She had been studying for these exams for quite some time. Her grades had been steady and she was pleasantly surprised at how amicable people were being now that she had been performing and outperforming others with her meiphemon form. Sure did it suck that it left her tired a lot? Yes indeed. But she was happy with a lot of what was going on with her.
But there was this gnawing sensation at the back of her head that she was meant for something else and was skilled in something else. In her earliest days she had spent her time as an assassin. Working with a group to take down evil and terrible people that were spending their time hurting those without the power to act.
She had to admit to herself that she missed it; that she missed the thrill of the hunt and helping those in need through and over a fist. Perhaps it wasn’t so bad to her? The meiphemon sighed a bit and closed her book. Those thoughts had been popping up more as of the last few days. She couldn’t really place when they started and she wasn’t entirely sure what to make of them.
Getting up and stepping over to her window she’d stare out of it. Arms at her sides and sort of just… wondered to herself what she should do. She liked working on various patients and healing them but… Her hands trembled and she’d look down at them. She also had the power to make things right before people could get hurt. Closing her eyes she felt conflicted; that self same confliction that froze her to the spot.
She wasn’t sure what to do again; she had lost her way when her mother died and barely regained her ability to step back onto this path. Even with her da’s help she was struggling in practice. Were her hands made for healing? For killing? She was struggling to figure that out. She’d sigh a bit and shake her head slowly.
”I’m lost ma… and I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do.”

Stress.
Stress often made one question what they were for, and second-guess if they were making the right choices. And as Holly had her exams coming up, this remained doubly true for her. Thoughts of her colored past would inevitably force themselves to the front of her mind, distracting her, leading her every-which-way except for the goal at hand. It was perfectly normal to go through, and as the sun started to set over the islands of Luminas, the Meiphemon would be left a lot of time to think.
... Which may have distracted her from her surroundings. As the sun started to set low, as the normal shadow would be cast from her windowsill, something dark would slip into those shadows, right in the corner of her vision. A rat, a leaf, maybe? Hard to tell - but her shadow would give a small dark pulse, fading right to its normal color afterwards - something brief enough to be considered a trick of the light, or maybe a flicker of a branch outside.
Maybe Holly was tired.

Stress was one way of putting it and the meiphemon had it in buckets. The schooling was harsh and many instances of it would make her question just about everything she did. Her eyes continued to trace over the landscape out of the window and she couldn’t help but gently rub at her eyes. She had privacy in buckets too and plenty of time to mull things over. She wasn’t paying attention to her shadows and the moment that was cast made her just rub her eyes again.
Seeing nothing of it she’d sigh a bit and shake her head. Jeez was she really that tired that she was seeing things? She’d sit on her bed and stare at the floor; slowly rubbing at her eyes again. Maybe she was really tired? Maybe she was exhausted. Maybe she just needed to rest? The meiphemon shook her head again and slowly laid back in her bed. Staring at her desk for a moment and sighing as she eventually closed her eyes.
”Maybe… I can sleep a little early today… No point in burning myself out.”
The meiphemon felt herself start to doze off after mumbling to herself. Her hands folding across her stomach and her breath fading into small controlled but restful bursts. She was a light sleeper at first which was the bright side of her training; but the longer she slept the heavier she’d fall into it. Due to her… ‘slothful’ nature in this form sleep came easy.

”Maybe… I can sleep a little early today… No point in burning myself out.”
As it was, probably a good idea. Holly would drift off, slowly, into a nice, deep sleep, one that might have felt warmer than usual. And as her mind stirred, and as Holly started to dream, her own dark shadow would start to envelop her like a blanket, the eye of a familiar Shademon watching over her.
Guiding her along.
It would be hard to know if Holly would even remember it in the morning, but Holly's dream that night would be of her as a Meicoomon, practicing on a balance beam in front of Dark, the Impmon, as well as the Ravemon. It would be of her piecing together maps in the planning room - and it would be of her pouncing, trying to catch Shade's eye as it slipped around the room, a sort of training exercise.
Oddly happy memories, considering what they related to - perhaps of a time that Holly thought of them all as family...

