Mandrake and Lothar walked side by side through the Eastern Timberlands. Shortly after the two of them succeeded in saving some digimon, including themselves, from a Xros General that was a slave trader Mandrake had dedigivolved back into Impmon. The two of them were now heading for a village near a lake to get some much needed rest.
"It seems though I have digivolved to Wizardmon two times and I still must not be ready to retain my champion form." the blue eyed Impmon known as Mandrake said as he tried to puzzle out why he had yet to retain his champion form. Perhaps he wasn't strong enough or maybe he wasn't quite old enough yet. After all, the first time he digivolved he did it because his life was in potential danger.
Picking up on his old friend's distracted state of mind, the muscular Elecmon known as Lothar reached out and placed his paw on Mandrake's shoulder. Since he had been walking on two legs since they got off the Trailmon a few miles ago, touching his friend's shoulder while walking was far easier for him to do than the average Elecmon. When Lothar's paw touched Mandrake's shoulder, the blue eyed Impmon turned his head to look his old friend in his concern filled brown eyes.
"Are you alright, Mandrake? You've been in that distracted state since we left The Forbidden Wasteland." Lothar said.
"I'm fine, old friend. I just have a lot on my mind when it comes to me being unable to retain my champion form." Mandrake answered with a sigh.
Removing his paw from Mandrake's shoulder, Lothar said "Don't worry, Mandrake. I'm sure you'll be able to retain your champion form soon. Being able to reach it is half the battle after all. Perhaps I'll digivolve soon as well."
"You're right, Lothar. I guess I should stop worrying about a process that happens eventually to all digimon." Mandrake replied with a chuckle as the two of them continued along to the village.
It was almost night by the time the two of them made it to the town. A large shimmering lake was visible in the light of the setting sun. Mandrake and Lothar began walking through the town looking for an inn. There were many rookies walking the streets with a few champion digimon here and there. Apparently higher level digimon didn't live in this small town and if they did there probably were not out at this hour. As the duo walked down the street a Raidramon limped up the street. His injuries weren't serious because his armor likely offered him protection from far worse damage. Which begged the question, what had happened to Raidramon and why were the townsfolk staring at the lake in fear?
"Come, Lothar. We should help him." Mandrake said as Lothar nodded in agreement. It was normal for Lothar not to talk to strangers unless he had to but he had been that way since they had become friends so this behavior wasn't strange to Mandrake. Focusing he channeled his energy hoping to digivolve but seemed to be unsuccessful. "Hmm, it seems I can't digivolve right now so I have no access to my healing magic."
"Don't worry, Mandrake. I have a first aid kit in the Ifini-Store you let me use as well as two thermal blankets." Lothar said as he pulled the first aid kit from the Infini-Store and walked over to Raidramon.
"Don't worry, Raidramon. My friend and I just want to treat your injuries." Mandrake said in a comforting voice.
Looking at Mandrake and Lothar warily, Raidramon sat down and said "Okay." Neither Mandrake or Lothar blamed Raidramon for being wary of strangers even in his injured state so they preceded to tend to him while avoiding making sudden movements that might of upset Raidramon. Soon Raidramon's wounds were treated and Lothar returned the first aid kit to the Infini-Store. Now Raidramon looked at them less warily and said "You didn't have to help me because my wounds were minor and would of healed by morning."
"It was no trouble, sir, but how did you get in such a state?" Mandrake asked. Lothar had to admit he wondered the same thing.
"I'll be glad to tell you but why don't you come and stay at my place. As mayor of this humble village it's the least I can do to repay your kindness." Raidramon said.
"My friend and I would hate to impose. Besides Lothar and I planned to stay at an inn tonight."
"I assure you it is no trouble at all. Makes it easier to explain what happened to me. Come, follow me." Raidramon said as Mandrake and Lothar followed behind.
Soon Mandrake and Lothar were at Raidramon's home and seated comfortably before Raidramon began his explaination. "The reason I was injured was because of the lake guardian."
"The lake guardian? That would explain why the townsfolk were looking at the lake in fear." Mandrake replied.
"I'm afraid so but it wasn't always that way. Not so long ago the lake guardian was a kind and gentle soul. She is a Seadramon named Serenity. Normally the only time she shows any aggression is when she is protecting the village from harm."
"Mr. Mayor, why would a normally gentle digimon start attacking you and the townsfolk?" Mandrake asked. He was worried about the innocent digimon in the town.
"I'm not sure. Serenity is the descendant of an ancient digimon known as Coelamon. Though this digimon species still exists today. This Coelamon was the first guardian of the lake. When he died his data became a digimental and the digimental is located in a small shrine not far from the lake. However none of the villagers have been able to lift it despite it being there for many generations."
"Could it be possible that an outsider to the village is the one destined to lift the digimental and, if so, is it possible to allow us to see the shrine and digimental?" Mandrake asked partly in curiosity and concern for the village.
The Raidramon thought for a moment before he replied "Maybe it was destined for an outsider so I don't see why you and your friend can't check it out. I'll even guide the both of you there but we'll have to be on guard in case Serenity attacks us."
Raidramon led Mandrake and Lothar out of his home and towards the lake. Soon they came upon a small shrine that looked like a variation of a tiny Shinto shrine with an alter. Sitting on the alter was what looked like a silver digimental with a fish scale pattern and what appeared to be claws along the sides. Lothar walked up to the digimental and tried to lift it off the alter but despite his strength the digimental didn't budge in the slightest. "Well I guess the digimental wasn't meant for me." Lothar said as he stepped back and turned to Mandrake. "Why don't you give it a try, Mandrake? You might be meant to wield its power."
