Both girls, but especially Jazz, seemed to be overwhelmed by Akemi’s adorableness. This particular digimon was not very different from the human Akemi they knew. Would it be the same case with Katherine? The Spaniard could not deny she was very curious about meeting the Shakomon. What type of digimon would she be? That being said, she was still very puzzled about the fact these digimon shared names with people she knew.
In any case! Three digimons left to find. Would there be a crystal for each of them or…?
While she mused about this, Magnus brought a question about this topic to Katherine. The green-eyed took out the two crystals from her yellow sweater's pocket to take a look at them. “When I solved the puzzle to get the first one, an earthquake happened. If there was also an earthquake this time, it definitely was not near us.” She made a pause to look at their surroundings. “Also, when I found the yellow one, we found… you. Then, with the second one, we found Akemi.” Her eyes shifted towards the Numemon for a second.
Then, Jazz posited the obvious inquiry. “Could it be… something in this place is making sure we find the crystals through saving your group?” That was an interesting theory, to complement Magnus’. Now, regarding the last puzzle blocking his Xros Loader’s signal…
“I’ve come to find many devices or abilities that can work like jammers, yes.” Katherine wrinkled her mouth, as she looked at her own digivice. “I don’t know what may be causing it in this specific scenario. However, that only backs up Jazz’s theory. If this thing is trying to avoid you evolving your way out of this mess, it means they really want us to find the crystals by solving the puzzles. If that’s the cas---“ Katherine interrupted her own sentence as she tripped on a rock.
“C-Careful.” Jazz managed to utter. The Spaniard would fall to the floor unless Magnus, the only one close enough to her to hold her before she fell, caught her. Considering how rocky this cave was (which meant an unstable floor texture), it was expected for something like that to happen. Jazz, who was several steps in front of Katherine by the time she stumbled, was able to see the crystals her tamer was holding flying through the corridor. She was quick enough to catch both of them seconds before they hit the ground and shattered. If she couldn’t catch Katherine on time, she would at least avoid these got damaged!
Hopefully, Katherine would be caught by Magnus. Getting your ankle sprain at a moment like this was certainly not ideal, after all. Jazz would hand the crystals back to her. Right after this, something else that was not ideal would happen. Another earthquake.
“A-Another one?” Out of nowhere? No. This wasn't a coincidence. Jazz’s eyes widened as she extended her arms to remain on balance. “N-N-No, no, no… wait! We weren’t trying to destroy them!” She shouted aloud, assuming this was being caused as a response to the recent incident. The crystal had almost been shattered, after all! Whoever was watching on them, couldn't be happy.
From the void above, a giant, roughly circular rock fell into the tunnel, right behind the group. Immediately, it started rolling forward. “Damn it!” Jazz shouted, as she jumped in front of the squad and swung her hammer towards the boulder, trying to shatter it into pieces. The result? Discouraging. Jazz was able to appreciate some type of purple energy engulfing the rock as it resisted the slam, still rolling forward.
Change of plans. “Let’s go!” The hog shouted while turning her back at the rock and picking Magnus, Katherine, and Akemi if she needed it, only to dash away from the incoming giant rock. Due to its gigantic size, as the boulder advanced, it made the roof collapse behind, destroying the corridor they had just transited. The sight of the next room at the end of the hallway brought some hope, as they seemed to reach their next destination. Once Jazz -carrying the group- entered, she would spot a giant cage by the end of the hall, right in front of the doorway the Cho-Hakkaimon had used to make her way into the room. A digimon seemed to be trapped inside of this cage, even if she was not quite able to tell what digimon it was. Could it be one of Magnus’ partners? Whoever they were, the creature was endangered by the giant rock coming behind Jazz, which would eventually reach the cage at this pace. That was, basically, the reason why the Cho-Hakkaimon decided not to jump to a side. If she did, sure, they would get out of harm's way, but would leave the digimon inside the cage to be crushed by the rock! Instead…
“Jump off!” She ordered the tamers to jump off her body to get themselves to safety, away from the path the rock was going to follow. Once they had, she would turn back towards the rock, a gust of wind raised from pure energy swirling around her body. The girl in the pig suit would lift both arms to try to stop the giant rock in its tracks. Would she succeed? Or maybe she would need some help? And… who was the digimon inside the cage? Hopefully, some answers were on their way!

Considering the nature of this endeavor, chances were that this trip underground would be fairly lengthy. Especially if one had into account the implications regarding the crystals and the effect they might have across their journey. The items themselves? They were fascinating. Their connection to these ruins was undeniable, just as the fact this place didn’t take too kindly to those being extracted from their resting spots.
“I have to wonder if actually taking those is a good idea, though. While their purpose makes me curious, nothing good has happened since we got involved with them.” Sure, the crystals’ relationship to Magnus’ partners was undeniable, but one had to ask if said relationship was worth pursuing. At least thus far, the brunette was more than doubtful about that one.
“Earthquakes?” That was something that, strangely, made sense. Seismic activity was what had been the trigger to this whole situation. And the crystals were inextricably linked to those events. Not a very exciting proposition, was it? Nonetheless, the lack of solid evidence towards that theory ultimately made his stance on the matter a little lukewarm. As long nothing tipped them off regarding the potential danger or lack of it the crystals had, Magnus ultimately had no problem letting them be for the time being.
