The sound of Mao's screech made Mitsuharu widen his eyes. The Samurai moved, making way for the dragon to impact the boulders. Almost all of the rocks imploded immediately, just by making contact with her weapon. Small pieces of stone flew anywhere. The power Mao had in her new form was simply amazing, no doubt.
"Let's go!" With the plaque under her arm, Kissu started moving forward.
They were out of the chamber. Now they needed to go through the tunnel and back into the surface.
... If only it were so easy! The aftermath from the battle was a lot more evident inside the stretcher path. Not only boulders kept blocking the way, but more rocks kept falling from above. Using her broom to zap all of the falling rocks, Kissu kept pushing forward, expecting for Mitsuharu and Cyberdramon to open the way for them. The trip back definitely felt longer than the one going in, but they seemed to be almost there!
They could see the light of the surface up above, constantly being obtruded by rocks falling from the walls of the tunnel that went up. One thing was for sure: they were going to need a ride. The Babamon and the Musyamon jumped on top of Mao, so she could start flying up. All the while, the Ashikagas protected their ship from any debris falling on top of them. With each meter they ascended, the rocks around them seemed to fall more unexpectedly. The entrance to the Digital Underworld would be sealed forever after this.
Bad news. One of these unexpected falling rocks was falling towards them. And it was big. It was huge, actually.
"We need to go for that one!" Kissu shouted, so everyone focused their attacks on that massive boulder.
But this one seemed to be one tough to beat rock! Mitsuharu threw slashes at the falling object, Kissu zapped it with her broom, but it wasn't enough! It was reducing its size, but they weren't quite breaking it!
Kissu had used both of her arms to grab her broom and focus all of her energy into the rock. She felt something next to her slip.
"No!" The plaque. It was free-falling down! The elder stared as the relic falling. What should she do? Jump to grab it? Or keep helping the crew eliminate that rock?
Fortunately, she didn't have to make a decision. A bolt of electricity passed by her, going down. It stopped right by the plaque and stopped its fall mid-air, grabbing it. When the ball of energy acquired showed its real form...
"Pike!" A smile graced the Babamon's face. An exploding sound coming from above made her turned her head back at the path in front of them. The giant boulder coming their way had been obliterated. The figure of Ramma, who seemed like he had just thrown a mighty punch, was falling on top of Cyberdramon now.
Now that the boulder was out, a smiling pink-haired girl could be seen by the exit above, looking down and waving her arm high up in the air.
"Great job, everyone!" She shouted.
They made it.

The sheer power exuded by this form was almost intoxicating to Mao, who had previously only known what the form of Vemmon proper could give her. Yet, the question of if this would be enough to get them back to the surface before the earth collapsed around them hung in the air.
The answer, however, was clear as day. They had to break their way through. Continuously. As they drew closer, it became clear that their final obstacle was one boulder they were having difficulties with. Mao jabbed her spear forward to fire a blast of energy at the boulder, before the thing was obliterated!
Not by her, though. It seems that several things happened at once. Pike and Ramma had come to their rescue, and Cyberdramon soared up to catch the latter, before sailing up towards where Tsukiko was, and setting him down. Cyberdramon then fell to a knee as it dissipated to reveal one -sweaty- and tired Mao. "...Please tell me there's not anymore rocks falling near me." She croaked, before she put a hand to her throat.
"...Oh, I can talk again." She murmured, before she smoothed her clothes out, and got to her feet, and turned to Tsukiko. "Thank you! So...Did you win?" That was the first thing she asked Tsu.

