Man, I really need to be more careful about my identity. Thank goodness most of these kids still think I'm human... Chenjin thought, recalling that time that he had forgotten to turn on his DRM, so a Digimon was easily able to spot him. It really made him think about how others had perceived him in this school.
Currently it was around three o'clock on a Friday afternoon. Chenjin was just chilling out in his homeroom even though the day had ended, as he was still invested into this book he was reading. Chenjin had a deep respect for human books and movies, as they were amazing stories that the humans had thought up that Chenjin could never have dreamed to even exist at all.
Eventually Chenjin began to feel a little bit hungry, so he decided that it was time to pack up and call it a day. He had put away his schoolbooks, his papers and a bunch of his other stuff and headed out of the classroom to put away his school shoes. What Chenjin did not realize what that he ended up slamming right into someone as he walked out of class, causing both students to fall down to the ground.
"Damn, I'm so clumsy... are you okay?" Chenjin asked the student as he got up, extending his hand out to them. "I'm so sorry about that..."

Skye's last class of the day was Japanese History, which she was severely disadvantaged in for not having grown up in Japan. a 16-year-old girl shared this course with that weird Chenjin guy, who she had seen around but never bothered speaking to. She was a little too introverted for that, not to mention that she was still struggling with the local language. Her American origins were probably very obvious to Chenjin between the pale face under her straight, long brown hair and her southern American accent. "Sumimasen," was the word she knew that was closest to, "Excuse me," as unlike her brother she was much more conflict-averse.
Skye was holding her phone, which got knocked to the floor. There, the screen displayed a text message in English: Are Mom and Dad home? Thankfully the device was undamaged as the girl picked it up.
"It's, uh, it's OK," Skye told Chenjin as she stood back up, saying it in correct Japanese but only barely.

Having studied the different races of humans immensely before coming to the human world, Chenjin definitely knew that the girl he had run into was an American girl. She looked completely out of place here in Japan with all the other students, and Chenjin noticed how much she was struggling with the Japanese language. Chenjin decided to start speaking to her in near-perfect English.
"You are an American, yes? America's primary language is English, so it makes sense that you would struggle with it.. unless you've lived here for a long time now." He hoped that she just moved here, otherwise that could've been more insulting than it probably already sounded.
"Your name is... Skye, right? My name is Chenjin Takada, and I moved to Tokyo from the Japanese island Osumi. So I know what it is like, being in a new place with new people. I am not too busy tonight, so if you wish I could tutor you in Japanese, make conversation easier for you. If you want to, that is."

After a little while of sharing a class, it made enough sense that Chenjin knew Skye's name. What surprised her was that this boy claiming to be born and raised in Japan was speaking fluent English. Chenjin wasn't the first she'd met in Japan after so many months, but she was a little surprised about just how confidently he was able to speak so well. That wasn't usual. She could only assume he did a whole lot of study in school his whole life, though. What other explanation was there?
One thing was for sure: Skye sure could use some Japanese lessons. "That... really?" The girl smiled. "I didn't know it was that obvious. I am really having trouble in school with the language thing. You'd really do that?" Skye breathed a sigh of relief. "I'm not doing anything."
And that's the story of how Chenjin got himself invited to the Crowther residence. Lucky for everyone involved, the parents were indeed not home. Of course, Skye had completely forgotten to inform her brother of this fact despite the fact that he asked earlier. In fact... she had completely forgotten about her brother. That was why she jumped and yelped when she brought Chenjin through the front door of their home. "What's that about? I told you we were coming." Leith was standing right in front of the door, dressed in his usual death-by-black style and clearly older than Chenjin's little girlfriend. He was also wearing his black and blue D-3 on his wrist like usual, since he wasn't scared of the average person knowing what it meant, and he wanted the non-average people to know who he was. "You... brought company? You forgot I was coming."
Skye tried to smile but just showed the egg on her face. She wasn't quite sure what to do here. Actually, Leith had a similar expression on his face. "Leith, this is Chenjin. He's teaching me Japanese."
This made Leith raise an eyebrow. "No kidding? Hey, what's your price?" Leith kidded, "I don't know much more than she does." Well this sure put a damper on Leith's plans. He couldn't very well let the others be seen by this guy. Luckily they were upstairs and listening in through Leith's digivice, but what he didn't know was that Chenjin could probably sense them with that sixth sense of digimon. They were upstairs, above him.

"It probably wasn't that obvious," Chenjin told Skye, "or maybe it was. I dunno, I've always had a keen eye for things so it's like everything is obvious to me. And of course I could teach you some Japanese, I don't like seeing people upset. Can you show me the way to your house?"
And just like that, Chenjin had followed his new-found friend all the way to her house, in the Residential District. As soon as Skye opened the door, there was another human standing in the way. He had REALLY long hair for a male human, Chenjin thought, and he wore "glasses." He was definitely older, so that meant...
...he was Skye's father.
"Oh, I'm sorry for intruding sir," Chenjin apologized, entering the house and extending a hand towards Leith. "I'm a classmate of Skye's. My name's Chenjin Takada, and I offered to tutor her in some Japanese. I hope that is okay, with you, right? Also, I don't charge for lessons, haha."
It was at this moment that Chenjin sensed something. This time, it seemed to be coming from upstairs. He curiously looked upward, wondering where exactly he felt that sensation come from... he couldn't place his finger on it.

