The plan had at least been hammered out. Their objective was clearer than ever, even if part of its outcome wasn't really under their control. But what else could they do? There was no way for them to deal with this problem one their own, as far as she saw; sure, they could conduct their investigation just as they had intended to, but totally stopping it from spreading...? No less than madness.
Especially when considering that the chances they had of finding hostiles weren't precisely marginal. The fact that at least one Snimon could be lurking around was no laughing matter. Those things were pretty dangerous from the get-go. Driven berserk? The amount of damage they could cause if unchecked was a cause of worry.
A nod was given to the nun that had previously been a cat. "Fair enough. Let's advance, then; no reason to keep whatever lies ahead waiting."
Indeed, what was ahead was not the most hopeful picture; damage that had been needlessly done; fungi that were beginning to take root on the nearby trees, and most importantly... a digimon that was either spent or in the process of dying. The brunette took one long look at the Snimon, and couldn't avoid feeling pity for it. "Is there... anything we can do to cure that guy? He looks like he's in a lot of pain."
If not, what was the best they could do? Subdue the bug, then get him to a place with more sophisticated equipment? Amy was sure that, at the very least, Mikemon would know how to deal with an infested digimon; he was a fairly skilled doctor, after all.

The thought of more of those insects sneaking around was not one that Syre wanted to think about - but it was definitely in the back of their head. Maybe the data signal of a Sistermon was just going to be a beacon that drew something even worse to their location, or perhaps the insects completely lacked fear or the sense to avoid stronger signals.
This was all a risk. But they had to press forward, or nothing would end up done about this. With a nod to Amelie, Syre led the way, and once they found the Snimon, the Sistermon felt her heart almost twist into a knot. The sheer agony the bug found itself in was grotesque, hard to even look at. If Syre could have just kept thinking of it as a monster, perhaps she would have been able to look at it more calmly.
But things were hardly that simple, and Amelie knew it as well. The aunt would likely notice a shift in Syre's voice, as she focused right on the situation at hand. A hollow, logical tone:
"... This might be a decent opportunity. I don't know if we'll be able to do anything for him, but he's weak. Analyzing him, maybe Whitewater or Terminus can get a better idea of how the fungus infects insects - and maybe find a way to prevent more cases of this happening in the future." A cure, before it got this bad. It might have sounded direct and maybe insensitive...
... But Amelie might be able to tell that Syre was barely managing to keep it together. To the Sistermon, this was just one more unfair thing that the world had to offer to them. And once again, she steeled her resolve, trying to push her own heart out of the matter entirely.
"We'll need to subdue him as best we can. Think we can manage?"

While a sad truth to admit, Snimon's situation was far from ideal. It was quite obvious that Syre didn't fancy having to deal with such an unsavory turn of events, but... nobody else was available at the moment to deal with this. In a sense, it was almost as if they were the first responders? It was a funny way to see it for sure...
There was not a lot that they could do in order to relieve the Snimon's pain, and just like her nice had mentioned it, the best they could do was probably to retrieve the digimon so it could be examined more closely. The brunette let out a long sigh at Syre's words. "It truly sounds like our hands are tied, don't they? I don't like this situation one bit, but I doubt we have a say in the matter."
Subdue it, huh? Well, there was no way to discern how brittle the bug's constitution had gotten, but Amy guessed she could try. "Let's do it."
Words weren't needed anymore. From one moment to the next, the human's visage was replaced by Heraldmon's. The next moment? The aberration was engaging the Snimon; it used its tendrils and a good deal of strength to try and grapple the digimon into the ground. Would that be enough for Syre to come in and knock the digimon unconscious? Or would they have to struggle a little more to deal with it?