Holly’s breathing stayed even and with her drifting into sleep the meiphemon couldn’t help but feel the presence of something else engulf her. Though it didn’t rouse her from her slumber nor did it seem to worry lily all too much given the both of them were fast asleep.
With her dream being so real and being so clear to her holly had a bit of trouble when she woke up. Slowly sitting up and rubbing her eyes again. They were good memories; good moments and she sat there for a time staring at the wall as she could… remember everything of those early days.
She felt a few tears streak down her cheek and she’d reach to brush them away. It was a time past; a time where she… she didn’t do that anymore and she wasn’t even sure if that’s what she wanted. Slipping her arms around her legs the meiphemon would hug her knees to her chest. Lily was still fast asleep and she’d stare at her books. She had read through… eight of them now. Another nine would need to be read to by the end of the next week.
”...Nine books… eleven days?”
She felt that earnest tired sensation creeping up again and she felt her eyelids grow heavy again. The happy and familiar thoughts of that place stirred again and she’d rub at her face with either hands. A small wracking sob before she felt the bliss of sleep take her again. She wasn’t sad so much as she missed the ones she called family very dearly. Knowing that only two were alive hurt more than anything.
Eleven days... it's fine.

Nine books, eleven days, as well as class and study sessions on top of it all? Holly had a full plate!
She was close to her goal, after all, and even as her thoughts and dreams leaned towards the past, she couldn't lose focus on what was right in front of her. During the day, the Shademon kept itself hidden and silent, helping her out in more 'unseen' ways, like preventing her from stubbing a toe or helping to find just what book she was looking for. During the day, she'd be busy, and during the night, when she finally dozed off, those happy dreams would return.
Memories of Dark. Of the Peckmon, of the Lobosmon, of the Ravemon... at least for a couple days. But as exams neared, her dreams would take an interesting shift, instead helping to focus her on the studies at hand, 'reviewing the books' as she slept, with her focus entirely on the pages in front of her.
The specter wanted to help, and wanted to guide, while remaining unseen. And honestly, if Holly was thinking through it clearly, she might have caught on to what was going on...
... Or maybe she had her thoughts completely on her tests. Her finals were fast coming up, after all!

A full plate indeed, one that she was willing to put for an extreme amount of effort forward for. When waking up she would get right back to working on her goal. Studying and going through the books at a fairly rapid pace. Only happy with them once she had read them twice… maybe three times over. It was hard to concentrate when just getting up with those happy dreams and her wanting to go back to sleep. Exhaling a little bit she’d get right into it.
Guided along and helped, she didn’t even seem to realize this was going on. But maybe it was because of her extreme passion for her work. With her dreams shifting the work of the books in hand and with one final after another the meiphemon managed to knock them all out of the park. Eventually sitting down on her bed with a small sigh.
”...All that fuss for just a bunch of tests. Get to see my grades next week too…”
She hadn’t caught on for a number of reasons; the most pressing being that of her concentration being on the finals. So she would with a firm and happy sigh lay back down. Her eyes drifted up to the ceiling. It was now the weekend and she could do as she pleased. Which meant for her?
Sleep. Sleep sleep and Eat a bunch once she woke up. She had a lot of recharging to do and she wasn’t about to waste that!

The tests were behind her, and Holly was left tired - and the Meiphemon had an entire weekend to sleep and recover. Mikemon would probably want to celebrate with her after the grades were all said and done, and she'd soon have to spread her wings and go out into the broader world.
As Holly would start to doze off for the weekend, the dreams would start to turn back to how they were at the start of the week, back to her time with 'them'. However, this time, it was not a happy memory. This one was of a Meicoomon, shuddering after her first job, wrapping her arms around her knees, whispering to the Shademon in her shadow.
"Please, take it away. I don't want it. I don't want it!"
With those words spoken, the Shademon's incorporeal body would envelop the Meicoomon's smaller frame, as the Meiphemon, watching the dream, saw it all in third person. As for what followed?
Every job.
Every single repressed thought. Each difficulty, each success, each failure - though Guru had unlocked them before, they were once more pushed to the forefront, in front of the current Holly's more mature eyes. The stress, her accomplishments, the good-and-bad balanced in her head - it would call come back to her...
... And Iris' voice would echo in her head.
"I've held onto this until you were ready. The real you. The capable you."
The memories would shift - and Holly would be reminded of the effects of holding herself back. Of Iko not even breaking a sweat, throwing her down against the mat. Of Holly only able to get 'angry' in response to a threat, and of all the pain that came along with it.
"You hold yourself back. You know you can do more - but you threw it away. Why?"

