"I just wanted to spend time with you all... why does it have to be this hard...?"
K let out a small sob and pushed her head against him. Her arms shakily gripping at her husband. There were so many things that she wanted to do, so many things that she promised to do. If she was even lucky to do any of them considering the weakness that she had following that fight.
Holly found herself biting on the end of her pencil, the wood cracking lightly as she could hear her mother and father easily. Her head turned slightly as her sister came over to her. The meicrackmon's tail flitted one way to the next as she continued to work on the 'thing' that she thought would help.
It was a long shot but maybe if da's magical stuff helped soothe her this would too. But it was a short term fix and she didn't even know magic super well so a lot of it was just theory ontop of theory.
"Ma's a good person, she's done a lot... always has and will be a happy person. She doesn't get that anymore... Maybe this fishing trip was a bad idea considering everything. I'd settle for a family movie night at this point, I don't think we should go out too much. Well. Ma...."
Holly blinked a few times and turned her head down to her sister, finding herself frowning lightly. She'd stopp down and reach to give her big sis a big ol hug. She didn't really know what to do about this either, her ma was sad, her da was sad, her big sis was sad. And there was nothing that she could really do to stop any of it, she could feel herself still be sad. She was still reeling from this entire thing and she'd bite her lower lip.
"We gotta help her somehow Sis..."

"M-maybe a movie night would be nice, yeah..."
... Fuck. Just what was Syre really supposed to say? She was worried. Worried about mom and dad, about to lose each-other in the most tragic way she could imagine. Worried about Holly, who never really dealt with this sort of thing very well - and she was worried about herself, not finding the words to try and help her younger sister! Syre grit her teeth, still not finding those words come to her.
Why did she even start this conversation? She gave a blink as she was plucked up, and after a moment, returned Holly's hug, closing her eyes as she grit her teeth. The MeiCrackmon mentioned something about helping mom - to which Syre gave a short nod - but after a moment, the cat just broke right on down.
"Holly. I'm scared." Her voice trembled, keeping it down so as not to concern mom or dad more than they already were. "She's always been upbeat, keeping us together, making us smile when we felt like we couldn't. I thought everything might be alright during the pictures, but seeing her now..."
... Damn it. "I don't want to lose her."

"There's a lot of movies that I know they probably want to watch. It'll be easier on ma too."
Holly's eyes flicked back to her parents, who were still at the front of the ship. They needed their time together, more than ever. They had been there the entire life of the cat and she knew how much it must of meant to them that she was going to die. It hurt to think about that, she could feel her cheeks starting to get wet. Was she crying? Holly brought up a hand to brush away some of her tears and let out a little tch as she found that she was. Her higher forms always felt more emotional for some reason, especially after Guru had helped her.
"I'm scared too Syre..."
Holly murmered softly and flicked her ears. Her mother was always upbeat, always making sure to have that smile. But it was never forced, it never felt like this. She'd close her eyes and sigh softly.
"The pictures were great, it was nice to know we'll have something for when she's gone.... so that..."
Holly buried her head against her sisters and let out a small somewhat defeated sob. There wasn't anything they could do. They were going to lose their mother and that was that. All they could do was make sure that she didn't suffer.
"I don't either... but... it's something we're... we're gonna have to face Sis."
Holly sighed softly and scrunched her eyes shut, mumbling a little bit near the end. She felt a small series of hiccups work their way through her and it wasn't until she started to actually hiccup that she had to set her sister down to try to manage it.
"Hic- Gosh... Hic- Darn... Hic- It! Hic! Hic! Hic!"
Holly thumped herself on the chest but that only seemed to make the hiccuping worse. She'd grumble a little bit and sit down on the deck rubbing her neck a little bit.
"Hic! Mr- Hic! Driver- Hic! Can we- Hic! Go back- Hic! to sho- HIC!"

