After a harrowing journey that led her to find her first spirit and begin her new life as a sometimes-traveler across the Digital World, Misaki mostly meandered from place to place, as if this dangerous world full of monsters was treated as a casual stroll. She supposed it was nice that she could spend some time here and still have plenty of time back home. Plus Misaki was a city girl, through and through, so she never got the opportunity to explore the wilderness. It was like getting to travel without having to take time off of work, so all in all, she figured getting a Digivice was a pretty chill deal.
Which led her to this path, in relatively obscure place somewhere in the Eastern Timberlands. It traveled along a river as she followed it and just took in the scenery that was both calming, yet bizarre. There were trees, yet several of them had electrical sockets of varying sizes with nothing plugged into them at their bases. Misaki was half-tempted to stick a coin in one just to see what would happen, but she eventually had to convince herself otherwise. But she was definitely gonna test it out one day.
And as she went further down, she came across an old-looking wooden sign, yet it seemed to have a digital display that stated You are now entering Maidenbrook. Population: 112 With a curious glance, Misaki looked ahead, but didn't see any domiciles or any random villagers nearby. Perhaps they were further down. Welp, she supposed she should go meet the locals.
And two things happened the moment she stepped past the sign. Firstly, the display on the sign changed, now stating that the population now read "113". And while that was neat and all, the far more interesting thing happened to Misaki's D-Tector, as it came to life and displayed an arrow heading straight forward.
Interesting. Misaki was heading in that direction anyways, but it seemed like there was something that wanted her to go there. So she kept walking ahead in silence, wondering what was gonna be there. But was there really no one else nearby? Maybe, but maybe not!

"Ughh, dangit. Lost again." Clayton rubbed his head for a few moments as he walked through the plains, holding his D-tector in his left hand Clay looked like he had been through a fight, his clothes were a bit messed up too. Shaking his head for a moment Clayton put his D-tector away in his pocket as he started walking in a random direction. "Guess there's no going around it, if I want to beat that spirit I'm gonna hafta find another one." Did all spirit tamers have it this rough?
Clayton had been coming around this area for a bit now, trying his hand at passing his supposed spirits 'trial' which apparently meant beating them in one on one combat, which was a lot easier said then done when Clayton only had access to a rookie spirit and Zu. Speaking of the Zubamon she was currently in her sword form on Clayton's back, held up with a pretty simple makeshift holder. She had gotten a bit roughed up during the fight and was simply healing in that form. Didn't hafta worry about her cutting anything since he wasn't a digimon the blade was completely dull on his back.
But with that in his mind Clayton had realized something important, the fact that he was totally lost at the moment. looking around he realized he got turned around after the fight and was now on a path near a river. "Wait, guess I got turned around. Don't remember a river being around here..." Clayton stopped for a moment scratching the side of his head, unknowingly standing directly in the path of another spirit tamer.

Misaki continued to follow the path parallel to the river, still heading in the same direction that her D-Tector seemed to want her to. She had to admit that she was curious what exactly she was going to see whenever she got there. Truth be told, Misaki still didn't know much about the inner workings of how the Digital World worked. For the most part, she had just been observing it during her travels, not really getting too involved in situations unless she saw someone who needed help.
She was barely paying attention to her surroundings as she got close to another figure, nearly bumping into him in the process. She managed to pivot around the young man at the last second, taking stock of the situation. Young man, probably about the same age as Misaki, or a little younger. Really tall, though. And he looked... roughed up. A little bit down on his luck, if she could be perfectly honest. And... did he have a sword on his back? It looked like it was pure gold, too. Wasn't that supposed to be really inefficient, or something? Still, to meet another human on her travels wasn't entirely expected, a human with a weapon instead of a Digimon was a little bit rarer.
Still, she wanted to follow the thingy on her Digivice. But... she couldn't exactly ignore this guy, either. So she gave him a short wave, then pointed towards a nearby tree stump. She walked over to it and took a seat, then patted the spot next to her as an invitation to join her. Then she pulled out a simple riceball and a bottle of water and held it up to him.

