Alright, everything will be perfectly fine, Rebecca... He likes you, and you like him. Everything should be good, right? Right?
That was Rebecca's thought process as she waited outside of the restaurant where she was supposed to be meeting Tadayoshi. Her twin Digimon had convinced her earlier in the day to invite him out for dinner and a movie, and he ended up actually agreeing to go. And to make things worse, being in her White Wolf attire wouldn't work due to the sheer number of people who'd recognize her.
So here was the original Rebecca Story, standing outside the nice restaurant in her nice clothing. She had let her hair down, as opposed to her usual ponytail style. Her loose, light purple dress sparkled lightly, and complimented well with her white dress shoes. Rebecca was also wearing long black silk fingerless gloves that went all the way up to her upper arms. And her makeup job was absolutely perfect.
All that was left to do was wait for Tadayoshi... if he even shows up. If he did, it would hopefully be just those two, as Agumon and Gabumon were left at home with Rebecca's grandmother.

Tadayoshi might have been just as nervous as his date, but his reasons were entirely different. White Wolf! The White Wolf! I can't believe she actually said yes! He almost wanted to jump for joy as he entered the restaurant, but he couldn't shake off the fact that he was definitely dating out of his league and so had to tread lightly. My father will never believe this. Even he has to admit this is worth sneaking out for. Tadayoshi sure was dressed nice for someone who had to sneak out of his home to get where he was going. He went all out with the formality: black dress shoes, black dress slacks, a white suit under a black jacket, and his nicest red tie. "Reservation for two under 'Teppei,'" he informed the maître d, who informed him the other half of the reservation had already arrived. "Oh! White Wolf!"
Yes, Tadayoshi called across the whole restaurant her stage name. Hopefully no one would be able to spot her outside of her disguise, but he sure did a good job undoing some of the work she put into being subtle. He grinned kind of stupidly wide as he took a seat across from Rebecca, then taking a breath to calm himself a bit. It helped, but it didn't calm him completely. "Sorry. Rebecca." Too late. The damage was done. "How are you? I'm glad we're here together." It was at that point he presented Rebecca with an absurdly ornate bouquet of a dozen roses.

Rebecca sat at the table that Tadayoshi had reserved for them, wondering if he was even gonna show up. After all, his image of White Wolf did get shattered when they first met. Going from a confident idol to a nervous teenage girl wasn't exactly... inspiring, so to say.
Any plans of the date going anything close to well absolutely shattered when Tadayoshi actually arrived. Normally, Rebecca would be happy to see that her date actually showed up, and looking really nice to boot. Sadly, he was very dumb and announced her stage name ACROSS THE RESTAURANT. Thankfully all that was received was weird looks from other customers, wondering why some kid just shouted that. But for Rebecca, it was absolutely mortifying, He would have to do a lot to make this up.
Tadayoshi came to sit at the table, and Rebecca did NOT look happy. Not only was her face more red than a Red Delicious apple, but she glared at the male teen with such an intensity that only White Wolf would be able to give. "...just what on earth is your problem?" she asked. The topic of conversation couldn't be avoided.

Tadayoshi was socially acute enough to know that he had gone wrong. He just... didn't know how. He checked his watch. No, that couldn't be it. He was on time. She didn't take the roses, though. That had to mean... "...Maybe you're right. That's a bit much for a first date." Tadayoshi lay the bouquet down on the table between them gently and remorsefully. "They were Delta's idea. Maybe I shouldn't have asked advice from someone who couldn't feel emotions the same way we do, but I was just really nervous... y'know? I really like you, Whi-" Uh-oh. He almost did it again.
This time he figured it out. "...Oh. Oh! Oh, gosh, that's terrible of me." Tadayoshi swallowed and held his head in his hands a moment before making eye contact again. "That name is only for the stage. So is the personality that goes with it. I respect that." Tadayoshi leaned in, then and tried to smile in order to defuse some tension. "That's fine. Because what I really wanted was a date with Rebecca Story. I apologize for suggesting anything else."

"No, that isn't why I'm crossed with you right now," Rebecca stated when Tadayoshi started talking about the flowers. She actually thought they looked really nice and was glad that he had brought them. And THEN he started to get a bit too close for comfort, and almost did the thing that made her angry again. Luckily he had caught himself.
"Yes. Yes it was terrible of you," Rebecca said, "but I know you weren't trying to do it. Just an instinct I guess, right? Just... don't call me that name in public. When we're in private you can call me whatever you want. Also... let's take things SLOW for now. People don't like it when you come off strong like that."
Things might've made Tadayoshi regret his actions and affections immediately, but Rebecca made him feel comfortable by touching his hand and smiling at him. "But don't worry. I still like you."
By this time, the waiter had arrived to take the couples' drink order, which Rebecca decided to just have a glass of green tea. After the waiter had taken their drink orders and left, Rebecca began to start conversation. "So how's your secret life going and all? Digimon are amazing creatures, aren't they?"

