It had been some time since his last trip to the Digital World, and this most recent trip had been a rather eventful one. Faustein had successfully stolen some of the legendary royal honey kept onboard the Beemon base, the “ Royal Hive” with the help of a rather odd Impmon named Mandrake and afterwards, freed some slaves from a rather brutish, moronic Musyamon slaver with the help of Stacy, a spirit wielder. Finally, he had traveled aboard a Trailmon which he took this since it would eventually lead him back to Central Shibuya Subway Station, the entrance to the Digital World. Aboard it, he had met a young twin digimon tamer named Nanami who had a Lopmon named Mocha and its twin, a Terriermon named Cream. Interestingly enough, he had met yet another Lopmon on this same train, one that apparently called itself Alucard and was an itinerant vampire slayer. After such a hectic adventure, Faustein was back in the human world once again. This time, he had intended to take a nice, relaxing rest from all the action he had been having recently in the Digital World. However, he would find that the next few days had very different plans in store for him. Holy Heisenberg…my visage has become quite ghastly indeed…I must devise a plan which will allow me to enjoy a well-deserved long siesta one of these days.
He had mused as he gazed at his reflection in the large mirror next to his four poster, king sized bed. His stubble had grown even further and the signs of sleep deprivation, aka the bags/dark circles under his eyes had become more prominent lately. As if that were not enough, he was also looking fairly gaunt as could be seen from his sunken cheeks. However, he did not have time to dwell on his exhaustion. Why was this the case? Well, the previous day, he had gotten a strange package from a recently founded even more mysterious private company. Inside it had been a single flash drive and a user manual along with what seemed like an I.D. card and a letter addressed to him. This was the source of his preoccupation today since inside the package had been the software and notes about the company’s newly developed online VRMMORPG game called Digimon Online. As he mulled over what he had read in the letter and the game manual, he murmured to no one in particular “Digimon Online? Seriously? Just what is this new company’s motive? I was under the distinct impression that Digimon, the Digital World and anything relevant to that was supposed to be kept a secret from everyone, especially the general public…but here they are, practically announcing it to the entire nation. O ye Norns, I humbly beseech thee, let not any troublesome situations befall me.”He groaned this brief prayer to the Norse goddesses of time and destiny as he studied the information before him, though only for dramatic effect. He could feel the proverbial mental gears in his brain whirring to life as he tried to come up with a list of possibilities for the present situation and also as to why he was one of the beta testers chosen for the maiden voyage of this game. As if that were not enough, the letter had been written to him in order to request him to not only play through this game as one of many beta testers to ensure product quality and provide feedback, but also to request him to undertake a secret mission entailing the investigation of some rather inexplicable occurrences within the game. No rest for the weary wicked…ah, what a drag…woe is me…at least I am getting paid handsomely for my troubles...
He thought while readying himself through his daily morning ablutions and then proceeded with the installation of the game software through the provided flash drive onto his custom-built, high-spec desktop computer. Once everything was ready, he finished the last step which was connecting the VRMMO headset as it would be the terminal for interacting with the VRMMO fantasy world of Digimon Online and swiped the special access I.D. card through his card reader module as per the instructions in the confidential letter. Then, he put on his brain-computer interface helmet, aka his VRMMORPG headset and gave the instruction
“Commence activation of game software for VRMMORPG: Digimon Online.”
He directed his computer thus through the advanced voice command module he had installed in it when he had first ordered it built so many years ago. In accordance, the computer started running the Digimon Online VRMMO game app. Then, he felt himself hurtling at a blinding pace through a multi colored tunnel, a step which he knew was a feature of many recent VRMMOs. Seconds later, he felt his mental persona manifest in the character setup section which was a large, white colored chamber in the game world with a simple, unremarkable female NPC at a computer. So, he hurried through the setup of his character and since he was lazy, he decided to model his character after himself for the most part with certain distinctive changes to keep his true identity anonymous, of course. Finally, at the end of that process, it was time to choose his character name for which he decided to use his online handle “KuroFaustΩ”.
“Congratulations on completing the character creation process. Welcome to the world of the VRMMORPG, Digimon Online, user KuroFaustΩ. We hope you enjoy your beta test playthrough.”
The NPC said, playing the usual automated message which was another feature common to most if not all VRMMORPGs. With that, he was sent off through the usual second tunnel of swirling multiple colors and felt himself manifest in the game world moments afterward. Once he materialized completely, Faustein performed all the usual checks which he was accustomed to doing in these sorts of games while muttering to himself
“Movement capacity verified…sensory input checked…graphics quality confirmed…emulation speed assessed…”
This took a few minutes, but soon he was finished with the process and ready to begin the game. He then looked about to study his game environment which seemed to be a replica of the area of Japan around Kusanagi Station in the real world. He was impressed to say the least at the top tier quality of the emulated environmental details. Then, he checked his avatar’s status to memorize the immediate objectives. His avatar was apparently waiting for two of his close friends, a male NPC named Teddy and female NPC named Ivy, to join him.
