The Call to Adventure, Meeting the Mentor (Arakan/Ask)

Arakan's confirmation would prompt a sigh of relief in the Swanmon. "Oh, thank Yggdrassil... We've been unable to figure anything out - the kids are convinced something is there no matter how we reassure them, and we can't seem to find anything about the tree that'd be spooking them... It makes playtime very much a hassle, when the kids are too scared to go near the toys or equipment at this side of the playground." She'd murmur as she continued to clean the playground equipment - "Hopefully we can figure this out before long..."
In sniffing around the tree though, would come a multitude of scents. The scents of presumably the resident digmon that would linger around the tree, the floral smell of the flowers above, the musty grassy scent of the earth below... Nothing stood out as anything haunted or ghostlike about the smells, or the tree - and Charles, who was walking around the circumference of the tree, held the same opinion; he wasn't seeing anything unusual about the tree, at least at a glance. As far as he could tell, this was just an old fruit tree of some sort, that - judging by the flowers - was in blooming season. Give it a few weeks, and this tree would probably start bearing some sort of fruit that the kids could eat - assuming that whatever was scaring them wouldn't scare them then.
At Arakan's question though, the Swanmon would glance in their direction, and think it over some. "Ah, well... It seems that the kids say it's either one of two things, or both." She'd begin. "Some say that it's a little Wanyamon that's hiding around here, others say it's a Rookie - likely a Gaomon. Either way, they both describe similar... odd details; that it looks like a light yellow, and is all wispy and smoky - as though not solid." The Swanmon would sigh a little, before offering Arakan a sheepish smile. "I'm... sorry if I'm not much help. Watch this just be the children having an overactive imagination, or something..."
Charles though, would shake his head, offering the Swanmon a warm smile. "It's alright. This certainly sounds like a bizarre occurrence - and definitely not one that I'd expect people to be able to explain in simple terms." He'd respond to her - to which the Swanmon would smile and nod back, seeming to appreciate the reassurance. With that, Charles would continue to look around, though...
... He'd then notice something out of the corner of his eye - what almost looked to be something glimmering or shining. He'd glance down to a little nook or cranny under the roots of the old tree, what could've been a den for some small animal... And yet... He could've sworn he saw something shining for in there - for but a split second. "... Arakan, did you see that?" He'd ask gently, crouching down to get a better look in the little cranny. "Something like... A glimmer or shine, in this hole here?"

Some of the words the Swanmon used were strangely familiar to Arakan. She couldn't grasp their meaning though, as if they were a distant and fleeting thought lingering at the back of her mind. Like having something on the tip of your tongue, but only barely being able to recover it. "Rookie.." She repeated to herself, and then nodded at the lady. They didn't want to question what they meant by some of those things, or what a Wanyamon or Gaomon was exactly. Mostly as not to draw suspicion to herself, but also partially because she had the faintest semblance of a feeling that she sort of knew what those were. There was no real way to emphasize in words how slight the feeling was, but it was there. Becoming more clear and prominent the more she focused on it, and when she did she could tell it wasn't her own.
There might've been more to it if she had kept on focusing, but right now she was helping Charles out. She spent a bit of time circling the tree, and at one point even attempted a bit of a climb. An attempt that very quickly, though harmlessly and comically failed with her tumbling off and doing a little roll backwards onto her rear. She shook her head just as Charles had brought up the question about the light. "Wha..? No, I didn't- Where's it at?" She asked while she waddled over, trying to poke her head in at the little cranny he had discovered. "...Nah, I don't see it." The Plotmon shook her head.

