The room was dark and chilly, filled with stale morning air. The summer heat had been taking its toll, and the air conditioning was cranked up at all times.
“Meryl...Meryl...Meryl, it’s time to wake up!”
She had woken suddenly, hearing the voice of her father, and now lay starring, bewildered and somewhat disoriented, into the gloom of the bedroom. Luminous green LCD lights shone at her from the bedside table, telling her it was only just seven o’clock -- too early to be awakened, let alone moving around ever since she got down unpacking.
She rose slowly into a sitting position, groaning, pushing the covers off and taking in her new room around her, the chest of drawers opposite, and the sliding doors which opened up the built-in wardrobe. Clothes that were not put away were folded neatly on the armchair as she had left them the previous night.
“Meryl, c’mon, you a grown woman now! Let’s show our new customers that. Let’s go!”
“Mrrf...I’m up, I’m up.” Meryl said with a yawn. Slowly, the Trinidadian pulled herself out of the comfortable bed with her sheets in tow as a form of protection from the chill. She’d have to turn it down while she was up. Once that was done, she pulled off her hair cap, rested her sheets lazily on the bed and headed straight to the bathroom. It was clear that she was definitely not a morning person.
After she was showered, Meryl spent an extra fifteen minutes doing her hair. Once that was done, she dressed in clothing that was appropriate for work: a black long-sleeve, and black slacks. She put her light yellow beanie on her head and headed downstairs.
Breakfast was a usual affair, but one in an unfamiliar place in an unfamiliar environment. Unlike her kitchen back at home, which was big enough to fit everything they need, their kitchen now was small, connected to a small dining room for them to eat. And yet, her father, Adéwalé, was moving around like he had been living here their whole lives.
The dark haired woman sat at the island counter in the middle of the kitchen on a stool, bowl in front of her with a box of cereal and milk out. Staring at the box blankly, she felt like she was ready to go back to sleep once again until she felt a hand on her shoulder.
“So, had a late night, huh?" Adéwalé asked, taking a seat down at the table.
“I guess you could say something like that.” Meryl shrugged, pouring the cereal into her bowl. “Still trying to get used to the different time zones here. Like, an hour or two difference, I can deal with. But a whole 11 hours? It’s gonna take some time to get used to.” She scanned around the room. “Mi guess Mom’s not joining us again?”
“No, she left out two hours ago to meet with some consultants about the store.” Adéwalé replied. “You know your mother, always finding the time to make herself busy.”
Meryl furrowed her brows, munching on her cereal. Clearly her mom was so busy that she didn’t have the time to say good morning and goodbye to her. She didn’t even leave a text message on her phone. She’s always been like that unfortunately. When it came to her parents, she wouldn’t mind being woken up just for that. But it was whatever, she’ll remind her workaholic mother not to forget common greetings.
Two hours later, both Meryl and Adéwalé had just opened up their store Mark of Style, which was so conveniently, right next to their house. Meryl was busy folding up clothes and setting them up for display. So far, no one came in. She couldn’t help but lean on the counter and yawn loudly.
“Guess mi ain’t gonna go out sightseeing today. Such a drag. What's the point of moving to Japan if we're all work and no fun?”

"What do you think?" As she lapped on a popsicle, Jazz quirked an eyebrow and glanced at her tamer. She was, for once, wearing her holosuit. Her pigtails moved around as she stretched her yellow blouse a little to let the air circulate. It was particularly hot today.
"I can't find its exact location, but it's certainly around here. The tracker says so." The Spaniard let out a sigh, her eyes studying the houses and stores in the area.
"Whatever we're doing, can we nonoroku do it already!?" Arianna protested, stomping a foot into the hot pavement. "It's too hot out here!" The Kazemon noted. Once again, she was wearing her 'holosuit', which basically consisted of a Kazemon without her visor and human clothes (in this case, jeans and a white tank top). The hot weather had brought Arinna to tie up her long, purple hair.
"Let's go." Katherine nodded and led the way.
After short and uneventful scouting of the area, the three girls entered the last store in the street. "Mark of Style" seemed to be an apparel shop, something Katherine was definitely not expecting to find in Cat Street. Just after entering, the Spaniard explored her surroundings, trying to basically grasp how the place looked, overall. She slowly walked towards the counter taking a look around, although she got distracted by some of the items being offered.
After exploring for a while, however, Arianna went straight to her destination and waved at the girl casually yawning at the counter. "Hello!~" She greeted her enthusiastically, while Jazz joined her tamer at browsing through the clothes. "I hadn't seen this shop around here before." She noted, taking her arms behind her back and looking around as she did. "Is it new?" The purple-haired girl punctuated that with a tilt of her head, right before smiling innocently.