Leith accepted the handshake with a smile, but once their hands made contact his expression changed. While it was true that Chenjin was being perfectly respectful by American standards, but Leith was used to Japanese people bowing to him when introducing themselves. In fact Leith did that during the handshake, but it seemed the stranger didn't. Was he just aware of American culture and respecting that? That was Leith's explanation, anyway. How could he know the alternative? He couldn't while that DRM was on.
The lack of bow was made up for, however, by an unusually respectful and formal tone, which drove Leith a bit aback, though it was hardly a bad thing. "It's... it's not like you need my permission, dude," Leith tentatively replied with a more informal attitude. "Especially if it's free. Hey, Skye, I think I like your boyfriend."
"He's not my boyfriend! I just met him today."
"Well that explains a lot. Anyway, I'm Leith." He thought it would be obvious that he was her brother since he was close to her age and living inside the house, so he didn't bother introducing himself as that. "Skye, I'm gonna be upstairs." The way Leith said 'upstairs' might have made it clear to someone listening close it meant more than its face value. "I'm guessing this was an impromptu thing, but, uh, remember I don't have as much time as you." Leith gestured to his digivice, meaning to remind her that every day in the digital world was just a little over three hours at home. Leith headed up then, and left the two alone, but maybe Chenjin caught a second voice up there with Leith.
"Who else is here?"
"Shh."
A door closer.
Skye escorted Chenjin to the kitchen and sat across from him at a table. "Sorry. I forgot he would be here... but, wanna start?"

The disguised Digimon was pleasantly surprised by how this day was going. Skye and her father seemed like really nice humans, and he was glad that he was getting to know them more. Chenjin was also relieved that Leith seemed to be more like those carefree kinds of humans, saying that Chenjin didn't need permission to help out their daughters like some fathers are like.
Chenjin blushed a very bright red when Leith claimed that he was Skye's boyfriend. Chenjin had NO experience in that kind of thing, and he didn't even research it too well, so what was he supposed to do?! "I-I'm not her boyfriend. I just met her today," Chenjin ended up saying at the same time as Skye.
If Leith thought he was being sneaky with the way he was phrasing his words, he wasn't. Chenjin definitely noticed something off by the way he claimed that he was going upstairs, and noticed how he gestured to his watch.
The watch was a D-3. Chenjin's eyes widened. On top of that, he could faintly hear an extra voice when Leith went upstairs. There were Digimon in the house... did Leith know that Chenjin...?
Chenjin snapped out of his thoughts when Skye asked if they would start, leading him to the kitchen. "Right," he said as he sat down at the table. "Let's start out with something simple, so I can see your range in Japanese. Say this phrase: 'Hello, how are you?'"

So the pair of classmates got down to business. Well, the first thing Chenjin asked her to say was an easy one. She had to say it to her teachers every day, plus it was just super basic stuff. Skye was able to correctly translate the phrase to Chenjin as, "Kon'nichiwa, genkidesuka?" While she wasn't sure how the phrase could simultaneously be reduced to two words and expanded out to eight syllables, but at least she got it. "I got the easy ones if I can remember 'em, but I can't, like... talk about food and stuff. Except sushi because I love sushi." Well, even though Chenjin wasn't Skye's boyfriend, it was awful nice of him to tutor her like this. She was very grateful. Now that she was sitting across from the kid, suddenly he seemed a lot less like a weirdo, and she got a look at how cute he kinda was...
Meanwhile, Leith shut his bedroom door and declared, "I got the winner," to the pair of digimon playing a Halo death match against each other. "We got time to kill. Apparently Skye got a Japanese tutor."

Oh wow, Chenjin was impressed by how well she pronounced that. She probably had at least a little experience just from living here, but still... wow. "That was actually really good pronunciation." Chenjin complimented her. "And I agree, anything other than the basics can be a little bit tricky. Let's try this phrase:"
"Watashi wa kudamono o taberu no ga sukidesu." Chenjin said this phrase very slowly so that Skye would be able to follow along. He would keep repeating this phrase after each of Skye's attempts so that she could pronounce it as perfectly as she could. After that, the tutoring would go on for another hour or so. Hopefully Skye was getting better at her Japanese after this.
An hour or so into the tutoring, Chenjin couldn't ignore that feeling from upstairs. "I'll be right back, I just have to use the restroom," he told Skye, getting out of his seat and heading upstairs. Quietly and slowly, Chenjin approached Leith's bedroom door and pressed his ear against it. He had his DRM on, so no Digimon could easily sense him. He could listen in and see if there really were Digimon on the other side of that door...