I see, so is this a co-op type game then? Should be entertaining, methinks.
He wondered as he waited, but then his reverie was interrupted by some breaking news flash which began streaming across the giant hi-definition television screens mounted on the roofs of the buildings around him

He wondered as he waited, but then his reverie was interrupted by some breaking news flash which began streaming across the giant hi-definition television screens mounted on the roofs of the buildings around him
“ S.A.P., the international police force, have found the European headquarters of the A.O.A, an infamous criminal organization. Together with the U.N. peacekeeping force, they have raided it and arrested many of the A.O.A.'s top brass. Officials think that the recent cyberterrorism that's been going on is connected to the activities of the A.O.A.”
The announcer explained rapidly, and then Faustein heard his avatar chuckle automatically and even felt his thoughts which was a surprise since most VRMMORPG games were not capable of such a high level of technological sophistication
So…A.O.A, huh? If I recall correctly, that particular organization has been infamous for having orchestrated some rather malicious deeds with respect to Digimon in the past…maltreatment, forced growth, chimera creation, etc.…
As he experienced his avatar’s thoughts, Faustein had the ghost of a smug smirk on his thin, firm lips and mused silently
Quite specific and detailed for a VRMMORPG game…I presume that the MC and his friends will have to resolve this issue…this looks like it will be a promising game plotline indeed.
His avatar’s friends were running late, it seemed, due to some folly of theirs of not pre-ordering the software for their login passes. These were apparently needed to play a newly released online game which was rather unimaginatively titled as “Digimon Online”. Hence, his avatar was waiting at the rendezvous spot to meet up with them. It had been some time now and he was about be lost in his thoughts. To his chagrin, however, he was interrupted there by the sight of his avatar’s NPC friends exiting the login purchase center. They had taken an inordinately long time to accomplish what should have been a rather simple procedure.
Geez, just how freaking slow are these two?! I have seen snails move faster and accomplish things more quickly than they can!!
Faustein felt his avatar think silently, apparently alarmed at their inefficient modus operandi. That said, what concerned his avatar much more was the fact that his female friend, Ivy, who was apparently not the biggest fan of Digimon had come along with them. It was then that Faustein felt his avatar’s mouth move, apparently by some sort of automated program, the same one which probably manifested his avatar’s thoughts earlier. His avatar was now in the process of chastising his female NPC friend, Ivy about her accompanying them and contributing to their late arrival to the festivities
“Why in the world are you here, Ivy?! I thought you didn’t like Digimon one bit!! Also, couldn’t you have saved us all a lot of trouble by just remembering to pre-order the login pass?!”
Upon hearing that, the female NPC named Ivy let loose a tirade against Faustein’s avatar, causing him to wince as her shrill voice hurt his eardrums. Then, Faustein felt his avatar speak automatically yet again, retorting just as vehemently
I see, so these two do not get along, eh? Furthermore, it seems that this segment of the game is fully automated with a fast forward blocker plug-in attached to it. What a nuisance…I wish I could skip this section entirely instead of having to listen to this pest’s nagging outburst.
Then, as he thought more about this sequence of events, he realized that something was amiss
This particular bit with the overly long wait time was not detailed in the game script. I wonder, is this a mere bug in the programming? Or could the game company that sent me that letter and the beta test invite be a virus attack victim? Is a hacker is targeting it, perhaps? Regardless, I will need to be on guard for any other such abnormalities. How irksome…

Faustein grumbled silently thus in his mind as he waited for the cutscene to end, though his suspicions about something wrong with the software were aroused to some degree. Luckily, he did not have to wait much longer for the male NPC named Teddy intervened to end the verbal dispute. Then, Teddy dragged Faustein’s avatar and the female NPC named Ivy off to the Digimon Online registration center. Once there, Faustein noticed that his avatar’s male NPC friend was practically drooling with excitement over the high sophistication of the technology being displayed in the Center, mainly something called the Matrix System.
I see, so this male NPC named Teddy is some sort of techno buff eh? Good to know…he reminds me…of me. How very amusing…
Faustein mused silently as he watched further and witnessed his avatar’s automated programming lead the group to the registration counter where they were to set up their accounts.
A game within a game, eh? What is this, Inception? Good grief, how quaint…
Faustein thought, bemused by this turn of events. It was then that he noticed that his avatar could choose any one of three teams composed of three digimon each and these teams were organized by their overarching themes. There was the Offense Pack that consisted of Koemon, Agumon, and Renamon X on the left. Then there was the Balance Pack which was comprised of Kotemon, Patamon, and Renamon X in the middle choice, and finally the Maverick Pack made up of Kumamon, Guilmon, and Renamon X. He felt his avatar’s mouth move again as he spoke
“Darn, I can’t decide on which one!! All of them look too cool!!
So this MC I am playing as is programmed to be indecisive, eh? He is such an irksome nuisance.
Faustein mused with a frown as he watched the later events unfolding in the situation, namely the female NPC, Ivy, give him some advice
“OMG, if you’re not sure, then just do process of elimination!! Avoid those packs which you don’t like!!”
