The cold, freezing, frostbite wind that nips at your nose and fingertips carrying little snowflakes, otherwise known as winter, has finally arrived in Tokyo. Cold air blowing from the nearby Mt. Fuji brought in snow that fell gently from the sky. It had already covered the ground and the rooftops of houses and buildings like a blanket of ash. To children, it was like magic falling from the sky. But to Vergil Hoskins, it was a reminder to put a hat over his head to keep his head and ears warm.
Today was just like any ordinary afternoon here at the Shibuya Campus Grounds — students were either heading out home after the last of the classes let out for the weekend, while others lingered around in the lounge area from the window, typing on their personal computers meticulously as they warmed up next to a fireplace. As for Vergil, he was heading off to the art wing of the campus, carrying two large sketchbooks— one in his hand, the other rolled up and sticking out of his bookbag.
He had an art assignment that was due next Thursday, one focusing on the concept of vanishing points. His art professor gave everyone in the class the freedom to pick whatever background they wanted to draw rather than assign one to each individual student. For Vergil, the area he chose was the front of the classroom door. A basic setting, really, but one that was a bit tricky for him since he had never once drawn an environment in a three-dimensional space. But regardless, it was a challenge he was willing to take.
Entering the doors of the art wing, Vergil navigated to his classroom. Once there, there were only a handful of students there focusing on their own respective projects. Setting his belongings down, he grabbed one of the nearby metal easel tripod stands, placed his art pad onto it, and got to work.
University wasn’t his only obligation, though. The other being his job at the Digimon security group known as AEGIS, led by Sophie James. For a few months now, he’s just been working at the office floor, not going on any on-field assignments. Why? Because his two Digimon, Vee and Gummy, had decided to split off from him.
Not split off as in “Oh no, they’re not partners anymore.” Not that forced emotional shit you see at the end of every anime. Split off meaning that they decided to go their separate ways for a while. What kicked it off was Gummy, who wanted to stay at the Digital World with his boyfriend Bezil at the City of Y’s. From what the Gumdramon told him, there had been an outbreak of sickness going on there, a sickness known as the Shining Sea Fever, and Bezil had caught it. Gummy opted to stay with him until he got better, which he, of course did. But then one day, he had asked if he could stay with Bezil at Y’s for the time being. Seeing as how sincere and honest he was about his feelings, Vergil did not object, only telling him to be careful since without him, he won’t be able to evolve.
And for Vee, one day after completing an assignment for AEGIS, the Veemon had told him that he was going to go train with Owen the Gaomon for a while to get stronger. The young man knew that his Digimon had been going through a rough time; he had never fully healed mentally from what happened at Golden Rocks a few months back. He had been withdrawn, less enthusiastic, and otherwise quiet, far from his usual self. Colin’s Digimon, Luke had helped Vee through his dark time, and Vergil did his best to comfort him. So it was no suprise to Vergil that he had told him that he was going to train with Vergil’s now surrogate dad. The little guy needed it, and he hoped that Owen was training him well.
He hoped they were both doing well. Deep down, he missed them. His life wasn’t the same without those two.
As the afternoon progressed into the early evening hours, everybody but him had left the art wing, as he was still working on his assignment. He had progressed a lot, but something was not quite right; the sketch of the classroom looked too funky in his eyes. He had erased it a couple of times, but now it just looked like a mess. He gave a defeated sigh.
“God, am I gonna have to start over again?” Vergil muttered to himself. He scanned over what he got so far. “No…no, if I just erase this part here and there and correct it, I can start on the ceiling tiles.”
A knock was then heard from the door. Vergil looked up to see his art professor, Mr. Aizawa, standing at the open hallway door.
“Mr. Hoskins, you’re the last of my students I’d expect to be working this late,” he jested.
“Ehh, you can say I got really absorbed in today’s lecture.” Vergil remarked, smirking.
The man chuckled. He knew that Vergil was a somewhat laid-back student, despite being a Junior, so to see him working this late after school surprised him. “Well I’m going to be heading out, so if you have any questions about our upcoming assignment, feel free to shoot me an email.”
“You got it, Mr. Aizawa.” Vergil replied.
