"Ugh, it's so hooot," Adrian complained as the tall human and his red dragonoid partner Shoutmon walked through the Folder Desert of the Digital World. Shoutmon was loving the hot weather, since he himself mainly used the element of fire in his attacks. For Adrian however, the place was just too dang hot. Thankfully he had enough sense to wear a red T-Shirt and blue jean shorts. "Why are we doing this again, Shoutmon?"
"You wanted to see more of the Digital World, didn't ya?" Shoutmon asked, a big grin on his face, "well that's what we're doing! I don't think you've ever been to the Western Flatlands anyways, have you?"
"Is it all just miles and miles of desert? If it is I think I've seen quite enough of it."
"Of course it's not! There's this place, the Folder Desert, which has a nice oasis somewhere but I'm not sure where it is. There are ancient ruins to explore, an island full of volcanoes, Rustport Town, Hardware Den, the Valley of Dragons... I think you'd like that last place, since I know I would!"
"Yeah, because you're a dragon yourself. Don't think that place would have any civil Digimon though."
"Of course it does... I think. Come on, we can probably get some cactus juice somewhere around here."
Desert’s are not fun. They’re just hot, wide and plainly empty. That was what Ryū was learning. After all, he was quite lost in what was, one of the largest expanse of nothingness in the Digital World. A terribly humid and seemingly endless exercise in patience. Something that the little orange dinosaur lacked.
His stomach was empty and as expectantly in a desert – there were no food sources for miles. A great rumble echoed over the silent desert, almost like a dragon’s roar and equally as vicious. “It’s not faaaaair,” Ryū moaned. Stomping his clawed paws into the dunes of sand, sending it flying in all directions as he threw a great tantrum. He could really use that… that…
Before he could complete that thought, he saw it. Over the top of a dune. The body of a flaming and quite monstrous pig sprawled lazily in the desert sun. The little dinosaur’s eyes lit up as he caught sight. A sliver of drool appearing at the side of his mouth as he imaging chowing down upon the meat. “Dinner! Dinner! Dinner!”
Ryū leaped forward, all tiredness forgotten, as his hunger took over. Then, great pain coursed through his body. “M-My d-dinner?” He moaned as he stepped backward. The thing he had thought to be a Boarmon—was, in fact, a cactus. He as just run headlong into a cactus. A mirage of the desert?! That’s not fair!
The angered Agumon opened his mouth and released a ball of dancing orange fire at the body of the cactus which burst into flames!

True, the desert was not very fun to traverse in. It really was just endless miles of sand upon endless miles of sand. Maybe a mirage or two if you were lucky.
However, for Adrian and Shoutmon the desert might be dangerous in many more ways than one. As the two walked, they both heard a loud roar coming from the distance. They couldn't tell where the sound came from, but they both knew it could mean no good.
"You heard that, right?" Adrian asked his partner, still looking around for the source.
Shoutmon nodded. "Yep. Definitely something big and scary. Be prepared to run."
"And you be prepared to fight," Adrian responded, getting his Digivice ready as Shoutmon summoned his mic staff. After a minute or two of waiting, they were confused as to why they didn't see the wild Digimon yet.
"Um, isn't this the part where we start fighting the thing?" Shoutmon asked. "So… Where is it?"
"I don't know…"
Right then they heard the sound of something lighting on fire. They turned around and saw a little Agumon having a temper tantrum, presumably because they were tired. It took its anger out on the nearby cactus. At least it wasn't on either Adrian or Shoutmon.
"An Agumon…? Wait, then where did that loud noise come from?"
The furious little Agumon opened his mouth for a second time, releasing a ball of flickering orange flames. The already burning cactus was reduced to a husk-like, blackened cinder. Ryū stomped up and down as a sort of victory dance. When suddenly, he caught the sound of low conversation, behind him. Ryū turned – looking for the voices. Of course, it wasn’t hard to find the owners, thank to the barren wasteland desert, he was stuck in.
It was another one of those weird flesh creatures. He squinted, trying to remember what they were called again. “Hoomon. You’re a hoomon!” He pointed his claw at the boy who stood before him. This one was a lot different than the last one, he had met. Much like Digimon, they seemed to come in different types and species. At least that’s how it seemed to him.
At his side was an unfamiliar dragon-like Digimon. Red skinned, with a twin-horned head in the shape of a ‘V’. For a moment, Ryū stared at the pair. Then, he blurted out the first thought that came to him. “Do you have any food!?”
Taking a glance back towards the blackened stump that was once a cactus, the little orange dinosaur added, “Oh... Did you know cactus are spiky and don’t taste good?”