"I don't even know what I'd come looking for in here... you seem to offer plenty of things!" She added. "Not all of them look like clothes I've seen around before. These are nonoroku innovative." A nod accompanied these words, as she looked at the pile of folded clothes next to Meryl. As someone who did not know how different cultures and ways of dressing worked in this world, Arianna could only wonder what was the reason behind this. Then, she offered a little spin and turned around for the girl to see her. "What do you think could look good on me?"
With little discretion, and even while she spoke to this clerk, the purple-haired girl kept letting her eyes trail around her surroundings as if she was looking for something.

Hearing the door chime go off made Meryl almost slip in surprise. Thankfully she caught herself just in time before she hit her face on the counter. She was not expecting customers to come here shopping this early. Heck, it wasn’t even 10:30 yet according to her watch. Then again, it was just as busy back at home in the early mornings, so this really doesn’t surprise her all that much.
Entering the shop were three girls: one had dark lavender, curly hair, green eyes, and with a somewhat dark complexion; the second girl had long brown hair in pigtails with a slight ahoge, orange-brown eyes, and was wearing a yellow blouse; and the third one somewhat grabbed Meryl’s attention—she had long purple hair, fair skin, and noticeably, four green stripes on each side of her face. None of them looked as though they were natives here, especially the first girl.
Regardless, Meryl waved to the one approaching her and gave a warm smile. “Hello there, welcome to Mark of Style! How are you?” The girl that looked like she came straight from a cosplay convention asked if this shop was new, in which the Trinidadian nodded.
“Ay, we just opened up shop here a few days ago. We’re an clothing store that hails from Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean that recently saw a bit of an expansion. As you can see, we’re still putting a few things up for display, so I apologize about that.”
She walked away from the counter and stood as the girl browsed around. “I’m sorry, nonoroku?” She repeated with her brow raised. “Is that something Japanese for impressing? I'm not very well acquainted with the language ”
Glossing over the question, she took a step back to get a good look at the girl, using both of her index fingers and thumbs to put her in a frame before answering. “Hmm…well, since you’re sportin’ purple hair and that’s it’s a scorcher out there, mi thinks ya would look good with somethin’ light in color that won’t make you burn up in the sun. One second…”
She would then go to the aisle down, and quickly pick out two outfits: the first being an one shoulder blouse raspberry in color and Meshiki white silk pants; and the second being a rose colored Babetown Baby Tee knit-ly made with rose-colored pants to boot.
She walked back to the girl. “Here you go. If you go straight down and make a left, you’ll find the dressing room. Please, let me know if ya need any help."
She then turned her attention to the two other girls. “Do any of y’all need help with somethin’ as well, or are ya still browsing?”

As soon as she was greeted by the clerk, Arianna reciprocated her salutation with a smile. “I’m doing great! It’s too hot outside though… How are you?” She asked back. “T-Trinidad and Toba…go…” The Kazemon in disguise muttered while taking a hand to her chin. “I have no idea where that is!” She admitted with an apologetic expression. “I think the store is looking great, though!”
Although significantly distracted by the huge variety Mask of Style had to offer in terms of clothes and garnets, Katherine managed to finally make way to the counter, arriving right when Meryl inquired about Arianna’s favorite word.
“It isn’t.” The Spaniard noted by giggling. “Nonoroku is just a word she likes to use. Sometimes she uses it to reinforce a concept, sometimes she uses it as a verb… it doesn’t really mean anything.” The green-eyed delivered the explanation as well as she could, a little embarrassed by her friend’s quirky attitude.
Arianna immediately puffed her cheeks. “I am sorry, Mrs. Katherine BUT Nonoroku totally means something!” She insisted while taking her hands to her hips.
“Really? What does it mean, then?”
“NONOROKU IS LIKE A woosh! AN ANCIENT TERM THAT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR nonoroku EVER! It’s the EPITOME of nonorokuness and t—“
Leaving her friend to speak in the background (as she wasn’t really managing to explain anything), Katherine turned her attention back to the clerk. “Hi. I’m Katherine Jasso.” She tilted her head with a smile before bowing a little forward respectfully. “That one over there is my friend Jasmine and this is Arianna. Hopefully, you can find the right outfit for her.” Knowing the ethnicity of her interlocutor, Katherine took the freedom to omit to make up last names for Jazz and Arianna, something she usually had to do when introducing them to Japanese people.