“That theory is as good as any we've got right now.” he finally answered Jazz. “At least thus far they’ve been related. But our sample size isn’t big enough to know for sure. We’ll know eventually.” Akemi nodded at the statement. She was obviously distraught due to her sister’s absence, but seemed resolute regarding pushing forward in order to reunite with her. The fact that their ability to gather was hindered by an unknown factor was definitely a strange occurrence, but ultimately something they would have to deal with.
Before any kind of response could be issued, however, Katherine found herself in the receiving end of a pretty bad case of unstable footing and now risked both falling and crystals’ integrity. Magnus was quick to react and swiftly caught her; sadly, the Numemon X that had previously been held in between his arms wasn't as fast. The conclusion? While Kath was safe and without risk of injury, Akemi had been squished in between the two humans’ bodies. Not something she couldn't handle, of course! It just meant that a fair deal of goop splashed around, and probably ended up staining a good deal of the clothes involved in this process.
“S-sorry!” She exclaimed while scurrying towards a safer location. Luckily for them all, there was no time for her to feel any embarrassment; despite Jazz being successful at preventing the crystals from fracturing, whoever (or whatever?) held power over this place didn’t seem too entertained at the obvious close call. At the first rumble, the young man was already fearing the worst; a thick bead of sweat descended through Akemi’s face. If it weren’t for the evident peril that a giant boulder represented to the group’s well-being, the young man would have probably laughed at how epically Jazz had failed at destroying it. Alas, the only thing the group could do at the moment was to hold tight while the Cho-Hakkaimon whisked them to relative safety.
Safety might’ve been a bit of an overstatement, though; the humans —and at least Akemi, temporarily— had finally managed to escape collision course, there was now a cage they had to take care of, especially given that there was apparently a digimon confined inside! Could it be one of Magnus’ partners? Xros loader signal wasn’t helpful, and the digimon’s shape was shrouded by the shadows the room projected.
“Kemi, help Jazz hold the boulder, quickly!” Once again, Magnus operated his xros loader with practiced deftness, and soon enough Akem’s xrosed into Sagomon and in a quick motion, tried to help the pig-girl stabilize the rock. In the meantime, Magnus gave Katherine a look. “I don’t know if they’ll be able to remain like that forever. We should look for a way to rescue whoever’s inside the cage in case Jazz and Kemi can’t hold that thing for much longer.”
What were the tools they had around, anyway? Upon closer inspection to the relatively small chamber where the group was, Magnus could observe a simple crank that was connected to a series of pulleys that ended up in the suspended cage. “Maybe we can do something with that?” The male said, pointing at the mechanism before making haste to it. Of course, noticing it and actually operating it were two very different tasks, and at least for the time being, the crank wasn’t budging.
Another quick glance was aimed at the curly-haired female. “Katherine, can you check if there’s anything else in this room? I feel like we’re missing a piece of the puzzle to lift down this thing.”
Hopefully, they’d find it before Akemi and Jazz's position was overrun.

There was no doubt Magnus was right about how everything they could muster right now was only theories, considering they didn’t have enough pieces of evidence to build an understanding of what could actually be happening here. No one seemed to have any doubt, however, that something was causing these earthquakes at specific times.
Just like the one that had caused Katherine to squish Akemi. “Thank you.” The Spaniard sighed, right before noticing her body clashing with Magnus had made the Numemon see her regular form (already dubious itself) altered. “Eek!”
Not like there was a lot of time to worry about that, though. The whole situation had advanced into Jazz, the Cho-Hakkaimon, and Akemi, the Sagomon, trying to stop the giant boulder going towards the cage. It did seem to be working though! Although they haven’t managed to stop the rock completely on its tracks, it had certainly slowed down. However, that purple mist engulfing the boulder was still there, kind of like regulating the force it moved with to surpass Jazz and Akemi’s resistance. Both the Cho-Hakkaimon and the Sagomon would start to be pushed back slowly as the rock seemed determined to crush that cage. Katherine and Magnus had to find a way to get whoever was inside that cage out of it, quick!
The Spaniard would stand up without even dusting herself up while her green irises explored the whole room for anything that could make that crank work! What would catch her attention immediately was a small rectangle, kind of like a picture engraved into the wall, with a series of writings in digimoji. At the top of it? A shiny, pink gem. “Another one.” She muttered as she rushed towards the engraving, which was located some several meters to the left of the crank Magnus was trying to operate.
To the sides of the picture, two giant panels, which seemingly could be pressed in like giant buttons, remained. But Katherine couldn’t read digimoji and Jazz was busy! What was she supposed to do with these!?
“Magnus…!” The Spaniard nervously shouted, her green eyes going to the brown-haired man in front of the crank. “Do you happen to know digimoji?” Maybe they could exchange places if that was the case. “There are two giant buttons here, but I have no clue on what to do with them. There’s a gem up top, so this is certainly a puzzle… but everything is in digimoji!” If her partner in this task didn’t know digimoji at all or didn’t have any way to translate this, maybe he could have an idea on how to wing it.
He seemed to be good at that… right?

While some less-than optimal scenarios couldn’t be avoided, there wasn’t a lot of time to dwell on such matters. Right now, the situation was critical, and that meant some fast thinking was in order! Jazz and Akemi would probably not be able to hold for very long, after all; to say the least, the effect of that purple mist seemed to be fairly worrisome.