As Aizawa left, Vergil checked his phone to see what time it was. To his surprise it was close to being 19:00 hours (7:00 pm).
“Oh shit, better start getting back to the crib and make some dinner.” Vergil said. He got up from his stool, realizing that he had made a mess of his workspace, with charcoal powder and pencil shaving on the floor. Now he could clean it up…but that was more of a job for the custodians. He started to pack up all of his belongings, planning to come back tomorrow to continue working on his assignment.
‘S p e c s…’
A cold sensation rushed down Vergil’s spine as he jolted his head upwards in a quick panic. “What the—” he looked out into the hallway. “Gummy?” Nobody was there. He grabbed his head, slightly shaking it. "Guess I'm more tired than I thought..."
As continued to pack his things, albeit still wary, his body slowly became cold. The temperature of the room had suddenly dropped, as evident by his now visible breath.
‘Did the building's just heat just turn off?’ he thought to himself. That couldn’t be it, the heating usually stays on even after the school closes, so it must be a nearby open window.
Before he could even try to find what window it was, the lights of the classroom and the hallway began to flicker on and off, as if something supernatural was happening, or…
Vergil quickly dug into his bag and pulled out his D-Watch, and on queue, it suddenly activated, notifying him of what he had suspected: a Digimon coming into the human world.
“Oh, just great.”

Vergil grabbed his hooded jacket lying on a nearby stool and pulled out his phone. He frantically scrolled down to his contact list to call any AEGIS agents that were on station at the moment. Since he was the only active agent without any Digimon, he wasn’t able to properly handle whatever situation that was about to unfold. It was his job to report it.
His first attempt was to call Colin James, who was partnered with Bellamy the Impmon and Luke the Elecmon. The phone rang for a couple of moments before hearing an automated message.
“The number you are trying to reach is not currently reachable. Please try again later.” The automated voice said, before abruptly ending the call.
“What the hell?” Vergil surfed through his contact lists again and clicked on Johan Walker’s name, who was partnered with Dokamon. The phone rang for a few moments before lowering it down from his ear.
“Oh that’s right, he’s out on an assignment right now with Tadayoshi. Fuck!” Vergil seethed. He began to pace around the phone back and forth frantically, trying to call each member of AEGIS to no avail, all repeating the same message. Not even Sophie was reachable.
He began to pull on his hair in frustration. This situation just shifted from bad to worse. He couldn’t reach anyone, whatever Digimon anomaly that his D-Watch detected was approaching the art wing, and he feared that there were some faculty and custodians still inside the building.
Vergil sighed. “Great…just great.” He pocketed his phone and pulled out his D-Watch, shifting through the settings. “Now is as good a time as any to try this feature." With a push of a button, he sent out a distress beacon of his location to any digivices near the vicinity of the school grounds, so anyone with a D-Terminal would pick up the call for help—both AEGIS and any nearby Tamers. This feature was primarily reserved for AEGIS members only as they were not allowed to put it out on an open channel, but since this was a potential emergency, he figured now was as good of a time as any to try this.
Once that was done, he wrapped his D-Watch around his wrist and quickly sprinted to the front of the class to shut off the lights. He sat down on the floor; bringing one leg up bent, he laid an arm over his knees and leaned his chin against it. He sighed. “Guess now all I can do now is wait…”
For the first few minutes, there was silence, but that would all change when a loud bang was heard from downstairs, making the young man shutter in fear. He broke into a cold sweat, but did his best to remain calm. He could sense that something was coming — something that was not friendly in any shape or form. If Gummy was here, he would tell him to man up and stop acting like a coward and take action.
And if he was here, he’d be right.
With a determined glare on his face, Vergil surfed through the settings of his D-Watch and shut off the distress beacon, aimed to solve this problem on his own. Summoning his Infini-Store He equipped himself with his grapple gun and summoned a hard light baton. He had been so used to hiding behind Vee and Gummy that he’d almost forgotten what it was like to defend himself from any enemy Digimon. He figured that as long as he was with them, no harm would come his way. They weren’t here, so it was up to him now.
“I know you here somewhere, you little runt,” a loud, booming voice said.
