Everything had begun as a normal day, hadn’t it? The former trio-now-sextet had woken up, and while their daily routine had gotten increasingly more complicated due to the ensemble duplicating its number of members overnight, things had adapted quite fast.
Miyu and Katherine had bound over their shared interest over video games, and their morning ritual was to play some type of vintage two-player shooter game, at least until both died (in the game). In the meantime, Sasha and Akemi shared breakfast while they watched the aforementioned play, with the occasional sprinkle of awkward conversation thrown in. In their own nervousness, it seemed like the two digimons had become unlikely friends, and Akemi had come to appreciate Sasha’s company as much as her sister’s.
That only left Magnus and Mai unaccounted for. Where were they? Currently, the two were donning aprons and were in front of the stove; the male was stirring batter on a bowl while the Gomamon X deftly operated a frying pan to make perfectly round pancakes that were subsequently filled with dulce de leche or honey. Not the most friendly calories-wise, but they were delicious! Coupled with some orange juice, that was, no doubt, the breakfast of champions.
It came without saying that, once everyone had their fill (and Katherine and Miyu failed at killing the zombie-bat-human boss for like the fourth time), the group finally decided to head out to the Digital World for their Saturday. Their destination? Some long-forgotten ruins the brunette’s xros loader had been pointing at for quite a bit now. He supposed that there was when the next egg or digimon would be found, even though this time, the device had proven to be way more erratic than the usual, to the point one had to wonder whether there was something different this time or not.
The sextet eventually arrived at what outwardly looked like the entrance of a series of underground stone tunnels extending that led to a mysterious, yet hopeful destination. However, before the group could step inside or to make any comments regarding their quest, a sudden tremor made the rocky floor collapse under them. Once Magnus regained his consciousness, he found himself surrounded by nothing but moderate darkness in what amounted to a dimly lit hallway.
“Welp.” He couldn’t but say as he began to slowly rise up from his position. He was in some kind of chamber, even though no trace of the collapse that had carried him here was present. Such a puzzling situation. None of his partners were around either, which meant they were either lost or had been dragged somewhere else. All in all, this could only mean a single thing; he’d have to search for them all, and, if possible, for whatever the xros loader was pointing at. Quite the quest, wasn’t it? But, luckily for whoever had engineered this situation, Magnus was more than willing to tackle this challenge head-on. After dusting his clothes off, he began to slowly traverse the tunnel where he was at.

Being at the Digital World at the moment was probably not the best idea. The extend of the abilities the group following them had was still unknown to both Katherine and Jazz, but they were somewhat aware that they could track them better while being at the Digital World, judging by what Maia and Ela had said. That was exactly why the duo was trying to get this expedition over with as soon as possible.
Would they be able to? Things weren’t looking promising so far. Their walk through the tunnels had felt longer than it actually was. The green-eyed assumed they were plenty of meters below ground level, but actually knowing for sure at this point was hard. Only guided by her digivice and with the Lopmon following her steps, the Spaniard continued going through that dimly lightened path until the duo reached a chamber.
A giant shrine seemed to be the central element of the room. Slowly, the pair started going up the stairs of the enormous stone altar. Upon reaching the top, Katherine checked the gadget inside her pocket again. This seemed to be the right place.
The giant tablet standing in front of the tamer had some precious stones that popped out from the surface. The inscriptions on the stone seemed to posit some type of puzzle. One that the raven-haired girl didn’t take long to start solving. After Katherine moved some key jewels, her eyes widened. She could hear some heavy vibration coming from the left. Trembling was happening somewhere in these ruins and, although it didn’t seem to reach the zone where they were, it did sound like a very aggressive movement had occurred.
“What was that?” Jazz took her eyes away from the puzzle Katherine was solving and looked above. “I’ll go check!” Her ears bounced as she dropped from the altar to the floor and started walking.
Although a part of the puzzle had been solved, there was another section of the enigma to untangle. “Don’t go too far away though.” The Spaniard noted without taking her eyes away from the stone.
Jazz headed to the west and started walking in the direction of the deafening rumbling, which had already stopped. After not too long, she would stop and blink twice, seeing a figure approach her from the other side of the tunnel.
“A human…” She muttered.
What could possibly be another human doing here?

At least for the time being, Magnus was completely out of luck. Who would have thought that, out of his five partners, none were near to be found? It was almost vexing in nature, but also somewhat expected, considering the erratic nature of the Digital World. Nonetheless, the brunette advanced through the corridor, trying to take note of anything that might be even slightly interesting; sadly, the whole corridor seemed as plain and unchanging for fifteen minutes or so.
Only then, the corridor would give way to a comparably huge room, with some sort of structure that the young adult couldn’t quite recognize by its midst. Good thing that the place seemed decently more illuminated, as well! And, for some reason… Mocha was there as well? Quite the interesting chain of coincidences, all things considered!
“Hey, Mocha!” The male greeted, all while waving with enthusiasm and closing the distance that separated him from the Lopmon. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Weird to see you in a place like this! Did you get lost as well? Are Nami or Cream with you? Maybe I can help you find them if you got lost as well.”
Maybe those had been too many questions muttered a tad too quickly, but finding a relatively friendly face —and a measure of protection against possible threats, given they were any— in a place like this one was something to be happy about; that much was for sure. “I got separated from the girls after a cave-in. I have no idea where they are, but we’ll probably find them ’em along the way or something. Hope they’re fine.”
Little did Magnus know that Mocha wasn’t Mocha, and that he had probably overwhelmed a Lopmon that didn’t know him with a barrage of questions she couldn’t possibly answer. Probably not the smartest thing to do in hindsight, but could somebody really blame a lost person for getting hopeful at the sight of a ‘familiar’ face? Highly likely, but hopefully not the case there.
