Walking along a beach in the Southern Tropics, Mandrake and Lothar were enjoying the soothing sounds of the sea. Mandrake wanted to try something new and, after Lothar suggested this beach, the two made their way. Mandrake was trying to learn new magic and hopefully this would have some uses in the future. Spotting a large boulder on the beach, he sat down near it while leaning back against it. After setting his staff near him in the sand, he looked at Lothar and said "This ability will leave me vulnerable to attack but I know you'll be able to handle whatever comes up while I try to master this skill."
"Don't worry, Mandrake, I'll keep a close eye out." Lothar said with a smile as he listened for oncoming threats.
With a nod Mandrake closed his eyes, gradually slowed his breathing, and muttered "Astral Projection."
As Mandrake's invisible astral form left him his body began to fall forward with Lothar catching him. Lothar then lay Mandrake down carefully on the sand. At this point anyone who came upon them could misinterpret Lothar as an aggressive digimon who attacked Mandrake.

"So you've never been swimming before, Luneth?" The red music dragon Shoutmon asked his Hackmon son Luneth as they and Shoutmon's partner Adrian walked down the beach. They had wanted to spend more time with the Hackmon, who was usually more interested in doing stuff alone or studying than actually spending time with his father. Today though, they managed to convince him to go swimming with Adrian and Shoutmon in the Digital World.
"Not really, I admit," the Hackmon said in response to his father, "I mean, I know HOW to swim, but I never really done so for entertainment. Was more preoccupied with finding you and Mother."
"Well no time like the present," Adrian said, who was wearing a light grey T-Shirt and red swimming trunks, along with his usual goggles, "Summer's gonna end soon and I haven't done much swimming. Trust me, Luneth, you're gonna have fun."
"Yeah! Just a couple guys havin' fun, y'know?"
"Yeah, sounds swell." Luneth despised being around his father these days, but today it seemed like he had no choice. He wanted to lash out at the Shoutmon but didn't want to seem like a jerk, so he kept his feelings in. Shoutmon definitely sensed that his own son didn't really like him, however...
While they walked, they encountered two other Digimon on the beach. From their perspective, it looked like the Leomon was doing something bad to the Wizardmon! "Hey! What do you think you're doing to him?!"

Mandrake's invisible astral form was now about ten feet away and it seemed to be the limit he could float from his body. Looking around he saw the ocean as well as his friend. Since he was floating low to the ground he saw the group approching Lothar and, judging by the looks on their faces, they must of thought Lothar had done something to him. Considering the angle they approached from, Mandrake could easily understand how one could make such an assumption.
Hearing a voice shouting at him, Lothar slowly stood and looked in the direction of the voice seeing a human with a Shoutmon and Hackmon. It seemed the strangers thought he had done something to cause Mandrake to be in his current vulnerable state. Deciding to speak calmly, Lothar said "I can see how you could assume that I hurt him but I didn't. This is my best friend and his name is Mandrake. He is practicing a new technique right now and it leaves him in this vulnerable state." Keeping his posture non agressive, he hoped that the strangers believed his words.

Despite what the group may have thought they saw, the Leomon tried to assure them that he didn't hurt the Wizardmon at all, and that he was actually his best friend. He claimed that the Wizardmon, who's name was Mandrake, was practicing a new technique that left him vulnerable.
"You don't seem to have a reason for lying to us," Adrian admitted.
"I could think of one," Shoutmon said, "he could be hoping we go away so he can finish the job, like delete and load him or take all of his Bits. What kind of move leaves someone like that anyways?"
"For once I agree," Luneth said, "if he really is using some kind of technique then surely he's bound to wake up at some point. If not, then we can know for sure if he's actually some kind of crook."
"Like father, like son," Adrian sighed. "Come on guys, we just got here, let's not antagonize the first Digimon we see, huh? Besides, do you really wanna take on a Leomon?"
"You can Digivolve me to OmniShoutmon."
"Not to beat up a random stranger! I'm telling you, he's saying the truth. Watch, you'll see."

Mandrake was almost back to his body as he over heard the conversation. It seemed that the Shoutmon and Hackmon were suspicious of Lothar and Mandrake couldn't blame them. Hopefully when he reentered his body he could help Lothar straighten things out. His astral form reentered his body and he opened his blue eyes before slowly sitting up. "It's alright, my friend speaks the truth. I was working on mastering astral projection when you all came upon me while I was outside of my body in my astral form." Mandrake said before reaching over and grabbing his staff. Mandrake then pushed himself to his feet which showed he was perfectly fine. Looking at Lothar, he then said "Lothar, I think I should practice this ability at inns or hotels so we don't end up with such misunderstandings in the future."
"Probably a good idea, Mandrake." Lothar said but as Mandrake's eyes widened in alarm, he then asked "What is it, Mandrake?"
"I sense a presence of some kind coming this way." Yet before Mandrake could say more, Mandrake's own shadow seemed to rise up from the ground and envelop him before pulling the magician into the ground where he seemed to vanish before the groups eyes.
"Mandrake!" Lothar shouted his brown eyes wide with horror.