Then, he heard and felt his avatar respond with a whine and remonstrance
“But I like all of them! There isn’t a single one which doesn’t fascinate me!!”
In response, the female NPC, Ivy, just instructed Faustein’s avatar to expedite the selection process
“Just hurry up and pick one of the three already!! I am tired of waiting!! You’ve got nothing to worry about anyways since among us, you’re the best at handling any and all digimon!!”
She paused there as if thinking and then ended with a warning
“If you don’t choose one in the next 2 minutes, me and Teddy are going to leave you behind!!”
Faustein’s avatar groaned once more in protest
“But Ivy…come on, don’t be so mean…”
To that Ivy simply replied with a glare and a repeat of her warning
“I mean it!! I swear I will leave you behind and go on ahead with Teddy!!”
Once more, Faustein avatar groaned in protest, but since he had no choice, went ahead and chose the pack
Finally…holy Heisenberg, this kid is annoyance incarnate…at least the ordeal is over now, this part of it anyway…
Faustein thought as he made his avatar choose the Balanced pack consisting of Kotemon, Patamon, and Renamon X. As his avatar studied the pack, Faustein took a few moments to memorize the overall characteristics of the three digimon as well as come up with potential strategies for use in the field.
Weapon, magic attacks, and healing. Best pack for teamwork, eh? Let’s see, Kotemon is a balanced swordsman and learns healing moves, so that can be the vanguard, Patamon is a healing specialist which I suppose would be middle row. Finally, Renamon X, says here that it uses ice and lightning and that makes it the backrow as the longest ranged squad member. Yes, that should suffice for now…

Then, he watched as his avatar and his friends, Ivy and Teddy, finished their registration for the Digimon Online VRMMORPG. At this point, his avatar rushed off to the Chamber Room, leaving Teddy and Ivy at the registration counter immediately afterward. It did not take long for him to find it, apparently, and when he did, Faustein saw his avatar become quite excited and geek out over the prospect of entering the world of the Digimon Online game. To make things worse, his avatar was standing in the Chamber Room gawking like some starstruck groupie at the sights therein and consequently, it took several minutes for him to return to reality
Holy Heisenberg, this kid is a super nerd….though I suppose I should not criticize him considering the fact that I am one as well….
Faustein thought as he patiently waited for the next few frames of the game to finish loading completely. Thankfully, after those several minutes had passed, the game started moving again and then his avatar headed over to the Operator, told her his online handle, and entered the Chamber Capsule. The capsule closed just as the two NPC friends of Faustein’s avatar, Ivy and Teddy, arrived in the room. They shouted for him to wait, but alas…he was already gone. Before entry into the game, there was a rather theatrical FMV and then, Faustein saw his avatar find himself in the Login Room of a place that was apparently known as Asuka City in the game’s Digital World. After looking about for a few minutes, Faustein witnessed the scene with his avatar being approached by one of the clerks that was making the rounds to welcome the players.
“Welcome, user KuroFaustΩ, to the Asuka City server. Please ensure that you collect your digimon pack data from the Main Lobby.”
With that, Faustein’s avatar headed off to the Main Lobby for which he had gotten directions from the clerk. Once his avatar stepped over the threshold into the Main Lobby, Faustein felt the game turn over control of the avatar’s body to him in full.
Ah, the game is truly afoot now, I see. Most excellent, but the dev team could expedite the process so players do not have to wait for so long before being able to start the game. Oh well, this IS still the beta release, so this little hiccup will probably be corrected by the time of the full alpha release.
Musing thus, he made a silent mental note of this so that he could compile it with other feedback in a word document and send it off to the game company that hired him after finishing the playthrough. Then, he made his avatar look about for any important NPCs to whom he may need to talk to in order to proceed with the game. After a few minutes of surveillance, his avatar was alerted to the presence of two NPCs who had the usual speech bubble emoji floating over their heads, signifying they wanted to talk to him. One of them was tagged as “Maniac Phillip ” and the other as “Gamer Takashi”, both were standing by the path leading to the east. So, Faustein made his avatar head over to Maniac Philip and once his avatar was within range, the NPC Maniac Philip’s program activated and played the pre-recorded message

“Did you know? You can fight Card Battles in addition to Digimon Battles. Feel free to try it out sometime.”
Then, the program governing Gamer Takashi activated, playing yet another pre-recorded message
“Looking for the Digimon Lab to pick up your digimon data? Well, you’re in luck, because this path leads to the Digimon Lab.”
The NPC Gamer Takashi said while pointing further down to the east path and then both NPCs fell silent as their function had been executed completely. Faustein attempted to make his avatar proceed down the path, but then hit an invisible wall of sorts with a reminder that he needed to pick up his triumvirate cell of digimon first. Then, an arrow appeared pointing towards a set of stairs, so Faustein controlled his avatar to head up said staircase. Upon reaching the topmost landing, his avatar spotted a large curved desk behind which ran around the periphery of the room. There were three NPCs here, one of which was standing on the right side of the desk and the other two which were behind the desk. There was a large set of automatic sliding doors a few paces away from the right side of the desk with the placard denoting “Entrance to Arena Front Desk” affixed to the wall above them. On the opposite side, aka adjacent to the left end there was a second set of giant automatic sliding doors. This one had the placard denoting “Admin Center” affixed to the wall above them.