After scanning the remaining half of his room and failing to find anything else of note, he heard Katherine’s call; he turned instantly, then made haste to her position. To say the least, however, he wasn’t quite prepared for the following question. He stared at the girl for an idle moment, and after resisting the urge to ask ‘What in tarnation is digimoji?’, he proceeded to look at the symbols that were… pretty much the equivalent of digimon’s hieroglyphics.
After a brief glance, he shook his head. “Not gonna lie here, Katherine; I have no idea. But we might be able to figure out their meaning through their context.” Of course, that was something way more easily said than done. Time was scarce, and they had little to no room for error. To say it in few words, they had to think fast, make some accurate conjectures, and also have quite a bit of luck if they pretended to come out alive. Brain working on overdrive, the brunette gazed ahead and pushed one of the panels with some urgency.
Nothing happened. After quickly making sure that statement was absolutely correct, Magnus pressed the other panel. What happened afterward was fairly surprising; another panel emerged at the opposite wall; this one had a single panel however. Another look was given at the strange symbols, even though as soon as Magnus retired his hand from the panel he was pressing, the other panel disappeared. An idea illuminated the male’s face; at least if what he thought he read was correct, they could get outta this situation if they did things right!
“If what I think I’m reading is correct, there’s four sets of panels like this one.” He explained as quickly as he could. “Two have two panels; this one and another one. The other two have a single panel that unlocks the next panel if pressed. My guess is that we need to unlock the four panels and then press the secondary panels at the same time, but the problem is that the primary panels must be all up at the same time and we’re only two people. We need to find a way to keep them pressed as we move to the others.”
They couldn’t count on Jazz or Akemi, else everyone would get crushed, so they had to resort to their wits. For a second, he balanced his Xros Loader in between his hands. It was probably heavy enough to keep the panel pressed, but it lacked surface…
It was only then when an idea illuminated his head! Quickly, he began to remove one of his shoes, he introduced his digivice inside and tested if that was enough to keep it stuck to the panel. “Well, that’ll do for now. I don’t know how many panels we can keep pressed, but our ending positions should be the panels with two actions. Hopefully, once we solve that small puzzle, we’ll be able to operate the crank. We should move fast.”
With some luck, that’ll work. Jazz and Akemi didn’t look like they’ll hold for much longer.

“He’s right.”
“Eeek!”
From behind Katherine, a deep, grim, voice resonated. Said voice came from the materialization of a dragon-like creature that floated over her head, kind of like a spirit coming from her back. Although taken by surprise at first, Katherine was able to quickly recognize the creature after turning to see it. “J-Jaenryu…” The Spaniard muttered, her green eyes going to Jaenryu and then shifting for a second towards Jazz, who still seemed to be having a hard time with that rock, although aided by Akemi.
“Jazz sent me as quick as she could.” The dragon noted. The semi-spiritual being had a bright, orange color. Almost as if it was made of pure fire. Although Jazz had told her a lot about him, the times Katherine had directly seen Jaenryu interact with them, since he appeared during that gruesome battle against Void at the alley (a story saved and told by the same narrator that told Magnus’ story, btw), were scarce. It was true, however, the Cho-Hakkaimon had won a lot more control over Jaenryu over time, so it was a good thing she could use him to lend a hand on any task.
In any case! No time to dwell too much on Jaenryu’s manifestation. “He’s our friend.” Katherine’s explanation was brief enough to ensure Magnus knew this was an ally. That should be enough.
“That was an excellent interpretation, young man.” The dragon noted, looking at the human with his yellow, bright eyes. “Do have in mind, however, that all of the panels must be kept pressed at once so you can proceed with operating the crank.” Oh. Of course. Jeanryu could read digimoji.
“Right.” Katherine nodded, taking off her backpack. “You can help us, right?”
“As long as I’m close enough to you and Jazz, I can materialize; so yes, I should be able to aid you in this.”
No time to lose, then! Katherine rushed towards the single panel that had appeared after Magnus’ shoe kept one of the two panels from before pressed. This one was on the other side of the room. The Spaniard dropped her backpack over the panel, pressing it down too. Just as expected, a new panel appeared at the other side of the room where the first set of two panels and the crank were. Immediately, Katherine jolted there too.
“Jaenryu!” She now ordered the dragon to materialize and press the button. He did just that. The final set of two panels appeared and, again, Katherine rushed towards them. Okay. Almost there. Three panels left to be pressed. What else was heavy enough for them to push these, though?
The Spaniard took the two crystals out of the pocket of her sweater and stared at them in her hands. She shrugged and looked above, almost as if she was talking to an entity that she knew was there, but they couldn’t really see. “Well, you’re already quite mad anyway, aren’t you?” She asked aloud puffing her cheeks a little bit and glaring for a second at the gigantic rock in the room trying to crush their partners. “Magnus!” The Green-eyed just threw the green crystal with all of her strength, making it fly across the chamber and towards Magnus. Whatever was bullying them wouldn’t like this, probably.
Then, Katherine would place the yellow-colored crystal on one of the two panels in front of her. This was the last of the panels they had to keep pressing for the other two panels to work. These two panels were the only two that were left to be pressed, one was the partner of the panel Magnus had pressed with his shoe and the other one was part of the pair in front of Katherine now.