Clayton was pretty distracted at the moment, he was trying to mentally make a note of where he was at the moment and where he went on accident. Arms crossed as he thought a bit to himself not even noticing another person walking up towards him, considering he was standing in the middle of a pathway that was probably gonna happen eventually anyway. He did notice when the person in question pivoted around him, breaking him out of his thoughts as he looked over at them. Surprisingly it was a fellow human who seemed around the same age as himself, shorter then him but Clayton had long since gotten used to being taller then most.
She gave him a short wave, which the teen returned alongside smile, realizing he had been standing in the middle of the path. "Ahh, sorry about that." He probably didn't need to apologize since nothing bad happened he still did, felt like the right thing to do.
She seemed to point over to a stump nearby, sitting down and patting the spot next to her. Taking the hint Clayton walked over and sat down taking the sword off his back and placing it right next to him. Then the girl seemed to offer a riceball and water to the teen, making him realize he actually hadn't eaten anything before coming here. "Oh, thanks."
Taking the two items he realized he hadn't introduced himself. "Oh right, my name's Clayton Herron, Nice to meet you."

She smiled politely as the young man sat down next to him. He took her offering, keeping her smile up while realizing she was giving her lunch to a complete stranger. Well... there was probably some... berries or something she could eat from, if she got really hungry later. And it was the Digital World, after all! Maybe she'd find a toaster with some kind of delicious pastry inside, or something!
But thoughts about future meals aside, the young man introduced himself as Clayton Herring. Most definitely not a Japanese name. Certainly explained the height. Didn't really explain the sword, though. But whatevs. Probably wasn't important. Naturally, it was time for Misaki to say her name now, but she couldn't exactly do that, now could she?
So instead she pulled out her phone and began typing onto it furiously. Then the robotic text-to-speech voice spoke out for her.
"My name is Misaki. It is nice to meet you also."
Another rush of her thumbs, and another message not long after, and she looked over to him with a concerned expression.
"You don't look very well. How are you feeling?"

Clayton was a little bit surprised when the stranger pulled out her phone and started typing on it, was, was she texting someone? Looking something up? Both of those would be pretty weird considering she's the one who called him over. However after a few moments of typing he heard a robotic voice come out from the phone introducing the girl. That also caught him a bit off guard but Clayton elected to not question the reason and just take it in stride with just a smile and a nod.
Then the next question came about Clayton's current state of being a bit beaten up, he had almost forgotten about that. Though seeing the concerned expression on her face Clayton just kept his smile giving her a thumbs up. "I'm fine, don't worry about me." While that was probably a lie Clayton didn't want them to worry about him.
"I'm a spirit tamer and a bit ago I was trying to get one of the totems I need. Except the spirit wants me to fight it in order to use its power and uhh." Clayton gestured to his slightly bruised body. "Yeah that didn't work out too well for me." Clayton let out a small laugh after saying that, while he was annoyed he lost he didn't seem in too bad of spirits about it.
"So what brings you to the digital world today?" He decided to ask figuring he might want to change the subject off him getting his butt kicked up and down the fields.

Clayton seemed to insist that he was fine, and Misaki slowly nodded, wondering if he was just acting tough or not. If he was banged up at all, it could have serious consequences later down he line if he didn't get himself checked out, after all! But... she wasn't exactly gonna be able to convince him of that, and it's not like Misaki had the medical knowhow to give him a proper checkup, regardless. So... hopefully it was nothing that a riceball and a bottle of water couldn't fix.
Clayton explained what he'd been doing recently, and asked Misaki what she as doing, wandering around the Digital World like this. Well, she supposed traveling alone probably wasn't the smartest or safest thing in the world, but it's what she was doing! She typed up her response in a jiffy.
"Just enjoying the scenery," She answered, then with a look of realization on her face she continued on a bit. "And forgive me for not speaking. Normally I'd use my voice, but I accidentally left it at home. Besides, My grandfather was strict with my phone usage back when I was in school, so now I'm just trying to make up for lost time," She gave a wry smile as her phone blurted out the last sentence. Hopefully he'd be able to infer what was up with her. She never did like to just outright state it. It just made her feel weird to admit, sometimes.
But that awkward feeling would have to wait, because an oddly-patterned set of footsteps approached the pair. And the maker of those footprints, a Sagittarimon, popped up a good distance away, a gleaming arrow nocked and aimed towards the humans.
"You there!" He announced in a loud, but clear voice. "Travelers have little business out this far in the Timberlands. State your business!"
Misaki gave the... centaur-like creature a bewildered glance, then held her hands up as if at gunpoint. It seemed like the right thing to do. She looked over to Clayton to do the same, giving him an expectant look. "Stating their business" wasn't exactly something in Misaki's wheelhouse!

