BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Luneth the sleepy Hackmon slowly opened his blue eyes at the sound of his phone's alarm going off. It would take a few moments for his vision to fully become clear. His eyes would then see a nice-looking but very plain dorm room around him. There were a couple of superhero posters plastered on the walls but otherwise it looked just the same as it did when he first moved in. Giving a big yawn, Luneth would rub his eyes after pulling them out of his tangled mess of a cloak and give his first thoughts of the day...
I'm hungry... Curse that dream about swiming in a bowl of ramen.
Yeah, that's pretty much what most would expect from someone who had just woken up early in the morning. Especially a middle school student like himself. Luneth would have quite a bit of trouble getting out of bed this morning as he tossed and turned in his sleep so much that he was now rolled up in his cloak. He eventually found his way out thankfully, and hopped out of bed before activating his holosuit, giving him the form of a thirteen or fourteen year old Japanese male with medium length brown hair, wearing a white T-Shirt and red boxers. "Alright, I suppose it's time to get ready for the day now."
The now disguised Digimon would then open his door into the hallway, heading down in the direction that the bathroom was in. He wasn't paying much attention to what was in front of him so he was thrown for a loop when he suddenly bumped into another boy in front of him, causing him to fall right onto his behind. "OW! What the-?"
"Watch where you're going, dickhead," the kid in front of him said with quite a lot of salt added in. Luneth looked ahead in front of him - there was a LONG line of boys waiting to use the bathroom. Luneth groaned, as this was definitely going to take a while.
"Maybe things would've been easier if I lived with Mom and Rory..."
Luneth almost didn't make it, the line was moving pretty slowly and his need to go grew and grew, and he wasn't the only one. At least three kids in front of him were doing a full on potty dance right about now. He didn't know what god shined down on him that day but he was thankful that it was finally his turn and a stall was open. The disguised Hackmon would then take care of his hygeine-related business, showering, using the bathroom, applying deodorant, all that fun stuff. Once he was done with his shower, he would step out and immediately slip on the wet floor below him, falling down right back onto his behind. This was practically a daily occurance at this point, despite how carefully he would try to keep his footing after a shower. "Dammit..."
After recovering from that, Luneth put his sleepwear back on and went back to his room to get changed. In fact, he could've sworn that the line for the bathroom we walked past was even longer than before, with even more kids doing the potty dance. He rolled his eyes, wondering why he ever thought it was a good idea to live in the dorms. Oh well, he was stuck here now, so he might as well put up with it for as long as he can. He changed into his school uniform, which consisted of a dark green jacket over a white button-up shirt and tan slacks, with his shoes being his usual white tennis shoes until he can get his school shoes on. He even took some time to fix up his hair a bit, adding a short pony-tail so that his hair didn't get in the way of his face.
Bah-DING!
Luneth blinked when he heard his phone go off, which was still sitting on his nightstand. He walked over to pick it up, only to find that he had gotten a message from his friend Kaya Matsui. Opening the message, his phone would then see a picture of both Kaya and her Hawkmon partner Hawkeye each with a pancake resting on their heads, syrup and powdered sugar running down their faces as well. Hawkeye looked way less amused about this than Kaya did in the photo.
K: [were having flying pancakes this morning. hbu?]
Luneth couldn't help but laugh as he responded back.
L: [Do I even want to know how this happened?]
K: [Probably not. ]
L: [You can just tell me the story at school later. I recommend cleaning up first though, unless for some reason you *want* everyone to question your life choices.]
K: [My life choices are perfect. Ttyl! <3]
Luneth's heart fluttered a bit at that heart emote. The 'mon sort of absolutely had a crush on Kaya, so this reaction wasn't unwarranted at all. He couldn't stand there forever just appreciating the emoji, though; Luneth still had to eat breakfast himself! Pocketing his phone and grabbing his school bag, Luneth made his way to the dorm's dining area, ignoring practically every other kid on the way there. Though he couldn't help overhearing a group of three boys talking as he ate his "tamago kake gohan" breakfast (which wouldn't fill him up and leave him rather hungry still, but it was far better than nothing.)