After taking in all these details, Faustein made his avatar move around a little more to see he could activate any more NPC programs. Sure enough, first to activate was that of the NPC on the right side of the desk. As he made his avatar approach, the tag above the male NPC’s head showed the name “Indolent Valon” and this one gestured to the space above the head of Faustein’s avatar. Naturally, since he was curious, he looked up and then he saw it, a strange orb floating above his avatar’s head.
“This is called a satellite, and its function is to manage your data over the course of your playthrough of the game.”
The NPC Indolent Valon said and then fell silent according to its programming. After this, Faustein tried to make his avatar enter through each of the two sets of automatic sliding doors, but each time, he ended up hitting an invisible wall with a brief alarm noise and a message informing him that he was not yet ready since he had several requirements to be fulfilled first. Then, an arrow appeared pointing in the direction of the female NPCs behind the desk.
I see, so then these two areas must be ones which are unlocked later in game…Alright, for now, it should suffice to follow the lead of this NPC.
Faustein thought as his avatar listened to the female NPC which was a guide, ensuring to make mental notes of data she gave which could prove useful later
Okay….Digimon Online….Objective…City and Field Guide….and then….Battle Tips….Training Basics….and finally, Status Screen….good grief, that was long indeed.
Then, he turned his attention to the Tamer Services Agent to the Guide’s left to activate her program
“Welcome, would you like me to call out your partner Digimon?”

Naturally, Faustein was curious to see these digimon in person, so he made his avatar pick the “YES” option. As a result, the NPC instructed his avatar to move to the marked coordinates on the floor of the room, and then she began to download the digimon data for his avatar’s partners from his satellite above. Faustein watched bemusedly as his avatar was once again hyper-excited, but it was understandable as he too was curious about his selections. This process took several minutes and while he waited, Ivy and Teddy, the two NPC friends of his avatar had shown up at last.
“I went with Teddy…just because I am lazy like that.
The male NPC friend Teddy informed, but then the female NPC friend Ivy pointed out that she was going by a username that was different from her real name
“As for me, I chose Caitlyn to be the name for my avatar.
In this manner, the conversation went onward, and by the time the three had finished their conversation, their three sets of three digimon each which they had chosen at startup appeared before them, those of Faustein’s avatar first and others afterwards. He made his avatar greet the three digimon, Kotemon, Patamon, and Renamon X in turn just as his two friends, Ivy and Teddy did beside him. Teddy had apparently gone with the Offense Pack while Ivy had opted for the Maverick pack. Here, things became intriguing since Faustein noticed something odd about his avatar’s Renamon X in comparison to the rest of the digimon present.
Specifically, when he looked at her, she had a sort of neon green aura around her which he did not see around the other digimon in the pack. As if that were not enough, whereas the other digimon were basically expressionless or had obviously pre-programmed expressions and responses, she gave him a knowing smile…as though she knew who he was and that he was not some random player, but rather someone she knew well or had at least seen before. Then, there was the fact that, once the attention of the others was occupied enough, she sidled up to his avatar and while leaning close she whispered softly in order to avoid detection
“It’s good to see you again after such a long time, Master…I have missed you so very much.”
Needless to say, Faustein’s suspicions were aroused even further, but still he made sure to control his avatar so that he maintained an impassive, almost bored face as he responded
“Oho, we meet again, I see…so then, am I correct in surmising that you are THAT Renamon X?”
He asked with similar subdued vocal volume to which the Renamon X chuckled briefly at his nonchalance, but nevertheless replied in the affirmative
“Indeed I am, Master. I am glad to see that I am so very memorable to you after only one encounter.”
Faustein made his avatar throw a sidelong glance at her and then sighed dramatically before remarking in the same whispering manner

“It…was a rather dramatic one, so this is but understandable. Does your presence here mean there actually are some worrisome undercurrents in this ocean?”
She had a rather dramatically scandalized expression on her vulpine face which was of course, a feigned one and then chuckled in that same foxy manner before giving her rejoinder
“Aw, come now Master…you make it seem like I am some infamous Absol. I am merely a humble little Renamon and nothing more.”
Again, she had caught him unawares, only this time it was with a reference to a certain popular franchise with both an uber long running anime and a series of games over various consoles and platforms from back in the human world. Nevertheless, his outward expression of detached calm did not slip for even a second. Instead, he just made a ‘Hmm’ sound and then refocused his attention on his playthrough the game while instructing
“Very well. It is time to return to the others and start the playthrough.”
Upon hearing that, the Renamon X grew serious and nodded
“By your command, Master.”