So! Every panel had to remain pressed for someone to be able to operate the crank, right? Magnus would do the cranking, so he couldn’t be pressing any panel at the moment. Hopefully, he had caught that green crystal being thrown at him to use on his last panel. Katherine, on her side? Would just jut herself upwards, over the panel, and sit on it. “This one is pressed!” She exclaimed with her rear well put on the giant button.
Magnus had to do the rest.

Surprises were surely abound this time around; to say the least, Magnus hadn’t really expected for a dragon-like entity to just manifest itself and leisure agree with what he was saying. Alas, this was seldom the strangest thing that had occurred to the male in recent times; heck, it was probably not even the hardest thing that had happened while they were underground.
“Aren’t you just full of surprises?” He could definitely have appreciated Jaenryu’s appearance before he had to make any possibly lethal misconjectures regarding their current predicament. In any case, it was a relief that he had more or less guessed right.
“Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially if everything has to be pressed at the same time.” That was enough for conversation, though; they had to hurry if they wanted to come out alive from this. The brunette readied himself, then nodded at Katherine’s call as he realized what her plan was. Making sure he didn’t miss her mark, he proceeded to safely catch the green crystal, even though that seemed to make the boulder spin even faster and with a lot more force than before.
“P-Please, hurry!” Akemi called out, her voice clearly strained. “I-I don’t know if w-we’ll be a-able to hold th-this for m-much longer!”
The urgency of the situation was undeniable; Magnus wasted no time and made sure to keep both his buttons pressed firmly before making one final dash towards the crank and lowering the cage to an acceptable height. “Katherine, get away from the boulder’s path. Jaenryu, please retrieve whatever’s inside. Jazz and Akemi should let go of the boulder at my mark!”
If everything went as planned, everyone would be out of danger and the boulder would merrily follow its course to wherever it wanted. Magnus would breathe a sigh of relief as he plopped on the floor. Akemi, on the other hand, would promptly devolve and take a seat on his lap; the exertion was clear in her face, and the poor Numemon X seemed very tired.
“That was really close, wasn’t it?” He mentioned as she patted his partner’s head. Had everything else been successful, Jaenryu would’ve gotten a cyan egg that was decorated by strokes of various shades of blue. It wasn’t one of the male’s missing partners, but… it seemed somewhat related to him in a sense. At least for the time being, both Akemi and himself stared at it intently. “So… is everyone okay? That was pretty intense.”
“I-I’m fine.” Akemi responded, rather meekly, yet somewhat disappointed at the same time due to the fact they hadn’t found any friendly face after the attempt. “I p-probably wouldn't b-be able to feel m-my limbs, if I had a-any.”
One thing was for sure, despite this place’s best efforts at trying to kill the group, they had managed to survive yet another time. Magnus could only wonder if the close calls would keep on happening, and if their luck would eventually run out if that was the case.
Hopefully it wouldn’t come to pass.

While still remaining well-sit on the giant button, Katherine’s eyes would widen upon seeing Magnus take control of the situation and issue the necessary orders for the rest of the squad. Although at first, the man didn’t strike her as a leader, it was when the situation utterly demanded him to be in charge that he took control. In any casuistic, she guessed this was the minimum one could ask from a Xros General, a tamer that had to keep many digimon under his metaphorical wing.
Sadly, there wasn’t much time to admire Magnus’ leadership skills, as everyone had to move quickly. Thankfully, since the hardest part of the process had been taken care of, the group was able to go through the necessary motions with relative easiness and, once everything was said and done, they were all safe. It was worth mentioning, however, that both Jazz and Akemi had been at the most stressful and demanding end of the whole situation.
The purple energy swirling around the boulder would disappear when Magnus operated the crank and the egg was put at safety by Jaenryu. Although the egg itself wasn’t too big, the bars of this cage were specially built very close to one another, so it would have been impossible for the dragon to retrieve the egg through the bars before the crank was operated and the cage lifted. Once Jazz and Akemi had jumped out of the way on time, the rock would just move forward as a regular giant boulder and crash against the wall. The shaking it would produce, although mild, would be enough for a small, shiny item, to be unclogged from the pillar Katherine was previously sitting on. The sound would catch the Spaniard’s attention.
“I-It is not a digimon.”
Katherine was a bit disappointed when approaching the group and seeing what the dragon spirit had brought, honestly. This only meant there were still 3 of Magnus’ partners missing and probably more bullying for this thing to enforce on them!
“You… really… wouldn’t!” Jazz, who very much had limbs, would confirm Akemi’s suspicion, panting and letting herself fall on the floor to rest.
“It seems like we are. It was very intense, though.” Katherine, who had been the one put under less physical pressure from the whole group this time, could only wonder what else could be expecting them. The Spaniard took out a bottle of water from her backpack and leaned down to offer it to Magnus. “Here.” Accompanying the gesture, a kind smile was drawn on her lips.
In her right hand, the green-eyed was holding a pink crystal shard. “We have three now.” She noted, gladly taking the green one back if Magnus decided to give it to her.
“Had you seen that egg before?” Katherine asked. She wrinkled her mouth while her eyes shifted to the solitary egg Jaenryu had placed on the floor. She took the time to study the thing a bit more closely. Was it a digiegg? Was something going to be born from it?
Was it time to make their way to the next room? Did they even have another choice?

The whole deal had been pretty intense, hadn’t it? It was a good thing that everyone could catch a breather before continuing, even though the situation seemed a tad aimless as of right now. But, that was a worry for later; as of right now, everyone was just trying to get their bearing backs.