Well, at least Tadayoshi correctly diagnosed and repented for the issue. He slowly exhaled out his lips; job well done, date salvaged. Maybe even no harm done if Rebecca could still say out loud she liked him! That reassurance made the boy grin a bit too widely and turn rosy in the cheeks. "Alright. I can do slow. I was just... I was really looking forward to this all week. Might've sabotaged myself mentally. Tsun Tzu said, 'Mastering others is strength. Mastering oneself is true power.' Also, I'm quoting The Art of War on a date, so... new subject? Please?"
One came to him in the form of Rebecca's question. "Oh, well... it's been 'interesting' to say the least. I know I was a scared kid when you met be, but now... we've been putting the old rebels back together and bringing in some new faces. We're a whole army 21 strong now. I guess that's why they gave us all one of these..." Tadayoshi dug into his pocket for a little bit and tried to very discreetly flash an object to Rebecca: a badge given only to agents of AEGIS. "I saved the captain's home. Now he repays me by protecting mine. We do a little mercenary work on the side, but that's a secret from most people." Tadayoshi took another deep breath. "...yeah, it's amazing, alright."

Rebecca raised an eyebrow in interest when Tadayoshi began to quote Tsun Tzu. Rebecca wasn't all too knowledgeable about Chinese history, but she remembered that one small part. "Tsun Tzu, eh? I'm surprised you remember someone like that. Most of the time in school I just feel like it goes in one ear and out the other. He was a general, right?"
When Tadayoshi failed to order anything, the waiter took that as a sign to just bring some water and off he went to get their drinks. Meanwhile, Tadayoshi explained to Rebecca that he had grown since the last time that he met, and the army had grown stronger since then, at twenty-one numbers. As if that wasn't impressive enough, he then showed Rebecca his AEGIS badge. "AEGIS? I've heard of them before. It's a group of Tamers that essentially deal with Digimon problems, right?"
Rebecca smiled. It was one of the very few times she did while she wasn't even in her disguise. Maybe Tadayoshi was helping greatly? "I'm glad you've finally made your way in the world of Digimon, Yoshi. I'm still trying to figure it out myself. My first Digimon experience wasn't that pretty. The first one I ever met was a dinosaur that was made out of Legos. A ToyAgumon, I believe. Anyways, upon seeing him I immediately kicked him in the face out of fear. Pathetic, huh?"
Later the waiter arrived with the drinks and asked if they were ready to order. Rebecca said yes and ordered some omurice. The waiter looked at the young man and waited for him to say his order.

Tadayoshi nodded in order to confirm that, yes, Rebecca was right about the identity of Tsun Tzu, the ancient Chinese general. However, as he'd acknowledged earlier, his own history geeking did not seem very appropriate in this setting, and so he left it at that. It was only as the waiter departed, then, that the nervous young man noticed him and tried to call him back, but he didn't seem to hear Tadayoshi. "We're not all Tamers, technically," Tadayoshi answered with a cheeky grin. Off to one side of the table he reminded Rebecca of this by showing his Loader for a brief moment, screen-down. Why? So that Rebecca wouldn't notice that while Renamon was on a date of her own and most of the remaining members of Silence were hanging around the AEGIS HQ, the captain was there with them.
He wasn't really doing anything of substance, but he insisted on coming. The soldier had become rather protective of his boy by now, and, well... Tadayoshi was anxious. So he consented to the arrangement. The captain wouldn't be far from his charge, and Tadayoshi had a little moral support.
The boy laughed a little at Rebecca's first experience. It was sincere, too. At least he wasn't the only one who had a rather rude awakening when destiny knocked. "I probably would have done the same thing if... you know. He wasn't armed. ToyAgumon must have been a forgiving soul to just let that go!" Fortunately he was a good man and brought back the same glass of water that Tadayoshi would have ordered anyway. After taking a good draught he asked for the special that night and politely sent the man on his way. "But now... I'm someone who matters. Y'know? I just go to school and study at home, but with them I'm a general. I'm a mercenary and and the first line of defense and someone who finally does something meaningful. I'm a totally different person when the team's around." He pursed his lips thoughtfully. "I know you know what it feels like to be two people at different times. I do, too."