he sight of Arakan tumbling back as she tried - and failed - to climb the tree would elicit a soft chuckle from Charles, as did her proceeding to try and shove her head into the hole at the base of the tree. In a way, she really was like a little dog in this form - and she couldn't help but draw the similarities between this and a Terrier of some sort. Yet, once she pulled her head out, she would shake her head - prompting a frown from Charles. "Huhm... I could've sworn that I saw something..." He'd murmur to himself, peering down into the hole - though it was too dark to really see anything. He didn't really have anything he could use to illuminate it, either; the lighter he had in his pocket would probably only accomplish setting the tree on fire, and his cellphone's battery tended to drain pretty fast whenever he'd turn up the brightness on it... ... Thus, against his better judgement, Charles decided to reach his arm into the hole. He was able to reach up to his elbow into the cranny under the tree, hand searching around - and at first, there was nothing down there - just dirt, roots, and the occasional stone... yet... ... his hand would brush over something. It didn't feel like a rock - running his thumb over it, there almost seemed to be... Buttons? Wrapping his fingers around the mysterious object, Charles would begin to pull his arm out to look at what he found, unsure of what to expect. But what he found was, well... Something unusual. A device - black, with grey and brown accents, a dark blank screen, and a couple of buttons. "Huhm... Does this ring a bell to you at all, Arakan...?" He'd ask the Plotmon - showing the device to her. Initially, it seemed as though the device was inactive, but.... Suddenly, it would light up, beginning to loudly beep! Charles would nearly drop the device - startled - but managed to keep his grip on it; trying to figure out at a glance if any of these buttons were an off or volume switch - "What in the world...??" The Swanmon, too, seemed equally startled - she would let out a sound somewhere between a squawk and a honk, and her feathers puffed up in alarm as she glanced in the duo's direction..!

Arakan eyed the device curiously and then tilted her head at it. She had never seen anything like it before- It looked like one of those strange handheld game things some kids at her school would have, but only just so. This was unique and didn't actually seem to be too convenient for actually playing video games on. "Maybe it's like uhmm.. Hm. I really don't know what that thing is for." She furrowed her brow and took a step closer to get a whiff of the device. It smelled about how she would expect it too, with traces of the dirt it had just come from and the weird smelling tree.
When the device beeped she about rolled back onto her rear again, completely skipping the prerequisite step of being stuck to a tree. Her fur stood on end and she let out a little yap, bracing herself in such a way to make it look like she was standing her ground. Once she calmed a bit and regained her composure, she became aware of her actions and flushed slightly from embarrassment. "Heck.. Uh- Volume! Lemme see?" She raised a paw for the device, noting that Charles was having a struggle with it. The Plotmon didn't wanna just assume Charles couldn't figure out technology very easily just because he was kinda on the older side but.. With the Swanmon looking ready to freak out, she wanted to try her hand- er, paw at it.

The device would continue to beep as Arakan and Charles both looked the device over - but it wasn't really clear what buttons controlled volume or power! Really, it didn't seem as though any of the buttons visible on the device did! "I-uhm..." Charles looked a hair flustered at not knowing what to do, scratching his cheek. "I didn't push anything when it started beeping, if that helps?" He'd try to supply, looking up to glance in Arakan's direction, but...
... As he'd glance up, he'd notice that someone - something? - else was here. A small digimon, not unlike the other children that the duo had run into - fuzzy, with large catlike ears, and a long bushy tail... Yet, it was also a soft golden color, and wispy - almost as though its fur was made of smoke. The Swanmon that had been standing around would drop the bucket and sponge that she was using to clean the surfaces of the equipment, and Charles would fall quiet - staring, watching... The strange little digimon - presumably a Wanyamon - would hop up to Charles, and begin hopping around him as though it was happy and excited, even though it did not - could not? - make a sound. It seemed as though it was able to pass thru things as well, as it would pass through Arakan - the sensation it left behind being something akin to static-like tingling.
"What in the world...?" Charles would finally murmur - before he realized that, as the Wanyamon would pass in front of him in circling around him, that the device's beeping would speed up and slow with the digimon's distance from it. "... So this is reacting to you, isn't it?"

Yeah, there was still nothing to be done about the loud beeping, even with Arakan being allowed a closer inspection of the device. She was tempted to start randomly hitting buttons but that might do the opposite of help- For all she knew, that could cause it to start flashing on top of make really loud beeping noises. It was hard to do anything to the device with her paws, regardless. She really wished she had real fingers, or at least opposable thumbs. "Mrr.. It would help to know what was making it beep. Maybe it would make the beeping stop, too." The Plotmon grumbled, starting to stress perhaps a little more than necessary. She just didn't want to have a whole village of baby Digimon freaking out on them. It was a lot more attention then she really cared to have.
Arakan looked up and followed Charles' gaze to the strange golden Wanyamon that to her just sort of seemed to have suddenly appeared, as if from thin air. When it went through her to get to Charles, she shuddered deeply with discomfort and stepped to the side. Shaking herself of that dreadfully uncomfortable tingling, making her fur stand on end. "Ugh- Why is that the source of the beeping? Is it like a goofy ghost detecting thing? Assuming that's a ghost." The pup huffed indignantly. On the upside, the Wanyamon didn't seem actually hostile. It could've been worse, like if it had been outright murderous.