“Well, I guess that’s not a complete disappointment, at least. It’d have been far worse if the cage was just empty and we had risked our lives for naught.” It was evident that Magnus was a half-full glass type of guy. In the meantime, Akemi looked at Jazz a bit worriedly.
“Are y-you injured? I can t-try healing y-you if you a-are.” Even if Katherine was a tad scary, Akemi had grown to like Jazz quite a bit; maybe it was a product of sharing the same dangers, but she felt naturally drawn to the Lopmon. Quite interesting, wasn’t it?
As things stood, however, everyone could bring themselves to calm down a bit and relax; everyone had played their part and this victory had been earned through their combined efforts. “We were a pretty good team, weren’t we? I’m glad we could make it out without anyone getting injured.” With a calm smile, the brunette accepted the water offered to him and began slowly sipping from it.
All in all, the group was well on their way to uncover the mysteries hidden in this underground structure. Maybe the egg was related to those? It certainly looked familiar enough that Akemi found herself staring at it after the young woman’s question. “I t-think I’ve seen it b-before.” She said idly, somewhat enraptured with the patterns adorning the oval-shaped object.
However, before further comment could be uttered regarding the egg, a crashing sound coming directly from above the group began to grow louder and louder until it became very obvious it was about to reach them; it culminated into something crashing into the ceiling of the room where the foursome was located and leaving a small crater in the ground below. It kicked up a small cloud of dust, but it suddenly revealed herself as… a Penmon.
“I can’t believe you were having fun without me!” She said, completely serious. “Somebody decided to imprison me inside a cage or something, but I broke out by using a hair clip and a glass of water! I didn’t count on the entire thing exploding though…”
Without a doubt that was none other than Miyu. Half expecting the whole deal, half in disbelief, Magnus approached her. “Welp, can’t believe you’re actually the real deal. You fine, Miyu? That sounded like it hurt a bit.”
“Yep! Don’t worry about me. I’m naturally resistant to explosions, you know?” If Akemi could sweat, she’d definitely do so at the statement. But that wasn’t something that mattered for now.
“Th-that’s a relief. H-have you seen t-the others. Miyu?” Considering how that was their current goal, it was possible that maybe they had been confined together? That’d def cut some time from their searching.
“Nah, nowhere t’be seen.” Miyu seemed pretty nonchalant about the whole deal. “Thought they were with y’all honestly. Guess that wasn’t the case, even tho you found some new buddies! Who are they?”
Oh, yeah. Right. Katherine and Jazz were still here. And Jaenryuu too! Well, maybe. Magnus wasn’t so sure about how he worked; maybe something to be asked later. In any case! “Oh, right. Katherine, Jazz, this is Miyu; I talked to you about her before, but I guess it’s time for you to meet her.”
Of course, the digimon was pretty smug about the whole deal. “Oh, I see I’m famous! That’s nice! Please t’meetcha! I’m Miyu, and I’m the coolest Penmon you'll meet in maybe ever!”
Quite the development, considering the suddenness of the whole situation, but that’s how things were. Probably some greetings were required before they could advance their quest in earnest.

When hearing Akemi’s offer, Jazz reincorporated a little and looked at the Numemon with a glow in her eyes. “You have healing skills?” That was quite awesome. However, the Cho-Hakkaimon shook her head. “Don’t worry, though. I’m not injured, just… tired. But I’d definitely love to see you do some healing in the future! It sounds super awesome.”
Katherine, meanwhile, had her own portion of the exchange with Magnus. “I’m not disappointed.” She clarified. “I just thought whoever was doing this was trapping your partners to make us go through the process of recovering the crystals.” The Spaniard added with a pensive expression, putting her hand below her chin. “However, if we go by that same logic, it’d still mean this egg is important for you or your team. Or at least this… thing consider it to be.” It was then when she heard Akemi mention she had seen it before. Katherine’s eyes widened as she turned to the Numemon. “You have?”
Solving mysteries was just one of the most fulfilling experiences for those with Undying Curiosity, after all.
However, there wouldn’t be much room for Akemi to answer, as something crashed into the room from the roof above!
What had entered the room was a Penmon that, according to what she had explained, seemed to be the digital reincarnation of Angus MacGyver. This couldn’t be a coincidence, right? Was this their second reward for solving this puzzle?
So her name was Miyu. Just like Magnus had said earlier.
Why. WHY DID ALL OF THESE DIGIMON HAVE NAMES FROM GIRLS KATHERINE KNEW, INCLUDING HERSELF?
A figurative clear of throat. The curiosity triggered inside Katherine would have to wait. But she would get an explanation for this. Somehow. Probably.
Both the girl and the hog’s attention was brought back to the present, as Magnus introduced them to Miyu. It was then when Katherine was overwhelmed by the fact this digimon was… extremely cute.
The Spaniard crouched to shake the Penmon’s wing, with her eyes shimmering from the sheer adorableness it bestowed. She had seen a similar species in the past (a certain narrator of races accompanied by a Ranamon) but, for some reason, this one just looked so much cuter!
“Nice to meet you, Miyu.” She nodded. “I’m sure you are.” A giggle.
“Aye, aye.” Jazz nodded, too. “It’s great to have you joining us. Don’t worry, I’m sure there’s still a lot of fun to be had!” Hands on her hips, the Cho-Hakkaimon smiled. “Do you remember how did you get to that cage? Did you just appear inside after you were separated from the group?"