Exiting his homeroom, Vergil began to quietly move throughout the dimly lit hallways, the tremor coming harder. It sounded like someone was smashing something, and it was coming from the adjacent hall.
And then he heard low growling noises. Vergil felt himself begin to shiver. Was…this a beast Digimon he was dealing with here? And if so, why was it here? He approached a line of lockers, slowly dragging himself to the end to take a peak. What he saw made his eyes widen in disbelief to what he was seeing.
It was a Digimon, alright, but this one was one he’d never seen before. It had the appearance of a green goblin creature that was slightly larger than him with yellow eyes, short red mohawk hair, pointy ears, and two large fangs protruding from his mouth as an underbite. It walked slowly, prying open a locker with its bare hands, peeking inside of it.
“You can’t hide from me forever. I'll tear down this whole building to find ya if I have to,” it exclaimed.
Vergil’s D-Watch activated, a holographic screen forming slightly in front of him in a dim light. The Digimon in question was identified as Goblimon, a Child level oni Digimon. Usually accompanied by other members of the same species, it never acts alone; instead, it attacks in groups to win fights. But this one was himself though. Judging by his size, maybe he didn’t need allies?
Vergil began to ponder on what to do next, now that the Digimon has been properly identified. He still didn’t know that he was here, so he had the element of surprise, but how do you apprehend a target that big?
The Goblimon seemed to be walking away from Vergil, most likely continuing his search elsewhere in the building.
'Get out of the way..!' a voice whispered to him in his head.
“WHOEVER’S WATCHING ME MUST REALLY WANNA DIE!!” Vergil froze up upon hearing the booming voice. Quickly reacting, Vergil fired his grapple gun at the wall in front of him, propelling himself forward, yelping. As he did so, the Goblimon used his club to smash the set of lockers he hid behind, pulverizing them. Picking himself up, the young glared at the oni digimon and pointed his grapple gun at him, coming to a stand-off.
“A human…” Goblimon gruffed, “So you were the rat who’s been watching me…”
“Identify yourself, motherfucker!” Vergil swore. “You are in AEGIS jurisdiction! You better state your business here, now!”
Goblimon titled his head, surprised that a human possessed the gall to talk to him like that, but nevertheless, he answered. “Since you’re so interested, I’m looking for a lil’ Bibimon—purple and green thing. He’s said to be the son of a prince where I’m from, so holding him for ransom will give me a hefty load of bits. You haven’t happened to see him around, eh?”
Vergil smacked his teeth, finding this ludicrous. “Even if I did know where they were, I sure as hell wouldn't tell you,” he said firmly. “So here’s what’s going to happen: you’re gonna stop smashing up all of these damn lockers, you’re going to crawl back to whatever Digi-gate you came from, and you’re going to cease this fruitless bounty hunt of yours, or else…”
In response, the ori Digimon howled in laughter. “Or what?”
Vergil smirked, and pulled the trigger of his grapple gun, firing a grappling hook aimed at his shoulder. Goblimon reeled in pain. Vergil activated his hard light baton from his D-Watch, and with a push of a secondary trigger, the grapple line began to reel back, pulling him towards the vulnerable Digimon, allowing him to deliver a drop kick square to Goblimon’s face.
“Or this 'rat' will put his foot up your ass!"

Vergil smirked triumphantly as he managed to land a blow on Goblimon. If there was one thing about the big, dumb and stupid, is that they usually tend to get overconfidence, and overconfidence is always a big weakness.
“You..!” Goblimon gasped as he picked himself back up, seething in anger as the human before him readied his light baton and grappling gun, the former designed to leave a Child-level digimon thinking twice before messing with a prepared human. His muscles bunched beneath him and he jumped, raising his club dorned with screws above his head to strike. “Human must really have a death wish! Goburi Rush!”
Vergil gasped and quickly rolled out of the way. The downwards strike causing the tile floor beneath him to crack and crumble. Vergil took immediate notice of that. One strike from Goblimon, and he was done for, so he had to remain on his guard. Vergil didn’t even respond with a quip before he launched his flurry of assaults.