Oh well; at the very least he hoped that Katherine, Akemi and the others were okay; they surely had better odds than him being digimons and all, but maybe he had gotten lucky or something and this was actually the safe part of the ruins. No way to know!

For Jazz, the only thing that turned out to be more unexpected than seeing a lonely human in this remote cave was seeing him greet her enthusiastically!
The Lopmon blinked twice and even turned her head to look behind her, making sure this person was not talking to someone else. Did he call her ‘Mocha’? Once they had closed on the distance separating them (which had mostly been accomplished by him, in all honesty), the bunny just stared at this human while he dumped a bunch of questions on her.
“Mo… cha…” She muttered, placing a curious finger below her mouth. “I’m afraid you’re mistaking me for…” Nope. He was not going to let her talk yet! Now he was talking about some Nami and Cream! “Hehe. Cream is a funny name.” The Lopmon giggled. “The girls?” She then tilted her head curiously. Were the girls Nami and Cream? Was Mocha the digimon partner of this human? It honestly didn’t seem like, judging by his first reaction.
Before Jazz could go ahead and try to explain the misunderstanding, a second earthquake occurred. The tunnel started trembling aggressively and, this time, Jazz could immediately tell they were at the apex of the upcoming disaster. “Uh-Oh.” Yes! The floor was crumbling under Magnus again, this time threatening to take Jazz with them too!
Although she had no idea of what could happen if they stayed around for the collapse, the bunny certainly didn’t want to find out! Instead, she would rather go back to the chamber where Katherine was, which seemed to have somewhat solid foundations. And, even if it didn’t, at least the two of them would be together to face whatever was coming.
She wasn’t about to let the human alone here, though.
A swirling stream of light engulfed the Lopmon’s body. As it quickly vanished, it showed the figure of... a young girl wearing a pig suit!
Quickly, the Cho-Hakkaimon picked the mysterious human up and placed him over her shoulder. This was assuming the human put no resistance but… even if he did, was it much he could do about this?
“Let’s… go!!!”
Full speed, the hog ran through the tunnel, back in the direction where the bunny had come from. Time to get back to Katherine before the floor crumbled below them!
Streams of wind flowing around her, Jazz kept accelerating as the surface behind them started to yield. From the pig-girl’s shoulder, Magnus could see how the ground broke into multiple tunnels that seemed to diverge in very different directions.
Luckily, Jazz’s speed would be enough to beat the earthquake. With a final leap, the Cho-Hakaimon went through the last stretch to make it back to the chamber she and Katherine occupied before, which still seemed to be in perfect shape. This time, the Spaniard was standing in front of the tunnel. Hearing the trembling coming from this area, she had been quite worried about her partner. Instead of the cute bunny who had left earlier, what had returned to her was the energetic pig warrior she knew quite well.
Panting, Jazz put the human on the floor, almost paying no attention to the entrance of the tunnel behind her being walled up by a landslide. Katherine closed her eyes as the deafening sound of the tunnel behind them being blocked echoed through the chamber.
“Phew… That was close.” Jazz concluded with a thumbs-up.
Katherine just… stared at the human her partner had brought.

Confusion could be contagious! For a second, Magnus had no idea why Mocha wasn’t… you know, being herself. The bunny seemed to display a measure of cautiousness and uncertainty that Magnus himself wasn’t sure on how to handle, even though his mind managed to surmise quite readily that maybe this wasn’t actually Mocha.
It was only then when his expression shifted to a somewhat apologetic smile; he had run his mouth by quite a bit, hadn’t he? Too late to fix that detail, however.
Not like they'd be given too much time, though! Soon enough, it seemed like the duo was in quite the pinch.. The small quakes below them weren’t lost to Magnus; their meaning even less so, considering he had just been a victim of a similar event moments ago!
Before he could say or react to anything that was happening at the moment, it seemed like the Lopmon had beat him to it, promptly evolving to… a digimon the young man hadn’t ever seen in his life. Was that some kind of girl with a dubious cosplay? It certainly seemed like it.
While somewhat puzzled by the strange new form adopted by the digimon, Magnus found himself on the receiving end of being hauled around like a sack of potatoes. To say the least, quite the experience!
A situation like this one didn’t merit anything overly loud, especially when it could interrupt whatever measure of concentration her rescuer had; for one, the brunette was curious regarding their final destination, even though that was mixed with the dread of what could be their impending doom. In the end, however, the group had emerged unscathed for such a weird ordeal; sure, they had participated in yet another cave-in, but they were all in one piece. Right?
And, more importantly, they were now in the presence of a positively stunning young woman with curly hair and green eyes. “Right? It was so sudden that I didn’t know if we were gonna make it.” He muttered as he stood up and dusted his clothes off, all while trying to somewhat keep his cool.
“I guess there was a bit of a misunderstanding.” He then turned to face the pig-girl. “I mistook you for somebody else; sorry for that one! I just got a bit too happy to see what I thought was a familiar face in a place like this one. Sorry for that one!”
The apology was as sincere as it could be, even though it wasn’t precisely long lived; once again, and only after giving the duo time to properly respond to his greeting, Magnus’ gaze focused on his newest acquaintance. He extended his hand as a greeting. “With that out of the way; nice to meet y’all! My name’s Magnus and I’m currently looking for my girls. We got separated after a cave-in… and after my first attempt at looking for them, I’m kinda unsure of how well that’d go if I were to keep going on my own.”