“Oh, right! The clothes!” Having finished her little speech about a word that clearly had no meaning, Arianna was brought back to the conversation when hearing Katherine talk about clothes. It was then when she would allow Meryl to pick a couple of outfits for her and even frame her in to study what would fit her style. “I love these!” Arianna exclaimed excitedly, grabbing both outfits and bouncing at the same spot “C-Could it be that….!?” She muttered, leaning forward to get her face closer to Meryl, with little regard for personal space. “... With these... I’ll finally be able to nonoroku bury Mrs. Katherine and show everyone I, the Wind Warrior, AM the superior beauty in our group!?”
“Enough! Why don’t you go get changed?” Katherine immediately scooted in front of Arianna, grabbing her by the shoulders and forcefully making her turn away towards the dressers. “P-Please don’t mind her! She’s just… weird, sometimes.” The raven-haired girl admitted while sweat-dropping.
When facing Meryl’s question, Katherine blinked. “I mean… I hadn’t really thought about getting anything for me…” She admitted timidly, a soft blush becoming evident around her cheeks holding a dubitative expression. Jazz kept browsing through the aisles. Katherine then cleared her throat and raised her head. “Actually, sorry if this sounds weird but… I wanted to ask you… " She looked around for a second, right before bringing her green eyes back to the girl “Have you seen… anything strange happen around here today? Anything just… out of the ordinary. Have you heard or felt anything out of place?”
Katherine's expression showed she understood how vague that question was.

“Ah, Trinidad and Tobago is a small island country in the Caribbean.” Meryl specified to the girl, somewhat expecting a response like that. “If you think it’s hot outside now, then you probably won't last a whole week there, especially in the dry season.” She joked.
Meryl was delighted that the girl was finding everything in the store alright. For being furnished, painted, and put together in such a short time, if there’s one thing she could give her dad credit for, it was how quick, resourceful, and well-planned ahead he was. Usually a store like this would take a few months to get to a presentable state before opening, but with how much enthusiasm the fashion business of Shibuya expressed with her parent’s little business, they were able to get it set up in less than two and a half mother, or from what she heard from her mom whenever she was home.
Still a bit confused about the word the purple-headed girl used, one of her other friends explained that nonoroku wasn't a Japanese phrase at all, but a word that she made up to reinforce a concept. “Ahhh, that makes sense, I think…” the Trinidadian trailed off, still confused. Her gold eyes widened in surprise to the other girl’s rant, not knowing how to react, but it slowly faded into the background.
The raven-haired girl introduced herself as Katherine Jasso, as well as her other two friends. Meryl smiled and nodded her head. “Merly Endesha. It’s good to finally meet some girls that are more out-there, y’know. Most of the females are too, what’s the word… rigid. And don’t worry, your friend will be in good care, for I’ve got a good eye with finding a person’s style,” she’d give a reassuring wink.
Picking out two pairs of clothes for Arianna, Meryl couldn’t help but chuckle in response to her excitement, but not before putting both hands as a way to make sure she doesn’t get too close to her. “S-sure, nonoroku away.” Yeah, she was definitely on the quirky side.
Meryl’s demanor quickly changed as she heard that Katherine hadn’t really thought about getting anything. “What?! A pretty woman like yourself doesn’t just walk in here without knowing what to get.” Dropping her professional demeanor, she quickly browses through the hanged clothes while eyeing at her, trying to picture the right outfit for her. “But don’t worry, Endesha’s got ya back~”
On the question if she saw anything suspicious today, Meryl shrugged. “No, nothing. I’ve been here since nine o’clock." She paused, turning to Katherine. “Why? Did something happen?”

Given how Katherine didn’t see herself as an ‘out there’ girl at all, and actually thought of herself as a rigid person most of the time, she couldn’t stop a smile from being drawn on her face when Meryl mentioned this. She had heard from other people recent events had changed her for good, but seeing this sort of reaffirmed by someone she didn’t know at all was… nice, honestly. Granted, for the most part, it was likely she meant Arianna, the most outgoing being Katherine had ever met but… she did use the plural, right?
“I bet you do!” It was kind of her job, after all? Besides, she did look very pretty in such a simple outfit!
“YES!” Oh no. Someone used Nonoroku in front of the Wind Warrior. Of course, she would feel like she had a new fan. The Fairymon raised a fist in the air and walked proudly to the dresser. She was totally winning at life right now.
Katherine’s previous amazement about being called ‘out-there' would look like nothing in front of her face turning red when being called pretty. She nervously took her hand to the back of her head, playing with her curls and looking away for a second. “W-What? N-No… that’s…” Well, even if she had changed for the better, she still had trouble taking compliments from a stranger. Some things would just never change, probably.