"I saw this really weird lookin' kid the other day. He was pretty short and had this yellow hat and green jacket, but I coulda sworn his face looked like a bug's! And he had claws too!"
"Have you been watching too much sci-fi lately, Kaito?"
"No way! The guy he was with was weird too, his hair was blue and pink and it was spiking everywhere!"
"So what, he looked like a Yugioh character? People in this city do that all the time. That little kid was probably wearing a mask or something, y'know?"
Luneth chuckled at this discussion, clearly they had seen a Digimon wearing a not-so-great disguise out in the wild. Possibly two. Ah well, didn't matter, it just amused Luneth how easy it was for a Digimon to hide in plain sight in Tokyo...
The first thing Luneth would see upon opening the sliding door to enter his classroom would be the red water balloon soaring right towards his face before it hit him, exploding and dousing his entire face with water. He glared at the duo by the windows who had shot the water balloon at him with a slingshot: Takeshi and Haido, two of his classmates who seemed to like the very idea of seeing Luneth look at stupid as possible.
"Lu's defintiely got the drip now," Takeshi said in a mocking tone, "but I think he's got his vocabulary mixed up!"
"You seriously could not think of anything more original than shooting a water balloon at me?" Luneth asked in a deadpan-slash-aggravated tone. Honestly, dumb pranks like this were just an average day with these pricks and they were usually harmless enough. Suddenly Luneth could smell something weird, and his eyes widened.
...this isn't water, is it?
"You two are so immature," a familar voice was heard from the back of the classroom. The three boys watched as Kaya Matsui marched from her desk and get in between the boys, glaring at Takeshi and Haido specifically. "Do you get some kind of kick out of seeing Luneth suffer? He's never bothered you two before!"
"Whoa, you're seriously taking his side, Matsui?" Takeshi asked in a confrontal tone.
"The guy's a total dweeb," Haido said, "all he does is sit in the corner and study, all we're doing is trying to get him to liven up a little bit, that's all."
"What it looks like to me is that you're pulling prank after prank on him after he's done nothing to deserve it," Kaya argued with them some more. "I've tried overlooking it before but it's been happening for way too long. If you don't cut it out I'm going to tell the teacher what you've been doing... WITH PROOF."
"Kaya..." Luneth muttered, a slight blush forming on his cheeks as Takeshi and Haido both looked pouty as they each went to their desks, which of course were right next to each other. Neither one looked particularly happy, and it would probably be best to keep an eye on those two for now.
"You doing alright?" Kaya asked as she walked up to her friend.
"Yeah, I am... you didn't have to do that for me, Kaya."
"Well I wanted to. You're a good person, you don't need assholes like Takeshi and Haido ruining your mornings like that." Kaya then got a good whiff of Luneth. "...is that what I think it is that they threw at you?"
"I believe so, unfortunately."
Then almost like a sudden personality shift, Kaya turned her head towards the two boys. Anyone looking at her could've sworn that her eyes lit on fire at that very moment. "YOU TWO ARE SO DISGUSTING!"
"OH SHIT!" Takeshi and Haido yelled as they leaped out of their seats and ran past Luneth out the door, prompting Kaya to chase after them. Luneth popped his head through the door and watched his crush chase down his two bullies down the hallway, both completely afraid of her. Luneth sighed...
"She is so awesome."
It wouldn't be too long before lunchtime for Luneth and Kaya's class began, allowing them to head down to the cafeteria. Thankfully before that point Luneth had managed to dry himself off and get rid of the funky smell that had emanated from him, thanks to the fact that he decided to bring some spray-on cologne that Adrian's mother had gifted him some time ago. Sure the smell was a tad bit strong, but at least it smelled nice. Anyways, the cafeteria was packed as usual, but there were still a couple of completely empty tables. Luneth would bring his lunch tray over to one of the empty ones and sit down. But as he looked up, he saw that Kaya was starting to sitting down at the exact same table as well. The girl smiled at Luneth as she said, "I was wondering if you wanted some company for lunch today."