"I suppose so," Charles would respond to Arakan's question - watching as the Wanyamon continued to hop about around him. "It certainly seems to be reacting to the little fella, whatever it, and they for that matter, are..." He'd muse out loud - reaching out a hand as though to try to interact with the Wanyamon. The wispy little cat-like digimon would pause in their hopping, as though to regard Charles' hand for a second - sniffing it... Before they'd decide to snuggle up against it! It seemed they were partially phasing into Charles' hand - leaving it feeling tingly and staticy...
... But even though the Wanyamon seemed incapable of making sound, Charles could... Almost feel the emotions coming off of the little digimon, now that he was in contact with them. He could feel the elation, the excitement, the utter joy coming off of this little guy - the feeling of having found something that you have been looking for, for so, so, long... This feeling in particular, would make Charles blink a bit, tilting his head at the Wanyamon. "Were you... Looking for me?" He'd gently ask them - and though the Wanyamon did not respond with words, he could still feel as those joyous emotions spiked, the Wanyamon nodding in his direction. It didn't take much more for him to realize, that this little fella had been calling to him, ever since he had first entered the Digital World...
... Charles couldn't help but smile gently, fondly, to the Wanyamon - moving his hand over them in a petting motion, as he murmured "I'm sorry I kept you waiting, then... Though, I'm not sure where to go from here, if I'm honest." The Wanyamon seemed to know, however - perking up at the device in Charles' hand. With a great bound, the Wanyamon would pass thru Charles' hand to reach the device - seeming to...
... Disappear into it..? Charles would jolt back a bit, startled - but would watch as the Wanyamon would break apart into strands of bright blue, barcode-like data, entering into the device in his hand. The beeping would, with that, cease - but as he went to look at the device to figure out what just happened...
... He'd notice as something would 'materialize' above the screen of it. A small totem of sorts - depicting from the waist-up a blue, humanoid Shiba Inu with a red headband, and bright red punching gloves, the gloves being punched together. The totem was just small enough to fit in the palm of someone's hand - but it would only remain long enough for Arakan and Charles to get a good look at it, before it would 'sink' into the screen - entering the device much like the Wanyamon did. All was quiet for a few moments - in fact, it even seemed that the Swanmon that had been cleaning the equipment either had finished and left, or had gotten startled off, at some point. Once Charles could find his words, he'd blink slowly, before glancing to Arakan as he stood up - murmuring "That was... Strange, but..."
"... I think that I might've figured out at least part of the mystery. Still, there comes the question of you and your own form..." He'd glance down to the device, and a small impulse in the back of his head suggested the idea of... Using the device. For what, he was unsure - but he'd glance to Arakan for her input as he'd ask "Should I try using the device now...?"

Arakan had no idea what she had just witnessed, but it was.. awesome. It was unlike anything she had ever seen or imagined, despite her being an artist with a creative imagination. Though in her defense, she had been more for calligraphy and more traditional art- Nothing like designing monster things that turn into totems and then become one with weird ghost detectors. Yeah, no, that was a little out there for her. Still, it was awesome.
"Strange as it was, you seem fine to me.. Are you fine?" She asked, visibly concerned. Being an outside perspective she obviously couldn't tell if some kind of damage hadn't been done. She was half-worried Charles might turn into that cat thing and then be stuck that way, in the same way she was stuck as Plotmon. That device though.. If they were truly in the same boat and Arakan wasn't doomed to an eternity as a waddling puppy, would that mean the device was the only part of the puzzle she was missing from this? The girl furrowed her brow while all these questions started going through her mind.
"Maybe? I don't want you to be stuck like I am. But I guess there's no real way to figure this all out without giving that thing a try." Arakan grumbled uncertainly. "It's your call, really. I don't want to let paranoia stop us from making progress with this spirit stuff but I don't want you to be stuck like me, either."