The partners watched in a mix of both joy and minimal fear as the Agumon continued to completely torch that poor cactus to oblivion. "Ah come on, what did that cactus ever do to you?" Shoutmon joked, desperately trying to hold in his laughter.
Eventually the Agumon heard their voices and turned around to their location. It looked at Adrian for a good while, squinting his eyes. The Agumon then pointed at Adrian and announced that he was a "hoomon."
Both he and Shoutmon sweatdropped and collapsed like it was some kind of anime. After getting up, Adrian had to correct him. "No no no, I'm what's called a 'human'. You almost got it right though!"
This Agumon just stared at Adrian and Shoutmon for a bit longer, to the point where they were both getting confused and freaked out. They looked at each other, giving each other faces of bemusement before Adrian spoke up again. "Erm… Can we help you?"
Finally he spoke again, asking if they had any food. He turned back to the blackened cactus and asked if they knew that they didn't taste good. "Dunno, kid. Never eaten a cactus before. Sounds like the kinda thing that'll upset your stomach, if you know what I mean."
Back to the original question about the food… "Yeah we have food, but now's not the best time to eat. We heard growling so there might be an angry wild Digimon around here. Did you hear it?"
For a second, Ryū simply stared blankly at Adrian and Shoutmon as if considering what to say next. “Hooo-mon!” He blurted out again – a lot louder and more confidently. Nodding with excitement, he said, it twice more. “You’re another hoomon, a hoomon!” In fact, Adrian was the second human that Ryū had met in his entire life. In his eyes, they were quite strange creatures. But at the same time, not that different to Digimon. They at least acted pretty similar to one another…
“Help me?” Ryū asked, tilting his head to the left. Once again, he paused. “I’m hungry,” he added, nodding twice. “Do you have any not-cactus foods.” His nostrils expanding as he smelled the air, searching for any traces of food. But before he got his wish, the ‘hoomon’ and his red partner explained that there was an ‘angry, wild Digimon’ around here. “I don’t see anyone but maybe. There is a lot of Digimon out here. I think. But I’ve never gone this far away from my home, before...”
“Don’t worry though, I’ma beat it up and then get that food!” His confidence as well as arrogance on clear display.

Despite Adrian clearly telling the orange dinosaur how to pronounce "human," it apparently went in one ear and out the other as he still pointed at Adrian and called him a hoomon. Apparently this Digimon had met another human beforehand, as he said Adrian was "another hoomon". "Yeah, more and more of us are appearing in the Digital World. Also it's pronounced 'hyu-man'. Try saying that. 'Hyu-man'."
The orange Agumon then proclaimed that he was hungry and wishes for foods that weren't cactuses. Shoutmon had to chuckle at that. "Cactuses are definitely not good foods. I assume you like other food aside from them, right? Got any preferences?"
After warning the little guy about the supposed wild Digimon in the desert, he immediately claimed that he was gonna beat it up without any hesitation at all. The partners just looked at each other, not saying anything but the message was clear:
He is not gonna last long out here. He is not gonna last long out here.
Shoutmon began to smile once again and extended an arm out to Ryu. "Why don't we go somewhere that's safe? Then you can get all the food you want. My name's Shoutmon and my partner there is Adrian. What's your name?"