Luneth's eyes went wide and his character model seemed to get less detailed as he stammered to find the right words. "Oh-uh-uh-uh okay, yeah, th-that would be great!"
Kaya couldn't help but laugh at his goofy reaction. Her lunch was fairly simple; the barbecue beef combo with rice, miso soup and some pickled veggies. Nothing too fancy, and fairly cheap as well. She was curious at what Luneth was having for lunch today, so she looked down at his tray as she took a sip of her drink. Though upon seeing what was on it, she nearly did a spit take, causing her to choke on her drink for a bit. "H-HOW MUCH DID YOU SPEND ON THAT?!"
On Luneth's tray was the following: a bowl of udon, two tempura shrimp, a squid tempura, a chicken tempura, a yam tempura, a pudding dessert, and a bottle of milk soda. This was far more than enough for an average middle school student to eat, so Kaya was definitely surprised. "This would all cost over a thousand Yen, wouldn't it? This would be enough for a Digimon to eat... Are you REALLY gonna be able to eat all that?"
"Uff curth I cun," Luneth said with the chicken tempura already in his mouth as if it was nothing, causing Kaya to sweatdrop.
"Don't talk with your mouth full," Kaya reminded him before she took a few bites of rice. "Do you order this much for lunch every day?"
"Not really. I ordered far less than I usually do today."
"W-W-What?! Are your parents like super rich or something?!?!"
"No, but I have other methods of support. For example, my, erm... grandparents. They tend to give me money for food usually, alongside my parents as well."
"You know, you never told me much about your family before," Kaya said in observation. "What are they like?"
"Well, there's not much to tell really," Luneth responded, taking another bite of food. That was a complete and utter lie, but hey, he was already this far deep into the hole. "My mother is an ex-military soldier and my father's a wanna-be musician-slash-fighter. He, uh... fights competetively these days."
"That's not your usual pair up, isn't it? Your parents must be pretty loving to you, huh?"
Luneth smiled. "Yeah... yeah, I guess they are. It's kind of hard for all of us right now. I insisted on coming to school in Tokyo, so we're all kinda split up right now. Father and I are living in Shibuya while Mother and my brother are back home. It's kinda hard, I'll admit. I miss my mother and my brother so much. We don't get many opportunities to visit. Sometimes I wonder if I should just go back home, you know? My entire family able to live together again, instead of being split up because I wanted to come to school here."
Kaya thought a bit before providing her own answer to Luneth's dilemma. "Well... if you never moved here then you and I probably wouldn't have met, right? And you wouldn't have found out about Digimon in the end because of me, meaning you never would've met Hawkeye or Nanami, or even Mocha and Cream... and yes, you can take that as you will." Luneth and Kaya shared a laugh before she continued. "Look, what's done is done, and whatever you decide next I'll support you on. I mean, I'd love it if you stayed here, you're one of my bestest friends. But I completely understand if you feel like you should go back home. We can always stay in touch by texting or Discord, right?"
"Yeah... I suppose you're right."
"Of course I am," Kaya joked with a slight wink. "Now I'm curious to see if you can really eat all that without feeling way too full afterwards!"
And so, Luneth and Kaya would finish their lunches together, discussing various topics with each other ranging from the semi-serious to the absolutely absurd. As their conversation went on, Luneth felt a nagging sensation in the back of his mind. He knew he was lying to Kaya, withholding the fact that he was indeed a Digimon as well. He had no reason for this of course; he knew that she had her own Digimon partner, but what was stopping him from just telling her the truth? Maybe... maybe he just wanted to see what it felt like to have a friend who believed he was human? Regardless, he knew that he had to tell her at some point... but he was afraid. Afraid of what she might do after all this time if he tells her. Would she still be his friend? Would... other feelings still be on the table? Before Luneth knew it, his lunch had been finished and the bell rang, signalling the students to go back to class.