Another digimon and still no further information? She hadn’t seen their host or any of the other digimon they were looking for? It did feel like, although they were making some type of progress, mysteries were not unfolding at all, and they were only dwelling further into this thing’s den. Was the end near?
Katherine folded her arms, her green eyes going to Magnus for a moment. “So… how many of your partners do we still need to find? I think you mentioned at least one more, right?” Then, she looked around the room, probing for the next pathway to follow. Was there any type of doorway, or should they come back from where they came from with the rock? Or… maybe going up?

Was it that surprising? Akemi herself wasn’t sure about it, even though she certainly looked fairly satisfied at the sudden influx of attention going her way. “Y-Yes. I-Is that weird?” Akemi didn’t know a lot about Numemons, but if she could do it… how hard could it possibly be? It wasn’t like it took her too much effort or anything. “Th-thanks, though.”
Katherine’s words did make sense, all things considered. It was a possibility that Magnus’ partners had been kidnapped by some invisible force, that was also whatever was in charge of this admittedly strange place. That theory, however, wasn’t completely debunked, especially considering the egg’s circumstances; the girl herself seemed to be on the right track regarding possible theories. “I think that’s not unlikely. I wonder why whatever’s doing this is doing this, though.” Akemi’s statement regarding the egg’s familiarity confirmed such a theory. But, before any following statements could be made regarding that, Miyu entered the scene in a pretty… dynamic way, so to say.
Flipper shaken, Miyu seemed pretty peepy at the whole deal. At least compared to Akemi, she seemed a lot more relaxed in situations like this one! She looked around, very curious about the kind of situation that had enveloped everyone mere moments ago. “That sounds lovely! I’d be pretty bummed if I had missed all the fun already, especially after such a daring escape! It’s a pity that nobody was there to watch it, or better yet, film it! I’m sure it was almost worthy of a televised series, or something!”
That aside, she shook her head in negation at the following question. “I just remember the cave-in and waking up in a cage. It was pretty weird! Especially the digimons that were around me; they looked like small rotund rocks with a single yellow eye! I don’t even know what they were there for, even. They seemed pretty useless overall and didn’t really do anything of note at preventing my escape. They were talking about a ‘core’ tho! Maybe it’s where at least one or two girls are? I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest!”
Magnus did some pretty quick maths before answering the question asked on his way. “Katherine, Mai, and Sasha are still missing, so that’d be three left. I hope we can find them soon, but things should begin to pick up now that we’ve gotten Miyu, right? She’s pretty good at tracking and stuff.”
Miyu herself puffed up her chest, looking very proud at those words. “Of course! Our next destination should be the so-called ‘core’. If we get there, maybe we’ll find everyone! Or maybe not. Who knows, really!”
The Penmon’s happy-go-lucky attitude made Magnus sweatdrop, but that was fine. “I guess that’s as good an idea as any. Know where that so-called ‘core’ is?”
A fairly obvious response ensued. “Nope! But if we walk enough, we might get to it.”
Least to say, the urge to facepalm was barely resisted as the brunette gazed at the rest of his companions. “Do you think that we’ll have a better shot by going to where Miyu was previously? It kinda defeats the purpose since she just freed herself, but it might be worth a shot? Then again, any enemies we’ve found thus far were less than cooperative, so…”
It was a pretty dicey situation. Maybe in the need of the girls’ input, even though at the end of the day they probably were at the mercy of lady luck.
What a vexing situation.

Even if Miyu’s memories about this whole ordeal were reduced, they were certainly bringing some new information to the table. “So there are more digimon in here?” Katherine brought her hands to her hips, tilting her head. That was fairly interesting!
“Small, rotund rocks with a single yellow eye…” She muttered, bringing her other hand to her chin. “… Yes. I doubt that’s a coincidence. I think we might be coming up to something.”
“Huh?” Jazz looked at her tamer with a curious expression.
“I saw those things. They were engraved on the first plate we found when we came in. The one I was studying when you found Magnus, in the room where we got the first crystal.” The Spaniard made a pause, trying to remember this object as well as she could. “I couldn’t tell if they were digimon, honestly. Much less I thought they could still be around.” The green-eyed raised her head, looking rather pensive. “They were part of a much more complex piece of antique art. They seemed to be gathered around something or someone. Now that I know they're living beings, I could infer they were adoring it.”
The Cho-Hakkaimon took a moment to study her surroundings again. “So this is their home…” She mused. “Maybe they were adoring this ‘Core’ thing.”
Katherine then quickly gazed towards the Penmon. So Miyu was good at tracking stuff? Good! “I agree. This ‘Core’ is the only clue we have so far, so finding it should certainly bring some more clarity into the matter.”
… Not so good. Miyu had no idea how to find this thing! So much for those tracking skills. Not like it mattered a lot, though. Right now they were pretty much hostages of a strange entity controlling this place, who led them to do what they needed of them by threatening their lives. “If anything, this thing driving us around might redirect us to go wherever they want us to go in our way there so… there’s not a lot to lose. If this thing wants us to solve this thing while we find all of Magnu’s partners in the process, we’ll do just that, then.”
“They might be up for a surprise if they try to get rid of us once we comply.” Jazz shadowboxed while she uttered these words. She was ready!