"Of course I know that," Rebecca said, responding to Tadayoshi's claim that they weren't all Tamers, "I know about Spirit Users and Xros Generals, it's just easier to refer to everyone as Tamers. What other word should I use? 'Digi-Destined' or something like that?" That's when Rebecca noticed Tadayoshi take out his Xros Loader briefly.
And she did not know how to react to that. "You brought him with you?" she asked, neither happy nor upset. "I thought it was just going to be the two of us. I even left Agumon and Gabumon home with my grandma. Like, what the heck?" Great, now if this date goes anywhere Commandramon will have a front-row seat for all of it. Just perfect. "...hello, Commandramon," she eventually said, just so she wasn't too rude to him.
Letting it slide (for now at least,) the conversation continued. "Yeah, he was. At the time I freaked out because it was a walking pile of lego, but looking back he was nothing more than a little cupcake of a Digimon. I met Agumon and Gabumon shortly after, who had been living in the woods like wild Digimon their whole lives. They knew nothing about the city, or technology. I wonder what would've happened if I never showed up..."
After placing her order to the waiter before he walked off, Rebecca listened to Tadayoshi more as he explained how he was more than just a student now. He was a general of an entire army, someone that people could depend on. He seemed... happy. "I'm glad for you, Tadayoshi. I really am. To be honest, I just feel empty inside more than anything, especially when I'm just... me. White Wolf is nothing more than an act. I'd give anything to actually feel like her for once, instead of just faking it. Life... life hasn't been so kind to me, you know."

Tadayoshi was silent when Rebecca asked about another general term for humans with digimon, he found himself stumped. The truth was he had himself tried to think of such a catch-all umbrella term but had come up empty. He decided not to tell Rebecca that he thought her idea was kind of silly.
Tadayoshi originally tried to deny that Commandramon was in the Xros Loader. "Wh-what are you talking about? He's not here! He's at AEGIS HQ with the rest." But that was a hasty lie whose hole he recognized for himself after telling it: there was no reason for him to have the loader and no digimon. So he went and admitted the truth. "It's not what you think," he started with because it actually was true. He was starting to keep his voice down. "You should know. Commandramon and I, we don't really do much apart anymore. He's beome my bodyguard of sorts, and the captain is nothing if not devoted to his duty. That's the only reason he's here." As for the lizard himself, he was glad for the greeting but stayed quiet, knowing he was still a secret from his surroundings.
Interesting as Rebecca's first meeting was, Tadayoshi thought it was very odd for her to claim life wasn't good for her. He voiced those thoughts, "How can you say life hasn't been good to you?" while trying to be sensitively inquisitive, not accusatory and pushy. Still, "You're... famous. An idol, and you're only my age! I'm just... nobody. A good student with a strict father like everyone else in this city. I don't matter unless my Loader is in my hand." It seemed Tadayoshi had let slip another reason he brought the loader that even he didn't consciously think about. "You may not like it, but at least you get to matter all the time. I kind of envy that."

Rebecca was not buying it. "Why would you bring your Xros Loader without any Digimon?" she asked, crossing her arms. "Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having it in the first place?" She listened to Tadayoshi when he explained that Commandramon was like his bodyguard now, always by his side these days. Rebecca still thought it was lame to bring him on a DATE, though. "Okay, fine... I guess having it be just us was too much to ask for."
Tadayoshi then began asking why Rebecca thought life wasn't good for her, as she was the famous idol, White Wolf, who could apparently do anything and make whatever she touched turn to gold. She scoffed at that kind of attitude. "Well being famous isn't everything, you know. When I was eleven, something happened. I don't know what caused it, but something exploded my family's apartment building. My brother and I were the sole survivors of the blast. My parents were killed in that explosion, and my best friend... I abandoned her out of fear. I couldn't live with that kind of heartbreak anymore. So, I shut myself away from everyone. Didn't talk to anyone but my brother and grandma for six years before one day I was suddenly transported to the Digital World and met Agumon and Gabumon. My whole life is an act, Tadayoshi. I'm... I'm sorry if I'm not what you expected."

