced at the pair of beds in his room of choice. "You know... we could still share if you want. Looks like it's made for two humans, and you don't even take up the room of one. Plus it's still got an extra bed, so that beats the floor, right?" One has to credit Leith for how successfully he played his feelings close to the chest; he did a great job of putting the choice on Veemon so he didn't have to admit he had himself gotten used to sharing a room and wasn't keen on separating anymore. Veemon wasn't fooled - he rarely was - but he was good enough not to call Leith on it. Instead, he just gratefully smiled and joined him inside. "You comin' Shout?"
"I only see two beds in there, dude," Shoutmon declined.
Though he still tried to play it neutral, Leith showed his hand a little when he coaxed, "Well, yeah, but you can have the single one if you want." He realized too late that he just volunteered Veemon to give up his single bed, too, but when he tried to add, "I mean, if-" Veemon swiftly interrupted him.
"It's fine. Really!" Leith believed him without a doubt, and so did Shoutmon. That made the little red dragon agree.
Well, at least something good seemed to come out of the whole exercise. Veemon seemed sincerely ready to stop antagonizing Shoutmon, Shoutmon was able to move on, and Leith got to see a conflict on irrational grounds get solved, showing him it was possible. This was something Veemon emphasized to his Tamer with a clear intent, but Leith insisted he just wasn't ready to face them yet.
At some point during the night, the young man just on the verge of finally getting to sleep was brought back to reality by the feeling of Veemon wrapping his arms around Leith's torso and pulling himself in. Leith quietly whispered the digimon's name in reply, but Veemon was unresponsive. Feeling a little self-conscious, then, the Tamer looked across the room at Shoutmon to check whether he could be seen, but Veemon's 'twin' was just as deep asleep as he was. So, instead of bothering Veemon to stop doing something that (surprising to Leith) didn't bother the young man much, he instead relaxed again and let it happen. He was fairly glad for the companionship in any case.
After all, none of the day changed the fact that he and his partners were still effectively on their own with no one but each other. Leith has left the scene.