Then, she saluted him and followed him as he led the way back to the other digimon of his chosen pack. Faustein watched as Teddy and Caitlyn, the two friend NPCs to his avatar, wondered who had designed Digimon Online. Then, Faustein watched as his avatar decided to head out, and so, the group agreed to split up from that point. Once, the game handed over control of his avatar to Faustein again, he controlled him to leave the Main Lobby automatically, with his three Digimon in tow. Upon walking out of the Main Lobby, Faustein was alerted by an NPC hailing his avatar and this case, it was by and NPC Tamer named Jigen. As he made his avatar approach the NPC Tamer Jigen, its program activated, playing the conversation sequence
“Howdy, I haven’t seen you around here before. You're new around here, right?
To that, Faustein made his avatar choose the obvious answer
“Yeah, I am and I just got my Digimon not too long ago.”
At this point, the NPC had apparently decided that it needed to test Faustein’s avatar and his battle prowess
“I see. Then, come on and let’s throw down, friend. What do you say?”
Then, out of the choices that appeared, Faustein chose the middle option for his avatar
“But I don't understand the rules very well just yet, so how would we fight?”
The NPC uttered a short booming laugh before reassuring him
“There is no need to worry if you don't understand the rules right now. EXP gain is the important thing for beginners.”
Thus, the first of many battles Faustein’s avatar would face in the game began in earnest. It was a fairly short match since the NPC’s digimon was merely a freshly evolved Kuwagamon. Faustein found that he did not even need to use all of his avatar’s digimon. In fact, he had only needed one digimon, and the one from among his partners which he chose for this battle was Kotemon.

After dodging and weaving for a couple rounds in order to avoid the Kuwagamon’s attacks, he had made the Kotemon use its finisher move, “Fire Men”, a total of twice for a 6 hit combo involving somersaulting flame imbued shinai strikes which managed to knock the Kuwagamon for a loop. This was a thorough victory due to the elemental advantage dealing critical damage to the overgrown insect. After its defeat, the NPC Tamer Jigen congratulated Faustein’s avatar on his win leading to a brief celebration by him
“Hey, nicely done! You're pretty good for a first-timer. You may even have to potential to become the World Champ someday.”
To that, Faustein made his avatar thank Jigen for the compliment as per the dialog choices available
“Much appreciated, and yeah that’s my dream someday.”
The NPC Tamer Jigen then smiled, nodded, and offered some advice on how to proceed
“You need to learn more about Digimon and you should visit the Digimon Lab before going outside Asuka city. By the way, do you have a Folder Bag?”
Naturally, Faustein’s avatar did not possess that item yet as he could see from a cursory inspection of his Inventory sub-menu. So, then Faustein made his avatar look back at Jigen while thanking him and then answering in the negative while also asking about its acquisition origin
“Ah, I see now, that’s very helpful so thanks, Jigen. Also, I don’t think I have that yet, where do I get one?”
The NPC Tamer Jigen then pointed towards a building in the distance while explaining
“See that building over yonder? It’s called the Yellow Cruiser and you’ll have to go there to learn all about Card Battles as well as to get your Folder Bag.”
As would be expected, Faustein made his avatar gaze at the building that was pointed out and then, the conversation sequence came to an end. Afterwards, a small cutscene played wherein Faustein watched his avatar walking automatically off into the distance to eventually reach the Digimon Lab. Once there, upon entry, as he had before; Faustein made his avatar look around to take in the sights and sounds before doing anything else. At that point, he had triggered the conversation sequence with the NPC on the left side of the doorway, this one being called “ Lazy Miyuki”.
“Your Digimon's parameters will differ depending on how you raise them. So be sure to choose and plan wisely.”
Faustein pondered the issue for a few moments and then filed the data away in his mental dossier for future reference. Then, since the choices came up for him to select from, he chose the most relevant one
“I see, alright then. I will keep that in mind. How would I unlock their digivolved forms, then?”
In response, the NPC Lazy Miyuki pointed to what looked like an android standing by the right side of the doorway while explaining
“See that? That is what is known as an Evo-Navi. If you talk to it, then you can obtain valuable tips on which trees are available for which digimon. Unfortunately, it only gives information on those three that you possess and nothing else, so you won’t be able to plan any strategies for enemies with evolved digimon using them.”

Faustein frowned internally as he mused silently, mulling over this information
Well that is rather foreboding, I suppose I will just have to be more observant and learn as I go then, about the Digivolution Trees of other digimon. Oh well…
Then, he was alerted to his avatar noticing another such android right next to the so called “Evo-Navi, so he made his avatar turn to the NPC Lazy Miyuki and ask
“I seem to see two of these Navis behind that counter. You told me about one of them, but what’s the other one for?”
To that, the NPC Lazy Miyuki nodded and replied
“That one is called the Battle-Navi and it will teach you about both the basics and the advanced mechanics of Digimon Battles. Feel free to check it out if you haven’t been doing well in your battles lately. It is also useful for newbies like yourself since it will teach you the ins and outs of the subject…apart from that, it also has information about which Digimon relies on which stats most in combat.”
Faustein pondered the matter for a few minutes silently
I see, I am conversant with Digimon Battles, but surely, I can always improve my technique. I do believe it would be worthwhile to talk with those Navis.