Like Adrian said, the Wizardmon Mandrake would suddenly lift his head up, confirming that all that the Leomon had said was the truth. Adrian looked towards the two rookie level Digimon with a smug look on his face. "You see? I told ya."
"Alright fine, you were right on this," Shoutmon groaned with a look of angered embarrassment, with Luneth also having a similar facial expression. "But we could've been right as well, ya know."
"It's all about perspective, I suppose," Adrian responded before looking back towards the Wizardmon and Leomon. "So sorry about that, they're both really nice, I promise. I'm Boriker Adrian, the red dragon there is my partner Shoutmon, and the Hackmon is his son Luneth."
"Howdy!"
"A pleasure to meet you. And yes, apologies about before."
"You never know what could happen in the Digital World, so we uh, assumed the worst."
Right as he said that though, Mandrake claimed to sense another Digimon nearby. With no warning at all, Mandrake's shadow seemed to materialize itself into a figure of its down, grabbing onto the Wizardmon and pulling him right into the ground. Wasting no time, Adrian ran right up to where the Wizardmon previously was and tried digging down into the sand, with little to no luck.
"What the hell just happened?!"
"That was unlike any Digimon I've ever seen...!"
"Is he in danger? We need to go after them!"

Lothar couldn't believe his eyes. Just when things had calmed down Mandrake was pulled into the shadows before their very eyes. The human known as Adrian began digging futilely at the sand but Lothar had an idea of what had happened and who had taken Mandrake. When asked if Mandrake is in danger, Lothar said "In more danger than you know. I've only seen this being once and from what Mandrake has told me, he plans on enslaving my friend and using his power for his own cruel ends."
Then a curious scent was carrying on the wind. There was no mistaking that scent it was Mandrake's but if he was pulled into the shadows how was Lothar picking it up? Sniffing the air once again, Lothar said "I have Mandrake's scent but it makes no sense unless his kidnapper wants to be followed." His posture grew uneasy as he then said "I don't get it. Why would he want to be followed so easily unless it's a trap." Though not liking the odds Lothar knew he had to follow and save Mandrake and began running not knowing if Adrian, Shoutmon, and Luneth would follow.
Meanwhile some distance away, Mandrake groaned softly his head fuzzy as he slowly opened his sapphire blue eyes. Last thing he remembered was being snatched by shadows and blacking out shortly after being enveloped. Gazing around he found himself in a dark musty room but knew he wasn't alone since he could feel a powerful presence in the dark. As he tried to sit up he realized he had a problem. Looking down he noticed his wrists were shackled to the table at either side of his body and a thick leather strap was holding his body down as well. Since Mandrake was an escape artist he had already figured out how to free himself but before he could do so his cloaked captor came out of hiding. Mandrake stared into the still unknown digimon's glowing red eyes as he approached the restrained Wizardmon.
"I see you still haven't gotten it in your head that I want nothing to do with you." Mandrake said coldly though he couldn't completely hide his fear as the being merely chuckled while standing right next to him.
"You should of suspected that I wouldn't stop, Mandrake. As for your friend, he is on his way to save you but he will not leave with you alive as I plan on destroying him and downloading his data right before your eyes." The dark being said as his red eyes widened in surprise before he said "And judging by what I've read from your mind, it will be traumatizing."
Mandrake's eyes widened briefly as he realized what the cruel creature had read from his mind before struggling to regain his composure. Seeing Mandrake's struggle the dark being said "Don't worry he'll be here soon since I set up a temporary headquarters instead of bringing my castle. I don't need my army to deal with that Leomon known as Lothar."

Lothar's explanation of this shadow Digimon's plans did not resonate well with the others. "It just came out of Mandrake's shadow..." Adrian muttered as he stood up. "What kind of Digimon even has that ability?"
"Perhaps a very powerful one," Luneth answered.
Shoutmon turned around towards his son. "Looks like beach day just got delayed somewhat. Go back to Shibuya and wait for us there, whatever this thing is is too powerful for you."
"I'm not going to stand on the sidelines while you and Adrian throw yourself into danger, Father. Let me help!"
"You haven't even Digivolved to Champion yet, I don't want to see you get hurt, Luneth!"
"We don't have time to discuss this, Shoutmon. Luneth, you can come with us, but just be careful, since your father does have a point. Lothar, you said you could sense him? Can you lead us to him?" Lothar would then take off, prompting Adrian and the two Digimon to follow after him. Hopefully they weren't getting in over their heads with this...