Katherine nodded before turning her head towards Magnus and then lifting it to study where Miyu had come from. “According to Miyu, those things do talk, so maybe we can somehow communicate to them. I have the feeling we’ll be facing our last task before we could get a lot of explanations, though.” Not much to do about that, anyway. “So we should go… up?”
The hole was, however, too small for Hippogriffomon to fit through it, which made Jazz unable to provide assistance as conveyance. “Any clue on how to do that, though?” The Spaniard wrinkled her mouth. It was quite a dicey task to accomplish, considering the size of the hole and… well, gravity.
Jazz frowned as she looked at the ceiling. “Hey! We want to go talk to your friends and get this over with. Help us get to the next crystal and we’ll get it for you!” She demanded aloud.
Was something going to happen next? Or would they have to think about how to go through that hole on their own?
Given, except for what Akemi had shown so far, Katherine didn’t know the skills of Magnu’s army. Maybe they had something beneath their sleeves for this type of situation?

Miyu nodded energetically at was evidently a rhetorical question. A question was a question, right? Meant to be answered, and stuff. In any case, it seemed like the reveal had brought a semblance of insight to Katherine, at least regarding the bigger picture of what could be happening in these strange ruins.
Magnus seemed fairly pensive regarding this development. “So, do you think that there’s a cult of sorts worshipping whatever this ‘core’ is? How are we related with what’s happening here, then? And, why would they imprison my partners like this?” Chances were that, obviously, Katherine didn’t have the answer to those queries; nevertheless, Magnus couldn’t help asking them. What they had to do, however, was pretty clear; even though a lingering question resonated within Magnus’ headspace.
How would they find this so-called ‘Core’? As far as they knew, Miyu had some very vague clues about its specific location, but was her information trustworthy enough? It was hard to tell, but Katherine seemed to agree with her. “I guess we don’t really have much of a choice, do we? Ready to move forward, Kemi?”
The Numemon X nodded just as Magnus stretched up a bit. “Upwards seems like the only logical choice. Think you can clear the path, Miyu? I don’t know how much of a path we have there.”
Understandably, Jazz’s words would fall on deaf ears as Miyu readied herself and nodded. “Of course! Who do you think I am? This will be done in a jiffy.” From one moment to the next, an icy path began to ascend upwards, pretty much reminiscent of a staircase… made out of solid ice, that is. “There you go! This should get us to the intermediate floor, just under where they had incarcerated me! Probably the safest place to go, even though I can’t know what we’ll find there!”
Happy-go-lucky enough, really. What could possibly go wrong? The path ahead was mostly clear, even if a bit on the uneventful side. Just like Miyu had said, at the end of their trail, a small, path-like in-between extended itself forward between the two main floors. Maybe some kind of ventilation pathway? Hard to know, but mighty handy nonetheless. Once everyone reached that place and the makeshift staircase melted away, Magnus would then address Katherine and Jazz. “So, our options are fairly limited here. We don’t know what’s above us, except that it’s highly likely hostile and they might have digimons captive. Only with Kemi and Miyu, my team can’t scout effectively. Can your mons take care of that, or should we take a more direct approach to the matter?”
Granted, thus far Katherine’s team hadn’t shown any aptitude for stealth or recon, but his peer had proven to be full of surprises, such as with Jaenryu. Maybe she had more tricks under her sleeve regarding that detail.

“I would be… almost certain. Yes.” A hand on her chin, Katherine reflected on the matter. “My original assumption was that this thing was imprisoning your partners to make you go look for them and retrieve the gems.” Of course, this was just a simple theory.
That being said, the good news was that Miyu had some way of going up. She had deployed a path of ice to their goal, which was gladly welcomed by the group. Katherine held tight to the back of Cho-Hakkaimon/Jazz to gain stability as the group went on. They would arrive at an intermediate floor that was between where the Penmon had been trapped all of this time and where they were before. It didn’t look too different from the floor below, though.
The Spaniard explored her surroundings, her green eyes trailing around. She listened to Magnus closely, considering the possibilities of recon. “I mean, those things don’t sound too strong from what Miyu explained. I’m sure we can take them!” Jazz noted.
“If they are as resistant as the digimon from before, it may be an issue. Furthermore, I don’t think it’s a good idea to engage in combat here.” Katherine replied, still looking quite pensive. “Jazz is particularly skillful when it comes to stealth, as she was raised in that environment. However, I don’t know think she has any recon skill in her repertoire.” She admitted, turning toward Magnus. “I know your power is limited, considering most of your partners are not even with you, so I wish I could offer more than pure firepower.”
The tamer took out her digivice and cards from her sweater and turned towards Jazz. “That being said…” A white light cocoon engulfed Jazz again, as she turned into the blonde warrior from before, who was significantly smaller than the girl in the pig suit. From a sleeve full of cards, Katherine took a single one and showed it to Magnus.
“Chameleon Cape” was the name of the playing card.
“This will allow a digimon to mimic the environment around it and become almost invisible. It is a good way of getting into the room where these creatures are and remaining undetected. You know, to see what they’re up to.” The Spaniard noted, extending it to her peer. “Can your Xros Loader process cards? Do you want to use it on one of your partners, or would you like me to use it on Jazz?”
They had a single tool to offer in order to develop a plan to work around, and it was clear Katherine wanted them to build said plan together, using all of the elements at their disposal.