Later that night, Luneth groaned as his stomach growled for the fifth time while he was working on his Japanese History homework alone in his dorm room, still in his holosuit. His previous meals had been fairly light for his standards, and his dinner was just a pitiful apple. He was a growing Digimon who had inherited his father's appetite, and that appetite was fighting back against him right now.
Damn, I could go for some of Mother's cooking right now, Luneth thought as a bit of drool dropped from the side of his mouth. He couldn't handle it, he wouldn't be able to focus on his schoolwork if he was this hungry. Now would be as good a time as ever for a break, he figured. The disguised Hackmon put down his pencil and headed down to the dorm's kitchen for a little (or rather, big) snack.
Sadly, no such luck was in the cards for Luneth. Almost anything even remotely edible had already been claimed by his dormmates by this point, leaving behind the junk that not even Luneth would eat. And it was such a damn shame too, because there were some very good snacks available at one point! Luneth considered walking down to the convenience store to pick up his own snacks but not only was he out of money but it was also past curfew. The adults watching over everyone definitely wouldn't let him go out at this time.
"So I guess this means I have to go hungry tonight..." Luneth sighed in disappointment. He hated these nights with a passion, and he always had extreme food related dreams that night, like that dream about swimming in a bowl of ramen. His stomach rumbled loudly, also expressing its own disappointment. "...I suppose I could pop over to the Digital World and see if Mother is willing to cook me something." He hated bothering his mother for things like this, but he knew that she'd hate to see him go hungry. Maybe if he got desperate enough.
Right when he finished that thought however, Luneth would hear someone knock on the front door nearby. Confused, Luneth would walk over to the door and open it. Who would be visiting this late at night, anyways? He would also be confused to see a female delivery driver on the other side of the door, with what seemed to be enough food to feed about five humans. "Hi, are you Luneth, by any chance?" she asked.
"Um, yes I am..." Luneth responded in an unsure tone of voice.
"Well, you are a very lucky young man tonight! Your mother ordered all of this food and requested that it all be sent here for you today!"
Luneth blinked. "My... my mother? Was her name Skye, by any chance?"
"I believe it was! Now all of this has been paid for, and honestly this isn't even all of it." She would then put the two bags she had with her down in front of the entryway before going back to her car, and pulled out three more bags. Luneth's eyes widened and drool came from the side of his mouth... his mother ordered all this food for him?
"I believe that's everything! You and your friends enjoy," the driver would tell him before getting back into her car. Luneth would look back and forth to see if anyone was watching before he managed to grab all five bags at once, before hurrying to his room before anyone else caught him... imagine the explanation Luneth would have to give to explain why he had enough food to feed an entire group!
Once Luneth got to his room, he would set his food bags down on his coffee table before shutting and locking the door. Now feeling more comfortable, he deactivated his holosuit and stared at the food in front of him with sparkling eyes, his tail wagging rapidly and his tongue now dangling from the side of his mouth. He was so hungry, and it all smelled so good!
Oh wait, that's right...! Luneth thought. He ran over to his desk and picked up his D-Terminal. He had to send Skye a message before he ate, it would just be rude otherwise if he didn't since this was all Skye's doing, after all!
[Hello, Mother. The delivery human just stopped by with all that food you ordered for me. Thank you so much, I truly do appreciate it. I know I haven't visited you or Rory for quite a while, but I promise I will make more time in the future to come down to the Digital World to say hi. Thank you again for the food. Love, Luneth.
P.S. ...is this food delivery going to be a regular thing?]
After sending the message and putting the D-Terminal back on the desk, Luneth's stomach growled once more, getting even more impatient now that food was in the same room. The Hackmon sighed as he patted his belly, looking at the five paper bags. "Thanks for the food," he would finally announce before opening up the packaging and digging right on in!