Although she had managed to reincorporate just well enough to throw the vaguest question ever at Meryl, she couldn’t get any informative response from her. Well, that was to be expected, with how little details she had provided when formulating that. “N-No… it’s nothing. It’s just…” Could she really explain any further into this without saying too much? Unlikely. Right when the Spaniard was about to give up, though...
“It’s not a big deal. We’re members of Shibuya High School’s Paranormal Club.” Suddenly, Jazz (who Katherine had introduced as Jasmine earlier) got closer to the pair. “We’re investigating a string of odd happenings that have taken place here in Cat Street recently.” The brunette explained confidently, Katherine’s eyes widening for a second before she nodded quickly. Yes! Of course. That was it. “It would be great if you could tell us if you have seen or heard anything strange recently. Maybe at nights?” Jazz used her puppy eyes, her long pigtails flailing behind her as she leaned forward with her hands behind her back. "Are you familiar with paranormal events at all? Do you have any interest in them?"
For a quick second, while Meryl browsed through the clothes, the holosuited Lopmon glanced at her tamer, who looked a bit perplexed by her being so insistent. That single look was enough for Katherine to get what she wanted to express.
This was the place.
It was then when Arianna went out of the dresser and approached the group again, wearing long, white pants and a beautiful, frilly pink top. “So, Mrs. Endesha, I was thinking… Since you’re my new apprentice maybe you could take me to this Trinidad and Tobago island you mentioned. I feel like going somewhere tropical for a change.” The purple-haired girl leisurely noted while fixing up her clothes a little.
“Two islands.” Katherine noted making a gesture with her fingers.
“Huh?”
“They are two separate islands. Trinidad and Tobago. It is a single country, but two separate islands. They're also very, very far away from here, in the Caribbean sea.”
“Tsk. Of course I nonoroku knew that.” Arianna grumbled while clenching her teeth. ‘Jasmine’ took the chance to quickly make another gesture to Arianna, trying to convey the same information she had passed to Katherine. The self-proclaimed ruler’s eyes widened, as she suddenly got filled with a fresh burst of energy. “So! Mrs. Endesha. Did you find anything for Mrs. Katherine to wear in her weak attempt to surpass me? Because there’s no nonoroku way she’ll look better than how I look now!” The holosuited fairy boasted as she gracefully took a little spin to show her new outfit.
“Y-You do look… quite pretty.” The Spaniard admitted without any remorse.
Arianna gasped, blushing. She immediately turned her back at Katherine. “S-Silly! Don’t think your rival will fall that easily for your compliments!”
Katherine slowly tilted her head.
One could only wonder if Meryl was asking herself how this paranormal club managed to get anything done at all.

Watching Katherine become a blushing mess with her comment, Meryl couldn’t help but smile in amusement. Where she was from, a girl that was not enamored by her own appearance despite people saying otherwise screamed for reassurance. But with Katherine, it was easy to see that she was a bit on the shy side and not used to a lot of compliments. But still, a pretty girl like her should not dismiss herself so easily.
Looking through the racks to find an outfit that the woman would take interest in, her other friend, Jazz, explained that they’re a part of a paranormal club at the Shibuya School Grounds, and that they were investigating a string of happenings that’s been happening on Cat Street recently. This peeped the Trinidadian’s curiosity.
“Hmmm, I am familiar with it, but I can’t say that I have an interest in that stuff,” Meryl replied. “I’ve always thought that chasing after spooky stuff was a boy’s thing, just an excuse for them to pick up a video camera and goof around.” She crossed her arms, pondering in thought. “But now that you’ve mentioned it...I think about three nights ago when we were closing shop, there was a guy just wandering dazedly around the alley, knocking on the doors of stores that were already closed. When they came up to here, my dad, who owns this place, told him we were closed up for the night. The guy...just stood there for a couple of seconds, acting like he didn’t understand what my dad said . And then he just left, just like that.”
Meryl’s demeanor quickly changed as she recalled another important detail from that night. “But I guess there was one thing that I noticed about them,” Meryl continued. “When he turned towards me, his eyes were red. It wasn’t bloodshot red; it was as if they were born with that eye color. We just deduced that he was just a junkie that was high, but something tells me that wasn’t the case.”
Just then, Arianna had come out of the dressing room, now weaning the outfit that she had picked out. Meryl’s eyes widened in surprise. She picked out an excellent outfit for her; she really pull that off “Never doubt the Endesha intuition~” she happily mused.
When asked if she’d found an outfit for Katherine, Meryl quickly scrambled back into the racks to try an outfit for the raven-haired woman. She could only find one outfit she felt that screamed “Katherine” from glancing at her: a white knit ribbed tank top, blue bleached jeans, and a black oriented belt with a silver buckle to go along with.