Of course, that had a more-than-discernable follow-up. Magnus’ expression lit up briefly. “Maybe a pair of gorgeous ladies wouldn’t mind helping me out? I’d be very grateful if you did!”
Sure, more than a bit cheeky, and not precisely liable to be successful, but what other choice did the male have at the moment? It wasn’t like he had a lot of options to work with at the moment. He wasn’t precisely comfortable with baking on the goodness of their hearts, but that’d have to do for the time being… if they even accepted, that is!

Considering the earthquake had finally stopped and her partner was with her at last, Katherine allowed herself to leave the commotion to a side, whether that was intentioned or not. Partly, she was just staring (rude!) at the newcomer Jazz had saved, her hands tucked inside the pockets of her yellow sweater. For a moment, it was hard to keep in mind Jazz probably only knew this person from a minute or two ago. He did seem, however, quite happy that she helped him.
“I know right!?” The Cho-Hakkaimon giggled, looking back at Magnus. “It was kind of fun!” Her previous relief seemed to be gone and now there was just excitement and hunger for more. “I wonder if there’s going to be another one soon!” Was she actually expectant for that!? Luckily, sooner than later her body would be engulfed in that white light again and a much more calmed Lopmon would remain where she stood. Back to her rabbit form, Jazz cleared her throat, kind of apologetic for the craziness her hog-form represented.
“Don’t worry.” She shook her head. “It may happen a lot. I suppose me turning into a Cho-Hakkaimon dispelled any doubt you could have though.” She giggled. As far as she understood, that was an odd form for a digimon to turn into.
Katherine, meanwhile, found herself on the other side of a handshake she returned delicately. “Nice to meet you, M-Magnus.” No last names, right? Damn it. “My name is… Katherine.” The green-eyed showed him an honest smile.
“Your girls… are they your digimon partners?” Jazz assumed they were! But she needed to make sure this guy wasn’t walking around with a harem. Then? The Lopmon giggled. “I mean, I’m down helping you out anyway, but the ‘beautiful’ part is well taken.”
Katherine smiled timidly upon hearing Magnus’ words, playing with her hair as she thanked him for the gesture. Then, she shook her head. “You definitely shouldn’t be walking around here alone if you lost your digimon partners.” The Spaniard reaffirmed. “I… do think what I did here had something to do with the shaking.” She doubtfully gazed at the pillar with the stones she had been manipulating some minutes ago. “As we progress through this cave, there might be some more earthquakes.” Her eyes then went to the roof, as she examined the overall conditions of the tunnels. “Besides, if we have to make a prompt exit upon a collapse, you could use our help. At least until you find your partners.”
So! That sounded like an alliance in the making! They seemed to be in this together now.
Getting to work immediately, Katherine turned to the exit at the eastern side of this hall, diametrically opposed to the exit that has just collapsed. “That seems like the only way to go for now.” The Spaniard noted while taking some steps forward. Then, she took a yellow-colored type of diamond-shaped jewel out of her pocket. That seemed to be the reward for the puzzle she was solving earlier. “I found this here. Maybe this is supposed to go somewhere down the line?”
While they walked, the pair made the effort to know more about their newest companion. “So… what are your digimon partners like? Any clue on where they may be in this cave or how to find them?” Jazz asked. Basically, could his digivice help him in this type of scenario?
Trying to not be too invasive, Katherine probed in with a question. “May I know… why did you come here in the first place? Were you looking for something in particular?” She blinked. Maybe he knew something about this cave that they didn’t and they could use that to get out of here more quickly!

“Yep.” Magnus agreed with the Cho-Hakkaimon. “The funniest part was when I got to survive, if you ask me.” A chuckle soon followed suit, emphasizing the half-joking statement. “I sure hope we don’t get any quakes any time soon though. At least not while the girls’re still missing, you know. Feel like that’d be a bit detrimental.”
While the misunderstanding had with Jazz was understandable at first, it was true that her evolution ultimately eradicated any doubt that the young man could’ve had about her being somebody else. “Pretty much. Sorry for that one again; didn’t know cute brown rabbits were fairly common, even though I gotta say that I already like you a fair bit more than the first one I met.” What a weird compliment, but hopefully it’d be taken as that; a compliment! This Lopmon, despite being a bit on the reckless side as Cho-Hakkaimon, was a lot more likeable than Mocha ever was, that was for sure. Speaking of which…
Magnus gently shook hands with Katherine, a genuine, even if a bit playful smile already plastered on his face. “Katherine.” He repeated; some surprise was evident in his face. “Love the name. It’s very pretty; and a pleasant coincidence, too. I'm looking for a Katherine as well.” Only then, his gaze was momentarily averted towards her partner. “How about yours? It’d be a shame if I didn’t know my savior’s name, after all.”
While in essence, ‘explaining’ who the girls were was a bit on the easier side, it was a bit more complex than that in practice. “Kinda, yes. They’re like five or so digimons that have some issues remembering some details about their pasts, but it seems like they’ve taken a bit of a liking to me! Funnily enough, one of them is called Katherine as well.”
The difference being, of course, that one Katherine was a human while the other was a clam. While the raven-haired girl’s advice was heed with all the responsibility of somebody whose life had been compromised not a long time ago, the truth was that… “I didn’t have that much of a choice, really. It was either remaining still where I was or trying to find them. And I hadn’t moved a lot, in all honesty; not being in the company of digimons seems like a bad idea, but…” His train of thought was interrupted by the next statement. “What were you doing to cause those quakes? They seemed pretty violent.”
Even if that question was avoided, it was ultimately beside the point. “I agree that finding the girls is one of our priorities, though. With any luck, they’ll be relatively near. Or, to at least get Katherine and Akemi as soon as we can; the rest should be simpler after that one.”