As expected, however, Goblimon fought back just as fiercely. And while the digimon was noticeably bigger, his swings were easy to telegraph, allowing Vergil to weave out of the way of the most devastating swings.
Goblimon then performed a horizontal swing with his club. Vergil, not being able to get out of the way, used his hard light baton to try and block the attack as the two entered a stalemate. Vergil gritted his teeth and grunted, putting his other hand on the baton for added support as he used all of his strength to overcome the struggle as his legs buckled. Goblimon, unfortunately, took notice of this, and swifty tripped Vergil with his foot, causing the human to fall on the ground.
“Ahhh!” Vergil yelled. His grapple gun skid across the floor a few feet away. Vergil tried to crawl towards it to retrieve it, but Goblimon was able to grab his arms and easily pull him upwards, until his face was inches away from his. “Let me go, you sonova bitch!” He squirmed, trying his best to escape from the ori’s grip, but as he did, the digimon tightened his grip further, causing Vergil to scream in pain.
The Goblimon then roared at his face, before throwing the human across the hallway. Vergil tumbled a couple of feet before coming to a complete stop, groaning in pain. Goblimon sneered. “Human’s not so tough I think,” he said, dragging his club against the floor as he approached. “You’ll break open easy, like melon.” He slowly raised his club, preparing to deliver the finishing blow. “Soft inside!”
Vergil tried his best to crawl away, trying his best to gain as much distance as he could, but it was no use. Was this it? Was this the end? His eyes widened in fear, regretful of his decision of not calling for backup when he had the chance.
Before the strike could be delivered, Vergil’s D-Watch began to shine a brilliant blinding glow. The Goblimon yelled as he became dazed. He then felt a sudden electric shock to the chest that caused him to reel back.
“Who dares?!” Goblimon yelled, before opening his eyes in surprise to the figure before him.
Vergil slowly opened his eyes, lowering his good hand down. A small figure interpose themselves between him and the foe before him. It was encased in shadows, but Vergil could tell the creature was four-legged. Green electric sparks began to crackle around it, residue from its previous strike. It began to step towards the early moonlight to reveal itself: a small purple round Digimon with four legs, beady eyes, a green pattern in the shape of a “v” on its forehead, along with a fringe that swayed slightly.
“It’s one thing to pick on those that can’t defend themselves…” the Digimon spoke, assuming a protective stance in front of Vergil. His eyes narrowed dangerously “But don’t you think, for one second, that you can hurt my uncle, zappu!”

Vergil, as well as Goblimon, were flabbergasted at the Bibimon’s sudden appearance. He was honestly at a loss for words, only mouthing the words ‘what?’ before the small purple digimon glanced at him.
“Run!” The Bibimon ordered. The young man gave a confused nod as he picked himself up and began running down the hall, holding his injured arm. He huffed and panted, the cold not enough to stop him from prespirating. He found himself asking these three questions: who was that Digimon, how did it get into his D-Watch, and most importantly, why did it call him “uncle”?
Seeing that the human was escaping, the Bibimon gave a sigh of relief before turning to face his foe.
“So human was hiding you this entire time?” Goblimon asked. “Heh, should have said so. Would have spared me the time and not have to nearly crush his little arm like that.”
“He did not know that I was hiding in his digivice, Goblimon!” Bibimon corrected, taking a step forward, prepared to protect the human. “Now leave him alone! I’m gonna show you who your real opponent is, zappu!”
Goblimon laughed low in his belly. “You? A real opponent? Don’t make me laugh!” He held out his palm, forming a fireball. His mocking smile quickly disappeared as he gritted his teeth in anger. “A little baby like you can never match me in strength! Goburi Bomb!” He aimed his attack at Vergil, still not satisfied with their fight.
Bibimon quickly intercepted, biting Goblimon on the wrist, throwing his aim off. The fireball instead hit a newspaper bin, narrowly missing Vergil, but setting the stacks of paper ablazed.
“Shit!” Vergil exclaimed, stopping in his tracks. If that fire were to keep burning like this , it would eventually spread throughout the building. Finding a nearby fire extinguisher, he grabbed it from its hinges, aimed the hose at the fire, and squeezed the lever, spreading the solution in a sweeping motion until no burning embers remained.