She was happy and content with the answer she gave and she knew that her father would want to celebrate with her. She was in fact looking forward to it when she got her reports. Whenever that was. She was glad to be sleeping and glad that she could rest.
But the memories that were good were eventually followed by what made her change her mind originally. She was forced to watch in the third person what she had done before. What she had asked before. She stared in it; in a somewhat controlled dream state. She knew she was dreaming and she knew that she could see and hear and interact. She saw the younger version of herself; lone, afraid and uncertain. The meiphemon bit her lip.
She was beyond capable at this point; she knew what strength was and knew how to handle herself both in and out of battle. She had matured to a point that even the others around her likely couldn’t have anticipated or seen. Hearing that voice made holly’s eyes widen a bit.
Iris.
She knew who was showing her this sort of thing and… well the memories followed she would see the fight against Iko. Being thrown down to the mat and her anger was apparent back then. Back when she was working and worried. Her dangerous self was… something originally she didn’t want anyone to see. Anyone to deal with. She’d fold her arms and sigh a bit; flicking her ears a bit.
”Because I knew I could be different. That I could change how people looked at me. At meis. But In that struggle to do so I only ended up fueling my own worries and anger at myself. I know I can do more and I threw it away because what I did didn’t feel right back then.”
Holly gritted her teeth in response to that and closed her eyes; though she didn’t wake she’d stir in the real and the meiphemon rubbed at her head slightly.
”...are you here Iris or is this just my cores messed up way of trying to see where I want to go again?”

She threw it away because it didn't feel right.
Iris listened, the Shademon's voice calm, his presence warm as it had been for the entire week. The Meiphemon could speak honestly, and let her thoughts be known in the safety of this dream. Even as she stirred on the outside, Iris would help her to relax, taking the edge and frustration off of her thoughts.
"I am here. I've been here this entire week. Watching. Seeing the one that you became."
In that dream, Iris' voice continued to echo in her head. "I know it very well, Holly. Your internal thoughts, your fears. We were very close in those few months, and your shadow was one that was warm, and comfortable to rest in. But I confess, we were naive. We were impatient."
The memory was replaced with a blank space, Iris no longer wishing to distract. And before her, the shadow would stretch out, separating from her frame, standing separate from her.
"But I feel it. Those instincts never left your claws. That potential still remains, even deep in your core. What you have seen since than has not dulled it in the slightest. So I've come to ask."
"And you already know the question."

The meiphemon stood there; watching what amounted to ancient history. She could feel the difference between her and this lost; yet innocent meicoomon. A look of infinite tenderness split her face and the dream seemed to pause as she gently rubbed at the top of the once holly. She’d stare at them while Iris’ voice echoed through her head.
He had been here the entire week; watching her and seeing who she had become. Like how sometimes parents or siblings have to go away for a long time to return to something they didn’t know. She’d bite her lip again and flick her ears. Her internal thoughts and her fears were instead rather well grounded. Eventually the dream vanished and she was left slowly closing her fist. Staring down at it while the Shademon talked.
”I was naive and impatient too. Wanted to make a name for myself and wanted to do something that I could pick.”
The instincts that never left and that the potential was still there. A powerful instinct of a killer but there was something there that was far stronger than those instincts. The will to move on if she wanted to. Iris knew this and he asked this question at such a strange opportune time.
”They were burned into me at a young age, even now years later I still have trouble doing some things. If anything the stuff I’ve seen has strengthened my instincts and strengthened my resolve.”
Holly slowly folded her arms and turned her head to look around; frowning a bit. She had a fair number of questions. Simple ones in fact.
”Lets say I say no. What do you do? Vanish and never come back? Try to persuade me otherwise?”
She’d unfolder her arms and then gesture around; her control over her own mind was easily seen. Even with Iris’ way of manipulating it he’d find her tug very powerful and the scene would shift to that of the room they would be in. Holly taking a seat on her ‘bed’.
”And if I say yes where do we go from there? I just spent the last few years studying to be a doctor. You can’t really expect me to just… give that effort up unless you have something to exchange for it.”

Naive, impatient, uncertain.
These were all words that could be used to describe the old Holly, but not the new one. Right now, Holly was able to calmly reflect on her own thoughts, and consider everything about the situation presented to her. She was so calm, that she was even able to control her own space, the 'white void' soon being replaced by her room, her own bed.
What if she said no? What if she said yes?
The Shademon, still tied to Holly's shadow, would approach, its body wrapping like a wisp several times around Holly's own. "What we do is for the benefit of the world around us, to keep it a safer place from tyrants and would-be monsters. Why would we dissuade you from your own path? A doctor."
The Shademon's eye gave a blink. "One who could doubtless save countless lives by their own merit, one who could avert or recover from the same disasters we try to prevent. We would never ask that you give up your training, nor give up everything that you learned to reach this point."
Iris held himself close.
"You would no longer be an apprentice, but an equal. It would not be your assignments, but your decisions. And, most likely, you would maintain your position as a doctor in Luminas - or wherever you would end up." That part, Iris could not be entirely certain of. Such was the way of their practice.
As for if she said no? Iris seemed to consider it for a moment. "I may simply retire to your shadow. Boss cannot perform these jobs alone..."