Just enjoying the scenery huh, well that was as good an answer as any. "Heh fair enough, it is a pretty place." He hadn't really taken a moment to take in the atmosphere but from what he saw the digital world was pretty nice. Then she mentioned leaving her voice at home, then also something about her grandfather limiting her phone use. "You did huh? Man I hate when I do that." Clayton said with a small laugh, though after he gave a quick nod to affirm he did know what she was talking about. "Best get typing then if you wanna make up for lost time." Clayton joked, smiling.
Though that fun time seemed like it was soon to be unfun time as Clayton heard a, well it was some really weird footsteps so he couldn't really identify what it was. Luckily for him he didn't have to infer what it was because it was very willing to let itself known to the two of them.
Looking over at the source of the voice Clayton knew it was a digimon, what digimon he didn't really know but it didn't matter at the moment. All that mattered to him was that it was pointing an arrow at the two of them. Glancing over he saw Misaki raise her arms in surrender. Figuring it wouldn't do either of them any good to antagonize the situation Clayton did the same.
Clayton felt her look at him as the state the business line came up so Clayton decided to state some business. "We were just taking a small sit down and talking a bit. Why is this place off limits or something?" That was pretty much their business.

"As a member of Maidenbrook patrol, it's my duty to examine all potential threats to our village," The Sagittarimon still had an arrow nocked and ready as it explained. "So I'm going to be placing you both under arrest, and-"
"YOU DINGUS!" Another voice yelled out, muffled from beneath the soil. A Prairiemon popped out from underground, ramming his head into the Sagittarimon's underside. Both of them let out a grunt of pain as they recoiled from their respective damage, but the Prairiemon was the one who recovered first, turning to face Clayton and Misaki. He looked relatively harmless, save for the blades for ears and the large claws over his paws. There were several streaks of gray fur over his pelt. "So sorry about my compatriot!" He bowed his fuzzy, bladed-eared head towards the pair. "He's new to patrol, and we don't get a whole lotta humans 'round these parts! You know how it is when you're a young guard eager to prove himself!" Sagittarimon didn't say anything, just looked off obliquely in embarrassment.
Misaki nodded but frowned, having never considered what life was like as a patroller eager to prove themselves. Welp, she supposed she could try imagining what life was like walking a mile in their... clawed hooves or whatever his feet were like.
"But let us properly welcome you two to Maidenbrook!" He held up his arms, as if to display a town that wasn't quite in sight. But it was the thought that counted, Misaki supposed. "We ain't fancy like Terminus or Rosewood, but we got our own kind of hospitality, you know? Anyways, I'm Prairiemon, and this is Sagittarimon!" He gave a little bow while Sagittarimon gave the pair a cursory nod.
"If you'd like a place to rest, we'll be glad to bring you into our village! We don't got much, but we got soft beds, and warm meals!"
Misaki gave it some thought, then looked over towards Clayton. She wouldn't mind going, but if he didn't want to go, especially after essentially getting threatened by the Sagittarimon, she didn't want to leave him alone. Never split the party, right?

