Takashi whined softly in his sleep and rolled over in a fit before consciousness beckoned him forth. He blinked blearily and gave a sullen whimper before slowly crawling to one edge of the bed. The bathroom beckoned him, and as much as he was terrified of crossing that dark and dangerous hallway at night, he didn't really care to be in his bed with his nightmares at that very moment either. So he quietly plopped himself onto the ground and scurried across the hall to the bathroom after triple-checking to make sure no monsters were lying in wait.
He shut the door behind him as the toilet finished quietly flushing, a blessing from his parents given his frequent night terrors and trips to the bathroom, and began to toddle back to his bed when something made him pause. The drapes were blowing softly in the windows, their sheert material no hinderance to the brisk autumn air. It was a clear night out, evident thanks to the bright moonlight streaming in from the midnight sky. Something else was in the air though, a feeling that Takashi had never felt before. The pressure seemed to call to him, and Takashi found himself slipping out onto the balcony.
As he grasped the bars protecting him from the ledge with his tiny hands, he looked down and realized there were two figures standing in the streets. Even with the blessedly clear sky and brilliant moonlight, Takashi could barely make out their silhouettes as high up as he was. They both seemed to be roughly as tall as his mother, a woman whose unusual feature was how easily she towered over other women. Beyond that however, he couldn't make out much in the way of distinguishing features.
One of them held out a hand as if to beckon the other forward, something that the other figure responded to with a slashing motion of his own in clear rejection. Abruptly the pressure spiked and Takashi looked up as the sky was quite suddenly awash with a brilliant rainbow of colors the likes of which he had only seen in his coloring books or on the television. The sky itself seemed to part, shattering the captivating moment to let a true monster spill out. Like something straight out of his nightmare, Takashi stood in frozen terror as a monster fell to the ground behind one of the men.
It was truly gargantuan, dwarfing cars and vans alike as it stood on four legs that ended in three prongs. Two massive pincers hovered in the air, tensing and snapping with malice. Its outer shell was a dark grey that was splashed with odd red markings and great big wings buzzed threateningly behind it. In short, it was the pinnacle of horrible monsters and Takashi felt himself paralyzed with fear. Just seeing it from a distance, and not even being directly under its attention, was enough to make him tremble.
But not the other figure.
Somehow, without ever seeing the other figure's face or hearing his voice, Takashi knew... the other figure wasn't afraid. Amazingly, in the face of such a terrible beast, it wasn't afraid. How could anyone not be afraid of a monster like this giant one in the heart of Odaiba?! It was then that a sound, however faintly, tickled his ears. He struggled to make it out as all the electronics in the apartment suddenly began to whine and squelch while their lights strobed.
A new figure suddenly appeared in front of the monster. Even awash in moonlight and the flashing of the street lights below, this new figure was hard to make out. Its skin appeared like the pure black of night, and the armor that adorned it was similarly pitched. Here and there, patches of silver captured the light and reflected it brilliantly, helping define its shape. The two most prominent features were the massive helmet that obscured its face, with a single massive horn protruding from the end, and the truly gargantuan sword it held almost casually in one hand.
Even with such a fearsome weapon, the monster was still more than twice the size of this newcomer. Clearly the size of it gave it some manner of confidence as it began to close-in on the latest addition to the party, its titanic pincers raised and snapping with promises of terrible violence. Takashi's hands gripped the bars so tightly and he dared not blink for a possessed fear that he would miss what happened next.
At once, the black knight-like being soared over the monster's head, sword flashing and slashing. Great showers of light and sparks flew from the monster's shiny skin as the knight landed behind it; only visible for a heartbeat, the knight launched into a furious dance of swordstrikes and cracks of red lightning. Stray bands of lightning arced between lightposts and cars, leaving strobing lights and flaming wrecks where they strayed.
The monster roared in agitation and pain, stomping around wildly in an attempt to stay balanced. Whole bike stands and kiosks disappeared under its mammoth feet, and cars were crunched with hardly an effect. It flailed desperately, its pincers glowly a sickly green. Once, the edge of a pincer caught the side of a moving van. The entire top half simply ceased to exist while the rest seemed to turn to jelly and fell into a puddle.
Before the destruction could escalate further, the knight figure raised its sword high into the air. The sword glowed a deep violet before splitting down the middle. The resultant halves flowed down around its arms before a flash sent the blades extending from the tops of its wrists. Abruptly the pressure, which had seemingly kept Takashi rooted in place, began to rapidly diminish. Freed from such force, Takashi actually stumbled backwards and fell on the ground. But his eyes never left the figure wreathed in dark light.
There was a flash-
-and then Takashi found himself waking up. His parents were oddly nervous, often stealing glanecs out the windows. Their unusual behavior prompted Takashi to try and see what helf their attention, but was repeatedly rebuffed. It wasn't until near after lunch that he managed to steal a moment away from guarding eyes and managed a brief second out on the balcony. The street was a mess and police officers and other emergency responders had flooded the area. Seeing the devastation in the light made
It was a scene that for years afterwards would be distorted in his memory by a lie told repeatedly, that it was all the result of a domestic terrorist. In time, he would accept the lie and forget that he ever witnessed those true events. But even so distorted by fabrication and time, the image of that knight was burned into his subconconscious.