Syre didn't like this. She didn't like anything about this - but with Amelie's support, at least the answer to the situation at hand was clear. The Sistermon gave a nod to Amelie's analysis, eyes trained carefully on the insect, that sigh weighing just as heavily on the cat as it did on Amelie.
"Right behind you, Amy."
Even without talking, the two knew just how to coordinate with each-other. The large, armor-plated form of the Heraldmon was able to quickly close the gap, and pushed against the ground, the Snimon responded in kind. It hissed, wildly bucking its back, swinging its free claw at the side in an attempt to haphazardly hack right through the spirit's arm - but Syre was faster. She swiftly slipped herself in front of the insect, a dark pulse radiating from her eyes for a moment. The insect found itself entranced, and the Sistermon raised one arm, slamming the pistol down against the back of its head.
The bug crumpled, collapsing on top of itself, knocked out cold from a single blunt strike - one so strong that it caused the clip to snap right out of that pistol!
"..." Silence filled the clearing, as Syre looked carefully at the bug, getting a closer look at its condition. "No doubt. Black 'veins' right underneath the skin, just how dad described it." And truth be told, 'dad' here didn't think there was much that could be done with these sorts of patients.
It was just how it was.
There was nothing they could do.
Syre grit her teeth, those familiar pains striking deep right then and there. "This shit again, huh?" There was a mixture of hollow defeat and anger laced in the ceramic gunslinger's tone. "Let's... let's get this guy to a lab. I'll call for a landing point in Whitewater."
Fiercely tense as she was, she couldn't afford to break down. Not yet: not until they were safely out of those woods.

That had been rather fast! Maybe it had been due to how many situations the duo had shared together? The conclusion had been pretty obvious; the weakened Snimon had no chance against such a coordinated assault. He didn't even last a minute.
Once they were done, it wasn't lost to the aberration how... strange were Syre's reaction after she was done gesturing at the beast. Was there anything in her mind? She couldn't quite tell, considering that her hearing ability was nonexistent at the moment. Had she been able to, a worried expression would make its way to her countenance. Alas...
Heraldmon effortlessly lifted the unconscious bug, before a tendril extended itself on the Sistermon's direction. Once/if it made contact...
Is... everything alright, Syre? Did you get hurt? You seem to be a bit distressed.
Amy's voice, when distorted by the nature of her current evolutionary stage, plus being projected directly into the Syre's mind, would probably not be a very pleasant sensation. Hopefully, by now, the Sistermon would be used to it!
At least right now, there was no danger in sight; no bugs to face, and hopefully not for the crazed kind. Hauling this one wherever they were supposed to do seemed like an easy enough task. Yet... maybe things wouldn't be so easy? There was no way for the digimon to truly know.

Honestly, Syre briefly forgot about her auntie's spirit's quirk. Amy could 'see', but she couldn't exactly 'see' in this form - and the same applied doubly for her other senses. It was why the Sistermon looked on in a bit of confusion as the Heraldmon lumbered over to pluck up the bug, and reached another 'arm' over to her -
Oh. Oh. Hearing that voice in her head, it clicked at once in Syre's head - and the momentary shock was replaced with a tired, mental sigh.
Physically, I'm fine. The Snimon didn't manage to nick me... how about you? She returned that concern, keeping her senses open to the area surrounding her. With the Snimon knocked out, the 'normal' noises of the woods started to pick back up. Distant 'crickets' of some kind, a few birds - the normal sounds one would expect here. She gave a glance towards the Snimon, and with a blink, pulled out her D-Terminal, and sent out a message to Whitewater.
Requesting landing coordinates for a fungal infected Snimon. Please provide - will deliver via portal directly.
She thought it out as she typed it, before resting herself against a tree, keeping in contact with the Heraldmon's tendril.
You'd think I'd be used to it by now, Amy. She shook her head. I've learned how to fight, sure - but I keep running into things that doesn't solve. Having to fight, both knowing that its the best thing to do - but also knowing that everything won't just be 'alright' afterwards. I... I guess that's just got me down, you know?
She shook her head. It's not how I pictured joining the Knights would be. Its more... 'real' than I expected, I guess.

