Here we go again… Adrian bitterly thought as his family’s red car the moving van pulled up in front of the Boriker family’s new house on a Saturday afternoon. The TENTH new house that the family has ever had. After all the moves and all the financial troubles that his parents have had, that has made the seventeen-year-old Adrian Boriker pretty bitter at life these days. The happy, bubbly teen that he used to be was nowhere to be seen, and was now more like every other life-hating teen.
“Here we are, Adrian,” Adrian’s mother Maaya said to him from the driver’s seat as the car pulled up to the house. “We’re right in one of the nicer neighborhoods of Shibuya. Aren’t you excited?”
“Yeah, sure, totally excited to live here for five months before something happens and we have to move yet again,” he sarcastically replied. This did not make his father Rokuro happy, as was shown when he looked back at Adrian from the passenger’s seat.
“Adrian, you shut your mouth,” Rokuro angrily told him, “you have no idea how hard it was for us to get this house, so you’re going to live here and you’re going to like it!”
“What’s the point? This is the tenth house we’ve ever had in a decade, one house per year! Why would this one be any different, huh? Tell me!” No response… “That’s what I thought.”
Adrian then got out of the car, slamming the car door and walking up to the new house. It looked fairly nice, and it was at least two stories. He sighed and walked through the front door of the building. As his parents and the moving company helped bring in their stuff into the house, Adrian just brought in his own stuff and decided to have a tour of the place. The living room, dining room, kitchen, all standard stuff. He knew that it wouldn’t be long before they eventually moved again, so he made note to not get too attached to this house. He made that mistake nine times before already, and it just led to more pain. Eventually Adrian decided to check out the bedrooms, and choose which one he’d be taking. Upon going upstairs and walking into one of the bedrooms, he noticed something… very off.
...why is there a flat-screen TV in this room?
No joke, there was a small flat screen TV right in the middle of the room, not plugged in or anything. Obviously this made Adrian very confused. Did the previous owners of this place just leave it here or something? That had to be it, TVs don’t just appear for no reason. Maybe he could use this as an upgrade from his previous TV?
“Hey, Dad?” Adrian called out downstairs. No response. Just as soon as Adrian was about to leave the bedroom to go get him, the TV suddenly turned on with a huge flash of light, startling Adrian greatly.
Wait… the TV isn’t even plugged in!
“HOLY SHIT,” Adrian unintentionally yelled out of shock and fear. The TV not only turned on all by itself, but it’s not even plugged into a power outlet! Needless to say, Adrian was definitely freaked out. He stumbled backwards, accidentally closing the door behind him. What the hell is happening?! WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!
“MOM! DAD!” Adrian yelled as loud as he could. Sadly, they still couldn’t hear him from downstairs, and Adrian was too petrified to even open the door, much less leave the room. Something supernatural was happening right in front of his eyes, and he had no idea what he was supposed to do! Eventually the TV turned itself off, relieving Adrian to no end but still making him a bit freaked out especially due to the TV-related nightmares he had as a child.
Upon closer inspection, he noticed an odd red device sitting right in front of the television. Hesitantly, he picked up the device which was red, silver and black. It looked like an old walkie-talkie, with a short antenna stub, a couple of buttons and a small screen. A small screen that repeatedly began to flicker before a bright red light shot out of it.
“AH!” Adrian yelled, completely thrown off by what had just happened. The light that had shot out of the device had landed right in front of Adrian’s feet, and the human watched in a mixture of horror and confusion as the light began to form into something physical. Eventually, standing in front of Adrian was a three-foot-tall creature that seemed to resemble a dragon. It had red skin, white forearms, legs, and belly, and green headphones. The creature opened up his bright green eyes and stared right at a petrified Adrian, before immediately smiling.
“Hey there, kid,” the creature said happily, “you must be my Tamer! Congratulations! I am the one and only Shoutmon. And you are…?”
“Uhhhhhhhhhh…” Adrian’s face was completely blank as his brain hurryingly tried to process exactly what he was saying.
“Huh, funny name, ‘Uhhhhhhhhhh’. Is there something else I can call you, because that name is just too weird.”
“Wait, what?” Adrian finally regained the ability to speak. “...my name’s Adrian. Um… sorry if I sound rude, but… what are you?”
“Oh yeah, humans don’t really know about it all yet, do you guys? Well like I said, my name is Shoutmon and I am a Digimon, which of course is short for ‘digital monster’, and we all come from another world known as the Digital World!”
“Digital monster… Digital World… I must’ve passed out somewhere or something. You’re just a part of my dream, right?”
“Nope, you’re not dreaming! I’m as real as day, right in front of ya!” Shoutmon then summoned what seemed to be a microphone, spinning it around in circles before doing a pose with it, seemingly trying to show off, “and don’t you forget it.”
Adrian nodded, as if he was understanding… before immediately rushing out of the room and slamming the door behind him, sitting down with his back against the door as well. Okay, Adrian, this isn’t happening, there is no… digital monster inside that bedroom. You’re only dreaming; soon you’ll wake up and everything will be back to normal. Just to prove to himself that he was dreaming, Adrian slapped himself in the face. And immediately regretted it.
“YOWCH! That was a bad idea…”
“Can you open the door already, please?” Adrian heard Shoutmon ask from the other side, his eyes widening. “I promise I’m not going to hurt you. In fact, I’m the opposite. You were chosen to be my friend and partner, Adrian. Just hear out what I have to say, okay?”
After listening to Shoutmon speak, Adrian didn’t have any real idea what to do. His perception of the world shattered in only a few minutes, and he wasn’t even sure if he was sane anymore.
I’m going to regret this at some point, aren’t I?
Letting out a big sigh, Adrian caved in. He stood up and opened the door, and of course Shoutmon was still there standing, eager to tell his tale to Adrian. “You have five minutes.”