Lothar was moving at full speed following Mandrake's scent into a forest his unease at how easy this was still lingering and even overpowering another thought that had been on his mind shortly after he first digivolved into Leomon. Though this thought only appeared in times when they weren't in danger, it had become more persistent over time. Maybe he should have talked to Mandrake about this before he was kidnapped but it was too late now to worry about such a thing. If he was able to rescue Mandrake he would worry about it then.
Not knowing if the others had kept up with him he skidded to a halt and spotted Mandrake's staff lying discarded on the ground standing out easily near some bushes. Picking it up, he tightened his grip on the staff before taking off again. Meanwhile, with Mandrake, the dark being was hiding in the shadows of this temporary lair but Mandrake was more than aware of the dark one's location due to his telepathy. Looking down at his restraints, he considered working his way free but how far would he get before he was recaptured? Was the dark being expecting such a thing? Who knew how many of Mandrake's thoughts were being read? Sighing he decided to remain right where he was even though he didn't like that option.
Mandrake's eyes widened as he sensed not only Lothar's approach but the others from the beach. Hopefully they knew what they were getting into or things would not end so well. Mandrake turned his gaze to the door on the other side of the room. Judging by how fast they were moving they would be here soon.

"For a shadow demon thing, it certainly didn't take your friend too far if you can still track him," Adrian said as the group ran through the jungle, mainly following where Lothar was going. "Whatever that thing is, it can't be that dumb, can it?"
"Wait, are you saying that this could be a trap?" Shoutmon asked.
"I don't know for sure but it all feels like one."
While they were running, Lothar suddenly stopped, causing the others to stop as well. There was a staff with a sun as the topping rod lying on the ground. Shoutmon noticed how the Leomon picked it up and tightened his grip on it. "We're gonna find him, alright? Adrian and I have dealt with even worse creeps before, so we got your back."
They would soon come up to some random run down building in the forest. Definitely suspicious, since it was very out of place for this area of the Digital World. "Adrian's correct, this definitely seems like a trap."
"Yeah, now I see where he was coming from. Any ideas, Adri?"
"Well I don't know what that thing expects us to do. Use the door, bust in, send in a decoy... it could be prepared for any of it. I wish I knew more about whatever the hell that thing was."
"I wanna call it Zsalm. It fits a shadow demon Digimon thingy quite a bit. What do you think, Lothar?"

It didn't take the others saying it was a trap for Lothar to know this since he knew it from the start. The trick was why bother creating this trap for him? He could have just disappeared with Mandrake and not bothered with this. "I don't like how easy this is. Since he could of used his shadow abilities to go anywhere with Mandrake, why bother with leading me along like this?"
By the time the group reached the small building Lothar was on full alert. When Adrian mentioned he wanted to know more about what they were up against, Lothar said "I'm afraid Mandrake and I have no clue what digimon we're up against except that he is a super mega. So he might or might not be a demon." Lothar thought for a moment. Since this creature was expecting him the hard part was deciding how to go about entering.
Meanwhile, with Mandrake, the shadow being muttered something that the Wizardmon barely heard "So strong together but when alone they are no threat to me." Mandrake wondered what that meant. Was it possible this being feared Mandrake and Lothar together in some way?
Outside with everyone else, Lothar had made up his mind. Sure it was risky but it was likely the one move that wasn't expected. Walking up to the door Lothar unleashed a mighty kick sending the door over Mandrake and into the wall on the far side of the room before he walked in his senses on high alert as he scanned the room seeing Mandrake restrained. "Come out from the shadows you coward. I'm here like you wanted. Show yourself."
The shadow being emerged from the shadows in all his cloaked glory his red glowing eyes settling on Lothar before he said in a bored manner. "Kicking the door in? Not one for subtlety are you?"

"Bad guys like to avoid the simple way as much as possible just to have some 'fun', as far as I can tell," Shoutmon stated when Lothar mentioned how easy it was to follow this thing back here. "Entertaining if you're watching from the comfort of your own home, but annoying when YOU'RE the one trying to fight it!"
Not much was revealed about this shadow Digimon thing, aside from Lothar mentioning that it was a Super Mega. "Super Mega? We've seen those before, and they've nearly killed us too!"
"Luneth, you might have to stand back for this one. I don't want to see you hurt, okay?"
"But Father, I-"
"That is a command, not a request, Luneth. Never thought I'd say something like that..." The Hackmon hesitated briefly before nodding and running back to hide behind some nearby trees. He didn't respect his father, but he definitely knew that he had seen more combat than Luneth has...
Lother would then kick the door of the building in, definitely a bold approach, revealing a tied up Mandrake in the middle of the room. Adrian wouldn't hesitate to run up and attempt to untie the Wizardmon's restrictions, Shoutmon's senses on high alert like Lothar's. And just like that, the shadow Digimon emerged again over the group. Adrian and Shoutmon looked up, both never having seen something like this.
"W-What the hell...?" Adrian asked with a look of fear in his eyes as he backed away a couple of steps.
"Okay, just what kind of Digimon even are you?!" Shoutmon angrily asked, his battle spirit replacing his sense of fear for the moment.