“Cielos… why am I so popular with every bad Digimon I meet,” Vergil said under his breath. “I wanna say it’s because I’m black, but…naa, they just want to straight up run fades with me.”
This moment of tranquility would come to an abrupt end as Vergil turned around in horror to see the purple Digimon getting backhanded by Goblimon in retaliation for stopping his attack. The situation was quickly going from bad to worse. He clenched his fist in anger, not at him, but himself. Even when dealing with a Child level Digimon, he still felt powerless to stop this one Digimon. Even after everything that happened in the Golden Rocks, nothing changed; he was still nothing but a vulnerable spectator.
“Fine!” the Goblimon yelled, igniting a fireball into his hand once more. “I’d be going against the master’s orders, but so what? You want to be a little savior, then you can die as one! Goburi Bomb!”
The Bibimon closed his eyes, preparing for the worst. Seeing that the little guy stood no chance, Vergil’s body began to move on his own and started to sprint towards the two. Then Goblimon threw his attack. The young man grabbed the little digimon and hugged him close to his chest, acting as a shield as the fireball hit him on the back, making the young man scream in pain as he fell to the floor
“Uncle Specs!” Bibimon yelped in horror. The back of the human’s shirt was smoldering, leaving a large burnt bruise on his upper back. The digimon’s face contorted; a mixture of regret and fear gripped him. “I’m so sorry! If I was more stronger, this wouldn’t have—”
“W-why do you keep calling me that?” Vergil interrupted, shocking Bibimon. The young man gave a weak, painful smile. He used his arm to raise his upper body up, though barely as the pain was becoming too much to bear—a pain he was all-to familiar with. “Besides…that was rather low of me…too leave you facing something scary alone, while trying to save my own skin isn’t it?”
“But you’re—”
“A human? I know…I know. But just because I’m a human won’t stop me from doing the right thing, especially when somebody's in danger. Vergil uttered. “Besides…my friend Miyu would kick my ass if I didn’t.”
The Bibimon was shocked, unable to object to the human’s word.
“At least you’ve decided to not run away anymore, right?” Goblimon’s voice boomed behind Vergil. He was right behind them, and any moment, he could strike them.
Vergil froze, trying to think of a way for the two of them to escape. He spotted a pair of scissors that was at arms length from him, and since his grapple gun was down on the other side of the hallway, this was the closest thing he had to a potential lethal weapon. He exhaled a frustrated sigh.
“I am so tired…”
Goblimon began to bring down his massing club, aiming to take out the both of them in one fell swoop. Vergil reacted quickly. Grabbing the pair of scissors, his leg muscles bunched beneath him and he rose, implying the ori digimon on the left side of his chest.
“G-GAAAAAHHHH!” Goblimon screamed in pain. Red data began to bleed from the wound Vergil in response plunged the scissors in deeping, trying to do as much damage as possible.
“Sorry, but it’s clear that you don’t intend to spare our lives.” Vergil said. He turned to Bibimon. “Now let’s g—”
BAM!
Goblimon punched Vergil strongly in the stomach, sending the man flying upwards before crashing into the ground, causing him to vomit copious amounts of spit.
“Uncle Specs!!” Bibimon screamed
Goblimon grabbed the scissors that were deep within him and yanked it out, tossing it away. “Stupid human, that fucking hurt!” he snarled. Clenching his fists once more, he began to repeatedly plummet the defenseless human, his eyes narrowing with pure rage. Vergil did his best to shield his head from any damage. “How’d ya like that, huh?!”
Unable to watch this horrifying beating any longer, Bibimon began to rise up, his legs barely able to hold his weight. “S-Stop it…”
The leak of data that was emitting from the Goblimon’s wound stopped leaking out of his body, a sign that the wound had healed itself. “Ahh, don't feel pain anymore.” Grabbing his club, the ori digimon raised it above his head, preparing to finally deliver the final blow to the human. “Just in time to smash your skull!” Then, Bibimon’s eyes flashed.
“I SAID STOP!”