As it stood, the two (Three? Eight?) were in this together now, and that gave the brunette a measure of relief. His odds had increased by a lot, at the very least. He took a careful look at the jewel Katherine had gotten, gazing it curiously. “It’ll probably help us down the line. It could even be a key of some sort to a hidden chamber. Who knows.”
Probably not the best time to theorize; it was only now that Magnus realized that he hadn’t described anything about his partners, sides a couple of names. “Uh… oh! Sorry for that one.” He gathered her thoughts for a second before resuming. “There’s five of them total. Katherine’s a Shakomon, which is like a giant clam; she’s very outspoken so chances are we’ll notice her fairly easily if we’re near her. Then there’s Akemi; she’s a Numemon which are… pretty hard to describe and she’s fairly timid, so we’ll probably have to search for her a bit more thoroughly. Flip side is that she’s Katherine’s sister, so there’s always the possibility that the two of them are together.”
Well, it could be possible that groups of them could be together, but… some were more likely than others, right? Anyway. “Miyu’s a Penmon, so she’s a pretty big penguin that’s probably having the time of her life right now; she’s a bit of a thrill-seeker, but hopefully she’ll calm down just a bit in order to assess the situation. Then there’s Sasha, who’s a Jazamon; basically a robot bird. She’s not very talkative, but she’s a good girl. And lastly, Mai; she’s a Gomamon which are like seals, but with a lot more fur than your average seal. She’s the most level headed out of the five, so hopefully she has gotten to some of them and prevented them from getting in trouble. That’s the whole group for the time being! We were separated by a quake, so I have no idea where they might be, besides they are somewhere in this place.”
Quite the long speech, hopefully the two ladies wouldn’t be bored out of their minds. “My Xros Loader had been pointing at this place pretty persistently, and that thing tends to be accurate so… we dived in. It didn’t have the best of results, obviously. But there’s not a lot that can be done about that at the moment.” With that finally finished, Magnus now swerved the conversation a little bit. “What about you two? Anything in particular you were doing in these ruins?”
Not long after Katherine’s —or Jazz’s or both’s— answer, or the lack of thereof, a voice could be heard from the end of one of the corridors in front of the trio. “Eeeeeeeeeeeek!!”
Magnus reacted right away. “That’s Akemi’s voice! It sounds like she’s in trouble!” One thing was for sure; she wasn’t waiting for anyone! Without thinking twice, Magnus began to race in the voice’s direction. Thirty or so meters ahead, quite the unsettling scene was unfolding by the end of the large room. The Numemon X was surrounded by a group of black, blob-like beings that were wearing gas masks. Digimons, no doubt, even though Magnus didn’t know anything about them.
“Akemi’s in danger! We need to do something!” Not like he could demand anything, and his tone already was somewhat pleading. With some luck, the digimons wouldn’t injure Akemi… or worse.

As she shook Magnu’s hand, Katherine tilted her head kindly upon having her name complimented. Then, she looked slightly amazed at the coincidence the partner he was looking as actually a Katherine too! And then, she actually found out for sure these ‘girls’ he was on the lookout for were digimon.
“O-Oh. Sorry.” Jazz bowed a little bit. “My name is Jazz. It’s nice to meet you.” She raised a tiny arm to wave at their new acquaintance. Meanwhile, Katherine proceeded to explain what her actions had been.
“There was basically some type of puzzle in the last room. It wasn’t particularly complicated, but it involved moving some stone plates and rotating them. Once I got that done, this yellow jewel thing popped out of a stone pillar and the earthquake started.” Not much they could contribute to the rest of this particular interaction, so Katherine and Jazz just remained quiet as Magnus went a bit deeper into who these partners were.
As Magnus advanced through his explanations, Katherine and Jazz’s eyes would start to open wider… and wider… and wider… just as he went through the names of all of his partners.
What the…?
Katherine not only shared her name with one of these digimon, she knew people who shared names with ALL of them. They were friends of her, to boot! There were so many names in common that this could NOT be a coincidence. There was absolutely no way it was.
“Excuse me… did you… name these digimon?” Her eyes remained wide open. “Or did they… remembered their names already? You told me they didn’t remember anything about their past?” She was probably turning a bit too inquisitive and rude interrupting this guy but… WHAT WERE THOSE NAMES.
Sooner or later, Magnus would continue explaining the situation, and he would mention something both Katherine and Jazz could assume was coming, their expectations being built for it. What was previously confusion turned into excitement. This was a…
“So you’re a Xros General!” Both the Spaniard and the Lopmon’s eyes seemed to be glimmering with excitement, as they kept walking through the long-rocky hallway the cave offered. “I assumed you were because of all of those digimon but… I had never met one in person. I’ve only heard about them from friends.” A single person commanding an army of digimon, combining them into creatures that are more powerful. That was SO COOL!
Jazz started running a bit faster to catch up with Magnus, her heavy ears moving behind her body. “How does it work? What type of digimon can you exactly combine them into? You have to show us the whole process once we find them!”
At the time, Katherine faced with a question herself. Why had they come here? The Spaniard took an index finger to her lower lip, trying to look for the best way to explain this. “We’re basically part of a research group here in the Digital World. A group that is part of a … Bigger organization. Going through some very old files, one of our members found the coordinates to a location where information about a group of digimon we’re investigating could be stored. The coordinates seemed to lead here and… here we are.” Was that vague enough to not get too complicated but explicative enough to leave Magnus satisfied? Hard to tell.