Katherine was aware that, If the entity driving them around had any way of communicating with these things, they’d probably let them know that they were there, breaking their cover. However, she was almost certain this wasn’t the case. This thing couldn’t speak to those things or they simply couldn’t understand them. Otherwise, it would have gotten them to find the crystals for it.
Their goal was right above, Katherine and Jazz had chipped in with their contribution and it was now Magnus’ turn to help them elaborate a strategy, as well as Miyu’s turn to recap how had she gotten from the floor above to this intermediate floor below, in order for them to go up.

“I see.” Magnus nodded at Katherine’s words. “I wonder why this ‘thing’ would need my partners in order to get the crystals instead of just acquiring themselves though. I suppose that's what we're supposed to find out, even though I’m satisfied with just getting all my girls back.” Katherine, Sasha and Mai were still out there somewhere. And the brunette wasn’t going anywhere before finding them.
While knowing what they were up against had been Magnus first thought, Jazz had presented a fair point. If Miyu alone was able to escape them, how hard could it be to overpower them? “Well, actually!” Miyu found it opportune to intervene. It was probable she had embellished her story a little bit. “I actually waited ’til the only useless digimons were around in order to attempt my escape. In truth, there’s a lotta more stuff from where I came from, so I don’t think that charging is a smart idea.”
Magnus raised an eyebrow, even though Akemi was the first one to react to the Penmon’s deliberate information hiding. “A-And you thought that m-mentioning th-that just now w-was smart!?” She was a bit angry regarding it, that was for sure. “G-Geez, Miyu!”
What did the Penmon do? She just winked at everyone present with a big smile on her face “Te-hee.” Well; just like Katherine had explained, engaging into combat was an extremely bad idea at the moment, given they weren’t even sure of what they would encounter once they reached the upper chamber. At least the raven-haired girl had a backup plan that was more liable to work than blindly rushing in. Curious eyes peered the car that Katherine had brought out; it was a tad embarrassing, but Magnus hadn’t ever seen one of those.
“I’m… not really sure on how to use those, frankly. Not familiar with them.” Not to say, that at least at plain sight, there wouldn’t be anything to slash the card into in the male’s Xros Loader. “I think you’ll have to handle that one. Don’t think I can provide a lot of help in that regard.”
It was very awkward, but they were in the more-than-capable hands of CefiroDarcmon, at least as scouting and execution were concerned. Regarding the actual plan, however? He was more than able to chip in. “We probably need to know the exact numbers of what we’re fighting against, and if Katherine, Sasha or Mai are there. We don’t really know if they’re guarding them or something else, so we have to make sure we’re attempting to rescue them before committing. If we find Sasha, I can DigiXros her with Miyu in order to gain a bit more of firepower, and if we find Katherine, we’ll get another combatant of Akemi’s caliber. That’d be the best-case scenario.” She wouldn’t mention that Mai was probably the worst outcome regarding who they could find, even though that was fairly obvious to guess.
“Thus far, every room we’ve been to had a special mechanism we had to solve before proceeding, so if Jazz can spot it before we charge in, that’d be a boon for our chances of succeeding as well. Basically, she has to be as thorough as she can be, at least regarding the key details based off our previous experiences. I’m sure of what else we can do in this position.”
Did Katherine had any ideas before sending Jazz in? If she did, it was probably for the best if she spoke now. Who knew if they were at risk of being spotted and caught in an unfavorable situation like this.

“I can only assume it doesn’t have the power to get those by itself…” A hand on her chin, Katherine replied to Magnus’ doubts the best way she could. Then again, Miyu’s contribution made things a bit more complex. If there were stronger creatures here, how come they couldn’t get the things for their master? Granted, the Penmon had decided to save that type of valuable information for a little too long. Jazz, on her side, glanced at Akemi while she scolded Miyu for her irresponsibility. It was a bit of an adorable sight.
The Spaniard rubbed the back of her head with an apologetic expression as Magnus reacted to the card being shown to him. With how well he reacted to certain types of situations, it was easy to forget Magnus was actually kind of new at all of this! Couldn’t Xros Loaders use cards? That was something she would need to investigate in the future. “Don’t worry! I’ll take care of it.” She nodded and smiled before turning to Jazz.
“That sounds like a plan.” Jazz nodded too when hearing Magnus’ idea. Definitely, the best thing to do was to discover what they were up to in there and where could the rest of Magnus’ partners be. That being said, it was still quite strange for Katherine to keep hearing the names of her friends and them being part of this odd rescue mission. In any case! the goals were clear:
Enter the mysterious main hall Finding out if any of Magnus’ partners were in there and determining their exact location Identify the amount and type of enemies they would be facing Studying any type of odd mechanism that could operate in this room or the type of puzzle that they needed to solve there
… Those were many objectives. Probably far too many!
Okay, enough! Katherine did not have any further input, Magnus had taken care of designing the whole plan and they were ready to execute it. So… !
Card Slash! “Chameleon Cape.”
(For some reason, Katherine really liked doing this)
As soon as the card went through, the overall color pattern of CefiroDarcmon changed to adapt to her surroundings. Almost as if the environment had assimilated the angel or if she had merged with the walls, she wasn’t visible anymore! This was perfect for stealth.
Katherine turned towards their new Penmon friend. “Okay, Miyu. Any clue on how to get to the upper floor?”
What would they find there?