The digimon’s body glowed as it was involved in a green spherical stream of data, bright enough to light up not just the hallway, but the entire art wing. Vergil and Goblimon shielded their eyes in response, the latter stopping his attack. Suddenly, a green lightning bolt shot through the sphere of data, zapping the Goblimon’s club. The ori digimon reeled in response, dropping his weapon as he held his hand in pain.
From the sphere, a hand containing three digits emerged, confirming the source of the lightning bolt.
“Enough.”
The sphere of data soon dissipated, and in it, emerged a taller, purple and white Digimon on two legs, about three feet high with a spiky head, similar to Gummy’s. But unlike Gummy, he had fur with a white tuft of fur on his chest. His fringe became longer and more pronounced, now in the shape of a lightning bolt. His forehead and arms had black marks, resembling vital signs that’s found on a heart monitor. His feet especially resembled sports shoes. His eyes opened, displaying an alarmingly bright green color, electricity surging around it, as if he was a living, breathing being of pure energy.
Vergil eyes widened, his mouth agape as he was completely lost for words. The D-Watch began to blare to light, trying to catch the young man’s attention but to no avail.
The Digimon took a step forward towards the shocked ori, electricity discharging all around him as if he could barely contain it.
“Goblimon…get ready for a world of hurt, zappu!” he declared.

‘What the hell is going on?’ Vergil thought to himself, still taken aback by the now former Bibimon’s evolution. ‘First I found out this little guy was in the D-Watch, hiding from this discount Shrek-looking motherfucker that was kicking the living shit out of me, and now… he evolved. And to top it off, he looks a lot like Gummy...'
The sound of his D-Watch finally caught his attention. Vergil raised his arm and pressed a button, the digimon coming up on hologram. Now identified as Pulsemon, a Child level Digimon. This Digimon is known to be a cunning fighter who utilizes his natural agility in combat. Their attacks are lightning based, and they’re particularly influenced by human’s heart rate data.
Vergil sat up and adjusted his glasses, gazing at the surging Digimon. ‘Just who are you?’
A moment passed where the two Digimon continued to stare at each other in a standoff. Goblimon began to sweat bullets, highly strung at the Puslemon’s glare. An opponent like this would have filled him with exhilaration, but instead filled him with dread.
The Pulsemon took a step forward, causing Goblimon to step back in reaction, igniting yet another Goburi Bomb in his hand.
“UOOOOOOHHH!!” He launched the fireball towards Pulsemon, seemingly landing on impact, combusting into a raging inferno. He looked on, certain that his attack set that little pipsqueak ablaze. Detecting his data signature, he looked up in shock as the purple Digimon was in the air, unfazed by the attack as his fringe began to charge with electricity.
“Petit Impulse!” Pulsemon bellowed, discharging a bolt of lighting at Goblimon.
The ori Digimon closed his eyes and crossed his arms defensively, trying his best to shield himself from the attack. A moment passess and he opens his eyes, the attack apparently missing him.
Before he could make his next move, the Pulsemon landed right behind him, making the orge shake in fear. He looked down at his body, checking to see if he had sustained any damage, only finding that he was a-ok.
“Hah! You’ve missed, idiot!” Goblimon barked, now confident that this Pulsemon was all bark and no bite.
The Pulsemon did not respond to him initially, and rather than turning around, continued to walk towards Vergil. He extended a paw towards the injured human, smiling. Vergil, who was at first skeptical at the Digimon’s sudden appearance, was now certain at who he really was. He took his paw, and Pulsemon quickly helped him up.
“I wouldn’t say I missed, zappu,” Pulsemon said, his voice taking on a more relaxed tone. “Besides, you should take a look at your new hairdo in the mirror.”
Goblimon was confused at his statement. When he started feeling his hair, it was completely straight and standing on its end. Now he realized what he was talking about: instead of aiming at him, he instead filled his hair with static electricity, effectively giving him a bad hairdo!
“Feeling electrified, zappu?” Pulsemon asked, his back still turned at his foe. “Hope with that new hairdo of yours, now you can—”
Hearing heavy footsteps, the Puslemon can hear the ori Digimon charging at them, now, preparing to swing at them with his club.