It was something that they were going to have to face.
It was the blunt, honest truth - and it was enough to bring tears to Holly's eyes. The younger sister was upset but trying to comfort the older one, and it was enough to further frustrate Syre, gritting her teeth as she clenched her eyes shut. It seemed that nothing was going to push them past this stalemate...
... But then something did break it, quite unexpectedly. Holly started to hiccup, probably from choking back her tears, it quickly developing into a distracting and heavy case. Syre backed up, seeing Holly call for the captain - and it was actually enough to get Mikemon's attention! Sure, the MeiCrackmon wasn't hurt, but she was definitely uncomfortable. With a small pat on K's back, he gave a slow nod to the fox, before heading back to the middle of the ship.
"Um, you sure you want to-"
"Yeah, yeah, pull us on back. Careful there, Holly." He'd direct her to sit down, away from the railing of the ship, and gave her a slow nod. "Just evolve downward, if you can. Changing your data structure will free your airway right on up!"

Holly huffed in irritation as her hiccuping continued and rubbed the bridge of her nose in frustration. She didn't usually get the hiccups but her life for the msot part had been nothing but happy. There wasn't a lot of sadness to go around in there other than a few extreme cases. Holly wanted to talk but the hiccuping continued to interrupt her which only increased her frustration.
She'd shoot a somewhat sour look down at herself likely to the amusement of others if this wasn't so serious. At the front K blinked slowly at hearing her husband speak to the driver, looking around with a soft sigh before just simply taking a seat near the front, leaning over the side to let herself think. It was a dreary sort of thought process but one that she needed to have.
Holly huffed a bit more and then take a seat away from the railing. A moment or two later that light of digivolution took over and the little meicoomon replaced that of the meicrackmon. The hiccuping slowed and then broke completely and the little cat buried her head in her own fluff with a frustrated grumble.
"T-tch... I've never had that happen before..."
The little sketches and notes that she had scrawled were left forgotten by the railing, propped up against the side of the ship. A lot of question marks but there were quitea few of underlined segments and larger portions surrounding a very familiar core structuring...

"Seriously? Never had the hiccups?"
At that, Mikemon even cracked a grin - before spying something of Holly's hanging right on the ship's railing. The poor girl must have just dropped it when the little hiccup spree started, so he would pick it right off - before it would tip off the side and fall into the water - and tuck it under his arm, before giving a pat on Holly's back. "I'll get you a seltzer or something when we get back to the Library, alright?" The doctor gave a nod, giving Holly a small pat on her head...
... As Syre slipped to the front of the boat, and sat right next to her mom on her good side, leaning gently against her hip. "Heh. Leave it to Holly, I guess." She teased her sister, but more importantly, just spent a few precious minutes with her mother. Well, that trip could have gone better. With the fishing unfortunately cut short, it wouldn't take long for the lot of them to make their way back to the library - though they did get to keep the bass, Syre hefting a bag of ice containing a fish larger than herself through the portal, as Holly carried in the still-boxed lunches! Mikemon and K would bring up the rear, the cat carefully sitting K down in their living area.
Now that they had time to breathe, the cat would give a smile.
"Alright, I'm going to set up a sling and get some stuff to make that arm feel better. You want anything else?" Water, juice, a snack? Really, Mikemon was just making sure that K was comfortable.
But if Holly wanted to put her idea forward...

"No! I never have, I honestly was confused!"
Holly let out a soft little huff and then stiffened lightly at seeing her da pick up her notepad. She'd flatten her ears out as her back and head was patted before smiling up at her da. Some seltzer would probably help and the young mon's eyes drifted down to her notes that her father held. Magic wasn't her forte nor was the mystical healing stuff but if she could get her form to work properly just maybe she'd be able to figure out something there...
Meanwhile up at the front K stared blissfully out over the water perking up a bit when she felt her daughter lean against her good hip. The renamon would reach down to rub around the blackgatomon's shoulders before giving them a one armed hug.
"She's good at that sort of thing isn't she? Heh. I'm glad that I got to spend the time I did with you and your sister Syre. You've made me so proud you know that?"
A small smile and the renamon leaned down to give her eldest a kiss on the top of the head. Rather happy that she got any time to spend with her family. She remember the first time that she had met syre, it was still burned brightly in her mind.
Even if the trip could of gone better holly didn't seem to mind too much, somewhat happy with the fact that they had caught even one bass. She'd teeter a bit carrying all the lunches, huffing softly. It was the closest thing to bento that the family would get from their mother as she was. Holly's ears flicked as she heard her da speak. Stopping short the meicoomon would set down the boxed lunches on another bench before slowly approaching her parents.
"Some water would be nice... once we've got things settled I'll have my boxed-... Holly?"
Holly was standing just a few feet from the both of them, paws clasped around one another and her eyes firmly locked on her notes.
"I think I have a way to circumvent the pain and injuries ma is currently experiencing. Judging from what I was able to remember from her core stuff when you shared it with me and syre well... I got to thinking some applications of larger scaled magic might do the trick. Mega or greater ought to do and it'll only take an hour or two in practical sense. And... after the surgery it'll make it a little less painful at the very least? A lot of it's theory based but I think if I use Jade, My magic stuff from my other mega and your powers Da we could make a really good dent in this."