Lothar had a point but then again maybe he wasn't meant to wield the digimental's power at all. It could have been meant for a villager that hadn't been born yet or even another outsider. There was no harm in him trying though since Lothar had given it a try. Just as he was about to approach the digimental he felt an unsettling presence which caused him to freeze on the spot and place a finger on each of his temples then close his eyes.
As he began reaching out with his telepathy, Lothar asked "Mandrake, what is it? What's wrong?"
"Shh, I sense something strange. It's as if there is a dark presence overlapping not just an approaching digimon but the whole lake as well." Mandrake said with a shiver overtaking his form. A short time later a Seadramon breached the surface of the lake with a roar.
"It's Serenity, the lake guardian." Raidramon said with horror in his voice.
"Too bad she doesn't seem so serene now." Lothar said with uncertainty in his voice even tough he dropped to all fours and spread his quills ready to fight.
"She isn't looking to serene for a reason. Look at her eyes." Mandrake said pointing at Serenity as both Raidramon and Lothar looked at the mentioned Seadramon. "See how blank her gaze is? She is under the influence of some form of mind control. If we fight her without dealing with who or what is controlling her the fight will not end well for either her or us." Lothar and Raidramon looked again at Serenity as Mandrake said "Keep her busy while I try to lift the digimental."
As Mandrake walked swiftly to the alter, Serenity roared and dove for Lothar. "Super Thunder Strike!" the muscular Elecmon yelled as electricity shot from his quills and flew towards the Seadramon's face. The attack only seemed to annoy Serenity as she roared in fury.
Meanwhile, Mandrake had reached out toward the digimental and lifted it off the alter. Gazing in shock as he felt the power coming from the digimental in his hands. The trick was how to channel it so he shouted to Raidramon "Mr. Mayor, how do I utilize the power of the digimental?"
Without taking his eye off Serenity, he yelled "The command to access the power is Digi Armor Energize." Serenity swung her tail at Lothar and Raidramon causing them to leap back and out of her way.
Deciding to try what Raidramon said he held out the digimental and said "Digi Armor Energize!" A light enveloped Mandrake and power ran through his body. "Impmon armor digivolve to Coelamon!" When the light cleared the ancient fish digimon Coelamon was lying on the ground. Tied around Mandrake's head fin was his scarf from when he was Impmon.
Mandrake felt that in this form he still was able to tap into his mental abilities and he placed a clawed flipper on each side of his head focusing his mind out toward the lake. Though there was no longer a second presence, there was something in the lake itself that was now controlling Serenity instead. "Lothar, Mr. Mayor, there is something in the lake controlling the guardian Serenity. Please hold her off until I deal with it." With that Mandrake pushed off the ground with his front flippers and launched himself into the lake. Serenity turned toward Mandrake only for Lothar to launch another Super Thunder Strike at her back causing her to whirl around at glare at the muscular Elecmon. It was as if his strikes only angered her.
"Mr. Mayor, you are capable of using electric attacks since you are a Raidramon. If we aim our attacks at the water, maybe we can stop the lake guardian before she hurts someone." Lothar said hoping that Raidramon would jump on board with his plan.
"But Serenity is the lake guardian. What if we accidently destroy her?" Raidramon asked with worry in her voice.
"Not if we use a fraction of our power. Then we can knock her out hopefully long enough for Mandrake to find what is controlling her." Lothar replied with a calm reasonable tone. Raidramon nodded as the two of them faced Serenity the Seadramon who was once again roaring with rage.
"Blue Thunder!" Raidramon yelled as blue sparks shot from the three spikes on his back and toward the water.
"Super Thunder Strike!" Lothar yelled as electricity blasted from his quills and toward the water.
The two attacks met in the water in front of Serenity causing the energy to surge through the lake guardians body and knock her out with her unconscious body falling over with half her body hanging out of the water.
"It's now up to Mandrake. I hope he finds that thing in the lake before Serenity wakes up." Lothar said as he looked out to the lake.
Meanwhile, in the lake, Mandrake was swimming under the water looking for the cause of the problem. All he knew was it was giving off a faint residual telepathic signature now and he was the only hope of finding it. Fortunately, his current form was quite adept in the water. Reaching out with his telepathic senses, which were sharper in this form than his rookie stage, he soon detected what he was looking for. Following his senses he swam until he spotted a black orb about the size of a basketball on the lake bottom. Charging his magic into the claws on his right front flipper he said "Fossil Bite!" The energy shot forth from his claws hitting the orb causing it to shatter into tiny fragments.
With the orb destroyed, Mandrake swam to the surface and crawled back onto land before dedigivolving back into Impmon. When he got back to Lothar's side, Serenity groaned as she pushed herself up. Opening her eyes, her gaze fell on the three digimon below her and asked "What happen? Last I remember I was looking for lunch?"
"I'm afraid you were under some form of mind control for about a week, Serenity. I can fill you in on everything. I'm just relieved you're back to normal. The rest of the village will feel the same when we tell them what happened." Raidramon answered.
"Are these two the reason I am back to normal, Mayor Raidramon?"
"The mayor was also very helpful in freeing your mind ma'am." Mandrake answered.
"Then on behalf of the whole village, I thank you three for your help." Serenity said with a bow as she floated out of the water and went into the village with Raidramon.
"Well, old friend, looks like the start of our vacation led to some excitement."
"That and your new found ability to become Coelamon may come in handy in the future, Mandrake." Lothar replied.
"That it may. I say we head back into the village since the trouble has ended so we can get the rest we came here for."
Lothar smiled as he and Mandrake headed back into the village to rest up.