Tadayoshi had already made a mental note to apologize for bringing his Loader, but it turned out that was far from his biggest mistake over the course of the date or even his biggest mistake over the past ten seconds. Not only had he inadvertently accused her of being spoiled, but he had clumsily stepped on a huge conversational landmine by getting her to talk about her violently killed family. Was it even possible to salvage a date after that?
Tadaoshi just froze. He looked down. He exhaled softly. Possible or no, the boy at least had to try to come back from a mistake that major. The only problem was he just couldn't seem to pick a course of action. Was it rude to divert to a new topic? Was it ruder to stay on it? Would an apology mean anything or just ring hollow? Would it be better to kick the ball into Rebecca's court, let her decide where to go from there? What if she was just done with him then? Heck, how did it even get here? Tadayoshi was trying his best to be inquisitive, not insensitive. Rebecca, however, obviously took offense.
The General never felt so helpless. He stayed silent so long that at the end staying silent became his best play for no other reason that the time for a tactful response had passed. So the boy just hung his head and waited for Rebecca's judgement.

"Sorry, sorry... I got a little bit too sad there," Rebecca immediately apologized, blushing as she looked away from Tadayoshi. "You're the first person I ever told this story to aside from my Digimon. It's... really nice, just letting it all go. I'm sorry that I'm not the pretty, perfect girl you were expecting. But I do hope that you will at least give me a chance."
That was when the waiter returned with their food. Rebecca thanked him as he walked off, and began to dig into her omurice. It was one of her favorite dishes, so she was glad that they served it here. Rebecca looked back at Tadayoshi. "So, what are you into, Yoshi? Movies? Games? Sports? One of my favorite movies probably has to be Ringu, surprisingly. I just have a thing for horror, since it's the most creative genre of movie."

When Tadayoshi next raised his head, he was surprised to hear Rebecca taking responsibility for this social occasions macabre turn. Really, he was surprised to hear her voice at all as he suspected she might just rise and leave, an action he would have fully understood. But she didn't. Was she that modest? Of course, the boy reasoned, I need to try harder to remember the stage persona isn't here. I'm eating with a beautiful, sensitive, regular girl... Of course, Tadayoshi knew there had to be one more reason that Rebecca was still here with him, or so he at least suspected. He thought that the only reason she might so easily forgive him reminding her that great trauma had to mean, ...who really likes me.
More than forgiveness, she was oddly happy to talk about it after a moment to recover. The significance of that unique trust was not lost on him; he knew what it meant to have a level of confidence on par with one's digimon partner. He acknowledged that with, "I'm honored you feel comfortable telling me about this. I'm sorry that happened to you, and I'm sorry I brought up." There were two things that helped dig the date out of the hole it seemed to be diving into, at least. One: the food. It smelled as wonderful as it tasted, and it tasted wonderful. It was hard to be mad or sad with that sort of fine cuisine before him. Maybe it was a splurge, but if tonight went well it was worth it.
The other factor was Rebecca's wise suggestion to step back, take a breath, and do what people are supposed to do on dates: get to know each other. "Well... father does not permit much recreation. I've always wanted to try video games but haven't been allowed. Sports..." Tadayoshi looked down at his own small frame and chuckled at it. "...I think not. I've only ever seen movies in class sometimes. I'm sorry. But my favorite thing is..." Tadayoshi needed some time to think. "Besides my job with AEGIS, strategy games - not the video kind, of course. I also love to read, and sometimes when neither school nor AEGIS keep me busy I volunteer somewhere. There's that shelter down the block or the food bank near school, for instance, but it doesn't really matter what. I think it just feels good to do good for people."

Rebecca couldn't help but smile when Tadayoshi eventually said that he was honored to be able to learn of her past. It felt so good for her to finally tell someone, and she was glad that he was so understanding. She finally had someone that she could properly talk to, and be who she really is around. "Thanks, Tadayoshi. I feel a lot better now."
The meal truly was delicious, if a little bit expensive. Rebecca definitely had the money to pay for this high-end restaurant's meal, but it was still a lot for something like omurice and green tea. Still, she couldn't deny that it was truly high-end dining that she was experiencing right now. "You wanna know what I noticed about this food? The price. This omurice alone costs 2,000 Yen! And the green tea is 1000 Yen!"
Rebecca wasn't exactly sure what Tadayoshi's answer would be to her question, but she never would've expected what he said. "Father does not permit much recreation"? Who talks like that? "Sorry, but the way you said that worries me a little bit," Rebecca admitted. Tadayoshi would then go on about wanting to try video games and not being able to, blaming his body for not being able to try sports... it was kind of sad. "Your father doesn't sound like a very good man, from what you told me."
Oh wow, so Tadayoshi likes to help people. Rebecca thought that it was really admirable, the way he spends his time volunteering around Shibuya. "The world could use more people like you, Yoshi. I'm nothing more than an idol, can't really help others the way you do. I spend my free time as White Wolf, either practicing, going to concerts, or meeting people and all that stuff. It's really nice how they all look happy to see me, and that's the reason I do what I do."