Villains and their habits of making things more involved then they had to be was an annoying factor for multiple folks since it couldn't be just Mandrake and Lothar that had that problem but Lothar thought no more on that as Luneth obeyed his father and hid in the forest. This was no situation for a rookie digimon to be in. When the shadow being mentioned that Lothar was not one for subtlety, the Leomon turned brown eyes on the mysterious digimon and said "A coward like yourself has no room to talk."
The shadow being glanced at the group with glowing red eyes and, as if ignoring, Lothar's comment decided to answer the Shoutmon as he said "That is for me alone to know."
As Adrian tried to free Mandrake, he said "Adrian, don't worry about me. Leave here with Lothar and Shoutmon."
Turning red eyes on the human known as Adrian, the being said "I would listen to him, human. Though whether you flee or not doesn't matter since I only intend to destroy his friend before leaving with Mandrake." Then the dark being's red glowing eyes widened in surprise as he turned his gaze to Lothar before he said "What is this now? It seems Lothar has an interesting thought in his mind indeed and it matches that of my future servant, Mandrake."
"I told you before, you monster, I will never serve you no matter what you do to me." Mandrake said as he freed himself from the restraints before tugging his staff to him with his telekinesis. Lothar released his grip on Mandrake's staff when he felt the tug and it flew into Mandrake's hand. Mandrake and Lothar shared a brief glance of surprise with each other in regards to what was revealed to them but now was not the time to handle this. If they survived they would discuss this later.

When the shadow refused to explain just what Digimon he was, Adrian just decided to use his D-Arc scanner to try and get a reading on it. However, the holographic screen that would pop up and display the Digimon information was nothing but glitching and static. This Digimon was seemingly unscannable. "Oh come on..."
Mandrake tried to tell Adrian that he and Shoutmon should leave with Lothar, and to not worry about him. Adrian rolled his eyes. "I know we just met but I'm not gonna abandon you, and I'm damn sure that Lothar isn't going to either. We've faced worse than this clown before."
Adrian glared directly at the shadow Digimon as it looked right at him, telling him to listen to Mandrake. At this point, after the initial shock big threatening Digimon like him don't intimidate Adrian anymore. "It seems you underestimate me and my partner. Whatever it is you plan to do with this Wizardmon, I'm not going to let you do it. Ready, Shoutmon?"
"Always."
Adrian held up his left arm which housed his D-Arc wristwatch, which glowed until it seemingly caught fire. Shoutmon's eyes would catch fire as well before his entire being turned into pure fire, which grew and morphed into a brand new shape. "Shoutmon, double-warp Digivolve to... RedMagnamon!"
In place of Shoutmon was a new, much more powerful looking dragonoid Digimon. His scales were red, and he was wearing golden armor on his head, chest, wrists and feet. He stared down at the shadow Digimon with a great rage in his eyes.

Adrian's words didn't seem to so much as move the shadow digimon even when Shoutmon became RedMangnadramon. Despite the dragon's magnificent appearance, it was a mega digimon. A look of boredom appeared in the glowing red eyes of the shadowy being before he said "A mega? How dull of you to think you can deal with me. Surely Lothar has mentioned that I am a super mega and I doubt Mandrake and Lothar can even reach the mega level."
Then he turned his gaze on Mandrake before stretching his arm out toward the Wizardmon. The arm moved swiftly seeming to be made of the shadows themselves before a clawed hand swatted Mandrake's staff out of his hands. Next thing Mandrake knew was being backhanded and laying sprawled on his side dazed but still conscious. It was obvious the creature held back his blow to Mandrake. "Stay right where you are, Mandrake, and maybe I'll make Lothar's end quick and merciful."
"You do know it's rude to talk about someone in the room like they aren't here." Lothar growled before he said "Leomon digivolve to GrapLeomon!" Now as GrapLeomon Lothar seemed to take on some machine traits but he knew that one on one the shadow digimon could still make short work of him. Despite wracking his brain for a solution nothing was coming to mind.
Mandrake, meanwhile, groaned as he remembered something about this creature but did RedMagnamon have the means to utilize what could be the being's biggest known weakness?