"I feel fine, besides a tingly hand - but it's starting to go down." Charles would comment in response to Arakan's concern - smiling down in her direction. "It's okay - I think I'll be alright, kiddo." He'd reassure her - reaching down to pat her back. In hindsight, he could see why she was worried - that he might end up turned into a digimon like she is, but... It sounded as though Arakan's problem was - at the very least - an uncommon one, if the Swanmon they had talked to before didn't know what to make of it either.
Arakan didn't seem totally sure about using the device either it seemed, though. Charles would quietly listen to her - nodding along, and thinking it over. "Well... The risk is certainly there, you're right. But I have a feeling that the circumstances that led to you being stuck in that form are a little different from the circumstances that would lead to me being in this form, if using the device does what I think it does." He'd mention, before continuing "And either way, even if I do end up stuck, too, I won't leave your side until we can turn you back to human; and I imagine that whatever method it takes for you, it would take the same - or similar - methods for me to turn back, too; so either way, we'll still spend the same amount of time out here." Smiling warmly to her though, he'd mention "Caution is healthy, and I understand and appreciate why you're wary of all this... But you gotta look at it from all sides and think ahead a little, too, kiddo."
With that though, he'd glance to the device in his hand once more. The buttons, it was hard to tell what was for what, but... He could feel those familiar impulses once more - tugging, coaxing, but not forcing; just... Guiding. Guiding his thumb to the buttons he'd need to press, to bring the totem up once more - displayed on the screen this time. It felt almost like second nature, with the spirit gently nudging him along - helping him figure this out. And when it was finally time to actually change into this new form, it...
... Well, to put it simply, it felt different. New. He could feel the way that his body shifted - and yet, there was no pain. He could feel the spirit alongside him, almost as though it were helping the change along - helping make sure the process went smoothly. He could feel the fur sprouting, his ears changing, a tail, fangs, claws, changing senses..... It took him a minute to realize when it was finally over, and when he did... He couldn't help but just feel a sense of... Strangeness, over him - familiarity yet unfamiliarity at the same time, as he looked over himself.
Much as the totem depicted, Charles was now in the shape of a strange, blue, humanoid Shiba Inu - floppy ears, curled tail, muzzle, and all. He sported a red headband around his forehead, and a strange pair of boxing gloves over his hands. Gaomon, something in the back of his head supplied, much as the Swanmon had said before; which led him to wonder if the Gaomon and Wanyamon were related to each other in some way. Were Wanyamon baby Gaomons? He was still learning this digimon thing, after all.
As the initial shock and awe of his new form faded though, Charles couldn't help but note something else. He felt... Stronger. More spry, more energetic - he couldn't help but find himself hopping in place on each foot, and miming a few punches into the empty air; "Haha... I don't feel much like an old man in this form...!" Charles couldn't help but remark with a laugh, glancing over to Arakan. It was now that he would note that he was much shorter, too - somewhere around 4-5 feet, if he had to estimate. "Guess I shrunk, too... But this is... This is new, very new... I feel alive all over again, like this..." He'd breathe, looking himself over, unable to help his wagging tail all the while.
He wasn't stiff, his back wasn't giving him trouble, he had energy to spare... How long has it been, since he could feel like this? Since he could feel like he could go on a marathon, go take boxing lessons all over again, go climbing in the woods outside a home from long ago, in a quiet town in Tennessee? The glee coming off of him at these notions running thru his head were practically palpable, it was like...
... It was like he was a spry, strapping young man all over again.