Well so far this day was just getting better and better for the teen, first he got his butt handed to him and now he was being arrested! "What village are you eve-" Before he could finish that thought though someone shouting 'you dingus' was, well not easy to hear but it was heard as something jolted up from the ground below right square into the digimon that was pointing an arrow at them. Clayton took a step back, eyes wide in shock at what just transpired. Slowly he let his arms go back to his side as he just looked with a confused look on his face.
"Er, you two okay?" While that probably wasn't the right thing to ask after all that transpired it felt like the right thing at the time. "I guess, well I know about being eager to prove yourself." There had been a few times in his life he felt that way, well mostly recently but hey it was a feeling all the same.
Well guess that was the village the Sagittarimon mentioned, Clayton must've missed the sign for it or something. Though getting an arrow pointed at you would qualify as 'your own kind of hospitality.' that's for sure.
While Misaki looked at Clayton he had his arms crossed thinking a bit on it, his hand wandered up to the legacy weapon on his back shaking it lightly, yeah Zu was still knocked out so rest sounded like a good idea at least.
Turning to Misaki he gave a small shrug. "I don't mind if you don't, best not to split up right?" After all it did sound interesting at the very least.

"Well that just sounds fantastic!" Prairiemon exclaimed in a cheery tone. He looked over to his partner and said, "Sagittarimon, how about you lead them to the village while I finish up my patrol, then take the rest of the day off? Things are quiet today, save for a couple of human visitors, and I'll be done in an hour or so, anyways!"
"That's... yessir..." Sagittarimon relented, turning to face the young man and woman. "Prairiemon already told you this, but I feel like it's my duty to introduce myself!" He gave a graceful bow with his almost humanoid torso before saying, "I am Sagittarimon, the Unbending Arrow! I am a volunteer patrol for Maidenbrook that allows no villainy to escape my ever-present, undaunting gaze! Be it a petty thief or the foulest of foes, I am the vigilant protector that will always... huh?" He looked over to see Clayton standing by himself, as all of a sudden, Misaki was standing right next to Sagittarimon, holding one of his metal arrows that he kept in his quiver.
"H-hey! Don't just reach into another mon's quiver like that!" He cried out in distress. Misaki grabbed the arrow with both hands, and applied as much force as she possibly could. And sure enough, the arrow didn't bend. She gestured Clayton over towards her, handing him the arrow with childish wonder. Whether the young man messed with the arrow or not, Sagittarimon yelled out, "Hey! Enough horsing around with my stuff! Let's just go into town, dammit!"
"Y'all look like yer havin' fun, so I'll leave ya to it! Seeya!" Prairiemon cried out, suddenly burrowing back down into the ground again. How he could patrol the forest while underground was a mystery, but that was what he was doing, apparently.

Well this day was seeming like it was getting a lot better, well not hard to really improve after having an arrow pointed at you and a threat to take you into custody but hey, improvement was improvement. Facing the 'Unbending Arrow' Clayton had to admit he was pretty impressed by this speech he was giving, even had a neat name as well. 'Huh, wonder if he's practiced this in the mirror or something?' Clayton thought quietly to himself as he waited for the digimon to finish, though it ended with a weird 'huh' Clayton glanced over just in time to notice Misaki was gone!
"Huh? Wow that was fast." He didn't even notice her move, yet there she was over next to the digimon that had moments ago threatened them taking an arrow out of the quiver and attempting to bend it, unsurprisingly it didn't bend. Gesturing for Clayton to come over he did so without question taking the arrow offered and looking at it with somewhat similar wonder. "Wow, I've never held an arrow before." Flipping it around in his hands he, like Misaki did, tried to bend the arrow with both hands. "Unbending arrow is a very correct name."
However the teen slightly jumped when Sagittarimon yelled at them, almost letting the arrow fly out of his hands but he quickly grabbed it before it could, that was close. "Hehehe, Yeah. Sorry about that." Clayton slowly just put the Arrow back in the quiver.