The group on top of Mao and the Cyberdramon herself barely made it outside. Pike also came out of the pit, moving in the form of a bolt of electricity and landing on the floor too. Everyone was panting, everyone seemed exhausted. Not even ten seconds later, the hole right at the middle of the fountain crumbled. It all remained blocked by rocks and dirt.
“That was too close.” Ramma kept trying to recover his breath, both hands on the floor.
“Is anyone hurt?” Tsukiko asked. Her blue eyes leering on the whole group. Then, her attention went to the Cyberdramon. “M-Mao?” She asked. The dragon started glowing and her best friend transformed back into her human form. “No, no, no, wait!” That was too soon! Tsukiko actually wanted to take a better look at it! Sadly, it was too late now. Well, the orange-haired girl couldn’t be blamed. After all, she had probably been through a lot.
No more rocks were falling on Mao. But a giant hug was coming her way! Tsukiko wrapped her arms around the girl and gave her the tightest of hugs. “You looked amazing!” That was worth being noted, right? Totally.
Of course, she immediately went to give their own share of hugs to the rest of the clan, even the new members. While she hugged Ramma, after going through Mitsuharu (who was back at his Bushi Agumon form) and Kissu, she turned her head towards Mao to answer her question.
“I… I think I did. I won two new members for my clan.” A huge grin appeared on her face as she raised two fingers towards the orange-haired human. Mao, Mitsuharu, and Kissu were still fairly close to each other, trying to reincorporate. Pike took the chance and approached them all at once.
“I-I’m…” The Thunderballmon bowed, his eyes closed. “… I’m very sorry for how I behaved! I understand you were just trying to help me!” He shouted, intensively. A trace of a smile formed in Kissu’s mouth, while Mitsuharu just nodded. But that wasn’t everything there was to say.
“I also hope you can forgive me and we can work together as members of the same clan!” It couldn’t get any more official than that. Pike and Ramma were members of the Ashikaga Clan now.
Kissu’s smile took its whole shape. “Welcome abroad then, dear.”
Mitsuharu stood up, looking at Pike right into his eyes, still holding a serious countenance. “If Sensei is fine with you joining, then so am I.” The dinosaur walked towards Mao and took something out of his robe. “I think Vemmon needed this.” He handled the item to the human. It was the totem Red Snatchmon was using.
While Tsukiko approached Mao to ask her how did it feel to turn into a freaking dragon, Mitsuharu just stared at the girl for a while. She had decided to fight a digimon by herself only to make him realize his mistakes. The pink-haired girl not only tried to help people and digimon, but she also actually cared about how they felt. It seemed like it didn’t matter how much time passed, his master’s determination never ceased to amaze him. He had to become a lot stronger if he wanted to be able to match that burning fire that laid within her heart.
Now… would Mao apologize Pike for his behavior?

"I'm not hurt, no..." Mao murmured, before she let out a squeak at Tsukiko suddenly hugging her! It was tight, it was incredibly tight! Did she really look amazing? She didn't catch much of a glimpse of her form, but she actually looked kind of monstrous. Like something that didn't really come from this world. An alien in the truest sense of the word.
But if that looked nice to Tsukiko, then that was alright. There was, admittedly, something cool-looking about Cyberdramon's appearance. "That makes you the only person I know to beat a strong Digimon in a fair fight..." Mao noted, looking up at Pike. At least the moron was sorry for pulling what he did off.
"...Right. Okay. Just don't...do that again. You worried your brother, and you nearly got yourself killed. What would've happened if we didn't step in when we did?" She asked towards Pike, before she took out her D-Tector, and pointed it towards the totem. The totem itself promptly digitized and was scanned.
Another piece for the puzzle. "...I mean, it...did lead to me getting more forms, though at least...And that rush of power was something." Mao noted towards Tsukiko, who was definitely asking about how it felt to turn into a dragon. A strange dragon, but one nonetheless. "How'd it feel to fight a Digimon in single combat? Heck, how did you win?"