"Oh, that's bullshit!"
"I think the word you're looking for is 'skill,'" Leith smugly countered after sniping Shoutmon from across the map a second time. Shoutmon stood and threw his controller at Leith's head. Leith ducked, but it hit the wall and shattered, damaging the wall as well. Leith almost cared, but since his Xbox didn't work in his real home now, nor could anyone make him pay for the wall, why should he have cared? Still, someone just threw a controller at his head. "Damn, dude!"
"One on one! Right now!"
"Guys, be quiet! They're busy downstairs." Whoops. Leith almost forgot.
"Oh, yeah, Skye's stiffing us. What's that digimon got that we don't got?"
"The ability to speak Japanese and English fluently combined with the patience to teach someone who doesn't." Leith said that matter-of-factly before fully registering what Shoutmon had just insinuated. "Wait, did you say 'digimon?'"
"Well, yeah. What, you didn't know?"
"No! How do you guys know?"
"He's wearing a holosuit, but we can still sense digimon," Veemon explained, "I guess we just got used to sensing digimon in Rosewood and Quantum..."
"Where is that guy?" Leith stood up and stormed to the door, thrusting it open and searching for Chenjin.

When Chenjin listened in on Leith, he heard two other voices in there with him that were definitely not his. They seemed to be... playing some kind of video game, from what he could gather. One of them seemed to get really angry, and after that was some kind of "thud" kind of noise, followed by more chatter... and yep. They knew that Chenjin was a Digimon...
And Leith did not sound happy about it.
Before Leith could even get up, Chenjin headed right back downstairs and sat in his seat, ready to continue lessons with Skye. If Leith were to come down and interrogate Chenjin, the disguised Digimon would simply play dumb. He would respond to his questions with general phrases like "What are you talking about?" or "Digi...mon? Is that like Pokemon?" Of course they'd be more related to whatever Leith would ask.

Leith wasn't going to just lay down and take Chenjin's evasion. "Where did you say you were from again?" he poked, not believing the Gatchmon's cover story. "Save it, Chenjin. My sister already knows about digimon. Also... yeah, I guess it's kinda like Pokemon."
"Leith, what are you talking about?"
"Some digimon live in the real world, and they can disguise themselves as humans. I know how to break those disguises, though." Leith's right hand curled into a fist. "Holosuits can't take a hit."
"Leith, stop. That's enough." Veemon could hear the whole confrontation from upstairs and didn't much care to let it go any farther than that. Naturally, Shoutmon was in tow. "Look... Chenjin, was it? Leith's a digimon Tamer, and we're his partners. I'm Veemon, and this is Shoutmon. I promise your secret is safe with us. However, Skye is Leith's sister, and I think she has a right to know who's a digimon."

Chenjin raised an eyebrow, looking like he was confused by what Leith was even saying. "Didn't I tell you? I'm from Osumi. I have no idea what you're going on about, really." He was a bit caught off guard when Leith said Skye already knew about Digimon, but still... it was nice having a human friend who saw him as a human and not as something... not human. And he wanted to keep the friendship like that up.
That was going to be a bit harder to do sadly, since Leith was actually thinking about punching Chenjin right then and there just to prove that Chenjin was indeed a Digimon. Things got even more complicated when a Veemon and a Shoutmon came downstairs, the Veemon trying to explain how his secret would be kept if he just admitted to it. And that was something Chenjin was not going to do.
Staring at the Digimon wide-eyed for a few seconds, he immediately began packing up his stuff, speaking in a hurried manner. "Well it was nice to meet you Skye, hope your Japanese gets better, I need to go home now, bye!" And just like that, he was out the door, trying to hurry back to his dorm.
And knowing Chenjin's luck, this was going to be the sign of yet another chase... great.

So. That was how it was gonna be, huh? Well, tempting as it was to just let this go, there were two reasons why that wasn't possible. For one, Leith knew his sister was gonna see this imposter in class again, meaning this matter wasn't settled. The other reason was that Skye shouted after the digimon, "Chenjin! Wait!" before glaring at her brother. "What the fuck was that?" she shrieked at Leith before rising out of her chair and trying to track down the digimon. "Chenjin!"
"Skye, hang on!" it was useless. She was out the door. "Alright, she's gonna thank me for this when I figure this all out. V-Pet." Both of Leith's digimon became contained in his digivice. "Can you guide me with your senses to track that guy?"
"We could, but... is it that important to you?"
"No offense, but the digital thing has been hazardous to my health. It's Skye's prerogative to get in that or not, but she deserves an informed decision." Leith sighed. "Fuck. Dad was right." On that melancholy note, he, too, began to pursue Chenjin.

Not one. Chenjin couldn't have ONE normal relationship in the human world. He always screwed something up and gave his identity away, or there just happened to be a Tamer around who sensed him. This hurt Chenjin greatly, since he wanted a human friend that saw him as an equal, and not just as some kind of alien. He really thought Skye was going to be that person.
Then Leith ruined everything.
It didn't matter anymore though; he fulfilled what he said he was going to do, which was tutor Skye in Japanese, and that was it. He didn't even react when Skye called out after him when he walked out the door. Chenjin didn't exactly run, but he always made sure that he was a good amount of distance from Leith and Skye when they both began to chase after him. He had to find some way to lose himself from them...
Eventually Chenjin reached the subway station and made his way underground. He just had to get on a specific train and take it all the way back to Shibuya Academy. Then he could put this whole sucky day behind him. He just had to make sure that they didn't catch up to him first...