"Heh... I know, mom. And I'm proud of you, too."
Syre gave a smile, nuzzling briefly against the Renamon. She was a late addition to the cat's life, but she grew just as fond of her all the same. And for the rest of the trip, she'd gently lean into her mother's side. ... But for Holly, well, her addition was more practical. "Just a water? Alright, I'll be right back - hm?"
Mikemon blinked, looking over as Holly stood there, the Meicoomon clearly having something to say, an idea in her head. At this point, Holly and Syre were young adults, and Mikemon would calmly listen to the idea of the upcoming scholar. More powerful healing, a procedure taking an hour or more, involving her jade?
The doctor would blink - before turning to face the Renamon. "K, you don't mind, right? This is going to be Holly's field of study, so I do want her to learn about this sort of stuff. Your arm, at least, will be a good point of study for her." Presuming the fox would go along with it, Mikemon would pick up his own notepad - and start doing an inner sketch of K's arm, down to the bone and muscle structure.
"See, Holly - when I initially healed your mom, I made it so that her arm would heal over several weeks, instead of just instantly trying to fix it right then and there. Why do you think I did it that way?"

"I'm glad that you are, everything I do I do it for you all you know that right?"
Of course syre knew that, she was after all K's whole world when you burned everything else away. Even if she hadn't been there the whole time or had been there for her birth, she was there when it counted right? Even further still she made sure to be there as much as she could...
Holly buried her face in the lower portion of her fluff, flicking her ears a little bit as her da spoke to her ma still. Noting that his youngest was standing right there having something to say. She didn't really feel like she was a young adult yet, she felt like she was a child. She didn't feel she was ready for a lot of stuff still but that didn't seem to matter much.
K blinked a few times and slowly nodded in confirmation that she didn't really mind. She'd rub at her arm cautiously; unsure of what to make of her youngest daughter at the moment. She was ussually a little less forward when it came to her studies.
"I don't mind, go rihgt ahead dear."
Holly leaned to look at the sketch, staring at the bone and muscle structure. Her own notes sprung into her mind and she'd think to herself as her da asked her his question. The fact of the matter was that slowly healing it was obviously better. Never intended for a quick fix and would allow for long term use.
"Because you didn't know she had such a short time, healing causes stuff to shift in one or more structures? I think it'd be the muscles or maybe the joints that would be more the issue."
The meicoomon reached forward to sort of tap at the drawing, raising a small brow.
"But the problem with this is that it's short term we're looking at and the comfort of the person rather than the over all longevity. So something powerful to 'rush' or 'purge' to a certain point would be necessary right?"

"Well, that's definitely one way to look at it. Realistically, we only perform emergency, high-caliber heals like this directly on the battlefield. Otherwise, ethically, we use the longer-term methods."
And, indeed, Holly had a decent point. K was a patient in hospice, meaning these sort of ethical points didn't have any merit. If K were to suddenly break her leg, for example, Mikemon would undoubtedly use Holly's method to put it right back in place, and she'd be no worse for wear. "Your reasoning is sound, yes. Now, I want you to be very careful, hun - but carefully run your hands against your mother's upper arm. First her good arm, then the hurt one."
Why did he ask her to do this? He would look on, and if Holly would do as asked, she'd feel it: the normal arm, with a nice, smooth muscle and structure - and the 'damaged' one, the one that had recently been healed. Underneath the fur, the muscle was abrasive, and more importantly, slightly swollen, making it feel a bit rough to the touch. That swelling, that abrasiveness, was K's arm actively trying to heal itself.
Mikemon wanted to see where Holly's critical thinking would go from here.