A smirk appeared around Tsukiko’s lips just from looking at another display of Mao’s Magnificence. Although quiet, Mao was someone who you could trust to say the hard-to-listen words when they had to be said. And that was simply the kind of friend Tsukiko needed. Pike just nodded at Mao’s words. “I promise I won’t let you down.” This was a thing of honor for him, and he knew this is what he had to do.
Right now, it was time to go back to Goyo’s inn. They had a meal to catch, right? Everyone reincorporated and started making their way through the lonely streets of the lower ends of the Hardware Den. As they did, they saw some Styx patrols approaching the place. Probably someone had called them after such a fuzz being heard underground. Telling them that the Crimson Killer was dead would probably involve having to stay to answer some questions, so the group decided they wouldn’t.
Luckily, they found exactly the digimon who would help them spread the word, hiding behind a wall and spying them.
“Tell everyone the killer terrorizing this town is dead.” Mitsuharu stated, without looking at the Wornmon eye to eye. Tsukiko, instead, took some steps forward and approached the creature, who seemed honestly a bit scared. “And, please, don’t mention us or anything like that, okay? We really would rather remain unnoticed.” The pink haired girl winked at the digimon.
With that, they got moving.
It was just when they were about to enter the inn again (after a long trip back) Tsukiko remembered Mao’s question and tackled it.
“Hmm…” She mused about it, placing her index finger on top of her lip and raising her gaze. “… I think the fact that it was a fair fight was really important.” To be honest, that had determined the whole course of the combat. “If Pike would have used his electric techniques against me I would have been toasted! Literally… But I knew he was going to fight fair since I could tell from the beginning he was a good digimon, right?” Her blue eyes turned towards Pike as she showed him a wide smile.
Pike’s eyes just widened, and everyone discovered Thunderballmon’s could actually blush. “W-What are you asking me those kinds of stuff for!? L-Let’s just go inside!” He opened the door to the inn first. What would they find in there?
Ramma, however, was having trouble to drop the topic.
“I still don’t understand how did you manage to actually hurt him, Kiko. Humans shouldn’t be able to do that.” Said the Mamemon, who apparently had a new way of calling the leader of the clan, considering he was now an Ashikaga too.
Well, that whole topic would probably have to be developed later. After all, Alouette and Goyo had to be waiting for them!

"Yeah, you better not..." Mao mumbled. Pike may not have made the best first impression on her with that stunt, but she was willing to give the ball a chance, at least. The girl picked herself off the ground and followed her friends through the lonely streets.
...Friends. That was a strange thing to be thinking about. Mao waved at the Wormmon when they passed him and told him to spread the news. It was nice that the little guy turned out alright. "Yeah, we're incredibly stealthy. Tsu's actually a ninja." She nodded, sagely.
Speaking of, she finally got to her question! "Mmm...I don't think I'm that good at fighting fair. Then again, I'm pretty stubborn. I had to fight a Gokuwmon as Vemmon and needed to exploit the fact that he was weak to his own attacks just to even damage him...Enough of that, though. I guess it fits that it was a fair fight--that's what duels are, aren't they?"
...Mao proceeded inside after Pike blushed--she didn't know they could do that. Once inside, Alouette was waiting for them, and gave the clan (and Mao) a scrutinizing glance. She was wide awake.
"Well? Did you do it?"