With that in mind, he made his avatar thank the NPC Lazy Miyuki and then made his way towards the Navis behind the counter on the right side of the doorway. Once there, he had his avatar activate the auto-play program of each of the Navis in turn, first the Evo-Navi and then the Battle-Navi after which he listened to the recorded information while considering the information silently for several moments
Now then…Kotemon evolves to…Musyamon…and then to Asuramon after which it becomes Zanbamon…and it learns…Agumon and Veemon skill tree…says it requires machine tolerance training…ah, I see now…After Kotemon comes Patamon which…okay, Angemon…MagnaAngemon…Seraphimon…it needs strength and wisdom training most of all…this one is fairly standard…now for Renamon…
Here, the Renamon X interrupted him in a playful voice but in hushed tones as before
“Master, if you wanted to know about me, all you need to is ask, you know.”
As he heard that, he sighed while chuckling after which he retorted in kind
“I am starting to feel as though I am experiencing a kitsunetsuki…”
The Renamon X pretended to be scandalized by the comment and responded in a theatrical manner and turn of phrase
“Good heavens! So r00d, Master!! You’re such a heartbreaker sometimes, you know that?”
Faustein sighed once again as he saw her and brought the conversation back to reality
“Sure…that must be it, I am SUCH a dastardly villain….Anyway, jokes aside, it is imperative that we finish perusing this data and progress with the playthrough of the game, so I suggest we focus on the task at hand.”
Upon hearing that, the Renamon X pouted briefly before adopting a serious manner once more and responded
“Such a killjoy, you are…Oh well, I suppose you are correct. Whatever or whomever is behind these series of mysterious anomalies in the game is still at large.”

Faustein flashed her a bemused smile and then went back to reading the data given to him by the Evo-Navi
Renamon…needs training in strength, spirit, and defense, I see…and the Digivolution Tree is…Kyuubimon…then Taomon…then finally Sakuyamon…I see, wait…there’s one final version…Miko Mode eh? How quaint…
Then, he looked over the data on Digimon Battles given by the second Navi, the Battle-Navi
Attack Types… Attack Attributes… Technique Effects… Status Ailments…DNA forms…EXP…Skills…Well, that should about cover it. Holy Heisenberg, now that was long, but it was didactive so it was worthwhile as well.
After finishing a double check on the data screen before him, Faustein made his avatar close it and then look about to see what else there was left to do. Fortunately, his avatar was within range of the last important NPC in the location, so an arrow appeared before his avatar, pointing the way. Naturally, Faustein made his avatar follow it and consequently came across the NPC named Dr. Matsukado, an old scientist-like figure standing before an array of computer screens and typing on multiple keyboards simultaneously. Upon reaching him, as usual, the NPC program activated to play the recorded conversation sequence
“Hello there. You can switch the Digimon in your team with those in your PC by using the Lab’s Digimon Manager kiosk. Please remember this fact as it will become quite important later on.”
Then, Faustein watched as his avatar ran on auto-play and asked the NPC Dr. Matsukado about the Folder Bag and Card Battles. To that, Dr. Matsukado explained
“If you looking to obtain a basic Folder Bag and cards for Card Battles, you should visit the Yellow Cruiser building in the Central Sector of Asuka City. The Divermon there will provide you with a basic Folder Bag and your first few sets of cards, and Card Master Ken and Collector Luke will teach you the basics of Card Battles.”
There was nothing more to do in the Digimon Lab after this conversation ended, so Faustein made his avatar thank the NPC Dr. Matsukado and then exited the Digimon Lab into the Asuka City streets. There were many sights and sounds to take in at this point, signifying that the game was now in full swing. Interestingly enough, there was a popup message that appeared high up in the air above Faustein’s avatar with the label “Asuka City Streets”.
Now this feels more akin to a game world and it is such a convenient feature to have, I must say…
Faustein mused silently with a smirk before engaging in the first few steps of his exploration of the surroundings. He made his avatar walk about and talk to any and all NPCs who looked like they had some information to share with him. Among these, there were three of particular interest. The first was a male NPC named Masato who Faustein had seen next to an establishment known as Smith’s Shop
“Hey there, not sure what to aim for first? Well, your first major goal is to go east to Seiryu City and defeat its leader. However, I would advise that you prepare adequately for that eventual showdown since its leader is famous as a skilled combatant.”

When the ending dialogue choices appeared, as per usual, Faustein made his avatar thank the NPC Masato and then moved him over to the next of the three NPCs of note. This second one was a standard Agumon which had information on the city’s training spot.
“Hiya!! Looking to train those three digimon of yours? Then, you should head over to the Nanimon’s Digimon Gym over in that corner.”
Faustein was less than enthused about having to make his avatar’s digimon endure the ordeal of being trained by what was essentially a naked, spherical, and bearded body builder digimon, but obviously he had no choice in the matter since the game was designed that way.