Holly frowned a little bit as her da explained that emergency high caliber heals like this on the battlefield. This wasn't so much a high caliber heal as it was an absolute restoration that she was... oh wait no that was pretty much the same thing. She'd gite the edge of her lower lip, lean a bit and if allowed would start furiously scribbling away, adding at her notes and changing the spectrum of her drawing. Her ears flicking and she'd pause when her da spoke a second time.
Her reasoning was sound but he wanted her to run her hands along her ma's upper arm? Both of them? First the good and then the bad? Holly moved over to her mother, K giving a weak smile before the meicoomon started. The normal arm gave her the sense of smoothness and structure. The damage one of course making K wince a little bit in pain as the pressure the meicoomon was putting on her was just a bit more than her father as the meicoo wasn't sure how deep she was looking for. Rough, swollen and abrasive. Holly paused and pulled back, putting a paw up to her mouth thoughtfully.
Then it struck her, she'd go to her note pad again [with permission] and start scribbling away. What they weren't looking for was a way that would force her body to heal completely in one go but a way that would speed up the process rather. Something using the natural process and aid that process.
"If the swelling and the abrasiveness is the problem what we should be using is something to supplement rather than overwhelm. My last one was one that would provide a simple state while this one should use the bodies own memory of how was to how is. So in base a sort of regeneration rather than a heal. It'd take a little longer, maybe three hours instead of one or two but in the short term it'd be much better for her. If not, we can do short term healing bursts at important locations and junctions in her cores structure to further supplement and combat the wisemon interference. It won't buy her time but it'll provide the energy her body needs to work at it's normal pacing rather than the reduced one."
Holly drew in a long breath and then started to speak again.
"and if we use this this also means that the surgery at the end of the week will go a little smoother as the body will also have a fine line between where the wisemon data starts and ma's data starts. A clearer one that the one she has. I don't know exactly how it looks in there but my thought is if it's a blackened core we can focus on the parts that aren't black or in locations where the healing potency can seep into. Such as the cracks or any 'data spikes' that we can see."
Holly held up her sketched out suggestion, some strange symbols, ones that mikemon would recognize as being far outside of holly's own experience and ones that didn't seem to be from herself. Just where had she picked these up from? Additionally there were some crazy calculations and other things that just didn't make sense but in the end the result seemed to be the same. There were a few numbers off to one side that seemed to indicate coding and taking in account K's core was a vaccine... Well holly seemed to think that if she took some of her own data, adding it into the meicrackmon segment would also help as holly's data came from there.

Ah, this was the Holly that Mikemon knew. Curious, forward-pushing, and determined even when faced with new information - but also a bit reckless in her pursuit of the answer. She incorrectly identified the abrasiveness itself as part of the injury, instead thinking that it would just take more time and more focus to heal.
"You're skipping a step, Holly." Mikemon gave a patient smile, at least appreciating his daughter's enthusiasm. "You haven't considered why that abrasion is there in the first place. The swelling is, at least in part, the body's natural effort to try and heal its own damage. Its not 'broken', its not doing anything outside of what its supposed to. But applying more healing will only increase the swelling - and theoretically push it past where it would actually be helpful for her."
He took Holly's sketch, starting to look over the work that she's drawn up. "What K needs is anti-inflammatory medication. As for your sketches..." Mikemon tilted his head, "... your idea isn't bad, but any alteration to the core is an incredibly dangerous endeavor. Her core is virulent, after all - the last thing we want is for any of the foul core data to latch onto my data structure - or, much worse, yours."
Still, these were good notes! He set them off to the side for a minute, and returned Holly's attention to his own sketch. "But don't worry, it doesn't mean we don't have a plan - and it doesn't mean our healing magic's going to do nothing! Most of the swelling and nerve damage is near her shoulder. We'll set her arm into a sling to relieve it from the 'hanging' weight, and apply an ice pack right at the back of the shoulder. If we reduce the swelling by about half, and then work to apply a proper heal in the area... well, she'll be stiff, but she'll be able to use the arm at a basic level."
It sounded like a compromise, but it was really a good step forward! "Thanks for being patient with us, K. Holly's got good basics on this stuff already."