The task had been easy enough; an exhausted and erratic digimon had no chance whatsoever against a highly coordinated and skilled duo that had the surprise factor to boot. That didn't mean that Syre's question wasn't appreciated, however.
Not doing so bad myself. This bug ain't even heavy, so it's not that hard to carry it around.
Giant scythes/sickles aside, the insect's body was pretty light, so no problem there. The group kept on advancing, even though Amelie wasn't lost to how oddly specific the Sistermon's response had been. She was about to comment about it, but then the answer to said question decided to come on its own.
The aberration stopped in tandem as Syre began to type, and then listened attentively to what followed suit. Quite the dilemma, wasn't it? A mental sigh ensued.
Yeah, I get what you mean. Sometimes, keep on pushing forward seems so hard when it seems there's no end in sight to all this madness. Feels like we're not making any progress at all, y'know?
A pause ensued. Amy herself had pondered this one topic countless times, and had always reached the same conclusion.
I wouldn't call it 'balance', but just like there's people looking to do good deeds and improve the Digital World, there's also plenty of selfishness and people who work only for their own personal gain. It might seem like an eternal battle when there's clearly nobody gaining the upper hand, but... I feel like we can't afford to give them an inch. Else, who knows what might happen.
And endless clash wasn't the most enticing fate for the Digital World, but at least it beat things looking as bleak as they have been before. Things were definitely improving, but surely not at the pace everyone wanted or liked, but it wasn't like a lot could be done about that.
I don't know about you, but I think I won't live to see any meaningful change happen to the Digital World. Things have been in a state of disarray for long that it probably will take more than a lifetime to fix them it. Still, I think that fighting for its betterment is among the noblest things you can do. That enough of a reward for me, at least.
Would that reasoning be enough for Syre? Maybe, maybe not. Right now, it was a bit hard to tell.

Honestly, what was heavy for the Heraldmon? Though Syre was strong, the Snimon would at least be cumbersome for Syre to hold... well, that was neither here nor there.
The request was called in, and for at least a little bit, Syre and Amy were granted a reprieve, a moment of reflection between the sinewy hulk of a golem and a ceramic, gun-slinging Digimon. That's how it would appear on the surface, at least. But as Syre focused on the conversation, it felt much more like she was just speaking normally with her auntie, as if they were sitting together on a couch back in the Library.
Heh... you don't really have an easygoing outlook on all this, do ya? Syre chuckled, a smile perking at the edge of her tone. I never thought it would be easy - I guess I just never thought of how hard it could be. Like, stupidly, impossibly hard... but I guess you're right. Its all for nothing if we just throw our arms into the air and let 'whatever happens, happen', tempting as that might be.
That 'mental' cat bit her lip, shaking her head as Amy moved the conversation along. 'She wouldn't live to see the world change'? Amy... She gave a sigh. I... I don't think it has to be the world. So long as you can make things better for the 'world around you'? I think you'll at least put a good foot forward! She gave a smile, the thought interrupted as the device she was holding finally buzzed back.
Secure area... portal coordinates... perfect! Looking it over twice to double check, Syre would stand up and create that portal - a metal floor visible on the other side. All we need to do is drop him there. The 'mons there will take care of the rest... and I guess we'll at least walk through the rest of the route while they sort that out?

It was funny how this whole deal had resulted in a moment of respite in their otherwise busy mission. It was just a matter of time before that ended, however. Syre was diligent, so Amelie wouldn't surprised if they were near—or had already arrived at the drop point.
What would happen in the meanwhile? A rather meaningful exchange between the two digimons ensued. Had Heraldmon's words come off as depressing or bleak? Syre's answer sure seemed to evoke that. Welp, that hadn't been Amy's intention at all.
I wouldn't call easygoing, but it's more or less how things are, aren't they? Nobody said it would be easy, but I think that bettering this world is a very worthy goal, wouldn't you agree? It's marvelous in the sense that every single person or digimon has the power to make a difference if they so wish. It's nothing like this in the human world, you know? Societal echelons are so-well defined that trying to do the smallest change gets you hurdled with an unnecessary amount of obstructing bureaucracy.
A mental shrug expressed that she hadn't meant a lot by saying that she wouldn't live long enough to witness a lasting change to the Digital World. Was she right? Probably, probably not.
Fair enough. I didn't mean for that to sound like I was being a downer, you know? I just wanted to say that change can come very slowly, and, especially when compared to a normal human's lifespan. I can say I can already see how the wheels of change are beginning to turn, and that makes me happy. At least for now, that's reward enough, don't you think?
Soon enough, everything was taken care of, at least regarding the Snimon. Mission complete, more or less! Amy took the opportunity to undo her spirit evolution and stretch her sore limbs.
"Well, at least we took care of the more pressing matter. Shall we continue? We still have a good deal of the forest to scan, after all."
With any luck, they wouldn't find a lot more infected bugs in their way. Dealing with them would be a hurdle.