Not that Magnus would have a lot of time to react to that. The sound of a voice in distress would reach them from the end of the rocky hallway, probably in the next chamber. Katherine and Jazz’s eyes widened, while Magnus just started running instinctively. The girl and the bunny rushed behind, Katherine not minding to leave the short-legged Lopmon behind as she pulled out her digivice.
The two humans got there first. So that was… Akemi. Akemi was… a Numemon, just as Magnus had stated before. A Numemon that looked…. Slightly different from your average Numemon. Katherine would laugh a bit (or a lot) at this later. Right now? She extended her left arm as a gesture for Magnus to make way. A strong gust of wind blew from the hallway they had gone through just now. Something was coming.
In less than a second, a gracious, blonde digimon lady warrior rushed flying between the two, making her way to the center of the chamber to aid the little Numemon.
Jazz, now a CefiroDarcmon, landed in front of the Numemon, taking a good look at all of the digimon surrounding it. Were these… Troopmon? Floating in her own axis, the angel spun to create a whirlwind that deployed around both her and Akemi, violently pushing back any group of digimon surrounding them that wasn’t strong enough to resist the mighty current of wind a perfect-level digimon had created. Would this be enough to fend them off? Or… was a counterattack incoming?

Jazz; at least that name didn’t end up being coinciding with a member of Magnus’ own army! Otherwise, things might’ve been a tad too weird. That aside, the explanation of how the two girls found themselves here, or of how the quakes came to be proved to be quite handy, even though of no consequence at the moment. As long as no one else was engaging into something that could result in more cave-ins, chances are that the group was safe for the time being.
The surprise Katherine displayed at the name’s reveal was a bit on the… startling side? It was hard to tell, yet by no means the strangest thing the male had seen or experienced today. He blinked, then shook his head. It was a bit of a complex situation. Not due to Katherine’s sudden interjection. More like, by the very nature of it. “You might have gotten a bit ahead of yourself, Katherine. I didn’t really say that.” The brunette didn’t seem all too concerned about the misconception, however. “I said that they didn’t remember some details about their pasts. Their names are not part of that one; they came with those by themselves. Thankfully; I can’t see myself naming so many digimons.”
That aside? He didn’t know that whatever he was had a label, but he guessed that was pretty handy when it came to introductions and things. He smiled calmly, even though he frankly didn’t understand what the hype was about. “Sure, I think. It’s not that big of a deal, but if the situation presents itself, I can show you.”
Being in the spotlight was definitely not something he craved, but it didn’t feel that bad, either. He looked down onto a Jazz, a bit of a pensive expression on his face. “Truth to be told, I’m still a bit of a newbie regarding the whole deal. But the gist of it is just… pointing the xros loader, selecting the digimons and pressing a button? At least, that’s how it’s been thus far.” As far as the xros repertoire went, however? That one was a bit on the lacking side, at least for the time being. “Akemi and Katherine can kinda xros ‘on their own’, without any kind of external help; don’t ask me how it works, because I have no idea, but Katherine can become either a shark or a one of those prehistoric shrimps, but with blades everywhere. Akemi either becomes a ray or one of those anthropomorphic turtles from Japanese folklore. Kappas I think? Then Miyu and Sasha can join together and form a seahorse, but mechanical and with a megaphone instead of a proper mouth. That’s more or less it.”
The duo’s reasons for being in a place like this one seemed mysterious. But that was fine; Magnus wasn’t the type that’d prod somebody on something where they looked like they were being purposefully cryptic. “That sounds like an interesting goal. I wonder what anyone would want with a place like this one, though. Seems pretty deserted, as far as I’m concerned.”
Not like that conversation could or would go for long, anyway. Akemi’s cry of help prompted immediate action, and soon enough the trio found themselves in the midst of the action. It was a good thing that the Numemon X seemed uninjured, yet not so good that the male had no idea what the unknown digimons were. The author can confirm they’re Troopmons, though.
In accordance to Katherine’s implied motion, the man made way for… an winged figure? Given Jazz’s proven penchant to adopt humanoid forms, it was quite likely that this was her. She had joined the fray.
Akemi cowered while the tornado was deployed; it succeeded at pushing the Troopmons back, but it wasn’t enough to get rid of them. Bouncing off seemingly invisible walls, the digimons resumed their advance.
Not being able to be a mere observer, Magnus stepped forward, yet bounced backwards with… what probably was the same thing the enemies used to regain momentum. “What in tarnation is this supposed to be?” To say he was frustrated at the moment was a pretty big understatement. He wanted to help, damnit! After banging a first on it three or four more times, it seemed like a pointless endeavor.
It was only then when he noticed that, perpendicular to the main pathway there was some sort of square-ish, stone contraption. It looked like a panel of sorts? After approaching it, he noticed that there were four symbols on each of its four cardinal directions; full moon at the right, new moon at the left, first quarter down, third quarter up.
Could it be related to the mysterious forcefield? Or with the ruins’ mysterious workings? Probably two heads were better than one at figuring this one out, and Katherine seemed to have already interacted with the miscellaneous devices this place had. “Hey, Katherine.” He motioned towards the panel. “Can you make heads or tails about what this is for? It might have something to do with whatever’s happening.”
She looked like a clever girl, so maybe they could figure this one out together.

While Magnus’ answer about those names only rose more questions than it brought answers in Katherine’s head, for better or for worse, the situation developing had not let them continue with this conversation. Without a doubt, the Spaniard would come back to this later, considering how freaking strange all of this was. For the time being? There was a lot to do!
Jazz, our winged heroine, had managed to push back all of the attacking enemies in one go. However, they not only seemed to have found a barrier on their way allowing them to reincorporate without going far back; they have also seemed to have gained strength to keep going with their menace!