Holly saw that smile and immediately knew that she got something incorrect. She'd bite her lip lightly and simply nod as he started to explain. She had missed the fact that abrasion wasn't actually part of the source but the fact that it instead was the bodies reaction to the wound itself, it should be left alone and do it's own work for the most part. Theoretically if they applied healing that it'd only cause it to be more problematic. Not everything could be solve by simple healing stuff. She didn't have to worry about it as much as her body naturally regenerated, making most physical wounds seem trivial to her. It made using herself as a tester somewhat moot.
"Hmm I see what you mean, I suppose some standard anti-inflammatory medication is what she'd need..."
Holly blinked as he addressed the fact that her idea wasn't bad but the practice itself was incredibly dangerous. She furrowed her brow a bit and put her paw to her lips. Why would that be the case? If her core was virulent a naturally... Oh right ma's core was a vaccine type and it was getting overwhelmed by the foul data.
"A sling, some healing and an ice pack? That seems so little honestly but... that makes sense."
Holly let out a soft sigh and simply shook her head. She didn't know everything and there was a lot she still needed to learn, address and overcome. Her attention switched from her da to her ma and it wasn't too long before she gave each of them a hug before scampering off. K watched her youngest go and let out a soft sigh.
"No problem dear... She's as bright as she ever was. I am curious what she meant by her other mega though? She's already at that point where she can attain mega form? When did this happen?"

Well, maybe not 'standard' anti-inflammatory medication, but Mikemon did nod in acknowledgement of Holly's newfound understanding. And yes, the medicine did seem basic, but there was a careful nuance to it.
Returning Holly's hug, Mikemon went on to reassure her daughter. "Go eat your lunch, you'll do better on a full stomach. I'm going to need you when its time to use your heal, alright?"
The cat gave a grin, looking on as Holly ran off, before returning his attention to K. "Oh - oh, right. She, um... kind of just 'became' mega when she was working with her jade orb project. Though if she's saying she has two... wow she can be a handful." But a good handful! "Though before we really get into it, maybe we should eat." The next bit would more or less go as expected. At some point, everyone got their boxed lunch, Mikemon and K having a quick bite to eat before they got down to work.
A sling. Both a pill and an injection into the muscles near her shoulder, and a heavy ice pack wrapped around the back of K's shoulder with a thick cloth. It was uncomfortable for the moment, yes, but the doctor was trying to expedite the Renamon's healing as much as possible, without doing undue damage to that arm.
"Gotta say, Holly'll make a great researcher. But she needs to learn how to hold back a bit before taking her hand as an acting doctor..." Mikemon smiled, letting out a small, tired sigh. "You can't fix everything, but darn it, Holly'd probably try anyway..."

Holly hummed thoughtfully and dipped her head in a nod as her da told her that she'd likely do better on a full stomach. She'd bound away with a wry grin, mulling to herself about some new stuff. Left still were the notes that she had scribbled; the sigils she had drawn and some stuff that still wouldn't make sense.
"...She just... became mega. Like. It just happened? How on earth..."
K blinked a bit and rubbed her neck uncertain of how to take this whole thing of holly being capable of the same level syre had achieved during her trial which felt like ages ago. The whole jade orb project had come and gone, seemingly out of no where. Those orbs should be following her around all the time right?
"Sounds like a good idea... lets go then eheh..."
K was grateful to have her own lunch, though with some difficulty on her part as her hand occasionally either seized up or didn't grip as strongly. Once the pills and injection occured however she could feel the pain and her muscles sort of stop being so bloody tense. The heavy ice pack and sling were sort of eyeballed, the former earning a chuckle. If it had been a usual one it likely wouldn't of done anything! Seeing as her fur was so damn thick.
"I don't think she knows the term restraint quite yet dear, it'll be up to you to teach her that. I'd rather her not learn the hard way."
K leaned lightly against mikemon, seeming absolutely exhausted as the day had taken quite a bit out of her already. Though she wasn't in any real danger of falling asleep, she had to admit her husband was comfy.
"It's charming really, I feel left to her own devices she could eventually get to the point of fixing everything. But I doubt she'd be the same as she started. Some sort of mad doctor bent on saving the world or something."
K let out a small snicker and painted quite the picture of holly wearing a labcoat with some out of place eye equipment. She'd rub her face softly and just sigh afterwards.
"...Mmm... from what I remember the kids wanted to do a movie right? Or do you want to talk more about earlier?"