Were Amy's words bleak? Well, somewhat! To be told that the goal you're trying to reach for was probably going to stay out of reach confirmed the cat's frustrations. But maybe it wasn't about that. Maybe it was about starting to re-frame her thinking, to try and pursue her own way forward.
'Mom always rushed in headlong'. Despite the danger, she pushed through - but was that the best way to go about this? The Sistermon blinked as Amy pressed on with her response: despite this 'impossible' task, every person had the ability to push forward, to make a better world. She even managed a small chuckle about hearing how this wasn't mirrored in the human world.
Maybe... but I think you'd have a good shot on that side as well, Amy.
She shook her head. Amy spoke of her own brevity again, the ultimate giving a small sigh as she tried to piece her thoughts around it. Was that really enough? To know that you pushed the start of something that would be seen tens, if not hundreds of years later?
You've spent a lot of time thinking about it, haven't you?
Her thought there was cut off, as the amorphous spirit dropped off the Snimon through the portal. Disaster averted - as Amelie dropped down to her human state, Syre similarly slipped back down to that of a BlackGatomon, stretching and cracking her joints.
"Yeah, let's get back on track... um..." Syre picked up her bag, surprised at the weight of it. Had they really found this much in such a short span?
"... Let's just get the map done in our heads and report it at the end. This is getting ridiculous." To that, though, Syre actually managed a smile and a chuckle. Her outlook picked up a bit!

A small smile would've drawn on Amy's face at the remembrance of K's memory.
Heh, that's true. K was always the type to act before thinking. I'm not sure if that was the best way to tackle a situation that pretty much requires long-term thinking, but I also reckon that our situation would be a lot worse without first responders. The figurative flames that envelop the Digital World would just advance relentlessly. I'd be a fool if I claimed I've got the truth regarding this, but the least I can do is to try and do what I think is the right thing.
A mental shrug would indicate that the girl behind the aberration wasn't too concerned about her own future. Despite her musings including it as a part of what was to come, and how she would probably not be present to witness the future—if any change to the Digital World, she wasn't too concerned about what the future might hold for her. Quite funny, wasn't it?
Can't say I haven't. Enough time in the Digital World pretty much forces you to put things in perspective, at least if you're mature enough about it.
But that was that. Dwelling on that topic further would be unbecoming, especially considering the duo's current situation. "Back on track, it is. Let's go search some more shrooms and finish that map."
Despite the otherwise serious tone the conversation had, Amelie felt comparably at ease. It was always a good thing that the two could just talk about any given topic without much issue. In a sense, it was proof of how strong their bond was.

Syre wasn't used to sharing a mindspace, that much was clear! The thought that she had for herself was something that Amelie had picked up on - Syre startled for just a moment as her aunt brought up K! The Sistermon blinked, listening to what she had to say, ultimately giving her a short nod.
She did what she felt she could. Never satisfied to simply sit on the sidelines when she could do something. I'm... well, proud of her, of course.
She was silent for a few moments after that. The topic soon dwindled down, and the Sistermon would soon find herself using her own voice talk to Amy. They still had a job to do, even if they didn't have enough hands or bags to completely pick through these mushrooms themselves.
"Sounds good to me. I'll keep an ear open for any more of those infected Digimon, but if its this ingrained into the woods, maybe the wildlife's already learned to steer clear." Syre was a bit hopeful on that, but for now, the two would press on as they would before. And for the next two hours, things would go relatively as Syre expected. It took them only about a half hour to fill up their bags the rest of the way - Syre opening a portal so they could drop off that weight somewhere safe and secure - and the two would keep pressing on, Syre first mentally documenting, then moving to make a rough sketch, of the area and the most-infected spots of the woods.
"... As expected, it seems to prefer dead trees and logs, but I don't think we've seen any near water. If it was originally native to the Dark Area, maybe it just doesn't do well in the rain - but the trees around end up taking most of the moisture, so its able to grow where its darker and the canopy is thicker."
She scratched the back of her chin with her glove, lost in a bit of that tangent as she looked over that rough map. After a moment, she chuckled. "Sheesh, I think dad's rubbing off on me with that kind of thinking. I do wonder what happens if you take a 'healthy' mushroom and put it underwater, though... not that I'd want to try it with a stream out here."
An idle thought, but it might have been the start of finding an answer to this! Syre chuckled. "I hope you're enjoying the walk, anyway. I'll have to make this up for you at some point so we can actually do something fun!"