Luckily, they didn’t seem to have become stronger yet, so they would still be easy to fend off for the time being, at least while further help arrived. Jazz unsheathed her sword and started fending off enemies at great speed and with powerful slashes. For now, she wasn’t aiming at splitting them in two, but more like keep them away from Akemi until the barrier was broken and she could really send them back.
Magnus was the first one to run on Akemi’s aid. “C-Careful!” Katherine extended a hand considering to stop the man, but it seemed an invisible wall had managed to do just that. It also seemed to be of no use to hit those, they were firm enough to stop the Troopmons and keep them around Akemi and Jazz. Had the CefiroDracmon flew over that barrier? Or did it deploy after she landed? Everything led Katherine to think it was the first case, but, in such a cryptic place, it was hard to know.
Katherine’s green eyes went from the fray taking place at the center of the hall towards Magnus and back. The young man had rushed to a stone panel, the sole element in that room that could provide them a hint of how to proceed. He quickly made a gesture for Katherine to provide some type of intel about it. The Spaniard approached the panel too and took a good look at it, not without trying to keep an eye on Jazz and the battle that developed around her and the Numemon.
“O-Okay… let’s see…” She timidly approached the panel, her right shoulder over her left forehand, trying to think about a plausible solution. She had used one of these before, although the symbols visible here were very different. “These look like the moon phases and are even ordered as such.” The Spaniard did not remember a lot about these, but she did learn about them at school when she was a kid. If you went ‘west, south, east, north’ you could even complete a full moon cycle. However, the properties of this panel were unknown to Katherine so she wasn’t too sure how to interact with it. “Can you try pushing them? Or are you supposed to… move them around? If it’s pushing, then maybe you can go ‘left, down, right, up, to complete a full cycle. If not…” How were they supposed to be rearranged? In addition, how could they be moved through the panel, even? If the first attempt failed, Katherine would try moving and pushing some of the symbols, basically to understand what were the axis of movement and how could she overall interact with this. Could the New Moon phase be related to the invisibility of that barrier?

It was funny yet frustrating at the same time, but Magnus couldn’t really tell how urgent this situation was. Did Jazz have the situation under control? Or were things more dire that they seemed? Strangely enough, the vampireangel-like being seemed to have her assailants under control, even though most of them seemed relentless on their advance, as futile as it apparently was.
Focusing on that was probably a waste of time, however. For as long as Jazz had that one in control, Katherine and Magnus could hopefully solve the strange puzzle ahead of them, and with some luck that’d end up solving both problems with one swift sweep. So, what did the duo have in their hands then? As the girl had noted, it was indeed a panel with the moon and its phases. What could they mean, though?
The brunette hummed pensively at the ideas exposed by his peer for a couple of seconds. “Worth a shot.” He answered quickly. Truth to be told, they probably didn’t have a lot of time to waste. Thus, he began to try and rearrange the panels.
Nope. Stuck on their place. “Crap.” The male cursed. However, something definitely reacted. At least when Magnus’ hand had placed on top the full moon symbol, the otherwise invisible barrier began to glimmer faintly. “I guess that confirms why we can’t get in, even though Jazz could normally.”
Now, the question was, what else? The full moon seemed to make the barrier visible, but other than that, it didn’t seem to have any functions, or, at least that Magnus knew about. That left three symbols, and by logic, if the full moon did that, then the new moon should…
For the smallest of moments, the teenager’s left hand hovered over that position, all while his right still on the full moon symbol. Just as he expected, the barrier began to fade, and it looked like the troopmons would pour out of the barrier if it weren’t for a quick movement that undid that change. “Okay, that can be very dangerous. We don’t want those out so… we should search for a way to maybe distract them while Jazz and Akemi get out, then reactivate it again.”
Of course, that was far easier said than done, yet they still had two positions in the panel unchecked. “We could try and see if any of these can help us to distract those guys, even though they could make matters worse if we’re not careful. Alternatively, we could try to have Jazz or Akemi do the distraction manually. What do you think is the better idea? I’m unsure of it myself.”
Both could go well. Both could go badly. Difference being that in one they were at the mercy of what unknown symbols did while on the other they relied on their digimons executing their part and on their foes falling for it. A complex scenario, if the male had seen them.
How about Jazz and Akemi, however? The Troopmons’ advance was relentless, but thus far it had proven easy enough to repel, and at least for Akemi, easy enough to avoid. “Wh-what do you th-think they’re up to?” The small digimon commented as she lobbed her species’ signature projectile to a nearby Troopmon, hitting it flawlessly and momentarily halting its march. “I-I don’t know for how much t-time we’ll be able to h-hold them off.”

There were many things puzzling Katherine about this particular set of panels. She had dealt with something similar in shape and distribution earlier, but the way things behaved when Magnus interacted with these was certainly mysterious. The green-eyed folded her arms and stared back at the barrier. “Why did it start to fade when you had your hand on the full-moon and hovered over the new moon, though? Does it only react if you “select” the barrier by keeping your hand over the full moon?” Katherine certainly could expect the barrier to go from visible to invisible when putting your hand on the new moon… but why did the barrier actually stop existing when hovering the hand over the new moon while having one hand put on the full moon already?
Based on that logic… “If you put your hands on first quarter and third quarter while keeping your other hand over the full moon… that would probably open a part of the barrier.” That wasn’t good. At least not until the enemies were distracted. And Katherine made sure to leave clear Magnus should certainly not do that right now. “But what if you lifted your hand from the full moon and then touched first quarter?” What SHOULD happen is that a part of the barrier would become visible, but the whole barrier should still be there… right? Was it worth the try? That could work as a decent distraction but… given how little info Katherine had on this, anything could end up happening.