“Can’t take a hint, huh?”
In a green flash, Pulsemon was now suddenly in front of Ogermon, sweeping him with an aerial kick. Vergil blinked in surprise Even though he was a child level digimon, he was fast, really fast. He practically didn’t notice him leaving his side.
The Pulsemon then got into a runner’s stance, a green, vibrant electric aura surrounding him. “Zip-Zap Rush!” he shouted, ramming as hard as he could into Goblimon, so hard in fact that it completely knocked the wind out of the ori Digimon. But it didn’t stop there. Since his foe was positively charged, the electric aura that surrounded Pulsemon began to discharge into his opponent, causing him to erupt into an vibrate electrical explosion.
“GAAAAAAAHHH!!” Goblimon released a final cry as the attack consumed him. He fell to the charred floor, unconscious. The fight was finally over. Relieved that the danger had passed, Vergil panted heavily, suddenly feeling light-headed as he felt himself beginning to faint. Before he could hit the floor, he felt a hand holding his shoulder tightly, keeping him up.
“Are you ok, Uncle Specs?” Pulsemon asked, his eyes filled with concern.
“Yeah…I’m fine.” Vergil replied, resting his hand on his forehead. “It’s just…this is the second time I've been face-to-face with death. It’s gonna take a while for my mind to get used to this feeling. But thanks for saving me."
The furred Pulsemon’s cheeks became tinged in red. He turned to the side and began to fidget with his fringe, smiling “Aww, don’t say that, zappu. I’m the one who should be thanking you for saving me when I was about to be hit by Goblimon’s attack, and for helping me evolve. I didn’t know there were humans as brave as you. Seeing you facing such a strong foe, despite the odds being against you, I couldn’t just stand by and let you get hurt, zappu.”
Vergil smiled and scratched the back of his head, feeling flushed. He’s like a completely different person altogether from seconds ago. “It was nothing. It is my job, after all. I’m Vergil…Vergil Hoskins. Even though you somehow seemed to know who I am, it’s nice to meet you—uhh…”
“Amper!” His fringe stood up, indicating his happiness. “And my dads Gummy the Gumdramon and Prince Bezil of Y’s told me lots about you!”
The hallway was filled with silence. This was a sudden revelation, but something that didn’t surprise Vergil in the slightest. During those months since he last saw his partners, one of them went up and had a kid of their own. Vergil had a feeling from the moment he called him Specs, a nickname that Gummy usually refers to him as, but became confirmed the moment he evolved. So rather than react with surprise, he simply laughed, so hard that tears appeared in his eyes
“Huh, what’s so funny, zappu?!” Amper asked defensively.
“Nothing, nothing, it’s just…damn…” Vergil wiped his eyes. “Looks like I’ve missed a whole lot with my crazy brothers.”
Seeing that his uncle was aiming to insult his parents, but referring to his dad and uncle Vee, Amper smiled, embracing the human in a hug, to which the human happily returned. “Zappu~!”
After a moment, Vergil turned around to see the unconscious Goblimon. His eyes widened in shock. The Digimon was nowhere to be found. He took a real nasty shock pulse attack, so there’s no way he should be able to get up from that. The furred Pulsemon didn’t seem to notice, still hugging the young man tightly. Vergil sighed, leaving it be.
The faint sounds of sirens began to become audible from the distance. Did someone call the police? He looked around the security cameras in the hallway they were in; they appeared to jutter and emit a static sound, indicating that they were disabled by all that electricity Amper emitted. With that kind of violent discharge, it must have fried the security system, alerting the authorities.
“Ok, I have a hundred questions for you, Amper, but for now, we better get out of here. We’re still in hot water.” Vergil explained.
Amper nodded his head. “Uh-huh! It’s so cold and dry in here.”
With that, Vergil quickly raced to his homeroom to grab all of his belongings. Putting his coat and hat on, Vergil opened one of the classroom windows, beckoning Amper to jump out since they were on the second floor. Once they were outside, they sprinted off into the nearby alleyway, avoiding any open roads.
Where to? Somewhere where they could crash for the night—somewhere nearby and Vergil knew exactly where to go.