Could anyone who had known K not being proud of her life and work? Amelie didn't want to risk being absolutist, but she found that really unlikely. She had been an exemplary being through and through, and her absence would... well, already had made an impact on everyone who had known her. That much was obvious.
But, that wasn't what they were here to do, and that moment of reminiscence, while fitting in its own way, had be hurried up in the wake of the matters that were more urgent in nature. They had a job to do, after all. The number of bags they had didn't matter!
"Hopefully we won't find any more hostile digimons in our path, but yeah. Being careful is probably the best thing we can do in the face of something like this. If one of those things catches us by surprise rather than the other way around; can't really tell what these guys are capable of if they're on a more healthy shape." The next two hours had been very productive for the duo; the two had gathered more mushrooms than what the brunette could count. Quite the productive outing, overall!
She adopted a pensive expression at the sudden remark and observation coming from her thought. She was definitely a smart cat. "You definitely sounded like Mikemon right there." After those words, she smiled. "Maybe we can use that in our favor if things line up correctly. We'd have to check out how water affects these, and see if we can use that in our favor. Maybe the solution to this is as simple as getting a decent amount of water running in the harder to reach places this forest has. That'd solve things nicely."
She nodded afterward. "I am. Why wouldn't I enjoy spending some time with my favorite niece? We can do something actually fun afterward, but doing this ain't half bad, you know? It's been enjoyable, in its own way. And taking a break from the Dark Area every now and then is... probably the healthy thing to do. This is way more relaxing than the usual stress of running a city."
That much was for certain.

Syre always had a knack for observational skills - whether it was frustrating the gang on Uno night, spending a little too long thinking on a board game, or in this case, just noticing something that might have been missed in a write-up otherwise!
"Sheesh, sounding like my dad..." She playfully shook her head, but then nodded at Amelie's point. "Definitely something we should check. For all we know, it just prefers shade, or it doesn't like to root up where the dirt is loose, or something. But if this is an answer..."
Well, then it would be quite interesting! Maybe all it would take was a thorough rain, or maybe they'd get a bunch of Divermon to do a few sweeps through the forest? It was about there that Syre's line of thinking became less exact, but heck, she didn't have to have all the answers!
"Heh... I guess compared to trying a build a city out in the rocks, this might be a nice change of pace." Syre gave a nervous chuckle at that - she did worry about Amelie spending so much time out there. Sure, she meant well and the place probably could help a lot of people, but it was the Dark Area. All it would take was a power-hungry warlord or two wanting Amelie's spot -
Nope, different, better thoughts, Syre! "Um..." Spinning that topic out of her head, Syre spun to a different question. "How has that city been doing, anyway? All I really know about it right now is some bits and pieces."

Hit the nail in the head, huh? That didn't make the statement any less funny, all things considered. While it was true that most kids didn't want to be compared to their parents, sometimes, the resemblance between Syre and Mikemon was uncanny. Not like anything else was expected, though! That funny moment wouldn't live for long, however; was a solution afoot? It certainly seemed like it!
"With any luck, that'll work. It'd make matters all the easier for certain. Just progressively flood certain areas of the forest until the shrooms are dead, then move on. I could even oversee the whole process to make sure things are being done the right way if it comes to that, but we should see first if that solution would actually work. Otherwise, matters would become even worse."
Doing whatever they were supposed to do responsibly was the way to go, probably. Speaking of which... the sudden surge the cat demonstrated in the city was somewhat flattering and served enough to swerve the topic towards something different.
"Yeah, being under the sun for a change feels great. What I can say? The Dark Area isn't the most hospitable place, even though that's a bit obvious. I've been making sure I get enough time out of it, however. The place has a knack of being somewhat depressing if you're not in the correct mood. But other than that, it's been pretty well; the city's first phase of construction has been finished, and everything couldn't be running more smoothly at the moment. How about your things? Have the knights been up to anything interesting? I've heard that you were going to be assigned specific areas to patrol, but not much more than that."
She imagined that K's absence had left a void in leadership, but... the team hadn't disbanded, so that meant somebody had to be running the show, right? Amy couldn't but wonder who was that person or digimon, even though asking risked being a bit rude.