Why? O ye Norns, why in the name of Heisenberg would you put me through such a harrowing experience? Thou art most cruel indeed to thine mortal subjects.
Grumbling silently in this manner, he watched as his avatar thanked the Agumon and then made him head over to the last of the three NPCs, this one being a standard Patamon
“What’s up, dude? Ah, a nice trio of digimon you have there. From what I recall, they have some intriguing Digivolution Trees…Of course, it is important to keep in mind that they will only ever be able to digivolve whilst in battle.”
The Patamon said with a shrug of his tiny shoulders/forelimb girdle and so Faustein made his avatar choose the “thank you” option again from the dialogue choices, thus ending the conversation program sequence. After that, since there were no more important NPCs in the streets, Faustein made his character look about to take note of the building and enter each one in turn. First on the list was Smith’s Shop beside the NPC Masato in which, upon entry, Faustein made his character look about in the attempt to trigger any NPC programs in the vicinity.
Uwaaah….SO many uber-COOL items and merchandise to buy and browse through here!! I can’t wait till I get my hands on all of them!!
Faustein felt his avatar’s nerdy thoughts come streaming into his mindscape and smirked as he thought to himself
You and I both, my digital incarnation…So then, there is the Armory…and next to that…the Pawn Shop, and finally, the Item Shop…Alright, I have committed these to memory so I can find this place any time later.
At that point, a pop-up exclamation mark had appeared, floating over the heads of one of the NPC kids who looked to be around his avatar’s age sitting in the small couch nearby. Needless to say, Faustein made his avatar head over to said NPC which then triggered her pre-recorded conversation sequence
“In the market for some weapons and armor, eh? Well, you ought to be able to find most of the easily available ones here.”
Then a set of dialogue choices appeared before Faustein’s avatar, giving him pause
I suppose that is only logical, after all, the playthrough has not been running for very long and thus those future weapon and armor choices would still be locked at present…
He mused silently for a few moments and then chose the last option
“I see, so then what about some of the other items then?”
To that the NPC girl replied after thinking silently for a few moments

“For those, you’ll have to go questing, participate in an auction, or defeat lots of enemies and hope you get a rare drop.”
That sentence apparently ended the conversation program sequence since the NPC fell silent after that. So, once again as before, Faustein made his avatar choose the “thank you” option and then headed out to the Asuka City Streets once again. Next, he made his avatar enter the Inn where he met a Guardromon NPC and Gatomon NPC on the first floor, with the Gatomon NPC being dressed in a typical nurse outfit. First, the Guardromon NPC was triggered into its conversation program which was punctuated by digital or robotic noises
“Welcome, traveler. Unit Name: Guardromon. Unit Function: Data Save & Back-Up. Query: Save game progress up to this point?”
It asked Faustein’s avatar, so of course to err on the side of caution, Faustein decided to make his avatar save his progress up till the current point. While this was occurring, the Guardromon’s conversation sequence was playing the next few messages with the usual beeping and other digital/robotic noises from before
“Acknowledged. Initiating Save Data protocol…Do not turn off the power to the console during this stage….Save Data protocol complete. Game Data saved to Slot 1 successfully. Congratulations.”
With that, that interaction sequence ended and this, in turn, triggered the Gatomon NPC’s conversation sequence
“Welcome, traveler. I am Nurse Gatomon and I provide a Digimon healing/resting service for an appropriate price. Since this is your first time using my service, it’s free of charge just this once. So, would you like to give your Digimon some rest to restore their HP and MP?”
Faustein thought about it for a few moments and his three digimon did not appear to be especially deficient in their respective HP and MP stats even after that battle earlier. Nevertheless, he decided it would be prudent to avail himself of the recovery service, especially since it was free of cost this time. With that, the game proceeded to a short cutscene wherein Faustein watched as the Nurse Gatomon treated his three digimon and restored their HP and MP in short order. The scene even had a short sound effect which, when taken together with the events in the scene, reminded him strongly of a similar recurring scene in a certain other monster collection and battle game franchise. The screen then faded to black and then refreshed a few split seconds afterward. Then, Nurse Gatomon resumed her conversation sequence
“Your Digimon have been fully healed and replenished their MP as well. Thank you for using my service, traveler.”
She gave him a brief bow and that ended the conversation and interaction sequence. After this, Faustein was alerted to his avatar noticing a flight of stairs which presumably led up to the upper floors of the Inn, so naturally, he had his avatar climb up, stopping first on the second floor. There, as before, Faustein made his avatar look and roam about in order to trigger any NPC interaction program sequences. Sure enough, one such NPC was activated, leading to a hailing sequence playing, with a distinct albeit whispering, shady information broker/salesman like tone/quality to it
“Psst…heeey kiiiid, yeah I mean you…looking for some rare items to trick out your Digimon?”

When Faustein heard that, he made his avatar turn in the direction of the voice and headed over to its owner. As would be expected, the voice belonged to a rather shady looking info broker/salesman NPC, this one being called “Chicago Verde”.
“Yeah, that sounds promising, so tell me more.”