If that plan didn’t have the desired result, and if time was still on their side, Jazz would proceed and prepare to try contributing in her way. “I’m not sure…” Her eyes trailed towards Akemi. “… But they do seem to have a lot of energy, so I’d prefer leaving them in here.” With that, Jazz would slash the air using her sword, creating a small whirlwind that would begin to grow in size. The CefiroDarcmon would direct the tornado as far as she could from her and Akemi while still keeping it inside the barrier. This vortex would start trying to pull all of the Troopmons (or any other form of life inside the barrier that wasn’t Akemi or Jazz) inside its apex. A mighty force dragging them in as if it were a gravitational field. That wouldn’t last long, but it could certainly be enough of a ‘distraction’ to stop them from coming out if a gap was opened.
Whether the distraction was caused by Magnus pressing the first quarter while NOT pressing the full moon or, alternatively, caused by Jazz’s technique, as soon as the Troopmon were busy enough to not-follow them, it would become obvious it was the time to escape. “Maybe you can now try opening a gap with the full moon and the first quarter.” She would suggest, her eyes shifting towards Magnus for a second. Would this work? Or would they have to open the whole thing in order to let the pair escape? Whatever was the case; Jazz would grab Akemi with both hands and try to fly outside.

Katherine did an excellent job at putting into words the result of Magnus’ actions. He nodded right after she was done with her explanation. “I believe so as well. At least from what I’ve seen, that seems to be the case.” From what little Magnus had tinkered with it, his peer’s observations appeared to be correct. And while they mightn’t be, it wasn’t like they had a lot of time to go through the various theories that could explain how the panel worked. As it stood, time was of the essence.
It was then, however, when an idea crossed the male’s mind. “What if the full moon doesn’t really do anything besides making the barrier visible? It’d make sense since the whole thing is invisible otherwise. If this is a maintenance panel, then being able to observe any changes on the barrier’s constitution is probably a feature that would come in handy.” Of course, that theory was… just a theory, at the end of the day. What he had could be true or completely false.
Luckily, that could be checked out quite easily, without hovering on the full moon symbol, Magnus’ hand hovered on the new moon symbol, and the result was exactly has he predicted. Understandably, he was pretty quick to get his hand away as well; he didn’t want to release the Troopmons just to prove a point! Katherine did provide an interesting theory, however. What would happen in that case? Without thinking too much about it, one the brunette’s hands hovered over the full moon while another moved slowly towards the first quarter symbol.
What did happen, then? It seemed like the barrier’s strength began to gradually diminish, as if losing power gradually rather than suddenly. Maybe an interesting tool to have in mind, even though the rate seemed a bit on the slow side to be of any practical use. However, that sparked an idea in Magnus' mind.
In the meantime, Jazz and Akemi were still fighting against the Troopmon horde, with no end in sight for the engagement. Well, at least through the means they had. “M-me too…” Another piece of numesludge was promptly lobbed at the army, even though it only provided temporary respite from their advance. “I-I wonder w-why Magnus isn’t m-making me xros. I-It’s weird.”
The theory had been concocted already, and only action remained. Taking a deep breath, Magnus placed one of his hands on the full moon symbol, while the other hovered around the first quarter. Once again, the barrier was diminishing, even though the process speed seemed a bit on the slower side. “They’re not gonna get away in time unless we do something else…!” Call it the situation’s desperate nature, but another idea sprang into the male’s mind. In a genuinely desperate motion, he took one of Katherine’s hands within his own. “Sorry for that! I need to check something real quick!”
He then placed both hands on the first quarter symbol, and almost as if it were magic, the process began to accelerate to an acceptable pace. “It worked!” Once the barrier became weak enough, the screen of Magnus’ xros loader lit up. It seemed like it had finally recognized Akemi!
And just in a timely way. Just as the two digimons began to move in order to leave the forcefield, it seemed like the Troopmons were about to catch up with them. They needed to think fast. “Katherine! Can you hold the full moon symbol for me a bit? I need to use my hand a sec.”
Given that he did, in a display of moderate dexterity, Magnus operated his xros loader with enough proficiency for the light of digixros to erupt both from the device’s screen and engulf Akemi’s body. Shortly after, the Numemon’s X body was replaced by the shape of a kappa wielding a half sickle, half gun weapon. Given her precarious position, she began to bombard the Troopmons that came closer to the duo until they finally exited the barrier.
Least to say, Magnus removed his hand from the first quarter symbol, only to realize that in the intensity of the situation, he might have held Katherine’s hand on accident the whole time. Or, at least if she hadn’t let go first. “Oh, whoops!” He couldn’t deny that his cheeks might’ve been a bit on the red side after that. “Sorry for that. I might’ve got caught in what was happening a bit.” At least he managed to play it cool until Akemi and Jazz arrived, and, at least in the former’s case, promptly devolved back to her usual form.
“Th-that was close.” She sighed with relief before noticing the situation and kinda running behind Magnus to hide. “Wh-who are these?”
After a couple of admittedly slimy pats, the Numemon finally calmed down. “Don’t worry, Kemi. These are Katherine and Jazz. They agreed to help us find our Katherine and the others. They’re good people.” After those words, she finally managed to peek a bit from her hiding spot to wave at the ‘strangers’.
“I-I’m Akemi. Pleased to m-meet you both.” She waved timidly, which was probably a funny image considering how she had fought alongside the CéfiroDarcmon moments ago, but… that was just how things were. Sure, they still had to search for everyone else, but at least they could savor this victory for a bit, right?