Well, Pike had done something well already. He had told the clan about how the Wornmon was there when he found Red Snatchmon and started fighting him. Otherwise, the group wouldn’t have known.
“Yes. When the enemy is stronger, I couldn’t say we always fight fair. Except when it’s an actual one on one duel. There, we will always fight on the same conditions, regardless of the strength the opponent has.” Tsukiko explained to her best friend ever as they entered the inn. Then, she was met by Alouette’s question.
A sole thumbs-up, accompanied by a wink and a smile. Kissu then showed the plaque. Not only had they found Pike; they had eliminated the assassin and had actually found the second totem and the tablet Goyo needed!
“Well, I’ll be damned.” Goyo leered at the group from above the counter. “You actually did it!”
Around one hour later, the group was having that breakfast Alouette had offered. They were all sitting around one single table. The first floor at the inn was empty, since it was not breakfast or lunchtime, which meant no one was there. Pike apologized to Alouette and Goyo (both for making them worried and for zapping the assistant last night), Tsukiko and Mao told them the whole story about what happened and Kissu finally handled the plaque to the Wanyamon, closing up the deal.
“Amazing…!” His eyes glimmered just by looking at the object. “I will use this information to complement the one we already found. Who knows, it may lead me to the rest of the totems and plaques.” He had to make a call soon. All of his siblings had to know he had found another plaque! Only eight left.
This way, Mao got to keep the two totems. After all, the archeologist only cared about the plaques. Although it was very interesting to know she was actually a worthy recipient of two of the ten totems hidden around the world. The question was obvious: why Mao? Little did the group know right now that they would find their answer eventually. And that answer would take them to an event that would change everyone’s lives forever.
Celebration Breakfast and chatting were over. And the time to say goodbye had come.
“According to that Styx patrol that came by during the afternoon, this Wornmon has confirmed the killer is dead. Since they don't consider this to be a conclusive proof, they opened up one single exit tunnel. But that should be more than enough so you can leave the Hardware Den, Maoru.” Kissu explained, holding Mao’s hand to say goodbye. On top of that hand, Goyo could be found, getting his last round of petting.
“I hope you come back soon so you can pet me more!” Said the Wanyamon, finally jumping off the human's hands and back to Alouette’s. Mitsuharu, Pike, and Ramma waved their goodbyes too.
Lastly, Tsukiko.
“Even though it was a bit chaotic and dramatic… I had a lot of fun.” They had only been together around three days. Why was this so hard?
Probably because all of what they had been through together. Arcaria, fighting Lego, looking for Goyo’s inn, having a small sleepover, finding Pike, and getting the totems.
“We definitely had a lot of adventures for such a few days!” The leader of the Ashikaga showed her a tender smile. “Alouette said that she will install the software so I can open portals with my digivice. I found a new one in Lego’s lab, so I’m probably going to be using that one from now on.” She explained. “Apparently she needs some tools to do this to my digivice, and those will take around a couple of days to arrive now that the tunnel is open. Besides, Pike needs to recover from the wounds Snatchmon left on him. So we will be staying here for some days.”
They had kind of talked about this before, but it was good to sum everything up before parting ways. “I have your contact info, so once we are ready, I’ll let you know. Then, we will meet in Terminus City, to go back to Pike and Ramma’s lab and start helping them recover the Digital Breeder and stopping Zaiden.”
And that was that.
Slowly but wholeheartedly, Tsukiko wrapped her arms around the orange-haired girl. “Take care, okay? If you are free, you can come by and we can have some fun. You’ll probably be able to open portals that take you here or at least near enough, now that the gates are open.”
A sigh escaped Tsukiko. “Take care, Maoru.” At first it was just Ramma, but now that the whole clan called her like that, this was officially Mao's new nickname. At least for what the Ashikagas concerned.
With that, it was time for me and Mao to part ways. Although we knew it was just going to be temporary.
… I didn’t know it back then… and I quite don't get it right now, still. But something huge was about to happen at Terminus. And we were going to be part of that.

"I see...I think I can respect that. Plus, it's still pretty badass that you beat a Digimon that's stronger than you in a one-on-one fight. So...Um. Good job, Tsu-chan." Mao gave a bright smile to her friend as they entered the inn.
Alouette clapped her hands for their guests and gave them a grandiose grin of her own. "I guess dinner's on us, then, isn't it, Yoyo?" After all, they did do what they had asked them to do, plus they brought back the plaque! The reward the group got was simple--the breakfast that they skipped out on thanks to Pike running off.
It was pancakes. It was a lot of pancakes, and eggs. And bacon, too. Where did they even procure half of this stuff? Who knows! They had a fun time eating, but the time to bid farewell had come...
Mao wasn't sure if she could leave, but at the same time, she needed to get home. She didn't know how long these past few days truly were in the real world, and she didn't want to take any chances. "It should be, I hope..." Mao began, before she finished petting Goyo (for now) and let him jump free. "Maybe I will, hm? I know where your inn is, I can drop by at any time now."
...It was saying bye to Tsukiko that really drove how difficult this was home. "Yeah, uh...It really was. Fighting for our lives tends to be that way. I...I had fun too. More fun than I ever had." There was truth to her words. Unexpected as this all was, it was impossible to deny the positive outcome of it all.
In addition, she learned the clan's next bit of plans. But more importantly...She had contact info on her phone now! Finally, a reason to actually use the damn thing. Mao returned the hug given with an even tighter one of her own. Were...those tears forming in her eyes? Uh...No. There was something in them.
Definitely. No. Really.
"Y-Yeah. I'll...I'll stop by soon." Mao nodded, quickly drying her tears before she released Tsukiko. With a nod to the rest of the clan, she turned and got going, walking towards the route to the singular opened tunnel.
Sure, the girl with the alien spirit was alone again, but was she truly alone in the world now?
And would it be forever?
No, no it would not.