Faustein made his avatar say, in response to which the NPC Chicago Verde responded
“Well, there is an auction of rare items that is rumored to be somewhere in town.”
Naturally, the dialogue choice Faustein made his character pick was
“Oh? Where is the location of this auction exactly?”
Sadly, the NPC Chicago Verde did not have any further details on the subject, so there the conversation ended, and then Faustein made his avatar go back to the first floor and take the ladder to the downstairs section. Then, he made his avatar exit through the doorway across from the ladder to enter the Lamb Chop, an establishment which functioned much like a bar and grill back in the real world. Upon entry, Faustein had found that he had activated the NPC owner, Master John, and his welcome conversation sequence
“Welcome to Lamb Chop, son! Take a seat and Waitress Debbie will be right along to attend to you! Thanks to her, this is a very popular place, and everyone is always eager to come here!”
The NPC owner, Master John, said in a booming, hearty voice to which Faustein made his avatar pick the middle dialogue choice
“Thank you, but I am actually here to ask about directions to the Underground Path. That and I wanna buy some bread to replenish some of my digimon’s stamina.”
The NPC owner, Master John, seemed to be a tad disheartened, but nevertheless gave the information that was requested of him. However, since Faustein had made his character purchase some bread, said NPC owner had seemed to cheer back up again.
Then, the conversation sequence ended, leaving Faustein to pursue the given directions. So, following the instructions given, Faustein made his avatar go back to the bottom level of the Inn and take the door next to the ladder this time. Sure enough, as predicted, he now found himself or rather his avatar standing in the Asuka City Underground Path. After noting the markers on the floating holographic area label that had popped up to mark the Underground Path as it had with the previous areas he had visited, Faustein made his avatar go to the right and then down the long ladder. The descent took his avatar into the Asuka City Sewers. After looking about, Faustein was alerted to his avatar noticing a flight of stairs leading to some lower level of the Sewers. Naturally, he controlled his avatar to go down the stairs and pick up the 300 BITS in the chest. Faustein smirked as he felt his avatar’s thoughts
Nice! This will give me a nice head start on equipment and items, since the 50 BITS I got from the Digimon Battle with Tamer Jigen just isn't going to cut it.
There was another chest across from his current location, but he could not have his avatar access that area, so Faustein mused silently after a few tries
I see, so then that area must require me to complete some preprogrammed event, defeat some boss, or perhaps obtain a certain item to unlock it. Ah well, there is no rush, I suppose.

After this brief reverie, Faustein controlled his avatar to go back to the Underground Path. This time, he decided to lead his avatar to the left side of the Underground Path and thus, he found his avatar entering the lower level of Asuka City. That, in turn, led off to the Central Sector of Asuka City where Faustein’s avatar encountered an NPC Guilmon and an NPC human called “Crazy Joe”. So, first, Faustein led his avatar to approach and activate the NPC Guilmon’s conversation sequence which required handing over some of the bread he had incidentally made his character purchase earlier
“Didja know? You can use HP Capsules or rest at an Inn to heal battle damage to those three digimon of yours.”
The Guilmon told his avatar, with his bat wing like ears fluttering and a happy expression on his face as he wolfed the given bread down. After that, the conversation ended with Faustein’s avatar thanking the NPC Guilmon. Then. Faustein made his avatar turn toward the NPC Crazy Joe in order to trigger his conversation sequence
“Heyo! Nice digimon trio you got there, pal. Looks like they have gained a little experience already, but the later battles will be tougher. Might want to think about buying some equipment for them. However, keep in mind that certain digimon can only equip certain weapons, armor, and items.”
With that, the NPC Crazy Joe’s conversation sequence ended, so Faustein watched as his avatar thanked him and then headed off into Asuka City Park nearby.
There, interestingly enough, were two more NPCs who apparently wanted to become digimon. The first of these NPCs was “Youngster Jake” and the other was “Grandma Beth”. However, that was not what had triggered his avatar to enter the Park. It was actually the sight of the previously mentioned Yellow Cruiser building with a giant bold, neon lit sign on its edifice. So, Faustein made his avatar enter the Yellow Cruiser building and as before, after entering, he controlled his avatar to look about to note the interior details. That motion resulted in the activation of the NPC Divermon’s conversation sequence with the usual floating exclamation point being seen over its head. So, Faustein made his avatar head towards the NPC Divermon and as he approached, it seemed that the Divermon NPC was working behind some counter and there was a glass case built into the counter. There were a variety of booster packs and theme decks displayed behind this glass case.
“Greetings, traveler. In the market for some cards, are you? Well, you’ve come to the right place then! To celebrate your first visit to my shop as customer, here have these two packs, on the house!!”
The NPC Divermon said as part of its conversation sequence which was activated by his approach and then handed Faustein’s avatar his Basic Folder Bag and startup card pack. Faustein watched bemusedly as his avatar geeked out over obtaining the first two packs free, but understood the sentiment as he felt his avatar’s thoughts seeping into his mind
Sweetness!! I scored some Chrome Digizoid cards already and these are just my first two packs!!