“I wouldn’t mind moving a bit before pleasantries, though.” Magnus said, while eyeing the captive Troopmons that weren’t exactly very far from them. “Those things give me the creeps.”

Although Katherine’s initial interpretation of what may be happening when Magnus interacted with this panel was mostly correct, things would develop a lot differently from what she expected. “T-That makes sense!” Her eyes widened. “Of course. The barrier was already invisible before we interacted with the panel, so it being invisible is its nature, it wouldn’t make sense for a button on the panel to make it invisible.” How could she miss that!?
Once she realized this thanks to Magnus’ help, they would start interacting with the panel again, testing the results of their actions. Something Katherine could really not see coming was the fact the speed the barrier disappeared with would depend if their hand were on the full moon symbol or not.
Jazz would continue to fend away those enemies along with Akemi. “Xros?” The angel’s eyes widened. “How can he make you Xros without another partner?” She looked around, trying to find who could Akemi Xros with.
Among the multiple theories that crossed Katherine’s head, it never occurred to her that using two hands on the same panel could make the barrier diminish quicker. “Sure!” She nodded and moved her hand to place it over the full moon symbol, while her other hand remained held against the first quarter. Being quite close to Magnus, she was able to see from really close how he operated his Xros Loader with one hand. Was he going to make Akemi… evolve? Could she do that with no partners around?
It seemed like she could! Akemi had turned into a new creature that was perfectly able to keep the enemies away while she and Jazz exited the barrier area, only for the tamers to let it close again, encapsulating the Troopmons inside. As they went through these motions, it would become evident for Katherine too that her hand had been held the whole time. “D-Don’t worry about it.” She shook her head quickly, her cheeks also gaining a red-ish tonality for a moment.
Both Jazz and Katherine turned their attention to Akemi, who had a sweet (a little bit on the shy side, too) voice. Admittedly finding the situation a bit adorable, a smile formed around Katherine’s lips, as she took some steps towards Magnus and Akemi and crouched to be a bit closer to the digimon. “Hello.” She tilted her head and made a delicate gesture with her hand, trying to get it closer to the Numemon to kind of shake her slimy mitt. “It’s my pleasure to meet you, Akemi. My name’s Katherine, just like your sister’s.” For some reason.
Jazz devolved to her Cho-Hakkaimon form, waving back at the Numemon while standing next to Katherine. “I’m Jazz. You did a great job out there. Thank you for your help, Akemi.”
Both the hog and the green-eyed girl turned to look at Magnus, who had a fairly good point. “You’re probably right…” The Spaniard noted, looking back at the Troopmons inside the barrier. It would be then when she noticed a green, shard-like type of gem over the panel they had just interacted with. It looked like it had previously been locked into the panel, but now it had been released. This lead Katherine to think nothing bad could happen if she took it, so…
“I wonder how many of these we’ll need.” She questioned as she retired the gem from the panel and put the item inside the pocket of her yellow sweater. She now had two gems! Green and yellow. To the opposite side of the room from where they have entered, another doorway stood. “I guess that’s the only way to go now…” How many weird puzzles and dangers awaited until they found the rest of Magnus’ team?

All’s well that ends well. At least for the time being, the group was out of danger, and everyone seemed to have come out of this situation relatively unscathed. Overall, great news! Sure, maybe there were some minor incidents along the way, but nothing too serious.
Right now, however, Magnus could admit that he was happy their greatest problem was Akemi’s own crippling shyness. It was a good thing that neither Katherine nor Jazz seemed to be fazed due to the fact that she was a Numemon, and actually reacted pretty positively towards the whole deal. Such a treatment prompted her to abandon her hiding spot, at least temporarily, just so she could shake Katherine’s hand.
“I-I like your n-name.” She pronounced shyly, only to retreat behind Magnus right away. And just then, shift her sight to Jazz. “Th-thanks for rescuing m-me. Those Tr-troopmons were creepy…”
Magnus smiled at the Numemon before lifting her up and giving her a couple of gentle pats. “They’re right, though. You did an amazing job, Kemi. You were very brave there, you know?” Chances were that, if the Numemon’s coloration let her blush, she’d be beet red at the moment.
“Th-thanks.” With the small exchange done, the brunette began to walk in the direction of the next corridor, but not until Katherine had retrieved her small prize. “I wonder if the fact that my partners got dispersed is related to those crystals. Maybe to an extent?” Sure, he was spitballing right now, but maybe that theory was worth some thought.
Right now, however, the group found itself walking through another dimly lit corridor. “If that’s the case, though. We’re still missing Katherine, Sasha, Miyu, and Mai. Take you don’t know where they might be, Kemi?”
The digimon just shook her head. “A-After the cave in, th-the next thing I remembered w-was waking up inside th-that dome with the Troopmons. S-Sorry…” The apology was immediately dismissed. “Don’t worry about that. We’ll find everyone in no time. I just hope they’re not in impending danger or anything of the sort.”
Sure, those words were probably not the best to calm anyone down, but they were the truth, and at least Akemi seemed to be pretty accepting of them. “The fact that forcefield blocked my Xros Loader’s signal and didn’t let me evolve Kemi until the barrier was broken probably means we’ll have to resort to traditional methods to locate the rest, at least if they’re in situations similar to her.” He made a small pause, before turning to address Katherine. “Do you know what might cause that kind of interference? At least right now, my Xros Loader only points in a single direction, and has been ever since we got to these ruins.”
The question was a bit of a coin flip. The young woman could or couldn’t know, but nothing was lost by asking, right? She seemed to be pretty knowledgeable about how the Digital World operated, even though how xros worked didn’t look to be her strong suit.