“I know this probably doesn’t look all flashy compared to your friend, but something tells me you’re the kind of person that appreciates a bit of subtlety every now and then." Meryl said to Katherine. “If you don’t like it, I’ll be happy to put it back.”

It seemed that the interrogation getting carried by the clearly-not-made-up paranormal club had been a success. Eventually, Meryl had remembered something odd happening in this Cat Street, which would be too much of a coincidence considering the signal that had triggered in Katherine’s digivice and what Jazz had felt. Right now, they needed any type of clue they could get, so looking deep into this was their only choice.
By the time Meryl offered an answer, Arianna was back from the dresser already, so she could somehow collaborate (to use a euphemism on what she did) regarding the info the girl gave. “Right, right.” Katherine folded her arms and nodded as Meryl expressed her lack of interest in the topic. “I agree.” Arianna nodded, replicating Katherine’s movements, folding her arms and nodding too. Immediately, the raven-haired girl jumped to correct her ‘colleague’ quickly. “Y-You mean you’d agree most people think that way. Right?” Maybe the Spaniard was a little too nervous now but… if they were a paranormal club they were supposed to be interested in paranormal stuff, right!?
Arianna blinked twice as she slowly picked up on this. “Oh! Yes. Exactly. Some people see it that way. But I personally nonoroku love all of those ghost things!”
Katherine paid close attention to Meryl's words, quietly nodding and processing all of this data. Despite all of this information coming into play now, she really did appreciate the Trinitarian girl's interest in picking up clothes for her. A fashion lover as she was, she was very interested in seeing what the clerk, someone who knew a lot about this topic, could pick for her.
In all honesty, Katherine was fairly surprised about how Meryl had managed to develop an idea of what she would like to wear. It wasn’t completely accurate, but it was an outstandingly good approximation. While Katherine didn’t like outfits that were directly flashy at first, she did like clothes that could take someone’s breath away, even if she wouldn’t directly admit it.
“Let’s see what the Endesha intuition can do for me then ~” The Spaniard giggled playfully. Trusting Jazz could handle the continuation of this, and fairly fascinated by the combination of colors Meryl had picked, Katherine took the outfit and walked towards the dresser.
While Katherine got changed, Jazz/Jasmine walked closer to Meryl, slowly leaning on the counter with a relaxed demeanor. “So… Meryl, this weird guy with red eyes… has not appeared again since that night?” She asked while tilting her head. “Can you remember something about that night that was different from the ones when he has not shown up? The weather, the lighting on the street, or maybe… something you did? A big part of chasing paranormal events is actually trying to recreate scenarios to see if strange happenings occur only under certain conditions.” The holosuited Lopmon tried to sound as professional as possible, all while sometimes glancing to the side to see Arianna looking at herself reflected on the full-body-sized mirror. Jazz could only assume she was trying to strike to cutest pose she could, even if her definition of cute was probably not fully accurate.

The Trinidadian shrugged her shoulders at Katherine's question. “Ehh, not necessarily, but back where I was from, most of the boys in my neighborhood were into that stuff a lot when I was younger,” she said. “At first I thought it was a thrilling endeavor, breaking into old historic locations, venues, cemeteries, or abandoned houses just to catch a glimpse of ‘ghosts’, but those same boys kept getting caught by the police so that died any interest I had of the paranormal real quick.” Meryl uncrossed her arms, giving a gentle smile.“But don’t let my opinions dissuade ya. I believe there’s some unseen force out in our world, and you lot seem like you’re more capable than kids with potatoes for camera.”
Yet still, if the supernatural existed, then what Meryl saw a few nights ago definitely was it. She’s seen a few junkies back at home, but nothing like she saw before. He almost seemed possessed somehow, like he was being controlled by some outside force. Nobody can possess glowing red eyes…can they?
Picking out Katherine’s clothes, the Trinidadian winked playfully to her, with no doubt in her mind that the clothes she picked out would look stellar on her. She’s always had an eye for fashion, so much so that she could see a person’s style by just looking at them, something that her dad nicknamed “the Endesha Intuition.”
As soon as the Spaniard left to the dressing room, Jazz— her other friend — asked if there were other supernatural occurrences happening the night the man with red eyes showed up. Meryl closed her eyes, pondering in thought. “Hmmm…I’m not really sure,” she replied. “Everything seemed normal that night. No light flickering or all that jazz you’d expect to encounter in a supernatural event. He just had red glowing eyes, something I don’t think is fathomable, unless you're injecting gallons of ketamine into you or something, heh.”
