Some distance away from Rosewood were the militaristic campgrounds known best as the Spartan Training Grounds. It was here that the young tamer first heard about the efforts to build a town not too far away, just beyond the Village of Beginnings. Though hesitant to go off on her own, Unica was eager to help nevertheless. It took her a while to build up enough courage to ask Dinohumon for permission to leave. She had left the training grounds many times prior, whether to visit the newly hatched Digimon in the village or to return home after a long weekend in the digital world, but each and every time, she first asked for permission. She undoubtedly believed that if she received verbal confirmation then she wouldn't get in trouble for doing something she wasn't supposed to. Of course, Dinohumon was a kind soul and dared not force anyone to stay at the training grounds if they didn't wish it, so Unica was allowed to leave to help efforts in Rosewood.
The trip was fairly short and uneventful, much to the young girl's relief. The town was still heavily under development, though there were defined areas sectioned off for clear, distinct purposes. Over there was where the town had first started being built, for it was the most developed; over there was where the builders were currently working, with buildings of different sizes and shapes all in various stages of construction; and over there was where the police, guards, and mercenaries were stationed in order to keep an eye out and ensure no one was causing any trouble. Without any forethought, Unica began to wander through the streets, admiring how new everything looked. Each building had a fresh coat of paint, the roads weren't cracked and worn, and even the flowers in the flowerpots outside some of the buildings seemed to be smiling with potential.
The problem was that everyone had their own tasks at hand. Even those who were resting or taking it easy at the pub knew what they were there to do in Rosewood. Unica, not so much. She had arrived to help, but she wasn't sure even sure what still needed to be done. Construction seemed to be crucial job, and so she made her way to the nearest work site. Such a small human surrounded by such large, powerful beasts was almost comical, in it's own sad sort of way. One of the workers -- a rather scantily clad Kinkakumon with a stack of long, wooden boards in her arms in lieu of her weapon -- noticed Unica and approached her. "This is no place for a child," the Digimon said, cocking an eyebrow under her mask in curiosity.
"I wanna help!" Unica chimed, stopping a foot on the ground as though to show her commitment and determination.
The Kinkakumon didn't move for a long moment as she carefully studied the child. Eventually, she lifted her gaze and scanned their surroundings for someone who could've been Unica's partner, guardian, or friend. But no one stood out to her. Those who stole a glance in their direction only stared momentarily, not enough to make the demonic Digimon believe they were with the human child standing in front of her. Kinkakumon looked back down at the girl before asking, "Did you come here by yourself?"
"Yep! Dino-Human said I could come," she explained, putting her hands on her hips and looking quite proud for making the trip all by herself.
This information surprised Kinkakumon slightly. She knew Dinohumon, but the idea of this young girl being under the protection of him rose many other questions. "Dinohumon? From the Spartan Training Grounds?" she asked, hoping to make sure they were talking about the same Digimon.
"Yep!" Unica said, confirming Kinkakumon's suspicions.
This posed an interesting predicament. On one hand, Unica was a young human girl who probably didn't have the strength, intelligence, or stamina to really help in he physical construction of Rosewood, but if she was determined enough and if she was able to keep up with the Digimon at the training grounds then perhaps she did have so potential after all. Kinkakumon let go of the boards she was holding with her left hand and balanced the stack on one of her shoulders, keeping it from falling with her right hand. "Very well. Will you help me carry some wood from that pile," she pointed at a stack of refined timber a few feet away, "to the other side of town?"
"Okay!" Unica exclaimed before racing over to the pile and struggling to get a firm grip on some of the longer pieces. After some difficulty, she ended up grabbing a handful of the smaller pieces instead. Once her arms were full, she turned around and waddled back to the tall Digimon who'd been waiting for her. "I'm ready!" Without a word, Kinkakumon began walking down the street, nodding and smiling at folks she passed by. Unica mirrored this behavior, proudly announcing, "I'm helping~!" in a sing-songy voice to anyone who made direct eye contact with her.
Such a proclamation caused quite a few Digimon to smirk and chuckle at how adorable she was. "You sure are," some of them would muse in passing, a statement which only made Unica feel more proud of what she was doing.
Minutes ticked by as the two navigated the streets of Rosewood and, after a short while, they arrived at the secondary construction site. Kinkakumon placed her stack of boards atop a pre-existing pile and turned around to make sure that her human companion hadn't wandered off. Unica was still with her, but only barely. The girl was already winded, her legs wobbling under the stress of carrying her body's weight worth of timber. She stumbled over to the pile and, unable to reach the top of the orderly stack, she dropped the wood in front of it. While gasping quietly, she looked down at her hands.
"Are you alright?" Kinkakumon asked, worried that the girl had pushed herself too far.
"My tummy hurts, and I got a splinter," Unica explained, turning around and showing her palms to the towering Digimon. All the while, her cheeks were rosy, sweat dripped from her forehead, and she continued to breathe heavy in an attempt to catch her breath.
Kinkakumon took a single step closer, crouched down, and gave a good, hard look at Unica's hands but she was unable to see anything that could've been causing the girl harm. No splinter in sight. She stood up straight again and exhaled through her nostrils, clearly bothered by something. "Why don't you find the first aid tent and-?"
"No! I wanna help!" Unica complained with a pout as she brought her hands to her sides and balled them into fists. Kinkakumon smirked as she took note of the fact that Unica was no longer complaining about splinters. If she was able to squeeze her hands so tightly without them hurting, the injury must've been superficial, taking place solely in the girl's mind. The wood may have dug instead into her skin or the weight was too much for her to handle; but regardless of the reason, the pain only appeared to be temporary.
The golden armored Digimon nodded slowly before saying, "Okay, but you should carry less next time." Unica nodded in approval. "Alright. Let's go." With that, Kinkakumon turned and began heading back toward the other side of town, where there was plenty of timber to spare. A smile crept across Unica face and, with a laugh, she skipped after the Digimon, excited to help.