The pup arched her back a bit and gave her stubby tail a bit of a wriggle when she was reassuringly pet. It was weird- She definitely wouldn't react this way to being pet or rubbed if she were still human, but when she were like this it was all just instinct being satisfied. It was either instinct, or it was Plotmon. At this point she just didn't know.
"Wh-..Hey! How come you get to be on two legs?" Of all the things she could have noticed first, it was that minor detail. But to be fair, from the start she had been complaining to herself about having to waddle around on four legs and become adjusted to it. If she had to wear a headband and some goofy boxing gloves to be able to walk on two legs while stuck like this, she would happily do it.
Her one real but small complaint aside, she tilted her head curiously at Charles' new form and looked him over. "Huh.. What were we supposed to do if you turned into a Digimon? Do we still wanna try going back to Shibuya or..?" She could only imagine what sort of panic it might start with these two weird dogs rolling around Shibuya like a couple of dorks, though when she thought about it it actually sounded fun. Like a viable option, even. But that might just be her inner excited Plotmon talking.. barking?

Charles would give Arakan a somewhat puzzled look at her little complaint, before he chuckled a little - scratching (or at least trying; boxing gloves weren't good for scratching, he quickly found) the back of his head as he did. "Ah... I'm not sure, kiddo; I suppose this is just how I happened to come out?" He'd respond with a sheepish smile, adding "If I knew how to help you walk on two legs, heaven knows I would."
Regarding her question of what they were supposed to do, well... Charles would take a second to think over what to say from there. "Hm... I don't know if we should try heading back to Shibuya yet - not while you're still stuck, unless we had a way to hide or disguise you, but... I had sort of hoped that changing into a Digimon like this would give me some insight on how I could possibly help you turn back." He'd speak, crossing his arms as he sighed - musing out loud "I don't think I really figured anything out, though - beyond it being related to this device, and the spirit, though... Do you remember seeing any sort of device, somewhere near wherever you woke up at?" Charles would glance to Arakan with the question, visibly inquisitive. "Maybe the issue is you don't have your own device to control this at all?"
He'd begin walking, moving back towards where they had entered the Village from - adding "All else fails, maybe we could figure out a way to communicate with your spirit, since it seems that I'm a Spirit User, too."

"Spirit User.."
The title sort of.. resonated, in a way. It gave her a feeling similar to earlier when she had found Charles. A feeling that told her she was doing the right thing and that she should keep pressing on. She hesitated to hold to that feeling. Admittedly, she was quite scared of the idea of communicating with her spirit. Despite that feeling of rightness, she shook off it's influence and shied away. She looked back at Charles and shook her head in response. "No I don't remember anything like that.. I don't feel like I was ever truly unconscious so much as I was just- not in control? I don't know how to describe it." The Plotmon huffed, trying to think back on those moments between landing on her head and 'waking up' in the Digital World.
"There was blackness, but I wasn't unconscious. I've been passed out before and it was always just like a flash, you know? Like my brain turning itself off and on again as if no time had passed at all. When I hit my head the last time, I was still kind of aware of myself." Arakan began to explain, recounting things to Charles as best as she could in order to provide information that would make this investigation a little easier. "My head didn't even hurt for all that long. It was like it just up and mysteriously vanished. To be honest, it felt less like passing out and more like someone else had taken hold of the wheel. Like.. I'd been put on the back-burner until things were safe for me. It's such a weird feeling." Arakan shook her head as even she had a hard time believing her own explanation of things.
"Communicating with my spirit seems like the best choice, but what if something goes wrong? What if my spirit is angry and malicious and doesn't wanna let me turn back? Would I just anger it by trying to speak with it?" Her own personality mixing with that of the Plotmon's made for a good bit of paranoia. All that puppy-like energy combined with Arakan's mostly logical thinking made for a lot of involuntary thoughts and feelings. It obviously wasn't the first time today she had acted as such, but only now was she starting to make sense of her own actions.