Misaki gave a quick apologetic bow towards Sagittarimon once everything got settled down, but she didn't hide the mischievous smile on her face. "Good. Well... Let's get going then!" And the Unbending Arrow himself led the pair through the woods, making sure to point out little tidbits of the forest. It was fairly unremarkable, mostly about the leaves, and what tree trunks were older than others. Overall fairly dry and uninteresting topics from someone who would clearly rather be doing something else.
Which gave Misaki some time to "converse" with Clayton for a bit. She looked him up and down curiously. She had seen people with Digimon accompanying them, and others like herself that wielded spirits, but she hadn't ever seen anyone with a weapon to defend themselves with before. Judging by the design, it looked fairly... fantastic. Probably a sword made in the Digital World. Did it have some kind of special power?
So she tapped the young man on the shoulder, pointed towards the sword on his back, and drew a question mark in the air, as if to ask, "What's up with that sword ya got there, buddy?" She didn't want to type with her phone, mostly because she didn't want the Sagittarimon to find out she wasn't really paying too much attention. She had a feeling the archer Digimon didn't like her very much at the moment.

Well at least they didn't get in too much trouble about the whole arrow thing, mentioning that it was time for them to get going Clayton just gave a simple nod and followed the digimon, while they walked he seemed to talk about little tidbits about the forest they were in which Clayton was pretty sure would be interesting to someone, sadly he wasn't that someone so most of it was just slowly tuned out of the teens mind as he followed, though he didn't want to be rude so just let him continue talking giving vague 'yeah.' and 'oh' sounds as they talked, though what about would be the furthest thing from his mind.
While he was doing that stellar bit of conversing though he felt a tap on his shoulder, glancing over at Misaki he saw her hand pointing towards his back, more specifically to Zu in sword form. "Oh this?" As he asked that Clayton reached up and took the sword off his back giving her a better look.
"Might be hard to believe but this is actually a digimon that can turn into a sword, her name is Zu. I found her in the desert stuck in some cave and pulled her free." Clayton held what should be the sharp part of the sword in his hand seemingly without care for a moment before continuing. "She's pretty much resting right now which is why she's asleep in this form. Though apparently if she's held by a human instead of a digimon the sword can't cut anything." Clayton decided not to scare her by attempting to cut himself with it and simply put the sword back on the makeshift holder he had for it on his back. "I guess I should've said something before, slipped my mind a bit. Hehe." A digimon that can turn into a sword was a pretty weird thing, he still wasn't used to it himself.

Misaki listened intently to Clayton's explanation, nodding thoughtfully as he gave his brief explanation. So there were Digimon that wielded weapons, like Sagittarimon and Prairiemon, what with their bows and claws, and there were Digimon that became weapons. Digimon seemed to literally come in all shapes and sizes!
As Misaki simply shook her head and made a dismissive wave to Clayton's apology, Sagittarimon, Clayton, and Misaki made their way through a dense section of trees to a large clearing, abundant with stone and shoddily-constructed wooden buildings. They looked large enough to house some of the larger Digimon, but not nearly large enough to make it feel comfortable. It didn't look particularly fancy, or even too hospitable, contrary to the Prairiemon's assurance earlier.
"And this Maidenbrook!" Sagittarimon exclaimed. He pointed towards a large wooden shack. "Any visitors should head over there and speak to Toucanmon. He can set you up for the night. Might even have some beds for you. And if you want anything else, just go see Chief Goatmon! He's normally over toward's the Maiden's Mausoleum over yonder..." Off in the distance, there was a large, stone building, far more expertly crafted than the other buildings here.
"And that's about it. Seeya." He shrugged and promptly walked off, apparently done with the two humans and sleeping sword. Truly the epitome of hospitality. Misaki tilted her head in curiosity over his abrupt exit, but shrugged it off fairly quickly. She held out her D-Tector again, and a primitive radar popped up, an blinking arrow pointing directly towards the Mausoleum.
Misaki nodded to Clayton, then pointed over to her direction and began to head over there. She wasn't sure if he was gonna follow, or if he wanted to find a place to rest, instead. Even so, Misaki wanted to know what her Digivice was bugging her about. And patience wasn't a virtue that the young woman possessed when it came to mysteries.