The meiphemon’s control of her space also stemmed from the incredible power that now resided in her core. The level of stability that only an apostle could manage; even a fledgling one such as herself. She’d stare at the floor, rubbing at her chin and feeling that shademon wrapping around her the meiphemon’s body seemed to relax just a bit. Even if he was connected the one that really held power here would have been holly. She’d flick her ears and tilt her head.
”The issue is the oath that I would have to take upon finishing my graduation. A doctor without that oath isn’t as trusted as ones without it.”
But hearing that they wouldn’t avert her training? That they would like her to have it made the meiphemon’s eyes shift and she seemed to hesitate. No longer an apprentice? But an equal? It wouldn’t be assignments but a decision? The meiphemon furrowed her brow further and she found herself gritting her teeth.
It was a tempting offer and she wasn’t sure what to say. It would keep money flowing in, it would allow her to train Amber competently and consistently. It’d offer her many other venues to gather resources from. The meiphemon sighed after a little bit, reaching up to gently run a hand along the shademon’s shadow. Her own shadow. Though it was wrapped around her she didn’t ‘truly’ feel it.
”Hmm. Your offer is very tempting Iris.”
There was a but in there wasn’t it? The protecting from tyrants and would be monsters. They wouldn’t ask her to give up what she wanted to do but there would be some conflict of interest. Some training would overlap and she’d hum a bit.
”You also have been softening me up for the last week or two, you sly dog. I was wondering why the sudden influx of those dreams.”
The meiphemon couldn’t help but chuckle and really the memories of those times were so very sweet to her. She’d shift a bit; moving to lay down and she’d sigh softly.
”So tell me then. Where am I heading? Or are you going to whisk me away while I’m asleep to go meet Boss?”

"I see no issue with taking such an oath. The skills in one hand shouldn't impede the intents of another."
Iris' view was optimistic, but perhaps not entirely rooted in reality. Indeed, if this 'secret' life were ever uncovered, Holly might not be able to get a solid footing in a medical career ever again. It may come to the point where the Meiphemon would have to choose what was really important to her, whether that would be days or years in the future.
At least for the moment, however, Holly seemed receptive to Iris' offer. The Shademon remained gently coiled around the Meiphemon's frame, even chuckling at the comment given to him. "I meant to bring up these questions sooner, but your mind was far too occupied. I figured a bit of comfort would help to relax your mind going forward - as well as keeping those books in the front of your head." Naturally moving along with Holly, tied to her shadow, the Shademon heard that last comment.
'Where to'?
"If you'll lend me an ear..." And, if given permission, that room would be replaced with the vision of a street on the far side of Luminas. To a single alleyway, and to a small set of stairs leading down to an old, metal door.
"You will knock. And when asked, the password to entry is, 'A Dandelion'."

”The issue is that the hippocratic oath usually stops this sort of thing dead in it’s tracks Iris.”
The meiphemon gave a shrug and she’d lean back till she had fallen over onto her bed. Truth be told either job was something she could do quite well and eventually she would have to choose… or have that choice be made for her by others that would be less flexible.
Feeling the shadow around her frame the meiphemon couldn’t help but feel relaxed. Honestly one would normally be panicking at feeling a shademon so close but with holly she had gotten used to it. Flicking her ears she’d glance at him.
”Well I appreciate it. I did nail the tests after all.”
Holly blinked a bit when asked if iris could have one of her ears. Flicking it and leaning to the shademon a bit. She’d let control of the space slip so he could show her what he wanted to. A single alleyway and that small set of stairs leading to the old metal door. She’d smile a bit and nod her head at hearing that password.
”A Dandelion… Quaint.”
It wouldn’t be hard to remember; there were… seven different individuals that Iris had just told technically. Herself, Lily, Jade and her clones. The meiphmon leaned back and sighed in her ‘bed’ after the vision faded.
”So… now that I know where and who… I have to ask what do we do in the meantime? I’m tired and I don’t know if I should go anywhere this weekend.”