Charles would frown gently; sitting with Arakan as she talked about all that she could remember, leading up to having woken up in the Digital World. It sounded like for, at the very least, a good portion of it... She was less unconscious, and more a passenger in her own body - which, certainly sounded bizarre, but... Given that she likely had a spirit hanging about her, he figured it'd make sense that the spirit might hijack things for a little while, for her safety. There was no device to speak of though, it seemed; just her, and this form of hers that she was stuck in... Charles frowned, debating whether retracing her steps would be worth it, but...
... With the suggestion of trying to find a way to communicate with her spirit, Arakan seemed to show some uncertainty; worrying over whether her spirit was going to be angry or malicious in any particular way. Charles would think it over a second, considering her worries... Though would eventually reach over to pat her back, mentioning "Breathe, kiddo." in a soft, soothing tone. "Seeing as you're struggling with the impulses of what seems to be an excitable puppy... I have a feeling that your spirit isn't all that malicious - just pent up with energy, with a lot of puppy-like instincts and tendencies, I'd imagine."
In fact, if the spirit is that of an excitable puppy... "Frankly, if I had to make a guess... If what that swan digimon had said about spirits being long-dead digimon who didn't revert is true, then perhaps your spirit's just excited about having a body again, after being without for god knows how long. I think any spirit would be at least a little excited, over having a body again - even if it isn't their own body." Charles would mention - adding in suggestion "And even if your spirit isn't quite ready to turn back, if my guess about the spirit just being an excited puppy is correct, we could always try tuckering you out - burn off that excess energy, and see if that makes the spirit happy and more willing to rest for a little while."
"But, we won't know until you try reaching out to that spirit." Charles would begin to conclude, smiling reassuringly to Arakan. "Take your time with it; follow your gut instincts on this. Even if this doesn't work out, I'll still be here to help."

Charles had said a lot t o help really reassure the anxious little Plotmon, allowing her to take a moment to just.. breathe. The pat to her back was odd what with the whole boxing glove deal, but it still did the trick. Arakan shook herself off a bit and let out the breath she had been holding. "Thanks Charles.. Maybe we could try it together? I guess you could do it a whole lot easier with a device, but still." She just figured that having Charles there would help her to keep that inner puppy at bay.
She looked back up at the tree, eyeing it for a moment before nodding to herself. "If the tree really is special or whatever the deal is, it might be wiser to stick around it. At the very least, we should stay in the village. I know for certain that this is where my spirit wanted me to be." Arakan stated and then informed before laying down in the grass. She had been on paws for way too long today. And while she still had the energy to chase a bat through Hell, she wasn't used to having paws and the idea of having to be on them all of the time.
"So just gut instincts, then.. That's easy. I can do that." The Plotmon huffed, putting her front paws out so she could rest her head on them in the grass. Not long into her attempt and tuckering herself out was already starting to sound like the best option she had.

Charles chuckled sheepishly, mentioning "I think the device sort of... is a catalyst, or something, for the transformations; I don't know if it really has anything to do with the spirit itself..." Course, that was just a theory, he was still learning about all of this. But whereas the spirit seemed to sort of understand the device - the impulses guiding and nudging him when he wanted to use the device to actually change to this form - they weren't there when he'd glance down to the device for any indications of whether it could help with communications... As if the spirit either knew that the device couldn't do it, or didn't know if it could do it or not.
Charles would frown gently at the device - unsure of what to make of it, at first - until Arakan's mention of the tree would draw his attention back to it. He... wasn't sure if there was necessarily anything special about the tree, but if Arakan's spirit wanted her to be here, too... He wouldn't argue against it; nodding in response. "Do you have any clues why your spirit wants you to be here?" He'd ask - shifting his legs crisscross, and chuckling as he watched her plop onto the grass. "I don't think there's necessarily anything supernatural about the tree itself, but perhaps it holds some significance to your spirit?" Or his spirit, for that matter, now that he thought of it...
For when he glanced up at the tree... Somewhere within, he could feel hues of familiarity, of nostalgia, welling up. It'd take him a good half-minute to notice that the Wanyamon had emerged once more, hopping up onto one of the roots that had curled up out of the ground underneath the tree; and yet, he could still feel those hues of familiarity and nostalgia coming off of the spirit - as though there was a link between them now. Once settled on the root, the Wanyamon would curl its tail around itself, as if settling down - simply staring at the flowers that were in full bloom, hanging from the boughs above. Admiring them, Charles would note after a few moments of thought.
"... It is a beautiful tree, isn't it?" He couldn't help but comment - he wasn't sure if he was saying it to Arakan, to the spirit, or just to himself... But the comment would still get the spirit's attention - the Wanyamon glancing back in his direction, and nodding with fervor before it returned to watching the flowers above. In hindsight, Charles couldn't help but wonder if spirits were supposed to emerge from their users like this, but... He wouldn't question it too hard; the little fella seemed happy, like this.
